Fans of Fox’s The Masked Singer have already cast their theories about who are behind the costumes in both groups A and B. The Sun, for example, has piqued the interest of the most curious viewers: Some think this singer could be Carrie Underwood, others think Demi Lovato. Panelist Jenny McCarthy thinks Mandy Moore, who voiced the character in Tangled, is the singer to whom the clues lead.
The Seahorse is the other likely diva on the show. That singer, who is in Group B, will perform again tonight, and gave a show-stopping performance on September 30. During the clues package, the Seahorse said, “I get the chance to stop playing tug-of-war with myself and finally expose the dauntless diva within.” The clue package also included a rainbow frog.
The character busted out Rihanna’s “Only Girl in the World” in a bright costume with matching boots and cacti backup dancers. Seahorse hit some serious notes and made everyone on the panel wonder if they had a real chart-topper on their hands. “We got a pop princess in the building,” host Nick Cannon said as the song came to a close. Nicole Scherzinger predicted that Seahorse could win the whole season.
“The Sun is very strong; she’s a good competitor against her, but I have a feeling…,” McCarthy said.
“It’s so fun to just have this alter-ego, honestly,” the contestant said. “Something about putting a mask on, you just get to let it shine.”
The panelists were stumped. McCarthy said she thought this person could be “one of the biggest artists ever.” So, who is behind the Seahorse costume? Here are some of the theories.
Tori Kelly
The most popular fan theory for the Seahorse is Tori Kelly, who was a semi-finalist on American Idol in 2010. She also has a Christmas album coming out on October 30, so it would make sense that she would go on this show for a little promotion right now. She also covered “Only Girl in the World” when she was a teen, so her choice of song could be a little shout-out to that. She also performed “Rainbow Connection” with Kermit the Frog in 2016, so there’s your rainbow frog.
Halle Bailey
Another fan theory is that Halle Bailey, one-half of Chloe x Halle, is the Seahorse. She is set to star in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid as Ariel, the lead. There is a clue in the package: “living in the ocean can be dangerous.” Is this a reference to queen of the undersea teenage angst, Ariel?
Halsey
McCarthy thought the rainbow frog might point to the artist being a big icon in the LGBTQ+ community. She also noticed the clue “fire burning inside” and thought there was a connection with Halsey’s song, “Angel Burning Inside.”
Bebe Rexha
Scherzinger’s guess was Hailee Steinfeld, but with the surprise reveal of Mickey Rourke on week two, the Oscar nominee quota for the show was filled. Panelist Robin Thicke went with Bebe Rexha.
Emily Blunt
One of the clues in the Seahorse’s package refers to “a quiet place to hide.” Could this be have anything to do with A Quiet Place? And we know Blunt can sing. She was Mary Poppins in 2018. But her performance on Lip Sync Battle in 2015 was a real showcase of her true performance potential.
