Drag Race Winner Symone is FASHION’s Summer Cover Star

Symone is supremely stylish, charmingly goofy and the toast of the drag, fashion and, now, acting worlds. Is it any wonder she’s having the time of her life?

Drag Superstar Symone can’t stop smiling. She’s smiling when we talk about her winning season 13 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. She’s smiling when we discuss drag as a form of activism. She’s even smiling when she experiences tech troubles. And it’s not just any smile; it’s a rare smile that feels completely genuine. It’s radiant, infectious and just a little goofy, and it takes up her entire face. And with the world at her bedazzled fingertips, Symone truly does have a lot to smile about.

During her time on Drag Race, the self-proclaimed “Ebony Enchantress” quickly became a favourite among fans and judges for her bubbly personality, quirky laugh and avant-garde style. Since winning the crown in 2021, she has become a bona fide fashion icon, sitting in the front row at various fashion weeks, starring in Moschino’s Fall 2021 campaign and gracing the Met Gala red carpet.

But I’m not greeted by an elaborate hairdo or a designer gown on this particular rainy afternoon. Instead, Symone is out of drag, fresh-faced and wearing a graphic Tina Turner T-shirt. Behind her, I get a glimpse into her L.A. life: leftover takeout on a coffee table; laundry on its way to the washer; piles of books and magazines waiting to be read. It’s a magical mess that you might expect to find in the home of five drag queens, a couple of whom make repeated appearances in the background throughout our video chat. “We’re very much a family,” says Symone of her drag mom and sisters, who call themselves The House of Avalon. “I’ve known them since my sophomore year of college, so I’ve pretty much grown up with them.”

Before meeting her drag family, Symone was a makeup-obsessed teen from Conway, Ark., who would rush home from school to try out beauty tutorials. “I had two hours before my parents returned from work, so I would do my makeup, and then as soon as I heard the garage door open, I would wipe it all off,” she says. Symone’s secret hobby — inspired by early seasons of Drag Race and her mom’s love of dressing up — quickly evolved into an integral part of her identity. “I wanted to find a way to express myself because being a teenager was rough,” she says, referring to her experience with bullying in middle school. With some extra cash coming in from a part-time job, Symone was able to quietly build a makeup collection from Target and started to post her looks on Instagram.

Despite Arkansas’s conservative reputation, Symone grew up in a more open-minded part of the state, with her family fully embracing her queer identity once she told them. “Of course, it was still a challenge, and I still went through being [derogatorily] called ‘gay’ and all of that, but it was nothing compared to if I had lived 30 minutes away,” she explains. “I also think that because of the internet and Drag Race becoming more mainstream, when I got to high school, my sexuality and hobbies weren’t such a big deal. Even if people weren’t on board, they were at least open to it.”

It was one of Symone’s friends who encouraged her to have her first-ever drag experience at the school’s prom. “It hadn’t occurred to me to do it until she said it,” admits Symone. And thanks to the mom of one of her classmates (“she was the only shop owner who would let me try on a dress”), Symone was able to pick a pretty little pink number to wear and even got the support of her principal. “At first, he didn’t recognize me, but when he did, he told me that I looked great and that if anyone said anything to me, I should let him know.”

Symone’s first drag performance was at a local bar’s amateur night a few months later. “I was so nervous that I was shaking,” she recalls. “But as soon as the hostess introduced me, it was like a switch. I still can’t really explain it. I remember the spotlight hitting me and then it was over.”

But Symone’s drag career was just beginning. During her time at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, she met Grant Vanderbilt, a House of Avalon resident, at a drag competition. In fact, it was Vanderbilt who encouraged her not to wear body padding, which Symone has now become known for. “I didn’t know it was possible to be a drag queen without padding,” she says. “Then I tried it, and I felt so free, so I kept doing it,” she laughs. Soon, she spent every weekend and summer with The House of Avalon in Little Rock and eventually became a permanent member of the drag family in 2019, when she moved into their L.A. complex. It was there that Symone decided to apply to be on Drag Race. “I didn’t think I was worthy enough to be on the show, but everyone in the house was literally screaming at me to send in a tape, so I did.”

And the rest is history. When Symone won multiple challenges and created numerous viral fashion moments, including a white dress adorned with bullet holes as a tribute to the Black Lives Matter protests, it was clear that she had come to not only slay but also be unapologetically Black and celebrate her culture.

For Symone, drag is more than dressing up; it’s activism. “By its very definition, drag goes against society,” she says. “Society fears what it cannot control, and you cannot control a drag queen.” But, ironically, drag has given Symone a sense of control over her own life. In an especially poignant Drag Race episode, Symone revealed that as Reggie (her name outside of drag), she felt pressure to be perfect after her brother was arrested. “Symone could do anything she wanted — she could get drunk and be loud and have fun,” she explains when I bring up this moment from the show. “Reggie had to protect his family. He couldn’t make mistakes because he had a real life. So when I discovered drag, it gave me the freedom to not be that person.”

Photography by Greg Swales. Dress, $5,150, top, $1,270, bracelets, $2,265, gloves, $895, and stocking, $275, Gucci.

As the years have passed, the lines between Reggie and Symone have increasingly blurred. “Most queens say it gets harder to balance the two personas, but I think it’s gotten easier,” reveals Symone. “At first, they were two separate entities in my head, but this past year has helped me pour Symone’s charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent back into Reggie.”

This new confidence in her personal life has led to more self-assuredness in her professional one. A 30-second scroll on Symone’s Instagram account demonstrates just how fearless she truly is, especially when it comes to fashion: a neon-green tulle ball gown by Christian Siriano; a Mona Lisa crop top by Jean Paul Gaultier; an all-leather jumpsuit styled by Zendaya’s fairy godfather, Law Roach. Then there are all the magazine covers, red carpets and front row seats at global fashion weeks. “Drag queens are fashion’s new muses,” says Symone of the industry’s current interest in her and her sisters. She explains that “drag queens are always at the forefront of culture,” and considering the massive success of Drag Race — the show is now in its 14th season and has inspired a large count of spinoffs, including Canada’s Drag Race — she’s not exaggerating. Contestants on the show become celebrities overnight, and for Symone, this has led to her pursuing acting, specifically in Bros, the first major studio film to feature an all-LGBTQIA2S+ cast playing all-LGBTQIA2S+ roles. “Acting is similar to drag in that you get to play with how people see you,” she shares. “But I wouldn’t say Symone is a character; she’s more just who I am.”

And who she is is unapologetically herself. She is quick to smile — even quicker to laugh — and brings sunshine wherever she goes. “Drag saved my life,” she reveals. “I mean it. I would not physically be here right now without it. And I think that’s what keeps all of us queens going. We know what it’s like to literally fight to be ourselves. All I want for my drag is for other people to enjoy it and experience it. Making people happy makes me happy.” Mission accomplished.

11 Of The Best Men’s Leather Pants To Add To Your Capsule Wardrobe (2022 Edition)

From Hermès to Jil Sander and Givenchy, many high-end designers have been showcasing head-to-toe leather looks on their recent menswear runways. Leather jackets and coats were not a surprise obviously as they have been a wardrobe staple for men but what about leather pants?

The thought of Men’s leather pants might trigger a horrific discomfort and fear of sweat and tightness around the area – remember the epic (and tragic) Friends episode where Ross couldn’t get those pants back on, making him pathetically trapped in his date’s bathroom?

These horror stories and anecdotes might make men’s leather pants an intimidating contestant when it comes to styling them. But if done the right way, and with the right pair of men’s leather pants, you can achieve the effortless and polished look that you strive for.

Need more convincing? Justin Bieber whipped out his baggy men’s leather pants pulling off his best street style look yet. We’re not sure we can give you more evidence if you’re not already convinced but learning how to wear leather might be the best investment you make this year.

What to look for in Men’s leather pants

Fabric

The first thing you’ll need to consider when scoping for a pair of leather pants is the fabric material – whether you prefer animal leather or faux/vegan leather. Each real animal leather has its own distinct characteristics – lamb being the softest, and cowhide being durable.

But animal leather pants can become extremely detrimental to your wallet, so if you are looking for a more budget-friendly option, opt for vegan or faux leather pants made of polyester or polyurethane compositions. Although these are less durable, they are equally as stylish and will mimic the feel of real leather.

Fit

The fit is also an important aspect to consider when purchasing leather pants – or any pair of bottoms in general. Because leather tends to be less stretchy and can easily trap heat, tighter pants might be uncomfortable for many men.

When considering leather pants, we recommend going for a wider or more relaxed fit than what you are the most used to, as this will free up some leg room and your skin will appreciate the extra breath of fresh air.

Lining

Thanks to modern technology, most leather pants made nowadays are lined with synthetic materials to prevent the leather from naturally shrinking from the heat trapped inside.

This helps prevent your legs from wicking a moderate amount of sweat and helps promote air circulation. If you are worried about getting sweaty, be sure to look out for separate lining information – if you see materials like cotton, polyamide, and acetate, you’re good to go.

FAQ

    • If you want to look effortlessly stylish, go for a Parisian vibe with a simple t-shirt and sneakers (just think of your leather pants replacing your favorite pair of jeans).

If you want to look more on-trend, style a head to toe leather look with a monochrome leather shirt or jacket on top, and pointy leather boots.

      • Most real animal leather pants are recommended to be cleaned by a leather specialist. Due to the delicate nature of animal leather they must be cleaned professionally or spot cleaned with a damp cloth.

Unless otherwise stated (usually for faux leather pants), never throw them in the washing machine.

Ted Lasso Season 3: Everything We Know So Far

Ted Lasso may be well into its second season, but fans shouldn’t fret: another installment of the Apple TV+ sports comedy is already in the works. The news doesn’t come as a huge surprise considering the sweeping success the show has seen so far. In case you forgot, it became the most-nominated freshman comedy in Emmy Award history with a whopping 20 nods, and its second-season debut broke records for Apple. It’s no wonder AFC Richmond is headed back to the pitch.

Starring and co-created by Jason Sudeikis, Ted Lasso follows the titular American football coach as he’s tapped to manage a British football (as in soccer) club. While the ridiculous move is first intended as a scheme by the team’s owner to get back at her cheating husband, Ted somehow charms his way through the whole institution. Season 2 dives further into the lives of Lasso, his colleagues, and his team, and how they cope with mental health.

Here’s what to know about Lasso’s next chapter.

When does Ted Lasso season 3 come out?

There’s no release date yet, but Apple is planning for a premiere in summer 2022, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The writer’s room reportedly began on September 13 and production is scheduled to start in January.

Ted Lasso was renewed for a third season back in October 2020, long before the second season even premiered. Just months prior, in August, it debuted on the streamer and became Apple’s number-one comedy across all top 50 countries, Deadline reports.

Hold on—will this be the last season?

We hope not, but Sudeikis did have plans for a three-season arc. “The story that’s being told—that three-season arc—is one that I see, know, and understood,” he told Entertainment Weekly in June 2021. “I’m glad that they are willing to pay for those three seasons. As far as what happens after that, who knows? I don’t know.”

Co-creator, writer, and star Brendan Hunt chimed in, saying, “I think we’ve always meant it to be three seasons. I think it would be pretty cool if, in the face of how much everyone likes this show, that we stick to our guns and really just do three seasons.” But he did note that no one on the show expected it to become as big of a hit as it did. That said, he still defers to Sudeikis when it comes to taking Ted Lasso beyond season 3. “I will say that, whatever he decides, I will happily abide.”

