Linen: A Guide To What It Is & How To Wear It

When it comes to staying cool in summer heat, linen really can’t be topped. So, why has it developed a reputation as being a bit ‘past it’?

Most likely it’s a Victorian hang-up over creases, but as many Mediterranean dandies have proved, linen can make for a raffishly sophisticated look when you know its properties and how to get the best out of them.

What Is Linen?

Linen is a natural fibre made from the stalks of the flax plant Linum usitatissimum. There is evidence to suggest that a linen manufacturing industry was in operation in Egypt over 4,000 years ago. Knowledge of the processes involved in making linen was eventually carried into southern Europe via the Phoenicians, but it was Belfast in Northern Ireland that became the linen hub of the world, producing almost all of the fabric during the Victorian era.

Bed linen was coveted by the upper classes for its cool and soft feeling against the skin, becoming a mark of wealth and social standing. These days, textiles account for the majority of linen grown, with clothing forming only a very small percentage, making a well-sourced and cared for linen shirt an all the more valuable addition to your wardrobe.

Linen Versus Cotton – The Benefits

Coolness

Linen is highly breathable, much more so than cotton due to its comparatively lower thread counts. Take bed sheets, for example. A fine Egyptian cotton bed sheet will start at about a 200 thread count, while a similar quality linen sheet will have a thread count of between 80 and 150.

Absorbency

Linen has a very high moisture absorbency rate, making it the ideal summer fabric for hot and humid climates. It’s also hypoallergenic, which means sweat is less likely to break down its fibres. Combined with its lack of elasticity, this ability to quickly absorb and wick away moisture from the body accounts for the ease with which linen can crease.

Resilience & Longevity

While linen is 30 per cent stronger than cotton, its chief advantage is its longevity. Although a brand new cotton shirt will feel smoother and silkier to the touch, linen only really starts coming into its own after about three to five years of wear.

It tends to become softer and shinier with each wash too, whereas cotton does the opposite. Flax fibres don’t stretch a great deal and are resistant to damage caused by abrasion, which generally speaking is a good thing, although repeated folding and ironing can wear out collars on linen shirts.

How To Wear Linen

While a premium fabric like cashmere has become entirely mainstream (with a huge number of lower quality yarns available on the market), linen remains a polarising material, as evidenced by British actor Bill Nighy in an interview he gave The Telegraph in 2010. “Never trust a man in linen. I can’t relax around a man in a linen suit. Men in unstructured suits are unsettling, and the greatest offenders are those who risk linen.”

Yet swathes of discerning Italian and French men can pull off the slightly crumpled effect with aplomb. So what gives? First and foremost, linen is in a way an affront to our very British taste – our sartorial history simply deplores creases. They are anathema to suited and booted gentlemanly style.

However, you’ll be hard pushed to find 100 per cent linen pieces these days. Brands are well aware of the general aversion to creasing and as such, tend to blend linen with either cotton or silk. The result is a perfect lightweight fabric with great structure, breathability and that distinctly European insouciance.

Linen Suit

To wear linen confidently is to embrace the materials relaxed crumpledness, and the easiest way to do this is with a linen suit. Ideal for a relaxed summer wedding, particularly in a shade of tan, a simple two-piece allows you to beat the heat and still look smart.

Finish with a gingham shirt in crisp cotton to add in both contrasting textures and patterns.

Linen Blazer

To stay breezy but still business-appropriate, go halves on your suit with a neatly cut linen blazer. Trousers are more prone to creasing from sitting down, so keep them freshly pressed in a dark cotton or cotton blend and opt for a lighter jacket up top.

This can also be worn with chinos or jeans for a solid go-to weekend look.

Linen Shirt

A linen shirt is an excellent all-rounder when it comes to summer dressing. Owing to its laid-back appeal, a well-cut version in sky blue can slide under a suit to tone down a more formal look, or sit over a T-shirt and shorts to take a casual combination up a notch.

Linen Trousers

Pure linen trousers can be tricky for no other reason than a man’s crotch has its own atmospheric considerations in hot climes. Given linen’s absorbency, trousers can become misshapen and scruffy looking. Dark suit colours like navy do well to hide this, but if opting for brighter shades, seek out a linen-blend instead, which will keep everything looking smart.

How To Choose Quality Linen Fabrics

Given that new linen is quite stiff to the touch, discerning its quality before buying can be difficult. There aren’t any hard and fast rules to identifying superior linen, so more often than not you simply have to trust the integrity of the brand you’re buying.

As a general rule, you can rest assured that linens woven in Italian mills will be of the highest quality, considering the Italian history and level of expertise in working with fine and delicate yarns.

One aesthetic consideration is ‘slubbing’. Slubs are tiny knots in the threads, and while they are not viewed as a defect, the best linens will be completely free of them.

Where To Buy Linen Clothing

Perhaps more than any other fabric, you truly get what you pay for with linen and linen-blends. The best harvests and the most expert milling practices will be reflected in the price, so try not to skimp.

Stick to labels that pride themselves on the provenance of their fabrics. Any of the Savile Row names are an excellent starting point (for instance, Richard James has a fantastic collection of linen-blend blazers) but even the Row’s head tailors will concede that their Italian cousins have the edge when it comes to working with the fabric. Therefore, it would be wise to explore the likes of Loro Piana, Boglioli, Canali, Berluti, Brioni and Brunello Cucinelli.

Given linen’s longevity and tendency to get better with age, it’s a wise move to invest in quality linen, rather than penny-pinch. That said, there are many mid-priced brands producing affordable options that offer a good balance between quality and value. Suitsupply and J.Crew are two excellent examples – both source fabrics from renowned mills within Italy’s renowned Biella region (see below).

How To Care For Linen

Since linen has no lint and doesn’t pill like wool, it’s very simple to care for. Steer clear of dry cleaning unless a blazer is obviously tarnished – it’s simply not necessary for a fabric that is so comfortable taking on moisture, plus the harsh chemicals involved in dry cleaning won’t do it any favours.

A lukewarm hand or machine wash is the best way to clean linen. Once done, simply hang dry. A quick iron when damp is perfectly acceptable if the garment is excessively creased, but with modern linen blends this will rarely be the case.

Avoid over-ironing the crease of the collar as this can damage the fibres – with a linen shirt you want a nice roll rather than a sharp fold, anyway.

Why Is Linen So Costly?

Much like cashmere, the price of linen is elevated due to the laborious processes involved in making it. Add to that the fact that weather conditions can also affect the quality of harvests, and you have another factor which can bump this fabric’s price up further.

The best and longest fibres tend to be from flax that is hand-harvested, after which the seeds are removed. Bacteria are then introduced to the stalks to decompose the pectin that clumps up the fibres. This process, called ‘retting’, can take quite some time if done organically.

Then comes the ‘scutching’ process, which usually occurs between August and December. One scutching method involves two metal rollers crushing the stalks, thereby removing the unwanted woody parts. The remaining fibres are then ‘heckled’, which has nothing to do with shouting at bad comedians, but rather involves the combing away of short fibres, leaving only the longest and softest fibres for production.

The long fibres are slightly twisted and then processed using a wet spinning technique to achieve a smoother and softer yarn. Some manufacturers have cottonised production, using machinery to speed up the process, but this is known to yield a lower quality fibre.

Is There A Benchmark?

Linen yarns are measured in ‘lea’, which is the number of yards in a pound of linen divided by 300; so one lea will give 300 yards per pound.

Measuring lea is useful when determining linen quality (much like the thread count in cotton or wool), but you will rarely see a textile’s lea stated on the label of a shirt, jacket or pair of trousers. To gauge quality, you’re best carrying out a simple touch test. As a marker, a fine linen handkerchief is between 40 and 50 lea. If it feels rough and stiff, it’s likely to have come from shorter flax fibres.

Provenance is also a good indicator of quality. The best linen-growing climates are considered to be Normandy in France and Flanders in Belgium, but again it’s unlikely for this information to be plainly stated on a label. However, the very best linen weaving mills are almost exclusively in the Biella region of northern Italy.

Kendall Jenner Ushers in Summer With a Sexy String Bikini Pic

Memorial Day weekend signaled the start of summer in the U.S., and Kendall Jenner was prompt to kick off swimsuit season on Instagram with a new shot of her posing in a tiny blue bikini. She kept her caption simple, writing, “:)” Her sister Khloé Kardashian was one of the post’s 3.9 million fans. Kardashian commented, “The most gorgeous.”

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Jenner last made headlines for her ensembles and date at her sister Kourtney Kardashian’s big Italian wedding to Travis Barker earlier this month. Jenner brought her boyfriend of over a year Devin Booker with her. They held hands and had their most serious public outing yet, attending the destination wedding of an immediate family member. The event comes shortly before Booker and Jenner will celebrate their two-year anniversary in June.

A source told E! in March that Jenner and Booker aren’t on the fast track to marriage, though. “Kendall and Devin’s relationship is going strong, but they are in no rush to settle down and tie the knot,” the source explained. “Kendall is not a conventional or traditional type of girl and doesn’t even care about having a huge elaborate wedding. She is very much content with how things are with Devin right now.”

The source added that when Jenner and Booker are in the same place, they spend a lot of time together. “Devin likes to do little things for Kendall to make sure she is appreciated and loved and it warms her heart,” the source said. “They have a sweet relationship, and the family loves seeing them together and seeing her happy.”

Football Casuals: How To Wear Terrace Fashion

Ordinarily, getting kitted out head to toe in your most expensive clothing might be something you’d reserve for a date, a wedding or a black-tie event. However, if you were a devotee of terrace fashion, a matchday trip to the pub would be the only excuse you’d need to get yourself suited and booted.

