My Neighbor Was the Unabomber. I Never Suspected Until It Was Too Late.

unabomber

For nearly two decades, Ted Kaczynski carried out a deadly bombing campaign against those he believed to be destroying the environment and furthering the advancement of modern technology. The former UC Berkeley math professor was able to carry out his reign of domestic terror from rural Montana in a secluded 10-by-12-foot shack, where he tested homemade bombs and compiled hit lists. In 1996, Kaczynski was captured at the cabin and sentenced to eight consecutive life terms in prison with no possibility of parole.

The “Unabomber,” as Kaczynski is known, was the “perfect, anonymous killer,” according to the FBI. He was so innocuous, so untraceable that even those who lived nearby never suspected him of murder. In her new book, Madman In the Woods,” (April 19, 2022, Diversion Books), Kaczynski’s next door neighbor—and one-time friend—Jamie Gehring opens up for the first time in intimate detail about the “silly” recluse down the road. Below, in her own words, Gehring remembers her relationship with Kaczynski, and the guilt she shouldered after finding out he was the Unabomber.

One of my earliest memories of Ted Kaczynski is a happy one. I was playing outside—I must have been around four years old—when he appeared out of nowhere. He tended to do that. I was so excited to see Ted. Back then, in the early ‘80s, he was just this silly, strange neighbor who lived in an isolated cabin near our home in Lincoln, MT. He’d stop by for dinner with my parents, and then play cards with me. Our family considered him a real friend, and he had become something of a regular fixture in my life.

That day, he knelt down and opened his hands to reveal a painted rock. Ted had brought me a gift! I felt so special, and so appreciative. I loved rocks as a little kid. And this one was just for me.

I don’t remember what was painted on the rock. Neither does my family. But many years later, I discovered a picture taken by the FBI after they raided his cabin. In the image, Ted’s paints are sitting next to the fragments of the metal he put in his deadly bombs.

I know it’s just paints, but that photo is a symbolic juxtaposition of who Ted Kaczynski is to me: He’s Ted, the guy who brightened my day with colorful rocks, but he’s also the Unabomber, a monster who terrorized the nation.

When Ted first moved to Lincoln in 1971, he still had a “disheveled professor” kinda look. But by the time I was born in 1980, he had begun to look more like a wild man. His clothes were torn and falling off of his body. He always had mud under his nails. His hair stuck up straight up, and his eyes were very wide. I remember looking down, and not being able to tell if the dirty things below his ankles were his shoes or his feet. Upon further inspection, they were his feet. His shoes had basically rotted away. He was completely unkempt.

As time went on, Ted’s appearance only got more extreme—and so did his behavior. In the early 90’s, around the time I was 10, Ted started to come over and ask what time it was. I don’t know if it was because of his change in look, his change in cadence, or maybe the fact that I was older and more aware of the world around me, but I became afraid of him. He never seemed right. He was always in a hurry, and frenzied. If he came by the house when I was alone, I would hide in the closet until he left.

Looking back now, I was right to be afraid. At that time, Ted was at the height of his reign of domestic terrorism. He was holed up in his cabin, testing bombs and writing his manifesto. He was killing people, and then knocking on our front door to ask for the time.

Ted’s relationship with my family began to deteriorate, too. My dad owned a sawmill, and Ted was clearly bothered not only by the industry of logging, but also by the noise it created and the outsiders it brought so close to his cabin. I’ve been asked whether I think the noise of our mill fueled Ted’s anger. That’s a difficult question to answer, because, yes, most likely it did—but so many things fueled Ted’s anger. Jets flying overhead. The presence of forest rangers.

The conclusion I have come to is that Ted was inherently angry and very violent. Just because he heard the noise of a sawmill or saw logging happen close to his home, doesn’t mean we should be held responsible for his actions. Ted Kaczynski was responsible for Ted Kaczynski’s agenda—not the people around him who were trying to live their lives and make an honest living.

Another question I get is: “How did you not know?” There is a certain amount of guilt I feel, because for so long my family unknowingly lived near this very dangerous person. But Ted did a great job of blending in. He was methodical in where he purchased his property and how he chose to live. I think that’s partly what enabled him to carry out his agenda for so long.

Looking back now, though, I see the signs. As a kid, I used to hear somebody walking and whistling outside my window at night. Then, I’d hear metal moving around. I would run into my parents room, and tell them someone was out there. My dad would say, “There’s nobody, go back to bed!” It was chalked up to an overactive imagination. But now I know it was Ted. He was scavenging pieces of metal from my dad’s old cars and used equipment out by the sawmill.

I think it’s one of the reasons he was able to remain untraceable for so long. He wasn’t buying metal from a hardware store. He was finding pieces, melting them down, and using them as shrapnel for his bombs. People joke about monsters being under the bed at night, but for me he was outside my window.

During the ‘70s and ‘80s, a couple of mines and properties in Lincoln were vandalized. My father’s sawmill was sabotaged by somebody who poured sand into it. It remained a mystery until 2020, when Netflix released Unabomber: In His Own Words. In the documentary, Ted admits that he tried to shut down my father’s business.

Around that time, our family dog, Wiley, got sick. Wiley was incredibly sweet, always going on hikes with me and playing outside. But there was something about Ted he didn’t like. If Ted was riding his bike by the sawmill or walking up to the house, Wiley’s hackles would raise. He barked and chased him. It was almost like Wiley turned into an entirely different dog when Ted was around.

When Wiley got sick, the vet said he ingested strychnine, which destroyed his immune system. Wiley ended up passing away from health issues related to being poisoned. When authorities searched Ted’s cabin years later, they found a stash of strychnine. Ted also wrote a letter to a local newspaper after his arrest, mentioning that he had poisoned a local dog that came into his garden at times.

These are just a few of the many acts of terror Ted carried out in our own backyard. Of course, they’re nothing compared to what he did on a national level. But for me, it was still heartbreaking.

