Peloton Just Announced New Heart Rate Band For $90

Peloton just announced a new accessory, the Heart Rate Band ($90), which is compatible with the original Peloton Bike, Bike+, the Tread, the off-market Tread+, the Peloton Guide (coming in 2022), and the Peloton app. By wearing the arm band, you’ll be able to monitor your athletic performance, and get credit for your effort, which is an added layer of motivation.

What Is the Peloton Arm Band?

Unlike the existing Peloton Heart Rate Monitor which is worn on the chest, according to Peloton, the Heart Rate Band is worn on the user’s forearm. It comes in two sizes, small and large, and uses optical technology to accurately measure your pulse. An awesome feature is that it uses wireless Bluetooth technology to seamlessly connect to any Peloton device, and then displays your heart rate on the screen.

You can also see a quick view of your heart rate zone with the five multi-colored LED lights shown on the band (see photo below). The lights also correspond with the Strive Score categories, a personal, non-competitive metric featured on the Peloton tablet, that measures time spent in each heart rate zone so you can track how hard you’re pushing throughout each workout.

This arm band can be used with Peloton gear, but it’s also compatible with third-party gym equipment and apps that support Bluetooth heart rate monitor technology. When you purchase the Heart Rate Band, it comes with the heart rate pod, an armband, a charger, and a USB adapter. The heart rate pod features a rechargeable battery, with 10 hours of battery life.

The armband is made of 1.5-inch-thick stretchy knit fabric, with grippy material on the inside to help it stay put while you’re working out. It attaches with velcro, so you can put it on and take it off quickly, and get a comfortable, snug fit. The Peloton Heart Rate Band can be purchased individually for $90 or as part of the Bike Select Set ($330).

Modern Heroines

If hearing the words “Disney Princess” brings to mind images of damsels in distress waiting for their Prince Charming, you’re skipping over Cinderella’s determination to overcome the adversity she faced, despite her circumstances—or Moana’s daring quest to save her home and her people from an ecological disaster. As part of Disney’s Ultimate Princess Celebration, ELLE is honoring 14 real-life heroes and heroines who embody the spirit of Disney’s beloved princesses, who continue to inspire people worldwide, regardless of age. Read on to learn how Eva Longoria, Misty Copeland, Amanda Nguyen, and Padma Lakshmi incorporate lessons from Jasmine, Belle, Mulan, and Tiana into their daily lives. And watch this space in the coming months for 10 more profiles of courage and kindness.

“People think I’m an actor turned producer/director, but I’ve always been a producer/director who fell into acting,” says Eva Longoria. Before too long, that ambiguity will be gone with the release of Flamin’ Hot, the Searchlight Pictures biopic of Frito-Lay executive Richard Montañez, and Longoria’s first feature-film director credit. After that, Longoria will produce, direct, and costar in the Kerry Washington–led comedy 24-7 and the action comedy film Spa Day.

Throughout her career, Longoria has been active in immigration advocacy and Latinx causes. This past winter, she helped deliver meals and water during the disastrous winter storm in Texas. “Careerwise, directing, producing, and acting, that’s what I do, but who I am is more important,” she says. “Affordable housing and health care, access to quality education—those things are a little more important than who’s watching my TV show.” But in terms of feeling seen onscreen, Longoria says the film Aladdin was a revelation. “I loved Jasmine,” she says of the spirited character, who also happened to be Disney’s first princess of color. “She had dark hair and dark skin. I was like, ‘She looks like me!’ ”

Misty Copeland

Misty Copeland is back in the studio. After more than a year of training remotely, the American Ballet Theatre principal—and perhaps the biggest name in American dance—is hard at work on Flower, a short dance film and “love letter” to Oakland, California, which addresses the city’s history of redlining and gentrification. “This time has been a beautiful transitional learning process for me,” says the Armani Crossroads ambassador of the pause in her grueling schedule.

Copeland, who became part of the Disney family when she starred in the 2018 film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, says that Disney films were her first introduction to dance as a child. In conversation (and while performing), the creative powerhouse embodies the grace and warmth of Frozen’s Elsa, but growing up, Copeland felt a strong connection to Belle of Beauty and the Beast. “I loved the way she would move throughout the town, with such poise and grace, even though she wasn’t this wealthy, elite princess,” she says. “I also loved The Little Mermaid. Ariel and Belle were my two favorites—I was obsessed with them.—AG

Amanda Nguyen just passed a law. Her thirty-seventh, in fact. After being raped in college, Nguyen started the organization Rise, which put together the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights, designed to make the reporting process more streamlined. It’s been passed federally and in 30 states, as well as Washington, DC. “It’s absolutely possible to create change,” she says.

This year, in the face of an epidemic of racist violence, Rise pivoted to include work on advocacy for the AAPI community. Nguyen, who grew up loving Mulan, appreciates how Disney princesses and queens show that bravery doesn’t have to stick to only a masculine presentation, “that you can be brave while being vulnerable, that courage doesn’t mean lack of fear,” she says. “I think Disney princesses and queens are such feminists.”

Even with all she has achieved, Nguyen, who interned for NASA, still has one big goal: space. She’s long been vocal about her dream of becoming an astronaut and hints that it just might come true. “I’ll just say that I’m very excited for my future, and I still very much want to be an astronaut.”—AG

THE TENACIOUS FOODIE

Padma Lakshmi

When Padma Lakshmi’s daughter Krishna, was very young, the Top Chef and Taste the Nation host told her stories of food bringing families and cultures together. A version of those stories has evolved into Tomatoes for Neela, Lakshmi’s debut children’s book, out August 31 via Viking Books for Young Readers. Krishna is 11 now, “but books for kids take a long time!” Lakshmi says with a laugh. “In our fast-paced lives, one of the things we’ve lost—which I hope we’ve regained a little bit [in quarantine]—is the art of just spending time together, and passing down skills and knowledge and all of those family stories.”

Another story involving family and food that Lakshmi and her daughter bond over is Disney’s The Princess and the Frog. “We love Tiana because she’s very steadfast and doesn’t expect an easy way out,” Lakshmi says. “A lot of success in life comes from talent, but more sustained success comes from diligence and working hard and understanding that there’s no one set, fixed goal you’ll arrive at where you’ve ‘made it.’ I think that is truly a fairy tale.” —Melissa Giannini

How Vintage Went Viral

Directly below the Manhattan Bridge, on the mostly-vacant second floor of a Chinatown mall, there is a highly curated array of eveningwear at the vintage mecca James Veloria. When they were first released in the late ’90s and early aughts, many of these garments would have been displayed in gleaming department stores. But now, surrounded by tinsel and jewel-toned faux fur, these Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, and Todd Oldham gems have taken on new life—due in large part to TikTok’s ravenous appetite for Y2K-era fashion. This past summer, before the store moved into its new space down the hall from the original, lines wound through the empty mall’s corridors. “Everyone was like, ‘Oh, we saw it on TikTok,’” says co-owner Brandon Veloria Giordano. “I feel like we maybe went viral, or people started doing [TikToks] in the store.” The mirrored walls are certainly an inviting setup.