On a similar note, executive producer Bill Lawrence is “hopeful there’s more Ted Lasso stories to tell after three seasons.”

Who’s in the cast?

While Apple hasn’t officially confirmed who will be back for season 3, insiders told The Hollywood Reporter that Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca), Brett Goldstein (Roy), Juno Temple (Keeley), and Hunt (Coach Beard) are negotiating salaries for season 3. And, of course, Sudeikis would pick up the whistle once again.

Beauty Products You Need To Get Your Hands On For Pride Month

From your lashes and lips to your fingertips, show your true colours with the boldest pride-inspired collection from Quo Beauty

The meaning behind makeup has continued to expand as the beauty space has taken off over the last decade. Many turn to it to bring out their natural features, others use it as a tool to make a powerful statement, and some express their identity through its colours and textures. Whichever way you choose, it’s a transformative medium and every June, as we celebrate love, members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community breathe life into this form of storytelling.

This year, Canada’s very own iconic beauty destination, Shoppers Drug Mart, is encouraging Canadians everywhere to “Get loud for Pride!” with the launch of their limited-edition Quo Beauty Pride Collection, with a portion of proceeds supporting Pflag Canada—a local organization committed to helping Canadians navigate their sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. With a new assortment of Pride-inspired makeup and accessories—from vibrant eye, lip and nail colours to rainbow-themed makeup brushes, lashes, jewelry and accessories—the 2022 Pride lineup is one of Quo Beauty’s biggest and boldest collections. The cherry on top? The entire collection comes with minimal packaging and is vegan, cruelty-free and PETA-certified.

What better way to up the glam factor than a partnership with Canadian drag icon and TV star, Icesis Couture?

“Bright, vibrant colours are essential for creating fabulous Pride looks. This year, I’m turning to my new favourite eyeliners and eyeshadows from the Quo Beauty Pride Collection,” says Icesis. “Pride Month is a great time to think outside the makeup bag and use beauty products more creatively, like experimenting with liquid liners to create bold graphic looks.”

Inspired, yet? Whether you want to recreate Icesis’ look or come up with your own, we sat with Shoppers Beauty Pro, Dee Sikora, to get the tea on this collection and how you can slay your way through Pride this year.

This must-have eye palette delivers rich pigments and a vibrant range of 12 colours that will leave you beaming with pride. “This is a great palette for artful experimentation and offers easy ways to add a pop of colour for someone who’s just starting to play with makeup,” shares Dee.

With a fine felt tip and steady flow of bright and colourful liners, you can truly wing it your way and explore colour as a form of self-expression through unconventional looks with the Quo Beauty Heart Liquid Liners. Hot tip from Dee: “Try pairing your eyeshadow with a contrasting eyeliner. For bolder looks, apply multiple shades of liquid eyeliner and connect the lines to create extended or layered wing effects.”

A full-coverage, transfer-free matte liquid lipstick is key for an alluring pout this season, and this lipstick range is an easy way to add instant bursts of colour to your lips and even your face. “Pair your favourite shades to create an ombre lip effect,” shares Dee. “And you can take your kissable look on the go by simply popping one or more of these into your purse, fanny pack or pocket for on-the-go touch-ups.”

Cruelty-free and made with 100 per cent synthetic fibres, this set gives you five essential brushes that offer high-performance application. Perfect for anyone, Dee shares that “Quo Beauty brushes are affordable and accessible with quality that professionals enjoy, but also easy for a beginner to use.”

Whether you’re rushing off to a Pride party or if you just don’t have the patience to sit through all the drying stages that come with an extensive nail art look, quick-drying polish is the people’s champ. Dee shares that this range of polishes is “another easy way to express yourself by creating colourful nail looks.” They suggest starting with a solid or clear base and then getting “loud by adding multi-coloured dots or painting each tip a different colour.”

The 20 Best Men’s Fragrances & Colognes Of All Time

There are hundreds of great men’s fragrances, but truly iconic ones are a sniff out of the ordinary. Among all the amazing eaus, there are probably fewer than 50 (in fact, there are 20, according to this list) that have survived fads and fashions to earn their place in the olfactory hall of fame. These lucky lads are deemed some of the best men’s cologne of all time.

“Men often judge fragrances in the way they do cars,” says celebrated perfumer Azzi Glasser. “They want sophistication, but demand reliability and performance too.” In other words, while fancy flacons and big-budget marketing campaigns make an impact, ultimately, a men’s perfume survives because they keep coming back for another sniff.

So, whether you’re a fragrance fresher looking for your first signature scent, a cologne collector wanting to add to your stash or a significant other in search of the perfect gift, you could do a lot worse than to start with one of these — yes, we’re calling it — best men’s fragrances of all time.

The Best Men’s Fragrances & Colognes Of All Time

1. Tom Ford Oud Wood

Fragrance Type: Sensual & Smoky

Tom Ford’s first foray into the world of rich, smoky oud came while the designer was working on M7 for Yves Saint Laurent – a critically-acclaimed fragrance that helped kick-start the trend for oud in the UK. Less overpowering and sexier than others in the market, this one under Ford’s own label is warm, masculine and has depth — everything you want from a woody nighttime scent. It’s hailed by some as the best men’s cologne of all time, so it earned a spot on our list.

2. Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male

Fragrance Type: Warm & Woody

Taking a chance on young and relatively inexperienced perfumer Francis Kurkdjian — now one of the world’s most acclaimed noses — French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier came up with one of the most iconic men’s fragrances (and bottles) of all time. Heady and seductive, with notes of lavender, mint, sandalwood and vanilla, it’s the perfect evening fragrance. “The scent of a generation, Le Male is the defining smell of metrosexual man and still smells as good today as it did then,” says Dunkley.

3. Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey

Fragrance Type: Citrusy & Spicy

“Designer Issey Miyake famously hated perfume and wanted to create something that smelt like water falling on clean skin,” says Lizzie Ostrom, author of Perfume: A Century Of Scents. “L’Eau D’Issey offers a thirst-quenching evocation of watery fruits and is famous for its bold use of calone.” Cool and refined, it’s the kind of men’s fragrance you’d wear with a fine gauge roll neck. This daytime scent can easily be transitioned to night thanks to the lower notes of amber and woods.

4. Calvin Klein CK One

Fragrance Type: Citrusy, Floral & Woody

It’s impossible to compile a list of market-disrupting male perfumes from the nineties without mentioning CK One and the androgynous young waifs who advertised it. “It offered the prospect of joining a tribe,” says Ostrom of the universally appealing citrus-but-floral-but-woody scent. “Everyone had become so accustomed to the division of ‘pour homme’ and ‘pour femme’ that a ‘pour both’ perfume seemed daring and terribly modern.” Wear it anytime, anywhere, on anyone.

5. Aramis

Fragrance Type: Woody & Spicy

Over 50 years old, the longevity of Aramis as a brand is matched only by its longevity on the skin. A rich and spicy ‘chypre’ — a family of perfumes comprising fresh, citrus notes with deep woody or mossy hints — its intense sensuality makes it a fragrance strictly for grown-ups. “Though it’s inspired a myriad of masculine creations over the years, no one has created a better version of it,” says Dove. It’s good enough to be your everyday scent, easily transitioning from day to night.

6. Paco Rabanne 1 Million

Fragrance Type: Sensual & Woody

Love it or loathe it, Paco Rabanne 1 Million is a men’s fragrance phenomenon, with a bottle sold every five seconds. Now in its tenth year as a best-seller (a herculean feat in fragrance terms), this big, ballsy evening scent features a roll call of sensual notes — from narcotic rose and seductive amber to edible cinnamon and kinky leather. Fragrance experts are divided on how good a scent it truly is, but all are in awe of its incredible success.

7. Acqua Di Parma Colonia

Fragrance Type: Fresh & Citrusy

Subtle and deliciously fresh, Acqua di Parma Colonia may date back to 1916, but like a crisp Oxford shirt, it’s the very definition of a timeless classic. The art deco bottle echoes the fragrance’s deceptive simplicity, characterized by top notes of citrus, a complex heart and an understatedly sensual woody base. A better daytime scent you’ll be hard-pushed to find.

8. Tom Ford Neroli Portofino

Fragrance Type: Fresh & Floral

The star of Tom Ford’s fragrance line, Neroli Portofino’s success lies in its ability to capture a summer’s day in the Italian Rivera and bottle it for use on a chilly day anywhere from Richmond to Reykjavík. “It takes a lot of classic materials [like Sicilian lemon, bergamot, lavender and amber] and combines them with interesting modern synthetics to create a contemporary take on a traditional masculine cologne,” says Dove. The fact that it looks handsome on the dresser is simply a bonus.

9. Davidoff Cool Water

Fragrance Type: Cool & Aquatic

One of the most famous aquatic fragrances, this classic from 1988 heralded a new (ahem) wave of fresh scents that swapped citrus notes for pine, mint and a sense of the sea. “Cool Water was a revolution in masculine perfumery,” says Dove. “It became one of the most influential and successful masculine fragrances of all time — and the blueprint for many imitations to this day.” This sea salt, fresh fragrance is a great summertime scent, as the name implies.

11. Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit De L’Homme

Fragrance Type: Woody & Floral

In the same way many great songs have multiple writers, three well-known noses (Anne Flipo, Pierre Wargnye and Dominique Ropion) worked on this contemporary classic from Yves Saint Laurent. 12. Dior Eau Sauvage

Fragrance Type: Citrusy & Floral

Released in 1966, Dior’s citrus-heavy Eau Sauvage was the first fragrance to use hedione – an ingredient with a jasmine aroma that scientists later discovered stimulates the brain’s release of sex hormones. More than 50 years on, it’s still considered one of the best men’s fragrances. It works well for night and day, a real versatile cologne in the bunch.

13. Versace Eros

Fragrance Type: Woody & Sweet

It took five years for Italian fashion behemoth Versace to come up with this punchy, in-your-face concoction of fresh, woody notes, underpinned by a combination of green apple and mint. But as the positive reviews show, it was worth the wait. “Eros is truly the DNA of the house of Versace,” said Donatella at the time of its launch. Smell it and see how true that is. This light, fresh scent is ideal for any occasion.

16. Dior Homme

Fragrance Type: Floral & Musky

Challenging traditional notions of what a men’s fragrance should smell like, this daring, floral-heavy confection is the polar opposite of most mass-market offerings. “Decidedly feminine in style, the smooth, powdery iris is warmed with lavender to create a delicate, yet suave scent that celebrates the softer side of being a man,” says award-winning fragrance expert Thomas Dunkley, founder of The Candy Perfume Boy blog.

17. Caron Pour Un Homme

Fragrance Type: Floral & Woody

Synonymous with a simpler, more gentlemanly time, Caron’s legendary lavender-based formulation from 1934 may be out of sync with the times, but it’s still widely regarded as one of the best men’s fragrances. The addition of vanilla, musky amber and cedarwood prevents it from smelling like your nan’s knicker drawer, and it’s one of Tom Ford’s favorite fragrances, so it can’t be bad.

Fragrance Type: Sweet & Fresh

Released at a time when masculinity was in a state of flux, L’Homme Prada intentionally pits traditional masculine fougère notes like geranium and neroli against sweet, powdery iris – a note more commonly associated with female fragrances. The tension which results makes this a thoroughly modern scent that’s quirky but sexy.

