Planned Parenthood Is Suing to Block Florida’s Restrictive 15-Week Abortion Ban

Santa Ana, CA - May 14: Many of the thousands of people attending the Bans Off Abortion rally carried signs for women's rights at Centennial Park in Santa Ana on Saturday, May 14, 2022. (Photo by Mark Rightmire/MediaNews Group/Orange County Register via Getty Images)
In today’s news of state-enforced abortion bans, we have an update. Earlier today, Planned Parenthood announced that it would be suing to block Florida’s restrictive abortion ban from taking effect on July 1.

In case you missed it, days after Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signed a bill banning abortion after 15 weeks, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida followed suit. On April 15, Governor DeSantis signed a bill that would also ban most abortions after 15 weeks — the exceptions being if the abortion is necessary to save a mother’s life, prevent serious injury to the mother, or if the fetus has a fatal abnormality, per NPR. This ban was supposed to go into effect on July 1, but the Planned Parenthood lawsuit may change that.

“We’re suing to block Florida’s 15-week abortion ban from taking effect on July 1. Not only does it violate the state’s constitution, but it will force Floridians to remain pregnant against their will, violating their dignity and bodily autonomy. We will never stop fighting to get our patients the care they need,” Planned Parenthood wrote in an Instagram post.

In the caption, the organization clarified “Abortion is still legal in Florida. If you need an abortion, call 1-800-230-PLAN or visit AbortionFinder.org to make an appointment.”

In light of the recent news that the Supreme Court will likely overturn Roe v. Wade, activists say it is crucial to emphasize that abortion is still legal — not necessarily to create a sense of false hope, but so people know they can still seek abortions right now if they need.

Lupe M. Rodríguez, executive director at the National Latina Institute For Reproductive Justice (also called the Latina Institute), previously told POPSUGAR, “We think it’s really, really important for folks to know that this is not a final decision,” she says. “While there’s a strong signal that the Supreme Court will overturn Roe v. Wade, it hasn’t done so yet, and we need folks to continue to . . . go and get the care they need and to know that they can do so legally.”

In the meantime, Planned Parenthood is determined to fight back. The president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund Alexis McGill Johnson wrote in a Tweet: “No one should be forced to travel hundreds, let alone thousands of miles for essential health care — but this abortion ban would do just that. @PPFA pledges to stand with patients and fight this ban until all people can get the care they deserve. Florida, we’ll see you in court.”

What Top Gun: Maverick’s Monica Barbaro Learned From Working With Real Women in Aviation

The first time Monica Barbaro watched Top Gun, she was in San Diego with a couple of “very bro-y dudes,” she recalls. “What do you mean you haven’t seen Top Gun?” they asked her when she wasn’t understanding their references to Miramar, the Marine Corps Air Station in which the film is set. “I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’”

Naturally, the group eased her confusion by watching the cult 1986 aviation flick, starring Tom Cruise in one of his most famous roles. And college-aged Barbaro, a trained dancer who was deciding whether to make the transition into acting at the time, was impressed. “I remember watching it and being like, ‘Oh man, it’d be cool to do something like that.’” But she wasn’t sure it was possible. “I just never really even put myself in it, because I never thought that there would be that space for me as a pilot.”

And yet, years later, she’s doing exactly that, as she stars in the film’s long-awaited sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, which finally opened this past weekend after two years of pandemic-related delays. She plays Natasha “Phoenix” Trace, a driven young pilot in the newest class of Top Gun recruits, all training for a dangerous mission under the guidance of daredevil Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise). Like Barbaro, Phoenix also finds herself among the bros in this male-dominated course, which, unsurprisingly, isn’t too different from real life. (Women make up about 21 percent of the Air Force and about 20 percent of the Navy, which houses Top Gun.) But she’s treated as an equal, not just a potential love interest, as she plays pool and beach volleyball with the crew, trades snide remarks, and competes for success like the rest of guys. She’s only one of a couple female pilots in Maverick, but that’s more than the original, which essentially had none. Barbaro, and members of the aviation community, hope this film can at least inspire more women to become pilots.

For Maverick’s 10-month shoot, which wrapped three years ago this month, art imitated life behind the scenes, as Cruise led his younger co-stars through a rigorous training program. The syllabus included flying in various planes and even underwater training (in case they had to eject from their aircrafts into water). But unlike Maverick and his students, this group got along swimmingly. “I think we were all pretty gung-ho and ready to do it,” Barbaro says. She and her fellow actors—including Miles Teller, Jay Ellis, Glen Powell, Danny Ramirez, and Lewis Pullman—grew closer because of it. “We formed some really intense bonds, because no one in our world was going through what we were going through.”

And all those flight scenes? They were real. “There were no simulators. We were in planes doing them.” Perhaps a few close-ups of someone flicking controls on the dashboard weren’t airborne, Barbaro clarifies, “But all of the flying that you see is in the air.” Of course, those speedy takeoffs, sharp turns, dips, and spins took some getting used to—for the actors and their stomachs. “I was very lucky to have not thrown up,” she laughs.

Barbaro, whose acting credits include The Good Cop, UnREAL, and Chicago P.D., will later star in an upcoming Netflix series with Arnold Schwarzenegger, though she never thought she’d become an action star. Turns out, she’s not even an adrenaline junkie, even if she plays one well on screen. If anything, she saw herself doing period pieces, after growing up watching British dramas and BBC Jane Austen specials. “I like being an actor because I get to change it up,” she says, leaving the door open for a potential period drama in the future. “That is what I love about this—that I get to totally steer in different directions.”

Her love for acting and film was fostered by her favorite titles growing up, like Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion, Galaxy Quest, Charade, and Amélie. Alfonso Cuaron’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban also opened her eyes to (literal) movie magic. “I would love to escape life day in and day out and get to pretend to be in entirely different worlds for a living,’” she remembers thinking. With a growing resume like hers, who says she can’t?

Here, Barbaro talks Maverick, the women who took her under their wing, and having mentors like Cruise and Schwarzenegger.

What was your initial reaction to landing a part in Maverick?

I was super stoked because of the fact that I got to play a pilot. I told my mom immediately, and that my part in this classic action movie was not going to be that of a love interest; although, I will say, I think Jennifer Connelly is incredible in this, and I think she is strong, stands alone, is great at sailing, runs her own business. She’s the coolest. So I think every woman in this was in good hands, but it was cool to just be able to be a character whose purpose in each scene had to do with the other characters and had to do with the trajectory of the plot, not necessarily, just be a component to fall in love with or not. Her presence is just as valid as everyone else’s. Again, as is Jennifer Connelly’s.

The movie shows both sides.

Yeah, having one woman represent that for a character in the film, and then one woman representing being a co-worker and a fellow pilot and someone to be trusted and responsible.

Though the original movie is iconic, it’s very much a boys’ club, and that changes a little bit in the sequel.

Yeah. And I mean, the Kelly McGillis character [Charlie, Maverick’s instructor and love interest in Top Gun] was also smart and knew what she was talking about and went toe to toe with Maverick. But I think it just was a really different time. And I think they did a great job of maintaining genre and still updating it so that there was more diversity across the board, which was incredible.

It’s hard, because there’s also a lot of pressure with it. I’m sure there are still people out there who think women shouldn’t be flying these planes, and then you meet incredible women who are flying these planes, and you want to do them the honor of representing them in a way that showcases them to the best of your ability, because they are so incredible and they deserve the best representation possible. Some of them grew up having seen this movie, wanting to be fighter pilots sometimes because of it, despite the fact that there was no representation of them in this film. I have heard from people that are hoping [Top Gun: Maverick] helps more women realize that they can be pilots, even if they are commercial pilots or have their own license, or whatever that may mean, because I think we only make up nine percent of the aviation community, even though we’re half the population. I would hope it’s inspiring, but we’ll see.

Did you talk to any real-life women pilots or women in the community to prepare for the role?

I flew with them in the booth. I think there were maybe one or two flights where I flew with a guy. Pretty much all of the footage of me in the film up in the air, is being flown and piloted by [women]… And same with Lewis [Pullman, who plays Robert “Bob” Floyd] actually, because he plays my backseater. So, anything that was over the shoulder was of someone who looked like Phoenix from the back.

Lewis and I flew with two women in particular who I’m just a huge fan of. They came to the premiere with me last week, and it was just so exciting to have them there. That was the nice thing about seeing it three times—having them there, I was like, “Oh yeah, when we were flying in the snow, that was with Bacon and then that low-level flight was with Dragon”—those are their call signs. It was just fun. They were definite role models for me, and for the character for sure. And I got to talk to a lot of female aviators on the ground too.

What did you learn from them?

I think the main lesson that came out of me inquiring what it was like to be in a male-dominated field was that, I think they strive to get to a place where their gender is not what the commentary is about, because even I saw, just in the tiniest ways, as soon as I booked this, it was like, “Monica Barbaro will play a female pilot.” Like, well, no shit, I am a female. I’m not playing a female just as much as Glen Powell is not playing a male. You say he’s playing a pilot, so won’t you say the same for me?