Arguably, the thirtysomething owners have been preparing for this moment for their entire careers. Today, they’re among the industry’s foremost curators of all things retro, their assortment often overlapping with the fashion trending on the short-form video app. Thanks to TikTok’s algorithm, anything is fair game: ladies-who-lunch Pucci prints, Vivienne Westwood orb chokers, Courrèges vinyl jackets from the ’70s. And as TikTokers resurface these long-ago trends and make them newly au courant, the brands themselves are finding ways to make them feel new again.

When Nicolas Di Felice took the helm at Courrèges in late 2020, his first gesture was reissuing the label’s iconic vinyl cropped jacket in a rainbow of colors. The jacket had changed shape significantly since André Courrèges introduced it, Di Felice says: “It kept becoming boxier and boxier—it looked like a little cube by the end.” Di Felice looked to Courrèges’s original pattern, which was cut closer to the body. “It’s a bit more fitted at the waist, and certainly has more attitude. It looks like you’re a little [bit] biker.”

He reinterpreted the accompanying A-line miniskirt and altered the fit to account for the way people’s bodies have changed since the ’70s. “I always say with Courrèges, you have to keep everything and you have to change everything,” Di Felice says. “I never take a pattern as it was.” He did revert to the house’s original logo, in part because he wanted consistency between new items and the ’70s ones in vintage shops today. Online, he sees young people gravitating toward classics like the ribbed-trim top with a tiny logo in the center. “I think it’s amazing that our vintage and new pieces are mixing so well together on the same platform, and that most of the time it’s the same woman or girl who wants to wear them.”

Vintage dealer Olivia Haroutounian gained a cult following on TikTok (@reallifeasliv) for her deep dives into oft-overlooked early-aughts labels like Ema Savahl and Elisa Jimenez. “I like to cover designers who don’t get as much recognition,” she says. “TikTok has helped grow my business.” These days, she sees “crazy Vivienne Westwood pieces,” Gaultier, and Cavalli making the rounds on the app’s ephemeral slide show of videos.

Posts tagged #vintage have been viewed more than 11.5 billion times, per TikTok, which also confirmed that those designers are trending. Westwood in particular has become one of the app’s favorites, and this past fall, James Veloria devoted its special collection room to the designer. “We’re delighted that new generations are discovering Vivienne’s work,” says Christopher Di Pietro, Westwood’s global brand director, adding that young people “want to hear authentic voices speaking about issues that are important to them and not just trying to sell them the latest thing. Perhaps this is why Vivienne Westwood and her designs are so relevant on TikTok.”

Giordano and Haroutounian both cite Blumarine, which has used its recent collections to play up its early-aughts aesthetic, as another standout. Ever since Nicola Brognano became creative director of the house in late 2019, he says, he’s “wanted to show collections that talk about happiness, sexiness, freedom.” The era is close to his heart because he was a teenager then. “It was natural to me to present [those years] to the Blumarine audience,” Brognano says. “TikTok is making [it] very clear that I’m on the right track.”

For spring 2022, he revisited the label’s rose pattern and the BluVi cardigan. When designing, he says, “I always take into consideration the archive and the DNA of the brand.” So far, he’s succeeded by adding a wink of self-awareness. After all, when women get dressed, Giordano notes, “It’s not so much about looking sexy for someone else, but about doing it for yourself and your friends.”

“TikTok is making [it] very clear that I’m on the right track.”

—Blumarine creative director Nicola Brognano

Once upon a time, a Milanese designer would not have taken micro video clips into consideration when it came time to dream up a new collection. But TikTok has turned into a stock ticker of sorts—giving designers insight into how their archives are resonating, sellers the inside track on which collections might pop next, and buyers the scoop on stores like Giordano’s. More broadly, it’s upended the fashion industry’s top-down structure: A 14-year-old influencer posting from her bedroom might now wield a Diana Vreeland–like influence on which items will be resurrected to “It” status.

Giordano and his partner Collin James Weber believe Stella McCartney–era Chloé will see a revival in the coming months. “We’ve been holding a lot of her pieces for a while because we’re waiting for the right moment,” Giordano says. (“It’s almost ready,” Weber adds.) But, in the ultimate irony, for all their store’s popularity on TikTok, Giordano says, “I’ve actually never posted anything on the app.”

“Cal, Zip Your Pants” and Other Thoughts We Had During Euphoria Tonight

Euphoria spoilers below.

Rue is a good liar, but she can’t fake an orgasm. When the latest Euphoria episode begins with her in bed with Jules, Rue is so high she can’t feel a thing. But she must keep her secret–that she’s on drugs again–from her girlfriend, so she pretends that it feels “amazing” and finishes off the performance with an unconvincing climax. Jules is not fooled.

Jules tells Elliot about about the incident with a cringe-inducing impression and he suggests, maybe, she sucks at oral sex. In an uncomfortable exchange, he does a demonstration on her hand; then she gives it a try on his fist. One thing leads to another and they start kissing in his bed. (Not cool on Jules’ part, considering she was so insecure about Rue potentially cheating on her with Elliot.) Their makeout session is interrupted when Rue arrives at Elliot’s house.

Now, over to Nate’s mess. In one scene he’s visiting Maddy while she’s babysitting, reminiscing on their love and possibly heading toward a reunion. In the next, he’s in his room arguing with Cassie. She’s saying she wouldn’t have slept with him if she knew he and Maddy were getting back together (he insists they’re not), and she will do her best to keep them apart because their relationship is “toxic.”

He calls BS. Somewhere in the fray, he calls Cassie Maddy by accident. Nate can compare the two girls all he wants, but Cassie makes one thing clear: she’s crazier than her best friend, and he should be scared of that. (We already are, bestie.) As she storms out of his house, Nate has the audacity to tell Cassie “I love you.”

At Maddy’s birthday party, Cassie is pulling out all the stops–hosting the event at her house, setting out a customized cake, and gifting her a scrapbook of their friendship that sends them both crying. The sweet girls’ night will soon be interrupted by Nate. He’s at home ready to head over, but not before Cal–his head still bandaged from those Ash-inflicted wounds last episode–drunkenly mocks him before he leaves.

Meanwhile, Jules and Elliot are not being careful, resuming their make-out session while Rue is in! the! bathroom! When she returns, Rue kisses Elliot on a dare and he says they should make Jules jealous. Rue sighs “that was amazing,” like she did when she was hooking up with Jules. Jules notices and dares Elliot to lick her stomach. As if this boy has not done enough damage, he suggests that if they’re going to continue these “lesbian power games,” they should steal some liquor. That of course doesn’t go well; the store owner smashes Elliot’s car window as they drive away. It looks like they did get a case of hard seltzers, though.

Back at Maddy’s party, Kat confesses to the birthday girl that she “can’t fucking stand Ethan.” After dropping some tasteless slurs, Maddy gives her friend some wise advice: Do what feels good to you. Then, Nate arrives. He barely gives Cassie the time of day and gifts Maddy a Tiffany’s necklace.

Cassie is not handling this well. After a few more drinks, she makes an impromptu wardrobe change–into a strappy pink swimsuit that catches Nate’s eye. Lexi is concerned, and so are we.

Cal is a DUI waiting to happen. He swerves his way back to the bar where he danced with his high school best friend and–secret sweetheart–Derek for the first time in 25 years. On the jukebox, he plays “Drink Before the War” by Sinead O’Connor and starts slow dancing with a stranger who he imagines as his former love. “I thought I lost you,” he whispers.

