What to look for in best men’s running shorts

Material

Overall, we suggest you go for something lightweight, moisture-wicking, and soft to the touch. Next up, decide if you want more special features like stretch, insulation, and breathability. If you want something stretchy, look for things like spandex and elastane. For the most breathable options, go for nylon or polyester-based materials.

Fit

The fit for the best running shorts can be broken down into two main categories; compression or regular fit shorts. If you have issues with muscle aches, check out compression shorts to increase oxygen and blood flow, which helps the muscles to warm up more quickly. Most men who aren’t fans of tightness stick to regular fit shorts for breathable air circulation and different length options.

Pockets

If you need to run with the essentials like your phone and keys, look for pockets that preferably have zippers, so your things don’t fall out. Many products feature handy separate phone pockets on the liners nowadays.

FAQ

    • Running liners provide support and sweat-wicking properties to keep things cool, comfortable, and dry while you’re running. Liners are usually made with extremely soft fabrics to prevent chafing and allow you to skip the underwear if you prefer.

      • If the shorts come with layered compression tights or soft liners underneath, guys usually don’t wear anything under running shorts. However, if you prefer to have a bit more support, we suggest wearing snug underwear or longer tights/ leggings if you are running in colder weather.

        • The easiest way to fold running shorts is to fold them in half twice. Start by laying it flat right side up and fold them vertically. Then, fold it again horizontally so that the waistband and the bottom hem of the leg openings line up.

          • With the exception of compression shorts, the best men’s running shorts should fit not too tight but not too loose either. If they are too tight, you might find them to be uncomfortable while running and if they are too loose, you may end up pantsing yourself. A pro tip is to find shorts with a drawcord string on the waistband so you can adjust the fit accordingly.

Abortion Funds to Support in Each of the States Most Likely to Restrict Abortion

People protest in response to the Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization Supreme Court ruling abortion funds

Laws have never been the only thing that make it harder to access abortion in the US. Cost, proximity, child care, transportation, loss of wages, deliberately inaccurate information from crisis pregnancy centers, social stigma, and myriad other factors have limited reproductive freedom for decades, especially for marginalized communities fighting compounding issues of racism, classism, agism, homophobia, transphobia, and immigration status. That being said, the reversal of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that codified the constitutional right to certain types of abortion will drastically and immediately limit access to abortion care for millions of Americans.

For nearly 30 years, abortion funds have been supporting communities throughout the US by offsetting the medical and practical costs of abortion, helping to locate and fund legitimate clinics, and educating people about their options with compassion and care. With abortion likely to be inaccessible in more than 20 states in the near future, the imperative work to center and support people seeking access to abortion care must become a priority for all reproductive freedom and justice advocates.

Below, you’ll find information on abortion funds in each of the 22 states the Guttmacher Institute deemed “certain” to restrict or ban abortion outright when Roe was reversed, 13 of which have so-called “trigger laws” already in place. There is no question: donating to one or more of these funds will change and save lives.

A quick note before you select your fund: if you think this cause is important today, it will be even more important in July, October, and February. “Rage giving” is helpful, but it isn’t enough to fund a movement. Consider becoming a monthly donor to help abortion funds forecast their resources and better serve their communities. Remember, too, that many abortion funds are volunteer run and operate on a skeleton staff. As new restrictions go into effect in each state, these funds will have to adapt to new environments and may not have the administrative capacity you might expect from other nonprofits you support. Give them grace.

Alabama

In Alabama, a 2019 law could go into effect banning nearly all abortions, with exceptions only for medical emergencies. Under the statute, anyone who performs the procedure could be imprisoned for up to 99 years. You can support Alabamans in need of abortion care by giving to the Yellowhammer Fund.

Arizona

While there is a near-total ban on abortion still on the books in Arizona, the state is more likely to enforce a 15-week ban passed earlier this year, which provides exceptions only for the life of the patient. You can support Arizonians in need of abortion care by giving to the Abortion Fund of Arizona.

Arkansas

In 2019, Arkansas legislators passed a law banning abortion in nearly all circumstances — with no exceptions for rape or incest — which will take effect after the court’s decision is certified. Under the law, performing an illegal abortion carries a fine of up to $100,000 and a sentence of up to 10 years imprisonment. You can support Arkansans in need of abortion care by giving to the Arkansas Abortion Support Network.

Georgia

In Georgia, a 2019 law criminalizing most abortions after fetal cardiac activity is detected could take effect, banning abortion before most people even know that they’re pregnant. You can support Georgians in need of abortion care by giving to the ARC-Southeast.

Idaho

In Idaho, a 2020 law will go into effect 30 days after the reversal of Roe v. Wade that will make it illegal to perform or attempt to perform an abortion, with limited exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the patient. You can support Idahoans in need of abortion care by giving to the Northwest Abortion Access Fund (NWAAF).

Iowa

Earlier this month, the Iowa Supreme Court overturned a 2018 decision stating that Iowans had a right to abortion under the state constitution, paving the way for more restrictive laws from the state’s Republican-led legislature. You can support Iowans in need of abortion care with a gift to the Iowa Abortion Access Fund.

Kentucky

In Kentucky, a 2019 law goes into effect classifying abortion care as a felony, with exceptions only for the life of the patient. You can support Kentuckians in need of abortion care by giving to the Kentucky Health Justice Network.

Louisiana

In Louisiana, a 2006 law goes into effect making performing almost any abortion punishable by up to 10 years in prison, with fines ranging between $10,000 and $100,000. You can support Louisianans in need of abortion care through the The Goldstein Fund (North Louisiana) or the New Orleans Abortion Fund (NOLA and Gulf South).

Michigan

In Michigan, a 1931 near-total ban on abortion remains on the books. While the law is currently unenforced, future elections could pave the way for additional restrictions to sit alongside the waiting periods, prohibitions on insurance coverage, parental-consent requirements, and other limitations currently in place in the state. You can support Michiganders in need of abortion care with a gift to the Midwest Access Coalition.

Mississippi

In Mississippi, a 2007 law will take effect after the court’s decision has been certified. It makes performing an abortion a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, with limited exceptions for rape and the life of the patient. This is in addition to the six-week ban on abortion that served as the catalyst for the Supreme Court’s decision. You can support Mississippians in need of abortion care through the Mississippi Reproductive Freedom Fund.

Missouri

Missouri’s 2019 trigger law serves as a near-total ban on abortion and makes performing the procedure a Class B felony that could result in a doctor losing their medical license. It will take effect as soon as the court’s decision is certified by the state’s attorney general. You can support Missourians in need of abortion care through the Missouri Abortion Fund.

North Dakota

In North Dakota, a 2007 law will take effect within 30 days of the court’s decision being certified. It prohibits all abortions, with exceptions only for rape, incest, or the life of the patient. This is in addition to a ban on the dilation-and-evacuation method and a six-week ban on abortion, which were passed in 2019 and 2013, respectively, and which could also take effect. You can support North Dakotans in need of abortion care through the North Dakota Women In Need Abortion Fund.

Oklahoma

Earlier this year, Oklahoma’s governor signed a bill banning abortion from the moment of fertilization, with limited exceptions for rape, incest, and medical emergencies. While this ban is already in effect, the state also has trigger laws in place. You can support Oklahomans in need of abortion care through the Roe Fund.

South Carolina

In South Carolina, a 2021 law that is not currently in effect but that could be made enforceable post Roe bans most abortions after six weeks. You can support South Carolinians in need of abortion care through the JEN (Justice Empowerment Network).

South Dakota

In South Dakota, a 2005 law goes into effect that makes performing an abortion a Class 6 felony, with exceptions only in cases where the patient’s life is in jeopardy. You can support South Dakotans in need of abortion care through the JEN (Justice Empowerment Network).

Tennessee

In Tennessee, a 2019 law will go into effect 30 days after Roe v. Wade is overturned. The law makes performing an abortion a Class C felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. It makes exceptions only for cases involving the life and health of the patient. You can support Tennesseeans in need of abortion care through the Mountain Access Brigade.

Texas

In Texas, a six-week ban on abortion is already in effect that is enforceable through civil action. The state also has a trigger law in place that will prohibit nearly all abortions starting 30 days after the Supreme Court’s decision. Under the statute, performing an illegal abortion would carry a fine of at least $100,000. You can support Texans in need of abortion care by giving at NeedAbortion.org.

Utah

In Utah, a 2020 law will go into effect after the state’s legislative general counsel has certified the court’s decision. It will make performing an abortion a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison, with exceptions for cases involving rape, incest, severe birth defects, and medical emergencies. You can support Utahns in need of abortion care by giving at the Utah Abortion Fund.

West Virginia

In West Virginia, a 2018 state constitutional amendment explicitly states that there is no right to abortion access in the state, paving the way for future restrictions. You can support West Virginians in need of abortion care with a gift to the Women’s Health Center of West Virginia.

Wisconsin

In Wisconsin, an 1849 near-total ban on abortion — passed 70 years before women had the right to vote — remains on the books. While state leaders have said that they will not enforce it, the future remains uncertain, and elections will be crucial to protecting reproductive rights. Support Wisconsinites in need of abortion care with a gift to the Women’s Medical Fund.

Wyoming

In Wyoming, a law passed earlier this year will go into effect within days of the court’s decision being certified. It criminalizes abortions and establishes a penalty of up to 14 years in prison for those who perform them, with exceptions only for rape, incest, and the life of the patient. You can support Wyomingites in need of abortion care through Chelsea’s Fund.

With LGBTQ+ Rights Under Threat, Madonna Creates a Safe Space

Though I’m only 24 years old, if I’m being honest, there are very few reasons I would leave my apartment after 10 P.M. on a work night. A lover? Probably not. A slice of New York City pizza? Maybe. Secret Madonna performance for Pride Month? C’mon, sign me up!

So when a co-worker slid into my DMs and offered me a ticket in her stead, I was physically unable to turn it down. Right then and there, I slid on my best club-approved black T-shirt, wiggled into some printed pants, grabbed my roommate, and headed to Terminal 5, the perfect venue in Midtown Manhattan for an NYC Pride Week treat.

And boy, did it deliver. Madonna, along with a coterie of drag queens, queer artists, and dancers, gave an expectedly jolting performance at the World of Women NFT event. Entitled “Finally Enough Love” in honor of the star’s 2022 dance remix album, Madge sure knows how to throw gay old night. Belvedere Vodka sponsored, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Bob the Drag Queen emceed, co-star and fellow winner Violet Chachki performed a spicy burlesque dance sequence, and fellow show alum Laganja Estranja made quite a point that she would most likely take the crown on an All Stars season (please come back, I beg of you). The queen of pop was also joined by Tokischa (with whom she later shared a passionate kiss, more on that later…), Saucy Santana, and Pixie Aventura, rounding out an A-list roster dressed for the gods.

Throughout the night, it was easy to be enamored by the environment. A giant disco ball hung over the crowd, Madonna’s face could be found on just about every open wall, and the crowd wore…basically anything they could find to express themselves. As LGBTQ+ rights continue to come under attack across the country and beyond, the environment felt like a refuge, a place to celebrate love and get drunk with your best friends while belting out “Vogue” at the top of your lungs.

Coming out at roughly 12 A.M. after mind-bending performances from the drag queens, Madonna first joined Tokischa and Pixie Aventura on stage to perform a remix of Tokischa’s “Linda” and her own hit “Hung Up.” The beat gyrated as Madonna and Tokischa, well, gyrated. The two then recreated one of the most iconic MTV Video Music Awards moments ever, making out à la Britney Spears and Madonna (and Christina Aguilera) in 2003. “It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it,” Madonna said post-smooch. “I had too much lipstick on.”

Madonna then spoke to the crowd, dropping iconic one-liners faster than she drops hits. Some highlights:

“I’m on time, and you’re late. What’s up with that? Did you have a better party to go to? Then why were you late? Crickets.”

“This was the city where I was born. I came out of my mothers vagina in Bay City, Michigan, but I was born in New York City.”

“In case you didn’t know, one of the reasons New York is so great is that I’m pretty sure the first queer human evolved from this city. I think they came from the caves of Central Park West.”

“If you can make it here, then you probably are so queer.”

“There’s one more reason why New York City is the best city in the world. We have the best pizza. Give it up for the pizza in New York.”

After the crowd poured one out for the pizza in New York (most with a Madonna-themed cocktail in hand), Bob the Drag Queen performed again, and Saucy Santana came out and sang “Material Girl” with Madonna, mashing up Saucy Santana’s song of the same name. The show culminated with a rendition of “Celebration,” featuring the full cast of talent. (TBH, I’m still recovering.)

Following the set, many continued to dance as DJs mixed Madonna songs with miscellaneous thumping beats. Others took commemorative photos, and many happily left the venue with a goodie bag in hand, followed by free pizza and Big Gay Ice Cream right outside the venue’s doors.

Earlier in the night, Bob the Drag Queen said, “When you’re a queer person, you never have to justify your fucking love.” And in that Madonna-filled space, no one had to justify a thing, whether it be a DFMO (dance floor make out) or something more, because there was “Finally Enough Love” to go around.

    Our Top Picks

Of all the many types of oils and brands that bottle them, Moroccanoil Treatment is the best hair oil for men overall. Moroccanoil is used to hyper-charge any hair lacking sheen and calms flyaways and frizz with ease. It also has a mild, pleasant scent.

The key ingredient that makes it work so well is a hair care superhero: Argan oil. It’s not the last time you’ll see Argan oil on this list, and that’s because it is arguably the most versatile oil for hair treatment. It works so well because it’s richer than other oils in linoleic and oleic fatty acids, and it’s packed with Vitamin E.

They claim it increases shine by up to 118%. It’s an oddly specific number, but I guess that makes it seem more believable.