Of course, by “suit” we mean a grand’s worth of designer Italian outerwear and by “boots” we’re referring to hen’s-teeth-rare Adidas trainers. Because the terrace lads’ definition of finery is a far cry from your standard Savile Row tailoring.

Followers of this subcultural movement refer to themselves as “casuals”. To the layman, they’re football fans who choose to clad themselves in designer “casual” clothing rather than their team’s colours. In the early days of the late 1970s, this was done in order to more easily infiltrate rival firms for fights – something that has seen the term become synonymous with hooliganism and thuggery.

But not all casuals are or were hellbent on weekend, lager-fuelled barbarity. For many, their love for the scene revolves around the fashion and music. Scratch below the surface and you’ll find there’s more to terrace fashion than just flying fists and Stone Island logos. In fact, the scene has influenced modern menswear in ways you probably weren’t even aware of.

The Rise Of The Casuals

1980s Terrace Fashion

Terrace fashion has its roots in the late 1970s. The success of English football clubs saw young fans travelling overseas to Europe for matches and developing a taste for new and exotic sportswear in the process. They brought it back home, others saw and wanted it, and so the cycle began. This was really the beginning of hype sportswear.

The subculture developed its own uniform and a selection of core brands. “Farah, Lois, Diadora, Nike, Adidas, Puma, Sergio Tacchini, Fila, Ellesse, Cerutti 1881, Australian, Lacoste, Lyle and Scott, Pringle, Kappa,” says Neil Primett, owner of 80s Casual Classics, a dedicated casual shop that has supplied wardrobe to films such as The FirmThis Is England and The Business. “These are the labels that made up the outfit of your typical 1979-to-1985 casual.

“Exactly where it started is more difficult to say. I could not pin this on any one place.”

Many credit Manchester as the birthplace of terrace fashion, others namecheck Liverpool. Wherever it began, one thing was for certain: this new way of dressing was offering young, working-class men a space where they could engage with fashion.

“Then we got into one-upmanship,” says Primett. “It was all about who had the best and the latest gear. You might have started out wanting the best Patrick football boots to be like the best footballer. Next thing you know you were after the latest must-have Patrick cagoule. And so it continued.”

Young Football Fans 1980s

The Evolution Of Terrace Fashion

The one-upmanship meant that terrace fashion evolved quickly, especially during the 80s. “The style changed rapidly and dramatically,” recalls Gary Aspden, a footwear designer and brand consultant for Adidas, and cult figure in terrace fashion. “It went from skin-tight jeans to flares to a tapered fit to a 501 fit to a loose, baggy fit – all in the space of a decade. It would literally change overnight. It was street fashion in the truest sense. You had to be part of it to keep up with it.”

The Firm 2009

During the 90s, cornerstone brands such as Sergio Tacchini and Fila gave way to the likes of Stone Island and CP Company. High-end names, such as Prada, Burberry, Aquascutum and Gucci also began to creep into the stands as casuals continued in their bid to outdo each other.

However, the constant peacocking wasn’t to last. The advent of new technology and online auctions saw previously rare items becoming more easily obtainable and the casual look plateaued. “The playing field is so different to how it was when I was a teenager,” says Aspden. “And that’s down to the internet.

“Nowadays casual style has a much more set look and whilst it still exists there isn’t the same urgency in the style one-upmanship that used to go on. The only two brands I can think of that had the longevity to maintain their relevance right the way through were Adidas and Lacoste.”

Terrace Fashion In Modern Menswear

Today, terrace fashion has swaggered out of the stands and into the mainstream. Brands that once had heavy links to football violence have shaken off those negative connotations and become more accessible. It’s the result of the casual look moving beyond its sports-tribe roots and becoming a lifestyle for style-conscious men.

It’s something that Aspden recognises from his work on Adidas’ Spezial line – a collection of clothing that has been bringing casual style to a wider audience. “With Spezial we acknowledged that there is a hardcore Adidas-dedicated audience here in the UK and across Northern Europe that has its roots in casual style and bears little relation the sneakerhead-hype-basketball-inspired sportswear culture that permeates the US.”

Music has also had a huge part to play in opening the casual uniform up to a wider audience. The advent of acid house in the late 1980s and early 1990s brought sportier styles and big logos into the spotlight, while artists such as Liam Gallagher, the Stone Roses and Kasabian have all played a part in keeping the style alive today.

Terrace Trainer Culture

The word “sneakerhead” probably isn’t something you’d tend to associate with the rain-battered terraces of English football clubs, but trainer culture is rife in this country thanks to the casuals. However, while traditional sneaker enthusiasts fawn over all things Nike and New Balance, for the terrace fashion set there’s only one brand worth striving for.

“Adidas has always made the best football products and for me that is at the root of it,” says Aspden. “Where I grew up, when the whole terrace thing kicked off in the late 1970s, it was young kids that adopted the brand’s football shoes as a fashion staple.”

Most of Aspden’s generation were introduced to Adidas footwear through football shoes like the Kick, the Mamba, the Bamba and the Samba. As the 1980s rolled on, all manner of Adidas styles became popular – not just football-inspired models. “We were wearing everything from tennis, running, training, indoor and even the leisure shoes that Adidas made at that time,” Aspden remembers. “There was also a huge subculture of kids travelling over to Switzerland, Austria and Germany to get hold of Adidas trainers that weren’t available in the UK.”

Adidas Samba

After spotting the demand, savvy retailers such as Liverpool’s Wade Smith and Manchester’s Oasis (not the band) circumvented the company and began importing Adidas shoes themselves. This opened things up to a wider audience and made copping rare trainers more manageable for UK enthusiasts, further cementing the brand with the three stripes as the go-to for casual footwear.

“I think most terrace lads like the simplicity of that Adidas aesthetic from the 70s and 80s,” Aspden adds. “Adidas footwear is synonymous with casual style in the same way that Doc Martens are synonymous with skinheads.”

It’s a trend as evergreen as Converse All-Stars, but even so, the modern obsession with retro sneakers has brought 80s and 90s styles back into fashion.

Key Pieces

The typical terracewear aficionado’s wardrobe will be packed to bursting point with expensive coats, technical jackets and rare trainers. However, the bulk of it can be divided up into seven distinct categories. These are the key styles you need to know about.

Description

Mac

If you’ve ever been unfortunate enough to have seen Green Street, there are likely two things you remember about Charlie Hunnam’s football-firm-boss character. Number one: his shockingly badly acted Cockney accent. And number two: his pristine, Stone Island trench coat.

In the 1980s, casuals made a move toward British luxury brands, the two main ones being Burberry and Aquascutum. These two labels are known for producing some of the finest long-length outerwear and it wasn’t long before beige, knee-length coats were flooding football grounds.

In more recent years, the style has lost ground to more technical styles but still remains a cornerstone of casual culture.

Hooded Jacket

The north-west of England is arguably the spiritual home of terrace fashion. Rainy, outerwear-loving cities like Manchester and Liverpool gave rise to the casuals and as such, the scene’s affinity for anoraks and cagoules is deep rooted.

Terrace fashion is about two key things: who’s go the best clobber, and keeping the elements at bay while watching the match. This set of requirements has seen high-quality, high-end hooded jackets become the defining garment of the scene. Brands like Stone Island and CP Company have become the gold standards, but sailing and outdoor brands such as Henri Lloyd, Fjallraven and Paul & Shark are also popular.

Track Jacket

Before all the Aquascutum trench coats and CP Company goggle jackets, the humble track jacket reigned supreme in the casual’s wardrobe. This sporty, retro piece is still a common sight at matches today, but it was when fans started bringing tracksuits back from trips to Europe in the late 1970s that it really go a foothold in the subculture.

Italian brands like Sergio Tacchini, Ellesse and Fila soon came to define the look. The fact that these names weren’t available in the UK at the time only made them all the more appealing to young football fans keen to outdo one another in the fashion stakes.

Jeans

While corduroy trousers and even flares have enjoyed waves of popularity in terrace fashion, it’s straight-leg denim that has prevailed. Ever since the early days in Liverpool, jeans have ruled the roost and as the casual look continues to evolve, so does its followers’ taste in denim.

Traditionally, mid-wash and stonewash fabric from Emporio Armani was probably the most widely worn – almost an afterthought to an expensive jacket and nice pair of trainers. However, today’s terrace-fashion aficionados are more clued up on their weights and wefts, often opting for heavy, raw denim from dedicated brands like Edwin and Nudie.

Scarf

A multipurpose accessory, useful for both keeping the chill off on wintery terraces and obscuring faces before and after a post-match scuffle, the scarf is deeply entrenched into the casual way of life.

Often worn to cover the nose and mouth, checks and tartans are what it’s all about. British brands, such as Burberry, Aquascutum and Barbour are all popular choices and are still a common sight at football grounds today.

Cap

For those casuals intent on fighting, baseball caps have always provided another handy means of keeping their faces hidden from CCTV cameras and police patrols. This practical use has seen the cap permeate terrace fashion making it the headwear of choice for for both violent and peaceful terrace lads alike.

Again, Burberry is a favourite brand, due to its luxury price tag and distinctive all-over check branding. Meanwhile, Polo Ralph Lauren and Lacoste are solid options at the lower end of the price spectrum.

Trainers

Terrace fashion is probably at least fifty per cent about the trainers. Having the most sought-after kicks is a huge part of causal culture and although the Reebok Classic is a staple option, it’s Adidas that rules the roost as far as footwear is concerned.

Classics like the Gazelle and the Samba have remained popular over the years. But during the early years, young fans were often travelling back and forth to Germany to pick up rare models that couldn’t be found in the UK.

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson Debut Blonde Hair With a Sexy Kiss On Instagram

New couple Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson are twinning, debuting their new matching blonde hair together on Kardashian’s Instagram Stories on Sunday. The comedian was seen earlier this past weekend wearing a dye cap over his bleaching hair. This look was hotly anticipated.

