Oprah, Please Do A Sit Down With Britney Spears

Photography by Paul Morigi/Getty Images

It’s what she deserves!

Rejoice, Britney Spears is finally free!

The pop icon was officially released from her 13-year conservatorship on November 12, and she’s wasted no time planning her next chapter. For now, that means relishing her reinstated independence by driving her car, having access to cash and buying candles (who doesn’t love a candle?). To add even more excitement, a Britney Spears tell-all may be in the works with the Celebrity Interview Queen herself, Oprah Winfrey.

To celebrate her freedom from the conservatorship that has long controlled her personal life, career and finances, Spears shared a video on November 16 answering questions from fans. She captioned the Twitter post, “I might as well do a hint of my thoughts here before I go and set things square on Oprah.”

Though an interview has not officially been confirmed by either party, we’ll take this tweet to mean the sit-down is a possibility. Colour us intrigued!

“I’ve been in the conservatorship for 13 years,” she said in the video, before taking a prolonged pause. “It’s a really long time to be in a situation you don’t want to be in. I’m just grateful honestly for each day: being able to have the keys to my car, being able to be independent and feel like a woman, owning an ATM card, seeing cash for the first time, being able to buy candles.”

But Spears told fans she doesn’t want to be seen as a victim, adding: “I’ve lived with victims my whole life as a child, that’s why I got out of my house and worked for 20 years.” Instead, she wants to be an advocate for people with disabilities and illnesses stuck in predatory conservatorships. “I’m a very strong woman, so I can only imagine what the system has done to those people,” she said.

When battling her conservatorship this past summer, Spears spoke out in court about how she was forced to undergo psychiatric evaluations and take medication that affected her cognitive function, as per the BBC. Spears’s mental health struggles were used as leverage for years to keep her conservatorship in place, namely by her father and conservator Jamie Spears. In her recent video statement, the singer said she hopes that her story can “make some changes in the corrupt system.”

After a judge ruled to terminate the conservatorship, Spears’s lawyer Mathew Rosengart spoke out about the news, saying, “What’s next for Britney — and this is the first time that this could be said for about a decade — is up to one person: Britney.” He added that she now has a personal and financial support system to fall back on.

As for whether Britney Spears will actually open up to Oprah, one thing’s for sure: It’s the platform Spears deserves.

Over the past year, Oprah has set the trend for hosting viral sit-down interviews with celebs who’ve made headlines (Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Elliot Page and, most recently, Adele).

These conversations have seen high profile guests tell their own stories and clear up misconceptions. And so an Oprah-led conversation with the Princess of Pop would be enlightening, to state the obvious.

Until then, we’ll continue to appreciate the carefree, wholesome social media content Spears has been giving us since her freedom was granted. Over the past few days, she’s been very active on Instagram: posting selfie photo dumps, friendship memes and random photos of wet lipstick — mainly, doing whatever she pleases, because she can. If that involves an Oprah interview sometime in the future, we won’t complain.

Everybody Is Different, but Here’s About How Long It Generally Takes to Lose 10 Pounds

Group of smiling women wearing colorful sports clothing dancing in gym.

Losing 10 pounds is a solid feat: whether you have 15 or 50 pounds to lose, getting started on your weight-loss journey and shedding that first 10 can be the hardest. And while many people would like to lose those 10 pounds as quickly as possible, crash diets and deprivation aren’t effective or healthy long-term strategies.

In order to lose weight and keep it off, it’s best to do it in a slow and steady manner. Still, you can lose 10 pounds in a matter of weeks and be well on your way to achieving your weight-loss goals. We spoke to registered dietitian and ACSM-certified personal trainer Jim White, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, who explained what you can realistically expect if you’re trying to lose 10 pounds.

How Long Does It Take to Lose 10 Pounds?

White said a healthy weight loss is considered safe at a rate of one to two pounds a week. If you have 100 pounds or more to lose, the initial weight may come off at a quicker rate. More realistically, most people can expect to lose about half a pound to two pounds a week. Any more than that and you are at risk of losing lean muscle mass as well as fat, which can wreak havoc on your metabolism.

With that in mind, a weight loss of 10 pounds could take as little as five weeks or as much as 20 weeks (about five months). One factor could be your metabolism, or the number of calories your body burns in a unit of time. Everybody is different; some may lose 10 pounds in five weeks, no problem, while others may ebb and flow their way to a 10-pound weight loss over the course of a few months. It’s important to remember that other lifestyle factors like sleep and stress also play a role.

