Ask any fashion-obsessed human about their first Kate Spade bag, and they’ll have stories to tell. For dancer Maddie Ziegler, it brings up memories of playing dress-up in her mother’s closet. “[My mom] had a Kate Spade little clutch purse,” she recalls. “I just remember always going into her closet and just wanting to try on her makeup, try on her things, her perfumes, and I always loved that bag so much.”
Known for its bright colors and whimsical designs, Kate Spade New York evokes nostalgia for a legion of fans who have worn its bags since childhood. It only makes sense that Ziegler is the face of the brand’s newest scent Kate Spade New York since Maddie is a cause for nostalgia herself.
Now 18-years-old, Ziegler is decked out in a festive Kate Spade outfit when we meet on Zoom, but I instantly recall the little girl who shocked the world in Sia’s Chandelier music video and stole the show in Dance Moms. ” I got to go to a Kate Spade event a couple of years ago, and they dressed me in a beautiful floral suit,” Ziegler adds. “I was already fangirling that I was able to go to their event, and they dressed me. Now I’m the face of their campaign.”
Ahead, Ziegler talks about Kate Spade, filming her new movie Music alongside Sia and Kate Hudson, and her favorite beauty trick for long-lasting lipstick.
If you could describe the fragrance Kate Spade New York in one word, what would it be?
Feminine. The scent is the perfect amount of floral and fruity, but still has the cool modern looking bottle, which I love. There are so many good elements that go into it, and when I put on a fragrance, I feel super confident.
It’s the holidays, so I have to ask, what are some of your favorite scents of the season?
I love a woodsy scent. I love that so much! Just a real Christmas tree is the best scent for Christmas. Nothing is more Christmas than that. I love cinnamon. No offense to my mom, I love her, but she’s terrible at cooking. But she is an incredible baker. And every year, we always make apple pie, pumpkin pies, apple crumbles, all of the above. That’s a very nostalgic smell for me, baking for the holidays.

You’re an incredible dancer. Do you have any beauty tips or tricks you’ve picked up over the years of performances and competitions that you still use today?
Longevity is the most important thing when performing on stage and making sure that with sweat and different costume changes, that your makeup and hair don’t move and it stays in place. My stage routine is very different from my everyday routine. In terms of lipstick, if you apply lipstick and then use a brush, dip it into the loose powder, and then apply that over your lips, it’ll stay all day. And I’ve done that for events and things, and it works like a charm.

We’re going to see you act very soon in your new film Music. How was that experience?
It was incredible. I have always dreamt of doing movies and now that it’s become a reality. Just getting to work with some of the people that I did, I was only in awe. Sia, Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr.—all of them I look up to so much. I filmed [the movie] when I was 14 and now being 18 looking back I’m like, I cannot believe I did that.
Are you a big Kate Hudson fan?
Yes. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days like, how could you go wrong with it? All of her movies are incredible, but that one sticks out to me, just like her wearing that yellow dress. I genuinely love her, and since playing sisters with her and now having a collaboration for her active brand, I feel like me and she clicked so well. She’s taught me so much and she’s just such a nice human. It’s very rare to see, I feel like, these days within the industry.

You also had to sing in the film. What was that like?
Absolutely terrifying. I know some people sometimes say, I’m a singer, but they don’t sing. I will never claim that because I genuinely know I’m not good at singing. Kate and Leslie sing their parts in the movie, and then my parts, I thought, Sia was going to sing, and then she was like, “How would you feel about singing your songs in the movie?” And I was like, “I don’t know. I feel super insecure.” And she was like, “Okay, we totally don’t have to do it.” And then the next day I came back into her house and she was like, “I think you can do it.” And I was like, “Okay, I’ll do it for you.”

And you have Sia, who’s an incredible vocalist, to help you.
Yeah. But in a way, that’s why I was more scared. I wouldn’t let her come to any of the sessions with me. I remember she was recording something right before me, and as soon as I walked in, she was like, “I’m leaving. I’m sorry.” Because I was like, “You cannot be here,” because I’m just too intimidated. But I remember when she got my first demo back, she sent me a video of her crying, and she was like, “It’s so beautiful.”
