Lady Gaga’s Haus Labs is Back and Better Than Ever

HY-POWER PIGMENT PAINT

Haus Labs

$24.00

“I was not yet an expert in the beauty industry when I first launched Haus Labs,” Lady Gaga confesses to me over Zoom from her bathroom. In front of her is a collection of brightly colored products—the new version of Haus Labs. “Back then, I was an expert in my stage makeup, an expert in my red carpet makeup, an expert in fashion makeup.”

The OG Haus Labs launched in 2019, giving consumers the Lady Gaga makeup experience. And we wanted it! But in the last two and a half years, Gaga has realized two things:

  1. Most consumers aren’t wearing a version of her stage, red carpet, or fashion makeup.
  2. Her cravings regarding her makeup routine are no longer the same.

And so, as of today, Haus Labs has changed, too.

You’ll still find all the artistry you’d expect from a makeup line from Lady Gaga—bold pigments and cool textures—and something that’s a surprise, too. “All of the products are infused with skincare ingredients, some of which are proprietary to our lab,” she shares. “We’ve also removed 2,600 dirty ingredients. So you’re getting that high performance and high pigment payoff. You’re also getting makeup that makes a difference in your skin.”

The day we talk, Gaga’s eyes are painted with the Hy-Power Pigment Paint in Mint Matte, which matches the latex blazer she’s wearing. It comes in 20 different matte and shimmer varieties, including subtle rose golds, a muted peach, and any bold shade your heart could desire. And don’t forget the bonus ingredients: low weight hyaluronic acid

    and squalane.

    PHD HYBRID LIP OIL

    Haus Labs

    $24.00

“I love lip stains,” she says while dabbing a doe-foot onto her mouth. “But not how they always seem to dry my lips out, so we made a lip oil that doubles as a stain. Once you blot it, it seeps into your lips, leaving you with a beautiful pH-balancing color.”

When people think of clean beauty, they usually think of no-makeup makeup. Haus Labs’s newest iteration is breaking that mold—you can now have your Euphoria-inspired beauty look while using products that are part of the clean beauty world. On top of the previously mentioned universal paints and lip oil stains, there are gel-bronzers, highlighters, lip crayons, eyeliners, and brow pencils, all available at the brand’s website and Sephora.

And for those who still want the full Gaga-face, don’t stress. “You will still recognize this brand as an artistry brand without ever calling it a clean brand,” she adds.

The new Haus Labs launches are available starting June 9th at Sephora and hauslabs.com.

Cubicles Are Having a Major Fashion Moment

Nobody doubts the financial acuity of Chloe Cherry. Nobody expects to see her in the office, either. Enter Donatella Versace, who recruited the porn-starlet-turned-Euphoria breakout actress for her newest fashion spread: a SSENSE exclusive starring Cherry in double-breasted power suits, seal-the-deal stilettos, and crisp white oxfords with bustiers busting out at the seams. (Think: Superman’s quick change from Clark Kent, but with a black lace bra instead of a DC Comics unitard.) Cherry perches on a desk, finding her light in an old-school computer monitor. Her wrist is restrained by a telephone cord. Her expression is on high alert—wide eyes, parted lips, hair higher than a Morgan Stanley profit margin. And though perhaps she is werk-ing rather than working, the message is clear: Boss bitches are this season’s sex goddesses, and the IRL office is their pantheon.

“We always want what we can’t have, huh?” asks costume designer Sarah Edwards when I tell her the news that office cubicles are the latest status accessories. While selecting costumes for Apple TV+’s Severance, Edwards spent months holed up in an office with Ben Stiller, Adam Scott, and the rest of the cast, creating a dystopian corporate wonderland that’s captured the imagination of viewers, including more than a few fashion pros. “I started dressing that cast during peak work-from-home hours. I couldn’t find a woman’s power suit anywhere. Ben [Stiller] talks about Severance as maybe happening in an alternate reality. But we became our own alternate reality during the pandemic, at least in terms of workwear.”

Stella Maxwell and Jordan Barrett for Sir The Label.

    Sir The Label

That alternate reality took vintage TV and movies and turned them into pop culture wish lists. As social distancing mandates began in 2020, The Office became the year’s most-streamed TV show and turned from a corporate satire “into an aspirational fantasy.” Nap dresses and cashmere sweats became the height of luxury. And faced with suddenly available office spaces, photographers and creative directors began to plot what was next for fashion campaigns and social media mood boards—which is nearly always a maximum projection of “what we can’t have.” For summer 2022, that’s not necessarily an influencer-blasted Positano cruise, or a campaign drenched with tropical shorelines and sun-licked skin. It is, somewhat maddeningly, a retro cubicle with a landline, industrial carpet, and the stark LED lighting of a beauty vlogger’s nightmares.

Besides Cherry’s SSENSE spread, there have been some other notable entries into fashion’s recent officecore obsession: Agent Provocateur’s current campaign has model Alana Felisberto donning a sheer lingerie set, accessorized by a Rolodex and Palm Pilot. Chanel captures some glamour on a midday rooftop coffee break. Tod’s new video campaign features a character called “The Workaholic” posing in a keynote-ready blazer and glasses at her handsome wooden desk. The luxury beauty behemoth Violet Grey photographed its face cream with an old-school office phone, complete with tangled wires and a handwritten extension guide. Versace’s video announcement of its Cher collab took place in a bedazzled conference room. Sir The Label photographed Insta-candy like Stella Maxwell and Jordan Barrett lugging computer monitors and copy machine paper through an empty corporate HQ. Despite the fact that summer is looming, the office campaign shoots seem to keep coming, along with a Balenciaga runway show that took place at the very epicenter of American corporate business: the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street.

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Boss bitches are this season’s sex goddesses, and the IRL office is their pantheon.

In her recent profile of Kind Regards designer Shopé Delano, ELLE’s own Véronique Hyland asks, “Can officewear ever be cool?” She answers her own question pretty early in the piece (Delano is indeed cool, and so are her clothes) but the recent office-themed campaigns don’t center workwear specifically—just the workplace. Why? Severance’s Sarah Edwards thinks she knows. “We’ve wondered several times if the world of our show is an alternate reality,” she says. “But in a lot of ways, a corporate office is its own kind of alternate reality, and most people haven’t returned to a typical one in about two years. Maybe they never will again.”

And if fashion’s function is, in part, to create a dream reality we can’t access in real life, maybe it’s not so weird that everyone from Euphoria cast members to Italian heritage labels is suddenly clocking in.

This Award-Winning Mask Nourishes Your Lips Three Ways

From a lip mask to a prep treatment and a lip balm, you only need one product to do it all

Everyone’s lips could use a little extra TLC and there’s no better way to show your pout some love than with a product that moisturizes and smooths lips. belif’s Aqua Bomb Overnight Lip Mask is basically the only product you need to have the plump, hydrated lips you’ve always dreamed of. Thanks to its non-sticky, mild formula that can be worn as an overnight lip mask, used to prep your lips before makeup or as a lip balm on its own, the Aqua Bomb Overnight Lip Mask is the winner of the Best Lip Treatment 2022 Beauty Award. Read on to find out what makes it a makeup kit must-have.

    The winning formula

The Aqua Bomb Overnight Lip Mask provides long-lasting moisture in a nourishing formula that’s suitable for all skin types, including super-sensitive, dry, chapped lips. It’s formulated with 10 percent shea butter, which creates a texture that melts into lips for a comfortable effect that doesn’t feel sticky at all. It also contains cica (Centella Asiatica), which is also known as tiger grass because it is known that wild cats would roll in the herb to soothe and repair their wounds. “Cica helps to support your body’s natural ability to repair while soothing irritation associated with dryness,” says Samantha Mae Henderson, national district trainer for belif. Meanwhile, madecassoide helps restore lips to their natural beauty, while herbal ingredients including oat seed, calendula and antioxidant-rich raspberry leaf extract work to soothe lips. The formula is free from parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, animal origin ingredients and sulphates. Its scent is very mild and there’s no colour added, either—just a whole lot of caring ingredients for your lips.

    How to use it

Option 1: As a lip mask

If you want to give your pucker a luxe treatment, apply a thin to generous layer (depending on how dry your lips are) of the Aqua Bomb Overnight Lip Mask evenly across your lips before bed. It’s the perfect product to try slugging, which Henderson says helps to intensely lock in moisture. Just apply a generous amount on the lips so that they feel nice and slippery for intense moisture-locking ability. In the morning, all you need to do is wipe off any excess and voila—start your day with super smooth, hydrated lips.

    Option 2: As lip prep

Ready to rock lipstick again? Use the Aqua Bomb Overnight Lip Mask as a quick lip prep mask. Since it plumps and smooths lips, it works great as a base for lipstick or gloss. Think of it as the first step of your makeup routine: Simply apply an ample amount evenly across your lips and let them soak up the moisture for five to 10 minutes. Then use a tissue to wipe off any excess. Your lips will feel plump, hydrated and smooth for chap-free lip colour.

Option 3: As a lip balm

You can also use it on its own throughout the day as an ultra hydrating lip balm. Just spread a thin layer evenly across your lips and rub them together to promote absorption. “A little bit goes a long way to keep your lips feeling moisturized with a subtle glow,” Henderson says. Toss it into your purse and lightly dab it onto your pucker any time you want some nourishing moisture and light shine.

Add belif Aqua Bomb Overnight Lip Mask to your routine by visiting Sephora.ca and see how it can transform chapped lips into a soft, luscious pout.

The New Moderna Vaccine Booster Could Be the “Turning Point” For the Pandemic

Coronavirus vaccine vial with AstraZeneca logo a black background. The concept of medicine, healthcare and science.

With COVID-19 cases surging again, many people are wondering what the future of the global pandemic will look like in the U.S. Amid the uncertainty, however, a recently authorized antiviral treatment and a new Moderna booster set for fall have experts suggesting there could be an end in sight.

Early Wednesday, Moderna officials announced that their new bivalent booster offers “superior antibody response against omicron, compared to the company’s current vaccine,” according to ABC News. Moderna’s chief medical officer Paul Burton, MD, told ABC news, “We could for the first time, be at a vaccine that is truly effective with once yearly dosing because we know those antibody levels will decay.” Dr. Burton noted that, according to the data, he believes this new booster to be “highly effective” and a “turning point” for the global pandemic.

For context, this bivalent booster combines the original Moderna shot with a vaccine specifically targeting omicron — and the results in individuals are “highly effective,” confirms Dr. Burton. As for the proposed side effects, CNN reports that they are “similar to booster doses of the current vaccine,” meaning individuals could expect “fever, headache, fatigue, and pain at the injection site.”

Though this is very exciting news, it’s important to note that Moderna has not requested authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just yet, though they’d like to “as quickly as possible,” per ABC News. As for when it could potentially become authorized by the FDA, the website states that for “priority review,” it aims to take action on an application “within six months.”

In a news release, Moderna spokesperson Stéphane Bancel, chief executive officer of Moderna, said, “we anticipate more durable protection against variants of concern with mRNA-1273.214, making it our lead candidate for a Fall 2022 booster.” The FDA will meet June 28 to discuss vaccine modifications for later this year.