And that was the energy, I think, behind what they were saying. They work really hard. Sometimes, they have to work twice as hard to prove themselves in these spaces. And then, ultimately, when it comes to being asked questions, it becomes more about the fact that they are female than about the fact that they are pilots. And yet, I think it was really important to them to have this character [Phoenix] be represented in a very specific way, that she’d be strong and competent at the very least, and just one of the guys that she flies with.

“I’m not playing a female just as much as Glen Powell is not playing a male. You say he’s playing a pilot, so won’t you say the same for me?”

The training program looked so intense. Can you fly a plane at this point? What were all the skills you were able to develop?

I mean, I was more scared for the water portion than I was for the flying. I did a lot of my own [stunts], holding my breath underwater and doing laps and strengthening as a swimmer, just so I would be comfortable. I think that taught me about my ability to get past fear in a really interesting way. I think I overcame things—that was really great.

In terms of the flying, I was just having a blast. I am halfway through ground school in becoming a pilot. I have taken this very slowly. I need to get back into it, but a project will come up and I dive into that. But I mean, I love it. We did learn how to start up a plane, take off, land, do all that. I mean, I wouldn’t trust myself in most emergency situations right now. I like to say in an apocalypse, if a plane had fuel in it, I would essentially know what to do to get out of a bad situation. But no, I definitely need some training to get back in and fly on my own. We did 40 hours of flights and we flew in several aircrafts. We’re all aviation nerds now. If I get to check out a cockpit, I take videos and send them to the other guys, because it’s just fun.

Tom Cruise starred and also lead you through training. What was it like seeing him in action?

I mean, that was incredible. That was the most interesting thing I think about all of this, is that we got to watch him operate at the level that he always does. His expectations of everyone around him are through the roof, as they should be, because everyone is able to show up and do incredible things with that belief and trust in them. The way he designed this program for us, I think was based on having experiences where he has ramped up his stunts to an incredible degree and didn’t necessarily have the opportunity to do things the way he did for this on the first one.

And I think he saw that as a bit of a loss, and something that he really wanted to be able to achieve on the sequel was to do all of the stunts for real. And he very well could have put himself in a plane and then had us all on green screens on the ground. But he didn’t, he took us along and fought really hard to give us the opportunity to get to do things the way he does them, and that was awesome.

Looking ahead to your other projects, you have a Netflix series with Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is also a huge blockbuster action star. Is there anything you can tell us about that?

It’s all very much under wraps because we’re filming right now. But it is super fun, and I’m really glad I’ve had this stunt experience in Top Gun to bring with me here, just to validate the expectation that you rehearse something a lot in order to get it right, to do on the day. That’s definitely the mentality of dance. … Last week, I was talking to Tom about [a] scene and asking him some questions and he was like, “Oh yeah, here’s what I know about things like that.” We can always reach out to him, which is incredible. And now I’m excited to use Arnold as a resource, because he’s obviously done so many things and he’s already done this action-comedy space, which is really specific and more of what we’re going forward with in the show. It’s supposed to be fun. I’m just excited to see it.

The two of them work so differently in their own ways and are great in their own right. It’s just really fun to get to see people you’ve been watching for so many years—to not only meet them, but to get to work with them and see what makes them tick and see how they operate.

The One Beauty Treatment That Makes Hilarie Burton Feel Like a Boss

Self-care is meant to be soothing and feel good, but sometimes the act does exactly the opposite. Scheduling time to unwind and pamper yourself can feel stressful, especially on already busy days. Actress Hilarie Burton, who also goes by author, host, producer, farmer, business owner, and mom of two, has been there. “If we’re not doing all the proper steps and using the right lotions and potions, we feel like we’re failing,” she says. “That’s why a low-maintenance routine is the best kind of self-care for me. I want to make things easier for myself, not more complicated.”

One way Hilarie avoids making self-care feel like yet another addition to an unending to-do list, is having standing monthly leg wax appointments at European Wax Center.

“I have to be able to go from working on my farm and doing chores around the house to looking polished in a dress on set at what feels like a moment’s notice,” she says. “Making that super-quick transition used to give me a lot of anxiety.” Taking some of the prep work for her life behind the cameras off of her plate has been a welcome relief. “I don’t have to think about whether or not my legs are hairy, or if I have ingrown hairs or razor burn,” she says. “Doing my monthly maintenance with EWC is a really quick process that sets me up for success for the next 30 days. It’s my rhythm now.”

The beauty treatment also helps Hilarie feel more in control, even when she’s balancing taking care of her family, recording an episode of her podcast, and getting her hands dirty on the farm.

“By delegating some rituals to someone else, it’s actually a way of empowering myself to be the boss of my own life,” she says. “And by doing it on a regular basis, I free up time to do the things I really love.” For Hilarie, that means watching movies with her family, planting vegetables in her garden, and cooking healthy meals. “Because I don’t spend time shaving my legs every day, I have more time to read with my kids or take another business call.”

While Hilarie may not subscribe to a complicated multi-step beauty regimen, she does have one important ritual. “I’m a big lotion person,” she says. “We need to preserve our skin.” Hilarie uses EWC Shea Body Butter after her shower every night. “It feels amazing and is a tiny way of spoiling myself.”

Will Influencer Culture Ever Die?

Emma Chamberlain. Photography courtesy of Getty Images

As new platforms emerge, the world of influencing continues to mutate.

On a recent episode of her podcast, Anything Goes, YouTuber turned fashion influencer Emma Chamberlain predicted a “cultural shift” in the realm of internet fame. Her argument: because everyone is trying to be an influencer, the industry has become less exclusive and, in turn, less credible. But was it ever credible to begin with?

The idea that a person of influence could be used to sell us something is not new. Back in the 18th century, royalty would endorse all sorts of products peddled to the masses. Today, the closest comparison to that might be the Kardashian-Jenners. But to be an “influencer,” meaning someone who built their audience from the ground up on social media, is a different beast entirely.

In the 2010s, YouTube beauty gurus were inking more lucrative brand deals than they probably knew what to do with. They became celebrities in their own right, and put their luxurious lifestyles on full display. Over the years, the community became saturated and, thanks to 2018’s “dramageddon,” not really even about beauty anymore, but about the fraught friendships between the creators themselves.

Around that time, the rules around how influencers could advertise to their audience on social media was changing, and Instagram was becoming the platform of choice for social media stars and brands. The core of being an influencer was the same, but on the surface, it looked much different. It was less about the drama and more about selling a picture-perfect lifestyle. But that all came crashing down when the pandemic shattered this illusion. Enter TikTok.

For Chamberlain, who rose to fame during the YouTube era before moving to TikTok and subsequently deleting her account, anxiety around the future of the influencer industry makes sense.

On the bite-sized video sharing app, it’s charismatic casualness that attracts audiences. There are millions of views on TikTok videos that offer tips to achieve virality and build an audience — the idea being that anybody who wants to be an influencer can be one. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Some have argued that saturation means more opportunities for small, marginalized creators to get a piece of the influencer pie. The growth of influencers has created opportunities for people outside the traditional archetype of a thin, white, wealthy woman and allowed micro-influencers (ranging between 10,000 and 50,000 followers) to emerge as valid content creators.

And as far as the content itself is concerned, it’s becoming easier to make. The rising “comfort influencer” creates casual TikTok content at home and does mundane things like cleaning, preparing food or talking about their day. These types of influencers, like Emily Mariko and Kirsten Titus, feel like friends as opposed to celebrities (like YouTube beauty gurus).

But once we see them doing traditional influencer things, like going on sponsored brand trips or posting promotional content, the internet is swift to condemn and just as quick to forget. In the age of the influencer, nothing is permanent — and brands count on this. Studies suggest influencer marketing is more effective than traditional media in impacting purchasing decisions.

The rise of the internet micro-influencer has allowed the content creation industry to grow and democratize, with more space for diverse creators and growing transparency around issues like pay gaps. But the lifecycle of an influencer is notoriously unstable. Today, it’s ruled by TikTok. But if history is any indication, creators and brands will inevitably jump ship to another platform, and we, the audience, will join them. What will influencer culture look like then? We’ll have to wait and see.

What to look for in deodorant for balls

Now that you’ve had a good look at our rundown of the best deodorant for balls, it’s time to cement your decision with our three things to look for in a scrotal sanitizing elixir.

Ingredients

As such a delicate (and prized) area, ingredients are essential when choosing a deodorant for your balls.

The general rule of thumb here is: don’t buy any product that contains aluminum, talc or paraben, and go for deodorants made from at least largely natural ingredients.

The more natural the deodorant is, the kinder it will be to your balls. So, read through the ingredients list carefully before hitting the buy button.

Sweat Control

When you’re looking to make that big final decision for your balls, it’s important to consider how much you perspire in your genital area.

If you’re active or you sweat more than your average gent, opting for something that specializes more in sweat control is advisable. Generally, natural powders or lotions are good for drying the balls without causing irritation.

Scent

If you’re going to commit to a deodorant for your balls, opting for a scent you like (or your partner likes) is a big deal breaker.

You may want something subtle and fragrance-free, but if you’d like something a little more flamboyant in the smell department, check the label as well as the ingredients beforehand. There are so many wonderful scents out there on the market these days—and we’d say the more natural ones are the best, especially after you’ve shaved your balls.