Ingredients: Argan Oil, Linseed Extract | Size: 3.4 fl oz | Hair Type: All hair types

    What we like

    • Argan Oil + LinseedOil = 118% better shine

    What we don’t like

The fear of thinning hair keeps many men up at night. We’re not too proud to say we’ve fallen victim to that time-honored terror. Being bald is fine, but there’s nothing wrong with holding on to your sweet mane as long as you can. If you’re fighting to keep what hair you have healthy (and maybe win some strands back), this is the best hair oil for men (or maybe just you).

Jojoba oil is unique because it absorbs into pores cleaner than others and leaves behind no buildup. This strengthens the pores and promotes growth in spots that struggle otherwise. What makes Kate Blanc’s Jojoba excellent is that it’s 100% pure and unrefined. This Jojoba is the best hair oil for men you’ll find for stimulating hair growth.

Ingredients: 100% Jojoba Oil | Size: 2 fl oz | Hair Type: Thinning & Dry Hair

    • Great for skin & nail health too
    What we don’t like

Verb Ghost Oil might be your best hair oil for men if you have afro-textured hair. Moringa seed oil is known as one of the best for this hair type, and the added benefits of bamboo extract and soy proteins only ramp up the performance.

They call this blend “weightless” because it doesn’t drag your hair down or leave it looking damp. It locks in moisture and doesn’t ease up, so you won’t have to worry about dried-up frizz throughout the day. It’s so light that it feels like there’s nothing. You know, like a ghost.

Ingredients: Moringa Seed Oil, Bamboo Extract, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein | Size: 2 fl oz | Hair Type: Tight Curls/Textured Hair

    What we like

    • “Weightless” design
    • Perfect for afro-textured manes

Since it’s focused on repairing hair, not just fighting dryness and conditioning, it’s perfect for guys who have been severely neglecting their mop.

Best of all, it’s excellent for hair types from straight to curly. It helps a wide range of buyers.

Argan oil is the consensus best hair oil for men these days. It’s not a jack of all trades; it’s a master. Argan takes everything the other oils do, i.e., moisturizing, healing scalp, adding shine, and does it better with less product needed.

What Kate Blanc produces is 100% pure, no-frills Argan oil. 100% Argan isn’t as potent as it can be with some key added ingredients but still performs better than its competitors.

A package like this is excellent for making your own oils. There are plenty of blends to try, and come up with an award-winning Argan oil serum tailored just for you. There are some excellent Argan oil-based hair treatments out there, but this bottle is best if you want the pure stuff.

Ingredients: 100% Argan Oil | Size: 4 fl oz | Hair Type: All Types

Listen, coconut oil isn’t the best hair oil for men on the market. That being said, it still ticks all the hair oil boxes and is probably the best smelling. I mean, who can be in a bad mood when they smell like delicious coconuts? There might be more effective products on the market, but the quality of olfactory life this oil provides can’t be beaten.

Coco & Co.’s oil is as pure as pure can be. They claim their unique extraction method makes it 1000x purer than their competition. That seems like a classic exaggeration, but people love it, so who are we to argue.

Ingredients: Pure Organic Coconut Oil | Size: 2 fl oz | Hair Type: All hair

    What we like

    • Smelling the island vibrations
    • 1000% more pure than other brands
    What we don’t like

    • 1000%? Really?

Castor hair oil is so old that Cleopatra supposedly used it to tame her royal tresses. That hasn’t stopped the ancient cure-all remedy from building more hype than ever in the past few years.

Jamaican Black Castor oil is what kickstarted the hibernating castor oil hype train. Rumors and anecdotal evidence spread that the coffee-colored Jamaican Black worked better than the plain stuff. Jamaican Black Castor is processed differently; the roasting leads to an ash buildup (hence the color) and anti-fungal properties that are said to heal a struggling scalp.

Of the many companies making Jamaican Black, Tropic Isle is our favorite. They’ve had a solid reputation since 1992, they’re affordable, and they have more 5-star reviews on Amazon than Cleopatra has years in the after-life. A lot more.

Ingredients: Jamaican Black Castor Oil | Size: 8 oz | Hair Type: All types

    What we like

    • Heals hair, nails, skin, feet, everything
    • Cleopatra used it
    What we don’t like

    • Hype not scientifically proven

Curl Milk might sound like a workout supplement, but don’t be fooled. Maui Moisture created a key player in the best hair oil for men market, especially for men with curly haircuts. This hair oil is a mixture of coconut oil to hydrate, papaya butter to smooth, and aloe vera to de-frizz.

It’s the Three Musketeers of curly hair, a savior that curly-haired folks can genuinely rely on to detangle, hydrate, and reinforce their luscious locks. Just don’t expect it to be the best for all hair types.

Ingredients: Aloe Vera, Coconut Oil, Papaya Butter, Plumeria Extract | Size: 8 fl oz | Hair Type: Thick, Curly hair

    What we like

    • Specially formulated for curly hair
    • Love the name “curl milk”
    What we don’t like

    • Also kind of hate the name “curl milk”

Everybody and their dog has heard the name Garnier Fructis. Garnier has been one of the biggest names in grooming since 1904, and this product definitely lives up to that fame. This anti-frizz serum boasts 72 hours of frizz control in up to 97% humidity. We don’t know how they got those numbers, but they’re pretty damn impressive if you ask us.

This serum contains the hair oil MVP of this article, Argan oil, and a helping of Kera-System+. We don’t know what Kera-System+ is, but it does sound nice.

If anti-frizz is what you’re looking for, this is the best hair oil for men and potentially could be your new best friend.

Ingredients: Kera-System+, Argan oil | Size: 5.1 fl oz | Hair Type: Frizzy hair

What To Look For In The Best Hair Oil For Men

    Hair type

To know which of the best hair oils for men you need, start with your hair type. You probably know what your hair type is, at least partially. It’s common sense whether you have afro-textured, curly, wavy, or straight. You also need to determine if your hair is naturally dry or greasy.

If your hair becomes a crispy, frizzy mess within hours of showering, it’s pretty dry. If you look like you’re auditioning for Grease after a day at the office, you probably don’t need any help staying hydrated. Always know your hair type before buying.

    Ingredients

Abortion Ruling May Put Same-Sex Marriage Rights In Jeopardy

We’re still processing the implications of the draft-opinion leak indicating that the Supreme Court may overturn Roe v. Wade. If made official, this decision would leave the legal status of abortion up to the discretion of the states, 26 of which are either certain or likely to ban abortion when the Court allows it. And while this draft opinion only directly affects abortion rights, it has the potential to set a concerning precedent for other rights, including marriage equality, IVF, contraception, and more.

Roe v. Wade and Unenumerated Rights

To understand why, it’s helpful to understand that Roe v. Wade depends on the right to privacy. This right is “implied,” or unenumerated — meaning that while it’s not explicitly stated in the Constitution, it is recognized based on the Supreme Court’s interpretation of several amendments that “protect our freedom to make certain decisions about our bodies and our private lives without interference from the government,” according to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

This includes the Fourteenth Amendment and the doctrine of substantive due process, which “interprets the Constitution’s explicit protection of ‘liberty’ to protect certain unenumerated rights,” Cary Franklin, a professor at UCLA School of Law and faculty director of the Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy, who specializes in constitutional law and anti-discrimination law, says. The Supreme Court has primarily relied on this doctrine for its abortion decisions, Franklin says, defining unenumerated rights through history as well as changing social practices and values. “This approach accepts that broadly-worded constitutional protections — such as the constitutional protection for liberty — are susceptible to (in fact, require) new interpretations over time as new generations of Americans come to appreciate more fully the meaning of that term,” Franklin tells POPSUGAR.

Abortion is far from the only Supreme Court case that rests on this interpretation of unenumerated rights. Cases establishing the legality of contraception, interracial marriage, and same-sex marriage are among the Supreme Court’s other rulings based on this same precedent. If the Court reverses the original ruling on Roe, the fear is that these other decisions, which are based on the same legal logic, could be the next to go.

Overturning Roe Could Set a Precedent for Same-Sex Marriage

This concern is understandable when you consider the conservative justices’ history-centric view on unenumerated rights. They believe that “the meaning of the word ‘liberty’ in the Constitution should be understood as frozen in time, that liberty means only what it meant in 1868, when the [Fourteenth] Amendment became part of the Constitution,” Franklin explains. Justice Samuel Alito gestures toward this belief in his draft opinion, which notes that unenumerated rights must be “deeply rooted in this Nation’s history and tradition.” This phrase is a quote from a previous Court decision, Washington v. Glucksberg, in 1997; as Vox pointed out, Alito used this exact phrase in his dissent on Obergefell v. Hodges — the 2015 case that made same-sex marriage legal in the United States. There, Alito stated that “it is beyond dispute that the right to same-sex marriage is not among those rights [rooted in US history and tradition].”

You could argue that the right to abortion is in fact “far more deeply rooted” than the right of same-sex marriage, Franklin says: “Justice Alito and a number of the Justices likely to sign on to his opinion in Dobbs have already explained, in their dissenting opinions in Obergefell, that if their constitutional understanding of liberty prevailed, the Fourteenth Amendment would not guarantee same-sex couples the right to marry.”

“There are all sorts of ways to lessen constitutional protections for same-sex couples and LGBT[Q+] people . . . and Dobbs is likely to facilitate these efforts.”

In the draft opinion on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, Justice Alito seems to anticipate this concern. He lists 14 cases that could arguably be challenged if Roe is overturned, but then writes that because these cases don’t support the right to abortion, “our conclusion . . . does not undermine them in any way.” This ruling, Alito says, pertains only to abortion because abortion involves “critical moral question.” He says that just because other cases, such as same-sex marriage, follow the same reasoning doesn’t mean this opinion could be applied to overturn them: “We emphasize that our decision concerns the constitutional right to abortion and no other right. Nothing in this opinion should be understood to cast doubt on precedents that do not concern abortion.”

However, many politicians and experts, including Franklin, disagree. President Joe Biden said on May 3 that the draft opinion, if made official, “would mean that every other decision relating to the notion of privacy is thrown into question.” He called out marriage equality as a specific area of concern: “Does this mean that in Florida, they can decide they’re going to pass a law saying that same-sex marriage is not permissible, that it’s against the law in Florida? . . . [I]t’s a fundamental shift in American jurisprudence if [the ruling] were to hold.”

Vice President Kamala Harris echoed this opinion in a recent video for “People,” saying that “the right to privacy that forms the basis of Roe is the same foundation used to recognize other important rights, such as the right to use contraception and the right to marry someone of the same sex — someone you love.”

Not all experts agree that a Roe overturn will result in a cascade of challenges to other rights, including same-sex marriage. “There’s no national movement to overturn Obergefell,” South Texas College of Law Professor Josh Blackman told Politico. “There is no jurisdiction in the country that wants to ban interracial marriage.”

David French, a contributing writer at The Atlantic who has long litigated and written about abortion, says that while Obergefell might face a challenge, a reversal ultimately won’t succeed. This is partially because in the draft opinion, Alito emphasizes the difference between abortion and the other rights established under the right to privacy. “Abortion involves harm to a non-consenting party, the ‘potential life’ (to use the language from Roe) of the unborn child,” French explained in an essay for The Atlantic. In contrast, he says, rights like same-sex marriage and interracial marriage involve consenting adults.

To Franklin, however, these reassurances amount to “a terrible gaslighting” of the American public. “The interpretive approach the Court seems poised to adopt . . . directly implicate[s]” LGBTQ+ rights, she says. The Court may “lack the political or ideological will” to take on anti-LGBTQ+ cases and strip these people of their rights, she says, “[b]ut I wouldn’t count on it. There are all sorts of ways to lessen constitutional protections for same-sex couples and LGBT[Q+] people — indeed, the Court is already engaged in that project — and Dobbs is likely to facilitate these efforts.”

    What Happens Now?

So, what do we know for sure? First of all, Roe v. Wade has not yet been overturned — Justice Alito’s opinion is still a draft, which means justices could theoretically change their votes before the Court hands down an official ruling. (That means, too, that abortion is still currently legal.) We also know that, whatever the ultimate ruling on Roe and Dobbs, this case only directly affects the right to abortion. Any other rights that could be impacted, such as the right to contraception and same-sex marriage, will not immediately change, regardless of the final outcome.

The question is whether overturning Roe would pave the way for challenges to other privacy-based rights that, arguably, are also not “deeply rooted” in American history and tradition. Justice Alito says no, but many experts think it’s only a matter of time before similar cases start making their way to the Court, where the Dobbs reasoning — despite Alito’s assurances to the contrary — could be used as precedent for other overturns. Only time can tell whether this will be the case. In the meantime, the best thing we can do is channel frustration and anger into action by supporting abortion-rights groups and organizations that advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.

How To Lace Vans Sneakers (The Right Way)

If you’ve ever found yourself staring down haplessly at your new Sk8-His, with a set of shoelaces in one hand while using the other to scratch your head in puzzlement, this how to lace vans guide is definitely for you.

Okay, in reality, this probably isn’t a situation you’ve ever had to contend with before, because when it comes to lacing our favourite shoes, 90 percent of us (not an official statistic) just leave them the way we found them when we first took them out of the box. However, paying a little more care and consideration to how you tie them can help elevate your footwear game to the next level.

Plus, if you want to keep your kicks fresh, you should be in the habit of putting your laces in the washing machine every now and again. Especially if they’re white. The grime that builds up on white laces can let your look down even if you’ve been liberal with the suede protector.

      How To Lace Vans Sneakers

Vans has produced literally thousands of variations since they debuted in 1966, and while some of them haven’t stuck around for very long, there are four key lace-up models that have truly stood the test of time. Some of them are arguably among the the best sneakers of all time.

Here’s how to lace vans by shoe type, and remember, there are certain lacing methods that suit some models more than others.

      How to Lace Vans Authentic

The Vans Authentic was the first shoe to be produced and sold by the legendary skate brand back in 1966. On its first day, it sold just 12 pairs, but today it’s one of the most popular trainers on the planet, and with good reason it’s a style classic and can be dressed up or down with ease.