As previously mentioned, this exciting announcement comes shortly after the FDA authorized an antiviral treatment called Paxlovid for emergency use treatment of “mild-to-moderate COVID-19” cases. Studies conducted by the drugmaker showed that Paxlovid was nearly “90 percent effective at cutting the risks of getting hospitalized or dying because of COVID,” for those who are unvaccinated, as reported in a previous POPSUGAR article. (To learn more about Paxlovid, you can find more answers here.)

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin Show Very Rare PDA During NYC Date

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin’s years-long private romance has very rarely been documented by photographers. But yesterday, paparazzi managed to capture the couple out for a day date in New York City being affectionate. Johnson held onto her boyfriend’s arm as they went for a walk in Soho. Both were dressed casually, Johnson in a pink print top, open pink button-up, and dark pants. She wore her hair down straight and her blunt bangs center parted.

    TheImageDirect.com

Martin and Johnson were first reported to be dating 2017. Johnson gave a little detail about their relationship to ELLE UK earlier this year. “We’ve been together for quite a while, and we go out sometimes, but we both work so much that it’s nice to be at home and be cozy and private,” she said. “Most of the partying takes place inside my house.” That was the only statement she’s made about their dynamic.

She did speak candidly about how she feels like she toes the line between old and young because of her Hollywood upbringing. Johnson is the granddaughter of legendary actress Tippi Hedren and daughter of actors Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.

“I feel both 48 and 26,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of life in my life. I had a lot of life really young, so I think I feel older.”

She added that her calmness now doesn’t exactly come from her folks. “Well, my parents are… I don’t think I get it from them, they were wild when I was growing up,” she said, referring to their ’90s partying. “I think maybe I’m guarded, and that comes off as serene.”

Congenital Syphilis Is on the Rise, and It Has Serious Consequences For Infants

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are on the rise in the US, which is news no one ever wants to hear. Case numbers are up for both gonorrhea and syphilis, including congenital syphilis, which is syphilis passed onto a fetus before birth — an area of particular concern. The CDC reports that case numbers for congenital syphilis tripled from 2016 to 2020, leaping from 641 confirmed cases in the US to 2,148. Out of context, the numbers by themselves don’t tell the full story — 2,148 is, after all, a fraction of the more than 3.6 million babies born in the US in 2020. But the spike has happened quickly and dramatically, and the disease itself comes with the possibility of severe consequences, including physical deformities and death.

The reasons for this surge are complex and include issues of prenatal-care access, systemic racism, and inadequate public-health messaging, Rosalyn Plotzker, MD, MPH, an assistant professor at the UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, says. The disease itself can be addressed through fairly straightforward clinical measures, but controlling the surge in congenital syphilis likely requires an approach as layered its causes.

What Is Congenital Syphilis, and What Are Its Symptoms?

Congenital syphilis occurs when “a fetus becomes infected with syphilis in utero,” Dr. Plotzker says, which happens when someone has syphilis during pregnancy and the bacteria is transmitted to the fetus via the placenta. The chances of a syphilis-positive person passing it on to a fetus during pregnancy depends on the stage of syphilis and how long the person has lived with it. Research says that people with early-stage syphilis are more likely to give birth to baby with congenital syphilis or experience a stillbirth than people with later-stage syphilis, who have had it for one to two years. The consequences of congenital syphilis vary widely but can be severe and life-threatening for the baby. (Note that untreated late-stage syphilis can also be life-threatening in adults, although it’s rare. Initial symptoms typically include sores around the area of infection, such as the genitals, and people with syphilis may later develop rashes, fever-like symptoms, and serious health problems, including blindness or paralysis.) Prior to birth, possible consequences of congenital syphilis include:

    • Pregnancy loss or stillbirth
    • Preterm birth
    • Abnormalities within almost every organ system of the infant, including the liver, spleen, lungs, blood, central nervous system (including the brain), bones, and skin (e.g., rashes and lesions)

With that said, most infants who are born with syphilis appear unaffected at birth, Dr. Plotzker notes. If left untreated, however, infants with congenital syphilis can develop “severe abnormalities” that may cause physical deformities, blindness, deafness, or death. “That’s why infants who were exposed to syphilis during pregnancy need to be tested at birth — even if they appear completely [healthy] — and treated as needed,” Dr. Plotzker says. The timing and types of symptoms vary among infants. Some may not test positive until several weeks after birth, so infants should have blood tests done every few weeks. Early signs include blisters on the hands and feet; bloody or pus-like leakage from the nose; rashes around the nose, mouth, and diaper area; and swollen lymph nodes.

    How Is Congenital Syphilis Treated?

As serious as the consequences of congenital syphilis can be, it is “very preventable” from a clinical standpoint, Dr. Plotzker says. Here’s how syphilis is detected and treated during and after pregnancy:

    • Early identification during pregnancy: Dr. Plotzker calls this the “mainstay” of congenital-syphilis prevention. Syphilis can be diagnosed during pregnancy through blood tests, which are done routinely at the first prenatal visit. “Everyone is recommended to be tested for syphilis at their first prenatal visit — and sometimes more frequently if there are risk factors,” Dr. Plotzker says. These risk factors including having unprotected sex, having sex with multiple partners, or being HIV positive.
    • Penicillin treatment during pregnancy: Injectable penicillin is the usual treatment for syphilis, with either one dose or three doses given to the pregnant person over three weeks. “If the central nervous system is involved, then IV penicillin is given as well over 10 to 14 [weeks],” Dr. Plotzker says. The penicillin treats both the pregnant person and the fetus. “When given correctly and at least a month before delivery, treatment is extremely effective, approaching 100 percent efficacy,” Dr. Plotzker says. “The earlier in prenatal syphilis is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome in terms of infant health.” Sexual partners may also need to be treated to prevent reinfection. For people with a penicillin allergy, antibiotics such as doxycycline and tetracycline may be used.
    • Postbirth treatment: After birth, an infant exposed to syphilis should be tested and treated again with penicillin (or with a different antibiotic, if they have penicillin allergies), if necessary.

Addressing the US Surge in Congenital Syphilis

A rise in congenital syphilis typically indicates two things, Dr. Plotzker says: higher rates of syphilis in the wider population and “limited or no prenatal-care access for the groups affected.” Lowering rates of congenital syphilis, therefore, means addressing both issues, starting with a preventative approach in the general population. This would include “expanded public-health programming that emphasiz[es] syphilis testing and treatment,” Dr. Plotzker says — ideally reaching all people who could contract syphilis, especially people who can become pregnant. Some simple syphilis-prevention strategies include using protection (such as a condom or a dental dam) during sex, getting tested regularly and especially whenever you have a new partner, and notifying past and present sexual partners if you do test positive.

Getting adequate prenatal care presents another set of issues. “For many people who have syphilis in pregnancy, multiple factors complicate their ability to enter prenatal care,” Dr. Plotzker says. In the US, obstacles to prenatal syphilis care include:

    • Difficulty securing transportation to appointments
    • Difficulty coordinating appointments
    • Fear of stigma due to housing instability, drug use, and/or poverty (all of which birthing parents of infants with congenital syphilis report struggling with)
    • Concern for legal consequences and impact on parental rights

“There’s also evidence that systemic racism plays a role . . . given major differences in rates of syphilis among Black [women] compared to other race and ethnicity groups,” Dr. Plotzker says. “That carries forward to [congenital syphilis], too.” A 2018 CDC study, for example, found that 37 percent of Black women who gave birth to a baby with syphilis received a diagnosis of syphilis in time to be treated — but never received adequate treatment. Only 24 percent of white mothers had the same experience. This a reflection of longstanding racial disparities in prenatal healthcare in the US, where (among many other issues) Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than are white women.

Many issues, then, contribute to the recent increase in congenital-syphilis cases. On an individual level, recommendations remain the same: get tested, receive treatment during and after pregnancy, and treat any sexual partners as well. More broadly, it’s about “creating prenatal-care models outside conventional ones (which aren’t working for several groups) that reach affected groups,” Dr. Plotzker says, as well as encouraging safe sexual-health practices in impacted communities to ensure that syphilis isn’t contracted by the pregnant person or their child. “[This] could have a big role in improving prenatal-care entry and detecting, treating, [and] preventing syphilis,” she says.

Kourtney Kardashian Is Not Happy With How The Kardashians Edited Her and Scott Disick’s Drama

On The Kardashians, the family’s new Hulu reality series, Kourtney Kardashian’s relationship with Travis Barker and the anguish it has caused Scott Disick, her ex-boyfriend and father of her children, have been major plot points. But in the latest episode of the show, Kardashian lamented to her friend Steph Shepherd that, in reality, the Disick drama is much more minor in her life, and the show is being editing in a way that misrepresents the situation.

“[Travis and I] film and have the best time ever, and then we’ve been watching the edits, and it’s been so annoying because they’re swirling us in with this Scott drama,” Kardashian told Shepherd, via BuzzFeed.

Kardashian was particularly upset with her relationship with Disick overshadowing her engagement during the episode Barker proposed to her. “While shooting our show, we are all executive producers, so we get to see cuts of the show and give notes on the episodes and make sure our stories are being told,” she said. “I am in one of the best places I’ve ever been in my life, and it’s time for our show to catch up.”

“That night [Barker proposed to me], I wasn’t like, ‘God, everyone’s such fucking assholes for bringing up this [Disick’s reaction] because it wasn’t a part of the night. It was like two seconds of the night. I didn’t even remember it until I saw a cut of the episode,” she added. (In the episode, Kendall Jenner accused Kardashian of not having sympathy for Disick and how he felt about her moving on and marrying Barker rather than him.)

In a confessional, Kardashian added that the way the show was edited is “enabling this old narrative and buying into something that doesn’t really exist.” She continued, “It should be an empowering episode about me getting out of toxic relationships and really having this fairytale love story that is my reality.”

With the Disick stuff in particularly, Kardashian told Shepherd, “I wish they would take that out and put it in the next episode, and give us our respect and let us have our moment. I’m like, ‘Why is the fairytale not being told? Like, how could this be taken negatively?’” She added that she and Disick “have been broken up for seven years,” and she’s “allowed to create new memories and new ways of doing things.”

Curve-Washing is the Illusion of Body Inclusivity

Precious Lee walks the Versace Spring/Summer 2021 show in Milan. Photography courtesy of Getty Images

The harmful marketing tactic turns size diversity into a fantasy.

Are we really in the age of size inclusivity? As more curvy models appear on catwalks, magazine covers and brand campaigns, it would seem the answer to that question is “yes.” But when we see the marketing tactics at play behind such progress, it becomes performative at best, and fatphobic at worst. The sad truth is, the promise to cater to all shapes and sizes is merely a ploy for many brands. And it’s been given a name: curve-washing.

The retail strategy is pervasive but sometimes hard to spot. Curve-washing is when brands use body-positive language, marketing and imagery to appear inclusive when they are, in fact, not. We often see this when brands use size-diverse models in ad campaigns or on runways without actually selling those same sizes.