FAQ

    • The reason regular deodorant burns your balls is chiefly to the odor neutralizing chemicals and ingredients they contain. Strong synthetic aromas and harsh ingredients like alcohol can prove incredibly irritating to the scrotum, especially as ball skin is sensitive, deicer, and produces sebum.

This concoction of chemicals can dry out the skin and cause the kind of irritation that creates unpleasant burning sensation. As such, opting for a dedicated ball deodorant is the best option if you’re looking for ways to improve your scrotal hygiene.

      • Essentially, guys use deodorant on their balls for three main reasons: comfort, hygiene, and odor management. As a warm, delicate, and ‘stowed away’ part of the male anatomy, the scrotum (the sack that houses the testicles) can get extremely sweaty, becoming sore and uncomfortable.

Men who are athletic, have physical jobs or have to wear suits to work (in warm weather) are subject to sweating and chaffing, so use dedicated ball deodorants to help keep the area dry, comfortable, fresh, and hygienic throughout the day or evening.

        • If you put regular deodorant on your balls (aerosol or roll-on products primarily meant for underarm use), you’re more than likely to experience irritation. This irritation can lead to a light burning sensation, dryness, itchiness or general discomfort.

Rather than using traditional underarm products on your balls, you should wash them everyday with soap and water before gently patting them dry with a towel. Using dedicated ball deodorants is also a good idea if you’re looking for extra comfort and protection.

Sadie Sink Is Managing Her Imposter Syndrome 1 Day at a Time

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 28: Sadie Sink attends the premiere of Netflix's

Since making her “Stranger Things” debut in 2017, Sadie Sink has delivered some of the series’ most impassioned performances, most recently stunning fans with her acting prowess in season four‘s “Dear Billy” episode. A powerhouse in her field, Sink — who has been acting since 2011 — has performed with the likes of Helen Mirren on Broadway, Brie Larson on screen, and even Taylor Swift in her “All Too Well” music video. She’s also been nominated for an MTV Movie & TV Award for Most Frightened Performance in her role as Ziggy Berman in “Fear Street: Part Two 1978.” Accolades and acting credits aside, the 20-year-old still faces everyday insecurities like self-doubt and imposter syndrome, something her character Max Mayfield has helped her slowly overcome.

“Growing up in this industry, you always kind of compare yourself to others,” Sink tells Glamour in a recent cover story. “That’s when you start doubting your abilities and those were my biggest insecurities, particularly in terms of coming into my own as an actor. As you get more experience, it becomes less about the competition and thinking ‘Oh my God, am I good enough?’ and more about finding yourself and drowning out the noise that comes with being in this industry.”

“There are a lot of issues that come with being a young woman in today’s society, but I like to focus on what’s real.”

In addition to the pressures of being a young actor in the entertainment industry, Sink has also been forced to confront the unrealistic beauty standards placed on young women in the spotlight. “It’s impossible not to worry about those things,” she says of the unhealthy expectations. “There are a lot of issues that come with being a young woman in today’s society, but I like to focus on what’s real. My friends and the people in my circle, that’s what I pay attention to rather than likes on pictures or what other people are posting or wearing and what they think I should be wearing, be it clothes or makeup.”

With so many factors working against her, Sink’s self-confidence journey remains a work in progress, but she’s already figured out one key way to take control. While other stars her age make social media a priority — incorporating different platforms into their brand — Sink sets healthy boundaries for herself by actively avoiding social media, a purposeful decision that allows her to navigate away from toxic internet culture and comments from trolls. “I don’t have the Instagram app or any social media apps on my phone,” she says. “I’ll download it sometimes to check in, but I don’t really like to associate with any of the negative things on social media. It took me a while to realize that social media probably isn’t the best place for me, but now I really don’t indulge in it much.”

“For me, playing Max, who is such an outspoken and bold character has really helped build my own confidence up.”

When it comes to dealing with the pressures of such a fast-paced, capricious industry, Sink makes a point of prioritizing her mental health, taking on each new challenge one day at a time. “Self-belief is obviously such an important thing and people preach about it all the time, but it’s a lot harder in practice,” she says. “Confidence is something that always goes up and down. There are times when you’re feeling really confident and other times where you’re a little more insecure. For me, playing Max, who is such an outspoken and bold character has really helped build my own confidence up. Throughout middle school and high school, I don’t think there was ever a moment where I wasn’t doubting myself or feeling insecure and just trying to find myself. You really have to get past those teenage years before you get there.”

Sometimes the pressure can still be overwhelming, which is when Sink gives herself permission to step back and recharge. Despite the difficulties associated with such an exacting career, acting overwhelmingly remains one of her biggest self-confidence boosters. “Being on set is when I feel the most empowered,” she says. “Doing what I have loved since I was six years old is where I feel my best.”

I Wish I Had The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School as a Teen

When 16-year-old Yamilet came out, she lost her best friend and entire social circle. Hoping to start over, she decides to play the role of a super-straight girl in her new environment: a Catholic high school.

Sonora Reyes’ The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School follows Yamilet’s struggles to keep her queerness under wraps, especially when she meets her new crush, a girl named Bo who isn’t afraid to wear rainbow attire and speak out against homophobic teachers. The young adult novel weaves a story of teenage romance with discussions around first-generation pressures, migration, mental health, and growing pains.

Growing up, I didn’t know any stories about queer girls, especially Brown girls. Like Yamilet, I attended a Catholic high school (mine was all-girls while hers is co-ed) where we were required to wear a uniform. On the days we attended mass, which took place in the school’s gym, we had to wear a thicker, more formal skirt and a burgundy blazer. Even though I wore the uniform just like everyone else, I felt immensely out of place, because in those years, I realized I identified as bisexual. Reyes’ novel, then, immediately caught my attention.

Tasked with looking out for her brother, who often got into fights at his old school, Yamilet navigates a new social sphere. She develops a crush on Bo, who challenges the school leaders’ bigoted statements. At one point, a teacher has students practice their debate skills, focusing on whether gay marriage should be legal. Bo makes a point that it’s already legal, before storming out of class; Yamilet, who’s assigned to the opposing group, runs to the bathroom to cry after hearing her classmates argue about why gay people shouldn’t get married. In another scene, Bo speaks up during mass, asking the priest why being queer is sinful, especially when gay marriage is legal; the priest responds that while that might be the case, it’s still wrong in the view of Catholicism.

It takes effort to hide your true identity, and even more energy to stand firm about who you are in a room full of people who don’t consider you worthy. The homophobia Yamilet and her brother Cesar grow up around seeps its way in. While Yamilet doesn’t fully come out at her new school, she silently rages against others’ beliefs. She feels constantly judged by the Catholic community around her, furious that it won’t accept her full, queer self. And when Cesar comes out as bisexual, she’s angry when she realizes this was the root of the “fights” he got into at school.

Yet in some moments (like the debate scene), it’s hard for Yamilet to maintain a strong sense of self. Cesar takes the religious teachings around him to heart, feeling a deep shame about his identity. The two repeatedly search for ways to feel at home in their own skin.

Same-sex marriage wasn’t yet legal during my high school years, though there was definitely talk about it. When I realized I’d fallen for my classmate Nancy*, I didn’t initially think about what it might mean for us to be together in a small, Catholic school. Queerness was seen as wrong and strange, and that judgment hung over us like a quiet fog.

For years, I told myself that because my coming out story didn’t result in physical violence, I shouldn’t overtly publicize my experience. The micro-aggressions, many of which I pushed down, didn’t seem worthy of bringing up, especially as an adult in a straight-passing relationship with a cis man. Even though I believed I didn’t deserve to talk about it, my high school years did wear me down. I can’t remember why, but Nancy often joked that the principal didn’t like us. I was jumpy, forever trying to hide any affection between us. I walked down the hallways knowing that the majority of the students and the adults marked me as an anomaly, as someone unwanted.

“I can’t imagine what it would’ve meant to read Reyes’ novel as a teenager, to hear someone put into words the guilt and fear I felt.”

In writing Yamilet, Reyes gives us insight into a character trying to figure out her own place at school, in religious circles and, ultimately, in the world. Yamilet is still hurting from the way her best friend, Bianca, cuts her off after finding out about her queerness. I know what that feels like; Nancy told me that girls she previously called friends stopped talking to her when they found out we were dating. And I vaguely remember someone saying that if I hugged them for too long, I might develop a crush on them. I kept turning that comment over and over in my head, until I got down to the core of why it hurt so much—being queer was equated to being othered or an outsider; not a friend or acquaintance, but someone to be avoided.

Yamilet explains it perfectly in the novel: “When I told her I loved her, she made me feel like a leech, like I took advantage of her by being her friend. Like it was only for my benefit,” she says. “It didn’t matter to her that I wasn’t ready to come out until then. The years we spent as best friends didn’t matter because I must have had ulterior motives, and everything I had done now seemed creepy.” I can’t imagine what it would’ve meant to read Reyes’ novel as a teenager, to hear someone put into words the guilt and fear I felt.