19. Old Spice

Fragrance Type: Spicy & Floral

Easily one of the most iconic men’s fragrances of all time, and still a steady seller around the globe, the origins of Old Spice lie in DIY Bay Rum scents invented by pirates. Spicy but floral, its safe, good-for-dads reputation is what has led to it its longevity. “It’s precisely by being Mr. Average that Old Spice has kept its grip on the public imagination,” says Ostrom. “If it were ever discontinued, there would be a public outcry.” You can’t go wrong with this safe scent that is one of the best men’s fragrances of all time.

Fragrance Type: Fresh & Citrusy

Like Britpop, Armani’s most famous formulation might have had its heyday in the nineties, but this light-yet-sensual best-seller from 1996 remains one of the best men’s fragrances around thanks to its freshness and sheer versatility. If you’re used to vanilla-heavy scents or oud fragrances, it’ll come as a breath of (sea spray-infused) fresh air. A great daytime scent, you can wear this one to the office without worrying about suffocating your desk mates.

How To Choose The Right Fragrance For You

Counter assistants can help you; friends can help you; even disapproving looks from passersby can give a steer, but ultimately a man’s relationship with fragrance is so personal that only you can choose the right one for your personality. As with finding the perfect partner, it’s a process that involves patience, experimentation, and, yes, a few regrettable flings. Helpfully, according to James Craven, a perfume archivist at London’s oldest independent perfumery, Les Senteurs, there are a few things that can help make the search easier.

Fit For Purpose

Cologne, like clothing, is largely contextual, working best when it perfectly suits the occasion. A light, citrus fragrance is perfect for work or warmer weather, while a black tie event demands something heavier and more complex. For a hot date, you’ll want to pull out all the stops with something earthy, sexy, and musky.

Know Your Notes

In the same way, it’s possible to blag your way through a wine list once you know about grapes, narrowing the field with fragrances is easier with a little prior research around notes, especially when looking for a scent with stamina. “Good lasters include tonka bean, tuberose, vanilla, amber, civet, and musk; while spices, woods, and resins like myrrh, frankincense, and benzoin are tenacious too,” says Craven. Being able to decipher which notes make up your current favorite scents can also help you seek out further ones you’re likely to love in the future.

Don’t Rush Things

You know what they say: act in haste, repent at leisure — something that’s especially true of fragrance, which can smell entirely different on a piece of card in a shop (or on someone else) than on you. So be patient. “Always test scents on your skin and allow yourself time to discover what suits you and what other people respond to,” says Tony Glenville, author of Top To Toe: The Modern Man’s Guide To Grooming. This is because top notes reveal themselves in seconds, but base notes like sandalwood take several hours to emerge properly.

Stay Hydrated

How long a fragrance sticks around depends on many factors, not least its strength and the notes it features, but there is one simple thing you can do to maximize its staying power no matter what. According to Dove, scents tend to last longer on well-hydrated skin, so in addition to drinking plenty of water, lather on a fragrance-free body moisturizer after showering to prep skin and eek out your olfactory efforts.

Apply Right

It’s a grooming mistake as old as fragrance itself: apply too much and you’ll leave everyone within a mile radius feeling like they’ve huffed glue. “To get the best effect, fragrance should be applied over the skin as a light mist,” says Dove, who warns against spraying too close to the skin as this can result in an overly-concentrated puddle. “Alternatively, apply some to the palm of the hand before wiping it over the upper body as this will help the fragrance affix to the skin better.” As for how much, Debrett’s Guide For The Modern Gentleman suggests applying no more than two to three squirts. None of them down your underwear.

Fragrance FAQs

What men’s fragrance do women like?

Women’s noses vary as much as men’s do, so we regret to inform you there is no one-size-fits-all. One of the most popular men’s fragrances for women is reportedly Dior Sauvage, which naturally made our list. Its combination of vanilla, bergamot and lavender drive women mad, which is reason enough for us to stock up.

What is the best affordable fragrance for men?

Cologne is long-lasting and we don’t recommend skimping, but there are some affordable fragrance options that don’t smell like feet. We put together a list of the best cheap colognes to guide you. Some of our favorites are Tabac Original (under $15) and 4711 Cologne (under $30), which is featured on this list.

What is the best-smelling men’s cologne?

That all depends on what your sniffer responds to. We know, we know, it’s vague. As with other areas of style, the key is to follow your heart; not the crowd. “Shop on your own, when you are in the mood and don’t force things,” says Craven. “Wait for a fragrance that stirs and excites you. Scent is our last raw link with our animal origins, so search for it in an animal way. Trust your feelings and instinct.” Bottom line: follow your nose.

How can I choose the right fragrance?

Craven suggests a little self-analysis. “If you don’t think about the inner you, you’ll never find the perfect signature scent.” It sounds odd to consider factors such as what textures and colors you prefer, but these are often reflected in your fragrance taste. For example, smoky ouds resemble dark colors whereas light, floral notes evoke brighter ideas.

LeBron James Joins the Ranks of Athletes Calling For Brittney Griner’s Release

LOS ANGELES, CA - APRIL 01: LeBron James #6 of the Los Angeles Lakers reacts in the closing seconds of the game against the New Orleans Pelicans at Crypto.com Arena on April 1, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. The Pelicans won 114-111. WNBA basketball player Brittney Griner has been stuck in Russia since February. She was detained in an airport after Russian officials claimed they found vape cartridges containing hash oil (from cannabis, which is illegal in Russia) in her luggage. The US State Department has ruled that she’s been wrongfully detained, meaning they’ll more aggressively pursue negotiating her release, according to the Associated Press — but so far, there’s been no luck.

So basketball star LeBron James is standing up to try to do something about it.

On June 5, James took to Twitter to call for Griner’s release. “We need to come together and help do whatever we possibly can to bring BG home quickly and safely!!” he wrote. “Our voice as athletes is stronger together.” He also tagged @uninterrupted, the athlete empowerment brand he cofounded, and included a hashtag for and materials from the campaign #WeAreBG, which is dedicated to advocating for Griner’s release.

The campaign, which is backed by the WNBA Union and the activism group Athletes for Impact, is encouraging people to get involved by signing a Change.org petition; attending in-person or virtual rallies; posting to social media with the #WeAreBG hashtag; and writing, calling, and tagging White House officials and government representatives to push them to do something to facilitate Griner’s release. The brand is also selling pins and apparel with the #WeAreBG logo; the Celtics were already seen sporting the shirts this weekend in support of Griner.

Many coaches, athletes, and fans have been vocal about Griner’s release, but James — with his 51.4 million Twitter followers — using his platform to draw attention brings the cause to a whole new level. (His tweet alone already has 2.6K retweets and 15.3K likes.)

“Like many athletes competing in the WNBA, Griner — a two-time Olympic gold medalist — plays abroad during the WNBA offseason for the love of the sport, but also in exchange for substantially bigger contracts, which are not available to women’s basketball players in the U.S.,” reads the #WeAreBG website. “Pay inequity has led to Brittney Griner’s wrongful detention in Russia, where she is being used as a political pawn.”

“She is consistently denied consular access and is facing inhumane conditions, being denied communication with her friends, family and loved ones,” the site continues. “As a decorated Olympian and member of an elite global sport community, Brittney’s detention must be resolved out of respect for the safety of all athletes traveling to compete internationally and the sanctity of sport. It is imperative that the U.S. government immediately address this human rights issue and do whatever is necessary to return Brittney home quickly and safely.”

With Russia’s war in Ukraine escalating during Griner’s detainment, the situation is certainly complicated — but here’s hoping she’s back on US soil soon.

Bowen Yang Is Ready for a Hot Boy Summer

thirst trap

Damn, I’m parched. I know you are too. That’s why in ELLE.com’s Thirst Trap series, we ask the hard questions like “Why are you so gorgeous?” and “What’s it like being an oasis in the desert of life?” Drink up! You’re welcome.

Bowen Yang is bracing himself for a hot boy summer. He’s just wrapped a breakout season on SNL, and now headlines the buzzy new movie Fire Island, a gay rom-com based on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Yang is also the new face of Absolut’s Out & Open campaign, which centers independent gay and lesbian bars, and helps fund the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) to ensure social spaces for queer communities continue to thrive.

“The first time I walked by a gay bar, I knew there was something special happening there, even before I could walk in,” Yang tells ELLE.com. (He penned a love letter to that bar, a famous downtown New York City dive called Eastern Bloc, as part of his campaign duties.) “I didn’t even how to order a drink,” he laughs. “But I knew that place had my back. We’ve gotta make sure we keep them open so the next generation can be awkward and amazed and supported, too.”

Here’s the 31-year-old’s advice for getting a bartender’s attention, holding your head high in a day job, and how to get invited to an SNL after-party.

Do you remember the first gay bar you ever went to?

Oh, of course. I had come to New York to go to NYU. I was living with my sister at the time, and I would walk past this bar called Eastern Bloc in the East Village. It had this fascinating brutalist aesthetic to it, and, you know, even from afar, I could tell that it was a place where people could be themselves, whatever that meant.

So you snuck in when you were 18…

Would you believe, I really did not have a fake [ID] in New York? I feel like I deserve the key to the city for that! But once I was 21, I explored alllll the bars…but Eastern Bloc never left my heart, you know? Now we’re really mourning the closures of these places, so I think there’s something really special about what Absolut is doing. They’re making these stories in queer settings, and the more people watch, the more we can communally help LGBTQ+ bars and businesses exist in the future.

What was your first drink order?

Like whiskey sours and fuzzy navels? I know, like really, really amateur hour stuff. But then once I like felt somewhat sophisticated and sort of cultured, I would do an Absolut vodka martini with a twist. That was my level-up drink.

What’s your best advice for getting a bartender’s attention, especially during a crowded Pride party?

I have no advice to offer, because, bartenders? They still be ignoring me.

No! Surely now that you’re famous, you get served first?

I don’t know! I think this is the beautiful thing about a gay bar—there’s something democratizing about it. Unless you’re like…who would I say? Like, Matthew Bomer. Unless you’re him, or you look like you were pulled out of Calvin Klein ad or something. Unless it’s like that, my advice is to just maintain eye contact, like really lean in and just, like, mug them down with your mug. The other thing you can do is the double elbow wing. Lean in with both elbows on the bar like you’re about to tell a campfire story. That’s how they know you’re ready.

Drinking before a comedy performance, yes or no?

I haven’t recently. But every now and then, on Tuesday nights [during SNL rehearsals], sometimes you are whisked away to the host’s dinner, which is when some cast members and Lorne [Michaels] and some of the producers eat with the host. And sometimes, if you’re a cast member and you still have sketches in the mix, you’re expected to go back to work and write until the witching hour. In that case, I’ll have an espresso martini because I can get back to work! It’s a super functional cocktail.

Did you get to drink with Kim Kardashian when she hosted?

I did! I got a drink with Kim… Actually, when I ordered my drink [at the after-party], I was a little bummed out because my sketch with her had gotten cut. They put it on the internet the day after, and it had a life of its own, which I can appreciate. But at the time, I was a little mopey. And so I ordered, like, a bourbon on the rocks. And then I hear a voice from behind me: “What are you drinking? Drink champagne with me!” And I turned around from the bar, and it was Khloé Kardashian, being like, “That’s so sad! You’re drinking bourbon on the rocks? Drink champagne!” And I was like, “Whatever you say, Khloé! I will do whatever you say.” So I got called out for my drink order, which I love. And then proceeded to drink a little flutes of champagne.

True or false: You worked at One King’s Lane before landing SNL.

I did! I did for five years!