“I’m seeing [curve-washing] everywhere,” TikTok creator @hannahleelifestyle said in a recent video, pointing to an ad from swimsuit brand Youswim. The company features plus-size models on their website, but only offers up to a size 14. “I’ve been getting more and more ads like this, and I want to shop these brands. So I click on it, waiting for my size, size 20, and none of them ever have it.”

The body inclusivity movement has become more powerful over the years, forcing the fashion industry to represent all sizes or face public scrutiny. But instead of doing the work to enact real change, some labels have turned to tokenism. We see this when luxury brands create pieces for plus-size models, influencers and celebrities, but not for their own customers.

Model Paloma Elsesser went viral at the top of 2022 for wearing the trending Miu Miu micro-mini skirt, but it was created specifically for her and not made available to shoppers. Lizzo often wears custom Moschino pieces on the red carpet, but the brand doesn’t offer anything bigger than XL (size 14). Versace made headlines for casting curve models like Precious Lee on the runway in 2020, but real customers can only purchase up to a size 12.

Writer Gina Tonic calls this tactic “fat baiting,” and argues that it’s actually worse than when brands are openly exclusionary. “For fat people thinking these brands might cater to them, the eventual and oh so predictable let down feels more crushing than stumbling across brands that only share images of thin people wearing their clothes,” she writes in Refinery29.

With curve-washing, fashion brands can continue to operate unchanged while being applauded for their so-called representation. Take Old Navy. The retailer recently scaled back its body inclusive size range in stores less than a year after it launched. The BodEquality project promised to create a body positive shopping experience by stocking sizes 0-28 in all storefronts. But now, larger sizes are once again relegated to the online store, with the brand reportedly citing demand and supply chain issues as the reason for this change.

In other instances, product lines that claim to be made specifically for plus-size shoppers often don’t actually offer a full range of sizes. For instance, H&M’s ‘Body Collection’ claims to be “all about embracing every body.” But dresses and tops from the collection top out at XXL, or a size 18. In comparison, Lizzo’s shapewear brand Yitty offers up to a size 28.

Size diversity in clothing is an important practice in undoing the longstanding exclusion of larger bodies in fashion. And in the supposed era of body acceptance, true activism doesn’t wash over the truth.

Tom Ford’s O’Connor trousers are in a league of their own in terms of comfort and attention to detail. If you’re a person who similarly prioritizes attention to detail in your life, these suit pants are worth a look.

You’re working with a slim cut, and mid-rise fit, making this 100% wool pant a classic and versatile addition to your closet. Adjustable waist tabs allow you to forego a belt for a more seamless look. Pair these trousers with the O’Connor slim-fit wool suit jacket for the wedding season, then leave the jacket at home when it’s time to put on a handsomeness clinic on the happy-hour circuit.

    Material: 100% wool | Size Range: IT 44-IT 58 | Inseam: 30-32 inches | Rise: Mid-rise | Care: Dry clean | Fit: Slim

Winter, spring, summer or fall, all you have to do is call. Excellent. Now that we’re all sharing some nice James Taylor energy together, let’s carry it through to your next pair of men’s pants courtesy of Closed and Pan-Ko Textile.

Virgin wool and a roomy fit should earn this classically edgy pair of men’s pants a slot in your regular rotation regardless of the season. Whether you’re dressing them up or opting for more of a smart casual look, consider this piece of wardrobe candy a must.

Material: Italian tropical wool | Size Range: 29/32-36/32 | Rise: Regular | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Loose

    Hear that? No? Listen closer.

There. Off in the distance. It’s the sad, ill-informed siren song of a pleat-hater. While pleats certainly had their biggest run in the ‘80s and ‘90s, the sartorial sound knew better than to let them go.

To that end, one of today’s finest specimens comes in the form of these variegated cords courtesy of Corridor. Their dark, versatile color and 100% cotton comfort should earn them a prominent place in your closet during mild fall weekends or whenever you feel like texturing up an otherwise basic t-shirt or button-down.

Material: 100% cotton | Size Range: 28-38 | Inseam: 28-32 inches | Rise: Standard | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Regular

Picture yourself lazing around a sandy beach bar. Or swinging on a hammock listening to Yacht Rock. Or swirling a stem of red on a windswept balcony in late summer.

    What are you wearing?

Damn right you’re wearing linen pants. And if you’re doing it right, you’re wearing Luca Faloni’s Lipari linen trousers. At your leisure-based disposal is the requisite button for aesthetics, but also an internal drawstring for covert comfort. And as with any fine linen, this Italian-made pair of men’s pants will soften over time. Say it with us: Like a fine wine, they’ll only get better with age.

Material: 100% linen | Size Range: 28-40 | Rise: Regular | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Tapered

You don’t need to wait for a special occasion to slap these Italian-bred chinos on your lower half. They’re made with luxurious (and relatively rare) triple-twisted cotton sourced from one of Italy’s finest mills, so we understand why you’d think that. But their approachable price point will keep you coming back to these slim and semi-slim beauties time and time again for any occasion.

Of course, you could dress them up with a complimentary jacket, but the more frequent play here might be to pair them with a button-down or neutral mock neck sweater. No matter your choice, there’s effortless ease about these chinos, though they still manage to maintain a thoughtful polish that’s hard to deny.

Material: Wool and Cashmere or Cotton | Size Range: EU44-EU52 | Rise: Medium-high | Care: Dry clean | Fit: Slim, semi-slim

If you’re going to walk the plank and wear cargo pants, they damn well better have some utility. Good news: this specimen has it in spades. First off, it can be men’s pants or shorts. Ports? Shants? Moving on…

They’re made with 75% recycled nylon fibers — among the materials in this sturdy pair of adventure-ready men’s pants are used fish nets and recycled carpet. To further bolster the ACG’s pedigree, the team behind the pants’ design and construction got their inspiration while exploring Smith Rock, one of Oregon’s rock climbing meccas.

This multi-functional pair of men’s pants is going to best suit the avid outdoorsman looking for 90% function, 10% form, and enough patience to brush off any remaining cargo-pant haters still roaming the earth. We’d like to see them try to navigate harrowing crags while carrying a sandwich in their quadricep pocket.

Material: Nylon, spandex, polyester | Size Range: XS-2XL | Inseam: 29 inches | Rise: Classic | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Standard

Little known fact about drawstring men’s pants: they don’t have to look anything like drawstring pants. Exhibit A: L’Estrange’s entry, which cleverly hides a stretch waistband and a drawstring beneath a dressed-up facade. Italian stretch cotton. Slim, tailored fit. Multiple colorways. Check, check and check.

The perfect soulmate for these men’s pants puts form and function on a level playing field. No one ever has to know how comfortable you are — it can be you and the 24 Trouser’s little secret.

Based in Barcelona, TwoThirds is a stalwart provider of high-quality eco-conscious wear. Among a myriad of other things, their emphasis on sturdy, built-to-last construction puts these light stretch chinos firmly on our list of best men’s pants.

The addition of stretch recycled cotton twill provides ample springiness, making these straight-cut men’s pants a good fit for the active guy who would rather make a subtle statement than join the masses in sweatpants and athletic shorts. Paired with a henley or a linen polo, you could easily don these on a casual date night as well.

Material: 50% recycled cotton, 47% recycled polyester and 3% other fibers | Size Range: Sm-XL | Rise: Mid-rise | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Regular

In keeping with the hidden drawstring theme, Percival’s cords are business on the outside, and party on the inside. Pair this navy pair of corduroys with anything from a handsome jacket to a basic t-shirt and you’d never know a drawstring was working hard behind the scenes to provide extra flex and comfort.

If you’re into looking your best in public while simultaneously feeling like you’re catching a movie in your living room, these are your pants. Don’t say we never shared any scandalous secrets with you.

Wax London takes pride in providing thoughtfully designed and constructed garments that just plain look and feel right. The Rinse jean doesn’t aim to reinvent the wheel. It just wants to be your denim go-to whenever the time and occasion is right. Which, turns out, is always.

The mid-wash and rinse-wash blue colorways are dark and moody enough to pair with almost anything your day and night can bring. Wax employs a slim, fitted silhouette here, which can easily transition from afternoons at the office to casual date nights to courtside hot dogs with the family. You know… jeans stuff.

Material: 100% cotton | Size Range: 28-38 | Rise: Regular | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Slim

Good news, thoughtful relaxers: turns out, that joggers don’t have to be slouchy. In fact, some joggers — especially this pair from A Day’s March — are anything but. Made from 100% cotton, these mid-rise leg blankets feature the requisite drawstring and elastic waistband. But don’t be fooled by the standard jogger trappings. Instead, make room for these in the “Unexpectedly Elevated” section of your closet.

A Day’s March has paired these cozy men’s pants with a matching crew neck and sweater, but a t-shirt and crisp pair of white sneakers is also a smartly casual look for when you’re running errands or catching a quick brunch. No wrong turns here.

Material: 100% organic cotton | Size Range: S-XL | Rise: Mid-rise | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Regular

Are these work pants made for hard labor in the factory? No. Are they made for hard labor on the brewery circuit? Closer. Probably. Maybe.

Anyway, yes, this fine, rugged specimen from Madrid-based Neutrale is built to last. That said, their unisex design and elevated price tag do err on the side of form over function. Whichever color collar you put on in the morning, this sturdy pair of men’s pants will see you through the day in comfortable style.

Material: 100% organic cotton | Size Range: XS-XL | Rise: Standard | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Regular

Quick, look in your closet. Bunch of gray and blue sweatpants in there? Thought so.

And while there’s nothing wrong with those trusty staples, it also never hurts to shake things up a bit when it comes to hunkering down with a good book or movie. Enter these handsome and cozy khaki sweatpants from Unrecorded. Yes, khaki sweatpants. The 100% organic, French terry knit kind.

Worn correctly — say, with great confidence and Unrecorded’s matching khaki sweater — you could even venture out into the world in these. We see stylish coffee runs in your future. Farmer’s market trips. Maybe even the occasional brunch. Send your gray sweatpants our regards.

Material: 100% organic cotton | Size Range: XS-XXL | Inseam: 28-30 inches | Rise: Regular | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Regular

For those about to lounge, we salute you. Especially if you’re doing it in these tailored pajama pants from Sleepy Jones that just ooze leisurely luxury. Sure, this is a set and not just men’s pants, but you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not completing the ensemble.

If you’re going in on these, go all in and opt for the paisley colorway to stand out in all the right ways. This cotton set is super plush and comfortable between the sheets, but — thanks to its tailored look — can easily transition to poolside brunch at the Airbnb or by the fire on a group ski trip. Repeat: paisley. Can’t stress that enough.

Material: 100% cotton | Size Range: XXS-XXL | Inseam: 34-35 inches | Rise: Regular | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Tailored

There are a lot of khaki options out there doing their best to break a tried and true mold. But there’s still something to be said for a no-frills, old-school pair of the closet staples. L.L. Bean is bringing you exactly that with this classic pair in a standard, straight-leg fit.