Now, as an adult, I’m trying to wrap my head around the idea that books like these are being banned in schools. PEN America reported earlier this year that 33 percent of the books “banned in 86 school districts in 26 states” from July 21 of last year to March 31 of this year “explicitly address LGBTQ themes, or have LGBTQ protagonists or prominent secondary characters.” Approximately 1,145 titles have been banned. The report also states that 41 percent of these books “included protagonists or prominent secondary characters who were people of color.” Reyes’ literary agent tweeted just a few days after the release of The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School that it was already receiving hate. How can a Brown queer girl or Brown non-binary teen see themselves today when these stories are being censored?

Nancy and I broke up and got back together multiple times, mostly when I got too afraid and anxious about the disapproval of the people around me. Our relationship was flawed and we rebelled against our parents sometimes. But it was a kind and loving partnership, even at such a young age. We talked about our nieces and nephews, wished each other luck on homework and tests and competitions. We talked about grief. We exchanged inside jokes and sappy messages on Facebook. I sent her good vibes before band practices. She modeled what true commitment and passion to a creative practice could look like.

“How can a Brown queer girl or Brown non-binary teen see themselves today when these stories are being censored?”

It’s heartbreaking, at times, to think about how my teenage self cast this as a shameful relationship. I didn’t have any queer couples to look to; instead, I repeatedly heard religious and personal declarations about how “wrong” it was to be queer.

The shame lingered for years; in college, a friend invited me to visit her hometown during one of our breaks from school. As the date approached, we excitedly made plans and discussed the details. She told me I could just sleep in her bed with her, that there was plenty of room. I hesitated when she told me and came out to her as bi.

“That doesn’t change how I feel about you as a friend at all,” she said. “That doesn’t change anything.”

It was a small gift.

Nancy and I kept in touch after we broke up and I started at a new college. She patiently read my messages about my relationship problems. I confessed that I was too afraid to date women. Dating guys, I told her, was just easier. Not giving myself the space to explore my full self, in the way that Yamilet does, was safer.

In my late twenties, I embraced my queerness more fully and I got louder about it. I felt unapologetic about so many things in life—my decision to live with a partner without marrying first, my multiple tattoos—except for that. In earlier years, I felt like a fraud if I brought up being bi. But as oppressive policies continue to be passed—like a certain bill that prohibits teachers from speaking about gender identity or sexual orientation—it feels wrong to be quiet about it.

The final scenes of Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School feel bittersweet because I know not every queer kid gets that type of happy ending. It’s not that Yamilet’s life will never feel difficult again—by the end of the novel, she’s not speaking to her father. But her mom surprises her and Cesar one day with rainbow papel picado and pan dulce.

At an anti-prom party, Yamilet and Bo dance until they fall onto the lawn, and as she settles into the grass with Bo beside her, Yamilet finally lets go. “No more second-guessing. No more double life,” she tells us. I didn’t feel so brave at Yamilet’s age, but in reading Reyes’ writing, I gave my teenage self a little more grace.

To add to her list of booming businesses, Kim Kardashian is entering the skincare game with her newest brand SKNN BY KIM. Gossip Girl Star Evan Mock on His New Label Wahine and Why Blair Waldorf Has the Best Style

white house correspondents dinner 2022

CBS Photo ArchiveGetty Images

Evan Mock stays booked and busy, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. The pro skater first started gaining attention within fashion circles a few years back, when he began walking in runway shows and starring in ad campaigns. His fluorescent buzzcut and those cheekbones made him an instant It boy, and he quickly garnered a cult following—inspiring many to buzz their head and dye it bright pink, as well as pick up on his style aesthetic, which is decidedly skater-cool and comprised of Hawaiian duds he describes as both “minimal” and “uber-casual.” He’s designed in collaboration with several brands in the past, including RCVA and Giuseppe Zanotti, and released a streetwear brand called Sorry In Advance. His new brand, Wahine (Hawaiian for “woman”), is the first high-end design endeavor founded by Mock.

Between filming the new season of Gossip Girl and skating around the world, Mock designed the collection alongside New York-based stylist and creative Donte McGuire, creating a capsule of unisex wares that delivers on the Hawaiian promise of casual cool. Wahine hones in on the traditional surf and skatewear style that is specific to Hawaii, being the laid-back island state that it is, and honors Hawaiian people, especially the women. Expect to find tight-fitting rashguards, boxy workwear pants, easy tees, and a striped button-down that suggestively states “MY BOYFRIEND IS OUT OF TOWN.” The humor and color palette speak to Mock’s creative vision, one that calls upon Hawaiian tradition while also bringing a global flair and taste—and maybe a little bit of that Upper East Side influence, too.

Below, ELLE.com caught up with Mock while he was riding waves in Jamaica to discuss his favorite designers, summer travel plans, and why he launched Wahine.

What sort of style did you grow up seeing in Hawaii?

Board shorts, no shoes, no shirt, surfboard, riding in a back of truck, heading to the beach—very minimal.

How was working with Donte on this collection? Was it important to have another person working on this with you?

Yes, [and] it was great working with Donte. I definitely can’t do it alone, and he gets things done, so it’s nice to be able to count on someone who can get the job done. I think it’s a learning experience for both of us, and we’re willing to learn.

Who are some of your favorite designers?

Pierpaolo [Piccioli], Kim Jones, Eli from ERL, Matthew Williams, and T-Rex Global from Atlanta.

Who from the OG cast of Gossip Girl has the best style?

For me, it would probably have to be Blair Waldorf.

If you could tell everyone one thing about Hawaii they don’t know, what would it be?

Don’t mistake “aloha” for weakness.

What’s one thing you’re really looking forward to this summer?

Hopefully having a European summer [and] going somewhere new I’ve never been before, or all of the above.

How do you get dressed everyday? Is there a formula you follow?

I don’t necessarily have a formula; I think it’s kind of just whatever I’m feeling. I can’t really script it. It’s just a feeling when I open my closet.

wahine evan mock

What do you hope people take away from this collection?

I feel like people should keep an open mind and hopefully just continue to grow their fashion sense and continue to grow their style, whatever that may be. Whether it’s with Wahine, or with any another brand, I feel like it’s something much needed to keep things fresh, to keep things fun. We’re very much here to keep things fun, functionable, and fresh.

A Verdict for the Depp v Heard Trial Has Been Reached

Photography courtesy of Getty Images

Questions around the cultural ramifications of the decision remain.

More than three million people tuned into the Law&Crime Network’s live stream of the verdict for the high-profile defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, Depp v Heard. And it’s swung in Depp’s favour to the tune of $15 million (all figures USD).

The jury awarded Heard $2 million in compensatory damages for her counterclaim.

Johnny Depp sued Amber Heard for $50 million for defamation over an essay she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018, where she discussed being a victim of abuse, without mentioning Depp’s name. Prior to this, Heard received a restraining order against Depp after accusing him of domestic violence when she filed for divorce in 2016 (they were married in 2015).

The court case, part of a longstanding legal battle between the ex-spouses, has morphed into a cesspit of internet chaos in recent weeks. And while the announcement of the verdict for Depp v Heard will hopefully bring the mayhem to a close, questions around the ramifications for MeToo and the influence of social media on the case remain.

Depp was not present at the reading of the verdict.

This is a developing story. More to come.

12 Of The Best Long-Lasting Colognes To Keep You Smelling Good All Of 2022

An afternoon date that unexpectedly segues into an evening date. That fateful, eternal first day of a marathon bachelor party. Fridays at the office that have never not ended in happy hour with the office.

You never know when the need for an irresistible long-lasting cologne will arise. And you never know how long you’ll need it to last. The best cologne is present enough to be noticed, yet covert enough to sink into the background in the best way possible. But how do you know which scents are worthy of your inner wrist’s valuable real estate and which ones should be gone with the wind?

Man holding long-lasting cologne
@hsh_91 / Instagram

We’re here to help you sniff out the winners from the losers with our guide to the best long-lasting colognes for men.

Our Top Picks

The Best Long-Lasting Cologne

If you’re looking for a scent that will stick with you from your morning coffee right on through a nightcap, then you’re looking for Creed Aventus. Its rich and earthy middle and base notes are complemented by light, subtle hints of fruit on the front end.

It’s the Swiss Army Knife of colognes, making itself at home at almost any occasion, from the office to date night. There’s a reason this fragrance tends to pop up in almost every conversation about the best long-lasting cologne.

Top Notes: Pineapple, bergamot, blackcurrant leaves, apple | Middle Notes: Birch, pink berries, patchouli, jasmine | Base Notes: Ambergris, sandalwood, oakmoss, vanilla

You’re at the beach. Or the pool. Or in a hammock. You get it… you’re putting on a leisure clinic somewhere beautiful and want to smell your best. Problem: It’s hot and you’re sweating. Solution: Spritz a bit of Byredo Sundazed on in the morning and let it work its magic all day and into the night.

This long-lasting cologne has all your expected notes, from citrus scents like lemon and mandarin to refreshing florals like neroli and jasmine. Pair Sundazed with a bathing suit and white linen shirt and you’ll definitely be doing it right.

Top Notes: Lemon, mandarin | Middle Notes: Neroli, jasmine sambac | Base Notes: Musks

Up your seduction game with this masculine long-lasting cologne that’s both willing and able to do a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to your date nights. With notes of cedar, oakmoss, woods, and tanned leather, Grand Tour exudes as much confidence as the man wearing it.