The Authentic has a basic canvas construction with a low profile and a signature waffle-tread sole. It also only features five eyelet pairs, which are fairly close together, meaning short laces are all that are required here. The lacing system is also closed at the bottom like an Oxford shoe, meaning that when you tie them up, you’ll get a neat, tight fit.

Use a flat lace in either black or white depending on the colour of the shoe, and thread it through so that it crisscrosses, over and under the eyelets, all the way up to the top where you can then tie it off into a neat bow.

Here’s how to lace Vans Authentic sneakers in the classic way:

      The Steps

      • Insert both lace ends downwards through the bottom two holes, leaving equal length on both the left and right laces.
      • Looking down on the shoe, put the left lace through the top of the next hole on the right. It should now be crossing over the tongue.
      • Mirror what you’ve just done, but with the other side, inserting the right lace through the top of the next hole on the left.
      • Keep lacing in this manner, one side at a time, remembering to insert each lace down through the top of each hole. Mirror this process with your other shoe so that they both resemble each other.

      Vans Authentic

      Vans Authentic

      How to Lace Vans Era

Designed by legendary skateboarding pioneers Tony Alva and Stacey Peralta, the Era is basically a more padded update of the Authentic, but with subtle design tweaks.

The model retains the same canvas build and a very similar silhouette, but also features a padded collar and jazzier colour combinations, making it the shoe of choice for a new generation of skaters in the late 1970s.

Given its similarity to the Authentic, the Vans Era should be laced in much the same way. Although, due to the signature colour combinations, you have a little more scope to get creative with your laces.

      Vans Era

      Vans Era

How to Lace Vans Old Skool

The original chunky trainer and very first shoe to feature the now-famous Vans side stripe, the Old Skool is similar to the Era in terms of shape but with added panelling for increased durability while shredding it on a board.

With a mixture of suede and canvas construction and reinforced stitching in the most ollied areas, the Vans Old Skool was the most hard-wearing skate shoe of its day. Today it’s an undisputed classic silhouette, immune to the ups and downs of sneaker trends It also boasts a few more eyelets than its predecessors, meaning you’ll need to go for a longer length of shoelace.

Either cross-lacing, like on the models above, or straight bar lacing are the best ways of tying things up. For the latter, thread the lace through the bottom set of eyelets and work up in an ‘S’ type pattern, leaving clean, horizontal lines on top and ensuring any other material stays hidden underneath the lace guards. This is a more complicated technique than cross-lacing, but results in a cleaner, more minimal look that complements the Old Skool’s silhouette.

      The Steps

      • Insert both lace ends downwards through the bottom two holes, leaving equal length on both the left and right laces.
      • Looking down on the shoe, insert the left lace up and through the next right-hand hole, with its end pointing to the ceiling.
      • Now put the right lace up and through the third eyelet on the left, skipping out the second. There should now be an empty hole on the left-hand side.
      • Take what is now the right lace and cross it over, inserting it downward through the empty eyelet on the left. This should create another straight bar, mirroring the first.
      • Do exactly the same with the left-hand lace and cross it over, inserting it downward through the empty eyelet opposite it. You should now have three bars.
      • Keep lacing in this way, crossing each lace over to its opposite side to make new bars until you reach the top.

      Vans Old Skool

      How to Lace Vans Sk8-Hi

The very first high-top skate shoe, the Vans Sk8-Hi brought a completely fresh look to the park when it was first launched in 1978. But it wasn’t all about aesthetics this revolutionary new shoe offered skaters increased comfort, ankle support, and shielded their ankles from rogue boards.

With its high-top styling and eight pair of eyelets, the Vans Sk8-Hi needs a long lace in order to reach the top. You’ll need something more the length of a bootlace than a shoelace.

In terms of colour and style, flat white laces look best with this particular model and will work with pretty much any colour of shoe other than all black. Due to the height of this model, bar laces will work best as it gives a more simple, pared-back finish cross lacing is a little fussy in this instance.

Here’s how to lace high top Vans with bar lacing:

      Steps

      History Of Vans

Now a staple fixture on the roads of Britain and beyond, the van was firs… Oh, hang on, wrong type of vans.

The confusion comes from the fact that as well as being a type of road vehicle used for transporting goods and people, Vans (with a capital ‘V’) is also a historic and highly-popular brand of American skate shoe.

It all started in 1966, when brothers Paul Van Doren and Jim Van Doren, along with partners Gordon Lee and Serge Delia, opened a shop in Anaheim, California, where they made and sold rubber-soled deck shoes to gnarly types on the West Coast.

As word spread from one empty Californian swimming pool to the next that these new shoes and their sticky waffle treads were rad for cruising bowls, more and more skaters began to descend on the Van Doren brothers’ little store to grab a pair for themselves.

Fast forward to the end of the 1970s, and Vans had 70 stores in California and was already starting to sell internationally. Demand never ceased, and today, especially with skate style enjoying a renaissance in recent years, the Vans brand is nothing short of a household name.

FAQs About How to Lace Vans

How can I hide my Vans laces?

If you’d rather forgo the knot on top of your shoe, you can hide your Vans laces in a couple different ways.

Lace your Vans normally, according to your preference, and when it comes time to tie the shoe, leave an ample amount of space between the tongue and the knot. Then, pull the tongue through the gap so the knot sits hidden underneath. This is a simple and quick method, but may be a bit uncomfortable if your vans fit tight.

Alternatively, lace your Vans using the bar method, and once you get to the bottom, rather than tying the knot on the outside of the shoe, tie it on the inside where the laces meet. Make sure that the knot is positioned on the outside of your foot to minimize any discomfort. With this method, you’ll be able to slip your Vans on and off hands-free.

      How tight should Vans be?

The tightness of Vans is totally up to preference, but as they’re made of canvas, they’ll expand a bit as you wear them. This means you shouldn’t lace your Vans up too tightly, especially when you’re breaking them in, because this will prevent the shoes from finding your own unique fit.

How do you lace Vans with 5 holes?

To lace Vans with five holes, or eyelet pairs, you can use either the classic or bar method, depending your own taste. However, Authentic Vans, with five eyelets are traditionally laced in the classic, criss-cross fashion.

How do you lace Vans with 4 holes?

Vans with four holes on each side are a bit trickier. While you can lace them up all the way using the classic lacing method, some people choose to forego the last eyelet pair for an easier time slipping them on and off.

Why People Are Talking About Griswold v. Connecticut After the SCOTUS Ruling

CONNECTICUT, UNITED STATES - APRIL 1963: Estelle Griswold, executive director of the Planned Parenthood League, standing outside the Planned Parenthood center, which is closed pending decision of US Supreme Court re Connecticut state law forbidding sale or use of contraceptives. (Photo by Lee Lockwood/Getty Images)

On June 24, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and removed federal protections for Americans’ right to abortion. This blow to reproductive freedom, however, could just be the beginning of even more threats to fundamental rights about what you want to do with your body.

In his concurring opinion on the case, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas argued that the logic the court used to rule against the right to abortion in this case (Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health) could then be used to reverse decisions in three other landmark cases — Griswold v. Connecticut, Lawrence v. Texas, and Obergefell v. Hodges, which establish the rights to contraception, same-sex consensual relations, and same-sex marriage, respectively. This is exactly what many people were afraid of when a draft opinion on Roe v. Wade was first leaked in early May.

If you’re nervous about the future of your right to contraception specifically, you may want to understand a little more about the Griswold v. Connecticut case. This brief background explains what the case was about, why the Dobbs ruling threatens it, and what it being challenged in the future might mean.

The Basics of Griswold vs. Connecticut

At a basic level, the 1965 Supreme Court case Griswold v. Connecticut ruled that married couples have the right to use birth control, says Rachel Fey, vice president of policy and strategic partnerships at Power to Decide, an organization dedicated to preventing unplanned pregnancy. That’s right — “it wasn’t until 1972, one year before Roe v. Wade was decided, that non-married people were able to use contraception legally,” she says.

The case came about because in Connecticut, there was a law from 1879 that banned the use of contraception. Together, C. Lee Buxton, a gynecologist at the Yale School of Medicine, and Estelle Griswold, head of Planned Parenthood in Connecticut, opened a birth-control clinic in New Haven, CT, according to Oyez, a Supreme Court archive created by Cornell’s Legal Information Institute, Justia, and Chicago-Kent College of Law. Their plan, apparently, was to use the clinic to challenge the constitutionality of the law before the Supreme Court — and it worked. Buxton and Griswold were convicted of violating this law, and their case eventually made it to the Supreme Court.

In a 7-2 decision, the Court ruled that the law was an invasion of the right to privacy, specifically the marital right to privacy, according to Cornell Law School Legal Information Institute, giving married people the right to use contraception if they so chose.

The case is important because it concluded that a right to privacy exists within the Constitution even though it isn’t explicitly stated, according to Cornell. Rather, the court used the First, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Ninth, and — most notably — the 14th Amendment to formulate a right of privacy adequate to protect the right of married couples to use birth control. (FTR, unmarried people didn’t earn the same right until 1972 via the case Eisenstadt v. Baird, Fey says.)

Essentially, Griswold v. Connecticut “established that consenting adults have a right to privacy in terms of sexual relations,” says Kimberly Hamlin, PhD, professor of history and global and intercultural studies at Miami University in Ohio. For that reason, the ruling then went on to heavily influence later Supreme Court cases — still working off this inferred right to privacy — which granted Americans other rights regarding contraception, abortion, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Why This Matters After the Overturn of Roe v. Wade

Because many cases in US law are ruled based on what another court previously decided about that particular matter, when one decision is reversed, it can impact all the other cases that were ruled in the same line of logic.

The June 24 Supreme Court decision struck down both Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, “which are two cases rooted in a constitutional right to privacy,” Fey says. “Other court rulings rooted in a constitutional right to privacy include the right to interracial marriage in Loving v. Virginia, the right to use contraception in Griswold v. Connecticut and Eisenstadt v. Baird, and the right to marry whom we choose in Obergefell. So these are all part of the same sweater, so to speak, and if you pull that thread, you endanger other rights, not just the right to access abortion.”

In Griswold v. Connecticut, “the Court found that intimate sexual contact was part of the ‘liberty’ guaranteed by the due process clause of the 14th amendment, which today’s ruling may call into question,” Hamlin adds.

At the moment, contraception (whether you’re single or married) is safe, but that’s not necessarily guaranteed for long. Some states such as Missouri are trying to restrict access to contraception by banning public funding for intrauterine devices and emergency contraception. “Some of the same policymakers who’ve been pushing these abortion bans have also been putting restrictions on contraception assets in a number of ways for many years,” Fey explains. “Whether that’s not providing necessary funding for the Title X Family Planning Program, which is federal family planning money, or carving out certain healthcare providers from being able to provide contraception through Medicaid, or trying to carve out certain methods of contraception from their own state’s Medicaid programs. These are just a few examples.”

And certain Republican lawmakers have made it clear they don’t agree with the outcome of the Griswold case. For example, Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn called Griswold “constitutionally unsound” in a video posted to her Twitter in March (though she doesn’t specify which part of the ruling she’s referencing).

Are We Going to Lose Birth Control, Sexual Choice, and Marriage Rights?

Your rights aren’t vanishing immediately, but this Supreme Court ruling is certainly cause for concern — and for a lot of reasons other than abortion. “The logic undergirding in today’s decision harkens back to a time when the only acceptable, legal sex occurred within heterosexual, patriarchal marriage,” Hamlin says.

“All of the sort of interrelated rights that allow us to live our lives on our terms and make private decisions based on our own personal values are at risk with this decision,” Fey adds. “It doesn’t mean that we’re all going to lose these rights tomorrow, but we all need to be thinking about what we can do to protect these rights going forward.”

Here’s how you can help support abortion rights and make your voice heard right now.

How to Protest the Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade

While most eyes were on celeb transformations for the 2022 Met Gala, behind the scenes, our government was fashioning a different kind of change. In leaked documents written by Justice Samuel Alito and obtained by Politico, the U.S. Supreme Court reportedly voted to renege on its trailblazing Roe v. Wade decision. The draft opinion rebukes the 1973 decision, which promised constitutional protection of abortion rights. And if anyone was unsure about this ruling, it was further solidified in 1992 via the Planned Parenthood v. Casey court case, where the U.S. Supreme court reaffirmed Roe v. Wade.

However, it seems the Supreme Court has had a change of heart. “We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” Justice Alito wrote in the document, according to Politico. Don’t fret; it’s not over…yet. The court decision won’t be finalized for another couple of months and, traditionally, justices can (and do) alter their votes as draft opinions circulate.

Nevertheless, it’s time to put on our marching shoes, because our ovaries and rights are once again in jeopardy. There are multiple ways to help, whether you want to take to the streets or support long-standing organizations doing the work. We get that this can all be overwhelming, so we put together a list of the top places to support so people can maintain the agency to do what we want with our bodies.

In the words of Toni Morrison, “Freeing yourself was one thing, claiming ownership of that freed self was another.” It’s time to reclaim our bodies and fight for our freedom of choice. Let the protesting begin.

      Grassroots Organizers

If you live in NYC, join grassroots organizers and fellow supporters in Foley Square at 5 P.M. EST today, Tuesday, May 3.

      Equality for Flatbush

If you are still on the clock at 5 P.M. EST, worry not. There is another mass protest at Barclays Center at 7 P.M. EST. today, Tuesday, May 3.

      Women’s March

On Tuesday, May 3 at 5 P.M. local time, the Women’s March is calling for supporters across the nation to go to their local federal courthouse, federal building, town hall or town square to defend abortion rights. You can add your name and sign the pledge to rally here.