In 1995, right before Ted’s arrest, my stepmother took my little sister Tessa into the woods with her to do some chores. They were reseeding the ground, when all of a sudden my stepmother got a horrible feeling that something—or someone—was watching her. She grabbed up my sister and got out of there. She could never shake that feeling, or that experience. In the wild of Montana, there’s bears and mountain lions, so it’s not out of character to run into wildlife. But she knew it was more than that.

While working on Madman In the Woods, I poured through thousands and thousands of pages of Ted Kaczynski’s journal entries and musings. He recorded daily occurrences, from his cooking to his hunting. He even had a designated crime journal, where he wrote in code. He recorded his victims as “experiments,” and kept track of the results of his bombings. It was almost like Ted was writing to an audience, the way he recorded everything. I don’t know if it was his way of communicating, or maybe there was a part of him that always knew at some point he would be arrested and all of these things he wrote would be public.

In one of Ted’s journals, I came across a reference to the day my stepmother and sister were in the woods. Ted wrote about how he had a gun pointed at them. He had contemplated killing them, but ultimately decided it was too close to home. He also didn’t want to take just one out and leave the other alive.

When I started Madman In the Woods, I was searching for answers about my neighbor Ted. I was interested in how the different interactions he had in his life made him feel—and how they shaped his actions. But I was also searching for answers about my family. My dad was a very private man, so I didn’t know much about his involvement with the FBI’s investigation until after he had passed away 10 years ago.

I recently sat down with the FBI officer who arrested Ted, who called my father the “eyes and the ears of the investigation.” My dad was like an informant. He let the FBI know if there were footsteps outside of Ted’s cabin, and if there was smoke coming out of his chimney. He updated them on Ted’s whereabouts and behaviors. The FBI even asked my dad to videotape the surrounding property and cabin. He was key to their investigation.

When my father was asked to do all these things, he knew that Ted was a potential serial killer. He also realized there were probably weapons in his cabin. There was some trepidation, of course, but my dad knew there was no other choice. He risked his life to help the investigation, and for that I’ll always be incredibly proud of him.

After the FBI raided Ted’s cabin in 1996, people started showing up to our house and asking to see where the Unabomber lived. My dad turned just about everyone away, unless, of course, they were affected by Ted’s violence. Most were families of his victims, some were people on Ted’s future hit list.

To this day, I’m still trying to make sense of who my neighbor was. Maybe part of the reason we’re not catching serial killers as quickly as we could is because they’re so capable of looking and acting normal. If you’re not touched by true crime or you have not lived it, you expect these people to be very obvious monsters.

That’s just not always the case.

They can still be capable of compassionate, human moments. Like when Ted painted that rock for me. Then I think about his hands. The hands that painted that rock for me are the same hands that crafted killing devices.

Milan Fashion Week’s Best Beauty Looks

Photography by Imaxtree.com

Including brightly coloured eyeliner, naturally textured hair and more headgear.

While over-the-top Italian glamour will always send hearts racing (we’re looking at you, Moschino), natural and carefree beauty continued to be the overwhelming theme at Milan Fashion Week Fall 2022.

Middle parts and natural textures were seen on the runways of classically boho labels such as Etro and Missoni, as well as many others, including Abodi and Sportmax. However, just as we were thinking we could stash our blow dryers come fall, Versace and Dolce & Gabbana paired middle parts with super-sleek and polished strands that nearly have us blowing the dust off our early 2000s-era flat irons.

Don’t even have time for an air dry? Why not simply slick your hair back right out of the shower? Jil Sander and Giorgio Armani showed too-cool-for-school wet looks, while the pared-down bouffants at Prada were slicked back with more sculpted shapes and volume. Just like we saw in London, headgear continues to be a major accessory (and saving grace) for next fall, with a wide variety of hats, caps and snoods seen at Max Mara, Alberta Ferretti, Gucci, DSquared2 and more.

Gorgeous, glowing skin (and not much else) continued to dominate the catwalk (Fendi, Roberto Cavalli and Tod’s), while on the opposite side of the spectrum a more jubilant mood brought bright flashes of colour to the forefront. Eyes continued to be the focus with liner and shadows seen in every shade of the rainbow at Capasa Milano, purple at Blumarine, orange at AC9 and Missoni, pink at Emporio Armani (complete with those club kid crystals), and silver and cobalt at Gucci. But brightly pigmented hairlines and face paint at Diesel and bright blue, black and scarlet pouts at Gucci and Blumarine showed that it’s not just your eyeline that can have all the fun come fall.

How POPSUGAR Editors Cope With Anxiety — and How You Can, Too

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States, and whether you have a clear diagnosis or not, anxiety can impact your daily life. While physical symptoms are all too real — increased heart rate, muscle tension, headaches, appetite changes, gastrointestinal issues, etc. — the internal effects like intrusive thoughts can send people into a spiral. I know because I’ve been there.

Therapist at Conason Psychological Services Fatema Jivanjee-Shakir, LMSW, tells POPSUGAR that it’s “common for people to experience anxiety without meeting diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder,” pointing to a 2014 systematic review that found twice as many people met the criteria for “subthreshold” generalized anxiety disorder than the full syndrome.

“When your anxiety gets in the way of you being able to be present in your life, it’s a sign that it is becoming more severe and in need of professional support,” Jivanjee-Shakir says, adding that you don’t actually have to meet diagnosis criteria to find help. She continues on to note that people often “approach anxiety-provoking situations with avoidance, which further breeds anxiety and fear about the situation.”

Instead, she explains, it’s helpful to develop supportive coping skills for navigating these situations, especially pinpointing when each coping mechanism feels accessible for the type of anxiety experienced. For example, meditation might work when your anxiety is at a three out of 10, she says, but it may not be tangible if your anxiety is at a seven out of 10.

Psychologist Ashu Kapoor, PhD, agrees, telling POPSUGAR that she stresses the importance of healthy coping mechanisms over unhealthy ones. “Not all coping skills will work for all of my clients,” she notes. However, “I say, if it works, use it.”

Ahead, POPSUGAR editors reveal their top tips for coping with anxiety. Try some out for yourself the next time you’re overwhelmed and anxious — you may be surprised at what aids you. And of course, seek professional guidance if need be.