Do you have advice for people who are still working a day job? How do you make space for your creative pursuits when you’re also working your butt off to pay the bills?

I do have advice, but it’s nothing beyond the general, “KEEP DOING IT.” There really is no secret besides tenacity. Keep at it, and absolve yourself of the guilt that you feel around not dedicating more time to the day job or not dedicating enough time to the passion project. Just try to get rid of the guilt as much as possible from either side. I mean, New York in general is all about, “do something to do something else.” That’s the whole point. I remember watching Shonda Rhimes’s Dartmouth commencement speech, and that was the whole point of it. She was like, “Do something now so you can do something later.” Nobody wants to start out like that, but that’s exactly how you start out!

Your Instagram account is @FayeDunaway. Has the real Faye Dunaway said anything about it?

I have it on good authority that, yes, she has reached out to people at SNL hoping to confront me on-air. That tells me she’s aware of the handle, and who I am… And it would all be in good fun, of course, but I mean, whatever the equivalent mental version of a Marvel movie workout is, I need it. I gotta fortify my mind for that encounter… I mean, sharing a space with Faye Dunaway, mentally? She’s incredible. She’s an icon. So I would really need to prepare.

DJ Karim Olen Ash Shares His Pride Playlist

Photography courtesy of Karim Olen Ash

Plus, his best post-party beauty tip.

A DJ and producer with a killer sense of style, Karim Olen Ash is a rising Canadian star that should most definitely be on your radar. Here, the multihyphenate shares his playlist for Pride and his other top tips to get the most out of the month.

What’s been your most memorable Pride experience?

In 2019, I was DJing at Electric Island during Pride and I had one of those realizations where I was like, ‘Wow, I’m an artist.’ I could also just feel the love in the crowd. To see straight and queer people all there for the music and harmoniously dancing was beautiful.

I don’t really have a specific outfit, but I love to gender bend and wear clothes that make me feel powerful and elegant. My staples are a nice pair of shades, chunky sneakers and a hat to keep the sun off my face.

Any beauty tips for the morning after a night out?

Hydrate! Make sure you drink enough water — not just after you get home but also during the night and the next day. And wear sunscreen. I can’t stress enough how much that’s changed my skin.

What separates a good DJ from a great DJ?

Having a unique perspective and confidence. I’ve been DJing for about 10 years, and I value voices that have not been heard or put on a platform before, including a lot of female, queer and BIPOC artists who haven’t been able to play on bigger stages.

What does Pride mean to you?

It’s really about being unapologetically myself and embracing the community. But it’s also important to remember all the sacrifices and hardships we’ve gone through to get to where we are today and to push for an even better future.

What are five songs on your 2022 Pride playlist?

“The Boss” by Diana Ross
“The Ha Dance” by Masters at Work
“C*nty” by Kevin Aviance
“Music is the Answer” by Celeda and Danny Tenaglia
“Fly Life” by Basement Jaxx

12 Of The Best Men’s Camo Pants You Can Actually See (2022 Edition)

While men’s camo pants invoke thoughts of war, military, hunting, and other quintessential manly activities, camouflage is also making quite the splash in men’s high fashion. Once a niche look that was reserved for outdoorsy events, jokes about not being able to see someone or Halloween festivities, men’s camo pants are now a staple in fashion-conscious man’s wardrobe.

Camouflage has been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years (at least that’s how we feel), with the print that we think of most evolving from 19th-century modern war tactics during World War I. While the American military only made camo their official uniform in the 1980s, camo as a high-end fashion piece can be dated back to when it graced the pages of Vogue in the 1940s.

Unfortunately, if you’re not careful, incorporating camouflage pants into your wardrobe can go one of two ways: 1.) looking uncomfortable, out of pocket, and like you’re trying too hard or 2.) looking effortlessly cool and incredibly fashion-forward.

Luckily, we compiled the best men’s camo pants for you to choose from in a range of styles, fits, and camo prints. Not only does this list include iconic workwear brands, they also include the high-end fashion houses that have dabbled in this distinctive print, so you have a variety of pants to choose from.

Men's Camo Pants
@jaredacquaro / Instagram

Whether you’re looking for relaxed joggers or structured fits that you could dress up for a night out, this list has you covered at all price points: super cheap and not so cheap, but not too wildly expensive.

Keep reading for the best men’s camo pants to buy today.

Our Top Picks

Since forming this division in 1989, Carhartt Work In Progress (WIP) has continued the legacy of Hamilton Carhartt of evolving workwear in the fashion realm, while still remaining true to the brand origins. Their straight leg, Aviation Camo Cargo trouser is no exception. Perfect for the man who loves to mix fashion with utility, these men’s camo pants will keep you moving in style.

Made from a camouflage-print cotton-twill, these pants are equipped with practical pockets and drawstring cuffs to help adjust the fit, even though the fit is true to size with its straight leg and mid-rise waist. A stand-out feature of these pants? The camouflage print. Instead of the basic print pattern we’re used to seeing, Carhartt gets artistic, creating a stand-out piece that will be the center of any outfit.

That said, make sure to pair these pants with a solid-colored top, either beige, white, or black. If you can, your top and your jacket should match to keep the outfit neutral so that the pants can shine. If you’re using the pants for an outdoor event, pair them with boots. If you’re just going out on the town, a pair of chucks may just do the trick.

Sizes: UK/US 30-38 | Material: 100% Cotton | Pattern: Camo | Care: Machine wash

While Urban Outfitters isn’t truly a vintage store, these men’s camo pants are indeed vintage, making these the perfect pair for the man who likes his clothes to be – and feel – authentic. Each pair of these pants are unique also, meaning what you see may not necessarily be what you get. While this may be daunting, it means that you will have a clothing staple that’s wholly unique and that you can style as you please.

Since these pants are on the baggier side, we recommend pairing them with a solid-colored crew neck or hoodie and a pair of SB dunks or skater sneakers. These pants pair best in a casual setting and while you can always dress up anything, keeping this outfit more low key for running errands, hanging out, or even a casual date.

Sizes: S-L | Material: Cotton, Polyester | Pattern: Camo | Care: Machine wash

See what we did there? We would be remiss to skip at least one pair of classic cargo shorts that have made camouflage what it is. And, we know, we know – Abercrombie doesn’t exactly come to mind when we talk about men’s fashion. But the brand has really made a shift in the past few years, and these camo shorts are ideal for the man who wants to give camo a try, but not necessarily go all in yet (see what we did again?)

With a very classic camo print – if you blink you might miss it – these shorts are made of to-be-expected cotton. They are perfect for your (semi) daily mental-health walk or just running around town.

If you’re working (or walking) out, pair them with a breathable T-shirt or compression shirt and your sneakers. If you’re wearing them out, dress them up a bit with a jean jacket, white t-shirt and your shiny, non-workout sneakers, and a pair of sunnies.

Sizes: 26-36W | Material: 100% Cotton | Pattern: Camo | Care: Machine wash cold

If the California streetwear brand is doing camo, you should be doing camo. At the forefront of literally every men’s fashion trend, Stussy knows what they are doing and wouldn’t lead you astray.

Sitting in the comfortable balance between workwear and utility wear (and even streetwear), these men’s camo pants are made from cotton canvas and feature an all-over camo print, five pockets, reinforced knees, and a utilitarian hammer loop. So whether you’re running around, skating, or just strolling around, these pants will be both fashionable and practical.

They also stand out because of their more unique camo print, making it unlike other men’s camo pants on the market. This also means they will be the main focal point of your outfit. Keep it casual with a black tee, a black leather jacket, and black sneakers for an edgy and cool look.

Sizes: 30”-36” | Material: 100% Cotton canvas | Pattern: Camo | Care: Machine wash

For the man who wants a daily take on historical clothing, look no further than Nigel Cabourn. With most of the designs inspired by history and vintage military aesthetics, these camo pleated chinos are no different. Inspired by 1930’s cricket pants with a military twist, they are perfect to be dressed up, dressed down, and everything in between.

Made from camo-covered cotton that is designed to fade over time, these pants will be a staple for years to come. Also, since they are chinos, you can dress them up for dressier events – including dates, happy hours, and if your office is low key, even for work.

If you want to go with a dressier vibe, we suggest a brown turtleneck and brown boots. If it’s cold add a beige fleece vest. Wearing colors like cream, beige, and brown will suit these pants based on the type of camouflage print they sport. Also with the fact that it will fade, you want to keep the rest of the outfit in the same colorway to avoid washing it out.

 Sizes: 30” – 32”  | Material: 100% Cotton | Pattern: Camo | Care: Machine wash

Not all men’s camo pants need to be sturdy for the outdoors. For the men who enjoy staying in most of the week but still want to partake in the camo pant trend, the L.L. Bean fleece men’s camo pants are perfect for cozy nights in cooking, watching t.v., enjoying a really great book – or scrolling for hours on social media.

With a cooler version of camouflage – think grays instead of beiges – these will definitely fit better in your winter indoor wardrobe. The fact that it is made of fleece also makes it the perfect staple for snow days.

Of course, we don’t recommend you wear this out on the town. Instead, keep it cozy-casual with a henley top, crew neck sweater, or a hoodie (and a pair of comfy slippers) for those days you just can’t imagine going outside.

Sizes: S – XXL  | Material: 90% Recycled Polyester/ 10% Jersey Polyester | Pattern: Hunter Heath Camo | Care: Machine wash and dry

We love when vintage meets modern and trendy – and if you’re like us, then these Todd Synder Desert Camo Chinos will have you opening your wallet to make the next sale. While one of the pricier men’s camo pants on this list, it will definitely be worth it when these pants continue to wow for years to come.

The fabric for these pants are imported from Japan, consisting of special cotton with a dry, soft hand feel. Coming in a straight fit with design details that include a melamine button fly that only enhances the military vibes, these pants are a great way to add some flair to your outfit.

You can style these pants in a few ways. From a crisp oxford shirt and blazer, an oversized t-shirt and skater sneakers, or a crew neck sweatshirt and boots, you can have fun with these pants. You could also take it positively military and wear the matching desert camo long sleeve from Todd Synder.

Sizes: 30 – 36  | Material: 100% Cotton | Pattern: Dessert Camo | Care: Machine wash

While camo cargo pants are leading the charge for this trend, camo joggers are clearly the underdog. And these joggers from the underdog in the fashion world, GAP, are perfect for the man who wants some elevated athleisure in his life. GAP is great for fashion staples and everyday elevated basics, and at this price – you can’t go wrong buying them just to see if they make an impact.

Made with their Gapflex technology for extra flexibility, total comfort, and a perfect fit, each pair of these joggers are engineered to be your durable, on-the-go pants that will keep you comfortable no matter what life may throw at you.

Pair these joggers with a white T-shirt and denim jacket for a cool look, or make it more athletic with a long sleeve T-shirt and sneakers. You could also take a bit of a daring route and pair it with a beige or cream-colored cardigan and slips for a real laid-back but polished look.

Sizes: XS – XXL  | Material: 98% Cotton, 2% Spandex | Pattern: Camo | Care: Machine wash

Levi’s is definitely the king when it comes to denim, but when they also experiment with camo chinos, they rise to the top. For the man who wants something a bit different but not totally out there, try these XX Camo chinos.

With their regular straight leg fit and camouflage print, this pair also sports two cheeky embroidered patches to keep that child-like enthusiasm for life in your wardrobe. Levi’s also brings a difference in craftsmanship, using a soft twill that will keep your skin happy. Made with their take on the chino material, they’re softer, and over time, they take on a look and feel unique to you and goes with almost anything.