      National Network of Abortion Funds

In addition to marching, there are people who need help accessing and funding their abortions. The National Network of Abortion Funds created a seamless process to find funds by state and connect donors with these funds. Why donate on a local level? National organizations like Planned Parenthood have large budgets in comparison to local funds. By donating locally, you are helping to disseminate dollars to people in your state and/or community.

      Indigenous Women Rising

The mission of Indigenous Women Rising is to honor the rights of Native and Indigenous women regarding their access to equitable and culturally safe healthcare and health education while providing resources and advocacy. This includes financial and practical support for Indigenous and Native abortion seekers. They have an abortion fund that serves both Indigenous and non-documented people nationwide, as well as a midwifery fund to support pregnant Indigenous women in need of quality care and support from a midwife or doula.

      The Brigid Alliance

Protesting doesn’t just mean marching or donating; it also means financially supporting specific measures. This includes The Brigid Alliance, an organization that helps abortion patients traveling long distances for care get transported safely to and from abortion clinics. In addition to transportation, The Brigid Alliance covers additional expenses such as child care, meals, accommodations, and other travel costs like gas and tolls.

      Avow Texas: Unapologetic Abortion Advocacy

What does a dystopian future look like allowing people no access to abortions? Texas offers a glimpse. Within the state, abortion bans begin as early as six weeks and SB 8 puts a $10,000 bounty on individuals who either help someone get or access abortion care. Avow Texas focuses on the fight against abortion stigma and helping Texans who want an abortion get the care they need.

      NARAL Pro-Choice America

Register and vote for candidates who support reproductive rights. While the presidential election is important, so are local and midterm elections. Don’t like what you’re seeing? Try and enact change on a local level. Support candidates that support the causes you care about. NARAL Pro-Choice America is an organization that spotlights candidates who prioritize women’s healthcare and reproductive freedom. In 2020, the organization advocated for over 200 candidates running for office on all levels, from the statehouse to the U.S. Senate.

      The Guttmacher Institute

Someone has to do the research, and the Guttmacher Institute is ensuring we have the correct numbers regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights worldwide. They do extensive research on abortion and provide evidence-based advocacy that helps strategic communications. They are also very transparent with their financials, so you know exactly where your donations are going.

      Full Spectrum Doula Circle

Often when we think of a doula, we think of someone helping a person deliver a baby. But a doula is actually wholly concerned with the health and care of a pregnant person, including when they are delivering a baby, but not limited to just that. Full Spectrum Doula Circle is exactly what it sounds like: an organization that focuses on the full spectrum of birth and motherhood. Founded by Sarah Whedon, Ph.D., it hosts classes and training sessions for abortion support skills, crafts rituals for abortion and pregnancy loss, and more, because all moms need support, even those who don’t deliver.

      National Abortion Federation

When we think of abortion, we may consider the patient, but it’s also essential to think about the needs and the resources of the abortion provider. That’s where National Abortion Federation steps in. Via its website, The National Abortion Federation explains that its mission is “to unite, represent, serve, and support abortion providers in delivering patient-centered, evidence-based care.” This organization also sets the standard for safe, quality abortion care.

      The Abortion Care Network

After Roe v. Wade, physicians, feminists, and those who support women’s rights began opening independent abortion clinics across the nation to ensure abortions remained accessible and affordable with high-quality care. According to the Guttmacher Institute, 95 percent of abortions performed are done by an independent clinic. The Abortion Care Network supports those clinics so patients can get access, care, and ongoing support.

What To Wear With Every Shade Of Denim

Denim: so easy to put on, and yet, so easy to get wrong. Unlike corduroy and velvet, which appear difficult (and indeed are), denim seems simple enough on the surface, but can be perilous to a man’s sartorial reputation. Take poor Justin Timberlake, for example, who still hasn’t lived down that double denim disaster some 15 years later.

When donning the most staple of workwear fabrics, the stakes are high, and each colour and wash requires an entirely different tack. With that in mind, here’s what to wear with the five most common shades to make sure you stay on the right side of history.

      Dark Wash Denim

Unlike the other washes, what constitutes as ‘dark denim’ is up for discussion. For clarity, here we’re talking raw indigo and charcoal shades – essentially anything more or less uniform in colour that isn’t black.

As a rule of thumb, the darker the denim (and the less detailing), the better pieces lend themselves to being dressed up for more formal occasions. Yet despite this versatility, there are still a few things to consider.

      How To Wear

Due to its relative stiffness, raw denim (which has been left unwashed after manufacturing) isn’t usually found in skinny fits. However, a slightly wider, slim- or straight-leg is no bad thing and will ensure that any early 2000s dodgy denim vibes are stopped in their tracks.

Whether combined with off-duty staples such as a sweatshirt or a blazer for a solid smart-casual mix, you’ll need to consider the balance of your overall outfit. Stiff denim tends to sit away from the body, so make sure that anything that you’re wearing up top and on your feet isn’t too form-fitting (read: no muscle-fit shirts).

While that’s off the menu, pretty much everything else is firmly on, be it colours (neutrals and primary tones work equally as well here), textures or other shades of denim.

Tilmann Wröbel, creative director of The Cooper Collection (the premium arm of British denim brand Lee Cooper), also recommends doubling up. “Dark shades work fantastic in double denim looks,” he says. “Dark jeans can also be paired with lighter indigo shirts for an on-trend tonal approach to dressing.”

Recommended Colours: Light wash denim, neutrals, primary colours, navy, khaki.

      Mid-Wash Denim

Anything with the word ‘mid’ in it is usually a bit drab. Middle-market, midlife, middling – basically it’s code for being unanimously naff. Apart from where mid-wash denim is concerned.

It’s a favourable shade of denim to have at your disposal, not least because of its ability to slot seamlessly into several off-duty looks.

      How To Wear

Mid-wash denim has similar requirements to all other washes. Like light wash denim, it’s important not to double up without leaving at least two shades in between pieces, and just like white denim, it benefits from contrast.

Sitting slap bang in the middle of the denim colour spectrum can make achieving enough differentiation a pain. However, that’s where texture comes into play. If you think that navy sweatshirt could result in an outfit that resembles a mechanic’s overall, opt for a waffle knit instead. The same goes when it comes to outerwear, with a rugged suede or wool leather jacket a strong choice.

Whether you opt for navy or shades like easy to throw on grey, brown or black, above all the aim should be to keep it simple. “Mid-wash denim looks great with something as simple as a plain white T-shirt,” says Levi’s vice president of Northern Europe, Richard Hurren. “Pair with classic sneakers and roll the hem for a casual summer look.”

Recommended Colours: Grey, brown, black, white.

      Light Wash Denim

Keeping up with the fortunes of light wash denim is taxing. One minute it’s the height of bad taste, the next minute it’s having a resurgence in popularity, gracing some of the best-dressed legs and torsos in menswear.

In case you were unclear on where the style world currently stands, the consensus is that it’s cool. Thanks to the nineties trend, light wash jeans, light wash shirts and light wash jackets are all on the ‘approved’ list.

      How To Wear

As much as light washes are having a moment, going double light denim remains firmly off the cards. That said, there are many ways to wear the shade while staying on the right side of dad dressing.

Frayed hems, boxier cuts and ripped detailing all nod to skate clothing, especially when worn with pieces such as hoodies or long sleeve tops under T-shirts.

Alternatively, for a more appealing everyday look, opt for relaxed fits with minimal extras and team with wardrobe basics such as a simple white T-shirt and a pair of white sneakers for a go-to high-summer look.

“I would style light denim jeans with a Breton top or a contrast colour such as light green or light grey,” says Edwin denim designer Niels Mulder. “A crew-neck sweatshirt or T-shirt also make good companions.”

If stonewash jeans remind you too much of your old man, try a jacket or shirt used as an accent to an otherwise dark outfit instead, it’s the easiest way to introduce a lighter wash into your wardrobe.

Recommended Colours: Grey, white, green, navy, black.

      Black Denim

Like most items of black clothing, the darkest of denims is a low-risk, high-reward investment to make. A favourite among well-dressed musicians (think James Bay, Alex Turner and Oasis-era Noel Gallagher), the style refuses to date, proving just how essential and versatile it is.

Because of its classic shade, when bought in a sharp, almost tailored cut, black denim can act as a sub-in for practically any other piece of black clothing – from suit trousers to chinos. It’s not all plain sailing, though.

      How To Wear

Whereas relaxed-fit light wash jeans can look charmingly nineties, black jeans have a peculiar tendency to err a little too close to emo teenager when worn wide. Similarly, skintight spray on black jeans will either veer lads holiday or post millenium indie rocker; so always go straight leg to be on the safe side.

While there’s no beating an all-black look, it also makes a perfect anchor for bolder hues. Got a primary colour sweatshirt you’re itching to wear? Team it with a pair of black jeans for a fail-safe look. Likewise, layering an on-trend pastel tee underneath a black denim jacket will help reduce its impact for those looking to branch out from the safety of neutrals.

Not quite ready to take the technicolour plunge? Camel and black is a timeless and foolproof colour combination that always looks sophisticated; try pairing a camel overcoat or suede bomber with your black jeans and a white T-shirt for an outfit that will never date.

“For a casual look, wear faded black denim jeans with a white T-shirt and an open check shirt,” suggests former Topman creative director Gordon Richardson. “This way you can button up the shirt if you need to smarten up. Or pair a crisp white Oxford shirt with black jeans then add a blazer and smart boots if you’re worried that you won’t look smart enough.”

Recommended Colours: White, black, grey, pastel shades, primary hues, camel.

      White Denim

Style is often about stepping outside of your comfort zone, and there are fewer better ways to do this than with white denim.

Aside from wearing it without looking like The Man from Del Monte, one of the main concerns here is ensuring what you wear remains the intended shade. While we can’t help you keep coffee in its cup or food on its fork, we can simplify the process of getting dressed by giving a few suggestions of what to wear it with.

      How To Wear

Sure, white denim looks great on tall, tanned sorts, but if you’re not a beanpole or are worried about being washed out, it’s not off-limits. Go for almost white denim in stone, cream or off-white, which are all more forgiving on body types and skin tones than a stark shade (not to mention slightly easier to keep clean).

Not up for jumping in legs first with jeans? A white denim jacket is a the perfect way to ease in; worn with black trousers or raw denim, it’s nigh impossible to get wrong.

If plucky enough to go the full Mick Jagger, the team at menswear etailer The Idle Man, suggests wearing them with classic staples in light neutral colourways.

White jeans make a great base to work other pieces around, so start with these and add in a black or grey T-shirt, a pair of sand desert boots and a stone or khaki field jacket.”

Recommended Colours: Black, grey, sand, tan, khaki, blue.

Megan Rapinoe Condemns “Cruelty” of SCOTUS Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade

On June 24, the US Supreme Court officially overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that upheld a person’s fundamental right to an abortion. The devastating decision, which threatens to immediately restrict the reproductive rights of those in at least 13 states and will likely have ramifications in many more, has aroused impassioned calls to action from numerous celebrities and former FLOTUS Michelle Obama. At a prematch press conference on Friday, USWNT star Megan Rapinoe held back tears as she reacted to the regressive SCOTUS decision.

“I wish that we could just talk about soccer today, but obviously, with the ruling on Roe v. Wade [confirmed], that takes precedence over everything,” she said. “It’s hard to put into words how sad a day this is for me, personally, for my teammates, for all the people out there who this is going to affect . . . Pro-choice means that we get to decide what is best for us because that is our right as human beings in this country and in the world. Pro-life does not allow anything other than one very strict religious view and belief system to be forced upon everyone else. So this will obviously have very wide-ranging effects when it comes to racism, transphobia, homophobia, and inequality.”

“I encourage people to try to understand the intersectionality of this.”

Taking a moment to dry her eyes, Rapinoe pointed out that the Supreme Court’s decision is a direct blow to trans people, nonbinary people, and other members of the queer community. “It affects a lot more than just cis women,” she says. “I encourage people to try to understand the intersectionality of this. I am a cisgendered, rich, white woman that lives in two of the most progressive cities in the world with the protection of not only myself and my resources, but this resource and this protection,” she added, touching her USWNT jacket, “as are all of my teammates. Not everyone is afforded that. We know that this will disproportionately affect poor women, Black women, brown women, immigrants, women in abusive relationships, women and girls who have been raped by family members, women who maybe just didn’t make the best choice, and that’s no reason to be forced to have a pregnancy. It will completely exacerbate so many of the existing inequalities that we have in our country.”

Rapinoe went on to add that the US government’s decision is “deeply rooted in white supremacist patriarchal Christianity” and sets a precedent for repealing laws that protect prenatal care, child care, food-assistance programs, gun laws, education, maternity leave, and more. “A majority male court making decisions about my body or any other woman’s body is completely misguided and wildly out of touch with the desires of the country, the will of the country, and the will of the people,” she said. “I encourage people to take a step back and come from a place of compassion and humanity and understand that, just because I believe something doesn’t mean everybody else has to. We all get to make our own choices, but ultimately, we need to come from a place of love and respect and autonomy to do what feels best for us.”

“We know that the lack of abortion [rights] does not stop people from having abortions. It stops people from having safe abortions.”

During such a pivotal time in the history of reproductive rights, Rapinoe added that the support of men is particularly invaluable when it comes to breeching the divide between those most affected by restrictions on their bodily autonomy and those in power. “Look in the mirror. You are complicit in all of this and you have the opportunity to do better every single day,” she said. “You have the opportunity to show up and make your voices heard, whether that’s in the workplace, on a media Zoom, in stadiums, in your family, the way that you vote. It is not a women’s issue, it is everyone’s issue . . . If you ever needed a motivation to vote, to get involved, quite literally, people’s lives depend on [your vote]. We’re talking life and death, and also your terms of what it means to be alive. If you can’t be your full self, what is the point?”