“Get Out of the Bathroom!” and Other Thoughts We Had During the Euphoria Season 2 Finale

Spoilers ahead.

Tonight, we learned why Fezco never made it to Lexi’s play.

At home, he’s ready to leave – he even had Faye iron his dress shirt and he’s got a whole bouquet of roses set – but Custer is here causing a major delay. He tells Fez that the cops found Mouse’s body, but Faye says he’s lying. (Custer told her that Laurie, head drug dealer, was the one that killed Mouse.) As the conversation gets more and more intense, Ashtray gets more and more suspicious. Ultimately, he takes the knife he’s been hiding in his sleeve and stabs Custer right in the neck, killing him. Fez takes Custer’s phone and dumps it in a giant soda.

Insert wholesome break: We get a montage of Fez and Lexi’s phone conversations. They talk about their plans for the future. For him, it’s living on a farm with animals “like some Little House on the Prairie-type shit” (surprisingly, Lexi has never heard of the show) and for her, it’s balancing three kids with her writing career. They talk about the pitfalls of social media, the things they have in common, and why they’re glad they became friends.

Back at Lexi’s play, Cassie, freshly humiliated and dumped by Nate, storms the stage. She mocks her sister for “unpacking all of her trauma” and “judging all of us” in front of the whole school. Rue and Jules are cringing in the audience, and, at this point, so are we. When Cassie won’t stop, her mother Suze even gets on stage to put an end to her antics, unsuccessfully. People start booing Cassie. Even Maddy starts to call out details of Cassie and Nate’s relationship from her seat. Lexi is in tears.

When Cassie’s infamous merry-go-round scene is revisited in the play, Cassie screams and tackles the actress off of her carousel horse. Maddy runs to the stage to beat Cassie up, with Kat and BB on her tail. She chases Cassie into the hallways of the school then grabs her by her straight blonde hair and throws her head against A. BRICK. WALL.

Rue then reveals that a few days ago, she visited Elliot and told him that he might’ve accidentally saved her life. She forgives him. She hasn’t talked to Jules yet though; it’s going to take her some more time. Dominic Fike, the singer-actor playing Elliot, has his musical moment and plays Rue a song he’s working on. As he plucks on his guitar, he sings in the hook, “Think you may be my only friend / I’d give my all to see you shine again / I hope it was worth it in the end.” When Elliot asks if they can still be friends, Rue reminds him that they’re no good for each other.

After Cassie’s disruption, Lexi is in shambles. But thanks to a sweet pep talk from Bobbi and her sparkly green eyeliner, Lexi gets up to face her cast backstage. Following Rue’s lead, the audience starts chanting Lexi’s name and helps her rebuild her confidence. Before resuming the show, Lexi apologizes to the crowd and even quotes something Fez told her about her play: “Sometimes people need to get their feelings hurt.”

Speaking of, back at Fez’s place, he tells Ash that he’s going to take the fall for him and assume the blame for Custer’s death when the cops arrive. Fez orders his little bro to wash the blood off his hands to prove his innocence, but Ash instead brings his stash of weapons with him to the bathroom and loads up.

Meanwhile, Nate drives full speed ahead – while loading his own gun – to his dad’s warehouse. He finds Cal drinking around with a few scantily clad guests. Nate asks him if he’s happier living here. After some goading, Cal admits he is “in some ways.” Now, Nate doesn’t think that’s fair. He tells the whole group that when he was 11 years old, he found videos of Cal’s sexual exploits and started having nightmares of his dad doing to him what he did to those hookers on tape. Cal tries his best to apologize; he says he loves his son and should’ve kept him safe but he didn’t, and that’s his biggest regret. Nate, however, is set on revenge. He takes out his gun and reveals a flash drive that has “everything” on it. The cops arrive – Nate led them there – and they arrest Cal.

The local authorities are busy tonight. In another part of town, a SWAT team raids Fez’s home. As they storm through the house, Fez is still banging on the door to get Ash out of the bathroom, but he won’t listen, he’s too stubbornly loyal. Ash starts shooting at the SWAT team and they shoot back. In the crossfire, Fez gets hit in the side and drops to the ground in the hallway. An officer opens the bathroom door and finds Ash faking being unconscious, but he gets up and shoots the cop. Once he’s down, the red light of another SWAT member’s gun laser centers on Ash’s forehead. He’s shot and killed.

“I was in the hall when you died,” the next scene begins, featuring a flashback of young Rue reading a speech at her father’s funeral. It’s a clear parallel to Fez’s own tragedy of watching his own little brother perish in the raid.

Present-day Rue is reliving this moment as a scene in Lexi’s play. She’s moved, teary-eyed in her chair. Later on, she’ll call Lexi to tell her, “I thought your play was really beautiful,” and they make plans to hang out again. It’s a sweet moment, considering how the two have noticeably grown apart despite being thick as thieves when they were kids. “I think your play was the first time I was able to look at my life and not hate myself,” Rue tells Lexi. She later adds that watching it “meant the world” to her. They talk about their dads, how they miss them, and how often they think about them. Rue says Lexi’s absent father is probably trying to get better for her because he loves her. As they embrace, we cut to Lexi’s play ending on a similar tableau.

Over in the girls’ bathroom, Cassie is disheveled. Maddy is icing the bruises on her feet with a coke can. Cassie reveals that Nate had broken up with her before she even got on the stage earlier tonight. Maddy warns her that “this is just the beginning.”

As the auditorium clears out, Jules approaches Rue and tells her she loves her and misses her so much. Without saying anything, Rue kisses her on the head and leaves as a tear rolls down Jules’ cheek. It doesn’t seem like they’ll be getting back together soon.

