The Kissing Booth 2 will be released in July.

In late May, King (who plays heroine Elle Evans) unveiled the release date of the movie during a YouTube livestream. While doing a puzzle in quarantine (who among us), King revealed that The Kissing Booth 2 will be released on July 24, 2020. That’s more than two years after the original film was released, when it became one of Netflix’s most-watched titles of the summer. A sequel was confirmed back in February 2019.

The original cast and creative team is returning.

Like other Netflix rom-com franchises, including To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and A Christmas Prince, the original cast is returning. King will reprise her role as Elle, a late bloomer stuck in a love triangle, in addition to executive producing the sequel. Joel Courtney will return as her best friend Lee and Jacob Elordi as her textbook bad-boy boyfriend Noah. Molly Ringwald and Meganne Young will also co-star in the film. Plus, Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Taylor Zakhar Perez will join the sequel in new roles.

Vince Marcello is returning as director, writer, and producer on the movie. Jay Arnold will co-write the script with Michele Weisler, Ed Glauser, and Andrew Cole-Bulgin as producers. Adam Friedlander serves as executive producer.

The movie will follow the long-distance relationship plot of the book series.

The Kissing Booth is based on the book series of the same name by Beth Reekles, which she originally self-published on Wattpad. Going the Distance explores the ways Elle and Noah’s newly-labeled relationship is tested when he heads off to college.

An official synopsis of the film suggests Elle’s best friend Lee could be a shoulder to lean on while Noah is away:

Elle Evans (King) just had the most romantic summer of her life with her reformed bad-boy boyfriend Noah Flynn (Elordi). But now Noah is off to Harvard, and Elle heads back to high school for her senior year. She’ll have to juggle a long-distance relationship, getting into her dream college with her best friend Lee (Courtney), and the complications brought on by a close friendship with a handsome, charismatic new classmate named Marco (Perez). When Noah grows close to a seemingly-perfect college girl (Richardson-Sellers), Elle will have to decide how much she trusts him and to whom her heart truly belongs.

Joey King and Jacob Elordi reunited for the sequel after splitting in real-life.

Another reason fans have been curious about a sequel to The Kissing Booth—an inevitable reunion between real-life exes King and Elordi. Some fans speculated about whether or not the Euphoria actor (now linked to his co-star Zendaya) would return after his March 2019 breakup with King.

Alas, the former couple put their past behind them when working on The Kissing Booth 2. King spoke about keeping it professional with her ex on the podcast Mood With Lauren Elizabeth. “I’m a fan with how [the film] resonated with the world, it resonated with me. So going back and doing that and making the sacrifice of what, obviously, everyone is thinking about—outwardly addressing, but what I’m kind of on the sly addressing, making those sacrifices was totally worth it,” she explained.

King also opened up about working with her other leading man, Joel Courtney. “Going back and shooting with one of my real best friends in life, which is Joel Courtney, who plays Lee in the movie was phenomenal. He’s just like one of my favorite co-stars I’ve ever had, because he’s such a great actor.”