How to Lose 10 Pounds

OK, so you know how long it will take you to lose the 10 pounds, but how exactly do you achieve it? Ultimately, White said losing weight is about burning more calories than you take in. You can do this by eating in a healthy calorie deficit; burning calories (think: workouts); or a combination of both, which is the method he recommends. As for how many calories to eat in a day, that all depends.

“Calorie needs are highly individualized and vary from person to person based on factors such as current weight, height, and activity level,” White said. “It would be impossible to suggest one calorie goal that would meet everyone’s needs.” If you can, speak with a registered dietitian who can help create a healthy meal plan for you and assess your goals. If not, you can use this formula to figure out about how many calories you need to eat in a day to lose weight.

A calorie deficit of 500 calories a day will lead to a weight loss of about a pound a week. Just make sure you are still hitting your nutritional needs and, if you are a woman, you don’t go below 1,200 calories a day; doing so will start to slow down your metabolism, not to mention deprive you of essential vitamins and nutrients. And before you embark on any weight-loss or fitness journey, consult with your doctor.

Mendes has been open about what the two’s private dynamic is like in interviews. He spoke in August about how he and Cabello did fight regularly but overall have a “really honest and open relationship.”

“We definitely fight, and we get in like the worst little arguments, but like, I think that we definitely are pretty good at picking up on when it’s just ego talking,” Mendes told SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up. “And we usually like, call each other out. It’s we have a really honest and open relationship, but, but yeah, no, we definitely fight. I think like, especially like, I think the longer the relationship goes, it’s like the easier it seems to be to fight. So, yeah, it’s definitely not that holding hands all the time, but we’re really good with each other. It never gets bad. It’s always like a little fight.”

The Victoria’s Secret Comeback Story Now Includes Naomi Osaka

Photo by Kevin Mazur/MG21/Getty Images For The Met Museum/Vogue

But some aren’t buying the pivot from male fantasy to female empowerment.

Tennis champion Naomi Osaka is Victoria Secret’s newest VS Collective member.

The lingerie retailer shared the news on Instagram November 17, writing that the 24-year-old athlete “will join an ever-growing group of trailblazing partners who share a common passion to drive positive change.”

In June 2021, Victoria Secret launched its VS Collective, an initiative made up of figureheads to “influence and shape the future” of the brand.

Osaka joins the ranks of other high-profile celebs, including Hailey Bieber, Priyanka Chopra, Eileen Gu, Megan Rapinoe, Paloma Elsesser and Valentina Sampaio.

In an interview with WWD, Osaka said she was inspired to get involved after learning about the vision for the VS Collective.

“I remember going into [Victoria’s Secret] stores when I was a kid and wondering why none of the women on the wall looked like me,” she said. “Now, as a collective, we can inspire the next generation from all different backgrounds, cultures and sizes. That represents such progress to me.”

Known for her advocacy of social issues including racial justice and mental health, Naomi Osaka was a “natural choice,” said Janie Schaffer, chief design officer of Victoria’s Secret, per WWD.

The VS Collective represents the company’s drastic rebrand to be more inclusive. Since its inception in 1977, Victoria’s Secret was made to be a “store where men could feel comfortable shopping for lingerie,” The New York Times reports. And up until very recently, its brand imagery and messaging catered to the male gaze above all else.

Along with the lack of diversity in models and sizing options, Victoria’s Secret has been the subject of several controversies over the years. A 2020 investigation by The New York Times found that the company fostered a misogynistic culture of sexism, sizeism and ageism. On top of that, the brand’s former owner, Les Wexner, was found to have had close ties with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Victoria’s Secret’s popularity inevitably dropped in recent years, with shoppers opting for retailers that promoted a more inclusive image of beauty. In June 2021, the company announced an extreme rebrand, doing away with its universally recognized symbol: Victoria’s Secret Angels.

Angels were thin, tall models who would walk Victoria’s Secret runway shows bearing bedazzled feathery wings and sky-high stilettos. What came in place of the angels was the VS Collective, made up of women the brand deems as advocates.

Members of the collective advise the company, appear in ads and promote the brand on Instagram, as reported by The New York Times. According to Martin Waters, CEO of Victoria’s Secret, the company’s newfound mission “is to be the world’s leading advocate for women.”

