If you’re still reeling from the impressive dance moves in Hustlers, Netflix‘s new documentary Strip Down, Rise Up is here to share a whole new perspective on the world of pole dancing. During the trailer, which dropped on Jan. 15, women from all walks of life join a six-month dance class, intent on exploring their sexuality and getting in touch with their sensuality. Beyond the physical aspect of learning to dance, the women unexpectedly come together to confront body shame, lifelong fears, loss, trauma, and heartbreak. “It’s a journey of growth and self-discovery,” one student said before another added, “You feel a side of yourself that you’ve never felt.”
In embracing the restorative healing abilities of dance and movement, each woman is able to address her mental and emotional needs in a way she hasn’t before. “Some people come in just to learn how to pole dance, and their minds are blown open that it touches a part of themselves that they didn’t know they had,” an instructor said in a voiceover. “I want women to explore this part of themselves so that they can rediscover, reclaim, and shine.” Watch the full trailer here and check out the full documentary once it premieres on Feb. 5.