Not to be left out, its top notes of citrus fruits and aromatic herbs keep things from straying too far into lumberjack territory. And this long-lasting cologne, of course, lasts a long time. So if you’ve got a date right after work, don’t stress about reapplying — a spritz or two in the morning will do just fine.

Top Notes: Aromatic herbs, citrus fruits | Middle Notes: Sweet basil, cedar | Base Notes: Woods, tanned leather, oakmoss

This long-lasting cologne has been on the circuit for many years thanks — in part — to its approachable price point and strong signature scent. The hearty clove bud oil, tree moss and pepper notes make it a perfect match for sipping hot toddies by a roaring fire after a day on the slopes.

And it’s got some serious lasting power thanks to those standout notes. Anyone lucky enough to cross your path while wearing this cologne will be there with you in your winter wonderland. Too dramatic? We don’t think so.

Top Notes: Bergamot oil, clary sage oil, myrtle oil, pepper | Middle Notes: Clove bud oil, patchouli | Base Notes: Sandalwood, vetiver, tree moss

Thought to be originally produced in 1921, this heritage scent from Kiehl’s is as classic as it gets. Citrus notes get the old-school nose party started, followed by floral scents and neroli. It’s masculine, but not overly so — and it’s made to last all day and all night.

This long-lasting cologne is perfectly suitable for all-day use, but given its nickname of “Love Oil,” you may be better off harnessing its musky powers for your next date night.

Top Notes: Bergamot nectar, orange blossom | Middle Notes: Rose, lily, ylang-ylang, neroli | Base Notes: Tonka nut, white patchouli, musk

Club De Nuit’s Intense Man lives up to its name with long-lasting black currant, birch, vanilla, and other stand-out scents. A little of this long-lasting cologne goes a (very) long way, so you don’t want to overdo it when applying.

Intense Man is likely best left to the great outdoors — as opposed to, say, an office environment — where it’s aggressive (in all the right ways) notes can latch onto the breeze. If you’re looking for a solid, everyday fragrance that you can wear all day and all year long, you’ve found it.

Top Notes: Bergamot, lemon, pineapple, black currant | Middle Notes: Birch, jasmine, rose | Base Notes: Vanilla, ambergris, patchouli

Sometimes, you need a classic, no-frills long-lasting cologne to keep you smelling right. Enter: Boss Bottled from Hugo Boss. You’ve likely seen the bottle and smelled its apple and wood notes around town — it’s a staple in most bathrooms, and for good reason.

Apply a spritz or two of this light and airy long-lasting cologne in the morning and leave the bottle at home even if you’ll be out all day. The notes of cinnamon, geranium, and fruit will change throughout the day the longer you wear it, all without losing its strength and allure.

Top Notes: Apple | Middle Notes: Geranium, cinnamon | Base Notes: Wood

If you’ve said it once, you’ve said it a million times. When is someone going to create a fragrance bottle with a fully customizable LED ticker display on the front of it? You’ve said that, right? Anyway, that exists, and the Eau de parfum inside of the bottle is equally interesting.

This offering from Moncler would make a great gift for the gentleman who might appreciate a cool, statement-making bottle to put on his vanity. But more importantly, a gentleman who would appreciate a woody, long-lasting scent that makes just enough of a statement without overpowering the room.

Top Notes: Alpine green accord, clary sage | Middle Notes: Cypress, cedarwood | Base Notes: Mountain woods accord, vetiver

Almost all of Sauvage’s olfactory notes evoke rustic and natural elements, making it a solid travel companion if you and a significant other are heading out on a hiking or camping trip. Or, yes, just cozying up by the fire in a mountain lodge somewhere.

Cedar, sandalwood, amber, leather, and many other prominent scents work together to give this long-lasting cologne its unique, outdoor-friendly characteristics. Live in the city? Whip this cologne out whenever you feel like transporting yourself and those around you to the great outdoors, if only in your mind.

Top Notes: Calabrian bergamot, cardamom, elemi, mandarin | Middle Notes: Amber, leather, cedar, raspberry, sandalwood | Base Notes: Tonka bean, vanilla

Ah, London in the 1920s. You… probably weren’t there. But if you were, it had to be pretty exciting, what with all the dancing and gin-ing and general roaring. If you missed out, fear not — Penhaligon’s has thankfully bottled that spirit with their Juniper Sling offering.

At the heart of this gin-inspired cologne is a formidable top note of juniper berry. Otherwise, keep your nose peeled for black pepper, leather, brown sugar, and black cherry throughout. It’s a fun scent that comes in a fun bottle complete with a bowtie, so it would also make a great gift for the gin lover in your life.

Top Notes: Cinnamon, orange brandy, angelica, juniper berry | Middle Notes: Cardamom, black pepper, leather, orris wood | Base Notes: Brown sugar, black cherry, vetiver, ambrox

FAQ

    • It depends on several factors like the cologne’s ingredients and how your skin reacts to the product, for instance. But generally, colognes with woodsy or generally heavier ingredients and scents tend to last longer.

      • You might be surprised to hear that your skin type and general chemical makeup can affect the way a cologne smells, but that seems to be the case with many people. Things like what you do during the day and night and how warm or cold you are can also affect how any given cologne will smell on you.

        • Experts suggest a number of ways to make your cologne last as long as possible. Though the list is long, a few common suggestions are spritzing right after a shower, making sure your skin is moisturized, applying the cologne to your clothes and making sure you apply it to your pulse points where the skin is typically thinner.

          • Though we’re not aware of a conclusive consensus on this, it’s widely suggested that rubbing Vaseline on your pulse points before applying cologne can increase the scent’s longevity throughout the day and night. The thinking is that petroleum jelly helps lock in the cologne’s properties, releasing scents at slower intervals over time, thus making them last longer.

Wunmi Mosaku on Police Reform and the We Own This City Finale: “Not Enough Has Changed”

To watch, in real time, Wunmi Mosaku grasp at hope is to witness an uncanny echo of her work onscreen. In Lovecraft Country, Luther, and even Loki, the Nigerian-British actress plays characters grappling with the ugly reality before them: Do they work to topple the system, or learn to survive within it? Perhaps no role of Mosaku’s has better illustrated that battle than Nicole Steele on HBO’s We Own This City, executive producer and writer David Simon’s spiritual successor to his beloved crime drama The Wire.

In We Own This City, which aired its series finale on Monday night, Mosaku plays Nicole, a Department of Justice attorney within the Civil Rights Division who’s tasked with drawing up a consent decree with the City of Baltimore. In essence, the document would outline the Baltimore Police Department’s long history of abuse, and the decree would require the city to institute police reform. Based on the book of the same name and the real-life events surrounding it, We Own This City follows BPD’s Gun Trace Task Force, from which eight officers are eventually convicted on corruption charges. Through interviews inside and outside of the BPD, Nicole works to piece together a significant case for reform episode by episode—only to recognize just how little will change if she does.

Earlier in the series, Nicole insists she doesn’t need to make her battle for civil rights “her everything.” To some degree, she has the luxury of patience: She was raised in a WASP-y neighborhood outside of Washington, D.C. and didn’t share the ugly experiences with police that forever tainted her brother’s perception of them. But as the show progresses, Nicole’s carefully restrained fury is made more and more visceral. She realizes that, to stay in the fight, it must become your everything. And even then: It might be a fight that’s impossible to win.

During one particularly poignant scene, a police academy instructor tells Nicole what she already knows—but is struggling to accept—about the War on Drugs: “Is the Justice Department or even the Office of Civil Rights ready to declare that we long ago lost this war? That we’ve achieved nothing but full prisons and routine brutality and a complete collapse of trust between police departments and their cities?”

By the time the finale rolls around, the Trump Administration is incoming, and Jeff Sessions “wants to arrest everyone he can for fuckin’ marijuana possession,” Nicole tells a colleague, her voice breaking for the first time all season. As she’s on the verge of trembling, she insists, “I’ll never make it four years.” Such a declaration, though made in the sway of emotion, nevertheless serves as prophecy: Nicole ends up resigning from her position at the DOJ, a move that her colleague and protege, Ahmed, views as cruelly cynical. Is she saying none of their work matters? That they should just give up? Putting a hand on Ahmed’s shoulder and leaning in close, Nicole cooly says, “What I’m saying is, it’s your turn, motherfucker.”

But Mosaku knows that passing the baton isn’t a clean getaway for Nicole. As we discuss the current state of police reform in 2022, Mosaku’s face twists; she repeatedly stops and restarts her sentences, often at a loss for what to say next. Only days prior to our interview, a gunman had shot and killed 10 Black people in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, an act investigated as a racist hate crime. A few days later, a mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, would soon reveal shocking inaction from the city’s police department during the massacre.

“It just feels like not enough has changed,” Mosaku says. “It sometimes makes me feel a little hopeless.”

And yet the actress feels these stories, for all the trauma they stir up, are essential to the fabric of American culture: “I feel like it’s just so urgent, this topic of, ‘Who is policing us? What do they do with that position of power and authority? Whose human rights are valued? And whose dignity is valued? Whose safety is valued? Whose lives are valued? Whose hopes and dreams are valued?’’ she says. Below, Mosaku talks through the We Own This City finale—and what the city of Baltimore taught her as an actress and human being.