Cassie is dancing alone to the same song at Maddy’s house, getting tangled in balloons while swigging champagne. Somehow she’s belting every word to this 1987 ballad–maybe her parents played a lot of Sinead at home while she was growing up? Looking on from a distance, Maddy calls the scene “tragic,” aptly.

Rue is now drinking while high in the car. Elliot is concerned that she’s mixing alcohol with other drugs. Jules is concerned that she’s even drinking at all, because she thinks Rue is staying sober. Rue snaps at them; she makes Elliot drop her off on the side of the road and walks the rest of the way home. Jules goes back to Elliot’s place to take a shower, then borrows a shirt, changes in front of him, and turns off her phone. Rue takes more drugs from her suitcase stash, sending us all shaking our heads.

Cassie stumbles into the hot tub with Nate, Maddy, and the girls. When someone mentions that Maddy and Nate are back together, the conversation goes something like this:

Maddy: “We’re not back together.”
Cassie: “You’re not?”
Nate: “No.”
Maddy: “I mean, I was gonna say no but why are you saying no?”
Nate: “Because we’re not?”
Maddy: “I know, but why are you being so definitive about it?”
Nate: “I wasn’t being definitive.”
Maddy: “It sounded like it.”

You get the picture. As the conversation escalates, Maddy calls Nate out for always gaslighting her, for begging her to take him back, telling her he loves her, asking her to move with him when they leave for college, saying she should marry him and have his babies. This is new to all of us–and especially for Cassie, who’s quietly getting crushed by Maddy’s every word. When she can’t take it anymore, Cassie literally bursts–she throws up on everyone in the hot tub, sending the guests screaming and running away. Her mother drags her out of the water as she sobs and apologizes to Maddy for ruining everything.

At her lowest point of the night, Cassie is covered in tears and her own vomit, her mom escorting her up the stairs as Nate watches.

Back at Elliot’s house, Elliot reveals the truth to Jules: Rue is not sober. She’s been doing “everything from heroin to fentanyl to benzos” and he’s been taking the drugs with her. Jules is heartbroken.

Meanwhile, Rue is on a high. On her trip, she walks into a church with Labrinth singing gospel at the altar. When he embraces her, she imagines hugging her dad. She apologizes for letting him down. She misses him so much.

Cal gets thrown out of the bar for trying to wrestle his dance partner, and it’s amazing he makes it back alive. But things quickly go downhill. He urinates in the foyer. He tells his wife he’s lonely and ignores his family’s requests to “put his dick away.” (Please man, just zip up your jeans.) Then, he starts revealing his secrets: “Do you know how many men I’ve fucked?” he puts it bluntly.

He tells his sons that he had sex with a man for the first time when Marsha, his wife, was pregnant with Aaron, the firstborn. When his family is in disbelief, he points out a double standard: If he said he took a stripper home and slept with her, they would’ve reacted differently. “I’ll fuck whoever I want, whenever I want,” he declares–referring to men, women, and trans people–“and I’ll have a mighty fine time doing it.” I mean, thanks for championing equity, Cal, but you’re still a monster.

Still, the distressed dad says living a double life isn’t his biggest regret; Nate is. (Ouch.) Aaron doesn’t go unscathed; Cal calls him out for the atrocious porn he found on his computer. On his way out the door, Cal blames his family for stifling him. “I’m not allowed to form an emotional connection. And I’m an emotional guy,” he says. He bids them goodbye, bringing nothing with him but the family portrait he took off the wall.

“I’ll see you assholes later.”

One Woman’s Reminder to Not Succumb to “Summer Body” Pressure

If you’ve seen videos floating around on social media urging you to take a photo of yourself now, and then again in six months, Jaimmy Koroma shared this amazing video in response, saying, “There’s nothing wrong with looking exactly the way you do now six months from now.”

Koroma tells POPSUGAR, “As soon as the new year rolls around, we are bombarded from January up until summer to change our bodies, to ‘get ready for summer,’ or that ‘this is the year you finally lose the weight.'” Koroma says that the sheer volume of “film your body now and then again in the summer” videos — from both men and women — broke her heart. “But what if your body doesn’t change? Will you not enjoy your summer? Are you not enough right now? I just had to try to put my video amongst the mix,” Koroma says.

Embracing her body wasn’t always easy for Koroma. “I wish I could say I have always had a positive outlook about my body, but I definitely grew up seeing SlimFast in everyone’s fridge and Jenny Craig during every commercial break.” She adds, “Every summer since I was 13, I would try to lose weight so I could be pretty, and it did not happen. I wish I could tell that little girl that she was pretty, but that she was much more than that.” This turning point didn’t happen for her until about two to three years ago. She admits that if you scroll down long enough on her Instagram page, you’ll see that it used to be a weight-loss account, with pictures of food and before-and-afters. “It’s taken a lot of unlearning and learning to get here,” Koroma says.

To anyone who thinks they need to change or shrink their body to “get ready for summer,” Koroma says, “You don’t. You don’t need to change your body in order to put on a pair of shorts, wear a bikini, or enjoy your life. Life is too short and has so much more to offer if you stop focusing on what you look like. It’s about adventure and making memories. And you, right now, you’re already ready!”

Koroma says a lot of people see her messages and interpret them to mean that she doesn’t want people to improve. But, she says, “You can want to be healthier, stronger, faster, and have more energy without focusing on your physical appearance and the numbers on the scale. I don’t weigh myself anymore. I just go to the gym and say, ‘Wow! I did more push-ups than I did yesterday!’ And that’s enough.”

Koroma captioned another recent post, “I saw a new stretch mark in the mirror yesterday and I winked at it. I’m just so happy in my skin these days — not to say I don’t still have bad days, but self-hate just has no business here anymore!” In the caption of the video above, Koroma says, “You better enjoy your summer body regardless! I’ll meet you at the beach!”

Kendall Jenner Put Her Abs On Display In Her Pilates Workout Look

On January 27, Kendall Jenner joined Hailey Bieber at a Pilates studio in West Hollywood. They arrived in masks per COVID-19 guidelines, Jenner in black leggings and Bieber in olive. Jenner was wearing a light grey hoodie and Bieber carried a small purse slung over her green zip-up jacket with a tall collar. Both wore shades as they entered the studio and shoes matching their respective outfits.

As they each exited their pilates class, their outerwear was off. Jenner’s toned abs were on display as she walked back to her car in a grey tank top, a large white bag on her arm and a water bottle in one hand.

Jenner and Bieber have been close friends for years. In a 2018 interview with Elle, Jenner said, “[Hailey] was actually best friends with Kylie, and I was good friends with her cousin Ireland [Baldwin]… Hailey lived in New York, and whenever we were there, we would hang out with her … From then on, she was my homie.”

She added, “At first, Kylie [Jenner] was mad; I had to bring them back together and be like, ‘No, it’s okay, guys.’ But it’s all good; that’s our love story.”

Hailey Bieber is married to Justin Bieber, and Jenner has been seen socializing with the couple. In October of 2021, they were spotted at a Los Angeles Lakers game at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where Jenner’s boyfriend Devin Booker was playing for the Phoenix Suns.

Meghan and Harry Break Silence on Spotify’s Misinformation Controversy

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have released a statement about the controversy surrounding Spotify, as the royal couple reportedly has a $25 million deal with the streaming service. Their partnership was announced in December 2020, and they revealed they would be hosting and producing “podcasts that build community through shared experience, narratives, and values.”