They’re cut from a wrinkle-free, stain-resistant, no-iron fabric, making them ideal for tossing in a suitcase without having to worry about ironing when you land. Whatever you do, just don’t call them dad khakis. Or do. But know that there are plenty of ways to pull these bad boys off with the right sweatshirt or jacket.

Material: 100% cotton | Size Range: 30-44 inches | Inseam: 28-34 inches | Rise: Regular | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Classic

Have you ever thought about how leather-pants-less you are right now? Who hasn’t, right? Seems like now is as good a time as any to start focusing on a solution.

    Oh look… a solution.

Just when you thought you’d never hear the words “banana” and “republic” strung together in a single sartorial sentence again, here comes Banana Republic with this basic yet beautifully constructed pair of leather pants. Though this is an expert-level garment to successfully pull off, Banana Republic makes it that much easier with this classic, straight-fit pair of black leather pants.

Start off easy by pairing them with a distressed hoodie on your morning coffee run. Then, if you’re feeling up for it, graduate to the bar or club with an oversized sweater or workwear jacket. This leather-forward journey is fraught with peril and missteps. No pressure, though.

    Material: 100% leather | Size Range: 28W-44W | Inseam: Regular 32 inches | Rise: Mid-rise | Care: Professional leather cleaner| Fit: Slim

Suitsupply continues to set the bar high for properly constructed garments at reasonable price points, and their Soho Trousers are no exception. Dress up these slim-fitting, pure wool workhorses however you like, be it with a jacket from Suitsupply’s Havana line or with a cautiously selected, tucked-in t-shirt.

The wool twill comes from Vitale Barberis Canonico, one of Italy’s oldest and most revered fabric mills — the very same mill that Ermenegildo Zegna calls home.

    Material: 100% wool | Size Range: 26-44S | Inseam: 32.5 inches | Rise: Mid-rise | Care: Dry clean | Fit: Slim

You know that special place in your closet where only the special things go? If so, make room. If not, time to carve out a little real estate for some of the best men’s pants to ever roam the earth. Yes, men’s pants can roam the earth. We checked.

Ireland’s revered house of tweed Magee 1866 does the heavy lifting with these versatile wool pants, which speaks volumes in and of itself. But Ralph Lauren goes one further with a timeless double-pleated front, plus a ticket pocket and refined-in-all-the-right-ways Glen plaid pattern. Jacket, turtle neck, you name it — these standards play nice with almost anything.

    Material: 100% wool | Size Range: 28-32 to 40-34 | Inseam: 34-35 inches | Rise: Mid-rise | Care: Dry clean | Fit: Regular

Though its wearer typically errs on one side or the other, a good pair of camouflage pants can transition from the deer blind to the skate park without skipping a beat. Todd Snyder fully embraces this assessment with his Japanese cotton chinos designed after a pair of fatigues that caught the eye of one of the company’s designers in a vintage shop.

From t-shirts to henleys to dark, neutral button-downs, the best men’s pants — these very much included — can be worn with just about anything. But keep in mind that the slim fit and relatively limited size range of these chinos means it isn’t for everyone.

Material: Japanese twill | Size Range: 28/32-32/34 | Rise: Regular | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Slim

Inspired by the military garb of French officers during World War II, these high-waisted, roomy leg sheaths should be considered by only the most expert of trousermen. Or should they? Turns out, these cotton twill standouts can be successfully pulled off by anyone with a surplus of confidence and but a modicum of sartorial wherewithal.

The key, as ever, is what you choose to pair them with. A tucked-in t-shirt or polo for the summer months. A crew neck sweater for chillier days. There are no wrong turns wherever this high-waisted road takes you as long as you wear them with confidence.

Material: Cotton or linen | Size Range: 28/30-38/34 | Inseam: 34-35 inches | Rise: High | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Wide

It takes confidence and the right ensemble cast to successfully pull off a pair of cropped pants. Allsaints makes it that much easier with their version — a slim-fitting, neutral-colored pair with two side buttons and an unlined leg.

Pair it with a t-shirt or mock neck sweatshirt and your favorite broken-in pair of shoes (maybe opt for a vegan sneaker to complete the look?) for a look that exudes just enough breezy confidence. No one has to know you put a lot of thought into it.

    Material: 100% cotton | Size Range: 28-36 inches | Inseam: 34-35 inches | Rise: Mid-rise | Care: Dry clean | Fit: Slim

Ivy Style icon J. Press pulls no punches when it comes to quality craftsmanship and fabrics. And while bespoke garments of every stripe are certainly an option here, don’t sleep on these classic chinos that come in nine color options.

Helping to nail the brand’s signature Ivy League style are these trousers’ flat front and unfinished hems. To complete the look, any button-down will do. And maybe throw in one of those old-school wooden tennis racquets while you’re at it. That, or definitely don’t.

Material: 100% cotton twill | Size Range: 30-44 | Inseam: 34-35 inches | Rise: Standard | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Classic

Tracksmith’s focus is on the runner, and its clothes are thoughtfully crafted with that pursuit in mind. That said, the Downeaster Pant can and should moonlight as a standout option for any of your athletic pursuits. These workout pants are made of 60% merino wool, so their natural sweat-wicking and odor-repelling qualities will be key during fall or winter workouts.

Pair them with Tracksmith’s Downeaster mid-layer or the Nor’Easter jacket for head-to-toe comfort and performance for the colder months. Bonus: they can easily pull double duty in style for your Sunday Netflix binges.

Material: 60% merino wool, 40% polypropylene | Size Range: S-XL | Inseam: 30.25-31.25 inches | Rise: Mid-rise | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Tapered leg

When you hear the words “elastic waist pants,” your mind likely goes to slouchy sweatpants or, worse yet, those tearaway numbers with the buttons down the side. For shame. We think your sartorial imagination should wander more toward this slim-fitting cotton and hemp specimen from Patagonia.

Though they’ve been designed with comfort in mind — hello, elastic waistband, adjustable drawstring, and light as air fabric — they’d feel just as at home during a stylishly dressed down coffee run.

Material: 76% cotton, 24% hemp | Size Range: S-XXL | Inseam: 30-34 inches | Rise: Regular | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Slim

And there you were, at the top of Mount Katahdin after an epic through-hike of the Appalachian Trail. Your camera roll is filling up. Your technical gear is being technical. Your fleece-lined men’s pants are merely a base layer. That’s… one way to deploy fleece-lined men’s pants.

Another is to slap on Duer’s après-ski-friendly base layer cleverly disguised as a handsome pair of jeans. Fleece, denim, a water-repellent coating, and just the right amount of stretch team up to provide you with your new fall and winter go-to for fireside shenanigans.

Material: 81% cotton, 13% polyester, 4% nylon, 2% elastane | Size Range: 30-30/40-34 | Inseam: Triple stitched | Rise: Regular | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Relaxed

Take one look at these beflowered men’s pants and you know you’re about to take a one-way trip to Leisureville. Bonobos nails the beach aesthetic without beating a dead horse. The drawstring is hidden. The button pops in all the right ways. The calming blue is faded to perfection. And did we mention those flowers?

Though these men’s pants are cotton, you get a breezy linen look that would play nicely with a linen button-down, a loose polo or your favorite t-shirt.

Material: 98% cotton, 2% elastane | Size Range: XS-XXL | Inseam: 27.5-33.5 inches | Rise: Standard | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Relaxed

What constitutes a pair of “summer men’s pants” is entirely up to you. But a solid, versatile pair should have a few key elements. Take the Vuori Aim Pant, for example. It’s super lightweight and airy thanks to its polyester-cotton blend, and a hint of elastane allows for a cozy four-way stretch.

These men’s pants are ready for poolside cocktails at dusk or the beach on a breezy day. Their tailored fit makes them the chameleon of summer men’s pants and they’re always up for anything your day can throw at them.

    Material: 67% polyester, 25% cotton, 8% elastane | Size Range: 28-38 | Inseam: 32 inches | Rise: Mid-rise | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Tailored

With the Saturday Pant, Marine Layer set out to make a pair of men’s pants that… well, don’t look like men’s pants at all. Their five-pocket design is meant to resemble jeans more than, say, a chino. The slim option goes the extra mile with an elastic waistband, plus they’re garment-dyed to give them a more worn-in, seamless look.

And though they’re slim men’s pants, Marine Layer doesn’t get too precious about it, meaning there’s still plenty of room to move. The slim-but-not-too-slim cut also adds to their versatility — you can wear the Saturday anywhere.

Material: 69% cotton, 29% Tencel Lyocell, 2% lycra | Size Range: S-2XL | Inseam: 27.5-30.25 inches | Rise: Standard | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Slim

What’s old is, of course, always new again. In other words, you had to know this was coming: You must now once again reckon with flared jeans. They’re specific, sure. But the good news is that anyone can pull them off with the right shirt, shoes and (most importantly) attitude.

Hearkening back to flared pants of yore, this understated pair from COS features a slim silhouette and a high waist. Pair it with a tucked-in tee or baggy sweater to complete your carefree yet totally put-together look.

Material: 100% cotton | Size Range: 30R-38R | Inseam: 34-35 inches | Rise: High | Care: Machine wash | Fit: Slim

When chosen wisely, these men’s pants can be every bit as versatile as a pair of chinos or even jeans. Case in point: Todd Snyder’s Sutton Trouser. While they would of course look fantastic as part of a suit, the neutral navy, charcoal color and tailored fit open the door to countless other looks.

Try them out with anything from a solid-colored t-shirt to a sweater to a white button-down. Its pinstripes will piggyback on your personality in all the right ways.

Material: Wool-cotton | Size Range: 30/32-36/32 | Inseam: 34-35 inches | Rise: Moderate | Care: Dry clean | Fit: Tailored

    FAQ

      • If you’re looking at anything other than standard XS through XL sizes, chances are you’re looking at two numbers — the waist length and the leg length. If you’re looking at a size 34/36, for example, the “34” represents the length of the waist in inches, and the “36” represents the inseam of the pants in inches.

        • To see what size pants will be the perfect fit for you, start by rounding up a flexible measuring tape. Pull up your shirt so that no fabric sits between your skin and the measuring tape, then wrap the tape around the thinnest part of your waist (usually just above the belly button) with your stomach relaxed.

Record your waist size in inches according to the tape measure. Most clothing companies will have a conversion table available online — find the table and match your measured waist size to the brand’s recommended size from the chart.

          • How to cuff your pants is a personal decision and should be driven by your preferences and sartorial proclivities. Generally speaking, cuffs work well with a fitted, straight leg pant paired with a focused shoe as opposed to a bulky boot or wider option. Before deciding on a cuff type (tight roll or wide cuff, for example), look at your outfit as a whole and hone in on the direction from there.

More Than 90 Survivors of Larry Nassar’s Abuse Are Suing the FBI For $1 Billion

Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman and Maggie Nichols testify at Larry Nassar trial

Gymnasts Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, Samantha Roy, and Maggie Nichols are among dozens of women who are seeking to sue the FBI for failing to investigate allegations of misconduct against Larry Nassar earlier. In 2018, Nassar, a former team doctor for USA Gymnastics, was sentenced to 175 years in prison for multiple counts of criminal sexual assault after a difficult trial period that detailed over two decades of sexual abuse. Over 90 women plan to file lawsuits against the FBI, and their varying claims total to over $1 billion in damages.