In a pensive narration, Rue reflects on Jules being her first love. She also reveals that she ends up staying clean for the rest of the school year. She doesn’t know how long it will last, but she’ll keep trying. She remembers something Ali told her: “The thought of maybe being a good person is what keeps me trying to be a good person.” She thinks there might be some truth to that after all.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper Hugged and Reunited at the 2022 SAG Awards

A Star Is Born‘s Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper had a moment at the 2022 SAG Awards tonight, chatting at the ceremony. A photographer captured their reunion, one of the first times they’ve been seen in public since the 2019 Oscars, where they sparked romance rumors during their chemistry-filled performance of Shallow. The two talked and hugged:

Cooper spoke about their bond to The Hollywood Reporter in November, explaining at the Oscars, he wanted the number to unfold like a scene from the movie to help manage his own fears about singing live. “Just from a personal standpoint, it reduces the anxiety level,” Cooper said. “They kind of fall in love in that scene in the film. It’s that explosive moment that happens to happen to them on a stage in front of thousands of people. … It would have been so weird if we were both on stools facing the audience.”

He added that he was inspired by Gaga’s talent and work ethic while shooting A Star Is Born with her. A Star Is Born is such a specific thing, and there was always a meta element to the project,” he said. “She’s just so terribly charismatic and beautiful. When I met her, I thought, ‘If I can just harness that … then it’s just for me to mess up.’ But then, when we started working together, I realized, ‘Oh, oh, the sky’s the limit in terms of what she’s able to do and her commitment level.’”

Gaga also addressed the romance rumors around them that their Oscar performance generated in her December 2019 ELLE interview.

“Quite frankly, I think the press is very silly,” she said. “I mean, we made a love story. For me, as a performer and as an actress, of course we wanted people to believe that we were in love. And we wanted people to feel that love at the Oscars. We wanted it to go right through the lens of that camera and to every television that it was being watched on. And we worked hard on it, we worked for days. We mapped the whole thing out—it was orchestrated as a performance. ”

All the Best Red Carpet Looks from the SAG Awards

Cast of “Squid Game.” Photography courtesy of Getty

From Lady Gaga to HoYeon Jung, Selena Gomez and more.

Awards season is finally in full swing. After one too many virtual acceptance speeches and axed affairs, the 28th SAG Awards was a refreshing reentry to the red carpet. You want Jeremy Strong in a pink velvet tux? You got it! The cast of Squid Game cheesing for the cameras? Check. This event has it all!

The Screen Actors Guild returned to in-person pomp and pageantry Sunday (February 27) at The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California to celebrate the film and TV that defined 2021. A not-to-be-missed affair, the awards are a bellwether for the acting categories at the Oscars (to be held March 27) — and if Squid Game‘s loot is any indication of what’s to come, the South Korean drama may secure Netflix a few more accolades in the future.

Taking home awards for stunt ensemble in a TV series, male actor in a drama series (Lee Jung-Jae) and female actor in a drama series (HoYeon Jung), the cast has plenty to celebrate…including being among the best dressed actors to walk the SAG Awards red carpet, along with Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Cynthia Erivo, Carl Clemons-Hopkins and many others.

Scroll through the gallery below to see more of the best dressed celebs from the SAG Awards 2022 red carpet.

Kanye West Objects to Divorce And Says No One Can Prove He Wrote Posts About Kim Kardashian

Kanye West spent much of the last couple months writing social media posts about his ex, Kim Kardashian, and her new boyfriend, comedian Pete Davidson. Allegedly. Right now, West’s attorneys are pushing the idea that there’s no proof that West wrote the posts on Instagram or Twitter in legal docs obtained by TMZ, claiming that saying they were written by West is hearsay and inadmissible in court.

“Kim claims she read something online allegedly by Kanye and characterizes the posts in her declaration as misinformation,” the documents state. “Kim needed to offer the social media posts into evidence, and show that the posts were written by Kanye.”

The argument might not hold water. West posted actual texts between himself and Kardashian, which she surely has a record of sending on her own phone. He has also himself confessed at certain points that his posts crossed the line—which certainly insinuates he wrote them.

“I know sharing screen shots was jarring and came off as harassing Kim,” he wrote in a since deleted post. “I take accountability. I’m still learning in real time. I don’t have all the answers. To be good leader is to be a good listener.”

West also said he’d step back from writing posts in all-caps as it makes people “feel like I’m screaming at them.”

Kardashian filed last year to be “officially single” while the rest of her assets are properly divided between herself and her ex. On Thursday, Page Six shared a statement from the beauty mogul they found in legal documents about the online harassment, in which she asks a judge to sign off on her divorce papers.

“I very much desire to be divorced,” Kardashian wrote, saying West’s behavior has become a privacy issue for her entire family. “Kanye has been putting a lot of misinformation regarding our private matters and co-parenting on social media, which has created emotional distress.”

Jessie Diggins Explains the Emotional Finish Behind Her Historic Silver Medal

“No rest for the weary” is a good way to sum up Jessie Diggins’s life right now. Fresh off the 2022 Olympics (and her second and third Olympic medals), the most-decorated cross-country skier in US history is already preparing for her next competition in Lahti, Finland. “We have another month of racing starting with this weekend,” Diggins told POPSUGAR in a Team Toyota interview this week. “The whirlwind keeps on going.”

For Diggins, though, that’s not a bad thing. The post-Olympics emotional drop-off can be dizzying for some athletes, and Diggins says going straight back into competition helps her return to normalcy. “You don’t go off the edge of this adrenaline rollercoaster and then have nothing going on,” she says. Which isn’t to say it’s not exhausting — “after racing six races at the games, my body was pretty tired,” Diggins admits. Her recovery has included sleep and “a lot of chocolate.”

The Beijing Olympics ended on a high note for Diggins. In her last race of the games, the 30-kilometer mass start, Diggins earned her first-ever silver medal (she already owns gold and bronze). It was the first time a non-European woman had medaled in the 30-kilometer, and it required an effort so taxing that Diggins collapsed after crossing the finish line. The image of the 30-year-old lying prone in the snow was indelible and perhaps a bit concerning, but she assures us that she was fine afterwards: “I needed to be helped out of there because I couldn’t walk, but once I was able to come back to myself, I was OK.”