The results are even cuter than expected, especially because the lovebirds posed in a few short clips together before sharing a kiss in front of the camera. In one video, they’re using the filter that creates “devil horns” on a person’s forehead, and Kardashian puckers up towards her boyfriend. They also seem to be matching in black.

In the other clip, in black and white, they stick their tongues out at the camera.

They apparently did a photoshoot together featuring the platinum hair—Kardashian originally dyed hers for the Met Gala, because she was wearing the famous “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress that belonged to actress Marilyn Monroe. People were surprised that Kardashian decided to dye her hair for one night, but it’s clear she had other plans for the look.

Davidson recently left his job at Saturday Night Live, and appears to be spending a lot of time in California now that he’s not so tied to the East Coast. Things also seem to have calmed down between Kardashian and her ex-husband, Kanye West, who are still co-parenting their four children.

Kardashian has been focusing on her family and recently traveled to Portofino, Italy, for her sister Kourtney Kardashian’s wedding to Travis Barker. She brought her daughter North West with her to the big weekend of festivities, but Davidson did not make it to the country. That was the same weekend he bid adieu to SNL.

How To Wear A Roll Neck In 6 Stylish Ways

Before the Milk Tray man, before the decade that fashion forgot and then remembered (that’s the 1970s, in case you were wondering) and before Steve Jobs, the humble roll neck was already at work, establishing itself as a cosy but cool way of styling out the cold.

A modern wardrobe staple with all the comfort of a crew neck sweatshirt, but with the added benefit of being considerably smarter, it’s fully earned its spot in the menswear hall of fame. “The roll neck jumper is a timeless classic thanks to its versatility and the fact that it’s extremely comfortable,” says male model and photographer Chris John Millington.

It’s become a staple of the front row set at Fashion Week in recent years, but it’s also retained a rugged masculine appeal (Daniel Craig’s Bond is a fan, for example). “They offer that Steve McQueen ‘man’s man’ feel that’s always appealing, but also provide the modern, refined look that men want right now,” adds Alex Field, head of menswear design at Reiss.

History Of The Roll Neck

The exact origins of the roll neck are as murky as the name itself (on the other side of the pond it’s more readily referred to as a ‘turtleneck’, while ‘polo neck’ is another frequently used term).

Whatever your preferred moniker, the consensus is that it came into being during the 15th century, meaning this natty piece of knitwear has been around in one form or another for at least 500 years.

Like much of menswear’s clothing canon, the roll neck was born out of utility, initially worn by menial workers, sailors and naval officers before being adopted by everyone from poets and professors to playboys and prepsters.

Despite the wide-ranging appeal of the northward-creeping neckline, it only earned its place as a bona fide wardrobe staple as recently as 50 years ago. It was 1968, a time when the roll neck had all the sartorial star power of a pair of Crocs. Enter Steve McQueen as a straight-talking police detective in Bullitt and, suddenly, every man was clamouring to add one to their collection.

Types Of Roll Neck

Perhaps even more confusing than the vagaries in name are the different types of roll neck available. Alongside classic styles, it’s quite common to see a roll neck that, well, doesn’t ‘roll’ at all, or iterations that are barely more than crew neck sweatshirt. Consider this your pullover primer.

Classic

The type of roll neck that has found favour with generations of stylish men is, not surprisingly, the most classic. Featuring an extended neckline that folds back on itself, the result is often the most formal, lending itself well to being worn with tailoring or under a winter coat.

Funnel Neck

A simpler variant of the classic roll neck, the funnel neck style is cut with a slightly shorter extended neckline, removing the need to fold back on itself. To give structure, most funnel neck designs are ribbed, but they can also borrow from athletic apparel by incorporating a zip.

Mock Neck

A hybrid of the funnel neck and crew neck sweatshirt, a mock neck knit locks in warmth with a slightly extended neckline. Best worn casually in a mid-weight, it’s the perfect way to add extra insulation to a winter look.

Know Your Gauges

Before fully warming to this refined, draft-excluding design it’s important to get a handle on the different types of gauges available (that’s the number of stitches per inch of fabric), which will impact not only its insulating abilities but also what it can be worn with.

Fine

Lightweight and form-fitting, a fine-gauge roll neck is the ideal piece to slip beneath a whole wardrobe’s worth of cold-weather staples. Smart enough to substitute for a formal shirt, particularly in temperature-regulating and breathable merino wool, it also looks just as good worn under a leather jacket for a faultless up-down combo. The not so wonderful news is that there’s nothing like second-skin fabric for highlighting a gym-dodger, so it’s wise to bulk up your fabric if you’re carrying a few extra pounds.

Fine Gauge Knitted Roll Neck Jumper for Men

Mid-Weight

A far friendlier option for the exercise-intolerant, a mid-weight roll neck can add inches of warmth while disguising a more portly physique.

Versatile enough to work with both smart and casual looks (and, ergo, smart-casual ones, too) the added heft not only dials up the thermostat but also gives some gravitas to lighter colours such as cream.

Mid-Weight Ribbed Roll Neck Jumper for Men

Heavy

Once a staple prized by men’s men like Ernest Shackleton and Hemingway, today a chunky fisherman-style roll neck retains its appeal for keeping its wearer toasty in the worst possible weather.

The undisputed king of insulation, a thick wool knit in a waffle or cable knit design is perfect for a frigid commute or when pounding the parks and pavements at the weekend, especially when slipped under an overcoat.

6 Ways To Wear A Roll Neck

Menswear’s ebb and flow may not be as mercurial as womenswear’s sometimes tidal seasonal shifts, but we get our fair share of difficult trends (kilts, anyone?).

For a long time, roll necks fell unfairly under this category, but you only need to look as far as the five examples below to dispel the misconception that they’re impossibly difficult to style.

Back To The 1970s

The seventies are going strong in menswear, and few pieces are as synonymous with the decade of Concorde, glam rock and Kevin Keegan’s hair as the roll neck.

To nail the look, opt for a mid-weight knit and experiment with tucking it into a pair of trousers before capping off with a shearling jacket for bonus points. Leave the flares at the back of your dad’s wardrobe.

Sometimes style and practicality are so hopelessly off-kilter that finding something that a) looks half-decent and b) is genuinely easy to wear, is just asking too much. However, when worn under an overcoat, a roll neck is an excellent way to brave low temperatures in high style.

For a smart outfit, anchor your top half with a pair of wool trousers and leather boots, or skew casual with chinos and sneakers for solid off-duty attire.

With A Suit

Whether it’s for a casual Friday getup that looks good outside the office or as a way to tackle party season without having to truss up in a tux, a light-gauge roll neck is the perfect partner for a suit.

Neutral colours that contrast with the tailoring are a failsafe bet, so build a rotation of blacks, blues and earthy shades before attempting something more daring, such as jewel tones.

Layer Player

The roll neck’s greatest asset is its versatility, allowing certain styles to work just as well as part of a more dressed-down rig. But rather than with joggers and work boots in homage to ‘Hotline Bling’, get creative with your layering instead.

A fine-gauge example can look surprisingly handsome under an Oxford shirt, while mid-gauge styles offer all the warmth of weightier versions when slotted under a gilet or overshirt.

With Streetwear

As with corduroy, dad jeans and chunky trainers, the once-stuffy roll neck has been embraced by young streetwear-leaning scenesters. Worn looser or with unexpected items (under a work shirt, say, or with some baggy cropped trousers), the trick here is remembering what would have been uncool five years ago and doing exactly that with a smile on your face.

A$AP Rocky Talks About Being a New Father With Girlfriend Rihanna and Their Future Plans

Rapper A$AP Rocky is a new father, welcoming his baby boy on May 13 with his girlfriend, beauty mogul and musical artist Rihanna. Rocky was interviewed for the cover of Dazed‘s summer 2022 edition and he shared a bit about his expectations of himself as a parent.

After being asked what kind of dad he wants to be, the musician said, “I will always remind my children to never lose their imagination, even as adults, no matter what. I actually love to watch cartoons – I’ve watched like, Teletubbies, Blue’s Clues, Yo Gabba Gabba, Peppa Pig and Baby Shark.”

He continued, “I hope to raise open-minded children. Not people who discriminate. And I’m not trying to describe a saint, but realistically, I just want a cool child with cool parents.”

Other cute details from A$AP’s interview include the fact that he calls Rihanna “my lady,” and that folks who attended the couple’s baby shower received t-shirts to take home that read, “I went to Rih & Rocky’s Rave Shower and all I got was this amazing shirt.”

He believes his connection to Rihanna and the birth of their child was cosmically aligned. Rocky felt especially moved by whatever grander forces brought them together when he joined her in Barbados to meet her family and relatives of his late father, who was also from the island.

“It was one of the most surreal experiences I’ve ever encountered in my lifetime,” he said.

They’re also quite in sync when it comes to fashion; Rihanna’s maternity style was noted everywhere, as she looked amazing wherever she went through every trimester. According to Rocky, they don’t have to work too hard to look good together.

“I think it’s just natural. We happen to look good together naturally,” he explained. “You know, it would take a lot of work to have us forcefully match before we leave the house. Sometimes we match to a T, or we just wear the same clothes. If I buy a shirt that she likes, I expect to get it stolen… but then I gotta steal it back.”

Austin Butler and Kaia Gerber’s Red Carpet Kiss + More Viral Cannes Moments

Including the return of the side part.

Cannes brings together everything we love in one magical place: film, fashion, beauty and meme-worthy moments (will anything ever beat Timothee Chalamet resting his head on Tilda Swinton’s shoulder?). The festival may have fallen a little short on the latter but it was a glamorous event nonetheless. And after all, isn’t everything just more beautiful against the backdrop of the French Riveria?