“We know that the lack of abortion [rights] does not stop people from having abortions. It stops people from having safe abortions . . . It’s very frustrating and disheartening, and frankly just infuriating, to hear that be the reason that people are wanting to end abortion rights and end this vital aspect of a woman’s, not only healthcare and basic safety in this country, but her bodily autonomy . . . There are an infinite amount of reasons why a woman chooses to do what they do with their body, none of which are anybody else’s business.”

As she prepares to join her team at a match in Utah, one of the states with trigger laws in place that will ban abortion in most circumstances, on June 28, Rapinoe made it clear that she and USWNT plan to continue using their platform to fight for their rights and those whose voices are not as loud. “We understand that, as a team, we have an incredible platform to do good in the world, and to me, this is not a political issue at all,” she said. “This is a human rights issue and I think the players in US soccer, everyone in this environment, and [those] back home in Chicago feel that same way and will support a group of women who rely on the autonomy of their bodies to do the thing that they love and to make this circus run. It is only in the benefit of everyone to do whatever we can to provide an environment where the players feel protected, supported, and have the utmost autonomy in their bodies.”

The Hamptons is a vacation spot so mythologized—in film, in music, and in literature—that it’s tempting to think of the destination as an A-lister’s Neverland. And it’s true, like clockwork, the jet-set crowd flocks to Long Island’s East End every summer in search of sun and a good time, often in the form of rejuvenating wellness experiences or booze-soaked parties along the coast. But despite the luxuriousness that blankets (almost) every surface from Westhampton to Montauk, locals know the community charm extends far beyond what money can buy—or myth can capture.

With that in mind, we dipped our proverbial toes into the LI Sound with a ride out east in a 2022 Audi RS e-tron GT, a fully electric vehicle that combines the thrill of a lightning-fast race car with the quiet purr of…well, one of those yachts that Hamptonites seem to love so much. Cruising between numerous hamlets on the hunt for good food and better company, we found you needn’t be J.Lo or SJP to enjoy what the Hamps has on tap.

Whether you’re stopping by Little Ruby’s at Ruschmeyers for the prettiest avocado toast we’ve ever laid eyes on, strolling along East Hampton’s Main Street in pursuit of a chic find at the (newly opened) Rag & Bone or Balenciaga shops, or closing out the night with romantic dinner at Fauna in Westhampton Beach, there’s something for everyone here, from the uber-fancy scenester to the low-key diner. Despite decades of history in its stately architecture and beachside abodes, this particular group of towns knows a thing or two about never growing up. Ahead, everything we discovered along the way—including the best hotels, restaurants, and experiences the Hamptons has to offer.

      Parrish Art Museum

      Hufton+Crow

With nearly 125 years of history to its name, the Parrish Art Museum offers a thought-provoking array of primarily American art in all styles—and a chance to see up-and-coming creators exhibited alongside the greats. One of the few American museums that bathes its galleries in natural light, the Parrish’s building is its own masterpiece, inspired by the nearby barns in which local artists dream up their work. The property also doubles as an ever-changing backdrop to some of the Hamptons’ best events, including the museum’s splashy fundraising gala held every summer. See what’s on display here before your trip, but try your best to visit before July 24. You won’t want to miss the enchanting paintings, prints, and sculptures that comprise “Set It Off,” curated by collector Racquel Chevremont and artist Mickalene Thomas.

Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa

      Read McKendree

A beachside spa day doesn’t get more restorative than what Gurney’s has to offer at its 30,000-square-foot Seawater Spa, newly renovated by architect Ignacio Alonso. Featuring the only ocean-fed seawater pool in North America and multiple indoor-outdoor treatment suites overlooking the Atlantic, the spa was carefully curated with input from some of the nation’s top skin- and body-care experts. Products from celebrity-adored specialists including Dr. Dennis Gross are offered alongside bespoke facials and skincare treatments. (We highly recommend the 60-minute High Performance Facial, in particular.) Post-treatment, end your day in the spa’s bathhouse, outfitted with 104-degree caldarium and 50-degree frigidarium baths along with a sauna and eucalyptus-infused steam room.

      Sí Sí

a set table at the si si restaurant on the marina in the hamptons

      Courtesy of Sí Sí

Sí Sí in East Hampton offers Mediterranean food as picturesque and sumptuous as its marina views, especially when the sun dips beneath the trees. Seafood is Sí Sí’s forte, with the spaghetti vongole and olive oil poached halibut as standout dishes. But don’t skimp on the appetizers: The charred octopus and the mezze dip—offering tzatziki, chickpea hummus, and baba ghanoush served with grilled seasonal vegetables and pita bread—are among the best in the area. (Both are best enjoyed with a cocktail, such as the jalapeño syrup-infused Spicy Affair.) Dessert is not to be missed either: The orange cheesecake with caramel sauce and passion fruit sorbet is a decadent finish to an evening spent eating, drinking, and snapping a few pics by the water.

      Calissa

the interior of the restaurant calissa in the hamptons

      Oleg March

An inconspicuous but delicious spot off Montauk Highway in Water Mill, Calissa considers itself “Mykonos in the Hamptons,” and the title is no misnomer. Whether on the patio or within Calissa’s cozy interior, executive chef Bob Abrams’s traditional Greek cuisine is only a forkful away. We suggest opting for the classics: For appetizers, order the heirloom tomato Greek salad, lamb keftedes, crispy calamari, and saganaki cheese; for dinner, grab a friend and share a whole fish. Whether it’s turbot, branzino, or red snapper, each one is simply prepared—grilled and drizzled in citrus, herbs and oil—but exploding with flavor. And don’t forget: No Greek extravaganza is complete without a finale of baklava. Stop by on a Thursday evening if you can; live music performances on the outdoor terrace will take place through mid-September from 7:30 to 9:30 P.M.

      Tutto il Giorno

wine and cheese paired with olives at the restaurant tutto il giorno in the hamptons

      Eric Striffler

Tutto il Giorno boasts some of the Hamptons’ best Italian entrées (order the gnocchi for lunch and the linguine for dinner), but it’s the restaurant’s masterful little touches that ensure more than the main course is destined for daydreaming. From the two types of complimentary bread—a house flatbread drizzled with Sicilian olive oil followed by more traditional, fresh-out-of-the-oven rolls—that kick off the experience, to the desserts—including an exceptional tiramisu—that end it, every bite is worth savoring. A lovely bonus: If you opt for Tutto’s airy, sun-lit Sag Harbor location, you’ll discover a retail component. Eye-catching Urban Zen merchandise fills the room…and will no doubt tempt you to take a piece (or two) back home with you.

A beloved Sagaponack staple since its founding in 1988, the Wölffer Estate Vineyard is a portrait of languid luxury, with its rustic-modern tasting room overlooking verdant rows of glistening grapes. Order a charcuterie board and a glass of its signature Summer in a Bottle rosé for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, or swing by the charming Wine Stand on Thursday through Sunday evenings to grab a bottle to-go. If you have time to spare, reserve a few hours to watch the sun sink down over the stables and grapes. Maybe even stick around for dessert, too—smooth-as-silk brandy and bon-bons are a testament to the old adage, “Life is short; eat dessert first.”

      Sunset Harbor

sushi and a cocktail sit on a platter overlooking a marina at sunset harbor restaurant in the hamptons

      Courtesy of Sunset Harbor

One of the newest dining establishments out east, the waterfront Sunset Harbor is an exercise in creative synergy, from family-style sharing plates (don’t miss the shrimp scampi) to mouth-watering sushi rolls. But the cocktail menu alone is worth exploring as a group, preferably from a table overlooking the boats sailing in from the bay. (A pitcher of rum punch provided our table with more than its fair share of entertainment.)

      The Surf Lodge

a set table overlooks the ocean at the surf lodge in montauk

      Max Burkhalter

The now-legendary Surf Lodge in Montauk started out as a humble Irish dive bar, but has since emerged as a staple of Hamptons nightlife. That’s largely due to its ongoing outdoor concert series, buzzy celebrity- and brand-hosted parties, sought-after hotel suites, fashion pop-ups (its now-open Beach Collective features an assortment of global brands from Serpui to Alexandre Birman), and ever-flowing decanters. The Lodge’s extensive cocktail list includes a mai tai, a negroni, an Aperol spritz, and a ginger mint lemonade made with Belvedere vodka. Plan your visit in advance—space is almost always limited—but, if you can snag one, get a table by the water and make sure to put on your dancing shoes.

      EHP Resort & Marina

a guest room at ehp resort and marina in the hamptons

      Matthew Hillman

Tucked away along East Hampton’s Three Mile Harbor, the nine-acre EHP Resort & Marina offers a peaceful, secluded retreat from the buzziness outside its walls. Formerly known as East Hampton Point, the property underwent a multi-million dollar renovation before reopening in 2021, and the attention to detail shows. Studios, suites, and standalone cottages alike are tastefully lavish, outfitted in modern coastal décor and immaculate landscaping—you’ll literally wake up to the sound of bees buzzing around the lavender just outside your window—and equipped with private patios and working fireplaces. The perks of staying on a marina go well beyond the good night’s sleep and gorgeous views: Tennis lessons are available at the resort’s private court, and the nearby Shagwong Boat Club offers yacht tours. Busy day ahead? Sneak a croissant and City of Saints coffee from the on-site Italian bakery, appropriately named Buongiorno.

      Topping Rose House

      Mark Sagliocco

Arguably one of the most sophisticated stays in an already ritzy locale, the tony Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton takes a renovated 19th-century mansion and spins it into a portrait of modern magnificence. Guests can select from colorful studios, in-house suites, or entire cottages overlooking Topping Rose Farm and the heated outdoor pool, next to which visitors can enjoy seasonal cocktail service. Craving bubbly? Veuve Clicquot announced a takeover of the hotel this summer. Bikes and beach equipment are also available, and a complimentary BMW is always waiting to shuttle you anywhere within a 5-mile radius if you’ve had a little too much to drink. That’s luxury, friends.

      Marram

a lavish guest room at marram in the hamptons

      Read McKendree

A recent addition to the Montauk resort roster, the 96-room Marram is one of the more natural, earthy offerings along the water, but don’t mistake its grounded aesthetic for a thoughtless approach. The hotel is bursting with mindful choices, from its mid-century modern-meets-Southwestern decor to its new South American café, Mostrador Marram, which offers a master class in the art of paella-making. “Barefoot luxury” is the property’s motto, proving indulgence doesn’t necessarily need to mingle with excess to have the desired impact. Bonus: Rooms are screen-free to avoid any television-prompted stress, so book an oceanfront King suite and graciously watch the tide roll in as you sip your morning coffee.

How the Eagle Inspired These Two-Spirit Jewellery Designers

      Photography courtesy of Indi City

How the Calgary-based brand’s laser-cut “Eagle Feather” earrings come to life.

“Ancestral medicine is an idea that we can all share,” says Angel Aubichon, one-half of the Two-Spirit couple behind Indi City. “Medicine is anything that brings one health and a connection to the source. Beadwork is medicine, cultural teachings are medicine and connection to the land is medicine.”

The “Eagle Feather” earrings by Indi City are part of its Ancestral Medicine Collection, which features cultural emblems such as the medicine wheel. Three mismatched cuts of acrylic are connected by metal rings, which results in an enticing sense of movement. Looks include a mix of patterns and colourways from metallics to matte textures.

“Eagle feathers are sacred to our community,” says Aubichon. “Eagles soar the highest, and we regard them as grandfathers and grandmothers. Both Alex and I received eagle feathers as a sort of rite of passage, and we wanted to share that in a respectful way by commemorating those personal stories. This particular design comes from an experience I had when I received my spirit name. I wanted to put tobacco at an eagle’s nest we had found, and while I was getting ready to place my prayers by the tree where the nest was located, I looked down and saw the biggest, most beautiful and perfect eagle feather lying there at my feet. It felt like a gift from the Creator and the Ancestors. This is the same feather that we use to smudge our home and our family.”

It starts out with a rough sketch, says Aubichon. “Alex perfects it into digital copy, and then we laser cut a sample.” Aubichon and Alex Manitopyes’s home has a separate studio for each of them, but their team works from the Ancestor Atelier — a two-bedroom mid-century-modern home five minutes away. Designs are produced in limited quantities (that typically sell out quickly, natch), and Aubichon says there’s even more to come in terms of eco-mindedness: “Currently, we source our materials from a variety of manufacturers. But in the future, we hope to create our own materials from scraps and offcuts.”

25 Of The Best Men’s Sweatpants To Keep You Looking Good and Cozy (2022 Edition)

Loungewear is having its moment right now and men’s sweatpants are flying off shelves around the world. Gone are the days when sweats are confined to the couch, gym, and sporadic errand running. The best sweatpants for men are everywhere now, from the (home) office to the pub and beyond.

It may sound silly to hunt down the best sweatpants for men, especially if you’re still wearing that team-issued pair from the early 2000s. But doesn’t that make the case for sweats even more compelling? The most comfortable closet staple is getting an upgrade and we’re here to break down the very best men’s sweatpants on the market today that look a hell of a lot better than the hole-ridden pair you’re wearing right now.

On top of the traditional baggy fits, this year’s sweats feature straight legs or slim silhouettes, allowing guys to dress them up to hit the town or keep things cozy close to home. Versatility is the name of the game and man, are we here for it.

Whether you’re looking to upgrade your loungewear selection, or simply on the hunt for the next pair in a growing collection, keep reading for the best men’s sweatpants to carry you from the couch to the outside world, no change of outfit needed.

Eye-catching colors and flattering fits is what Scandinavian brand Norse Projects is all about, and these men’s sweatpants are no exception. Coming in hues like sea blue, beech green, oyster white, and more, you’ll want one in every color after feeling how comfortable they are. Plus, these pants are super practical with huge front pockets, a back patch pocket, and a drawstring to get a snug fit every time.