Two nights earlier, Diggins had dealt with a bad bout of food poisoning that left her feeling “hollowed out and sick” one day prior to the race. “If the race had been a day earlier, I don’t know if I would’ve been able to be on the start line,” Diggins says. “It definitely rocked my confidence.” She leaned on her team, family, and fiancé for support and says that just being able to race (to say nothing of medaling) was a “big moment.”

That 30-kilometer race demanded more of her than Diggins knew she had to give. Her legs started cramping, the muscles around her knees “spasming” with 17 kilometers still to go. As her technique disintegrated and pain set in, Diggins fought to keep her mindset as positive as possible. “Every single downhill, I was giving myself a pep talk, saying, ‘Nope, you can do this. Just use your arms. Use different parts of your body that don’t hurt right now,'” she says. She describes the race as “mentally, one of the biggest battles I’ve ever had.”

Diggins characterizes that silver-medal race as the hardest — and best — of her career so far. “It was, without a doubt, the deepest I’ve ever had to dig in my life,” she says, and she found it empowering to know just how much she could overcome — even if collapsing at the finish line is not exactly an experience she would prefer to repeat: “Just to know that strength of mind is there is really empowering in every aspect of my life, and to know that strength of team is there.”

If there’s one thing Diggins knows, it’s that success isn’t defined by whether she wins a medal at the end of the race. “For me, it’s always been a question of ‘how do I want to feel when I cross the finish line?'” she says. That’s what she asks herself when the going gets tough — when she can barely feel her legs, and her whole body aches. “I want to be able to cross the finish line and know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I gave it every single ounce of energy that I had,” she says. “Because then I know, regardless of the result, I’m going to feel proud of going out there and putting my heart on the line.”

That’s why Diggins stays in a sport that asks so much of her, and that forces her to redefine her limitations. “It makes it easy for me to be willing to keep pushing and keep digging deeper if I know that’s how I’m going to feel amazing about my race,” she says. “When the question is ‘well, should I back down a little bit, give up a little bit, or should I keep pushing?’ It’s a very easy question to answer.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made their first award show appearance of the year tonight at the NAACP Image Awards, and they wore true statement looks to mark their receiving the President’s Award at the ceremony. Harry wore a classic black Ozwald Boateng suit, while Meghan took the sartorial spotlight in blue two-tone Christopher John Rogers dress with a high leg slit. She wore her hair down in waves. Both chose to wear Black designers.

The NAACP Image Awards’ President’s Award is a high honor in recognition of special achievement and distinguished public service. Past winners include Muhammad Ali, Jesse Jackson, LeBron James, and Rihanna.

In a statement announcing Meghan and Harry receiving the award, Derrick Johnson, President and CEO of the NAACP, said, “We’re thrilled to present this award to Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who together have heeded the call to social justice and have joined the struggle for equity both in the US and around the world. Not only do they continue to lead by example, The Duke and Duchess have also decided to inspire the next generation of activists through the NAACP-Archewell Digital Civil Rights Award, ensuring the support and recognition of generations of civil rights leaders to come.”

Meghan and Harry’s appearance comes after the couple was photographed earlier this month at dinner in Santa Barbara with Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank. It was a rare public outing for the couple, who has lived a very private, low-key life with their two children Lili and Archie in Montecito, California, since stepping back from their senior royal family roles two years ago.

Forgot to Press Start on Your Workout? Here’s How to Manually Add It to Your Apple Watch

How good does it feel to crush your daily workout? You’ve pushed your muscles to the limit, kept your heart pumping, and sweat so much you need to refill your water bottle ASAP. You’re stoked to close those Apple Watch rings, too, when it happens: you realize you forgot to press the “start” button before your workout — or worse, you didn’t have your watch on at all. It’s like it didn’t even count!

Before you panic, take a deep breath. There’s actually an easy way to manually add your workout to your Apple Watch — as long as you remember the type of workout you did, the amount of time you spent working out, and a rough estimate of your calories burned, you can add your workout using the Health app on your iPhone and revel in closing those rings. Here’s how to do it.

Start by opening the Health app.

tmp_yZy95o_89431cc375741c5b_IMG_2641.PNGImage Source: Apple Health

On the bottom right, click “Browse.”

tmp_tB74yR_348002b34b4da639_IMG_2642.PNGImage Source: Apple Health

In the search bar, type “workout.”

tmp_e6Itid_997230541be35dd4_IMG_2643.PNGImage Source: Apple Health

Select the first data point that pops up (it should be a summary of your last workout). In the top-right corner, click “Add Data.”

tmp_fe5j9U_e23279b0ff86ff0f_IMG_2644.PNGImage Source: Apple Health

From there, use the dropdown menu to find the workout you just completed. Next, add the estimated calories burned, then fill out the date, start, and end time.

tmp_DD2Yfi_f58d6ad6c4316c09_IMG_2650.PNGImage Source: Apple Health

Click “Add” in the top-right corner. This will take you back to the main workout screen, where you can see the workout you just added under “Highlights.”

tmp_uMneBx_0e2dd7ef92bf9022_IMG_2651.PNGImage Source: Apple Health

You can go back to your summary and see the exercise and calories burned.

tmp_RV6Ygo_19db9e21381db5bd_IMG_2652.PNGImage Source: Apple Health

Wait a few minutes, then check the watch Fitness app on your phone. It will show that satisfying ring movement you’ve been missing. (Note: filling in the workout data will allow the green exercise ring and pink calorie ring to move, but it won’t change the stand ring.)

tmp_DC69J4_59058c0f30896fdd_IMG_2654.PNGImage Source: Apple Health

Look at your Apple Watch and see the changes reflected there. You’ll never have to worry about forgetting to log your workout again!

Kourtney Kardashian Wears Black Mini Dress With Travis Barker For Avril Lavigne Concert

On Friday, engaged couple Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker got dressed up for a night at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, where Avril Lavigne was performing to promote her new album Love Sux. The adorable pair look fashionable and sexy, neither one leaving much to the imagination with their looks.

Kardashian was wearing a short, skintight velvet dressed with bell sleeves and a mock turtle neck. Her legs were even more emphasized by a pair of black, thigh high boots with a tall heel.