If you missed any of the action, we’ve compiled the best moments from the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

Only Cannes can give you Anne Hathaway 2.0

Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway posing closely together. Jeremy wears a brown suit and fedora and Anne is in a blue Gucci dress

Cannes has a new princess. Who would have thought the media-shy actor would be the most talked about celebrity of the festival? When she wasn’t turning heads on and off the red carpet in her many outfits, Hathaway’s chemistry with her Armageddon Time co-star, Succession’s Jeremy Strong, stole away social media’s attention (the film also got a seven-minute standing ovation!). Only Paolo (the infamous hairstylist from The Princess Diaries) can give you a princess, but only Cannes can give you the new Anne Hathaway.

Bella Hadid serves old-school glamour

You can’t really turn back time, but Bella Hadid found a way…with the help of Law Roach. The stylist pulled several vintage dresses from the archives of Versace and Chanel for the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. First was a black gown designed by Gianni Versace for his Spring 1987 collection. Then a plunging gown created by Donatella Versace for the house’s Fall 2001 collection. Next was a black-and-white poofy Chanel number circa 1986 and a sleek white Gucci dress by Tom Ford from 1996. To top it all off, the supermodel was pictured posing on a terrace for boyfriend Marc Kalman in a blush chiffon dress from Versace’s Fall 2003 collection, proving she can indeed pull off fashion from any decade.

Adriana Lima takes a cue from Rihanna

Call it the Rihanna effect: at Cannes, Adriana Lima’s baby bump was the main event. For her first appearance on the red carpet, the supermodel wore a cutout black Balmain gown that perfectly accentuated her belly. But she didn’t stop there. Lima followed it up with a revealing Robert Cavelli gown and a bejewelled cutout yellow dress. Given the festival’s strict (and arguably archiac) dress code, her outfits made a powerful statement.

Austin Butler and Kaia Gerber are in love

kaia gerber and austin butler kiss with their hands on each other's cheeks on the cannes film festival 2022 red carpet premiere for "elvis"

Austin Butler may have had one of the buzziest premieres at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, but it was one sweet moment on the red carpet that caught social media’s attention. At the premiere for his film Elvis, Butler and his girlfriend, model Kaia Gerber (daughter of Cindy Crawford), stole a glance and a kiss. To paraphrase Elvis himself, it must be “burning love.”

Deepika Padukone does it all

Photography courtesy of Getty Images

Was Deepika Padukone the busiest woman at Cannes? The Indian actor and jury member was at just about every major red carpet, and she slayed them all. With her stylist Shaleena Nathani, Padukone came to the French Riviera with an arsenal of stunning outfits (like her all-black feathery Louis Vuitton gown and ruched dress by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, paired with a pearl collar). Even with her packed schedule, Padukone raised the bar with every red carpet appearance.

Side parts, edgy liner and more experimental beauty

Millennials, rejoice! The side-part made a comeback at Cannes. Camille Razat, Bella Hadid and Winnie Harlow all walked the red carpet with their hair to one side. But these aren’t the bangs of your youth. Take Devon Ross, who gave the trend a punk spin with beads and a burgundy stained lip courtesy of hairstylist Peter Lux and makeup artist Emma Day for Pat McGrath Labs. Other notable looks: Iris Law’s slit eyebrows, under eye liner (see: Indya Moorse and Andie McDowell) and natural textures (à la Ophély Mézino).

The Best Smartwatches To Buy In 2022

The future of watches or a gimmick? Stylish, or not so? Smartwatches have been the biggest disruptor in the timepiece business ever since the first Apple watch was released in 2015. But, of course, watchmakers have been trying to pack more functionality into their products for decades, long before the advent of the smartphone.

Hamilton launched the first LED digital watch in 1972; Timex and Casio’s first calculator watches came out a few years later; in 1982 Seiko created a watch with an in-built TV, and two years later its first wrist-worn computer terminal; there was a pager watch in the 1990s; and Microsoft actually launched a ‘smartwatch’ – that’s what it called them – back in 2003.

Watches have always been getting more intelligent. But it was Apple’s – and more specifically the ability to link it to a smartphone – that was the game changer. Just how far that game has changed, or will, remains to be seen.

What Makes A Watch A Smartwatch?

First the mobile phone became, in effect, a computer in our pocket. Now the smartwatch looks – with further miniaturisation – to become a computer on our wrist, or at least an extension of one. For the time being, any advanced functionality is dependent on its connection to a nearby smartphone.

Montblanc Summit 2Montblanc Summit 2

Whether you need a smartwatch is another matter – they work well as fitness watches and perhaps for those who travel a lot. But beyond that it’s really for those, in a sense, too lazy to get their phone out of their pocket – a means of getting a quick glimpse or access to many of the apps the wearer uses.

At least, that’s how the Swiss watch industry tends to see them – more as novelty than real competition. After all, a mechanical watch is a very different thing – an expression of craft and materials that, arguably, evokes something emotional rather than practical.

That said, the famed makers of said watches are eyeing the boom in smartwatches somewhat nervously. This is because some studies have suggested that people raised on cellular tech not only have diminishing interest in wearing a watch full stop, but if they can be convinced to wear one, they expect it to do more than just tell the time.

Apple WatchApple Watch

“I think the fact is that all of us will be wearing some kind of smart device in the next five to 10 years,” as watch designer Max Busser of MB&F has it, “because connectivity will just be that important. The possibilities for how these devices will be used are just so varied.”

Some kind of smartwatch – analogue, touchscreen, some kind of hybrid – is likely to be the mainstream future of wristwear, with mechanical watches surviving but becoming an ever more esoteric, specialist interest. Or, at least, that’s what this app says. But then it does need upgrading.

The Best Smartwatches On The Market

Apple Watch Series 4

It wasn’t the first, but thanks to the brand’s cultish following, Apple’s smartwatch certainly fired up interest in a product sometimes dismissed as more gimmick than benefit. As with any next-gen tech, it’s meant to be the same as before, but better, and the Series 4 is that: a larger screen, bigger buttons, improved sensors and better performance, including a ceramic and crystal case back, which improves cellular signal and makes performing calls with the watch now a real proposition.

If that is, talking into your wrist doesn’t still strike you as odd. But then, like Bluetooth ear-pieces gave us people talking to themselves, it’s only a matter of time before tech re-moulds our behaviour and the strange becomes mainstream.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

As the Apple Watch is for fans of Apple, so the Galaxy watch is for fans of Samsung – as with so much tech, the ecosystem of your smartwatch often matters. Unlike the sci-fi style of the Apple Watch, however, the Galaxy hides its functionality under the proverbial bushel – with that stainless steel case and diving watch-style bezel, it looks much more conventional than it is.

The bezel, in fact, is how you navigate the Galaxy’s applications, arguably a more satisfying method than big fingers on a tiny touchscreen. It’s good for fitness too – including swimming. This is a smartwatch that’s even water-resistant down to 50m.

Montblanc Summit 2

You can’t fault the exterior of this watch – DLC (or ‘diamond-like coated’) steel or grade 2 titanium are options – but then, to the tech-literate, the interior is impressive too: the Summit 2 has a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 chip. One benefit of being the first smartwatch to have this is that it gives the wearer (a claimed) battery life of up to a week between charges on ‘time-only’ mode.

Yes, if you have to occasionally wind that mechanical watch, of course you more than occasionally have to plug in the smart variety. With Google’s Wear OS, Montblanc has clearly gone to the experts for the techy stuff and focused on the hardware itself – but in a clever way too. Those traditional pushers launch apps of your choosing.

Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45

Tag Heuer was one of the first big names in luxury watchmaking to embrace the idea of the smartwatch, rather than to see it as the enemy. “We can’t ignore the trend,” as the brand’s then CEO Jean-Claude Biver put it when the Connected series was launched. “As a luxury brand with an ‘affordable’ entry price we could not miss the connected watch. We must adapt to tastes of a younger generation.”

Often reviewed as the best, if most expensive, Android smartwatch on the market – it’s the first smartwatch to achieve ‘Swiss made’ certification too – the Connected has a modular design, meaning there are some 4000 options of case and lug material, bezel colour, strap type and so on to make the watch more your own.

Frederique Constant Horological Smartwatch

Although the gulf between smartwatches and what the Swiss watch industry might call a ‘proper’ watch is closing, there’s still a sense that these are two distinct worlds. Frederique Constant is one of the first high-end makers to produce models that are very much classic timepieces on the outside, but – thanks to a partnership with Alpina and a Silicon Valley tech company – on the inside capable of two-way communication with a smartphone.

All info regarding alerts, sleep monitoring, activity tracking and the like is displayed using traditional analogue hands – which saves the aesthetic albeit, arguably, at the cost of utility. “There [have been] technical challenges, explains Frederique Constant’s head of watchmaking Pim Koeslag.

“Normally, for example, connected devices are essentially plastic to assist the transmission of radio waves, and stainless steel is not so good for that. So we had to rethink the dial to allow transmission through the glass – you can’t just start using materials not associated with high-end watchmaking. The results might encourage a re-think of the watch market and what a ‘smart’ watch is.”

Fossil Collider Hybrid Smartwatch

If the watch world once made distinctions between serious watches and fashion ones, the advent of the smartwatch has opened up a new market for makers of the latter. Since the tech in a smartwatch is quickly outmoded, few people want to spend too much on one in the first place. Nor are ‘fashion’ watches beholden to the same standards of make as the ‘serious’ ones.

Enter the likes of Fossil, with a hybrid model – one which, typically lacking a touch screen, makes it more affordable or power-hungry too. The Collider looks as though it was designed at a swanky studio in Scandinavia, but its hands whizz and its vibration whirs to tell you to check your phone for various alerts.