Spotify has been catching heat for allowing COVID misinformation on their platform, most notably on Joe Rogan’s very popular podcast. Rogan has repeatedly made false claims about the COVID-19 vaccine and welcomed anti-vaxx guests peddling damaging theories.

Last week, Neil Young removed his entire catalog from Spotify and on Saturday, musician Joni Mitchell followed suit. In a statement from their nonprofit Archewell, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex say they have spoken to Spotify about their concerns regarding the controversy. The statement in full reads:

“Since the inception of Archewell, we have worked to address the real-time global misinformation crisis. Hundreds of millions of people are affected by the serious harms of rampant mis- and disinformation every day. Last April, our co-founders began expressing concerns to our partners at Spotify about the all too real consequences of COVID-19 misinformation on its platform. We have continued to express our concerns to Spotify to ensure changes to its platform are made to help address this public health crisis. We look to Spotify to meet this moment and are committed to continuing our work together as it does.”

They did not explicitly mention Rogan’s The Joe Rogan Experience. Page Six reports that last April, it was announced that the couple were joining President Joe Biden at Vax Live, which encouraged a global vaccination effort with a concert broadcast from Los Angeles. On that same day, Rogan said on his podcast that young, healthy people do not need to bother to get the vaccine, though actual medical experts say otherwise and that everyone who is able to be vaccinated should do so.

Experts Explain How Oatmeal Can Help You Lose Weight

If you’re looking to lose weight, oatmeal is one of the best foods you can eat. Studies show that eating whole grains such as oats, which are packed with nutrients and complex carbs, can make you feel fuller for longer. Keep reading to learn why nutritionists say oatmeal is good for weight loss, and for some simple oatmeal recipes.

Why Oatmeal Is Good For Weight Loss

Oatmeal is a complex carb: Registered dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition said in a previous interview, “complex carbs break down slowly in the body because of their high-fiber content, and help to keep blood sugar levels steady since they are digested slower. They’re also richer in nutrients than simple carbohydrates.” Go for oat groats, steel-cut oats, or rolled oats since they’re less processed than quick oats.

Oatmeal is packed with fiber: A serving of oatmeal offers four grams of fiber, and it’s high in soluble fiber specifically, explained registered dietitian Adrienne Ngai, CDE, MSc. If you add fiber-rich berries, nuts, flaxmeal, and chia seeds, all that fiber in your bowl will help you stay fuller for longer, since it digests slower, which can help you lose weight. Ngai said the fiber in oats also helps manage your blood sugar levels, to prevent you from crashing after eating (and reaching for more food to give you energy after crashing).

Oatmeal has protein: A serving of oatmeal offers seven grams of protein. Getting enough protein helps you feel satisfied longer, registered dietitian Rachel Stahl, MS, RD, CDN, CDE, owner of Rachel Stahl Nutrition explained in a previous interview, which helps you eat less, and in turn, lose weight. Registered dietitian Nelcy Mylonas, RDN, CDN, said you can increase the protein in your oats by adding weight-loss ingredients like milk (if you’re plant-based, go for one that offers six or more grams of protein), yogurt, seeds, and nut butter. You can also mix in protein powder, greens like spinach, egg whites, or mashed beans.

Oatmeal is quick to prepare and can be eaten anytime of the day: Rolled oats take well under 10 minutes to cook, or you can make your oatmeal ahead of time with overnight oats, a batch of baked oatmeal, or by meal prepping a week’s worth of steel-cut oats and freezing portions. Oatmeal isn’t just for breakfast! Enjoy a small bowl with your salad at lunch, or a homemade oatmeal bar as a snack. Throw oats in your blender for a creamy afternoon smoothie, or make yourself a bowl of savory oats and enjoy oats for dinner. Or have satisfying oats for dessert with a square of these gluten-free blondies or these banana-sweetened sugar-free brownies.

Hunter Schafer and Dominic Fike Seen Out Hand-In-Hand Again

It’s been rumored that Euphoria co-stars Hunter Schafer and Dominic Fike have a behind-the-scenes romance going on, and those rumors have been fueled by some sightings around Hollywood where the pair were holding hands. Most recently, they were spotted leaving restaurant Craig’s, where the Daily Mail says they shared a romantic meal together.

Schafer was dressed all in black, with shorts over tights, a sweatshirt, and black leather jacket on top. They also wore a pair of mid-calf boots. Fike was wearing a black t-shirt and brown jacket, and a matching pair of boots with some simple jewelry. Both wore cloth face masks.

On Saturday, January 15, the pair were seen leaving a West Hollywood restaurant called Nice Guy, again holding hands. One fan said they saw Fike and Schafer “kissing and dancing” at the restaurant, which was attended by a number of other celebrities.

Fike’s character, Elliot, was introduced on the first episode of Euphoria‘s second season. He plays another teen who meets Zendaya’s character, Rue, on New Year’s Eve and the two become drug buddies together. It’s been hinted in a few early episodes that Elliot and Schafer’s character, Jules, might have some sort of romance ahead this season, so life imitates art.

In the past, Schafer was romantically linked to model Massima Dee, though their relationship was never confirmed. Fike has discussed dating social media personality Shelby Tangorra, and Booksmart‘s Diana Silvers. Fike described his relationship with Silvers to GQ.

“On our first date, we talked about Paul McCartney, and I hadn’t talked about Paul in so long or The Beatles,” he said. “It kind of manifested the Paul feature. I was trying to make stuff to impress her and work with people that she had heard of.”

When to Watch Figure-Skating Champ Nathan Chen at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing

Nathan Chen 2022 Olympics schedule

One of the biggest storylines heading into the 2022 Winter Olympics is figure skater Nathan Chen, who will be looking for a bit of redemption after finishing just off the podium in the Olympic men’s singles event in 2018. Over the past four years, Chen has been nearly unbeaten, winning six consecutive national titles and three back-to-back world championships. Without a doubt, Chen is one of the all-time greats in American figure skating, and now you can watch him take another shot at his Olympic dreams. Here’s what you need to know before tuning in to the figure-skating action.

When to Watch Nathan Chen at the 2022 Winter Olympics

Chen is eligible to be selected for one or both segments of the figure-skating team event as Team USA’s representative in men’s singles. As the reigning national champion and one of the top-ranked men in figure skating today, he’s almost certain to be chosen to skate either the short program or free skate. However, the rules of the team event allow each country to swap out skaters in two of the four disciplines after the first round of competition. Typically, countries with a deep bench will select two skaters (or pairs) from the team’s strongest disciplines in order to avoid exhausting the athletes with the best chance of winning individual medals. This is even more relevant for the men, for whom the individual event begins immediately after the team event.

Because Chen is an individual medal contender, it’s likely he will skate one but not both segments of the team event. The official rosters won’t be named until closer to the event, but keep an eye on both programs to avoid missing an opportunity to watch him skate.

  • Team event, men’s short program: Thursday, Feb. 3, at 8:55 p.m. ET
  • Team event, men’s free skate: Saturday, Feb. 5, at 10:50 p.m. ET

Of course, all eyes are on Chen for the men’s individual event as well, in which he’s a gold-medal favorite. All skaters will compete in the short program, then the top 24 will advance to the free skate.