“If the FBI had simply done its job, Nassar would have been stopped before he ever had the chance to abuse hundreds of girls, including me.”

The lawsuits are coming shortly after the Justice Department’s decision not to bring charges against two former FBI agents who were accused of mishandling the investigation, following a report from the department’s inspector general criticizing how the case was handled. According to the inspector general, in July 2015, USA Gymnastics reported abuse allegations from three gymnasts who had been assaulted by Nassar to local FBI agents, but the FBI did not conduct a formal investigation or alert Michigan authorities.

Nassar wasn’t charged until over a year later in November 2016, after Michigan State University police received a complaint in August. The inspector general’s report revealed over 70 athletes were abused by Nassar between July 2015 and August 2016, The New York Times reported. “If the FBI had simply done its job, Nassar would have been stopped before he ever had the chance to abuse hundreds of girls, including me,” Roy, who was a gymnast at the University of Michigan, said in a statement.

“The FBI knew that Larry Nassar was a danger to children when his abuse of me was first reported in September of 2015,” NCAA national champion gymnast Nichols said in a statement. “For 421 days they worked with USA Gymnastics and USOPC to hide this information from the public and allowed Nassar to continue molesting young women and girls. It is time for the FBI to be held accountable.” Under law, the FBI has six months to respond to the claims.

In December 2021, a settlement was reached in one of the fallout cases from the scandal. Hundreds of survivors of Nassar’s abuse agreed to a $380 million settlement with USA Gymnastics and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee. The amount was split among 500 gymnasts, including Biles, Raisman, and Maroney.

Inside Pete Davidson’s Relationship With Kim Kardashian and Her Kids—and Their Plans for the Future

Pete Davidson sparked media attention when he was photographed holding his girlfriend Kim Kardashian’s six-year-old son Saint West’s hand while out shopping at The Grove without Kardashian there. Now, multiple sources spoke to E! about Davidson’s burgeoning relationship with Kardashian’s four children along with Davidson’s future plans with them and Kardashian. Davidson has been dating Kardashian since the fall.

Kardashian is now very comfortable with Davidson spending time with eight-year-old North, Saint, four-year-old Chicago, and three-year-old Psalm without her. “Pete and Kim’s relationship has become more serious, and Kim feels very comfortable allowing Pete to be around the kids and has spent a lot of time with them recently,” a source told E!. “Kim didn’t want to force anything and loves that it has been a natural progression. She loves that she can trust Pete to take them to do activities on his own.”

Davidson being so good with Kardashian’s children has really helped their romantic relationship continue to flourish, the source added: “It takes a lot of stress off of her and their relationship. She thinks it’s really cute and is grateful how seamless it’s been. Pete is really good around the kids, and they all love him.”

A second source added that Davidson is being mindful of Kardashian’s co-parenting arrangement with her ex-husband Kanye West. Davidson “wants to make sure everyone is comfortable,” that source said. “He’s been very respectful with boundaries. [He’s] hanging out with the kids more frequently [but] at the same time, he knows his place and gives them space to do family things without him. They all love spending time together and it’s been great for them to start to get to know one another.”

Davidson, himself a “big kid at heart,” the source said, “has ideas of things he wants to do with them. [He] can’t wait to make it all happen.” With his and Kardashian’s relationship and future generally, “It’s all going very well.”

Carolyn Murphy Talks Modeling in the ’90s, Sleepovers With Karl Lagerfeld, and Her Latest Fashion Project

    style points

Style Points is a weekly column about how fashion intersects with the wider world.

Before it took her to the runways of Tom Ford-era Gucci and Karl Lagerfeld-era Chanel, Carolyn Murphy’s romance with fashion began with a humble pair of Care Bears jeans. Growing up in small-town Florida, she says, “I wasn’t really exposed [to fashion] outside the local shopping mall.” But she began re-working clothes at a young age, taking those ursine mascots and re-stitching them onto a new pair when she outgrew the first one. “Or I would try to re-create the Polo label with embroidery”—long before she ever set foot on Ralph Lauren’s runway. She also looked to her grandmother, who would hand-sew her family clothes complete with labels that read “Made with love by Nana.”

“It’s because of modeling that I have an understanding of fashion,” she says now.
“Working so closely with designers, doing shows where we’re at these lengthy fittings, but also seeing their tailors at work, especially during couture. It was always right there, and I paid attention. I listened and learned so much,” she says. Still, “I didn’t really intend on getting into the design world myself.”

But lately, she’s been doing just that. After collaborating with the L.A.-based line Mother on an upcycled range last year, Murphy has yet another design foray coming out. And this one is quite personal. She worked with ADEAM designer Hanako Maeda on a collection celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the brand, inspired by Murphy’s early modeling days in Japan. With both projects, “I of course jumped at the chance, especially because they’re more conscientious lines,” she says. The collection will be available on the brand’s website and in a Madison Avenue pop-up, open through July.

Murphy sent Maeda an inspiration board of things she loved, including art and ceramics made by Japanese female artisans. She also drew on the clothes she wore in her early modeling career in Japan. “In the early ’90s, it was kind of Paris or bust,” she explains. “I did try that my senior year of high school and it wasn’t really for me. I just said, ‘Well, if this is what modeling is, I’m not going to walk around in minidresses and go out to clubs all night.’” When she moved to Japan to continue her modeling career, she found the terrain to be “more my speed. It was a great work ethic. I knew what to expect. I was working six days a week, sometimes two or three jobs a day, but that’s where I thrive.”

The relocation was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with the country, its history, and the variety of its natural landscapes. Not to mention its fashion. Murphy, glad to shed her minidresses, carved out a style niche: “pared-down classic pieces, neutral colors. Things that you can depend on and you can always have in your wardrobe.” She favored simple, utilitarian pieces from “no-name stores,” which she has gone on to re-interpret for the ADEAM collection, from foldover shorts to a sleeveless dress inspired by a trench she owned back then.

With Murphy in L.A. and Maeda in Tokyo, the design process was done remotely. “It was such an eye-opening experience to see the pieces in her wardrobe that stood the test of time,” says Maeda. “Carolyn has worked with so many designers and experienced different trends, so she has a very refined eye for pieces that are timeless.” Maeda adds that the two wanted to pay tribute to the way “people in Japan revere and live in harmony with nature,” using sustainable textiles and yarns for the collection, including recycled cotton cashmere and organic cotton denim. Many of the materials were locally sourced. Says Murphy: “I love that part of it, receiving the swatches and saying, ‘Okay, this is coming from this farm and this family in Japan, it’s been three generations, looming and dyeing.’ Storytelling is such a big part of this collection, which again, makes it more sentimental.”

Murphy, who was recently honored at the Sustainable Style Awards, is quick to note, “I’m definitely not on a soapbox…I am not the sustainability queen. I’m also not the information source when it comes to that. There are a lot of other people out there who are really spearheading that. I just choose to live a very simple, back-to-basics lifestyle.”

She estimates that three-quarters of her wardrobe is vintage. “When I do buy something, it’s something I’m going to have for a while, and it’s not going to be disposable.” Murphy found herself becoming increasingly distressed “having raised a daughter who was shopping a lot of these fast-fashion places where I was just disgusted, watching her and her peers. I was working with some of these brands intimately, [and] I said I wouldn’t work with them until they agreed to do something that was more in the sustainable realm. I think we all have to push each other.”

Speaking of sustainability, Murphy did indeed clock Bella Hadid’s re-wear of the Tom Ford-era Gucci dress she originally wore in the fall 1996 show: “Oh my God, I got so excited. In fact I reposted a photo and then I took it down 10 minutes later because I was, like ‘Wait, what am I doing?’ I get self-conscious about it. But that was my initial reaction. I was so excited. She looked beautiful. And that’s what I said in my post, was Bella looked so beautiful in this dress and how nice it is to see off the runway and on her, 25 years later. She’s actually one of the current models that really seems to not only love fashion, but goes deep.”

That fashion moment brought her back to a heady period of time. “You could feel the excitement at the shows. It was palpable,” she recalls. When she watched House of Gucci, “I was laughing, because I just remember being there,” hearing this young Texan phenom tell her how much, with her blond hair and golden skin, she resembled his mother.

Tom Ford wasn’t the only designer who made an impact on her. “The first time I took a private plane was with Karl Lagerfeld. We had shot the Lagerfeld campaign at his house in Hamburg. I had never seen anything like it. It was like a castle. Then we fly to Paris, and he didn’t want me staying in a hotel. He wanted me to stay with him,” she says, remembering how excited she was to spend the night where Naomi, Christy, and Linda had before her. Their bond continued for decades, with Lagerfeld sending Murphy and her mother thoughtful gifts. (“You could say that you loved a certain perfume, and next thing you were getting it sent to your house.”)

She also remembers closing out a Versace couture show as the bride. “I stumbled on the runway and stormed off crying. [Gianni] sent me flowers to my hotel later, with a note saying, ‘I know our marriage is off to a bad start, and it’s our honeymoon night. Please join me for dinner?’”

The thing she misses most about those days is the absence of social media, which “has added this other layer of self-promotion. I’m the worst when it comes to Instagram. I do try. I have my daughter who gives me pointers. What I miss about it is I always prided myself on having that healthy separation. And I think that was valued at some point, that you weren’t out at every party, hobnobbing with every photographer and editor. Now, there’s nothing sacred. Everything is just so exposed and exploited. I’m hoping that it reels back a little bit.”

She’s nostalgic for a pre-internet world in other ways, too. When working with the likes of Steven Meisel and Pat McGrath, they would “come in with trunks filled with books, or they’d say, ‘Go home and watch this film tonight.’ There was a real education. Now you just click a button, see an image. There’s no real connection. There’s no finding you there.” Murphy had the luxury of getting to develop her style in an analog world, and with this collection, she’s officially sharing the wealth.

Jean Paul Gaultier’s “Naked” Dress + Other Highlights from FASHION’s Cake Mix Party

    Photography by George Pimentel Photography

The start of Toronto Pride, a colourful dress code and all you can eat desserts were the perfect ingredients to celebrate the launch of FASHION’s summer issue.

At FASHION’s Cake Mix party held June 9 at Space on King, the dessert references hit as soon as one stepped into the gallery-like venue.  Guests were met with a larger-than-life cake slice sculpture, melting “icing” decals offered the perfect photo backdrop, and upstairs an OGX-branded wall of candy floss provided a sugary treat.

Held to celebrate the release of FASHION’s Summer 2022 issue starring Symone, and the beginning of Toronto Pride, Cake Mix brought together the city’s stylish glitterati, the LGBTQIA2S+ community and cake lovers of all kinds. The event was also a fundraiser for the Rainbow Railroad, with a live auction for a painting by Terran McNeely.