Huawei Watch 2 Sport

For every smartwatch trying to look like an upscale mechanical one, there’s a model happy to embrace the inherent shelf-life in tech with a more bare bones aesthetic. And so the Huawei Watch 2 may be a little plasticky (for all that it has a scratch-proof ceramic bezel) and a little bit bulky.

And yet it has 4GB of storage for music, GPS, wifi, bluetooth, 4G connectivity and – as many smartwatches at least aim at offering – a suite of toys to help your fitness regime, including a real-time heart-rate monitor, dedicated health app, coaching facility and workout stats. It won’t actually get you exercising – maybe a small electric shock every minute until you start moving would work – but it’s a good companion when you do.

Pete Davidson Debuts New Look That Matches Girlfriend Kim Kardashian

On May 27, Pete Davidson was spotted in public for the first time since he formally exited his job at Saturday Night Live last weekend. The comedian did not put in an appearance at the wedding of Kourtney Kardashian, even though he and her sister Kim Kardashian are still going strong. The wedding was in Italy and Davidson did not make it to the festivities.

He and Kim are together again in Calabasas and now they’re matching. New photos show Davidson wearing a shower cap over his freshly dyed locks and a casual white sweatshirt. Kim also recently bleached her hair for the Met Gala, honoring Marilyn Monroe’s platinum locks as she wore the actress’s famous gown. It was the same one Monroe wore to serenade President John F. Kennedy in 1962.

The beauty mogul was by her boyfriend’s side as he made his transformation, wearing a nude SKIMS crop top and matching leggings, and a pair of wraparound rose gold sunglasses. E! News reports that they were likely at a photoshoot, because Kim’s hairstylist Chris Appleton and her makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic were both at the scene.

It’s not the first time either one of them have dyed their hair platinum blonde, but it is the first time they’ve done it together as a couple. Kim’s hair looked particularly stunning with her recycled Dolce & Gabbana gown, who were basically the designers for Kourtney’s entire wedding party.

Kim wore one of her own older gowns with a lace overlay, paired with some stunning accessories. She had her hair swept into an updo, with long soft pieces falling around her face.

She shared some adorable behind the scenes photos from the event on Instagram, showing off her daughter North West’s Dolce & Gabbana, too. Like her mother, North dressed all in black with a beautiful choker necklace featuring a cross and carried a gorgeous clutch.

Tattoos are one of the ultimate forms of self-expression. Okay…they’re not for everyone, but if you are into your body and looking to get creative, the sky’s the limit.

Whether you’re getting inked with a small tattoo, a 3D tattoo, a beloved quote, a sweet sleeve, an out-there pattern—or anything in between—looking after your brand new body art is essential. And to do just that, you need to invest in a quality tattoo lotion.

Tattoo lotion will help to hydrate the skin and protect your body art in those delicate early phases—the right product will also make the ink site feel fresh throughout the day.

What we like

  • It’s superior skin protecting capabilities
What we don’t like

  • If you’re not into self-tanning, there’s not much point in buying this lotion

Branded as an aftercare lubricant, this cheeky little pot of goodness from Redemption looks and feels like a petroleum barrier ointment—but, it’s petroleum-free (bonus). Made with mainly natural products, this tattoo lotion is an excellent option if you’re looking for a robust protective layer post-inking (or for the times when you feel your tat needs a little extra TLC).

Active Ingredient: Organic castor oil | Skin Type: All | Size: 1 fl. Oz | SPF: None | Cruelty-Free: Yes

What we like

  • The lotion’s robust, viscous barrier protection
  • The neat little pocket-sized pot it comes in
What we don’t like

  • Thick barrier creams or lotions can be a little bit much for some

Last but certainly not least in our best lotion for new tattoo list is this welcome addition from CalfLove. What we like

  • This lotion’s ability to aid skin at every stage of the tattoo journey

What we don’t like

  • If you have very vivid colored tattoos, something a little more specialist might be better

What to look for in a tattoo lotion

You know which tattoo lotions are the best of the best. Now, to help you cement your decision, we’re going to tell you what to look for in the right tattoo lotion by considering the Three S’s.

SPF

Containing an SPF—or sun protection factor—is by no means a deal-breaker (many lotions don’t contain an SPF). But, if you’re going away on holiday freshly tattooed, you’re fair-skinned or you live in a hot climate, grabbing a lotion that soothes your tattoo while shielding the area from the sun’s rays is probably a good idea.

Skin type

When it comes to being kind to the skin, not all tattoo lotions are made equal. That means that while some lotions are kind to very sensitive skin, some can act as an irritant and could harm your tattoo. That said, you should always check what kind of skin type a lotion caters for before hitting the buy button.

Size

Depending on your budget and how long you plan to use your lotion (a few weeks versus ongoing), you should look at the flow-ounce quantity of a lotion before committing. If you’re looking to use a lotion long term, getting something in larger quantities is advisable. But, if you travel a lot, smaller tubes or tubs will be far more convenient.

Bonus tip: Always check a lotion’s active ingredients and what they do for your skin. This will ensure you get the right product for your skin type, tattoo style, and personal goals, preferences, or needs.

FAQ

    • Many professional tattoo artists recommend applying tattoo lotion to your body art before you go to bed or when you wake up, preferably after you’ve washed or showered. However many advise to wait 24hrs before moisturizing.

The reason for this is because your skin gets dehydrated overnight which can make your tattoo dry and sore. Apply your tattoo lotion before and after sleep and you will keep you body art in tip-top condition at all times.

      • As a general rule of thumb, applying tattoo lotion to your body art twice a day will provide the best results.

Applying tattoo lotion in the morning and evening will keep it hydrated and healthy without experiencing any unwanted oily buildup.

        • If your tattoo is brand new (more or less fresh out of the studio), you should avoid using scented tattoo lotions.

After around three days, you can safely use a scented lotion as long as it’s largely made with natural substances and has a healthy active ingredient. Always read the instructions or labels before applying any tattoo lotions.

Kim Kardashian Breaks Down Her Recycled Dolce & Gabbana Look For Kourtney’s Wedding

For Kourtney Kardashian’s wedding in Portofino, Italy, last weekend, it seemed like everyone was wearing Dolce & Gabbana. Some of these outfits were new, but because it’s a wedding, it makes sense that some were old (though none were blue). Also wearing Dolce & Gabbana, Kim Kardashian was stunning in black, with her platinum locks swept into a loose updo.

This weekend, Kim revealed that her gown was one she has been seen in before, a black maxi dress with a fishtail cut. She originally purchased it in 2011, and wrote in her Instagram Stories, “Fun fact about this look for the wedding! I know you guys just saw me in my archive on last week’s episode of The Kardashians! I have every piece photographed and on an app. So when I knew I was going to Italy (LOVE a theme for a trip) I pulled all my Dolce & Gabbana clothes to try on again and see if I could re-wear anything!”

She then shared a photo of herself in the dress on the red carpet for the Glamour Awards, saying she purchased it at Bergdorf Goodman.

Kim then wrote that she dressed the outfit up with another layer of lace, writing, “But to make the dress more modern and more me, I wore this lace gloved Vetements dress I had in my closet for a layered lace look.”

The 41-year-old beauty mogul also added detail to her new look with some amazing accessories, including a choker of green stones in a gold setting. She took a number of photos with her daughter, North West, who was also wearing an outfit from the Italian fashion house. North had a long black jacket with a white pattern inside the cuffs, and she wore big chunky boots and carried a black clutch with a heart-shaped clasp. Perfect Italian glamour.

Where Was Season 4 of Stranger Things Filmed?

After almost three years, Stranger Things is back this summer with season 4 and it has been way too long for fans. The excitement for the new season has only grown with the delay, but there were a lot of issues around filming. The main one was the pandemic, which caused filming to halt and then begin again in October of 2020. Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson, told Us Weekly in December 2020 that it definitely changed the way things worked on set.

“It’s definitely an unorthodox form of shooting,” said Matarazzo. “Everyone on set has been very diligent about wearing their PPE. Even for our off-camera work, we keep our masks and goggles on. Lots of distancing. Separation during lunch, and transport from base to set.”

So where was this “unorthodox” filming happening? Warning: minor spoilers ahead.

To start, there were quite a few locations that were needed for the show because some of the biggest characters, Eleven and Byers, have moved across the country to California when the season opens. Dustin, Lucas, and Max are still in Hawkins, Indiana, and Hopper is not disintegrated— but he is trapped deep in Russian territory.

Scenes set in “Hawkins” are generally shot in Atlanta, Georgia, but Decider reports that the scenes in California were actually filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Eleven and Will are attending a fictional school called Californian Lenora Hills High School, and those scenes were filmed at Albuquerque’s Eldorado High School. Other scenes happened at Albuquerque’s Roller King skating rink and in Los Lunas, New Mexico.

All the shots in Russia were done in Vilnius, Lithuania. The scenes where Hopper is seen in a jail cell are remarkably authentic in that they were filmed in Lukiškes Prison, which is centuries old. It is no longer in operation, except for TV and movie making. Pretty much the perfect place for Stranger Things.

Is This Viral Plant-Packed Smoothie a Gut-Health Hack or Overhyped?

A rainbow of colours and textures in this vibrant and healthy snack board of fruit, vegetables, dips, nuts and olives. Citrus fruits, grapes, tropical fruits and berries add color to the spread. Hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts, kalamata olives and home made dips of hummus, beetroot and pumpkin are surrounded by salad sliced for a fun, healthy way to snack. Raw healthy food, ready for a party.

Smoothie recipes go viral all the time on social media. But one in particular caught our attention: a 30-plant veggie “slurry” on TikTok from neurologist Chris Lowery, Ph.D, said to boost your gut microbiome. At the beginning of the month, he creates a veggie “slurry” with 30 different plants including arugula, kale, leek, turmeric root, parsley, and beets (just to name a few). He adds a small amount of each vegetable to a blender with six cups of water, blends it together and stores the juice in the fridge (it keeps for about a month without spoiling since it’s all veggies and no fruit). Every day, he adds four tablespoons of the slurry into a quart of water and drinks it for a supposed microbiome boost.