  • Individual event, men’s short program: Monday, Feb. 7, at 8:15 p.m. ET
  • Individual event, men’s free skate: Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 8:30 p.m. ET

You’ll have a variety of options for watching the 2022 Olympics, including streaming on Peacock and other NBC platforms. Many of the figure-skating events are scheduled to take place during prime time in the US, so there’s a good chance American viewers will be able to watch the sport live on TV as well.

Everything We Know About Season 2 of And Just Like That…

The Sex and the City reboot series And Just Like That… has been quite an experience for fans and haters. The show seems to offer something to both groups, reuniting viewers with their favorite characters while introducing a number of controversial storylines. The original SATC paired the gals off with the men of their dreams, but this new iteration has blown that up, killing off Mr. Big, and having Miranda Hobbes betray her sweet husband Steve Brady with a torrid affair. (Charlotte and Harry seem to be going strong, though.)

Actress Kim Cattrall also notoriously declined to participate in the series and her character Samantha Jones has been banished to London. Cattrall’s refusal was controversial enough, but scenes featuring actor Chris Noth were removed as well when allegations of sexual misconduct came out from a number of different women. Noth has denied all the accusations.

As yet, there’s been no confirmation that the reboot will get a second season as the first one comes to a close. The 10-episode season is about to wrap up, but there have been a few hints from actors and producers that there might be 10 more. Eventually.

Could And Just Like That… be renewed?

A source recently told Page Six, “The creative conversations haven’t happened yet, but everyone is feeling good about the show.”

A second anonymous source claimed that even the criticism of the show has increased the chances another season will get made.

“They may feel that they want to prove a point that they can make a second season stronger and that it was valid to bring it back for fans,” they said.

HBO and HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys told Vulture at the end of 2021 that a season two was “certainly a conversation we’ll have—for sure. But we haven’t decided anything or done anything.”

He continued, “I’m going to leave it up to these guys to figure out what they want to do, but I’m very happy with what they’ve done. I will tell you, it’s kind of what you want in a show like this. It really does feel like you’re picking up with old friends and haven’t missed a beat.”

Actress Sarita Choudhury, who plays Carrie Bradshaw’s new real estate-selling friend, said in an interview that she has been thinking about a season 2 as well. Choudhury told Entertainment Tonight, “Just the other day, I was thinking, ‘I wonder.’ Because there’s a point where they let you know if there is or not and we’re not at that point yet. I was thinking, ‘God, I hope there is,’ And also, I was thinking, you know when you bring in new characters and you just start establishing and everyone’s getting used to all of us having grown up, Carrie’s grown up. I feel like the second [season] would be able to just jump into who they really are as opposed to getting the audience used to seeing what they’re seeing. So I would love a second season, but I really don’t know.”

That’s actually pretty convincing.

New to Yoga? Try Equinox’s Latest Yoga Class

Equinox Yoga Strong Class Review

I’ve been practicing yoga for 11 years now, six of which I’ve spent as a teacher. In my experience, people who are new to yoga have trouble stabilizing their muscles to find balance even when both of their feet are on the ground. Cueing a student to engage their core and them actually feeling that engagement can be worlds apart. But with practices that use props, like dumbbells, blocks, and Pilates balls, the added resistance can make finding that muscle engagement easier.

The Yoga Strong class at Equinox, which I was invited to take, uses a rectangular 10-pound sandbag (custom made for Equinox) with straps on either end and a seam down the middle that makes it foldable. Throughout the class, the sandbag is used to stabilize, strength train, and add pressure to parts of the body that carry tension, like how a weighted blanket helps you unwind. As we went through an Ashtanga-based sequence, I kept thinking that this class would be great for new practitioners to try. Yoga Strong isn’t fast-paced like a yoga sculpt or Vinyasa class; you get to spend more time in each posture, so you can adjust the sandbag as much as you need to to find what works for you.

What Happens During Equinox Yoga Strong Class

Before we started the class, our instructor, Kristina Erikson, reviewed the different ways that we’d hold the sandbag during class. Then we laid the sandbag over the tops of our feet and began in a delightfully grounding Mountain Pose. I felt evenly centered for the first time all day. After that moment of still bliss, it was time to awaken our stabilizing muscles.

We sat our hips back in Chair Pose while holding the sandbag like a tray in both hands moving it away and towards the chest. I had to fire up my abs, obliques, and back during this exercise so that I could stay still in my waist while my arms were moving. During Extended Side Angle (pictured below), we held the bag in one hand to do a shoulder press overhead that challenged the stability of my abs, wrists, and shoulders. The sandbag was used for several other postures throughout class, but those two moves brought the most heat and challenge, respectively.

Between the fiery exercises were moments where we got to slow down and let the weight rest over parts of our bodies. Placing the sandbag over my low back in Wide-Legged Forward Fold helped make sure that my hips were balanced and that I wasn’t leaning to one side, which would cause the sandbag to slip off. It was my favorite moment of the class. At the end, I was on my back in Savasana with the sandbag over my hips. I regularly place a sandbag over my hips in this pose as the pressure helps me feel calm and centered.

No matter if you’ve been practicing for a day or 20 years, practitioners of all levels can benefit from the stabilizing, strengthening, and grounding elements of this class. Yoga Strong is available at all Equinox locations, so you can check out class times on its website.

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson Grow Closer Over Kanye West Drama

Though Kanye West is very publicly dating Uncut Gems actress Julia Fox, he hasn’t lost his fixation on his ex, Kim Kardashian and her newfound relationship with comedian Pete Davidson. Sources speaking to Page Six say Kardashian and Davidson are “really happy,” and the Skims founder just wants the father of her four children to move on.

“Kim truly wants Kanye to be at peace with their marriage being over and find happiness, whether it’s with Julia [Fox] or someone else, so they can focus on raising their children together in a more positive way,” the insider explained. Kardashian hasn’t been making public comments about West’s behavior because she doesn’t want a fight between their parents to affect North, 8, Saint, 6, Chicago, 4, and Psalm, 2.

The source added, “She is worried about how all of these things that are being played out so publicly on Kanye’s end will affect their kids in the future and feels that any issues should be resolved privately.”

Another source said that West has been spreading unfounded rumors that Davidson is gay and has AIDs, which has even been making his friends and colleagues raise their eyebrows over his obsession. Last week, DJ Akademiks commented on Twitch that he’d heard of West’s alleged rumor-mongering.

“A n—a told me, this is real talk, Kanye has been telling anyone within an earshot of himself, he’s trying to spread a rumor that Pete Davidson has AIDS,” said the DJ. “I’m telling you this is a fact. I’ve heard this from eight people. He’s telling everybody! I’m telling you, this is a fact. Bruh, if you gotta spread a rumor that the n—a f–kin’ your wife got AIDS, you burnt out, bro. Wrap it up. It’s over.”

It’s also having the opposite effect of what West wants and the situation is “actually bringing Pete and Kim closer together,” according to the source.

Brie Larson’s Warmup Is a Workout in Its Own Right

Brie Larson has long been one of our fitness inspirations for the way she constantly and creatively challenges her body. The “Captain Marvel” star’s push-up variations, pull-up holds, and superhero ab workouts are not for the faint of heart. But even when she pushes her body to the extreme, Larson keeps her priorities straight: she’s always stressing the importance of warmup, recovery, and keeping her body healthy to avoid injury.