Designed with a regular tapered fit that’s roomy around the seat and tight around the ankles makes these pants easy to dress up or down. For casual days around the crib, they look perfect with a t-shirt or hoodie. Wearing them out? Pair these organic cotton fleece pants with a leather jacket and a pair of Timberlands for an edgy, polished look.

Material: 100% organic cotton | Color Options: 6 | Fit: Regular tapered | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: XS – XXL

For the ultimate budget men’s sweatpants, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better (or more inexpensive) pair than these Hanes EcoSmart fleece pants. Hanes has been a player in the loungewear game for more than 120 years, creating comfortable basics that you can count on for years to come.

These fleece sweats are simple but do the trick with two side pockets, an internal drawcord, and six neutral color options. Rather than a cuffed ankle, these pants feature an open hem and a classic relaxed fit. What’s more, you’ll be able to feel good about this purchase as up to 5% of the materials used to craft them comes from recycled plastic bottles.

      Material: 50% cotton, 50% polyester fleece | Color Options: 6 | Fit: Relaxed | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: S – 3XL

For a unique pair of men’s sweatpants that are as comfortable as they are stylish, the Unit model from Axel Arigato is on-trend and has a distinct street style vibe thanks to the visible seams on the legs and vintage dye job.

The relaxed fit and open hems make them easy to wear around the house or out on the town, paired with a crisp white t-shirt and a pair of sneakers. The faux fly gives them a slightly dressier look than a pair of lounge pants, and the organic cotton construction guarantees softness no matter how many times they go through the wash.

Material: Organic cotton | Color Options: 2 | Fit: Relaxed | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: XS – XL

Arguably some of the most luxurious men’s sweatpants in the world, this pure cashmere pair by Luca Faloni screams “only the best”. They are made in Italy, after all. With six neutral colorways and a slim tapered fit, these men’s sweatpants can be worn anywhere with style and the ultimate comfort.

Like all good sweats, these pants have two slide pockets and a drawstring waist, giving much-needed relief after a big meal or a few hours on the couch. Wear them with plain t-shirts, an oxford, or your coziest sweater, finished with anything from sneakers to Chelsea boots, or slippers if you prefer.

Material: 100% cashmere | Color Options: 6 | Fit: Slim tapered | Care: Hand wash | Size Range: XS – XXL

Crafted from organic cotton and natural dyes, these unisex sweatpants are a must-have for any guy’s wardrobe. They have the classic sweatpant fit with a relaxed silhouette, finished with two side pockets and elastic cuffs at the ankles. They’re easy to pair with pretty much anything already in your closet but to simplify things further, grab a matching hoodie and make a full sweatsuit out of it.

Eye-catching colors and sustainability is what Spanish brand Neutrale is all about, with a mission to design timeless products through ethical and clean processes. Not to mention how insanely comfortable these pants are, which will make them your new go-to’s, guaranteed.

Material: 100% organic cotton | Color Options: 4 | Fit: Relaxed | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: XS – XL

Heavyweight and sturdy, these men’s sweatpants from CDLP are ideal for year-round wear. Rather than feeling every gust of wind cut through your pants, these are sure to keep you cozy without sacrificing breathability, thanks to the loopback knit and organic cotton blend. This also ensures they retain their shape without losing softness, wash after wash.

These sweats feature a classic fit, though if you choose to size down, you’ll have a more tailored look thanks to the taper going into the ankles. They’re durable, high quality, and full of subtle details, like the back patch pocket and embroidered logo on the front leg.

Material: 50% recycled cotton, 50% organic cotton | Color Options: 3 | Fit: Relaxed | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: XS – XXL

Looking for a pair of where-anywhere sweats? Wax London goes above and beyond with their Eno Joggers, designed to look like a pair of distressed jeans without sacrificing the comfort of men’s sweatpants. What sets these sweats apart from other pairs on this list is they have a distinctly faded denim look, with pockets, a drawstring, and a faux fly to top it off.

Since these pants are on the fitted side with a taper and elastic ankle cuffs, they won’t look sloppy if you wear them out and about. Match them with a pressed white t-shirt, dark-colored hoodie, or even a denim jacket for colder days. When it comes to footwear, you’ll have an easy time wearing these men’s sweatpants with sneakers, boots, and even sandals.

      Material: 100% organic cotton | Color Options: 4 | Fit: Regular tapered | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: 28 – 38

If you’ve ever considered wearing men’s sweatpants for smart casual… Don’t.

Unless they’re the Coburn pants from A Day’s March. These sleek trousers will fool anyone into thinking you’re dressed up, when in fact, you’re in lounge pants. The open hem at the ankles goes a long way into making these pants look like they’re tailored, and the drawstring at the waist is totally in right now.

To wear these clean-cut sweats the best, pair them with a tucked-in, heavyweight t-shirt with an unstructured blazer on top. For a more pared-back look, swap the blazer for a quarter zip or knit sweater, and seal the deal with a pair of white leather sneakers.

Material: 100% organic cotton | Color Options: 3 | Fit: | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: S – XL

Outdoor Voices is disrupting the sportswear industry with its high-quality, affordable clothing that can be taken from the couch to the gym with no effort at all. The All Day Sweatpant is a cult favorite with more than 200 five-star reviews. It’s no wonder, as they’re some of the softest pants on the market, made from signature CloudKnit fabric. They have polyester for softness and spandex for a bit of stretch, making this one pair of pants you’ll never want to take off.

Thanks to the flattering tapered fit, these men’s sweatpants can be casual or smart. Pair them with a solid-colored t-shirt and a pair of New Balance dad shoes, or dress them up with a bomber or denim jacket when you’re headed out for a drink. When it comes to the best cold weather men’s sweatpants, North Face reigns supreme with their City Standard pant. Wear these pants with any of your other athletic gear, or dress them up with a crisp oxford shirt, a quarter zip sweater, and a pair of Chelsea boots.

Material: 91% recycled polyester, 9% elastane | Color Options: 6 | Fit: Regular tapered | Care: Machine wash cold | Size Range: XS – XXL

As far as details go, these pants stay on top with a loopback cotton jersey construction, faux fly, back patch pocket, and adjustable drawstring. This is designer clothing made practical, and a wardrobe staple you’ll be reaching for years to come.

Material: 100% cotton | Color Options: 1 | Fit: Slim tapered | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: S – XXL

Look your best in a crisp white shirt and a pair of Timberlands and you’ll be ready for anything the day throws at you, couch time included.

Material: 100% organic cotton | Color Options: 2 | Fit: Relaxed | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: S – XXL

If track pants count as sweats, then these are some of the best. It doesn’t get any more iconic than the Adidas Tiro warmups, with the signature three stripes down the side and unmissable logo on the front thigh. Thanks to the tapered fit, you can wear these pants from the gym to the bar, though they have a distinctly athletic feel and may not be suitable for dressier occasions.

Whether you’re hanging around or getting active, these pants are the perfect companion as there’s a little extra room in the seat for movement and tighter ankles for a close fit. One of the best elements of these pants is the front zippered pockets to stash your valuables safely. The ankles also feature zips, so you can slide these bad boys over your shoes and hit the street in a flash.

Material: 100% polyester | Color Options: 3 | Fit: Regular tapered | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: XS – 4XL

Brooklinen makes getting dressed a treat with their buttery soft Bushwick Pants, some of the best sweatpants for men out there. They’re slightly lighter than their other sweats, the Bergan Joggers, but are still suitable for all-season wear and will quickly become your new closet staple.

Made responsibly in California, these pants make looking good effortless. Dapper made easy, wear these fleecy pants with t-shirts or long sleeves, hoodies, or jackets. They come in three colors, plus two limited edition hues, and have all the details that good lounge pants should, like a hidden drawcord, roomy front pockets, and even a back patch pocket for extra goodies.

Material: 47% cotton, 47% modal, 6% spandex | Color Options: 5 | Fit: Regular tapered | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: XS – XXL

High-end basics have met their match at Japanese brand Uniqlo, who cranks them out for a budget. Designed with simplicity and style above all else, these pants go up to 3XL, ensuring there’s a perfect fit for every guy out there. In six interesting colors, you’ll be able to find a pair that suits your unique style or scoop up a few to mix and match.

Coming in at under $30, these pants have little competition when it comes to pure value. They’re created with a super soft cotton blend and feature a ribbed waistband and cuffs, drawstring, and front and back pockets. If you prefer the classic baggy sweatpant fit, size up for a slouchier look. For a more fitted silhouette, stay true to size or even size down, then pair with a denim jacket and white leather sneakers for an unbeatable (and most comfortable) look.

      Material: 72% cotton, 28% polyester | Color Options: 6 | Fit: Relaxed tapered | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: S – 3XL

It’s virtually impossible to talk about sportswear or loungewear (which are pretty much interchangeable at this point) without a mention of Nike. This powerhouse is one of the most iconic names out there, so it’s no wonder they’re also responsible for some of the best sweatpants for men.

The Dri-Fit training pants embody classic warmups with a moisture-wicking construction, elastic waistband, and ankle cuffs. They’re rather breathable and quite lightweight, without sacrificing warmth for cooler months. The deep pockets are a welcome addition and the tapered leg keeps them from looking too slouchy. Overall, if you’re on the hunt for athletic men’s sweatpants, whether you hit the gym or not, these should do the trick.

Material: 100% polyester | Color Options: 2 | Fit: Regular tapered | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: S – XXL

Rather than loud and noisy streetwear, this pair of Off-White men’s sweatpants keeps it simple without sacrificing style. Less is more these days and Off-White achieves peak design with a simple logo on the front and a concise white squiggle on the calves of each leg.

Though $600 may be steep for loungewear, these exclusive pants will fulfill all of your streetwear desires without skimping on quality. Made from cotton-jersey material and finished with an elastic waist and cuffs, these men’s sweatpants are a breeze to match with any solid-colored sweatshirt, logo t-shirt, and designer kicks.

Material: 100% cotton | Color Options: 1 | Fit: Relaxed | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: XS – XL

Nothing screams classic preppy like a pair of J Crew sweatpants, yet this pair breaks out of the mold with a more relaxed fit than the brand is known for. Due to this, the pants run slightly large, so size down if you’re after a more tailored look.

Comfy as can be with French terry fabric, these pants have two slant pockets, an adjustable drawstring, and elastic ankle cuffs. Since they’re slightly baggy, they’re best confined to the house or quick errands paired with a contrasting hoodie, flannel, and pair of dad shoes. For a contemporary spin on a classic trend, throw on a gold chain, bomber jacket, and a pair of Doc Martens and you’ll be the best-dressed guy in the room.

Material: Cotton French terry | Color Options: 4 | Fit: Relaxed | Care: Machine wash | Size Range: XS – XXL

What to Look For in Men’s Sweatpants

When it comes to the best men’s sweatpants, these are the key considerations to keep in mind.

      Fabric

Fabric is arguably the most important consideration when it comes to choosing the best pair of sweatpants for men. For a classic sweatpant feel, you can never go wrong with cotton, which is super soft and can withstand countless runs through a washing machine.

These days, tons of brands are opting for a cotton French terry construction, while others stick to standard jersey or fleece for added warmth. If you’re after a pair of hybrid men’s sweatpants that you can work out and lounge in, a polyester blend is a safe bet, especially one that incorporates spandex or elastane for that little bit of stretch.

      Warmth

You’ll also want to think about the weight of the sweatpants as this is the main factor contributing to warmth. Because let’s be honest, there’s no worse feeling than wind whipping through a pair of tattered trousers.

Thin cotton or linen men’s sweatpants may only be suitable for summer or house wear, while a thicker pair of fleece sweats are best confined to winter months. Polyester and dri-fit fabrics work year round as they have a decent degree of warmth, but they’re often unlined which means they don’t hold up super well against the elements. When it comes to a pair of sweats you can wear 365 days a year, French terry or cotton jersey are your safest bets.

      Details

The last thing to keep in mind when it comes to the best sweatpants for men are any extra details. At the very minimum, a good pair of men’s sweatpants should have two side slant pockets, an elastic waist, and a drawstring.

Soe brands go above and beyond and incorporate elements like a back patch pocket, a faux fly, and a tapered design for a more tailored fit. If you plan on wearing your sweats out and about, it pays to keep an eye out for extra details that make the sweats look more like standard-issue trousers.

      FAQ

        • How to style men’s sweatpants is surprisingly easy. For a casual look, pair sweats with a solid colored t-shirt, a hoodie or crewneck, and a pair of white sneakers. If you want to dress up your look, incorporate a button up oxford, bomber jacket, or even an unstructured blazer with a pair of leather Chelsea boots for a polished ‘fit.

          • If you’re debating sizes when it comes to men’s sweatpants, the safest bet is to stick true to size and match your sweats to your underwear size. That said, tapered sweatpants tend to have a tighter fit, so you may want to consider sizing up.

On the other hand, relaxed sweats tend to look baggy, so you might think about sizing down for a more tailored fit. When all else fails, consult the brand’s sizing chart and you’ll be good to go.

            • How tight men’s sweatpants should be depends on the design. Traditional sweatpants are generally loose all the way from the seat to the ankles, unless there are elastic cuffs for a tapered finish.

Slim fitting tapered sweatpants should be slightly looser in the seat while getting progressively tighter around the legs and ankles. The tightness of men’s sweatpants is up to personal preference but should be kept in mind when deciding on the style and size before purchasing.

In Powerful Dissent, Liberal SCOTUS Justices Call Roe v. Wade Overturn “Cavalier”

WASHINGTON DC - JUNE 23 Abortion rights and anti abortion protesters gathered in the rain outside the US Supreme Court on June 23, 2022 in Washington, DC. Both sides are awaiting a decision on the landmark Roe v. Wade case but none was issued on Thursday. (Photo by Michael Robinson Chavez/The Washington Post via Getty Images)

The Supreme Court voted today to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that established a pregnant person’s right to an abortion. With a 6-3 vote, conservative justices took the majority and upended nearly 50 years of settled precedent.