Not yet sold on the idea? Well, researchers at the American Gut Project found that people who ate more than 30 different plant foods each week had a more diverse gut microbiome compared with those who ate 10 or fewer. The research also showed that people who hit the 30 mark had more bacteria in their gut that produce something called short chain fatty acids, which have been shown to reduce the risk of bowel cancer. But does a diversity of plant foods actually lead to a healthier gut? POPSUGAR spoke to integrative gastroenterologist and certified lifestyle medicine physician, Christina Tennyson, MD, to find out.

Will Eating 30 Different Plant Foods a Week Improve Your Gut Health?

Yes. It’s important to remember that fiber is present only in plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds, and serves as food for our gut bacteria, Dr. Tennyson told POPSUGAR. If we don’t feed our gut bacteria, they won’t thrive or be able to do their beneficial job of making vitamins, training our immune system, making helpful substances like short chain fatty acids, and communicating with our brain. There is no fiber in animal products like meat, fish, eggs, and dairy, so it’s really important for people to get enough from plant foods. Also, be mindful that consuming excessive amounts of sugary foods and alcohol can lead to an imbalance in the gut microbiome. Eating a variety of plant foods throughout the week, up to 30 if you can, helps to increase the diversity of the bacterium in the gut microbiome, preventing the imbalance that can lead to health issues like stomach upset and difficulty digesting. Diversity has been associated with improved health outcomes including decreased chronic disease and less inflammation, explained Dr. Tennyson.

How Can I Eat 30 Different Plant Foods a Week?

Taking time at the beginning of the week to plan out your meals and go grocery shopping will help ensure that you get a variety of plant based foods. If you rarely eat plant foods, or are a picky eater, small changes can make a big difference, said Dr. Tennyson. For example, if you choose one plant food for each of your three meals plus one snack (four times a day), and you do that every day of the week, that’s already 28 different plant foods. You can also get creative and combine plant foods: carrot cake oatmeal made with shredded carrots, banana, and oats, and topped with blueberries, for example, includes four different plant foods in one meal.

Sample Plan to Get 30 Plant Foods a Week

Drinking Dr. Lowery’s viral veggie juice isn’t the only way to meet your plant count. If you aim to eat four to five different plant foods a day each week, you’ll be able to reach your goal. The meal plan below incorporates 30 different plant foods.

Day of the Week

Breakfast Lunch Dinner Snack Total Number of Plant Foods (different from the previous days)
Sunday Bagel with egg and cheese Kale salad with roasted butternut squash Burrito with kidney beans and rice Carrots and hummus 6
Monday Oatmeal with raspberries BLT Chicken with broccoli Apple and peanut butter 7
Tuesday Eggs and toast Pasta salad made with red onion and olives Pizza with green peppers Yogurt with blueberries 4
Wednesday Smoothie made with spinach and blueberries Arugula salad with strawberries Pasta with tomato sauce Snickerdoodle cookie 4
Thursday Egg and avocado toast Kale salad with chickpeas, peppers, and pumpkin seeds Chicken with red potatoes Carrots and hummus 5
Friday Yogurt and blueberries Quinoa salad made with black beans and mango Pepperoni pizza Apple with peanut butter 3
Saturday Pancakes with berries Sandwich with sliced turkey and avocado Spaghetti and meatballs in tomato sauce Orange 1

Take a look at what you eat throughout the week, and see if you’re already hitting this target, or if you could add some plant foods here and there to increase the variety. If you’re not eating many plant foods at all, Dr. Tennyson says to gradually increase the amount over several weeks to a month (one new plant food every three to five days), as consuming a ton of fiber when you’re not used to it can cause digestive upset.

Kim Kardashian Shares Some Shots From Behind the Scenes at Kourtney’s Wedding

Last weekend was Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker’s big Italian wedding in the seaside town of Portofino. There were a lot of photos of the family all dressed up for many of the events surrounding the main ceremony, but on Friday, Kim Kardashian dropped some adorable behind-the-scenes shots of the day.

The carousel of photos show Kim, of course, looking stunning in her black lace Dolce & Gabbana gown. Kim was wearing ornate accessories made of green stones and gold settings in a choker around her neck, emphasizing her décolletage visible beneath the sheer lace.

In another image she posed with her daughter North West, who was dressed in black to match her mother. The 8-year-old wore a pair of large combat boots with a long black and white printed robe. North also had some Dolce & Gabbana on her for the wedding, carrying an adorable black clutch with a gold heart clasp. Around her neck was a choker as well, hung with a small cross.

Kim got a picture of herself with North and sister Khloé Kardashian doing some finishing touches in the mirror, then one just with Khloé, who was wearing an elaborate golden crown.

But one of the sweetest moments she shared was between North and her aunt Kourtney as the bride was being led out with her long white train. In the photo, Kourtney squeezes North’s cheeks while giving her a loving smile. On the other side, she holds her son Reign Disick’s hand.

Kim also shared a photo of her sister walking with Barker and a picture from behind the couple of the pair at the altar taking their vows. From that angle, the image of the Virgin Mary woven into Kourtney’s veil is clearly visible, and her short Dolce & Gabbana dress peaks through the pattern.

“KRAVIS FOREVER,” Kim captioned the post. Her Instagram Stories included a few bonus images of North and herself with their friends Domenico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana, and Gui Siqueira on the same day.

What’s An Anxiety Cave? A Therapist Explains

Shot of a young woman looking pensively out a window at home

Picture this: you’re about to head out to a dinner date with your significant other, and they text you about a change in plans. Their parents came for a surprise visit, and you’re going to meet them for the first time. You freeze up. The thought of them staring at you, grilling you question after question, and feeling put on the spot — it’s all just too much. You retreat to your bed and tell your significant other that you’re suddenly not feeling well and can’t go. This is an example of retreating into what’s called an anxiety cave.

If you’re not familiar with the term, an anxiety cave is a phrase used to describe retreat and isolation from social connections, work, and the world when you’re experiencing heightened anxiety, explains therapist and licensed ACA counselor Anna Papaioannou, who specializes in anxiety. It is a “period of disappearing or falling off the face of the earth from interacting with others and retreating to the false safety of isolation,” explains Papaioannou. This is a common occurrence for many who experience anxiety, as you may become easily overwhelmed by external stimuli, or fear the unknown or uncontrollable, explains Papaioannou. The location of your anxiety cave could be anywhere you feel safe. This may be your own home or somewhere familiar to you. An anxiety cave often takes place in a space where you spend the majority of your time. If you think you’ve been stuck in an anxiety cave before, here’s what you need to know about the mental health phenomenon and how to get out.

What Triggers an Anxiety Cave?

Obviously anxiety — but specifically a heightened sense of anxiety. Typically someone will experience intense physical or mental symptoms of anxiety before retreating into an anxiety cave. Some people may experience only physical symptoms and no mental symptoms, or visa versa. Some people may experience many symptoms, and some may experience only one symptom. “All are valid and real,” Papaioannou says.

Physical symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Increased heart rate and respiration and/or chest tightness
  • Hot or cold flushes or sweating
  • Trembling or shaking, or a tingling sensation
  • Dizziness, weakness, or fatigue
  • Stomach distress such as constipation, diarrhea, stomach cramps, or nausea; needing to go to the toilet more or less often
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia or sleep disturbances
  • Muscle tension and/or pain
  • Feeling restless or unable to sit still; leg shaking or toe tapping
  • Teeth grinding
  • Changes in appetite
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Panic attacks
  • Biting inside of mouth, lips, or nails

Mental symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Feeling tense, nervous, or unable to relax
  • Having a sense of dread; worrying that you’re losing touch with reality
  • Fearing the worst case scenario; worrying a lot about things that might happen in the future
  • Feeling like the world is speeding up or slowing down
  • Heightened self-consciousness; feeling like others notice you’re anxious and are looking at or judging you
  • Feeling like you can’t stop worrying or that bad things will happen if you stop worrying
  • Worrying about anxiety itself, for example worrying a panic attack might happen
  • Seeking reassurance from others or worrying others might be angry or upset with you
  • Low mood and depression
  • Rumination: thinking a lot about bad experiences or thinking over a situation again and again
  • Depersonalization: a type of dissociation where you detach from your mind or body, or like you’re a character in a film
  • Derealization: another type of dissociation where you feel disconnected from the world around you, or like the world isn’t real

Is an Anxiety Cave the Same as Cave Syndrome?

Cave syndrome is slightly different than an anxiety cave. The term cave syndrome was coined in 2021 by psychiatrist Arthur Bergman due to the COVID pandemic. It describes the feeling of fear or reluctance to return to public life after isolation and sheltering in place. The pandemic created a lot of anxiety due to the risk of illness and death. And even though vaccinations are available and proven to help, and mask mandates are lifting in many places, certain people may still have a hard time releasing that worry. The term anxiety cave used by Papioannou describes the feeling of not wanting to leave your house or safe space because you’re feeling anxious about something, COVID related or not. She began using the term over 13 years ago to describe her own experience with anxiety and depression. She also said that many of her clients refer to themselves “coming out of a cave” after dealing with an episode of heightened anxiety. Both an anxiety cave and cave syndrome are connected to a fear of returning to public life, and both can keep a person isolated.

How Long Does an Anxiety Cave Last?

