It’s true, Netflix’s smash-hit K-drama Squid Game is a show largely about brutality, poverty, desperation, and the inevitability of death. It is also a show in which the main characters sport some truly iconic green tracksuits. These two truths, however separate, can and must co-exist.
You might be asking the question, Is it appropriate to wear the garb of these poor souls, who fight and kill one another in order to outlast a deadly children’s game? Your heart is in the right place, I assure you, but nevertheless we must face this question with an emphatic “yes.” We must wear these tracksuits as Halloween costumes—or even on casual errands—simply because they are too good not to wear. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk did not marry such gorgeous colors for us to simply ignore their potential beyond the screen. And besides, since when have moral quandaries ever stopped you from dressing like, say, Katniss Everdeen or Darth Vader? It’s fiction, baby!
With that bit in mind, let’s explore a few ways to recreate Squid Game‘s best costumes—with some ELLE-inspired fashion flair, of course.
The Players
First, of course, we must address these tracksuits. H&M makes a perfect dark green dupe you can wear well into winter, though we’d recommend removing any numbers you iron on to designate your spot in the Squid Game ranks. (You might turn a few heads at the grocery store if you aren’t careful.) Finish off the look with a clean white sneaker—this Vans pick is one of our favorites for both dress-up and everyday use, if you want something that will last past the holiday.
The Guards
You could have everyone in your group wear those magnificent green suits, but for some added color, might we suggest having one or two friends don the Squid Game guard uniform? All you need is a bold pink jumpsuit and one of those masks that looks like it belongs on a Playstation controller. With the options below, you can buy an all-in-one costume or DIY it with some sturdier pieces.
The Front Man
Don’t tell me this look isn’t high fashion. Just because the person behind that mask is likely a sociopath doesn’t mean he’s not a magician with metallic! That cold, geometric face paired with the glimmer of silver is chilling and chic. You could splurge on a trench coat, or shoot for the stars with this fabulous jacket-and-pant combo from Missguided.
The Doll
Arguably, no group costume would be complete without someone dressed as the terrifying robot-doll from the red light, green light game. Thankfully, she has decent fashion sense, which means shopping for her look is seamless. You’ll need a simple orange mini dress layered over a scalloped-collar yellow shirt, paired with Mary Janes and thigh-high socks. It’ll feel very schoolgirl-meets-serial killer, which we suppose is the point.