That’s why we were intrigued to watch Larson’s newest YouTube video, which is an explainer of how she “assesses” her body and fitness level before a workout. It doubles as a way to activate, warm up, and stretch her muscles, too. “Avoiding injury is everything, because you don’t get off course,” Larson says of her pre-workout routine. That means taking the time to warm up and cool down effectively: “If you can just take 5 minutes at the end of every workout to [stretch out], it can make a world of difference.”

So what goes into Larson’s assessment-slash-activation session? She starts with a modified yoga flow, beginning with a standing toe touch before crawling out into a plank position. From there, she flows into Upward-Facing Dog and Downward-Facing Dog positions, then stretches out her hips with a Half-Pigeon and Runner’s Lunge on each leg. Larson continued through the rest of the warmup with bodyweight strength moves, like:

Larson uses this as a way to assess her fitness and activate her muscles before a workout, so it can definitely serve as a warmup before your fitness routine. The stretches can also double as a cooldown.

Just before signing off, Larson took a moment to explain why workouts are so important to her, and why she dedicates this time to herself and taking care of her body. “There’s a lot going on in the world, a lot of things to care about. A lot of things to love, people to love, initiatives to love,” she explained. “But I’ve found that when I take a little bit of time for myself and when I get grounded in my body, I’m better at all of those things. I meet every moment better.”

Check out Larson’s full routine above.

Prince William Reveals George, Charlotte, and Louis Are Video Game Fans

The Cambridge children may have grown up in royal palaces and grand countryside estates, but at heart, they’re just like any other kids.

During a visit to the reopening of BAFTA’s renovated headquarters in central London, Prince William shared that Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and even Prince Louis have gotten into video games.

“They do definitely like gaming, they’re fascinated by that,” the Duke of Cambridge admitted during the January 27 visit. “George particularly, he’s more interested in it. The other two are a bit too small, but they love the films.”

The royal dad said both he and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, now have to closely watch how much time the trio spend in front of screens. “At the moment, it’s trying to regulate the gaming … monitoring screen time. Got to be careful of that,” he said.

William—who is president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts—was at the refurbished 195 Piccadilly building to learn how the independent charity’s new facilities will help provide increased support to young people building careers in film, games, and television industries.

“All that is creative,” he told BAFTA Young Game Designer finalist and Young Game Designer Mentor winner Harry Petch of his children’s passions. “I adore film and gaming as well, I’m trying to get the next generation interested in it.”

During his visit, William also learned about the newly launched BAFTA Elevate scheme, which supports talent from underrepresented groups in progressing their careers and helps tackle the issue of diversity in our industries as a whole.

“I am hugely proud of BAFTA’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that young talent from all walks of life are given every possible opportunity to build and develop successful careers in the film, games and television industries,” William said in a statement. “The redevelopment of 195 Piccadilly has created fantastic new learning spaces to ensure that future generations can receive the support they need to thrive.”

Royal engagements have quickly become the go-to place for learning about the achievements and milestones of the Cambridges’ children: Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3.

During their 2020 tour of Ireland, Kate revealed that Charlotte is a huge gymnastics fan. “She’s doing cartwheels, handstands, everything,” the duchess said. “It’s so good for their basic skills of balance and coordination.”

On the same tour, Kate added that George—who the proud parents also once shared takes ballet classes—has a keen interest in music and is learning to play the guitar. And in photos shared by Kensington Palace on Louis’s first day of nursery last year, the toddler could be seen proudly riding a shiny new balance bike to class.

This Canadian Designer Has Created the Ultimate Après Ski Sweater

Photography courtesy of GOGO Sweaters

South van der Lee hopes shoppers feel like they’re being hugged while wearing a GOGO sweater.

“I want shoppers to get asked where they got their sweaters,” writes South van der Lee, president and designer of GOGO, over email. “But I also hope they feel like they are getting a big hug.”

Such is the ethos behind the Calgary-based brand that has become a social media darling. Known for pairing millennial-esque colours and graphics with luxury wool and hand-crafted designs, the Canadian label was first launched in the late seventies by van der Lee’s mother in Alberta. In 2010, South took over and temporarily moved the operation to Toronto.

“TO was very welcoming to new designers,” she shares. “I was, however, raised in the mountains and love to ski, so it was difficult not having access to the Rocky Mountains. I decided to move back out West after six years. Now I can hike and ski all the time, and the mountains are the foundation of the GOGO brand. That’s where my inspiration comes from.”

Below, FASHION spoke to van der Lee about her love for Western Canada, cozy knitwear’s eternal appeal, and why winter should be everyone’s favourite season.

How would you describe the style of your brand in three words?

Cozy. Impactful. Heirloom.

What do you think is the eternal appeal of handmade knitwear?

I think it’s the idea that someone spent hours making it. You can see the work and the time put into a hand-knit sweater, which translates to quality and value.

What’s one GOGO sweater that is especially meaningful to you?

The ‘No Waste’ sweater is a new piece I came up with that uses end pieces of wool balls too small to make an entire sweater, but when joined with 100s of other ends, it can make up a stunning, one-of-a-kind piece. I couldn’t bear the thought of throwing out these beautiful ends, so I decided to make a sweater one day from them and wow! What a revelation!

What’s your favourite piece from your new collection?

I love the ‘Western Skies Jacket’ coming out for FW 22/23. Each season we add new representations of GOGO’s Western Canadian roots, and this one is just fabulous. Such a wearable statement piece.

What would you say makes your sweaters so unique?

I would say our colours, graphics and fit. It’s quite a process choosing the colours for GOGO, and we change them up each season, so each hue represents a moment in time. Also, the slogans and graphics are unique. I came out with the phrase “snow babe” right before I left for Toronto in 2010. I want GOGO to be a leader in the industry. I NEVER want to follow.

How does your brand approach sustainability?

Thanks to my mother, GOGO has been sustainable before sustainability was a thing. Our sweaters are made right here in Canada and provide jobs to people in Canada. GOGO is made with mostly wool that lasts for decades. We want people to buy our pieces knowing they will be special for years to come.

How would you describe Calgary’s style?

Calgary is known for people who, like me, want access to a city and the mountains. I would say the style of the city is hardcore, as in sporty snow gear from brands like Arc’teryx and Canada Goose. However, I break this mould wearing floral ski pants and pink puffers at the hill! I want to be core and cute.

What is your favourite season, based solely on wardrobe?

Winter obviously! I love layering, sweaters, hats and skiwear.

What is the most-worn item in your closet?

My Denim Forum high-waisted jeans and 3.1 Phillip Lim Alexa boots. I live in them.

What are five items that are bringing you joy right now?

Nia Dennis Is Forging a New Path Beyond Gymnastics

Los Angeles, CA - February 10: UCLA Bruins gymnasts Nia Dennis competes in the floor exercise against BYU during a gymnastics meet in Pauley Pavilion on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles on Wednesday, February 10, 2021. (Photo by Keith Birmingham/MediaNews Group/Pasadena Star-News via Getty Images)

When Nia Dennis graduated from UCLA last spring, she knew she still had some gymnastics opportunities ahead of her, namely the Gold Over America Tour with a rockstar roster of world-class gymnasts, many of whom she grew up competing against. There was also an electric, flip-filled appearance on the 2021 Met Gala steps (no big deal). But she’s looking to branch out and discover what it means to be “NiaNation” beyond her sport.