Entertainment and edibles included petite red velvet pancakes, a tarot card reading session, an impromptu blowout (thank you Chatters Hair Salon!), and an energetic performance by Juno-nominated artist Ceréna. And maybe it was just the fragrance from all the food, but the air in the room somehow seemed sweeter.

Guests were encouraged to dress colourfully with Valentino pink the most popular hue. Neon was another favourite, most decadently worn by Miss Moco during her performance on the BOSS stage, alongside DJ Karim Olen Ash. However, the best-dressed award of the night goes to the influencer, model and activist Myles Sexton. Posing for pix in the Jean Paul Gaultier room, they wore a dress screen printed with a naked woman’s body by the designer.

What Shoes To Wear With Jeans: A Complete Guide To Not Putting A Foot Wrong

Chinos, joggers and cargo pants have all made their respective plays for pride of place in our rotations, but jeans are still the go-to, go-anywhere coverings for most men’s getaway sticks. For all but the most formal of offices and life events, denim is a no-brainer. You can’t go wrong. Can you?

Oh, you can. You really can. And one of the most face plant-precipitating stumbling blocks is selecting footwear with entirely the wrong DNA for the jeans in question. Wear them with too-smart shoes, and you’ll look like you’re going to a bad nightclub. Wear them with flip-flops, and, and you’ll look confused, at best. Those are just two ends of a broad misstepping spectrum.

Matching what shoes to wear with jeans needn’t be an unnavigable minefield. You just have to follow the right directions. This is the FashionBeans guide to what pairs go with what, well, pairs.

What Shoes To Wear With Jeans

If you’re looking for the best shoes to wear with jeans, here’s our complete round up of every pair of footwear acceptable with your favorite pair of denim.

    Derbies With Jeans

The function of jeans has shifted since they were invented, or at least patented, in 1873. These days, the closest that many of us get to manual labour is hammering a keyboard. But wherever they sit on the broad denim formality spectrum, jeans are fundamentally still workwear: practical, utilitarian, not smart. So even though you might wear leather, formal shoes to work, there’s a strong risk of incongruity between, say, a sleek, polished Oxford and rugged selvedge. You could perhaps pull off Oxfords with smart jeans: slim, black jeans and worn with no turn-ups (which break up the streamline and thus have a casualising effect, as they do on tailoring.) But Derbies, which generally feature a chunkier profile, are a better bet for counterbalancing denim.

Black Derbies in particular though are still towards the smart end of the even broader shoe formality spectrum, so could look a bit muddled with mid-blue jeans: you’d almost be safer going to the stonewashed, distressed extreme to dial up the subculture overtones.

    Brogues With Jeans

They’re considerably more formal than the trainers that most of us schlep around in given the option, but brogues are nevertheless a relatively casual smart shoe to wear with jeans, if that isn’t a contradiction in terms, originally designed for farmers to yomp through muddy fields. That’s why they’re generally more suited to tweedy rural weddings than sharp urban nuptials, and business-casual rather than corporate boardroom.
As a general rule, sleek, minimally detailed brogues will skew more formal; chunky, hole-punched ones will skew more casual. Colour is another factor that affects which jeans your brogues will or won’t work with, going from black at the formal end and getting gradually lighter towards the other.

After a failsafe combination? While relatively casual tan brogues are unsuitable for smart navy tailoring – please stop doing this – they pair pleasingly with smart-casual indigo denim. Bonus points if the shoes’ shade picks out the jeans’ stitching.

    Sneakers With Jeans

Unless you try really hard, it’s almost impossible to put a foot wrong with minimalist sneakers.

when it comes to shoes to wear with jeans. Sleek, low-profile styles go with pretty much any variety of denim except, that is, for the rightly maligned boot cut jeans.

If really committed to tripping up, then silhouette is where you can come a cropper. This is typically more of a concern with lighter canvas styles that can be deficient in the heft required to counterbalance heavy-duty jeans, whether straight- or wide-legged. Conversely, the combination of long, thin high-tops and tapered or skinny jeans can make big feet look positively clownish.

With a pair of sneakers that are white, the main consideration – assuming that you want to incorporate them into more formal ‘fits is keeping them clean. (The same applies to all shoes you wear with jeans, but it’s less noticeable with non-white pairs that didn’t start out that colour.) Pass the stain protector and keep those white sneakers shiny.

    Penny Loafers With Jeans

Another style of shoes to wear with jeans that looks money with most anything, including denim: penny loafers are an adaptable Ivy League staple that has even found a new currency among sneakerhead streetwear fans.
Tread carefully, mind. The penny loafers’ low vamp (that’s the section of upper that covers the front of the foot) combined with a wide leg opening can make your feet look weirdly stubby. So opt for jeans that are tapered and cropped or pinrolled.

    Monk Straps With Jeans

Monk straps burnt brightly during the social media-driven ‘hashtag menswear’ phase of the mid- to late-naughties then seemingly out. However, they’re still a solid footwear option, combining some of the formality of an Oxford with swashbuckling dash. Indeed, the hardware lends them a certain casual quality that coordinates well with riveted denim.

Again, silhouette and colour are the principal considerations. There’s something inherently right and faintly Italianate about a mid-brown dub-monk with a mid-to-light blue pair of jeans: close your eyes, and you could almost be stunting for a street style photographer at Pitti Uomo.

Don’t sleep on texture either, as subbing out the shine of leather for the nap of suede will step them down in formality a notch. (Do spectrums have notches? Rungs?)

    Chelsea Boots With Jeans

Suffice to say the now established principles of silhouette (chunky is more casual than sleek), colour (tan is more casual than brown is more casual than black) and texture (suede is more casual than leather) all apply here.

It’s worth pointing out that black leather Chelsea boots with a sleek profile can skew almost as formal as Oxfords, and therefore risk jarring with straight-legged (and -laced) indigo denim. Turn it up to eleven with some black or grey skinny jeans though, and suddenly you’re in a band.
The kicker with Chelsea boots is the heel: if it’s stacked like Bruno Mars’ bodyguard, then that vertiginous preciousness will only really harmonise with the kind of tight denim that helps you hit those high notes. On the other foot, a crepe sole takes some of the dainty edge off, making them more tonally appropriate with a distressed pair of jeans.

    High-Tops With Jeans

You saved up the cash, queued around the block, and finally you’ve got your hands on the latest drop. So it seems a shame to cover your high-tops up with your kecks. The answer is obvious: don’t.

Assuming you don’t want to buy shorter jeans just for days when you might hit the b-ball court, or hem an existing pair (professionally, or with a pair of scissors if you’re into that frayed look), simply roll them to just above the top of your sneaks. Never more than twice, though, otherwise the resulting thickness will kill your vibe altogether.

    Desert/Chukka Boots With Jeans

As in tailoring, the more of it you have (waistcoat , top hat etc.), the more formal. The reverse is also true, the less of it, the – guess what? – less formal.

Suede desert boots, in particular, feature softer uppers and sole than other footwear styles, but they’re still rugged. Unsurprising for footwear worn by British soldiers in North Africa in WWII.

Able to take a kicking, and look better for it, they can be worn with everything from shorts to suits in the right circumstances, but almost always they are a great style of shoes to wear with a pair of jeans, smart or casual. Because of their versatility, there’s no real hard-and-fast rule, but rolling them up to flash some covered ankle is strongly encouraged.

    Work/Hiking Boots With Jeans

Although thanks to the ebb and flow of trends it’s possible to buy refined versions for exorbitant prices, work or hiking boots naturally fall into the casual lumberjack camp. For that reason, it makes sense to play up the workwear when it comes to shoes to wear with jeans, whether indigo or faded, in a way that suggests you’ve done a day’s work in your life.

Chunky boots also provide ballast for wider-legged denim; overly slim or skinny jeans on the other hand will contrast too harshly, which may well be your desired effect, but won’t fool anyone into thinking that you’re genuinely handy or outdoorsy.

Also, unless you’re going for the skinny-stacked look, your jeans will need to be on the shorter side, or rolled up: if you want to exude maximum vintage vibes, try a single oversized cuff.

    Dad Trainers With Jeans

The unlikely resurgence of dad trainers (if they were ever cool) has been in conjunction with a similar shift in denim, which their chunkiness complements. So why break from the normcore? Sneakers with jeans are a yes in our book.

To finish the DILF look that’s dad’s in latest fashions, in case you were wondering opt for the type of jeans you grew up watching your old man wash the car in. That’s straighter, wider and with a higher-rise, preferably in stonewash. Daddy cool.

Teddi Mellencamp Shared a Photo of Her Cellulite, and It’s Exactly What We Need More Of

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Teddi Mellencamp is clapping back at body shamers. Following the MTV Music Awards, where she sported a short hot-pink dress, Mellencamp showed off her look on Instagram and emphasized the importance of body positivity.

“For anyone messaging me that I shouldn’t have worn this dress to @mtvawards because you can see my cellulite. Guess what?! I am proud of it and most of us have it. Let’s normalize the reality,” she captioned the Instagram post. “I work hard to for my mental and physical body to feel good. (For those messaging that the outfit looks like I am auditioning for DWTS – you aren’t wrong. It does 🤣🤣🤣 💃🏼 ).”

Cellulite is a skin condition that causes “lumpy, dimpled flesh” most often on the thighs, hips, butt, and abdomen, per the Mayo Clinic. It’s very common, with the phrase “how to get rid of cellulite” searched googled 22,000 times per month. It also in no way affects your health.

How much cellulite someone has is dependent on a myriad of factors, including genetics, sex, age, and skin thickness. While the condition is often used as a measurement of how fit someone is, cellulite is absolutely normal for all body types: according to the Cleveland Clinic, 80 to 90 percent of women have it.

Fortunately, celebs like Mellencamp — who show off their cellulite without retouching or filters — help contribute to a healthier perspective. And, based on the comments on Mellencamp’s Instagram post, it’s clear that many agree that cellulite shouldn’t be so stigmatized. Candace Marino, aka @thelafacialist on Instagram, commented, “you look great! Dress is fire & over 90% of women have cellulite!” Fellow Bravo reality star Steph Hollman wrote, “You look amazing. Most women (including myself) have cellulite. Body shaming has to stop.”

Marino is right: body shaming has to stop, as does commenting on other people’s appearances. While it’s OK to have insecurities and not feel confident about yourself 100 percent of the time, it’s not OK to tear others down. Skin conditions like cellulite are completely normal, and if you look around beyond the filters and Photoshop, you’ll see that most of us have it.

Everything We Know About Netflix’s Addams Family Series, Wednesday

Gomez and Morticia Addams’s demon spawn—sorry, daughter—is finally getting the spotlight she deserves. Wednesday Addams, the death-obsessed teen whose idea of a lazy summer Friday involves electrocuting her brother, is headed to Netflix later this year, with You actress Jenna Ortega in the lead role. We don’t know much yet about just how macabre Netflix will go in its depiction of everyone’s favorite goth, but given that Tim Burton is attached to direct, we have an idea of the show’s grim-meets-kooky aesthetic.

