If you left Hulu’s Normal People with questions about the fate of lovelorn Marianne and Connell, a glimpse into their distant future is coming. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal, who played the angsty Irish lovers in the original series, will reprise their roles in a pair of comedic shorts as part of Ireland’s RTÉ Does Comic Relief, The Independent reports. One of the new installments will place the couple 40 years into the future, and both are set to premiere on Friday, June 26.
Series director Lenny Abrahamson will helm the two new shorts, which will reveal what happened to the couple’s relationship beyond its ambiguous college ending. “I promise you, these are two very special bits,” Comic Relief co-founder Richard Curtis, director of Four Weddings and a Funeral and Love, Actually, told the outlet. “It’s so much better than anything we’ve ever made. I mean, I can’t even say all about it, because there’s a guest star in it. But it’s really, really beautiful.”
But the number of people who can actually see how Marianne and Connell’s future plays out is limited. As of right now, only viewers in Ireland and Northern Ireland will have access to the installments on June 26, and no release date for the U.S. has been announced.
And there’s more good news for the Sally Rooney collective. The author’s first novel, Conversations with Friends, is being adapted into a TV series with the same creative team as Normal People. That show, which will follow a complicated love affair amongst a set of Irish creatives, will air on the BBC and Hulu.