For these chinos, we recommend a layered look – or even a flannel – with sneakers. Accessorize with a beanie or sunnies for a chill, laid-back look.

Sizes: 29 – 36 | Material: 70% Cotton, 30% Hemp | Pattern: Camo | Care: Machine wash

Featuring a tapered fit and white/gray camo print, these pants are comfortable, stylish, utilitarian, and won’t put a huge dent in your wallet. Also flipping the print with a more unusual colorway opens up more possibilities for outfit choices and styles.

If you want to be safe (but still a bit risky because stains follow you everywhere), pair with a white hoodie and sneakers. If you want to get really unique, pair with a bright-colored top and white sneakers for a bold, eye-catching look.

Sizes: 32 – 36 | Material: Soft Twill | Pattern: Camo | Care: Machine wash

Known as fashion’s best kept “secret”, Boohoo Man combines cutting-edge design with an affordable price tag. So for all my hypebeasts, on-to-the-next trend men out there, this brand – and these lilac camo cargo pants – are for you.

What makes these pants wholly unique is the fact that instead of green, beige, or even white camouflage, Boohoo Man goes beyond the basics to give you a lilac camo. Who knew purple could look so tough? The straight-fit cargo pants also pack a lot of pockets and have a relaxed, comfortable fit that will keep you stylish and comfortable.

Unfortunately, since it’s SO unique, creating an outfit may prove difficult, especially if this is the only loud piece in your closet. Start off matching it with white neutrals to keep the focus on the pants and as you get comfier in your own skin, add other purple or lilac pieces – like a sweatshirt – to the mix.

Sizes: 28 – 36 | Material: 98% Cotton, 2% Elastane | Pattern: Camo | Care: Machine wash

Known for their preppy style and schoolboy charm, these men’s camo pants is a bit of a venture for this fashion house. Luckily, they did it right. For the man who usually dressed preppy but wants to shake things up, try these on for size.

Crafted from 100% cotton, Ralph Lauren covered these pants in military-inspired camo print, a plethora of pockets, and the brand’s utility polo brand patch on the back because of course they would.

Perfect when paired with a white T-shirt, leather jacket, and slicked-back hair, you can turn your otherwise preppy demeanor into the bad boy you’ve always wanted to be. Or keep some of your prep with an oxford and blazer and boots and give a hint of edginess with these pants. Either way, it’s a win.

Sizes: 30 – 36 | Material: 100% Cotton | Pattern: Camo | Care: Machine wash

What to look for in men’s camo pants

Fit

When choosing your men’s camo pants, the type of fit you want is important to keep in mind. Whether it’s a straight, jogger, tapered, or baggy fit – or a fit with lots and lots of pockets – whatever you choose will affect how you style it.

For example, a baggier fit will look best with sneakers (boots can make you appear a bit too military), while a straight fit will work best on a daily basis and can even be dressed up depending on the style.

Activity

Men’s camo pants aren’t just fashionable, they are also great for outdoor activities. The type of men’s camo pants you choose should also take into consideration what type of activity you plan to wear them for.

For example, a thicker material, multi-pocket cargo pants would be best for outdoor activities like hiking, riding, ATV driving, etc. Meanwhile, a lighter, cotton camo chino would work best for date night, casual hangouts, work, happy hours, etc.

Camo pattern & color

Lastly, the pattern and color of your camo can make a huge difference for your wardrobe. For example, if your wardrobe is made of lots of greens and beiges, then a green/beige vintage coloring and patterns would work best.

If you have a wardrobe that is multi-colored, a gray or white camo may work best. Also, depending on your vibe, some patterns can get a bit too military.

FAQ

    • A pair of pants of any material, but mostly canvas or cotton, that features a camouflage print. Camo pants have been around for thousands of years, but are best known for their use in modern-day militaries.

      • Depending on the material, color, and fit, there are many things you can wear with camo pants. T-shirts, leather jackets, boots, sneakers, blazers, etc are all commonly worn with men’s camo pants.

        • Camo pants definitely lean closer to the casual end of the spectrum, so a T-shirt, jean jacket, leather jacket and sneakers will usually do. However, if you want to dress it up, you can add a blazer and boots.

          • Sneakers and boots are usually the best shoes to wear with camo pants. However, if you’re daring, you could try a different shoe – it may just not look as great as it could.

Soccer Legend Mia Hamm Joins U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame Class of 2022

Almost two decades after her retirement, Mia Hamm will be formally inducted into the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame on June 24. Aside from an impressive career including three Olympic medals and two FIFA World Cup Championships, she is also known for propelling women’s sports ahead. Considering the US Soccer Federation’s recent announcement that men and women’s soccer players will receive equal pay through 2028, this seems like a very fitting year to honor a trailblazer in gender equality.

In 2000, Hamm cofounded America’s first professional women’s soccer league, the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA). In 2004, Hamm and her former teammate Michelle Akers were the only two women and Americans named to the FIFA 100, a list of the 125 greatest living soccer players, in honor of FIFA’s 100th anniversary. When she retired in 2004, she held the record for most career goals (of any gender). Nine years later, she was the first woman to be inducted into the World Football Hall of Fame.

Athletes and fans still recognize Hamm as a trailblazer in women’s history and soccer. On June 6, the United States Women’s Soccer Team announced her selection as a U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame inductee with high praise, writing, “🐐 headed to the hall! 🥇🥇,” echoing the common sentiment that she is in fact the greatest of all time.

Other legendary athletes like Lindsey Vonn, Michael Phelps, and Michelle Kwan will also be recognized in this year’s induction ceremony. The official ceremony is on Friday, June 24, at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs, CO.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Share New Photos of a Very Red-Headed Lilibet for 1st Birthday

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are ready to give the world another glimpse of their baby girl. Photographer Misan Harriman shared a new portrait of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s daughter taken in honor of her first birthday. Lili, like Archie, is very much a ginger with a head of red hair. “It was such a privilege to celebrate the 1st birthday of Lilibet with my family and hers!” Harriman wrote. “Joy and face painting all around ❤️🎂🎉”

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Meghan appears in a second photo, holding Lili.

Royal reporter Omid Scobie shared more details about Lili’s private first birthday party, which was held in the U.K. “For Lilibet’s first birthday, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan invited close friends and family for an ‘intimate backyard picnic’ at Frogmore Cottage, Windsor on Saturday,” Scobie wrote on Twitter. “Claire Ptak (who made the couple’s 2018 wedding cake) baked a special order for the party.”

An Archewell spokesperson confirmed party details to People, adding that close family friend Harriman was at the party and took the “candid, spontaneous photograph that the Duke and Duchess are pleased to share today.”

Meghan and Harry shared the first glimpse of Lili in their Christmas card. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have chosen to keep Lili and Archie largely out of the public eye. During their visit to the U.K., Meghan and Harry opted not to take Archie and Lili to any public events or around photographers. Instead, Lili met great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II in private on Thursday.

Drew Barrymore Shares Her Favorite $11 Hydrating Concealer for Brightening Dark Circles

  • Drew Barrymore shared the affordable creamy concealer she swears by to brighten dark under-eye circles.
  • She loves using the Flower Beauty Light Illusion Full Coverage Concealer, which is infused with unique blurring pigments to brighten dark spots.
  • “It just doesn’t crease, not even with powder,” Barrymore said in a recent Instagram post.

Drew Barrymore is an avid cosmetics lover—she loves makeup so much that she even created her own line, Flower Beauty. Lucky for us, she’s always willing to share her favorite products. From $10 mascaras to hydrating eye creams to moisturizing hair treatments, the 47-year-old only uses the best of the best, which is why we’re always keeping an eye out for her latest recommendations.

Her latest pick? The Flower Beauty Light Illusion Full Coverage Concealer.

    $10.49

In a recent Instagram reels post, Barrymore revealed she swears by the concealer to brighten and cover dark circles.

“This has been my absolute go-to for years,” Barrymore said in the video. “I want something that is really creamy but has a ton of coverage. I have dark circles and I’m going to just demonstrate what this bad boy can do.” She then applies the concealer directly to her under eyes using her fingers and then pats the product into her skin until it blends.

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

The award-winning smoothing concealer comes in 12 various shades ranging from cool to warm tones. Unlike many traditional concealers, this one is formulated with exclusive blurring pigments, which help to minimize the appearance of fine lines, signs of fatigue, and imperfections, according to the brand.

It’s also infused with hydrating ingredients like jojoba esters (to soothe the skin) and sunflower seed wax (to lock in moisture). The best part? The formula dries down to a nice soft-focus finish and doesn’t settle into fine lines.

“I tend to conceal with a little bit of a lighter layer than my shade because I’m looking for that illumination,” said Barrymore. “But there is great illumination in the creaminess of this product. It just doesn’t crease, not even with powder—it doesn’t crease.”

When it comes to concealers, experts recommend opting for formulas that will not only cover dark spots but also help to improve the skin. “Consider going with a concealer that also contains ingredients that can help your skin while it’s covered,” said Desireé Delia, a professional makeup artist based in New York City, in a previous interview for Prevention.

Ulta Beauty customers have also been loving the creamy concealer giving it a four-star rating and hundreds of stellar reviews.

“Make up for a 46-year-old is challenging at times. The concealer does an amazing job of feeling light, creaseless, and hydrating to the skin,” wrote one satisfied customer. “You can’t beat the price either! I would highly recommend it.”

“I’ve never been one for a ton of makeup so this concealer is perfect! It’s nice, light, and blends in perfectly! It doesn’t crease and gives you a nice all-day natural coverage on those dark circles,” added another reviewer.

Whether you’re in need of a new concealer or you simply want to see what the hype’s about, we recommend reaching for this Barrymore-approved pick. Shop a few more of her beauty must-haves, like the hydrating lip balm she loves for a moisturized pout, below.

The Depp v Heard Verdict Isn’t Really A Victory For Abuse Survivors

    Photography courtesy of Getty Images

    Here’s why.

The defamation lawsuit between ex-spouses Johnny Depp and Amber Heard came to an end on June 1, but the fallout from this case has just begun. The jury found both parties to be guilty of defamation, and awarded Depp $15 million in damages and Heard $2 million. It was a victory for Johnny Depp, but some argue the verdict was a loss for abuse survivors everywhere.

To recap: The jury found Heard defamed Depp in a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post, in which she did not actually name her ex-husband. The statements Depp claimed to be defamatory and false were: “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change”; “Two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out”; and “I had the rare vantage point of seeing, in real time, how institutions protect men accused of abuse.” (Heard had previously accused Depp of domestic violence in 2016 when she filed for a temporary restraining order against him.)

It’s worth noting that, in 2020, Depp lost a libel case in which he sued the British tabloid The Sun for publishing an article that referred to him as a “wife beater.” That case was before a judge only, who found the paper’s claims of Depp’s alleged abuse against Heard to be “substantially true.”  In the U.S., his defamation suit against Heard unfolded quite differently.

For the grueling six-week-long trial that drudged up emails, text messages and covert audio recordings to shed light on the short-lived marriage, the jury was not sequestered. And outside the Fairfax County coutroom, Depp was winning the support of the public as the #JusticeforJohnnyDepp movement grew in numbers.

Those supporters believe the Depp v Heard ruling to be a victory for male survivors of abuse. Following the verdict, Depp posted a statement to Instagram: “From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome…I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that.”