It’s still unclear whether they’ll be able to fulfill that ambitious goal. Victoria’s Secret’s sharp pivot from male fantasy to female empowerment could be seen as disingenuous. “This Victoria’s Secret rebrand is so annoying,” said fashion writer Hannah Tindle on Twitter. “It could have easily changed itself from what it was to be more in line with the values of 2021 without pretending to be some kind of worthy ‘feminist collective.’”

By swapping rigid body standards for self-proclaimed female empowerment, the brand is undoubtedly aiming to appeal to shoppers who value social issues. The question remains whether consumers will buy the change in ethos.

Osaka, however, holds optimism for the collaboration. “I wouldn’t have thought this was possible as a child and I’m so glad there’s more representation in the world now,” she wrote on Instagram. “Can’t wait to share/show you guys how I’ll be partnering with [Victoria’s Secret].”

Dwyane Wade, Please Challenge Colbert to a Rematch of Wastepaper Basketball

It turns out that after years of tossing a crumpled up piece of paper into the trash and shouting “Kobe!” we might have to start saying “Stephen!” after all. On Tuesday night, three-time NBA champion Dwyane Wade stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to discuss his new self-titled memoir Dwyane and engage in a friendly game of wastepaper basketball. Colbert, who has quite the résumé of wastepaper basketball championships under his belt, boasted past victories against Barack Obama, Allen Iverson, and Julius Erving, before taking on the former Miami Heat guard in a crumpled-paper shoot-out.

Things got pretty intense, and Wade even tried to dunk at the end! Hilariously enough, comments on the video are noting that years of being a writer has made Colbert garner “magical skills” in the wastepaper basketball department. He remains undefeated! Watch the video above (around the 6:50 mark), and check out the baller’s intimate new photo memoir, Dwyane, available now.

Everything We Know About Ozark’s Fourth and Final Season

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Ozark season 3.

Some sad news: The Byrde family’s time in the Missouri Ozarks—and on Netflix—is coming to an end. But first, Ozark will return to the streaming service to end the saga properly in its fourth and final season.

Since the beginning of Ozark, Marty and Wendy have tried their best to keep their family and business lives separate, and season 3 found them in their most difficult situation yet when Wendy’s little brother Ben comes to town. Loyalties were tested, sides were switched (how could you, Ruth?!), and loved ones passed, culminating in an ending no one saw coming: Navarro (Marty’s very impatient employer and head honcho of the cartel) chose the Byrdes over Helen. So where does this leave Marty, Wendy, Charl0tte, and Jonah? Ahead, everything we know about the fourth and final season of Ozark.

When will Ozark season 4 premiere?

Part 1 of Ozark season 4 premieres on January 21, 2022 with seven episodes. Part 2, featuring another seven episodes, will arrive at a later date, to be announced.

Back in June, Netflix announced the final season of Ozark would adopt a new format, clocking in at 14 episodes total, but broken into two halves.

“A super sized season means super sized problems for the Byrdes. I’m excited to end with a bang(s),” Jason Bateman, who plays protagonist Marty Byrde, said in a statement.

Bateman, who serves as an executive producer on the show and has directed several episodes, told Indie Wire that he likely won’t return to the director’s chair for the final season to keep the set and the workers safe.

“As normal, I was going to do the first two episodes, but as we were looking through the protocols, the guidelines, all the complications with COVID, [and] the producer side of me made me think it’s just not responsible to have one of the actors direct the first two, given that we’re still going to be getting our perimeter safe,” Bateman said. “Because if one of the actors gets sick, we all have to go home for weeks. If one of the crew members gets sick — while I’m making sure their salary is protected while they’re in quarantine — we can hire a replacement. So it just didn’t seem smart for me to [direct] the first two [episodes].”

Is there a trailer yet?

Netflix released the first teaser of Ozark season 4, part 1, on October 19. “Money is, at its essence, the measure of a man’s choices,” Bateman narrates. “Today is a new beginning,” he adds.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

On November 17, Netflix released a second teaser with the accompanying tagline, “No ending is reached by accident.”

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

What characters will return to season 4?

Judging from the shocking season 3 finale, we know for sure that Helen (Janet McTeer) is out of the picture for good. But will her daughter, Erin (played by Madison Thompson) who befriended Charlotte, return to avenge her mother’s death and blow up the Byrde’s cover?