Paul Schiraldi/HBO

Unlike other characters in this series, Nicole wasn’t based on anyone in real life. So what went into crafting her? What research did you do to make her feel real?

I mean, I do the same thing with all of my characters, whether it’s a person who’s real or not. It’s to figure out who they were before we meet them, because we’re a product of everyone we’ve ever met, every experience we’ve ever had. So it was understanding what a a Black girl from Bethesda, who grew up with her father as a lawyer in a neighborhood where she was one of very few, if any, Black people; whose brother had been terrorized by the police; who had an idea of what justice meant, and tried to live towards that…I had to understand the justice system in the States and figure out why she pivoted, before we meet her, to the civil rights division and why she pivots again.

But I think Nicole is basically, like, the audience within the show. I hope she’s asking the same questions as the viewers watching at home. “How did this happen? Why did this happen? And how can we stop this from happening again?”

I thought it was interesting that we don’t get much about Nicole’s history until the penultimate episode. Only then do we learn that she used to prosecute drug cases and that her brother had these racist experiences at the hands of police. From your perspective, why do you think it was important for the audience to learn these details later, as opposed to right when we meet her?

I guess because it’s not about her, maybe. Maybe this is a very big generalization, but I would say most Black people have a relationship with law enforcement in some way, whether it’s a fear, an inherent fear, or a direct conflict. It’s a relationship that is strained and painful and scary. I feel like you could look at [Nicole] and think, Oh, she’s put together. And she feels confident in these spaces. But still, even though she said she had it a lot easier than her brother, the residue of what happened with her brother still permeates her life.

I guess I don’t know why [the writers] waited that long. The only thing I can think of is that it’s not about my character. It’s not my story. But I think it was put in there to maybe show that it doesn’t matter how high you fly, there is still a tension. The tension is the repercussions of centuries of oppression. It vibrates on a cellular level throughout the whole community, that a grief felt here on the East Coast is absolutely felt on the West Coast.

Something that really struck me about your performance in this series is how it moves from one end of the spectrum to the other, incrementally, throughout each episode. Nicole starts out confident and steady. By the finale, she’s cursing; she’s almost on the verge of tears; she ends up resigning. How did you go about demonstrating that shift in her over time, without, in a sense, clueing the audience into what was happening?

I just read the scripts over and over. And I kind of charted where she was. She’s trying to change things on a federal level. And she realizes that the only way things are going to change is if it’s like… We’re talking from the top down. This consent decree will only do so much. The whole system needs to change. I mean, she’s just one person. It doesn’t matter how fit you are, you run on a treadmill and you will get tired. And you do have to hit the emergency stop in order to preserve yourself.

That leads me into my next question, because I thought that scene where Nicole tells Ahmed, her colleague, “It’s your turn, motherfucker,” you delivered so beautifully. But I’m curious, what did that scene represent to you?

I mean, for me, I look at activists and freedom fighters, and I think of them as gods, demigods. I’m so grateful, so grateful, because without them, I wouldn’t have the freedoms that I experience. And I know we’re nowhere near where we need to be, but I look at these people and they stuck their head above the precipice and they became a target. And this is every single person who advocates for equality and humanity and the dignity of people. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are.

[Nicole] gets to bow out. She’s not assassinated. She’s not killed. When we gain more rights for a certain person, type of person, or whatever, really what we’re doing is opening up for everyone to have more rights with that…But I do think it’s that feeling of like…You have to pass the baton on. At the same time, she’s very blessed to be able to walk away from her part in it. Lots of people aren’t given that opportunity.

I think there’s two different lenses through which you could view Nicole’s resignation. You could view it as a tragic thing: This system is so broken that nothing can ever fix it, and this was a casualty of that. Or you can see it the way you’re describing: It’s a triumph. Nicole escapes intact. She gets to take care of herself and pass the baton. Which do you view it as?

I don’t think it’s tragic. I think it’s tragic that it’s not finished, that the job isn’t done. We haven’t achieved equality. That’s tragic. But I look at her and I think, “Okay. You did as much as you could.” Now, I want her to enjoy. I want her to be at peace. I’m not saying that leaving the job will give her peace. But also, I think that it’s not for just a few people to burn themselves out. It’s for all of us. [The work of justice] is too much for one person. It’s too much for the civil rights office. It’s too much. It has to be a shared burden for us to actually achieve equality if that’s what we truly want.

I don’t see it as a bad thing that she leaves. Especially with the state of the world and the tragedy that we see on a day to day basis with white supremacy and violence and the evil that Black people have to face on a day-to-day, I feel like that trauma is huge and a heavy weight for everyone to bear. And I feel like it should be someone else to do this job. If you already have to deal with all of the stuff that we have to deal with on a day-to-day, to then also be the people trying to fight? It’s a lot.

wunmi mosaku and other cast of we own this city gather during a scene in episode 2

Paul Schiraldi/HBO

It’s interesting how this series ends just as the Trump administration is coming in. This whole event takes place prior to George Floyd’s death, the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, and the way that, as you’ve mentioned several times, had a ripple effect around the globe. So, looking back on the series now, what do you think it represents in the national conversation about policing and Black lives? Did knowing what was coming shift how you viewed this show?

It’s interesting because I have to think about it from when I read [the scripts]. I read them in 2021, so after the global reckoning in 2020. I feel like…Reading it and knowing where we are, I mean, it just feels like not enough has changed.

It sometimes makes me feel a little hopeless that something as big as [the 2020 protests] can happen. After the murder of George Floyd, after this huge global racial reckoning, that anyone could still kill and brutalize unarmed Black people, it just shows to me that I…It blows my mind that you’ll have this huge moment that will be written about in history and still nothing changed. I don’t know. I read the scripts after all of that and I was like, “This needs to be told, and maybe someone will feel, like, that it’s not just a ‘bad apple’ or this or that. It’s a systemic thing. Maybe someone who feels safe with the police might now advocate for all of us to feel safe with the police.”

I can only hope that someone’s heart has changed, one person at a time, because these huge global-changing moments happen, and still we get the same. If one person… [Shakes her head.] One is too little. One is too little. But at least one person feels emboldened to change and move toward helping, then that matters. That does matter. And that means that what we’ve done means something.

But the reality that we’re living in, nothing’s changed. So, yeah. I don’t know. I don’t really know how to answer that other than not enough has changed.

How did your experience on the set of this show shape you as an actress? What did it mean to you, as a sum of its parts?

I think being in Baltimore, and being surrounded by the amazingly strong and resilient and loving people of Baltimore, and seeing the wounds that this police force have left, and how the people have continued through the pain and the atrocities, I feel like that resilience and strength was very humbling. Because they really welcomed us in. They really wanted us to tell their story. And just being around people who have actually been affected and still have their humanity and their grace intact is quite an extraordinary thing to witness, because it shows just the depth of humanity within us, as a people.

The anger and the pain can be there, but it doesn’t mean you lose the good stuff, too. I think that, for me, was a huge thing to really witness and be surrounded by, because so many people on our set had been victims of [police violence], or had family members, friends, who had been there at the uprising [after Freddie Gray’s killing]. These people lived it and still have this huge capacity for love and compassion. And haven’t been ruined by it.

Jane Fonda’s Go-To Moisturizer for Radiant Skin at 84 Is on Major Sale Right Now

  • Jane Fonda’s go-to moisturizer for hydrated skin and a radiant complexion at 84 is on sale now.
  • The L’Oréal Paris Skincare Age Perfect Rosy Tone Face Moisturizer is currently 51% off on Amazon and retails for less than $15.
  • Helen Mirren also loves the moisturizer and used it to prepare for the recent SAG awards.

Jane Fonda’s youthful glow and smooth skin continue to leave us speechless (well, that along with her acting prowess and activism). We’ve been stocking our shelves with her favorite skincare products for a while now, so when we see one of her go-to’s on sale, we get a bit excited. Lucky for us, L’Oréal Paris Skincare Age Perfect Rosy Tone Face Moisturizer, one of the 84-year-old’s “current favorites,” is 51% off right now on Amazon.

    L’Oreal Paris

Age Perfect Rosy Tone Face Moisturizer

    $29.99

    $15.52 (48% off)

Fonda previously told Glamour that hydration was the key to keeping her skin youthful and fresh every day, and that L’Oréal Paris Skincare Age Perfect Rosy Tone Face Moisturizer was one of her “current favorites” when it comes to moisturizers.

“It’s just about keeping my skin from being dry,” she said in the interview. “As I’ve gotten older, my skin and hair have become even drier. So keeping moisturized and protected with sunscreen is pretty important.”

And she’s not the only one who classifies the moisturizer as a favorite. We love it so much, that we named it one of the best face moisturizers for dry skin in 2022. And Helen Mirren used this exact product to achieve a radiant look at the SAG awards, and she, like Fonda, is one of the brand’s beauty ambassadors.

The moisturizer’s ingredient list packs a punch, including imperial peony, which is enhanced with rosy pigments to give skin a slightly pink hue, LHA (lipohydroxy acid) to exfoliate dull skin and stimulate surface cell renewal for fresh skin every day, and salicylic acid for treating uneven skin and signs of aging. It’s non-greasy and leaves skin feeling hydrated, healthier, and ultra-smooth.