“It is hard to see how any abuse survivor, whatever their gender, would take comfort in this,” says Kim Hawkins, a Vancouver-based lawyer and executive director of Rise Women’s Legal Centre. “You have to remember this case wasn’t about providing support or protection to abuse survivors, it was about defamation…Depp wasn’t representing male abuse survivors as a group or fighting for their rights and recognition.”

In 2017, the #MeToo movement saw many people come forward and speak out about the abuse they faced in Hollywood, namely by powerful men. It was largely regarded as a cultural shift in the way we talk about and understand abuse. But five years later, the public spectacle surrounding this trial exposes how little progress has been made, says Winnipeg-based lawyer Paula Ethans. “This case shows us that #MeToo didn’t ‘go too far;’ #MeToo didn’t take us to where we as a society needed to go.”

amber heard in the coutroom of the depp v heard trial prior to the verdict
    Photography courtesy of Getty Images

For survivors of abuse, the trial may raise some red flags. For one, Ethans says the “entire lawsuit is an act of DARVO.” The acronym, standing for deny, attack, and reverse victim and offender, refers to when a person accused of abuse positions themselves as the victim.

“Heard said she was a survivor of abuse in a 2018 article — without even naming Depp — and his response was to deny; attack via lawsuit; and assume the role of victim by saying the harm done here was to his reputation,” she says.

The result of this tactic is victim blaming, which Hawkins says is already far too common in the legal system. “It’s not surprising that it happened, and it’s not new,” she explains. “But when a high-profile case like this plays out in the media, it helps to reinforce and normalize the strategy.

The case has also reinforced the fallacy of a “perfect victim:” a survivor who is submissive, weak and unflawed. Heard was decidedly flawed. Her testimonies of alleged abuse became a meme, her body language was scrutinized and her mental illness diagnosis was used to further paint her as the villain.

It’s not a stretch to say that the ramifications of this case could be felt in Canada. Right now, according to a 2022  Canadian Women’s Foundation survey, 23 per cent of people say intimate partner violence is none of their business if it doesn’t directly involve them.

“Such open vitriolic reactions may very well discourage survivors from speaking out in their own lives,” says Andrea Gunraj, vice president of public engagement at the Canadian Women’s Foundation. “And it might make people feel free to publicly blame, shame, and disparage people who are victimized and to abuse them further for speaking out in the first place.”

It’s tough to predict where exactly this trial leaves victims of abuse, because, in the court of public opinion, Depp won long before the verdict was ever read. For Ethans, the case should remind us of the age-old warning for survivors: beware. “Beware of speaking out, beware of facing your abuser,” she explains. “You might be ostracized, hated, crucified.”

We all want a redemption story — good triumphing over evil. But abuse is more complicated than that. It exists in a grey area, and that nuance was lost as social media made a spectacle of the case. As much as we might want to make a winner out of Johnny Depp, in reality, we all lost.

The Best 6 Beard Scissors To Help You Reach Beard Heaven (2022 Edition)

So you’ve set out on the hairy yet rewarding adventure of a full beard. Otherwise known as the peak of masculinity. Now all you need are the tools to make it possible. Maintaining a beard the right way isn’t easy, but don’t sweat the details. We’re here to help on your quest for badass (and healthy) chin and cheek plumage.

One of the first purchases for your arsenal should be beard scissors. Channeling your inner zen-master and thinking of your beard style as a bonsai tree might help. You don’t want to trim a bonsai tree with a chainsaw, right? Your answer should be no.

    Beard Scissors
    @copenhagengrooming / Instagram

If you need something better suited for more minor cuts, that’s what a great pair of beard scissors will get you. There’s a lot to consider when shopping for the best beard scissors, like shear length, tip type, and steel density. With all that in mind, we waded through the internet to find some of the best beard scissors on the market so you don’t have to.

    Our Top Picks

The team at Badass Beard Care is serious about ‘beardsmanship’ (yes, we made that up), as shown through the quality of their products. This company is all about bringing barber-level shears, among many other things, to amateurs like us. Sure, higher-grade steel exists, but they still won’t look much smoother than this black and gold finish. You’ll never be able tell the difference anyway.

These beard scissors have it all. Build quality, looks, and they’re just under 50$. They also have a hand-adjustable tension knob to control the scissors’ cut speed. Considering they’re more comparable to a $150-$200 pair, they’re a damn good deal.

Material: HRC 59-61 stainless steel | Blade Size: 5.25” | Features: Titanium coated, hand-adjustable tension knob, screw-on finger rest, also includes polishing cloth, scissor oil, and hard case

    What we like

    • Quality materials punch above their price
    • Works for both large and precision bearding tasks
    What we don’t like

    • What’s not to like?

These scissors have never heard the words “over-the-top,” and we love them for it. For guys who want luxury, this pair looks the part. As the name suggests, these are beard scissors that would look at home in the bathroom of any member of the royal family. Surprise, surprise, they’re also the priciest scissors on our list.

They look flashy as hell, but they’re also at the top of the hardness scale at HRC 61-64. That means they’re as hard as scissors get and razor-sharp. They’re pretty but be wise; not taking them seriously could lead to some sliced ear skin.

If you’re the type who wants to trim like a king, these shears are worth the high admission.

Material: HRC 61-64 stainless steel | Blade size: 5.5” | Features: Ultra-high quality steel, lion-head tension knob, screw-on finger rest, includes hard case

    What we like

    • Beautifully flashy design
    • Cuts as excellent as it looks
    What we don’t like

    • Too expensive for many early bearders

They don’t have a witty name or the most rigid steel, but Suvorna delivers a competent all-arounder that’s feature-rich and a solid starter for any beardy on a budget. The 5” length is perfect for nimble trim work but large enough for hacking down facial forests with ease.

If cared for, the build is quality enough to last years, but you’ll probably have upgraded your beard life by then. It’s an excellent jack-of-all-trades shear that is easy to recommend for dipping your toes in the beard game.

Material: HRC 53-54 stainless steel | Blade size: 5” | Features: Hand-adjustable tension knob, micro-serrated blades, screw-on finger rest, includes soft case

    What we like

    • Awesome price
    • Micro-serrated blades
    What we don’t like

    • Won’t last as long as pricier shears

Badass Beard Care makes it back on the list again for good reasons. If their Gold series shears are the best all-around, these bad boys are the specialists. They’re missing a few luxuries that the Gold series affords, but they excel at what they do.

The blunt tips tell you that these scissors are built more for large trim jobs than precision sculpting. You can set the hand-adjustable tension knob loose and chip away at a big beard without worrying about accidentally poking a hole in your neck. The only issue with being a great specialist? You’ll need different scissors if you want serious precision.

They’re softer steel than their black and gold brother, but the all-black design is still smoking hot, and they’re a great addition to any growing beard care set.

Material: HRC 56-57 stainless steel | Blade size: 5.25” | Features: Hand-adjustable tension knob, finger rest, titanium coated, includes case, scissor oil, and hard case

    What we like

    • Perfectly designed for scruff shaping
    • Signature Badass Beard Care tension knob
    What we don’t like

    • Can’t be your only pair of beard scissors

Don’t let the small size fool you; if you sent a kid to school with these, they might lose a few digits. These are crazy sharp. Luckily, you aren’t a child. And these mustache scissors have a blunt tip to avoid giving yourself a new lip piercing.

These do great work on buff, Jason Mamoa caterpillar lips, and the more tame Chris Hemsworth mouth carpets. They work fine on the rest of the face, too, but the shorter size lends these to being best for mustache work.

Material: matte stainless steel | Blade size: 4” | Features: Tension screw, blunt tip

    What we like

    • Shorter blade perfect for mustache sculpting
    • Blunt tips to avoid painful mistakes
    What we don’t like

    • Metal could be harder

Beard Scissor sets are ideal for starting out on your fur-filled journey and make a perfect gift for any young beardsman. It comes with three beard care essentials: beard balm for its health, a comb for taming, and scissors for trims. Coupled with the disposable razor you almost definitely have, you can grow and maintain a healthy beard solely with this trio.

It comes with a pretty decent pair of scissors for a starter set. They’re not the best-looking or most feature-rich shears, but they do all the basics well and don’t fall apart.

A sweet pearwood comb and fan-favorite beard balm make this a winning set.

Material: Japanese stainless steel | Blade size: 6” | Features: Tension screw, finger rest, includes beard balm and beard comb

    What we like

    • Great starter scissors
    • Awesome set for the price
    What we don’t like

    • Scissors aren’t exceptional

What to look for in beard scissors

    Build Quality

Beard scissors all look like the same little bits of steel, minus a few color changes here and there, but that doesn’t mean they are. The types of steel used in facial shears can vary more than you might think. Lower-quality shears won’t be as sharp and might yank some beard hairs out before cutting them. Sounds like a crap ex-beard-ience (see what we did there?).

The harder the steel, the sharper the blade, and the longer it will take to dull. Make sure you buy carefully; you don’t want to end up with a pair of rusty twigs instead of shiny shears after some years of use.

    Price

One of the first things you’re going to look at is probably the price. It might shock you that prices for beard scissors can run sky high. You can spend well over a thousand dollars on ultra-high quality beard scissors. But you’re probably not a barber, so there are plenty of great options for way less than a grand.

Unless you’re the type to use money as toilet paper, you probably don’t want the most expensive scissors. $300 was the most we’d recommend, and that will get you a damn good pair of beard shears.

    Size & Shape

5-6” total length with a 2” blade is standard for regular beard scissors. Past 6” and you’re venturing into hair scissor territory, and that is not where your face wants to be. For beard scissors, longer = less precise. So don’t you dare try trimming with those poultry-rending shears from the kitchen. You might unintentionally lop off more than an extra chunk of facial hair.

Also, keep in mind that if you’re limited to one pair of beard scissors, make it the kind with the pointed tip. A Round tip won’t get you the level of precision you need when you want to get fancy with your hair art.

    FAQ

      • Trimming a beard with scissors takes practice to master but is worth the practice. Get talented enough with beard scissors, and you can sculpt some true body-hair masterpieces. Hell, maybe even become an amateur stylist in your spare time.

Not everyone can go to the barber weekly (or more). Get your scissors, a comb, and either a trimmer or a razor for detailing to pull it off at home. Then follow our step-by-step guide. Don’t blame us if you mess it up, though. We can’t give you steady hands.

        • Don’t just rush in scissors blazing. You need a plan. It might seem like common sense, but have a style in mind when you start snipping to avoid sabotaging yourself.

          • Don’t expect to dive into this trim with a haggard hermit beard. Not only will your mug fuzz be less pliable and coarse, but that’s just gross. You should probably shower more often, man.

            1. Comb your beard

Some of you might be impatient, but you need to go slow here. Rushing through this can damage your beautiful, budding beard. You want your man-fur to have every advantage it can in life.

Comb it away from the body until it is tangle-free, and keep it moving.

            2. Trim that base

You’ll need a well-defined beard foundation to start, so trim down the hairs at the tip of your beard (or trim it down to your desired length), and make sure all the hairs are the same length.

All the hair at the bottom should be the same length now.

            3. Neck cleanup time

Unless you’re going for wizard-chic, you’ll need to clean up your neck. Any razor will do the job, but guys with sensitive skin might want to seek an electric trimmer for this. It won’t cut as low, but you’ll avoid razor burn and bumpy necks.

Trim everything from your Adam’s apple down, and you’ll stay golden ponyboy (sorry, couldn’t resist).

