Small, eco-friendly changes to our daily routines can add up to a huge impact on our planet if enough people do it. Tweaking your daily rituals by making mindful choices about which products to use is an easy place to begin, and starting with these small steps can give you the needed motivation to adopt even more green practices. We partnered with Burt’s Bees Oral Care and challenged lifestyle content creator Rachel Nguyen to take a good look at her morning routine. Check out the video to see what switches she made and read on for more details.
Use More Eco-Friendly Oral Care Products
Nyugen admitted her oral care routine was due for an eco-friendly update, so she tried Burt’s Bees Charcoal and Whitening Toothpaste and Bamboo Toothbrush. Burt’s Bees aims to source the materials and ingredients for its products using methods that avoid harming the planet. The brand’s Charcoal and Whitening toothpaste uses charcoal created from upcycled coconut shells and sustainably-sourced bamboo. (Bonus: the tube is made from HDPE, a curbside recyclable plastic, to ensure that it can be easily recycled once it is empty.)
After brushing, Nguyen said her mouth felt clean and that she liked the taste. She also appreciated how the toothpaste is free of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a foaming agent that cosmetic chemist Ginger King says can irritate your gums, and parabens, preservatives that have a earned bad rep in the beauty industry after being found to be hormone disrupting.
Take Shorter Showers
Nguyen said she started limiting her shampoo sessions to three days per week, making her showers for the other four days notably shorter. Shorter showers use less water and reduce the energy demand of her water heater.
Swap In Reusable Products
Nguyen decided to try sustainable swaps for beauty swabs and facial rounds. While the traditional versions of these products are typically single-use, Nguyen’s can be washed—ultimately minimizing her waste. The reusable swabs can be used up to 1,000 times (yes, you read that right), while her facial rounds have serged edges and were made to be especially durable.
Try a DIY Hair-Removal Wax
Finally, Nguyen shared her homemade hair-removal wax. The DIY recipe uses three household ingredients: sugar, water, and lemon. This mixture is much more eco-friendly than a disposable razor that may sit in a landfill for years if not disposed of correctly. Try a similar wax to Nguyen’s yourself using this recipe.