Barker was shirtless, and decorated mainly by his many colorful tattoos. He wore a navy beanie and a pair of low-slung shiny black pants over black shoes. He added a touch of color with a red belt and carried his white drumsticks in one hand as they walked, his arm slung across Kardashian’s shoulders. Her only accessory were crimson nails, and she kept her make up and sleek bob simple.

The couple met with their friends Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly, who are also newly engaged, at the show. Machine Gun Kelly made an appearance on stage himself and is featured on the album for Lavigne’s second track on the album titled “Bois Lie.” He wore a graphic print t-shirt in pink and black to match his newly dyed hair, in a dusty rose.

Barker, who co-produced the song, was also playing on stage while Lavigne sang and Machine Gun Kelly shot off a bottle of champagne, hitting fans in the front row with sparkling wine.

Barker and Kardashian have been planning their wedding, a source told the Daily Mail.

“[Kourtney] doesn’t want any details of her wedding getting out as she wants it to be a surprise to guests,” the insider said. “It’s going to be a fairy tale wedding for sure, though.”

Including a new and improved foundation from Make Up For Ever and a face oil for radiant skin from Charlotte Tilbury.

The Ordinary Hair Care is here

The internet’s favourite beauty rebel is finally bringing what they do so well in skincare (scientific formulas, utter transparency and excellent prices) to your hair routine. One of the biggest messages sure to turn heads is the brand’s pro-sulfate approach. In recent years, beauty fans have turned against the ingredient (which creates lather but is also thought to be overly drying to the hair), however The Ordinary’s stance is that it’s still the key to effectively ditching dirt and sebum when used in the correct concentrations (instead of, say, as the first or second ingredient). The hair care line from The Ordinary contains a shampoo (with 4 per cent sulphate) that can also be used on the body, a light conditioner and a post-wash hydrating scalp treatment with hyaluronic acid.

Charlotte Tilbury drops a new facial oil for glowing skin

Charlotte Tilbury’s new Collagen Superfusion Facial Oil is formulated with a potent plant-based protein (which the brand calls the next-generation collagen matrix) that plumps skin and leaves a radiant glow while also forming a barrier on the skin to seal in moisture throughout the day or overnight. For a relaxing spa-like experience, it also contains lavender, Damask rose, neroli and eucalyptus oils.

Make Up For Ever reformulates its popular HD Foundation

Designed with a new bottle made from 40 per cent recycled glass, a bio-sourced cap and FSC carton, Make Up For Ever’s new and improved HD Skin Foundation has been developed to mimic and blend in with your skin as realistically as possible under any light source. The long-time industry darling is also water- and sweat-proof and instantly blurs the complexion. It’s also buildable for light to full coverage in a semi-matte finish. If you’re already a fan, many of the existing shades will still be available in the new 40-shade offering, which serves up hues in four shade families and three undertones.

Ogx introduces a new anti-fall shampoo

Just as you wouldn’t start your morning sans your customary cup o’ joe, the new hopped-up Anti-Hair Fall + Coconut Caffeine Shampoo and Conditioner from Ogx may just become another one of your A.M. must-haves. The formula works to strengthen hair and cut down on lost strands due to over-styling and breakage. Fortified with coconut oil, caffeine and coffee extract, hair is left looking fuller and more resilient to brushing, heat styling and general tension (not to mention smelling heavenly, too.)

Restart your complexion with Holifrog’s new exfoliating mask

Holistic skincare brand Holifrog (inspired by how the skin of frogs is so thin and permeable it absorbs everything in its surroundings) has released a new type of exfoliating mask that goes way beyond your standard skin smoothing processes. Instead, the Kosi Multi-Acid Mask reaches the cellular level to prevent further skin damage and help eradicate signs of stressed skin, such as general dullness and splotchy patches. A mega-blend of AHAs, PHA and BHA help brighten the skin and target hyper-pigmentation. The mask also contains anti-inflammatory magnesium and a potent blend of anti-oxidants such as neem leaf, gingko biloba and turmeric root to calm and protect the skin.

What Are the Benefits of Using CBD Lubricant? We Asked a Sex Therapist

Editor’s Note: We at POPSUGAR recognize that people of many genders and identities, including but not limited to women, may or may not have female sex organs such as vulvas or vaginas. This particular story includes language from studies and experts that generally refer to people with female sex organs as women.

You may be familiar with CBD as an ingredient in beauty products, snacks, and even sparkling beverages. But did you know that it’s also made its way into sexual wellness products, such as personal lubricant and intimacy oils?

If you’ve never used a CBD lubricant, you may be curious about the benefits of using one during sexual activity. To find out, we reached out to Laurie Mintz, Ph.D., a sexpert for LELO and author of “Becoming Cliterate” and “A Tired Woman’s Guide to Passionate Sex.” Keep scrolling for info on what you should know before using CBD lube, the possible benefits of CBD, and more.

What Are the Benefits of CBD in Lubricants and Arousal Oils?

First, let’s start with the benefits CBD-infused lubricants and arousal oils might offer. According to Dr. Mintz, while there isn’t currently any published scientific research on the effects of CBD on sexual function, “there is related research that can shed light on this question, as well as a wealth of anecdotal evidence from users who swear by it.”

Dr. Mintz points out that research has found that CBD can help reduce anxiety. “Additionally, according to Harvard Health Publishing, while more research on humans is needed, one animal study found that CBD could lower pain and reduce inflammation,” she says.

Dr. Mintz also mentions that CBD is thought to increase blood flow and help with smooth-muscle relaxation: “These findings are why many sex therapists and educators suggest that CBD-infused lubricants might be especially helpful for women who have pain during intercourse or other sexual encounters.”

In general, there’s a lot anecdotal evidence to support the use of CBD. You may have positive experiences with CBD products yourself or heard stories from friends about how CBD has helped ease certain issues. So what are some examples of anecdotal evidence related to CBD lubricants? According to Dr. Mintz, “countless reports by women point to the notion that CBD lubes increase touch receptivity and sensitivity, and even heighten orgasms.”