            4. Clean your cheeks

It’s time to take care of the wild hairs poking out from your fresh beard. You know the ones I mean. Snip every rogue hair you see to keep yourself looking suave and stately, not unkempt and lazy.

            5. Handle the mustache

You can skip this step if you’re going for the untamed walrus look. For everyone else, trim the stache using your top lip as a reference. Keep the sides growing if you want to begin forming mustache handlebars.

Either way, you’ll probably want to clear out the front of your mouth. It’s tough to eat with a mouth full of hair.

            6. Pamper your creation

Congratulations. You trimmed your own beard and hopefully didn’t screw it up. Even if you did, no one would notice (probably). Just be sure to treat you and your beard with the care you both deserve.

Massage in some of the best beard balms or beard oils to keep any dander snowstorms and the dreaded itchy-hot beard at bay. Skipping this crucial step can lead to face blizzards and all-day neck-scratching fests. You’ve been warned.

Congratulations, you trimmed your beard correctly and made it out alive. Keep up with this routine, and that beard will stay looking and feeling fresh.

Hair Legend Kim Kimble on the Uplifting Power of Hair

For decades, Hollywood stars like Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Brandy, Zendaya, and Shakira have sought out Kim Kimble’s gifted hands and sharp eye. The trusted hairstylist has become a celebrity favorite for help achieving impeccable glam, but also for guidance when looking to experiment with their self-expression.

As a third-generation hairstylist who grew up in salons, Kimble has grown deeply attuned to the power, vulnerability, and emotion that exist beneath the surface of our hair. The ways it can make or break a person’s day, impact mental health and confidence, and the connection one can feel by just sitting in a stylist’s chair.

Kimble’s illustrious 30-year career has included working as a shampoo girl for her mother, crafting next-level hair sculptures, and competing at hair show competitions in the 90s—which prepared her for the epic hair designs she’d go on to do in the 1997 cult classic B.A.P.S. Then there’s opening a West Hollywood salon, starring in a hit reality series, L.A. Hair, for five seasons about running her salon, manufacturing her own products—including a Walmart line for natural hair that coincided with Kimble’s own natural hair journey, a Youtube show, and serving as a department head on a number of TV shows and films, like the second season of HBO’s smash hit Euphoria.

Her journey with hair, others, and her own is extensive and powerful. It’s filled with moments of reflection and truly illuminates the connection between hair and wellness. Kimble chatted with ELLE about the many emotions a hair journey can encompass, showcasing the Euphoria characters’ chaotic inner worlds through their hair in season 2, and the personal journey of learning to love her natural hair as an adult.

Something I’m realizing more with time is how much of what we experience internally as human beings—sadness, fatigue, anxiety, desire, and so on—manifests in our hair choices and routines, or lack thereof. Is that something you’re constantly reminded of in your work?

When I got into the business, I didn’t know how emotionally tied people were going to be to their hair until I got into doing it. One big example is all of the issues with people’s hair that came from the pandemic during quarantine. I know a girl who didn’t comb her hair for an entire year. One, I think she was depressed, but two, she’s like, “Nobody can do my hair because of the pandemic. I don’t know who to go to. I don’t know what to do.” But why couldn’t you comb your own hair? But it’s just the mental state of what people were going through. There has been a lot of hair loss, a lot of hair breakage and damage, and a lot of problems when it comes to hair. People trying to do it and some people not trying to do anything about it. Just our regular, everyday trauma, and then on top of it we have pandemic trauma.

It seems like doing hair can include a lot of emotional labor. I know I’ve definitely heard and experienced deep talks in a stylist’s chair. How do you protect your energy and practice self-care?

A lot of clients get in your chair and they kind of almost look at you as a psychiatrist in a way. They sit down and they start discussing their problems. One thing I learned to do as a hairstylist, so I wouldn’t take on all that energy by myself is, I hear but I don’t hear. I don’t feel like I always have to have an opinion. I had to learn that because you take on too many people’s emotional issues.

Most times, people don’t really want your opinion. They just want to get it out. You can kind of tell and you just go, “Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah.” Just trying to also protect yourself and your space—because I do take things on and I get emotional too when people are going through stuff. You know, just kind of let it bounce off and push it back out there in the world. You can’t take on a lot of people’s energy and their issues and their things. That’s my recommendation for people who are in that position often.

You’ve been a department head on a number of TV shows, feature films, music videos, and Beyoncé ~experiences~ since the ‘90s. Most recently you helmed all things hair on the second season of Euphoria. Can you give us a glimpse into showing the emotional journey of TV’s most chaotic teens through their hair?

The beauty of doing hair for films and television is it’s really about who that character is, what that character’s going through, and the progression of that character sometimes. So it’s all in the writing. The process is a collaboration with the director, costumes, makeup, and actor.

For example, Rue is on drugs. She’s not really one of those teenagers that’s into her hair like that. Sometimes she’ll try, but not really. It never hits it. She’s not in a mental state of really loving herself because she’s on drugs and suffering from her drug abuse, and so that shows in her hair. She’s not really grooming her hair. She’s just like, “You know what, I’m getting up. I’m looking for my next fix. And I ain’t really thinking about what my hair is looking like right now.” So [her hair] tells that story.

I loved how you showed Cassie’s spiral through her meticulous hairstyles.

That was Sam Levinson. That’s something he specifically pointed out that he wanted. He said, “Hey, I want to show this progression of her spiraling out of control where we’re going to do different hairstyles and come up with some styles that show that she was trying to…” Her whole thing is that she’s trying to get attention and stand out. She’s kind of losing her mind over this boy.

So definitely a lot of her hair showed her state of mind. There was also a scene where now she’s trying to be someone who Nate wants her to be. So she dyed her hair more blonde, and she becomes his doll. That’s kind of how Sam described it. She becomes a sort of Malibu Barbie.

If your hair could talk, what’s a lesson it would share from your own hair journey?

Recently, I really restructured my entire hair or being. I used to do a lot of extensions and straighten my hair and chemically alter my hair to make it look more straight. But the last couple of years, I’ve been on a natural hair journey. Learning how to love my own hair. I hated my hair growing up. I was like, This hair is the most difficult hair in the world to deal with. It was even like, God, why? Why?

I think that’s a common journey for so many, you’re definitely not alone in that.

Right. But, I learned that God says, “You’re beautiful.” So you’re well made. And then I started seeing all these bloggers that wore natural hair. And I said, “Well now their hair is beautiful.” They have figured out a way to kind of work with their own hair. And I even recently created a natural hairline that we launched in Walmart. As I was working on it, I said, “This is the perfect time for me to experience this and go through this hair journey of rocking my natural hair.” And I enjoyed it. People liked it. It gave me a chance to actually be able to feel what that customer feels, and know what she wants when it comes to rocking natural hair.

I had a lot of customers on social media asking, “What can I do for my 4C hair?” and “What kind of product can I use for this and that?” So when creating these products, I said, you know what, I have that same hair, let me figure it out. I cut my hair and started wearing it naturally. I started realizing, “Oh, my hair is different. It’s nice. It just needs the right techniques and the right products. Okay. Now I finally appreciate my texture and my hair.”

Now it’s growing out so I’m going through a transition, which is frustrating. Because my next journey is hair growth. So I’m cutting it now because now I’m on a journey to grow. I do like to switch it up (braids, twists, weaves, natural hairpieces, etc). I don’t want the same look all the time. But now I know how to work with my hair and it does make me feel better about myself. And I wish, gosh, I wish years ago I knew this.

When you reflect on your incredible career and the legacy of Kim Kimble, what’s one thing you hope sticks with people?

The quality of my work. Even though I have a lot of work, quantity, probably helped too. The more you do something, the better you get at it. Some people don’t care about that these days, and they’re not really into perfecting or even telling a story with their hair.

I started off in a salon at a beauty college. I did different phases. I went through a phase of just educating. Then competing. Then I got into TV entertainment. Then manufacturing my own products and things. Going from behind the camera to in front of the camera.

I’ve had an amazing journey and it shows what a hairstylist is, when you love what you do and you really focus on what you do and you are authentic and true to what you do—look at all the options of what you can do. I’ve had so many different, great opportunities. I just want to continue to grow and see where I go next.

Sydney Sweeney’s Micro-mini + More MTV Movie & TV Awards Looks

Sydney Sweeney. Photography courtesy of Getty Images

Popcorn trophies, Paris Hilton and more moments that have us asking, what year is it?

The MTV Movie & TV Awards has been creating viral moments before social media was even really a thing. Take the 2005 show, when Best Kiss winners Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams recreated their dramatic smooch from The Notebook on stage as Maroon 5’s “She Will Be Loved” played over cheers (including those from celebrities like Hillary Duff and Lindsay Lohan). Is there anything more quintessentially early 2000s than that?

And last night, MTV tapped into our collective nostalgia for that very era. Between appearances by J. Lo and Snoop Dog, Vanessa Hudgens as host and noughties fashion (Sydney Sweeney’s Miu Miu micro-mini; Olivia Rodrigo’s spiky updo), the MTV Movie & TV Awards red carpet took us on a trip back through time.

See for yourself in the gallery below, where we’ve rounded up all the best red carpet looks.

20 Of The Best Gold Bracelets For Men To Spice Up Any Outfit (2022 Edition)

The key to instantly elevating a boring outfit is to add some jewelry like a simple silver chain necklace or gold bracelets for men. Whether you are new to men’s jewelry or you have a rocking collection already, bracelets for men are more versatile than you think and are relatively easy to style.

Ann Verhelst, a Belgian designer known for her fashion label Ann Demeulemeester once commented that “jewelry is something that has to do with emotion”. We couldn’t agree more. Collecting each piece of jewelry for most people has a lot of memory and sentimental value attached to it. Adding a simple jewelry piece like gold bracelets for men to any outfit will also instantly give you that confidence boost that you didn’t even know you needed.

With that being said, shopping for a gold bracelet can be intimidating, especially if you are new to this side of styling. All the professional jewelry-related terms and unfamiliar brands can leave you clueless. We’ve done the research for you and picked out the best gold bracelets you can buy right now – ranging in all price points, occasions, aesthetics, and designers.

Our Top Picks: Gold Bracelets for Men

This may come as no surprise to you, but we had to get Tiffany & Co. off our chest first when putting this list together. As an American luxury jewelry giant, this brand holds a special place in most (if not all) women’s hearts and men’s as well. Their selection of men’s bracelets especially is well curated with pieces that seamlessly merge utility with an edge.

Their iconic Tiffany T collection is robustly filled with timeless pieces that are gorgeously unisex – but for men, we particularly love the T1 Wide Hinged Bangle in 18k gold. As a reinvention of the most popular Tiffany T square bracelet, this hinged bangle has been updated with a continuous, unbroken circle and a strong, beveled “T” motif, which is the signature of the brand.

Tiffany & Co. T1 Wide Hinged Bangle

When speaking of gold bracelets for men, we cannot leave out the famous Love Bracelet by Cartier. This 18k yellow gold bracelet is a true icon within the realm of fine jewelry and thus is often selected as the no-brainer piece for luxury jewelry buyers and celebrities like Kanye West, Drake, and Zac Efron. Since 1969, this gold bracelet has been a symbol of free-spirited love, making it a popular item to wear as a matching bracelet with your partner.

The most unique element about the Love Bracelet is that you need to screw the bracelet on (with the help of a partner) to secure the bracelet on your wrist. The bracelet comes with a handy screwdriver. The famous locking technology makes this a semi-permanent bracelet that you would wear 24/7 – yes, you’d wear it to sleep and in the shower as well.