While she says a career in the gymnastics realm is always a great plan to fall back on — she still coaches summer camps — Dennis told POPSUGAR in early January, “I definitely want to see what else I can bring to the table, and I think that this year is a year for me to explore.” She has a degree in sociology, which she won’t put to use just yet. For now, she’s pursuing opportunities in the entertainment space like modeling, dancing, and stunt doubling. A handful of UCLA gymnasts who came before her are stunt doubles (Sadiqua Bynum, Natalie Padilla, and Kiralee Hayashi, for instance), and she notes she’d love to do stunts for a franchise such as the Marvel superhero films.

Dennis tumbled in a Dick’s Sporting Goods commercial post graduation and most recently partnered with Pressed and Nair. She couldn’t reveal specifics about upcoming opportunities, though she did note that one deal she has in the works goes along with her mission of authenticity and empowering young women and girls.

Dennis says she was encouraged to find her authentic self during her four years at UCLA (2018-2021) thanks to former Bruins head coach Valorie Kondos Field (“Miss Val”). Dennis learned to love herself and her sport again after she missed the Rio Olympics — a dream of hers she strived toward for 17 years — due to a torn achilles. It was one of the darkest points of her career, and Miss Val helped her reclaim the joy she once had in the sport.

“Growing up, I struggled with identity and wanting to change the color of my skin and wanting to fit in with my environment and wanting to fit in with people around me,” Dennis says, recalling times when her childhood teammates would make fun of her hair texture or the fact that the chalk they’d use on bars and other events would show up “brighter” on her skin. Kondos Field, she says, would celebrate the athletes’ differences “as opposed to what I was used to, which was criticizing our differences and bullying and making fun of people’s differences.”

Kondos Field retired in 2019, and Chris Waller was promoted from associate head coach to fill her role. Waller and UCLA leadership are currently coming under fire due to reported failure to address racist incidents within the team. A freshman allegedly used racial slurs and made inappropriate comments in front of teammates, which some members of the team felt coaches, Waller included, did not handle appropriately. The gymnast has since transferred to LSU.

Dennis said in a followup call when news began surfacing online that she doesn’t feel comfortable speaking on the matter. However, the sense of self she garnered as a collegiate gymnast — the unmatched personality and pride she displayed in her wildly-viral floor performances — continues to drive her forward. “Once you are authentically you, it’s really hard to go back,” she says.

Dennis was among a class of athletes eligible for an extra year due to COVID-19, but she had already planned to close that NCAA chapter. While it was a tough decision to make, she had her mind set. “I definitely do feel like it is time to move on and find my other passions and find a what else is fulfilling to me,” she says.

Having recently moved to a new apartment, Dennis is getting settled into the “real world.” She notes, “My whole life has been a routine, and it’s been spelled out for me.” Now she’ll forge a different path all her own.

Sarita Choudhury Thinks It Would Be ‘Very Fun to Watch’ Seema and Samantha Interact

No one makes Seema Patel wait in line. Not for the club, and not even for her COVID vaccine. (She got hers “before the president.”) So this week’s And Just Like That… episode finds the stylish and powerful real estate agent in an unlikely place: on a queue with her friend Carrie Bradshaw, denied entry from an NYC hotspot. And it’s her 54th birthday.

Sarita Choudhury, who plays Seema in HBO Max’s Sex and the City revival, also had a way of avoiding lines when she was clubbing in her twenties. “You always had your hookups, so you actually never waited anyway,” she recalls on the phone from chilly New York. “But you had no money.” Obviously, the women of AJLT don’t have to worry about that.

Though Seema and Carrie end up ditching the dancefloor for some dessert, the episode continues to find Seema in more surprising situations: in Brooklyn (for a charity event) and in a flirtatious back-and-forth with a handsome club owner who, in the end, finally lets her skip the line at his place of employ. Of all the leads, old and new, in And Just Like That…, Seema is the only one that’s proudly partnerless; in some ways she’s a refreshing, shameless representation of single women over 50 on screen. She’s even been compared to Samantha (which she’s “enjoying,” though filling that role is not her intention). But where could her story go next now that she’s struck up a new romance?

Despite its efforts to be a more inclusive show, AJLT has garnered backlash for a number of reasons, aspects of Seema’s arc, like an arranged marriage plot and mistaking a lehenga for a sari. Choudhury does her best to avoid the criticism, though sometimes she can’t resist clicking a harsh headline. “With a show like this, of course that’s gonna happen,” she admits. “There’s no way there’s not gonna be 12 million different opinions. There’s no way.”

Choudhury wouldn’t quite say that her life has completely turned upside down since she joined AJLT, “but there’s a semi, I would say minuscule, version of that for sure,” she explains. Despite adjusting to a new level of attention, Choudhury remains a veteran in her craft. She first made her film debut in Mira Nair’s 1991 romance Mississippi Masala (opposite Denzel Washington) and has gathered dozens of TV and film roles in the decades since. She’s especially shown off her range in the past year, playing a mysterious mother to Dev Patel’s Gawain in The Green Knight and a curious museum curator in After Yang, in addition to becoming a new SATC fan favorite.

Here, Choudhury walks ELLE.com through Seema’s new fling, the importance of showing her Indian family on screen, and what her first encounter with Samantha would look like.

How would you describe Seema and Carrie’s dynamic?

I feel like [Seema] speaks so unapologetically and you don’t quite know what’s gonna come out of her mouth, and I love the fact that Carrie is game to sit there and make sure my birthday is good, even though I say it’s not important. I almost feel like they bring out the nurturing side of each other. But they also let each other be kind of weirdly independent. It’s a nice friendship in that sense.

When they’re having dinner together, as Seema is looking back on the past year, she says that “instead of meeting my guy, I met an amazing new friend.” I wanted to know how you felt about that line and her storyline, which empowers single women and friendships.

I feel like when Seema says something, she means it. So when I saw that line, I was like, “Oh, first she chose Carrie to go out with on her birthday, not anyone else, so already you sense that that is a real friendship.” But I was happy she said it because I feel like Seema, she doesn’t mince words. So if she says it, she’s not saying, “I have to be your best friend.” She’s just saying, “You’re definitely mine. You’re my new friend, you’re who I care about.” And I find that oddly refreshing, ‘cause sometimes with characters, there’s a neediness that comes out when people say something— they want something back. And I feel with Seema, she doesn’t really want anything back ever.

She’s single, she’s not a victim about that. And she also dates a lot. I think there’s this idea of women that, whether any of it’s true or not, it’s kind of given to us that if you are single, that maybe you’re not happy. Or that you can’t get a man. Meantime, she’s single, she can get a man, and she’s lying to her parents about having a man. It’s just so refreshing because I have many friends like that. And in humor they may joke, “Oh my God, I can’t believe I’m single,” but they’re not usually victims. You’ll have the odd friend who’ll have a cry about a breakup. So I do think it’s a great thing to put out there.

“She’s single, she’s not a victim about that.”

What did you think of that twist at the end? I don’t know how long-term this is, but she does find a guy.

[Laughs] You know, it’s interesting ‘cause when I read it in the script, I was like, “Oh, here we go.” What I like about that [encounter] is she doesn’t give him the time of day and it’s only because he can handle it. I may be wrong, but I felt like because he could handle the way she was bantering with him and he could give it back, it made her kind of go, “Ohhh, okay.” And you never know with Seema because—let’s see what happens and how they actually get along—but I love that it began with a dissonance. It’s like, “Oh, you can spar with me?”