One reviewer raved, “This is a wonderful moisturizer for an older woman. I’m 77 and my skin is pretty good for my age but quite pale. This was just the thing that it needed.” Another wrote, “I couldn’t be happier with this product. The healthy look I get with this product is amazing on my 79-year-old face.”

If you want to stock up on more of Fonda’s skincare picks for a youthful and radiant glow, check out some of her must-haves below.

Ah, the humble T-shirt. Is there anything it can’t do? Well, obviously, yes, there are loads of things it can’t do but sartorially speaking, probably not. Dress it up with tailoring for an evening out, or pair it with joggers and a few dollops of spilled salsa, much to the disgust of your significant other, for an evening in. The point is, this wonder garment is one of the most versatile items in your wardrobe.

And right now, designer T shirts in particular are having something of a menswear moment. Loud logos from baller brands are trending hard, but it’s about more than sleeveless stunting. The fact that the T-shirt is a staple is a reason to spend more, not less.

Yes, it’s financially tempting to visit a budget chain and pick up a bin liner full of plain white tees, but doing so won’t actually save you any money in the long run. Once you wear them you’ll realise that your nipples are clearly visible under certain light, they fade easily and will soon be relegated to the pile of clothes you keep for doing the DIY in.

Investing in a few high-quality designer T shirts from respected names may cost you a little (or a lot) more, but those premium materials and superior construction will be evident the moment you slip one over your head.

What Kind of Designer T-Shirts Should You Be Buying?

Generally when it comes to designer t shirts, you’ll be faced with two options:

    Plain Tees

Classic, understated designs will never fall from favour, so if you want to keep things clean and timeless then these are what you want to be aiming for. Paying for a brand name may hike up the price significantly, but spend the extra cash and you’ll be more likely to find a flattering fit, meaning more wearability and bang for your buck in the long run.

“A good quality plain T-shirt is an essential for any man of any age,” explains Damien Paul, head of menswear at high-end clothing retailer Matches Fashion. “We all think of the likes of Steve McQueen or James Dean when we reference a plain white tee – it’s a timeless piece, a no brainer. The bonus is you can wear with a suit, jeans, chinos, shorts. It never feels old and that is very much part of the charm.”

It’s well worth investing in a high quality white cotton t-shirt along with a basic black t-shirt that you can take from the office to a night out.

    designer t-shirts for men

    Logo Tees

Alternatively, if you’re not scared of throwing yourself at the odd shirt trend, give the big logo thing a go. Huge brand logos on T-shirts are a big deal at the moment, with esteemed houses such as Gucci leading the way, flanked by trailblazers like Off-White and Vetements.

“The ‘logomania’ trend continues,” says Paul. “Rooted in the ’90s [revival] and a signifier of conspicuous consumption, I think the appeal has been helped by the fact that logo tees ‘pop’ on social media and are popular with musicians.” Yes, some of these T-shirts may cost more than a two-week all-inclusive holiday to the Canary Islands, but if you’ve got the money to burn then we’re not here to judge.

And, while there may be no logical reason for spending in excess of a ton on something that probably cost less than your morning coffee to make, there are dozens of completely illogical ones. And aren’t they the best?

The Best Designer T-Shirt Brands To Buy Right Now

If you’re looking to update your designer t-shirt inventory, these are the go-to brands to buy right now for comfort, quality, and of course, style.

    1. Gucci

Leading the logomania trend is historic Italian trendsetter Gucci. The respected label has been one of fashion’s hardest hitters since its creation in the 1920s and has long counted some of the biggest names on the face of the earth among its style disciples.

For unadulterated luxury, show-off prestige and that iconic green and red colouring, there’s no-one that comes close right now.

    2. Comme des Garçons PLAY

Rei Kawakubo’s future-shaping Japanese label has earned itself a reputation as one of the most forward-thinking names in fashion. However, if you’re not quite ready to leave the house dressed like a grey turd with a ripped-up Brillo pad on top, Comme des Garçons’s PLAY line is a good starting point.

CDG PLAY features the iconic ‘bug-eyed heart’ motif and is known for its simple staple pieces, as well as bold logo T-shirts, making it the perfect way to nod to high fashion without looking like a total cabbage.

    3. Stussy

Streetwear may be the new face of haute couture but it wouldn’t be where it is now if it hadn’t been for an enterprising Californian surfer who goes by the name of Shawn Stussy. His eponymous brand quickly became known for its logo T-shirts and bold graphics and it almost single-handedly sparked the movement that has infiltrated the upper echelons of fashion.

With these designer T-shirts, expect heavy branding, graphics, bold colours, tie-dye and script logos aplenty.

With Belgian tastemaker Raf Simons at the helm as chief creative officer, the beloved brand is moving in a bold new direction but the classic designer T-shirts have remained pretty much unchanged.

It’s the go-to for sleek branding, quality fabrics and nineties nostalgia.

Love it or hate it, there’s no denying that Vetements is doing something right. The boundary-pushing design collective has been at the forefront of fashion for several years and that’s something that doesn’t look set to change anytime in the near future.

The label’s T-shirts have seen Vetements hit headlines across the globe – most notably when it sent Gosha Rubchinskiy down the runway in a DHL top – but if you want a slice of the action, you should probably ring your bank and warn them first, because this level of crazy doesn’t come cheap.

The recently appointed Louis Vuitton creative director started his brand out in Milan in 2012 and it has since gone on to produce some of the most hyped-up items around, playing a key role in high fashion’s adoption of streetwear. Its designer T-shirts let you splash that white-hot branding about as cheaply as it comes. Which is not to say they’re anything other than nosebleed expensive.

    15. Ralph Lauren

Preppy, all American label Ralph Lauren is without a doubt one of the most recognisable fashion brands on the planet. With a product range incorporating everything from sportswear to tailoring, it’s no wonder RL has such a diverse following. However, the item for which the NY-based imprint is best known is a simple, collared polo shirt. Your wardrobe is bound to have one or two, so they might as well come from the label that popularised them in the first place.

Jennifer Lopez Shares Her Steamy First Bikini Photo of Summer 2022

Jennifer Lopez didn’t wait long to unveil her first bikini photo of summer 2022. The singer shared a carousel featuring two photos and a video of her posing like a pro in a black bikini and JLo Jennifer Lopez footwear heels. On display were her toned abs and impeccably styled, blonde-highlighted hair. “Summer mode: activated. 😎🖤” the 52-year-old star captioned the post. You can shop the heels here.

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Lopez spoke in December 2020 to ELLE.com about skincare and how she swears by sunscreen for skin protection and anti-aging above all. “I was in my 20s and I was dating this guy,” she reflected on when she was first recommended to try Botox. “He went to one dermatologist and I went to another dermatologist. Basically, my dermatologist gave me a great cleanser and some sunscreen and said, ‘If you do this from now on, your skin is healthy, you’re young right now, it’s going to be great.’ And he’s like, ‘But the sunscreen is the thing.’”

“And then I went to this other doctor with the boyfriend, and again, I was 20-something years old, and I haven’t ever had Botox to this day,” she continued. “And she said, ‘Did you know you have a little line right here? We should start Botox.’ I mean, I had to be 23 years old, right? And I was like, ‘I’m going to pass.’ I didn’t like needles anyway, but the boyfriend’s like, ‘Yeah, you should start it. I do that.’ I was like, no, thank you. And I just wonder what would’ve happened to me if I would’ve started Botox at 23, what I would look like right now. My face would be a totally different face today.”

“One of the big things I would encourage everybody to do from the time they’re 15 years old, even younger, is wear sunscreen every day,” she continued. “We developed a sunscreen you can wear every single day as your day moisturizer, and that is going to protect you more than anything. That’s a big skincare secret that people kind of do but don’t do. They use moisturizers, but they don’t put on sunscreen every day. That is something I have done from that time I was 22 years old.”

8 Of The Best Beard Straighteners That Will Change Your Grooming Routine (2022 Edition)

There are two types of guys in this world.

Guy 1: “How have I gone my whole life without the wizarding wonders of this beard straightener? Two words: game-changer.”

Guy 2: “Wait… beard straighteners are a thing?”

If you’re in the latter camp, welcome to the first day of the rest of your life. If the former, you still stand to learn a thing or two about the best beard straighteners available to you today. With many options ranging from brush to comb, these marvels of the men’s grooming world are essentially a hybrid of a flat iron and a beard brush. Used properly, they can help keep your unruly face mane in check and allow you to more seamlessly apply things like beard oils and other products.

To help you untangle the endless options out there, take a look at our picks for the 8 best beard straighteners on the market today.

    Our Top Picks

When it comes to keeping your beard majestically billowing across your face for all the world to marvel at, it’s not enough to leave it to a popularity contest. Still… there’s something to be said for the mostly positive opinions of over 6,000 people. Many Amazon reviewers cite that Cayzor’s straightener has excelled where previous purchases have failed.

From a technical standpoint, it reaches temperature in about a minute, features a heat-resistant silicone coating, and has an auto-off feature that kicks in after 30 minutes. The price point is also competitive compared to similar products.