    Cartier Love Bracelet

It is not an exaggeration to say that Miansai was one of the leading brands that normalized jewelry for men in the contemporary era, especially bracelets. When Michael Saiger founded Miansai in 2008, the hook and anchor rope bracelets and screw cuffs instantly became a uniform for stylish men in the fashion industry.

Nowadays, Miansai’s ID Chain Bracelet is making its way to become the modern-day essential. The ID Chain Bracelet is available in various widths, all carrying their own charm. We especially love it in the 3mm gold vermeil version for its versatility and comparably affordable price point.

This sleek and understated is one of those gold bracelets for men with the perfect width; thin enough to look effortless, but also thick enough to show off some bling. The best thing about the 3mm ID Chain Bracelet is that it features a blank curved plate that can be customized with your name, motto, phone number, you name it. We think the gold vermeil is just fine to serve its purpose, but if you are a fine jewelry kind of guy, they also have the same bracelet in 14k gold as well.

It was all over the fashion press when the affordable fine jewelry brand Mejuri finally launched its men’s jewelry line in 2020. Mejuri is known for its minimal pieces that are designed to be worn every day, for all occasions – and this was great news for men.

The Flat Curb Chain Bracelet has been a bestseller for a while and a cult favorite for men that strive for a minimal and sophisticated look. Made in 14k solid gold, this is one of those gold bracelets for men that gives the perfect amount of shine and sparkle. While also seamlessly blending with any outfit. This bracelet can easily be stacked with other options (like the runner-up) on the site or worn alone.

If you are a minimalist with a love for simple, clean outfits, Le gramme’s Ribbon Bracelet is our best pick for you. Le gramme is a high-end men’s jewelry brand with a unique concept of each jewelry object being named by its weight in grams.

The ribbon bracelet le 7g is finished with a brushed polish, making it appear semi-matt which we love. This will make any minor scratches less visible and will age nicely with wear. The sleek, open bangle format also makes it quick and easy to slip on your wrist, which is a nice plus for busy men.

Le gramme Ribbon Bracelet Le 7g

Apologies for the repetition, but we could not leave the Le gramme website without raving about the Cable Bracelet Le 9g. Another hit from the brand, some of its gold bracelets for men have become the blueprint for cable bracelets in general.

Made with 750 yellow gold, this cable bracelet gives off a more casual vibe compared to the aforementioned counterpart. Think of the cable version as the hipster younger cousin of the more polished ribbon bracelet.

Le gramme Cable Bracelet Le 11g

If you want to add some sparkle without dropping piles of money, try out Miabella’s Figaro Chain Bracelet. This simple, lightweight chain bracelet is sterling silver and plated with 18k yellow gold for added durability.

The classic chain design with flat diamond-cut beveled links gives some gold bracelets for men an extra shine that doesn’t come off as overly flamboyant. The simplicity will add instant oomph to any casual outfit like a plain white tee and your favorite pair of jeans.

Don’t let the affordable price fool you. The 925 sterling silver material is hypoallergenic and nickel-free, making it durable and a great choice for men with sensitive skin.

Santa-Fe-based super brand, Peyote Bird, channels the wild American Southwest in its impeccable line of unique jewelry. Adding any gold bracelets for men to your next formal outfit to add a little trick up your sleeve (and if your shoes are shined enough, a little spring in your step).

As we have seen on runways for years, adding that last touch to an outfit can take it to the next level. One aspect that is too quickly overlooked is a necessary piece of texture. Expect this piece to be in heavy rotation and turn into a well-loved vintage piece in years to come.

OCD Is Not an Adjective— Here’s Why Using It as One Is Harmful

    ocd is not an adjective

Sometimes it feels like everywhere I turn, I hear different variations of the same statement over and over: “I’m so OCD,” “He’s a little bit OCD,” “I need to clean my kitchen, my boyfriend is totally OCD.” In a virtual work meeting just last week, a makeup artist approvingly said that some of her clients are “so OCD” that she never has to worry about their makeup being less than perfect. I was scrolling TikTok a few nights ago when I saw a girl stating she only lets her boyfriend buy certain types of shoes because she’s “OCD.” I’ve heard it from celebrities; even from friends.

As someone clinically diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, it’s exhausting listening to people trivialize a mental illness that makes me miserable every single day. If you’re guilty of what I’m talking about, please, understand: OCD is not an adjective. It’s a noun, and it describes an exhausting, debilitating, often terrifying condition.

When I was 11, I started compulsively confessing to my Mom. Whether it was about something big, like cheating on a test at school, or something as simple as having a negative thought, if my brain deemed something I did as “bad,” I had to tell my Mom. It didn’t matter how insignificant or unimportant it was, if I didn’t confess, the guilt would take over. I would have a sick feeling in my stomach, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep, and nothing would make me feel better until I confessed. Once I did, I would feel OK for a little while, until my brain latched onto another “bad” thought, and the cycle would start all over again.

OCD is not an adjective. It’s a noun, and it describes an exhausting, debilitating, often terrifying condition.

This went on for years, until one day the need to confess ebbed away. I never gave it another thought, until I started confessing again when I was 27 — this time to my boyfriend. I’ve always been a bit of an oversharer, but this went so far beyond oversharing. I knew something was wrong, but I had no idea what to do about it. I went to different doctors, psychiatrists, and even a hypnotherapist — but nothing could stop the constant anxiety, other than confessing. In the months that followed, I was misdiagnosed as bipolar, put on a bipolar med, and sent to a bipolar specialist. It wasn’t until I told her about the confessing that she realized what was actually going on: I had obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Looking back now, I can see how OCD infiltrated my entire life starting from when I was 11; I just didn’t see it at the time. I was always told I was controlling or eccentric because I needed things a certain way, but no one ever guessed there was a mental illness behind all of my “quirks.” Of course, I had heard of obsessive-compulsive disorder, on TV and in books and movies, but it had always been portrayed as being overly organized or germaphobic. Any time I heard someone referencing OCD, they were usually using it flippantly and, typically, incorrectly.

I had heard of obsessive-compulsive disorder, on TV and in books and movies, but it had always been portrayed as being organized or cleanly. Any time I heard someone referencing OCD, they were usually using it flippantly and, typically, incorrectly.

It’s become so common to use the term as an adjective that if you look up OCD in the Oxford Dictionary, the definition includes the following entry: “adjective: having a tendency towards excessive orderliness, perfectionism, and great attention to detail.” The dictionary calls out this definition as “offensive,” and it is — but sadly, the word’s “slang” usage is still shockingly widespread.

As someone with obsessive-compulsive disorder, I believe using OCD as an adjective is harmful for many reasons. For one, using OCD when you mean “very neat” invalidates the feelings of those who are suffering from symptoms associated with the condition. Clinical counselor Amanda Petrik-Gardner, LCPC, LPC, LIMHP, tells POPSUGAR, “When OCD (or any mental health disorder) is used as an adjective, it dismisses the severity of the diagnosis and invalidates those with the actual disorder.”

The second reason is that using OCD as an adjective oftentimes exacerbates stereotypes about the disorder, which can make it hard to recognize real symptoms of OCD. If what OCD was really like was talked about more, and if more people knew the different subtypes and the symptoms, rather than writing it off as a term used to describe people who are overly organized, maybe people wouldn’t have to search so long and so hard for a diagnosis, like I did.

Even if someone is clinically diagnosed with OCD, they still are not “OCD” — because OCD is not an adjective.

Whenever I hear someone refer to themselves or someone else as “so OCD” in conversation, my immediate reaction is always either annoyance or anger. But a doctor I’ve worked with in the past, Dan Kalb, PhD, tells POPSUGAR that these moments could be an opportunity to call people in and educate them. “Though OCD sufferers may feel grossly misunderstood or casually dismissed by those who use OCD as an adjective, it’s best to regard this as a teachable moment. Assume the other party meant well and was simply trying to connect. Respond in a respectful, truly helpful manner without pique or condescension. We all make unintentional mistakes due to ignorance, and none of us likes to be chided or shamed when we do,” Dr. Kalb says.

Part of me agrees with Dr. Kalb, and at times I’ve wished I’d been better about speaking up and helping people understand why flippantly calling oneself “so OCD” is incorrect and even offensive. But although he does have a point, and I believe that this problem won’t go away without all of us having more open conversations about mental health in general, I also don’t think the responsibility should always fall on me to educate those who are not using mental health related terms correctly. Even though I’m fairly open about the fact that I have OCD, it’s not something I feel comfortable talking about all the time, but I often find myself disclosing my diagnosis when I’m encouraging someone to refrain from using OCD as slang.

I understand that most people who use OCD as an adjective don’t intend to be harmful or insensitive, but regardless, that’s the impact of their words. And OCD isn’t the only mental health term that’s used incorrectly: I often hear people using words like “bipolar,” “addicted,” and “anorexic” as slang to mean moody, passionate about, or thin. I think this speaks to the fact that we have a long way to go when it comes to reducing stigma around mental health. But it’s never too late to start, especially if making a difference is as simple as choosing a different adjective.

If you’re someone who casually uses the term OCD as an adjective, please stop. While the harm might not be intended, it’s still there.

So, if you’re someone who casually uses the term OCD as an adjective, please stop. While the harm might not be intended, it’s still there. Think about all of the people who are suffering from the disorder and don’t yet know what’s going on with them. Think about how alone they might feel, how they might be scared of their own thoughts, and how they might be questioning their own sanity.

Even if you would never use mental health terms flippantly, consider speaking up when you hear other people doing so. Let them know why you think the habit is harmful, so the burden doesn’t always fall on people with the condition to spread awareness. And if you’re someone who has OCD and you’re tired of hearing people use the term as an adjective, know you’re not alone.

Micheal B. Jordan and Lori Harvey Reportedly Broken Up After More Than a Year Together

After a year and a half of dating, Michael B. Jordan and Lori Harvey have broken up. People reports that a source close to the former couple confirmed the news.

“Michael and Lori are both completely heartbroken,” the source said. “They still love each other.”

They explained, “Michael matured a lot over the course of their relationship and was ready to commit for the long term. He let down his guard with her, opening up emotionally in a romantic relationship for the first time…They had great times together and brought out the best in each other.”

The pair made their red carpet debut in March, attending the 2022 Vanity Fair Oscar Party in Beverly Hills together. In May, 25-year-old Harvey was alone in Cannes for the screening of Final Cut (Coupez!), and rumors that she was on the rocks with the 35-year-old Creed star began when she returned.

They first went “Instagram official” in January of 2021, and celebrated their anniversary in November of that year. A month later, Jordan told The Hollywood Reporter that he “finally found what love was” with Harvey, and that’s why he was comfortable being public about their relationship.

“When I was younger, I don’t know if I could have handled the onslaught of opinions and being picked apart, and also being conscious of what the other person’s going to go through,” he said. “It takes a special person to deal with that.”

He continued, “There’s a premeditated planning of staying out of the way [of the public eye] that sometimes kills spontaneity and intimacy. I wanted to take that away and give this the best chance it had, in this weird world that we live in, to be somewhat normal. Long story short, I think it’s just the timing of everything. It was the right time for me. Yeah. I’m happy.”

Harvey discussed her happiness with Jordan on The Real in September of that year.

“We just really balance each other,” she said. “I really do believe in the statement when they say, ‘When you know you know.’ And I think that really applies to our situation and we just have a really good time together.”