Season 3 also saw Ruth (Julia Garner) join her cousin Wyatt Lang over on the Snell’s side following a dispute with the Byrdes, so it’s safe to say Ruth, Wyatt, and Darlene Snell might have some unfinished business with Marty and Wendy.

Netflix has confirmed that the season 4 cast includes Bateman, Emmy Award® Winner Laura Linney, Garner, Sofia Hublitz, Skylar Gaertner, Charlie Tahan, Jessica Frances Dukes, Lisa Emery, Felix Solis, Damian Young, Alfonso Herrera, Adam Rothenberg, John Bedford Lloyd, Joseph Sikora, Bruno Bichir, CC Castillo, Katrina Lenk, Bruce Davison, Ali Stroker and Veronica Falcón.

With Helen gone for good, what happens to Marty and Wendy?

Helen, who served as the middleman between the Byrdes and Navarro, was shot dead in the final moments of the season three finale. Will Marty and Wendy take over Helen’s duties for the Navarro cartel? In an interview with EW, Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy explained that the Byrdes are much more valuable to Navarro than Helen.

As good as Helen is, there’s other lawyers in the world. But Wendy and Marty have now pulled off two impossibilities for him,” Mundy explained. “One is getting a casino to launder through in the first place, which is sort of the holy grail of money laundering. And the second is that, at least in Navarro’s mind, their claim that they have the FBI on their side and can swing the power of the U.S. government in the intervention in the drug war against their rivals, that’s something virtually no one else can do, and that essentially tipped the scales for Marty and Wendy.

I’m Streamlining My Skincare With Lancôme’s Rénergie Line

There are certain universal truths in life. Everything is impermanent, everything is connected, and in my case specifically, my mother is usually right. This is especially true when it comes to skincare—she put me onto a routine when I started breaking out in my early teens.

And as I’ve started to become more concerned with preventative anti-aging (while noticing even more that her skin is really, really good), I’ve been looking to mom’s vanity for inspiration. Lancôme has been a staple in her lineup for decades, and the Rénergie range— infused with key ingredients like linseed extract which claims to impart a lifting and firming effect—seemed especially promising.

I started using the Lancôme Rénergie Lift Multi-Action Ultra Face Cream with SPF during the day, the Rénergie Lift Multi-Action Night Cream in the evenings, and Rénergie Lift Multi-Action Ultra Eye Cream morning and night.

According to New York-based dermatologist Jeanette Graf. M.D, linseed extract is a lipo-hydroxy acid that can help buffer visible signs of aging. When combined with ingredients like jojoba, sunflower, and mimosa flower waxes, as in the case of Lancôme Rénergie Lift Multi-Action Ultra Face Cream with SPF, “the products also have a very moisturizing formula, ” says Dr. Graf who adds the sooner one can start using ingredients like this in their anti-aging routine, the better. And after using this trio for almost a month, I’ve already started to replace all the unnecessary items in my lineup with these formulas. Here’s why.

My skin looks visibly firmer

I have combination skin (and she’s very sensitive), so areas that veered between oily, very dry, and weirdly red were the norm. My complexion seemed to subtly balance out in the days after I started using the Lancôme Rénergie collection, transforming the pesky dry patches around my nose and on my forehead to a smoother, more supple state, and calming down any redness. Dr. Graf notes that skin-nurturing ingredients like glycerin and triglycerides (especially when partnered with the aforementioned linseed extract) are doing the heavy lifting here—pun intended. When skin is well-nourished and deeply hydrated, it appears firmer and plumper.

“Glycerin is one of the only moisturizers that has aqua channels that are recognized by the skin, making it a very effective hydrator,” she says. “Triglycerides are also important ingredients when it comes to moisturizing the skin, and when it comes to getting any kind of lift, ensuring your skin gets enough hydration is key.” At about the two-week mark, I caught a glimpse of my complexion in the mirror and immediately thought, wow, my skin looks really good. The tone and texture appeared more even, and it looked noticeably softer with no dryness in sight.