    What we like

    • Positive reviews instill confidence in the product
    • Competitive price point
    What we don’t like

    • Not ideal for long or thick beards

This straightening stick from Wild Willies is your new go-to if your facial hair doesn’t like to play nice. While its heat settings will be suitable for any beard styles or hair (we love the 2-in-1 option), its non-scalding tech really stands out. With three heat settings, this one is designed to detangle the unruliest of beards.

And its ion technology generates heat at a much faster clip than other options, allowing you to reduce the dreaded bathroom routine by a crucial minute or two. It also has an auto shut-off feature if your mind happens to wander too far in the direction of the date you’re getting ready for.

    What we like

    • Ion technology for fast heating
    • Three heat settings for any type of facial hair
    What we don’t like

    • This one only reaches 400F, making it slightly cooler than competitors

True to its name, Aberlite’s pocket beard straightener is super compact, making it the perfect size to toss in your carry-on or trunk before traveling. Whether you’re hitting the road for business or pleasure, this pint-sized beard tamer will keep you looking polished with its five heat settings that reach temperature in about a minute.

If you’ve got a shorter beard, you’ll be happy to hear that it also features a dense bristle design, making it suitable for any length of facial hair.

    What we like

    • Compact design
    • Not just for long beards
    What we don’t like

    • Some reviewers complain of short lifespan

Sure, you don’t have to charge corded beard straighteners, but sometimes you just want to tame your beard without bobbing and weaving around an unruly cord. Enter this solidly constructed cordless option from Vikicon.

It features most of the bells and whistles that you’ll find with other straighteners on this list, such as auto shut-off, multiple heat settings, and fast heating ion technology. You’re also working with a helpful LED display for monitoring temperatures, plus an anti-static coating that helps reduce uncomfortable tugging. And did we mention it’s cordless?

    What we like

    • Cordless
    • Anti-static coating for smoother straightening
    What we don’t like

    • Requires frequent charging

Arkham’s contribution to our list is the total package. You’re getting the straightener itself with Arkam’s Single Stroke Technology (SST) specifically designed to tame your mane one section at a time with a single stroke. But you’re also getting a wooden comb and a handsome case to tote it all around in.

The cord swivels as you move, allowing you to focus on grooming rather than untangling yourself. And not to be one-upped by other fast-heating straighteners on this list, its no-scald ceramic plates heat up in around 30 seconds. This kit would make a great gift with its comb and case, even if it’s for you.

    What we like

    • Comes with a wooden comb and case
    • Heats in 30 seconds
    What we don’t like

    • Not as effective on shorter beards

Is this a beard straightener? Yes. Kind of. Pretty much. Probably. Anyway, the general look, feel and design of this golden wonder are anything but standard. But looks aside, this straightening comb packs a performance punch — it heats up quickly, has a tangle-free cord, and features a whopping 20 heat settings.

The 38300 is best for a confident guy who prioritizes performance and comfort over what his straightener looks like. Plus, Andis has been in the styling game for over 80 years, which speaks to the product’s construction and ability to stand up to any beard in its path.

    What we like

    • 20 heat settings
    • Quick heat time
    What we don’t like

    • Unconventional design for a beard straightener

Coming in at roughly $13, this is by far one of the most budget-friendly of our best beard straighteners. And bonus: you’re not giving up many of the features that are available with some of the higher priced mane tamers. You’ve still got ionic technology working to keep your beard straight without being damaged. You’ve still got a relatively fast heat time at around two minutes. And you’ve still got an anti-static coating for a smooth stroke.

But if you’re looking for multiple heat settings, that’s where Bilaro’s price point will start to make more sense. Though it will likely be more than adequate depending on your beard, this straightener only has one heat setting.

    What we like

    • Budget-friendly
    • Solid features for its price point
    What we don’t like

    • Only one heat setting

Aberlite makes its second appearance on our list with the EDC, and for good reason — especially if you’ve got a long beard. Coming in at just under two inches wide, this magic mane wand is designed for maximum efficiency when it comes to grooming longer beards. And with five heat settings — the highest of which is 430-degrees — it’s not only ready to take on long beards but curly and unruly ones as well.

If you fit that description, the EDC will likely suit you well. That said, it’s more of a niche product and works best on beards two inches or longer. If you have a shorter beard, there are better options out there for you.

    What we like

    • Wide plate for increased coverage
    • Heat settings up to 440-degrees
    What we don’t like

    • Not as versatile as other options

What to look for in a beard straightener

    Portability

Beard straighteners come in all shapes and sizes. If you travel a lot — be it for work or pleasure — take note of the device’s size. Several straighteners are designed specifically for travel. Others are more universally designed but maintain a manageable size for tossing in a carry-on. It’s also worth checking out cordless models, which are that much more convenient and portable.

    Heat control

This is one of the more crucial considerations when picking out the best beard straightener for you. Generally, the higher the temperature setting, the better the straightener will be at taming long, curly, and unruly beards. If your facial hair fits that description, make sure the beard straightener you choose has a setting that approaches 400 degrees at a minimum. For shorter beards, heat setting options should be considered less of a deciding factor.

    Width

How wide your beard straightener is should directly correlate to how long (and wide) your beard is. More beard means more real estate to tame. So it only makes sense to seek out a wider plate width to help speed up the process and cover more ground as efficiently as possible.

    FAQ

      • A beard straightener is essentially a cross between a flat iron and a comb or brush. Beard straighteners have small heat plates tucked away beneath comb or brush bristles. The plate and bristles work in tandem to safely and effectively smooth and straighten your beard.

        • Before each use, it’s recommended that you clean and dry your beard. From there, it’s as simple as plugging in and turning on your straightener, then slowly brushing from top to bottom in one fluid motion. Repeat this process through your whole beard or whichever parts you want straightened. And pay attention to the heat settings — typically, the longer and more unruly the beard, the higher the heat setting you’ll want.

          • Since each product is made differently, always follow the manufacturer’s directions for cleaning your beard straightener. A common technique is weaving a disinfecting wipe or damp cloth through the device’s bristles to help reduce oil and hair buildup.

            • How often you use a beard straightener depends on a handful of factors, such as how curly or unruly your beard is, how long it is and other considerations. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer as it will depend on personal preference and the unique considerations of your beard.

              • There are two basic types of beard straighteners — hair-drying and heated brushes. As you might imagine, hair-drying brushes blow warm air directly onto your beard through the bristles. Heated brushes have a heat source directly underneath the bristles. Though there are nuances to each type — ceramic, tourmaline or ionic, for example — most beard straighteners fall under one of those two main categories.

23 Movies to Watch on the Fourth of July

What about taking in a movie this Fourth of July? Sure, setting off fireworks and running around with playfully dangerous sparklers can be fun, but some people would much rather watch other fools launch pyrotechnics into the sky from the safety of their homes. Your uncle may say there’s nothing more American than grilling hot dogs and burgers outside on Independence Day, but who said you can’t celebrate the birth of our nation in front of your TV? Here’s a list of films to settle down with for the holiday.

How to Style a Silk Scarf This Summer

    Photography by Getty Images

Guaranteed to be the most versatile accessory in your wardrobe!

One of the best packing tips I’ve ever received is to always bring a silk scarf. Why? Because you never know when you’re going to need it. What if your luggage gets lost in transit and you’re left with only a white t-shirt? A brilliantly coloured neckerchief will instantly elevate your outfit. What if you misread the weather report, and instead of the balmy temperatures you dressed for, it’s a scorching sunny day? A slinky square of fabric makes the perfect impromptu bandeau top. And God forbid you get trapped in a tower Disney Princess style, and you miraculously remembered to pack fifty scarves. You can tie them all together and escape your evil stepmother equivalent.

So, if you need a style refresher or just some warm weather dressing inspiration, here is how to style a silk scarf this summer.

    The classic

The silk scarf is an iconic accessory for a reason: everyone has worn it. From Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday to Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, celebrities have embraced the neckerchief to add a little oomph to any ensemble instantly. The key to making this trend feel current is in the silhouette. Embrace oversized proportions with a large blazer and pair it with a simple under-layer, like a slip dress or high-waisted shorts.

    The bandana

After nearly 20 years, the bandana is back. On the heels of the late ’90s/Y2K resurgence, this stylish staple is making its triumphant return, along with low-rise jeans and tube tops. To transition the look from teeny bopper to refined boho babe, try organizing your outfit around one colour, as seen above. Alternatively, a linen button-down blouse will look charmingly retro without venturing too far into costume territory.

    The TikTok trend

The word “scarf top” currently has over 1 billion views on TikTok, so yes, you could say it’s pretty popular. Countless videos go into great detail on how to style a silk scarf as a makeshift blouse, but we recommend doing a few test runs at home before venturing outside. For beginners, start with this triangular shape, and work your way into more advanced and skin-revealing combinations as your knot tying skills improve.

    Bonus: The bag

Many of us only have a few bags in our closets, so it can be hard to make them feel fresh. Luckily, silk scarves provide the perfect remedy to handbag fatigue. Whether the material is hanging down the side or tied around the straps, it’s an easy way to breathe new life into an old item.