Wednesday, billed by Netflix as “a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery,” will follow the Addams’s only daughter as she attends the boarding school Nevermore Academy, where she juggles her newfound psychic powers and a supernatural murder mystery connected to her own family. Ahead, everything we know about Wednesday’s solo treatment.

When will the show come out?

Although an official release date has yet to be announced, Netflix hinted the series is “coming soon” in a new teaser. IndieWire reports that likely means sometime in 2022.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

    Who’s in the cast?

Apart from Ortega in the lead role, Netflix has announced a number of other cast members so far:

    • Catherine Zeta-Jones will appear throughout the series as Morticia, the Addams family matriarch and Wednesday’s mother.
    • Victor Dorobantu will play Thing, the severed hand and servant seen in the teaser trailer.
    • George Burcea will play Lurch, the towering family manservant.
    • Isaac Ordonez will play Gomez and Morticia’s son, Pugsley.
    • Luis Guzmán will guest star as Gomez, the Addams family patriarch and Wednesday’s father.
    • Other actors with as-yet-unannounced roles include Gwendoline Christie, Jamie McShane, Emma Myers, Percy Hynes White, Moosa Mostafa, Thora Birch, Hunter Doohan, Riki Lindhome, Joy Sunday, Georgie Farmer, and Naomi Ogawa.
    • Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in the early ’90s films The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, will also appear in an undisclosed role.

      Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams.

      MATTHIAS CLAMER/NETFLIX

      What is Wednesday based on?

Like the films, TV series, and theatrical adaptations before it, Wednesday is based partly on the New Yorker cartoons first introduced by Charles Addams in 1938, further popularized in the 1960s by the sitcom adaptation The Addams Family. Based on the latter’s success, the family’s misadventures quickly became a franchise: A cartoon series arrived in the 1970s, followed by The Addams Family live-action movie in 1991, for which a sequel, Addams Family Values, landed in 1993. Both live-action and animated versions of the family continued the legacy, and then a 2010 Broadway musical, The Addams Family Musical, arrived to lackluster critical reception. Finally, two animated films were released in 2019 and 2021. This large canon serves as the backbone of Wednesday.

Will there be more than one season?

No word yet from Netflix, but given the buzz around Wednesday’s launch, there’s a solid chance it’ll be a hit—and in that case, expect season 2 news forthcoming.

      This post will be updated.

The Best Made In Britain Shoe Brands

We Brits have plenty to complain about – our weather sucks, we’re crap at almost every sport we invent and the last time we won Eurovision Nintendo had just launched the N64. But one arena in which we can hold our heads high is British-made footwear.

With a dedication to premium materials and time-tested production methods, this industry has stayed true to its heritage, keeping UK operations going strong despite economic struggles. Invest, and you’ll be joining a long line of well-shod men, from Winston Churchill to Frank Sinatra, that stretches back well over a hundred years.

What’s more, demand for traditionally-made, reassuringly sturdy shoes shows no sign of falling out of favour. In the latest available stats from industry vanguards the British Footwear Association, sales climbed 3.6 per cent in 2017, reaching 5.8m pairs.

Built to last a lifetime and complement everything from bespoke suits to fuss-free weekend looks, it’s easy to see why the storied home of British shoemaking, Northamptonshire, is enjoying a renaissance in home-grown manufacturing.

      Northamptonshire: The Home Of Shoemaking

The English town of Northampton was once the shoemaking capital of Europe, with around 2,000 individual manufacturers working there towards the end of the nineteenth century. The town’s central position and proximity to 11 rivers running through the county made it an obvious place for firms to set up business.

“There was a leather industry in Northamptonshire long before there was a shoe trade here,” says Loake managing director Andrew Loake. “Our understanding is that there were plentiful oak forests in the county and oak bark was used for tanning leather. So it was a natural progression for the shoe trade to develop in the same area.”

The subsequent availability of leather and Northampton’s strategic importance led to it becoming a centre of military bootmaking, with demand soaring due to the Napoleonic Wars of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

In recent years, this demand has returned, much to the joy of John Lobb site director Stephen Johnson. “We established our factory on Oliver Street, Northampton in 1993, but demand has increased dramatically to the point that we are now producing over 30,000 pairs a year – and that means we have had to expand the premises.”

A Sign Of Quality: Goodyear Welted Construction

The most famous shoemaking technique is the ‘Goodyear welt’. Invented in 1869 by Charles Goodyear Jr, the process is the footwear equivalent of the off-side rule: until somebody sits you down and talks you through it, it’s quite hard to understand.

The method involves around 75 individual components and 200 separate operations that, on average, takes eight weeks to complete.

The upper part of the shoe is shaped over the wooden last and fastened on by sewing a leather, linen or synthetic strip – known as the ‘welt’ – to the inner and upper sole. The welt forms a cavity which is then filled with a cork material.

The sole is then attached to the welt of the shoe by some combination of stitching along the edge of the welt and sole itself, and a high strength adhesive like contact cement or hide glue.

The main benefit of these types of shoe is that they can be resoled repeatedly, giving them a longer lifespan.

“Goodyear welted shoes offer a near perfect balance of weather resistance, durability, breathability and comfort,” says Loake. “And of course, when it’s time to repair or resole them, they can easily be dismantled and rebuilt.”

While Britain may be famous for this innovation, Loake points out that there are many other constructions, all with different benefits.

“For example, moccasins can be very light and flexible but are not so durable or as well-suited to bad weather. Cemented-soled shoes can look very sleek, but will not feel so sturdy when walking on rough ground, will be less water-resistant and harder to repair.

“Blake-stitched shoes have the soles stitched directly to the insoles. This means that, as the shoes are flexed, they can start to leak through the stitch holes. In our opinion, welted shoes provide a kind of ‘best of all worlds’ solution.”

10 British Shoemakers You Should Know

      Grenson

With a history spanning back to 1866, Northamptonshire-based Grenson has kept the lion’s share of its production on British shores for more than 150 years.

Best known for its classic brogue designs, worn by everyone from Cary Grant to Fred Astaire, the heritage firm was also the first producer in the world to use the Goodyear welting construction method.

Today, Grenson continues to turn out high-quality men’s shoes, as well as a line of minimalist sneakers, handmade from the finest Italian leathers, suedes and nubucks.

Manufacturing: All Grenson shoes are Goodyear welted. From start to finish, they take around three weeks.

Repair Service: The cost of a full refurbishment is £110 in the UK. All repairs take roughly 10-12 weeks from receipt and can be carried out a maximum of three times.

Worth A Look: Triple welt textured brogues such as the ‘Archie’ style.

      Church’s

Continuing the British tradition of innovation, in 1881 Mr Thomas Church (whose own shoemaking heritage dates back to the 1600s) was the first to produce differently shaped left and right shoes.

More than a century on, Church’s continues to be the trademark of a well-shod man, entering the hall of fame of brands preferred by James Bond alongside fellow shoemaker Crockett & Jones, shirtmaker Turnbull & Asser and watch giant Omega.

Whether it’s the firm’s supple leather Oxford or Mod-ish Chelsea boots, Church’s remains one of the most stylish ways to punctuate any outfit.

Manufacturing: Church’s produces 300,000 shoes a year from its Northampton factory, employing nearly 800 people.

Repair Service: Shoes are pulled over the original last, repaired, re-polished and returned in a new box with new shoe bags. The service takes up to six to eight weeks and costs around £130 per pair.

Worth A Look: Classic black city shoes and the ‘Shanghai’ – a reissue of a 1929 brogue-monk-strap-hybrid found in the Church’s archive.

      George Cleverley

Pushing back against the culture of low-quality, mass-produced footwear, George Cleverley still makes most of its shoes by hand inside its workshop on London’s Royal Arcade.

The storied British brand is one of the highest benchmarks in bespoke shoemaking, having kitted out Sir Winston Churchill with a pair of sharp shoes that, at his request, didn’t need to be tied each time he put them on.

Alongside the average ten pairs of shoes the brand makes for its select clientele each week, George Cleverley also produces a no-less-handsome range of ready-to-wear styles, which includes immeasurably stylish monk straps, built using the finest leathers.

Manufacturing: Made to order George Cleverley shoes take up to half a year to create. The brand boasts a client list include David Beckham, Ralph Lauren and Tim Cook.

Repair Service: Some of the oldest shoes to be returned to George Cleverley for repair dated back to 1968. With the uppers restored and bottom resoled, they looked box fresh once again. Price on request.

Worth A Look: The ‘Caine’ Cap-Toe Monk Straps, which feature a sleek marbled appearance

      Loake

Despite a history that’s as old as the hills (1880 to be precise), Loake continues to be run by the same founding family.

Current managing director Andrew Loake’s great-grandfather, John, opened the firm’s first factory with his brothers, Thomas and William, nearly 140 years ago, starting a business that would go on to supply everyone from British soldiers and officers in two World Wars to British Olympians and high-profile actors and musicians.

The premium grade Goodyear welted shoes continue to be made in Kettering, Northamptonshire, involving some 130 craftspeople, up to 75 shoe parts and 200 different operations.

Manufacturing: Each pair of Loake shoes takes around eight weeks to make, with estimates the company has made over 50m pairs of Goodyear welted styles since its founding.

Repair Service: Loake charges £80 per pair, which covers resoling on the original last with new soles and heels and re-finishing the upper part of the shoes within 21 working days.

Worth A Look: The suede ‘Kempton’ chukka boots, with a studded rubber sole produced by fellow British brand Danite.

      Barker

Barker has been making shoes in the Northamptonshire village of Earls Barton since 1880 when a skilled craftsman named Arthur Barker invented waterproof peg-sole boots.

So sought after was this innovative design that Barker was soon unable to satisfy demand and employed other craftsmen in surrounding villages to fulfil his growing order book.

While the company’s practices have remained the same, its designs have moved on significantly, with the brand producing modern ‘creative’ collections that sees classic silhouettes given a contemporary twist.

Manufacturing: One of the finest footwear factories in Europe, Barker occupies a 4.5 acre landscaped site at the centre of the village of Earls Barton, producing 200,000 pairs of hand lasted sewn shoes a year.

Repair Service: Repair costs for cemented shoes start from £95 and £99 for stitched welted shoes and generally takes six weeks to complete.

Worth A Look: Classic finely stitched black ‘Arnold’ Oxford lace-ups.

      Cheaney

One of the pre-eminent names of the Northampton footwear industry, Cheaney has excelled in traditional, bench-made shoes and boots.

Based in the same Victorian red brick factory for 130-years, it isn’t just Cheaney’s premises that is built for longevity, with its footwear using the Goodyear Welted construction.

Refusing to rest on its laurels, in 1966 the British footwear brand earned the Queen’s Award to Industry for its excellence in exporting, before being snapped up by Jonathan and William Church, from the Prada-owned Church’s shoe family, bolstering its reputation.

Manufacturing: Cheaney received a patent in 1901 for its unique welting technique that offers a much more watertight shoe than a traditional blake stitched model.

Repair Service: The same skill and care of Cheaney craftsmen and women go into repairing and rebuilding the brand’s shoes as when they were first built. The cost of a Refurbishment is £110 and takes six weeks to complete.

