After a seemingly endless wait (434 days, to be exact) Dickinson is finally returning to our screens, with the first three episodes of season 2 dropping on Apple TV+ on Friday, Jan. 8. As the inventive series continues to reimagine the life and work of Emily Dickinson (played by Hailee Steinfeld), the newest installment will see the great American poet wrestle with writer’s block, potential fame, and her evolving relationship with her sister-in-law/lover Sue (Ella Hunt). As for her little sister, the delightfully flighty Lavinia (Anna Baryshnikov), her problems are a bit closer to home.

Lavinia spent season 1 longing to conform to the era’s expectations of affluent womanhood, but now, she’s ready to follow in her older sister’s boundary-pushing footsteps. That’s complicated by the arrival of Henry “Ship” Shipley (Pico Alexander), a former flame boarding at the Dickinson house. Naturally, he’s approaching the arrangement with ulterior motives: making a wife out of “pure, simple, quiet, traditional” Lavinia. She’s not having it. ELLE.com has an exclusive clip of Lavinia and Ship from the season 2 premiere, “Fame is a fickle food,” which you can watch above.

Of the new season, Steinfeld told ELLE.com last year, “Emily finding her place, her confidence as a writer, as a woman—it’s all taken to the next level. Of course, it wouldn’t be Dickinson if it wasn’t wild and messy and heartbreaking and funny. It’s got it all times 10.”