The products go to work day and night

According to Dr. Graf, your skin functions quite differently during the day than it does at night. “Circadian rhythms exist in the skin, and at night, your pH is a little bit lower, your microcirculation increases, you have an increase in trans-epidermal water loss, and it goes into a renewal process,” she explains. “That’s why it’s important to use active, but also hydrating, formulas at night.” The Rénergie Lift Multi-Action Night Cream checked all the boxes here—it was a nice complement to the retinol I use in the evenings, and because it’s packed with so many hard-working ingredients, it works to lift, firm and reduce the signs of wrinkles with results expected in just 14 days.

In the daytime, the focus should be on protecting your skin. That makes the Rénergie Lift Multi-Action Ultra Cream, which also works to lift, firm, correct dark spots, and protect against sun and environmental damage thanks to SPF of 30, the ideal pairing for the vitamin C serum I use during the day. “Your skin is in all different environments during the day, so using an SPF is essential for keeping it protected—even if it’s the middle of the winter and you’re not getting outside as much,” says Dr. Graf.

They’ve streamlined my skincare routine

Before the Rénergie line became my go-to, both my daily and nightly skincare routine consisted of at least six steps because of the multiple serums I used to target specific issues. Because both the Rénergie Ultra Cream and Night Cream do so much heavy lifting, I’ve been able to eliminate a lot of unnecessary steps from my regimen, giving me back the luxury of more time. Now, after cleansing and toning my skin, my daytime routine consists of a vitamin C serum layered underneath the SPF-infused Ultra Cream and Eye Cream, while my nighttime routine includes a retinol serum layered under the Night Cream. I also apply the Eye Cream at night to help reduce dark circles and de-puff eye bags. Easy peasy.

The results just keep coming

I’ve been using Lancôme’s Rénergie lineup for almost a month now, I’m hoping to see even more changes in the coming weeks. “You always want to give yourself four weeks before you evaluate something,” says Dr. Graf. “This is the time it takes for a cell to go all the way from your skin’s basal layer to the surface, and by then, you’re going to know if it’s helping the collagen and elastin.”

So far, so good as I steadily approach the four-week mark. While the lifted-look action is very subtle at this point, my skin looks noticeably smoother, softer, and more even. My laugh lines have visibly diminished ever-so-slightly, and my complexion seems to be a little bit more glowy these days. I’m excited to see the improvements on the way, and I’m pretty sure my mom would approve.

Cartier Debuts ‘Love is All’ Film With House Ambassadors

What defines family? Is it our own flesh and blood, or is it something more universal? The approaching holiday season means thinking about who we love and cherish, who we want to uplift and surround ourselves with. Cartier’s answer is that family is chosen, that it knows no borders or limits to who is invited to the table. With their newest film, ‘Love is All’, Cartier assembles a cast of characters to embrace our differences and demonstrate the unity that comes from self-expression tied to community.

The sweet melody of ‘Love is All’, first composed in 1975 by Roger Glover and Ronnie James Dio, accompanies a film starring a diverse cast of Friends of the Maison. From actress Maisie Williams, supermodel Mariacarla Boscono, singer Jackson Wang, and pop star Troye Sivan, the film was shot between Paris, Los Angeles, and Shanghai by London-based director Charlotte Wales. This multicultural roster represents family as we know it today: universal, chosen by passions and common threads.

The film stars a dozen of these ambassadors dancing inside a reimagined Cartier jewelry box, celebrating the joyous holiday season in style decked out in Cartier. The lighthearted, carefree energy of the video stirs up feelings of unity through creativity, and delights in the expression of self. The song lyrics ask, “Ain’t you happy we’re all together?,” and the response is overwhelmingly, yes.

This Indigneous Advocate is Telling Her Story With Jewellery

Paris Jewellers co-owners (Trang Wong and Chau Liu) with Shayla Stonechild. Photography courtesy of Paris Jewellers

“When we talk about reconciliation, it is about inter- and multi-generational healing.”

In the backyard of her childhood home, Shayla Stonechild’s grandfather, Ray Oulette, unearthed an arrowhead pendant.

He would wear the treasure as a necklace for the remainder of his life, and when he passed earlier this year, the pendant was handed down to one of Stonechild’s brothers. In return, she promised her grandfather she would make another.

Come March, the Indigenous advocate partnered with Edmonton-headquartered designer Paris Jewellers for a limited edition Arrowhead necklace.

The collab sold out, with 100 per cent of the net proceeds (totaling more than $31,500) donated to Matriarch Movement, the nonprofit organization Stonechild founded to shift the mainstream narrative around Indigenous women.