The decision, however, was not met without dissent, particularly from liberal Supreme Court Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, and Elena Kagan. In arguing that abortion should remain a constitutional right, the justices called the majority’s approach “cavalier,” stating that there is “no good reason for the upheaval in law and society it sets off.”

The trio also noted that “the Court reverses course today for one reason and one reason only: because the composition of this Court has changed.” They emphasized the disregard of precedent, writing, “Roe and Casey have been the law of the land for decades, shaping women’s expectations of their choices when an unplanned pregnancy occurs. Women have relied on the availability of abortion both in structuring their relationships and in planning their lives.”

Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagan also pointed to the harsh and brutal implications of the decision on pregnant people. “Some States have enacted laws extending to all forms of abortion procedure, including taking medication in one’s own home. They have passed laws without any exceptions for when the woman is the victim of rape or incest. Under those laws, a woman will have to bear her rapist’s child or a young girl her father’s — no matter if doing so will destroy her life,” they wrote.

“”Across a vast array of circumstances, a State will be able to impose its moral choice on a woman and coerce her to give birth to a child.”

The trio wrote that the decision gives states the freedom to compel women to carry to term fetuses with severe and fatal physical anomalies and opens the door for states to mandate that pregnancies be carried out despite risk of death or physical harm to the pregnant person: “Across a vast array of circumstances, a State will be able to impose its moral choice on a woman and coerce her to give birth to a child.”

The justices also called out the decision’s “geographically expansive effects” and financial impact on pregnant people. “Today’s decision, the majority says, permits ‘each State’ to address abortion as it pleases,” the justices wrote. “That is cold comfort, of course, for the poor woman who cannot get the money to fly to a distant State for a procedure. Above all others, women lacking financial resources will suffer from today’s decision. In any event, interstate restrictions will also soon be in the offing. After this decision, some States may block women from traveling out of State to obtain abortions, or even from receiving abortion medications from out of State.”

The three justices also repudiated the possible effort some states will make to criminalize the supply of information or funding that helps women gain access to other states’ abortion services. “Most threatening of all, no language in today’s decision stops the Federal Government from prohibiting abortions nationwide, once again from the moment of conception and without exceptions for rape or incest,” the dissenting opinion notes. “If that happens, ‘the views of [an individual State’s] citizens’ will not matter. The challenge for a woman will be to finance a trip not to ‘New York [or] California’ but to Toronto.”

The justices warned that this decision could pave the way for states to impose bans on other reproductive resources, including contraception and the morning-after pill. And while the majority argues the contrary, other rights, such as same-sex relations and same-sex marriage, could also come up for reconsideration. In fact, Justice Clarence Thomas stated in his opinion that the Court should reconsider these cases.

“Not until Roe, the majority argues, did people think abortion fell within the Constitution’s guarantee of liberty,” the liberal justices said. “The same could be said, though, of most of the rights the majority claims it is not tampering with. The majority could write just as long an opinion showing, for example, that until the mid-20th century, ‘there was no support in American law for a constitutional right to obtain [contraceptives].’ . . . So one of two things must be true. Either the majority does not really believe in its own reasoning. Or if it does, all rights that have no history stretching back to the mid-19th century are insecure. Either the mass of the majority’s opinion is hypocrisy, or additional constitutional rights are under threat. It is one or the other.”

The justices ended their dissent with a last line: “With sorrow — for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection — we dissent.”

Jennifer Lopez is back with another summer mood board-worthy street style look.

Yesterday, the singer stepped out in Los Angeles wearing a backless black sundress with an airy skirt and a tight bodice, which also featured a halter neckline and a deep-V cut. She paired the dress with minimal accessories, opting for black heels, stud earrings, and a brown tote bag.

She kept her glam equally minimalistic, going for her signature nude lipstick and tying her hair up in a sleek high ponytail.

Earlier in the week, J.Lo was spotted wearing another all-black summer look while visiting fiancé Ben Affleck on the set of his forthcoming movie, an untitled project that follows a Nike marketing executive’s journey to persuade Michael Jordan to represent the brand.

At the time, the Marry Me actress wore a black jumpsuit that cinched at her waist with a drawstring. She paired the outfit with strappy black platform espadrille heels, pulled from her JLO Jennifer Lopez shoe line, plus minimal jewelry and tinted sunglasses.

The multi-hyphenate opened up about how she navigates her career and her personal life during a recent appearance on Good Morning America.

“I love my career, but nothing is more fulfilling to me than being able to build my family with someone who I love deeply and is just as dedicated to family and to each other as we can be,” she said. “I love the idea of the future and what we can create, but I really want to savor the moment.”

Elle Fanning Shares How Her Love of Vintage Translates to Beauty

While Memorial Day Weekend is the kickoff to the summer season for many, it’s Cannes Film Festival for in-demand celebs. It’s the day after Elle Fanning’s Cannes red carpet debut, and she’s gushing: “Cannes is such a glamourous place, but it’s also on the beach, so during the day, I try to be very glowy; I want to stay fresh, and I like a dewiness to the skin.” The Great actress is on the go—right after Cannes, she is heading to Paris and then back to London to start filming Season three of The Great. Nevertheless, she takes 15 minutes from her beach day to talk with ELLE about her summer beauty routine, which era inspires her red carpet looks, and the key to kicking nail-biting.

For Elle Fanning, journeying to the South of France means it’s time to kick up her sun protection. “My summer beauty must-have is sunscreen because I’m the palest person ever,” she laughs. Low-maintenance beauty looks are in, focusing on skin, which is in alignment with the beauty looks Fanning loves. Fanning likes to keep her off-duty routine simple when not on the red carpet simple: “I always have a concealer; L’Oreal has this kind of crayon, True Match Concealer. It’s like, the lightest one, but it’s so perfect,” she reveals. Like many fans of the affordable product, Fanning raves about the formula—“It goes on easily. I love it. That’s always in my bag.” In addition to concealer, Fanning loves blush. “That is my number one,” she states regarding her “must-haves”—“I want to look like I have rosy cheeks,” she explains.

However, when it’s time to turn up the glam, Fanning isn’t afraid to go bolder and looks to Old Hollywood to show her the way. “I have always loved [Marilyn Monroe]—Grace Kelly [too],” she shares, which is no surprise, as it’s public knowledge of Fanning’s love for vintage clothing. Her style choices are reminiscent of the era. The star was spotted wearing Lapima’s Julieta sunglasses in black days before. The chic cat-eye frame paid homage to an age she loves. “The 50s-60s are my favorite beauty era regarding makeup. I think it’s glamorous and sexy for a woman,” she coos. She’s a fan of the cat-eye, originating in ancient Egypt and popularized in the United States in the 1950s. “I think it really can make you stand out, but I’m not doing it myself,” exclaims Fanning before adding, “Oh God, I can do one [eye], I just can’t do the other one!”

While a cat-eye maybe her red carpet go-to, she splurges on getting manicures consistently, no matter the occasion. However, her luxe must have more, which regulates a lousy beauty habit. Fanning confesses, “I used to bite my nails badly. And I just recently grew them out. So, I’m going to the nail salon because I want to keep polish on them. I don’t want to bite them off again after being a nail-biter for so many years.” She is adamant about keeping a consistent appointment with her nail tech because it’s helping her bite the habit (pun intended).

“That carpet is just huge, a 360-degree situation. You have to look good from all sides,” Fanning emphasizes. She divulges her look for the Top Gun premiere and reveals the inspo was old Hollywood, “Big cat eye, some false lashes, nice rosy cheeks. It was fun. I call it my baby doll look.” With the crystal bow in her hair and imperfect curls, it’s safe to say her entire team understood the assignment.

Though colouring curls can be daunting, the team at UrbanCurls boutique is well equipped to colour all curls and coils. Here, stylists use a “curl colour fusion” technique, expert Keina Morgan tells us. “This is a form of using highlights and balayage to create a highlight and lowlight effect that helps to give amazing blending in super coily textures.” For lasting strength, the process is sealed with luxurious Olaplex and colour lock treatments. Though the ministry hasn’t been responsive, Ashoori says she has had help from local politicians, organizations and businesses.

Zoma Beauty Salon owner Elizabhet Kiffle and her go-to assistant Ester both boast expertise in all types of curls, and are well-versed in doing an array of textured hairstyles, from sleek blow-outs to locs. But the salon’s true specialty is braids, and, on any given day, you can spot both men and women sitting in the shop getting their hair washed and plaited.“I grew up in braids,” expresses Elizabhet, going on to explain that in her home country of Ethiopia, plaits play a heavily ingrained role in the culture. Just turn to the striking portraits and artwork dotted all over the colourful shop and you’ll come to learn about the significance different braided hairstyles hold in various Ethiopian tribes and groups.

The Only Shirt and Tie Combination Tips You’ll Ever Need

The paradox of choice (also known as choice overload) is the phenomenon by which having too many options exhausts us, makes us unhappy, and generally leads us to make terrible decisions (if any decision at all).

Nowhere is this more evident in the male wardrobe than when it comes to shirt and tie combinations. A quick glance around any workplace will confirm this. Is it possible that all these men have bad taste, or are they simply suffering from decision fatigue?

We get it, colors and patterns can be difficult to master individually, but when you start mixing them together, all hell can break loose. This is why FashionBeans has put together a complete guide to shirt and tie pairings.

Shirt & Tie Combinations: Color Wheel Basics

The concept of color matching continues to stump even the most stylish of men. However, unless you want your work wardrobe to be very, very dull, you will at some point have to tackle the issue.

The tried-and-tested color wheel offers a visual representation of every shade and, more importantly, the similar, complementary, and contrasting colors of each.

Basic color wheel for shirt and tie combinations

      Similar Colors

Similar colors are next to each other. When colors are close to each other, it’s easy to pick one color and add accessories in neighboring colors.

      Complementary Colors

Complementary colors are opposite each other. These colors are the hardest to pair together. Even though they ‘complement each other, wearing them full strength is often overkill.

      Contrasting Colors

These have three colors between them. The best way to combine them is to make sure one of the hues is in a darker tone so, such as navy and red.

Shirt & Tie Combinations: Colour Pairing Guidelines

Here are some tips to keep in mind when it comes to the colors in your shirt and tie combinations.

      1. Try Pairing Contrasting Colors

When it comes to shirts and ties, it’s often easier to pair contrasting colors than it is complementary. For example, a mid-blue shirt and burgundy tie (red is a contrasting hue) worn under a navy, single-breasted type of suit is a look that every man can pull off.

      2. Vary the Shades of Complementary Colors

When working with complementary colors, the key is to vary the shades, such as a light blue shirt with a darker, burnt orange tie. Of course, this will already be second nature because a tie should always be darker than the shirt, without exception.

      3. Experiment

The easiest and safest option is to combine a simple tie with a white shirt – but where’s the fun in that? Experiment with colors and patterns, and you will quickly learn what works and what doesn’t, eventually creating some go-to shirt and tie combinations that you can reach for on a daily basis.

How to Select the Right Tie

A tie says a lot about a man, so use these tips when it comes to picking out ties for your wardrobe.

      Invest in Quality

In this sartorial marriage, the tie is always going to be the first thing people notice. Therefore, it pays to give it some attention and invest in quality. That doesn’t have to mean expensive, but it does mean tasteful. While you want a tie that looks great on its own (though we’d never recommend wearing it as such), it shouldn’t be a novelty piece.

      Choose the Right Size

Size is another key consideration. In general, the width of the tie should match the width of the lapels on the suit it’s being worn with, which, in turn, should complement your body type. Lastly, always tie a tie in a way that fits both your face shape and the type of collar on the shirt.

      Occasion Determines Fabric

When selecting a fabric for your tie, consider the occasion. Traditional silk ties tend to be reserved for formal business settings, while more textured fabrics such as wool work well for smart- and business-casual events. Knitted ties, the rebellious younger brother of the tie world, fall into a somewhat helpful grey area. They can be either dressed up or down depending on what they are worn with – be it a bespoke suit or cardigan.

What Tie To Wear With Plain Shirts

Along with raw denim and quality shoes, well-cut cotton shirts are one of the main workhorses of the male wardrobe. By default, every man should own three colors: white, sky blue and pink.

White shirts offer maximum versatility, serving as a blank canvas for almost any tie, be it a preppy stripe, tartan check or solid knitted version. It’s here that more characterful designs can be deployed without fear of putting a foot (or, rather, neck) wrong.

What Tie To Wear With Blue Shirts

Shirts in blue or pale pink provide a chance to show off your color-matching prowess and are a welcome break from the white shirt norm. Sticking to the rules of color, size, and fabric, light blue shirts work well with tonal, patterned, or textured ties in the same family.

Orange is a complementary color, though it’s wise to opt for a darker, burnt orange shade to avoid being mistaken for an airline worker.

Both yellow and red are contrasting hues, so ties in shades of burgundy, pink or mustard also look great set against this shirt color.

Green is a similar color to blue – so try a dark forest green tie to make a refined and effortless statement.

What Tie To Wear With Pink Shirts

Men wear pink. If that statement sounds alien to you, we suggest you get on board pronto or risk missing out on an extremely versatile piece of workwear.

Similar colors include mauve and purple. Opt for either of these in a deep shade, and you can’t go wrong.

Green is complementary, and therefore khaki shades are a bold choice that will make you stand out for all the right reasons in the office.

Blue, on the other hand, is a contrasting color and we would argue that there is no better shirt and tie pairing than a pink shirt with a predominantly navy tie, whether solid or patterned.

What Tie To Wear With Black Shirts

No longer just for mobsters and stagehands, black shirts have returned from the sartorial hinterland in recent years.

What makes things difficult here is that black doesn’t appear on the color wheel (on account of being the absence of color and therefore not a color itself.)

This explains why the only color tie that can realistically be paired with a black shirt is a tonal one.

