Steve Carell is the star of a new workplace comedy, only this time he’s not Michael Scott, the misogynistic, ignorant leader of Dunder Mifflin’s Pennsylvania branch. Now, the Office alum goes by General Mark R. Naird for Netflix’s new comedy series Space Force.
The series, created by Carell and Parks and Rec co-creator Greg Daniels, follows Naird as he helms the newest branch of the U.S. Armed Forces: Space Force, inspired by the real-life initiative POTUS Donald Trump announced back in 2018. “It was always my dream to start something from the ground up,” Naird says in the trailer. “But space is hard.”
With Dr. Adrian Mallory (John Malkovich), the no-nonsense genius (or, as Naird puts it, “Bill the Science Guy”) and Ben Schwartz as Space Force’s media manager F. Tony Scarapiducci by his side, General Mark R. Naird begins to assemble his crew from the ground up. And Scarapiducci has just one requirement: “No uggos.”
The trailer is just as chaotic as you’d expect a Carell-led show to be, from a space suit test-run that finds Naird crawling through the desert with a skyrocketing heart rate, to a monkey and dog floating a green toy back and forth in space. Expect The Office–level comedy from the all-star cast, which includes the likes of Lisa Kudrow, Don Lake, Chris Gethard, Jane Lynch, and the late Fred Willard.
Season 1 of Space Force premieres May 29 on Netflix.