Worth A Look: The Goodyear-welted ‘Godfrey’ Chelsea boots.

      Crockett & Jones

Crockett & Jones’s number one principle has always been quality. Well, it has to be when wearers such as British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton and more than a million WWII soldiers rely on your footwear to keep the elements out.

Since 1879, the firm has dedicated an eight-week gestation period to every pair of shoes it creates, resulting in the business receiving a Royal Warrant from The Prince of Wales in April 2017.

Though many of its production processes have evolved since the early days of shoemaking, the brand remains committed to traditional craftsmanship, quality and service, evident in everything from robust cap toe Oxfords to elegant velvet slippers.

Manufacturing: At record levels during the 1930s, Crockett & Jones was producing 13,000 pairs of shoes per week.

Repair Service: Crockett & Jones shoes can be repaired in-store and via stockists as well as being sent to its factory in Northampton, priced from £110.

      Tricker’s

One of the oldest shoemakers in England, Northampton-based Tricker’s remains a family-run business, with five generations of the Barltrop family heading up operations since 1829.

Reassuringly sturdy, each pair of the label’s winter-ready boots and summery suede Derbies are handmade by skilled craftsmen and women using a rigorous 260-step construction process.

In addition to upholding a commitment to its heritage, Tricker’s has also moved with the times, collaborating with contemporary names such as Danish brand Norse Projects and streetwear retailer End in recent years.

Manufacturing: Tricker’s makes around 1,400 pairs of shoes a week, which over a year is more than enough for everyone in Greenland.

Repair Service: The Tricker’s repair department claims to be able to bring any pair back to life within three weeks but operates on a price-on-request basis.

Worth A Look: A huge 93 per cent of the shoes Tricker’s produces are brogues.

      Edward Green

A boy wonder of the boot world, Edward Green learned the craft of making shoes at age 12 before opening his own workshop in Northampton in 1890.

The way the company makes its shoes has remained largely unchanged since its founding. And for good reason: the finest materials paired with skills honed over 130 years add up to some of the best footwear on the market.

Today Edward Green is one of the few British shoemakers of which it can be said its suede models, ranging from sharp Derbies to tasselled loafers, are more handsome than its leather options.

Manufacturing: Edward Green shoes are available in strictly limited quantities: the company produces no more than 350 pairs a week.

Repair Service: Each pair of Edward Green shoes is finished by hand with the brand’s signature antiqued patina, which can be reapplied as part of a full restoration costing £250.

      John Lobb

When it comes to top-shelf British shoes, few names are as recognisable as John Lobb. However, the brand is one with an international history. After gaining acclaim in Sydney, Australia, for his boots, Cornish-native Lobb returned to British shores to set up shop in London in 1863.

In the five successive generations of the Lobb family that have followed, the brand has established stores in Paris, Europe, the Middle East, North America and Asia, all the while retaining a distinctly British feel.

Persistent in its goal of setting a high-watermark for home-grown shoemaking, today John Lobb strives for models that will last a lifetime, whether it be leather penny loafers or modern suede sneakers.

Manufacturing: Pulling on the added expertise of its owners, Hermès, John Lobb now turns out 1,000 pairs of shoes per week using the finest leathers.

Repair Service: John Lobb applies the same skill and attention into repairs as the original manufacture. Most models can be re-heeled for £35 while a full restoration costs from £245.

      Shoe Care Tips

      • Always use a shoehorn when putting on your shoes. This will keep the backs strong and sturdy.
      • Look to wear your shoes in dry conditions on the first few occasions – the fine grit picked up by dry leather soles assists water resistance.
      • Where possible, give your shoes at least 24 hours between wears.
      • Try to avoid excessive wetting. Should this occur, always let the shoes dry away from sources of direct heat.
      • Invest in quality shoe trees (cedar wood versions come highly recommended) and use when storing your shoes to ensure that there is no loss of shape.
      • Before polishing your shoes always wipe them over with a dry cloth to get rid of any surface dirt.
      • Your shoes will benefit from a regular application of quality wax polish. This helps to moisturise the leather, keeping it supple and helping to prevent cracks.

Sarah Hyland’s Sourse Chocolates Are Officially My Fave New Supplement

As POPSUGAR editors, we independently select and write about stuff we love and think you’ll like too. If you buy a product we have recommended, we may receive affiliate commission, which in turn supports our work.

Taking supplements in pill form isn’t an easy task — after all, swallowing a big, bland-tasting capsule whole is not exactly an enjoyable experience. So, when I heard about new dark-chocolate-infused supplements called Sourse, I thought they might make taking my supplements a bit more tolerable.

I learned that Sourse is a wellness brand cofounded by actress Sarah Hyland. She joined the team as a cofounder and creative director in 2021 with hopes to “develop life-changing products that benefit everyone who tries them.” She said in a press release, “I have poured my heart and soul into creating this sweet treat with wellness in mind.”

Currently, there are five products you can pick from: Beauty Bites, which contain biotin for “stronger, longer hair and nails”; Energy Bites, which contain caffeine and L-theanine for “calm energy”; Glow Bites, which contain plant-based collagen for “hydrated smooth skin”; Hype Bites, which contain vitamin B12 for “energy, clarity, and focus”; and Mood Bites, which contain saffron and vitamin D for a “balanced mood.” All of the bites are vegan and gluten free and contain a dark-chocolate center blended with key ingredients.

Each ingredient has its own benefits (more on that below), and the dark-chocolate component also serves a function. Dark chocolate is derived from cocoa-tree seeds, which, according to family-medicine doctor Carrie Lam, MD, are one of the best sources of flavonoids and antioxidants. Dr. Lam tells POPSUGAR that flavonoids “aid in protecting your skin from UVB damage.” Dana Ellis Hunnes, PhD, MPH, RD, senior dietitian at RR-UCLA Medical Center, says that flavonoids in dark chocolate can help “arteries produce nitric oxide, which can help open up arteries and lower blood pressure.”

Dr. Lam says “dark chocolate should be consumed in moderation,” and the recommended serving for each bag of Sourse supplements is two pieces.

Considering all the benefits and product options, I of course said yes when the Sourse team asked me if I’d like to try the entire line of bites. Read on to learn what I thought of each product and how the supplements made me feel — both right away and after a couple of weeks.

Leni, meanwhile, looked striking in a pair of black corset pants with lace-up detailing that went from her ankles to her torso. She paired them with a simple black crop top and matching boot heels, and accessorized with a boxy black bag. She wore her hair in loose waves and opted for a natural makeup look.

Heidi shared various photos of the outing in an Instagram post, as well as a video of her posing with her daughter on her Story.

This is not the first time Heidi has taken Leni as her date to a Hollywood event. Last July, the two coordinated glamorous shimmering looks at the LuisaViaRoma for UNICEF event at La Certosa di San Giacomo in Capri, Italy. To the fete, Leni wore a strapless gold dress, while Heidi wore a one-shoulder silver gown with a thigh-high slit.

Heidi recently praised her daughter for landing a major modeling job as the latest face of Michael Kors. The 18-year-old starred in a campaign video for the brand, which debuted a collection of activewear with sports apparel company Ellesse.

Heidi shared a clip of the campaign on her Instagram, writing in the caption, “Best choice in model @michaelkors 😛🤍🧡💙 @leniklum.”

Scarlett Johansson Just Revealed the $11 Beauty Secret in Her Skincare Routine

Scarlett Johansson‘s biggest beauty secret will change your makeup for the better. Plus, guess what? It’s only $11.

The Black Widow star recently shared a glimpse inside her everyday beauty routine during an exclusive interview for Who What Wear. When the busy actress has to get ready in a pinch, the “quick, out-the-door” staple always stashed in her purse is a drugstore mascara. That mascara in question is Max Factor’s Masterpiece Mascara – and the name says it all.

      Masterpiece Waterproof High Definition Mascara

      Max Factor

      $9.99

Makeup artist Pat McGrath (who makes our favorite highlighters for darker skin tones) clued Scarlett in on a shockingly amazing beauty tip: Many beloved luxury mascaras are made in the same facility as Max Factor and use twinning formulas. “If you use any Max Factor mascara, it’s the same as all of those super-expensive ones,” Scarlett told WWW. “So I use Max Factor mascaras now. I was like, ‘What?!'” She also keeps a Givenchy Instant Light Corrective Pen on hand. “It’s great for everywhere and provides a really nice corrective cover,” she said.

Sans makeup, Scarlett follows a pared down skincare regimen of just five simple products, including the latest from her new beauty line The Outset. “Actually, I always found that when I returned to the same basics — just cleansing, priming and moisturizing my skin — it would be its best self,” she told the site.

In both the AM and PM, she starts with The Outset’s micellar antioxidant cleanser, following up with the firming vegan collagen serum and squalane moisturizer (plus an upcoming lip treatment she teased to WWW). “I usually take A+D Ointment and put it all over my cuticles, in and around my nose — I’m so dry — and that’s it! … It’s basically just lathering moisture all over my face.”

Et voila! With her tutorial in tow, shop all the products you need to achieve clear, brightened skin like Scarlett’s:

How to Shop the Gucci and Adidas Collaboration Before It Sells Out

The Gucci x Adidas collaboration was first teased on the Italian house’s Milan runway in February. And it’s finally available today. The mash-up is full of sportswear codes and soccer pitch logos, but it’s far from your typical athleisure. It’s also sure to sell out quickly.

With a 1979 Adidas catalogue as its guide, the full Gucci x Adidas collaboration mixes nostalgic yet athletic silhouettes with some very 2022 flourishes. Sporty matching track jackets and shorts glow up in a luxurious jacquard fabric; sweatshirt dresses have sharp (and already celebrity-approved) shoulders; the classic Adidas Gazelle sneaker comes in never-before-seen Gucci colors. On the formal side, leather bowling bags and suede loafers come down to earth with Adidas’s three-stripe motif or its trefoil stamp.

For now, the entire collaboration is available to shop in select Gucci stores or on Gucci’s website. (Note: You’ll need to create a Gucci account to access the collection.) Limited pieces are also on the Adidas Confirmed app—if you can click fast enough.

There’s another avenue for the most dedicated shoppers to bring Gucci x Adidas into their closets (or gym bags). The pair are opening two temporary California pop-up stores, one in the Los Angeles Melrose shopping center and the other in South Coast Plaza’s Jewel Court. Visit, and you’ll find a storefront coated in a retro print inspired by a joining of Gucci’s monogram with Adidas’s trefoil logo. (Vintage furniture, nodding to the collection’s ’70s influences will serve as fitting decor.) Beyond the West Coast, pop-ups will open within existing Gucci store locations including New York City, Chicago, and Toronto.

If you’re wearing your Gucci and Adidas gear to get active, you may want to accessorize with another of its collaborations: Last week, the house released its take on the Ōura health monitor ring, complete with a gold Gucci monogram. In the case of Gucci x Adidas, the best pieces are a little sporty, a little dressy, and worth the hype.

Gucci x Adidas is available in select Gucci x Adidas pop-up stores and online at gucci.com.
