An Exclusive First Look Inside La Mer’s Lightest Moisturizer Yet

Beauty

When a person tells me they use La Mer, I very rarely follow up with a “which product do you like?” That’s because Crème de la Mer is the stuff of beauty routine legends—smoothing on the thick and deeply moisturizing cream is like a rite of passage, passed down generation to generation from mother to daughter (with skincare-obsessed sons getting involved these days now, too).

Starting today, a new La Mer moisturizer is vying for space in your beauty routine. And if you’re part of the last generation of skincare users (aka those who are more prone to skin troubles like acne)— this one is perfect for you.

The Hydrating Emulsion feels completely weightless on the skin, which is pretty miraculous given the fact that it starts with the same two skin secrets as the brand’s super-thick creams: the Miracle Broth and Lime Tea Concentrate.

La Mer’s Miracle Broth makes its debut on the skincare market in 1965 when founder Max Huber released the line’s first product (yes, that was Crème de la Mer). It involves fermenting ingredients like sea kelp, minerals, wheat germ, citrus oil, and alfalfa into an inflammation-calming stock. Lime Tea Concentrate, too, was part of the first formula for Crème de la Mer—lime rinds are distilled in an alcohol solution, infusing the juice with the fruit’s natural power to fight off free radicals.

From there, the formula is further supercharged with kelp-infused soy milk (more kelp!!) that’s filled with vitamins A, C, D, and E, and minerals and can only be made when placed in a rapid cyclone-like vortex and flash heat processed.

The new texture is meant to be layered so you can choose your hydration adventure. Disperse it into your palms right after your serum of choice and spread it across the skin to lock the actives. If you feel like your skin is craving more hydration, next, you’ll apply a moisturizer. Or if your skin is like mine in the summer (aka, needing something light), you won’t.

Next time I’m talking La Mer with friends, I’ll tell them about the Hydrating Emulsion. After all, knowledge is power.

(P.S. If you’re reading the beauty section of ELLE and also love conspiracies theories, then La Mer’s brand story is the perfect intersection of your interests.)
