Now that we’ve reached the 7-week mark of quarantine, a healthy dose of my life is dedicated to the documentaries section of Netflix. On May 6, an exciting new entry is hitting the queue to brighten your shelter at home routine. Netflix announced that a documentary about Michelle Obama’s Becoming book tour is coming.
Titled Becoming, the documentary will take viewers on the 34-city jaunt that followed the blockbuster release of Becoming: A Guided Journal For Discovering Your Voice in November 2018. The wide-ranging memoir, which covered Obama’s time as the First Lady and the early days of her romance with Barack, became the best-selling book that year.
Becoming is the latest film to come from the Obamas’ producing deal with Netflix. Their first film with the streaming service, American Factory, won the Best Documentary Feature Oscar earlier this year. Deadline reports that Nadia Hallgren directed the film. She was also the cinematographer on CNN’s We Will Rise: Michelle Obama’s Mission to Educate Girls Around the World in 2016. Obama released the following statement regarding the documentary, per Deadline:
“Those months I spent traveling — meeting and connecting with people in cities across the globe — drove home the idea that what we share in common is deep and real and can’t be messed with. In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries, and dreams. We processed the past and imagined a better future. In talking about the idea of ‘becoming,’ many of us dared to say our hopes out loud. I treasure the memories and that sense of connection now more than ever, as we struggle together to weather this pandemic, as we care for our loved ones, tend to our communities, and try to keep up with work and school while coping with huge amounts of loss, confusion, and uncertainty.”
You can stream Becoming on Netflix, May 6.