For an easier, but less formal option, ditch the tie altogether and wear it buttoned to the top under a black suit jacket.

What Tie To Wear With Striped Shirts

Introducing a pattern is where things become interesting. The standard rules around color, size, and fabric choice still apply, but there’s the added consideration of making sure whichever tie is added harmonizes rather than fights with the shirt for attention.

The easiest way to avoid this is to wear a tie in a block color. However, if you’re looking to branch out into pattern-mixing, there is one simple rule to follow: always vary the size of the patterns. Just as the tie should be darker than the shirt, the pattern should be larger or smaller than that on the shirt.

Stripes can work well with other stripes, so long as they aren’t the same size. For instance, a thin pencil stripe shirt is the perfect anchor for a larger club stripe tie. Another great tip is to vary the orientation of the stripes combined. For instance, a vertical striped shirt pairs best with a horizontal or diagonal striped tie as it offers a clear contrast between each piece.

For a move of higher sartorial difficulty, progress onto polka dots, paisley, and geometric designs. All are fair game providing the basic principles are adhered to.

Whether opting for a solid or pattern, picking out the color of the shirt’s stripe and matching it with one of the hues on the tie helps pull the entire look together and marks you out as a man that pays attention to detail.

What Tie To Wear With Checked Shirts

It might seem logical that combining a check shirt with a patterned tie would follow a similar set of rules to those of the striped shirt. But this isn’t the case. While a striped shirt can work with a bigger or smaller pattern, a check shirt always requires a tie with a larger pattern to avoid it becoming lost. The only exception to this rule is a windowpane check shirt, which offers greater flexibility due to the scale being so large and the pattern so subtle.

Gingham check shirts are the most traditional and dress code-friendly available. More often than not, this pattern features a white base with an overlaying color. When picking a similar, contrasting, or complementary shade tie, look to coordinate it with the check color rather than the white base. For example, a navy tie looks great with a sky blue or pink gingham check shirt.

If opting for a larger tartan or plaid shirt, the key is to pick out one of the more subtle base tones in the shirt with a solid, block-color tie. Just remember to keep the shade darker than the shirt itself.

Striped ties are a perfectly acceptable choice to combine with check shirts. Choose a tie with a large, bold stripe so that it can easily stand out against the pattern of the shirt. Polka dots and paisleys can also work well providing the same principle is followed.

What Tie To Wear With Textured Shirts

In recent years, a growing number of companies have adopted business-casual or even smart-casual dress codes, making room for a new set of power players in the workwear roster.

Toning down a classic blazer with shirts in casual fabrics like chambray, denim, and flannel has become a go-to move for guys who want to say: ‘I conduct my business with a bit of character’. Yet this newfound freedom doesn’t come without its own set of rules, particularly when concerning tie selection for your outfit.

While many other pairings rely on creating contrast, tactile shirts require equally tactile ties. The usual guidelines around color remain in place but steer clear of silk ties or anything else with a sheen. Pairing a non-traditional dress shirt with a traditional tie only creates a disjointed look.

Knitted or woolen ties should be the go-to choice here, the classic combination being a button-down chambray shirt with either a navy knitted or grey wool tie; both perfect for a more relaxed job interview.

In the case of linen shirts, the advice is often to swerve ties altogether. The lightweight fabric of the shirt with the heavier weight of the tie usually results in an unbalanced look. So in place of something knotted at the neck, give the air-tie a go. Hey, it still has the word ‘tie’ in it.

      Shirt and Tie Combo FAQs

If you still have some lingering questions about shirts and ties combinations, check out these FAQs for more information.

How do you match a dress shirt and tie?

If you want to match a classic dress shirt and tie, you’ll want to have a basic understanding of the color wheel, or at the very least, complimentary and contrasting colors. With these fundamentals, matching a dress shirt and tie is a breeze.

What shirt and tie should I wear with a black suit?

Black suits are like a blank canvas, but with so many options it can be tricky to know where to begin. Simplicity goes a long way when it comes to formal dress, so consider keeping it traditional with a white shirt and black tie. To spice things up a bit, try out a light blue shirt with a dark orange tie, or a textured shirt with a knit tie.

Should a tie be darker then the shirt?

As a very loose guideline, yes, a tie should be darker than the shirt to draw attention to your chest. That being said, a lighter tie is the obvious choice for darker shirts, and in various instances where colors contrast or compliment either other.

What color shirt and tie should I wear to an interview?

Interviews are an opportunity to show your best self, but also to secure a job that you probably want. Do some research to understand the kind of company you’re stepping into. This should give you signals as to whether you should keep things traditional or spice them up.

If it’s a serious business environment, simple works best, so consider a white dress shirt with a dark colored tie. But if the dress code appears to be more laid back or it’s a creative environment, try out a light colored shirt with a patterned tie to show off your unique style.

At Least 6 Have Died in Florida’s Meningococcal Disease Outbreak

At least six people have died in a meningococcal disease outbreak in Florida, the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in a press release today. The six deaths and at least 24 reported cases are among men who have sex with men, the CDC reports, but the disease can affect people of any race, gender, or sexual orientation. (The New York Times reports that the total number of deaths now tallies seven, with 26 total cases reported, though this was not confirmed in the CDC press release.) About half of the cases are among Hispanic men, the CDC reports.

Meningococcal disease is an illness caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis. According to the CDC, “[t]hese illnesses are often severe [and] can be deadly” and can manifest as meningitis (“infections of the lining of the brain and spinal cord”) or septicemia, an infection of the bloodstream. The effects can be serious. According to CDC data, “10 to 15 in 100 people with meningococcal disease will die,” and up to one in five will experience long-term disabilities, including loss of limb, deafness, and nervous system problems.

Meningococcal disease spreads through close and prolonged contact to an infected person’s saliva or spit, which can occur through activities like kissing or coughing. The CDC notes that the bacteria is “not as contagious as germs that cause the common cold or the flu,” and that people don’t catch the bacteria through casual contact, such as “breathing air where someone with meningococcal disease has been.”

      Meningococcal Disease Symptoms

According to the CDC, symptoms of meningococcal disease can appear suddenly. “Symptoms can first appear as a flu-like illness, but typically worsen very quickly,” the press release explains. Symptoms of meningococcal disease include:

      • High fever
      • Headache
      • Stiff neck
      • Nausea or vomiting
      • Dark purple rash
      • Sensitivity to light
      • Altered mental state, including confusion

      Meningococcal Disease Treatment and Prevention

Meningococcal disease can be treated with a number of antibiotics, and the CDC says it’s important to start treatment as soon as possible if you begin experiencing symptoms, as treatment with antibiotics can reduce the likelihood of death. Other treatment may include breathing support, medications to help low blood pressure, and surgery to remove dead tissue.

Meningococcal disease is also preventable with two vaccines: Meningococcal conjugate (MenACWY) and Serogroup B meningococcal (MenB). In light of the current outbreak, the CDC recommends that “gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men get a meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) if they live in Florida, or talk with their healthcare provider about getting vaccinated if they are traveling to Florida.” The organization also noted that people with HIV should get routine meningococcal vaccinations.

“Getting vaccinated against meningococcal disease is the best way to prevent this serious illness, which can quickly become deadly,” says José R. Romero, MD, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, in the CDC press release. You can get a meningococcal vaccine at a doctor’s office, pharmacy, community health center, or local health department, and the CDC notes that “[i]nsurance providers should pay for meningococcal vaccination for those whom it is recommended for during an outbreak.” During the ongoing outbreak in Florida, “anyone can get a MenACWY vaccine at no cost at any county health department.”

Taylor Swift’s ‘Carolina’ Lyrics Are Full of Chilling References to ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’

Taylor Swift has released “Carolina,” a new original song she penned for the upcoming film Where the Crawdads Sing. Produced by her Folklore collaborator Aaron Dessner of The National, the dark and eerie folk track echoes the mystery and drama of the highly anticipated book-to-screen adaptation.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Based on the bestselling novel by Delia Owens, Where the Crawdads Sing follows Kya, the “Marsh Girl” who’s survived alone in the marshes of North Carolina after being abandoned as a child. When a young man named Chase Andrews is found dead, she becomes a suspect for his presumed murder. Normal People and Fresh star Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Kya, while Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine produces and Olivia Newman (First Match) directs.

Swift references the premise through her song, especially in the last verse: “Oh Carolina knows / Why for years they’ve said / That I was guilty as sin / And sleep in a liar’s bed.” It seems like she did her homework; when the singer-songwriter teased “Carolina” along with the movie trailer earlier this year, she shared that she was hooked on Crawdads immediately.

“Where The Crawdads Sing is a book I got absolutely lost in when I read it years ago,” Swift wrote on Instagram. “As soon as I heard there was a film in the works starring the incredible @daisyedgarjones and produced by the brilliant @reesewitherspoon, I knew I wanted to be a part of it from the musical side. I wrote the song ‘Carolina’ alone and asked my friend @aarondessner to produce it. I wanted to create something haunting and ethereal to match this mesmerizing story.”

Edgar-Jones also loved the novel immediately. The actress previously told ELLE, “I read the book in a day and a half, and just fell so deeply in love with her and her world, and what the story was talking about, this idea of loneliness. She’s such a wonderfully complex character—there’s a load of stuff to delve really deep into.”

Swift was also recently linked to another book-to-screen adaptation, Amazon Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, based on Jenny Han’s YA novel of the same name. Swift shared a first glimpse at “This Love (Taylor’s Version)” in the trailer, then released the full track shortly after. Many of her songs are also included in the series, which is now streaming.

Read the full lyrics to “Carolina” below.

      Oh Carolina creeks
      Running through my veins
      Lost I was born
      Lonesome I came
      Lonesome I’ll always stay

      Carolina knows
      Why for years I roam
      Free as these birds
      Light as whispers
      Carolina knows

And you didn’t see me here
No, they never did see me here

      And she’s in my dreams
Into the mist, into the clouds
      Don’t leave
I make a fist, I make it count
And there are places I will never ever go
And things that only Carolina will ever know

      Carolina stains
      On the dress she left
      Indelible scars
      Pivotal marks
Blue as the life she fled

      Carolina pines
      Won’t you cover me?
      Hide me like robes
      Down the back road
      Muddy these webs we weave

And you didn’t see me here
No, they never did see me

      And she’s in my dreams
Into the mist, into the clouds
      Don’t leave
I make a fist, I make it count
And there are places I will never ever go
And things that only Carolina will ever know

And you didn’t see me here
They never did see me here
No you didn’t seem me here
      They never saw me

      Oh Carolina knows
      Why for years they’ve said
That I was guilty as sin
And sleep in a liar’s bed
      But the sleep comes fast
      And I’ll meet no ghosts
      It’s between me
      The sand and the sea
      Carolina knows

Crocs Are the New “It” Shoe

      Photography courtesy of Getty Images

It’s a success story for odd fashion everywhere.

A decade ago, most of us probably wouldn’t be caught dead in a pair of Crocs. Because the foam clogs have an unconventional design that some might call “ugly,” the shunned shoes were a walking joke for years. But after collaborating with designers like Balenciaga and celebrities like Justin Bieber, it would seem that Crocs is having the final laugh.

In the age of dopamine dressing, our appetite for maximalist, weird fashion has never been stronger. Crocs, with their strange, almost child-like designs, undeniably fit that bill. And the numbers speak for themselves; even when consumers were tightening their purse strings in 2020, Crocs grew its sales 12 per cent. But if 2020 marked the shoe’s return, 2022 will see its full-blown renaissance.

For starters, the brand has been busy building its roster of celebrity partnerships. Most recently, Crocs worked with singer Saweetie on the release of limited-edition pastel Jibbitz. Before that, the company partnered with SZA on a nature-themed line and produced a collection of trippy tie-dye designs with DJ Diplo. Other collaborations include Post Malone and Bad Bunny, and this year alone, the shoes have proven to be a red carpet staple, as seen on stars like Justin Bieber and DJ Questlove.

Crocs has even dipped its bulbous toe in high fashion. In recent years, the company has partnered with designers to introduce boundary-breaking creations. In 2021, luxury streetwear designer Salehe Bembury teamed up with the brand to completely reimagine the clog’s classic silhouette with a futuristic design. And Crocs’ going partnership with Balenciaga has been a case study in viral experimentation, entailing chunky platforms, pool slides, goth styles and clog stilettos.

Hungry for more? The label has even given us food collaborations with brands like Kentucky Fried Chicken, Lucky Charms and Hidden Valley Ranch. With each new unexpected partnership, Crocs is reborn again. But before the brand was marketing such unusual designs, it was sold as a modest, practical activewear shoe.

Founded in 2002 as boating footwear, the waterproof, lightweight design was about durability and wearability above all else. Meant to be a comfortable take on the traditional Danish clog, the brand’s resin material was unique at the time. It didn’t take long for the shoe to explode in popularity, and by the mid-2000s, Crocs were ubiquitous.

But its downfall came during the 2008 recession, when the company found itself near bankruptcy. It wasn’t until 2017, with Andrew Rees as its new CEO, that the brand began to reposition itself: marketing Crocs as not just functional, but fashionable. That year, designer Christopher Kane sent furry Crocs down the runway. Of course, it was met with contentious reactions from the fashion world. At the time, Kane called it “the most controversial collaboration” he had ever done.

Today, Crocs are known for their imaginative Jibbitz (shoe charms) and wacky colour palettes. This means they clash with most outfits, and that’s kind of the point. From the return of the Moon Boot to Versace’s viral platform pumps, peculiar footwear is having a moment. But nothing is on the rise quite like Crocs, which forecasts US$5 billion in sales by 2026.

Despite its boost in popularity, Crocs remain one of the most contentious shoes of all time: from dedicated hate sites and Reddit forums to celebs like Dua Lipa and Zoë Kravitz openly voicing their disdain. Even still, 20 years after its inception, Crocs are back whether we like it or not.