This, she says, could be due to increased blood flow — it could also be the placebo effect. “However, it’s essential to note that this isn’t all in your head — research shows that believing in something can actually alter physiological responses,” she says. Dr. Mintz also says that anecdotal evidence suggests that CBD lubricant doesn’t have as much benefit for a person with a penis, and that the skin on the penis is thicker than vulvar skin.

Not all products containing CBD use the same type of CBD, which may play a part in the results experienced. Dr. Mintz says that some CBD lubes are labeled “full-spectrum,” meaning they contain CBD, hemp-derived cannabinoids, and small amounts of THC — but that this amount of THC is generally less than 0.3 percent. “While the amount of THC in these products is too small to get you high, they might even provide even more sexual benefits given the research on the positive effects of THC on sexual functioning.” One study, she says, found “a positive relationship between marijuana use (THC) and sexual frequency in both women and men,” while another study found cannabis to have potential positive and negative effects on sexual effects.

What You Should Do Before Trying CBD Lubricant and Arousal Oils

Because CBD can interfere with certain medications, Dr. Mintz says it’s a good idea to check in with your doctor and get the OK before using CBD products. “This is especially important if you plan to ingest the CBD oil, either directly or during oral sex,” she says.

She mentions that certain brands, like FLORA + BAST, test their products for passive oral ingestion, like during oral sex. According to FLORA + BAST, the APHRODISIA Intimate Arousal Oil ($77) can be consumed orally.

Read the CBD Product Ingredients and Purpose

While certain products are designed to help lubricate and are marketed as lubricants made with CBD, others are actually designated as arousal oils infused with CBD. Generally, Dr. Mintz says, arousal oils are meant to enhance sensation.

Both of these products are frequently made with different types of ingredients and tend to have different purposes or benefits. If you’re interested in using one, be sure to check over the label and product description to ensure you’re getting a formula that’s right for you.

“In terms of CBD products that promise lubrication, the ingredient that promises the lubrication can be oil, water, or silicone — although generally it is water or silicone, whereas those products labeled CBD arousal oils generally have oils only vs. water or silicone,” Dr. Mintz says. An extremely important note: oil-based products should not be used with latex condoms, as oil can cause them to break down. Certain silicone sex toys are incompatible with oil products as well.

As with any product that’s meant to be applied or used near the genital region, it’s important to thoroughly read over the ingredients list to make sure the formula doesn’t contain any personal or known irritants to the vulva or vagina. “For example, some have alcohol products in them (check for any ingredient ending in ‘-ol’), which can dry and irritate the vulva,” Dr. Mintz says. “Others may contain sugars or glycerin, which can be a culprit in yeast infections if you are prone.”

One way to potentially prevent irritation from occurring when using a new product is to do a patch test. “This is always a good idea — regardless of whether it’s a CBD lube or just a regular lube you’ve never used before,” Dr. Mintz says. “Test it on the inside skin of your arm. It’s also a good idea to put a bit on your sex toy if you are going to use one and make sure the toy doesn’t change colors or get sticky.”

If you’re unsure if your product is compatible with your condoms or safe for you to use, reach out to your healthcare provider for advice.

Prince George Accompanies Kate Middleton and Prince William to Rugby Match

Prince George accompanied the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for England’s Six Nations match against Wales on Saturday at Twickenham Stadium. As Prince William and Kate Middleton’s eldest son, Prince George has been to football matches with his parents before. William is a patron of Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and Middleton stans for England. They’re frequently on opposite sides of sporting rivalries, but it’s all in good fun.

Middleton was wearing a scarf in her team’s colors as she explained the game to George. The eight-year-old was wearing a red and navy puffer jacket and brought a stuffed toy to view the festivities with him.

Middleton also wore a houndstooth patterned Knightsbridge Coat from Holland Cooper over a high-necked black sweater, while the duke wore a black sweater over a white button down shirt with a red tie.

Middleton was attending her first match since becoming patron of Rugby Football Union (RFU), a role that formerly went to her brother-in-law Prince Harry, before he moved to California with wife Meghan Markle. After Middleton’s patronage was announced, a source told the Daily Mail, “[The Duke and Duchess] are famously competitive with each other and this will be no different – probably even more so now that they have an invested interest in the outcome of the game.”

The Duchess is also a royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

On Saturday, the Duke and Duchess also took time to tweet a personal message to Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, writing, “In October 2020 we had the privilege to meet President Zelenskyy and the First Lady to learn of their hope and optimism for Ukraine’s future.”

Are Love Is Blind’s Natalie and Shayne Still Together?

The second season of Love Is Blind has featured so many shocking moments, and the wedding episode only upped the ante.

But one of the biggest questions viewers want answered is, are Natalie Lee and Shayne Jansen still together after what happened at the altar? Here’s everything we know about the couple.

What happened in the Love Is Blind finale?

Before their wedding, Shayne and Natalie seemed like one of the strongest couples. Their quirky senses of humor seemed to mesh, and even their families appeared to like the partnership. Unfortunately, Shayne and Natalie had a huge fight the night before their wedding. The fight apparently transpired when Natalie asked her husband-to-be if he’d maybe had too much to drink. In the heat of the moment, Shayne told Natalie he hated her and that she was the worst thing that ever happened to him. Ouch.

At the altar, Natalie told Shayne she couldn’t marry him, saying, “I think we’ve grown a lot as two people who have fallen in love. I know I’ve grown a lot because of you. But I don’t. I’m so sorry. I still love you and you’re still my best friend but, like, we have really big issues to sort through.”

Afterwards, outside the venue Natalie indicated that she didn’t want to break up. “We can still try to work on this,” she told him. “I’m not closing the door on us.” However, Shayne seemed pretty heartbroken about Natalie’s decision to say no, and told cameras that he didn’t think there was a way back from this. While Natalie wanted to work on their problems, Shayne was too distraught to know what to do next.

Are Shayne and Natalie still together?

With another new episode coming on March 3, fans are likely to find out which couples continued their relationships after the weddings. For now, there’s still a little mystery surrounding Natalie and Shayne.