Speaking of her dating life, she’s big on dating apps. Is that anything you’ve ever tried or wanted to try?

I’m literally the opposite, I’ve never [laughs]. Do you know the friends who are just unapologetic about it or have said, “I found the love of my life” and you’re like, “Oh my God, where? Where did you meet him?” and they’re like, “Online”? I love people like that because they do it and they actually do find amazing moments, or sometimes love. But then there’s the other group that is shy about admitting to it, or they have a lot of depressing moments through it. When you hear both sides, I think it’s so scary, the whole thing. And also, I didn’t grow up with a phone. So to start doing that now, I would laugh at myself.

So you’re more of a meet-in-person type of dater.

And also, I feel lucky…When you’re in film, you meet over a hundred people every day. I’m sure if I had a job where I was entering a cubicle and especially during [COVID], you know, I get it.

You mentioned how Seema was lying to her parents about having a man. What did you make of her family criticizing her for not being married or pressuring her into being married?

Well, first of all, if you’re an Indian daughter, which I am, that would be the narrative. Like, you’re not supposed to have boyfriends when you’re not married, and then you’re supposed to be married. So it’s almost like, when does that change and why am I always lying about one or the other? You know what I mean? When you’re not allowed a boyfriend, that’s when you lie about having one, you say you don’t [have one]. And then suddenly you’re supposed to be married. So the narrative, I related to it completely, but again, what I love is Seema’s just like, “Yeah, I had to lie—for them more than for me, or for them and for me.”

I don’t know if you’ve watched Sex Lives of College Girls, which is also on HBO Max…

I want to. Is that Mindy [Kaling]’s show?

Yeah. I was interviewing Amrit Kaur, who stars in the series and is also Indian. And she was talking about how important it is to see Brown women on screen being open about their sexuality, rather than being reserved or fetishized or nerdy, but actually owning their desire and their sexual exploits, whatever they may be. Do you think that applies to Seema as well? Was that important for you to portray?

I think it does, definitely, but I think also that’s why showing the family was important. On one hand, she is being free in her life, but also, I wanted to address that when you do have an Indian family, you can’t push their freedom too much in their house or their faith because there’s also the honor and respect [component]. And I feel like I’ve always grown up with a complete mixture of that, of knowing that I can get my independence, but it’s not ‘cause I have to cover it from my parents. There’s a certain honor and respect that we carry with us and it’s almost our comfort in ourselves or our gauging of what’s moral or…So, I think when you’re young, it’s a fight between those two things, but, as you get older, it’s less of a fight and I think that’s where Seema is now. She’s like, “It is what it is. I’m gonna do both.”

sarita choudhury

Choudhury on And Just Like That..., in episode 6.

HBO

Definitely. You joined the cast with Karen Pittman, Nicole Ari Parker, and Sara Ramirez. You’re all actors of color, joining a show that’s centered on white women and their stories. What was that like for you as an actor? Did you feel like there was any responsibility or pressure?

I thought it was a really bold move on the show’s part to do that. It’s not like they were just like, “Oh, let’s do it slowly.” It was like four of us entering, and I was like, wow. I remember thinking that I couldn’t wait to go to the read-throughs every week to hear everyone’s storyline developed because I was curious, like, how do you do that with the show? And what moved me was that every time each of those characters spoke, I was like, oh, she has a husband; and she has fertility problems; and she’s completely into fashion, [is] rich, and lives this life that I’m not used to seeing. And then Sara coming into full gender politics and non-binary [identity], and I was just like, wow.

And I started to really enjoy it, listening to where everyone was going. And for me, I don’t know why, but I never see things as a pressure for me because when you do a series, it’s the writers, the directors, the editors, there’s so many people involved, and sometimes it doesn’t work out, sometimes it does, and I always feel like I can only do what I do. I’m not there to portray an Indian woman only, I’m there to try and be a good enough actress and show some kind of nuance, if I can. And that’s what I get obsessed with as opposed to the onus on my shoulder, because I’m never gonna be able to do that.

“I’m not there to portray an Indian woman only, I’m there to try and be a good enough actress and show some kind of nuance, if I can.”

And you’re watching along every week, right? As each episode drops?

I am! [Laughs] It’s so funny.

Do you follow along with the memes, tweets, and reactions too?

No, because I’ve learned—again, luckily, because I came late to social media and everything. I know from the way I am; I think we all are vulnerable to that.

[When] I was in my first film, I remember I learned my lesson. I read reviews and I remember they were all great. And then there was one that wasn’t. And that’s the only one I remembered. I can’t remember the others and, you know, it hurts you. And so I think it was by the time I grew up understanding that, when social media came along, I was like, “Oh no, no, I’m not gonna [read them], I’m not the one who’s good at that.” So I tend not to.

I was talking to Michael Patrick King [the AJLT showrunner] about the show and the reactions. And we were both saying what is amazing is how much talk there is. Like, every time I open my phone, there’s something about the show. And whether it’s good one day or bad the next day or whatever it is, you’re like, “Thank God it’s so alive at this point.” Because imagine if there was no talk; that would also be a problem.

So if you come across the backlash, is that the mentality you’re bringing to it? At least people are talking about it?

Partly. I mean, literally, I see the headline and if it’s not that nice, I’m like, “Okay, well, at least we’re the subject of this week,” but part of my brain does that, and the other part is like, “Do not open it, Sarita, do not open it.” Because you know what else I learned? An odd thing. Sometimes when I did look at a few, I was like, “Oh, the ones with the harshest titles are actually not that mean and some of the ones with the nicer titles then get mean later.” So I thought, Aha, very tricky here.

HBO

Obviously we don’t know right now, but if we get a renewal, what would you like to see from Seema in a second season?

Oh my goodness. I think maybe I’d like to see where she lives and who comes over to hang out with her, and how they are when they meet Carrie and how Carrie is in that world. I definitely [want to] see what she is like beyond a second date. Like domestic Seema, that would be very comedic to me.

She’s such a real estate pro, I’m sure her apartment will be amazing. What do you imagine her home looks like?

Well, I think either it is amazing or…You know when you do so much work for other people’s taste and help them, you’re almost harder on yourself? And so you end up not doing it until you find, [for example,] the perfect statue that she fell in love with in Rome, but they wouldn’t let her have it ‘cause it’s part of a museum. I feel like her house wouldn’t be finished, in a weird way.

I can see that. I know you’ve addressed this before, but Seema is getting a lot of comparisons to Samantha, especially when she sat in with the trio in a recent episode. Would you want to see Samantha in a future episode? How do you think they would interact?

Oh my God. I’ve never thought of that. Wow. Let me think for a second.

First, I think it would be so much fun to watch. And I think they would eye each other quite a bit in the non-moments. In a way, they’re not similar at all…I can feel the difference between them, but I don’t really know how to articulate it. They do obviously have things in common and I think what would be so fun is—you know when two animals meet and they check each other out? It’s kind of that. And it could end up being very comedic or quite tender, in a weird way. And also I think, for the most part, I’ve had most of my scenes with Carrie and I don’t know why, but I’m so protective of her. And so if I did meet Samantha, it would probably be in a moment of hanging out with Carrie. I can imagine that.