When someone is experiencing anxiety, they can get caught in thought spirals and what-if scenarios that can overwhelm the nervous system and cause a freeze or shutdown response, making it difficult to leave their anxiety cave. Depending on access to internal resources like therapy or a support network, and emotional regulation tools (think: deep breathing, butterfly tapping, or ice cubes to cope with strong emotions), someone’s stay in an anxiety cave could last a few hours, several days, weeks, or even months. If the individual doesn’t have the support network they need, or they feel they’re incapable of handling the challenges that await them, Papaioannou says it can be much more difficult to emerge from their anxiety cave.

Are There Any Benefits to Anxiety Caves?

Everyone has their own unique set of coping mechanisms and survival resources that they lean on when feeling anxious or unsafe, Papaioannou says. Retreating or isolation can be a valuable resource when you need some space to down regulate your emotions or to process challenges.

However, isolation or avoidance in the long term further exacerbates anxiety and the notion that you cannot handle or face difficult situations, she warns. If you’re feeling stuck and exhausted to the point where you are consistently unable to leave your room or house, or are neglecting basic self-care and hygiene, consider reaching out to a therapist to help you work through it.

How Do You Overcome an Anxiety Cave?

At its core, anxiety is a survival response designed to keep you safe. Your nervous system and brain are constantly listening to and monitoring both your environment and internal world to check for safety, she explains. If it detects any signs of danger or dysfunction, this can trigger the fight or flight response and feelings of anxiety and panic. Try these three somatic techniques to regulate your nervous system, recommends Papaioannou. They can support you feeling grounded and safe in your body during stressful or anxious moments and help you come out of your cave:

  • Tap into and notice your current physical state: Noticing and connecting to sensations is important to build body awareness and bring you back to your present situation rather than the what ifs. Body awareness means being consciously connected as a whole being versus mind and body being separate, explains Papaioannou. Start by sitting in a chair, take a moment and notice your overall experience. Move your feet on the floor, shifting until you feel fully connected to the floor. Now feel your back and bottom on the chair, noticing how the chair supports you. Adjust until you feel your comfort spot. You should start to feel more grounded. Take a few moments to really enjoy the comfort of being supported by the chair and stabilized by the floor. What do you notice now about your overall comfort, physically and emotionally? Increasing your connection to the sensations or experience that your body is having builds a pathway for changes in response to overwhelming feelings.
  • Exercise containment with safe touch: This technique helps you reclaim safety within your body. Take your right hand and place it just below your left armpit, holding the side of your chest. Crossing your arms, place your left hand on your right bicep (or shoulder or elbow). Take several minutes to notice the feeling under your hands. Does your body feel warm? Is the fabric of your shirt smooth or scratchy? Can you feel your heartbeat? Do you experience a sense of containment from your hands and arms? Is it pleasant? As mentioned above, this will bring about body awareness, connect your mind and body, and help overcome overwhelming thoughts and sensations.
  • Make the VOO sound: Think of the sound of a foghorn makes. Take a deep breath, then imitate the foghorn, making a sound that rumbles through your torso. See if you can feel the vibrations of the sound all the way down to your pelvic floor. Note that this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be loud when you make the sound. The key is to make the pitch of the sound as low as you possibly can. As you run out of breath on the Voo, let the next breath come in naturally. The Voo sound activates the vagus nerve through vocal toning, Papaioannou says. It also lengthens your exhale which activates the parasympathetic nervous system. The Voo sound helps you move from focusing on the obsessive thoughts in your mind to the physical sensations of your body. If you make the sound and feel your mind and body calming down, stay with that and enjoy it. Then, feel free to make the sound again. If you feel your mind and body are becoming more triggered, (which the Voo can produce for some people, even if they’ve found the exercise calming before), let go of this exercise for now and use another one listed to settle your system. The Voo sound isn’t recommended more than three times in one sitting, Papaioannou says.

Remember: you can use one or all of these somatic tools to feel more grounded, regulate your nervous system, or reclaim a sense of safety in your body. But anxiety is not something that you have to deal with or manage on your own. Having a support network such as a friend or family member that you can reach out to can help you to feel seen, heard, and supported. Knowing that your feelings are real and valid allows you to feel less isolated in your experiences.

If you notice that quick tips like the ones mentioned above haven’t been working, and that your friend or family member isn’t able to offer you the support you need, consider seeing a professional for help, Papaioannou suggests; especially if your experience of anxiety is interfering with routine activities and causing physical symptoms. A mental health professional can help with streamlining the process of identifying your triggers and maintaining long-term strategies.

The Unexpected Hero of Stranger Things 4? Kate Bush.

Spoilers for Stranger Things 4, vol. 1 below.

A Stranger Things binge is an instant trip back to the ‘80s, thanks to the accurate retro outfits, hair styles, set design, and cultural references. (Will we ever think of The NeverEnding Story the same way again?) But the music, of course, plays a huge part in nailing that effect, from the synthy theme song by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, down to the impeccable Journey soundtrack in the official season 4 trailer.

In Stranger Things 4, music plays an important role in the battle against a new evil from the Upside Down. Named Vecna, this villain preys on people who have suffered some sort of trauma; he infiltrates their minds, haunts and entrances them, then brutally kills them. There seems to be no escape for his targets at first, but our favorite Hawkins teens discover that music therapy can surprisingly help: Playing a song the victim loves can wake them and break them free from Vecna’s trance before he can destroy them.

Their theory proves to be true when Max is targeted by Vecna in episode 4. She’s haunted by her step-brother Billy’s gruesome death and is lured into the villain’s trap with visions of Billy. She’s close to death when her friends, including her ex-boyfriend Lucas, save her by blasting her favorite song through her headphones to wake her up: It’s “Running Up That Hill (Deal with God)” by Kate Bush.

First of all, let’s take a moment to applaud Max’s taste. Second, the song choice isn’t completely random. Three episodes earlier, at the beginning of ST4, Max is listening to it during a slow-motion walk down the school hallway to the guidance counselor’s office. We’re assuming she’s listened to it a bunch before then too; the song, from Bush’s album Hounds of Love, debuted in 1985 and was on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 20 weeks, peaking at number 30. It’s totally possible a teenage girl in 1986, like Max, would’ve heard it on the airwaves and fallen in love with it. Plus, its meaning closely resonates with her life.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

“At the start of this season 4, Max seems to be trying to manage her extremely complex feelings of emotional estrangement from her friends, meshed with the devastating loss of her brother Billy. ‘Running Up That Hill’ is very deeply connected to Max and ultimately serves as her emotional touchstone and source of strength,” Stranger Things’ music supervisor Nora Felder explains to ELLE.com via email. “Her friends also quickly realize that this song could be the key to freeing her from this powerful monster.”

The lyrics in the chorus could also add a painful layer to how Max feels about losing Billy: “And if I only could / I’d make a deal with God / And I’d get him to swap our places.” Bush explained in a 1992 interview with BBC Radio 1 that she wrote the song about men and women in relationships, and how they would better understand each other if they were in each other’s shoes. “And if we could actually swap each other’s roles, if we could actually be in each other’s place for a while, I think we’d both be very surprised! And I think it would be led to a greater understanding,” she’d said. But in Max’s case, the lyrics might also describe her sadness over Billy’s death and possible regret and guilt for not knowing how to save him.

The song elevates the drama of Max’s escape from Vecna too. In the climactic scene, the track’s pounding percussion adds to the adrenaline rush while Bush’s commanding vocals give it emotional weight. The version of the track in the show also includes swelling strings to make the moment feel even bigger. Max sprints through Vecna’s foggy red lair, dodging spikes and falling debris from the sky as she races to the portal her friends have opened for her—all while Bush is singing, “Be running up that road / Running up that hill.” Literally and sonically, the song just fits.

“We were all thrilled that Kate Bush was a fan of the show and allowed the use of the song.”

“A lot of brainstorming went on as this song [selection] really had to be something unique and special serving as such an integral part of the story,” Felder says. “When I was running through varied ideas to present, as is part of the process, I remember getting instantly excited. ‘Running Up That Hill’ popped in my head. It is such an inspiring and soulfully centered song which seemed like something Max could really identify with. The song also has a great musical build which was also a key element Matt and Ross [Duffer, the Stranger Things creators] wanted. I was really quite pleased that it resonated for the Duffer Brothers. We were all thrilled that Kate Bush was a fan of the show and allowed the use of the song.”

So, thank you, Kate Bush, for saving Max.

While “Running Up That Hill” takes center stage this season, Felder was also able to include other ‘80s hits in other moments. “This season of the show starts in the first quarter of 1986 so naturally this was a time frame we did want to bring into focus for the season,” she says.

“Some songs were character-based selections, such as the Kate Bush song for Max. ‘Pass The Dutchie’ by Musical Youth aided in establishing the new teen character, Argyle, who adds a very welcomed humorous and endearing dynamic to our teen gang. It also introduces us to the Pizzamobile that serves as an essential element for the season.

“Songs were also selected to introduce a couple new locations including the Rink-O-Mania Roller Rink. Specifically for this environment an eclectic playlist was needed to establish the varied types of teens that went there. After all, in the ‘80s, who didn’t love to skate? Songs used ranged from ‘Tarzan Boy’ by Baltimora, ‘You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)’ by Dead or Alive, and of course the Surfaris classic ‘Wipe Out’ was featured.”

Felder doesn’t quite have a favorite song pick this season, but she does love the way “Running Up That Hill” evolves through the story. “The way it’s used is similar to how ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’ by The Clash was used for season 1 of the show,” she says, referencing the song Jonathan and Will Byers bonded over and communicated with when Will was missing early in the series.

“Although there is quite an eclectic mix of songs that includes many recognizable songs of the era,” Felder adds, “Stranger Things certainly has a way of connecting each of the songs in a very unique and special way to its audience young and old, and around the world!”

The LIT Method Strength Machine Is Like a Rower and Pilates Reformer in One

If you follow POPSUGAR Fitness on Instagram, you may have come across LIT Method founders and married couple Justin and Taylor Norris hosting high-energy live workouts on the regular. If not, meet their program, LIT Method: a high-intensity, low-impact training style that typically involves a combination of rowing intervals and resistance band exercises.