Judging by Shayne and Natalie’s Instagram accounts, they’re still on speaking terms. They follow each other, and fans have noticed some low-key flirty interactions between them.

And when Shayne shared some special moments from his Love Is Blind journey, Natalie made her feelings known. “To say I had a crazy week is an understatement! As I reflect back on the pods and my time in Mexico, I made some great connections and life long friends,” Shayne wrote on Instagram. “I want to make sure everyone knows that Natalie is [an] incredible woman with a huge heart and I hope everyone stays tune[d] to see how it all unfolds! I wouldn’t trade my time on this wild ride for anything. ❤️.” Natalie commented simply with a heart emoji, which speaks volumes.

The CDC Changed Its Masking Guidelines — Here’s What It Means For You

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced new guidance on face masks today as the US continues to shift its strategy towards the COVID-19 pandemic. In essence, the CDC will now consult new metrics to determine whether a community should enforce indoor masking, looking at COVID-19 hospital admissions, overall hospital capacity, and new COVID-19 cases as the deciding factors. The result? Currently, only about 28 percent of people in the US live in a county where they’d be recommended to wear a mask indoors, per the CDC’s new metrics. The universal masking recommendation for schools has been dropped as well.

Explaining the decision to ease up on masks, CDC director Rochelle Walensky, MD, MPH, told reporters, “We want to give people a break from things like mask-wearing when our levels are low, and then have the ability to reach for them again if things get worse in the future.” Previously, case counts were used as the sole measuring stick for whether Americans should mask up. Now, though, the vaccine is widely available, and the waves of infection that came with the Omicron and Delta variants resulted in mostly mild symptoms that didn’t require hospitalization. The Omicron variant infected a large proportion of the country as well, which has temporarily boosted overall immunity in the US.

Still, the CDC recommends that people at high risk of severe COVID-19 or complications should consider extra precautions, such as talking to a doctor about wearing a mask indoors and other safety measures. The new guidance is also meant to be flexible enough to cover potential future outbreaks, variants, and changes in the pandemic. “None of us know what the future holds for us and for this virus,” Dr. Walensky said. “And we need to be prepared and we need to be ready for whatever comes next.”

The CDC’s website features a map of US counties and current COVID-19 levels and breaks down how the levels — low, medium, and high — are determined. Indoor masking is no longer recommended in low- and medium-level counties.

How Does the CDC Define COVID-19 Community Levels?

Here’s how the CDC defines each level of COVID-19 risk at a community level.

For low COVID-19 community levels, the county must meet all of the below criteria:

  • Fewer than 200 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days
  • Fewer than 10 total new COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people over the past seven days
  • Less than 10 percent of staffed hospital beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients on average over the past seven days

For medium COVID-19 community levels, the county must meet all of the below criteria:

  • Fewer than 200 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days
  • Between 10 and 19.9 total new COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people over the past seven days
  • Between 10 and 14.9 percent of staffed hospital beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients on average over the past seven days
  • If a community has 200 or more COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days, it can still qualify as a medium level if new COVID-19 admissions are fewer than 10 people per 100,000, and less than 10 percent of staffed inpatient hospital beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients, on average.

For high COVID-19 community levels, the county must meet all of the below criteria:

  • Fewer than 200 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days
  • 20 or more total new COVID-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people over the past seven days
  • 15 percent or more of staffed hospital beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients on average over the past seven days
  • If a community has 200 or more COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days, it will qualify as a high level if new COVID-19 admissions are more than 10 people per 100,000, and more than 10 percent of staffed inpatient hospital beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients, on average.

What Do the New CDC Masking Guidelines Mean For Me?

The CDC also provides tips for what precautions you should take based on your community’s level.

For low COVID-19 community levels:

  • Stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccines and boosters
  • Maintain good ventilation in indoor spaces
  • Follow CDC quarantine and isolation guidelines if you have or have been exposed to COVID-19

For medium COVID-19 community levels:

  • Take all of the above precautions
  • If you’re immunocompromised or at high risk for severe COVID-19, talk to your doctor about wearing a mask and taking other precautions, and have a plan for rapid testing if necessary.

For high COVID-19 community levels:

  • Take all of the above precautions
  • Wear a well-fitting mask indoors, even if you’re vaccinated. This applies to schools and other indoor community settings.
  • If you’re immunocompromised or at high risk for severe COVID-19, wear a mask or respirator that provides greater protection.

The CDC notes that people with COVID-19 symptoms, people who have been exposed to COVID-19, or people who have tested positive for COVID-19 should wear a mask.

Mask-wearing in schools, which has been a flashpoint for months, will be determined based on these same community levels. “We know that also because children are relatively at lower risk from severe illness that schools can be safe places for children,” explained senior CDC official Greta Massetti, PhD, according to ABC News. “And so for that reason, we’re recommending that schools use the same guidance that we are recommending in general community settings, which is that we’re recommending people wear a mask in high levels of COVID-19 [risk].”

Should I Still Wear a Mask?

The CDC’s masking guidelines are just that — guidelines — which means that your community’s rules and your own choices will dictate whether you’ll continue wear a mask. If your community still requires indoor masking in all or some indoor spaces, continue to follow those rules; if it doesn’t, the choice to mask or not will become a matter of your preference, so make sure you take multiple factors into account.

Note, also, that people who feel more safe or comfortable wearing a mask may continue to do so. Even with some masking requirements lifting, “we must grapple with the fact that millions of people in the U.S. are immunocompromised, more susceptible to severe COVID outcomes, or still too young to be eligible for the vaccine,” said Gerald Harmon, MD, president of the American Medical Association in a statement responding to the new CDC guidelines. “In light of those facts, I personally will continue to wear a mask in most indoor public settings, and I urge all Americans to consider doing the same, especially in places like pharmacies, grocery stores, on public transportation — locations all of us, regardless of vaccination status or risk factors, must visit regularly.” Wearing a well-fitted mask remains “an effective way to protect ourselves and our communities,” Dr. Harmon explained, and the choice becomes more of a personal one, rather than a required rule, as the CDC eases its masking guidelines.
