When you think of New York fashion, many things may come to mind. Between its fleeting runway trends, uptown vs. downtown sartorial dichotomy, and stale Sex and the City references, the moral of the story is always that the city is a character itself. It’s the reason why being a “real” New Yorker is the highest compliment you can give, and nothing in the industry is more authentic than both Marc Jacobs and Bergdorf Goodman.
Jacobs has a personal and intimate relationship with the iconic shopping destination. “Believe it or not, I was young once and I loved going shopping with my grandmother and I remember Bergdorf so well,” he told ELLE. “The service—and what you find at Bergdorf—is so unique and above and beyond anything else.” But the two New Yorkers officially came together last June when the designer presented his fall-winter 2021 runway on the iconic facade of Bergdorf Goodman. Critically praised, the collection was an opulent showcase robust in character and design. We witnessed obtuse logo signaling, holographic eveningwear, and oversized puffer jackets we assume will be spotted on Rihanna soon (who previously partnered with BG in 2020).

In many ways, Jacobs designed the collection with Bergdorf and its no-holds-barred method in luxury merchandising in mind. “We wanted to do the collection on a level that was very special and luxe, a level that allowed me to continue to make the fabric choices I make and do the workmanship I prefer,” he told ELLE. “My feeling was if we did something on a small level, and it was only available in one place, it became a jewel and rare. I don’t want to use the word ‘couture,’ but things were really being made for the customer and that customer is Bergdorf Goodman.”
This week marks Bergdorf Goodman as the exclusive retailer for Runway Marc Jacobs, a true New York fairytale that comes full circle for Jacobs. “It’s a very special institution and it’s always been the ultimate place to be for fashion—to have your clothes at Bergdorf has always been the goal.”