In May 2020, the two former personal trainers decided to level-up their workouts with the launch of the LIT Strength Machine ($1,749, originally $2,099), a totally unique, multifunctional tool that allows you to do strength, cardio, and physical therapy all on one piece of equipment. How? It’s a water rower that also features a resistance-band training system — think of it like a rower and Pilates reformer hybrid.

When they first had the idea to create their own machine, the Norrises experimented with a variety of different cardio machines, including climbers and assault bikes, but “all these exercises were causing the shoulders to come forward, and our biggest philosophy when we were training as personal trainers was about retracting your shoulders and fixing your posture,” Justin says. Rowing activates all your posterior muslces (the muscles along the back of your body), he explains, which acts as an antidote to all the forward movement our bodies do on the daily (think: walking, sitting, etc.).

Not to mention, so many other low-impact cardio options, such as Spinning, target a limited group of muscles, whereas rowing activates 86 percent of the muscles in your body in one stroke, explains Taylor — and that’s how they landed on a rower. “But we don’t even like to call it a rower, because that serves as one modality, but we do multiple modalities, and all low-impact,” she says.

In case the backstory hasn’t piqued your interest, know that the LIT Strength Machine also counts Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter and five-time MLB All-Star Adrián González as fans and investors. All that said, it’s safe to say the duo have created a workout machine worthy of your attention. Here’s everything you need to know.

LIT Method Strength Machine

How the LIT Method Machine Works

Rowing, strength training, barre, physical therapy, and Pilates are all possible on this multipurpose machine — there’s a reason they market it as “the most versatile machine on the planet.”

When you buy the LIT Strength Machine, you also get resistance bands, handles, ankle cuffs, and a phone and tablet attachment (also called the Starter Package). You can attach the ankle cuffs and resistance bands to eight anchor points around the machine, which allows you to strength train in multiple planes of motion and do more than 500 different exercises. And because you can hook a resistance band onto the bottom of the seat, it allows you to use it like a Pilates reformer carriage, Justin says.

“We want to be affordable and accessible to everybody,” says Taylor. Training on a Pilates reformer comes with incredible benefits, but it’ll run you several thousand dollars to buy your own. “We can do the same movements on our machine, and we can also give you more modalities so [you don’t need to go] buy strength training equipment and then Pilates equipment and then something for cardio. That was the whole idea.”

The Starter Kit is the most basic and affordable option. You can also upgrade to the Strength Kit ($1699, originally $2355) or Performance Kit ($2,099, originally $2460), which come with extra gear like an additional set of resistance bands, a mat to place under the machine, a heart-rate monitor, and a strength bar. “The strength bar is one of my favorite pieces,” Justin says. It looks like a weighted bar, but has clips on either end so you can attach bands, which then hook up to the machine. You can use it to add resistance to moves like squats, presses, bent-over rows, kayaking movements, and more to create a total body workout, he says.

LIT Strength Machine: Easy Storage And Maintenance

Like other water rowers, the LIT Strength Machine uses a tank of water to add resistance while you row. (When you pull the rower handle, you’re working to spin a flywheel with paddles through the water in the tank.) However, other water rowers require you to add or remove water from the tank in order to change the amount of resistance. This machine has a special dual tank system where one tank holds the water and another scoops out the amount of water needed for your selected level of resistance or “LIT level,” which can be easily adjusted using a dial on top of the tank. To care for the tank, you just drop in a chlorine tablet every 12 months (purchase of the machine comes with a lifetime supply). You never have to change the water.

Many cardio machines such as bikes and treadmills can take up a lot of space. The LIT Strength Machine has built-in wheels and vertical storage, so when it’s not in use, it only takes up a two-by-two-foot area of the floor. It also requires no electricity, so it can be used outside (the digital classes can be viewed on a tablet or a phone that you can attach to the machine or play on your TV).

LIT Method Workouts and Streaming

The LIT Method on-demand platform gives users access to a library of 10- to 60-minute workouts. Take a strength-, rowing-, or Pilates-specific class, or opt for one that mixes the various modalities. There are also mat cardio, barre, ab-focused, and recovery classes that you can do without the machine (and because you stream the workouts on your phone or tablet and not the machine itself, you can take those classes anywhere). New live classes are added daily, so the content always feels fresh, and if you need a little more guidance, you can commit to one of the many 3- to 12-week workout programs offered in the app.

When you purchase the LIT Strength Machine, you automatically get a three-month membership to the platform. Otherwise, membership will run you about $25 per month, $72 for three months, or $240 annually.

LIT Strength Machine: What Editors Think

POPSUGAR associate fitness editor Angelica Wilson gave the machine a try with Justin and Taylor coaching her through a brief workout and says, “the LIT Method Strength Machine is so comfortable to use.” She says her hips and lower back usually feel achy after stepping off a traditional rower — something that didn’t happen when she tried out the LIT Strength Machine. Justin and Taylor say they intentionally set the foot placement a bit wider than the typical rower to help ease stress on the knees, low-back, and hip joints. (Having the feet set wider allows for the knees and hips to be in alignment when you’re rowing, making the machine more comfortable to use.)

Genevieve Farrell, POPSUGAR director of fitness and wellness video, also adds: “I’ve tried so many pieces of at-home workout equipment and this is by far the most versatile.” So there you have it.

Jennifer Lopez Leaves the Dance Studio In Sexy Dress With a Deep V Plunge

Jennifer Lopez stepped out of her dance studio in Los Angeles this week wearing a sexy black jumpsuit with a plunging V-neckline. The loose fabric blew around her body in the wind as she stepped into her car. The backless piece showed a glimpse of her white bralette underneath.

She wore a large pair of black wrap-around sunglasses and carried a large black handbag. J.Lo’s hair was blown out straight around her shoulders, and she wore a chunky chain necklace and a pair of green sneakers under the wide bell legs of the jumpsuit.

Lopez’s dance practice will definitely be a part of her upcoming documentary titled Halftime. The doc’s name is a reference to J.Lo being in her early 50s, and to her famous halftime performance with Shakira in 2020. It’s set to premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and will be available on Netflix June 14.

Netflix said in a statement, “In Halftime, Lopez is giving us a peek behind the curtain — unpacking everything from her iconic 2020 Super Bowl halftime performance with Shakira (get it?) to her journey as a mom, Latinx creative, and woman on the other side of 50. This is the Lopez you don’t see in glossy interviews.”

Directed by Amanda Micheli, the doc is supposed to reveal more about Lopez’s life offstage. The actress and pop star has been experiencing a wave of change in the past year or so, breaking off her engagement with Alex Rodriguez and renewing her relationship with Ben Affleck.

Affleck and Lopez are now engaged for the second time. They were initially connected in the early aughts, before going their separate ways. Affleck married actress Jennifer Garner and Lopez eventually married musical artist Marc Anthony. They both have children from their previous relationships, and have recently been shopping for a new place to live that would be suitable for their blended families.

Actor Jameela Jamil Says “My Whole Life Is a Period Shame Story”

SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA - NOVEMBER 15: 2020 E! PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS -- In this image released on November 15, Jameela Jamil arrives at the 2020 E! People's Choice Awards held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California and on broadcast on Sunday, November 15, 2020. (Photo by Rich Polk/E! Entertainment/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images)

Actor Jameela Jamil is known for her honesty and candor, which is why when POPSUGAR spoke to her it came as no surprise that she’d be open to talk about one of the most shamed experiences in America: periods.

In honor of Menstrual Hygiene Day, Jamil is partnering with P&G’s Always to help end period poverty, support Congresswoman Grace Meng’s Menstrual Equity For All Act, and share her own period struggles.

“I feel as though my whole life is a period shame story,” she told POPSUGAR. Jamil says that growing up she received little to no education about having a period. “My school did not talk about periods at all. And when they talked about sex, it was all kind of just condom on a banana.” As a teenager she says she felt “mostly alone” when it came to her menstrual cycle.

“Girls at school didn’t talk about theirs. It all just felt like we were in kind of group denial that this thing was happening to us, it was changing the way that we felt, changing our mood, changing how we felt about ourselves, changing our emotions” says Jamil.

But being properly informed about one’s health is crucial. The lack of education around periods, period symptoms, and reproductive health in general is one reason people with conditions like endometriosis and PCOS may go undiagnosed for so long, for instance.

Access to affordable period products is also a basic human need. “Period poverty,” which occurs when someone is not able to find or buy menstrual health products, can cause people to miss school or work and has even been linked to mental health consequences.

“The Good Place” actor says now more than ever is the time to stand up for menstrual equity, in light of the recent Supreme Court draft opinion leak and the possible impending overturn of Roe v. Wade. “We have managed to utilize shame as a tool to silence people about these issues, which is how legislation has come so far to block the rights of people who need access to abortion, and to not step up and help those who have periods.” (FYI: abortion-restrictive laws have already been passed in states like Oklahoma, Texas, and Arizona.) Some have even expressed that the draft decision contains wording that could open the door for future legislative challenges to access to birth control.

“We are seeing our rights being stripped away from us left, right, and center. And they have made us believe that it’s too late and we are powerless, and we aren’t,” Jamil says. “So we must seize this opportunity right now while we still can to use our voices, use our power, use our group herd strengths, and make them realize that we’re not going away. We’re only going to get louder.” This applies to both abortion rights and menstrual equity, emphasizes Jamil.

Here in the US, nearly one in five girls have missed school because they didn’t have access to period products. The Menstrual Equity For All Act would ensure that free period products are supplied in all schools. You can join Jamil in speaking up by contacting your local representative to express your support of the act today — and voice your support for abortion rights while you’re at it.