Thanks to the success of the first drop, Shayla Stonechild and Paris Jewellers have partnered once again.

The new collection consists of a 21 inch sterling silver necklace ($149) and a pair of earrings ($129), available in both sterling silver and 10kt solid yellow gold-plated sterling silver. Both pieces feature an arrowhead pendant (removable on the earrings to create a classic hoop) with three diamonds.

Photography courtesy of Paris Jewellers

As with the first Arrowhead necklace, Paris Jewellers will donate the proceeds to Matriarch Movement. And with the extension of the partnership (and another with Lululemon), the organization is in the planning and production phase for its first virtual Indigenous wellness series, set to launch in 2022.

“The arrowhead represents ties to my lineage along with protection, strength and moving forward,” Stonechild says. “As we move into 2022, it is important that we acknowledge our own lineages and the various histories of Canada and how they relate to Indigenous people. We must move forward and act in good relations with one another.”

The partnership with Shayla Stonechild is a natural fit Paris Jewellers, co-owned by sisters Chau Lui and Trang Wong. “As a family that immigrated from Vietnam, we are proud of our heritage and our humble beginnings,” Lui says. “We are also a women-owned business with a workforce of 90% women. That is why we are so passionate about bravely sharing our stories and creating the change we wish to see in the world.”

FASHION connected with Lui and Stonechild about the new collection, the power of personal style and reconciliation.

Could you discuss the making of the Paris Jewellers x Shayla Stonechild arrowhead pendant and its symbolism?

Chau Lui: “I spoke to Shayla about how she wanted people to feel when they wore the piece…After that, I got to work by putting the ideas together and starting to sketch. It was important to include three diamonds in the necklace to represent our past, present and future; to acknowledge the past, which is what got us to the present, and to be intentional about the changes that we make now, in order to create the future we want for our communities. Once I had the initial designs, I shared them with Shayla and she loved each piece.”

How will the proceeds be used to fund various workshops, resources and other initiatives?

Shayla Stonechild: “We will be using the proceeds of this collaboration to create an all-Indigenous wellness series that highlights seven different Indigenous instructors throughout Turtle Island. We will also be curating the second official photo/video shoot for the Matriarch Movement, highlighting a series of Indigenous women and two-spirited people. We’ll be exploring how each of them reclaim their power and do the transformative work they are responsible for in their community.”

CL: “Our goal will always be to empower women and help amplify Indigenous voices; creating space for those who have been silenced for far too long to reclaim their power and tell their stories in their own voices.”

How did you balance masculine and feminine energies for this collection?

SS: “We designed the collaboration with all of our relatives in mind. It is for women, men, non-binary and two spirit. It evokes a masculine feeling with a feminine touch. I believe in a balance and integration of the sacred masculine and feminine energies within ourselves. When we embrace both, we can express a holistic worldview.”

Chau Liu and Shayla Stonechild. Photography courtesy of Paris Jewellers

What compelled you to partner with Paris Jewellers for another collection?

SS: “Paris Jewellers is a local, female founded, Canadian brand that I grew up walking by in the mall ever since I was a child. My grandparents actually gifted me my amethyst grad ring from Paris Jewellers. I feel like I have known this brand my entire life. Since my first meeting with Paris Jewellers, Chau made it clear that they were looking for a long-term partnership, that my voice and vision mattered.”

What does healing and reconciliation mean for the Matriarch Movement, and yourself, as we look ahead to 2022?

SS: “A big part of our own healing journeys are about looking within the aspects of our identities that we hide from the world (or even from ourselves). Those fragments are waiting to be integrated and hold a lot of medicine and teachings if we allow them to see the light…Our personal healing journey must begin before we can talk about our collective one.

“Reconciliation is now at the point where we shouldn’t just be talking about it. We need action, recognition of our rights and title, representation and inclusion within every sector and industry. When we talk about reconciliation, it is about inter- and multi-generational healing. Not only within our own communities but also within non-Indigenous people.

“Right now, Indigenous people are still fighting to have our basic human rights met, the right to have access to clean drinking water, the right to even stay alive in a colonial world.

“When we talk about reconciliation we also need to demand [the federal government to] implement the 94 Calls to Action by the TRC, the 231 Calls to Justice, and…the framework within the United Nations Declaration of Indigenous Peoples here in Canada. When we talk about reconciliation, we also need to talk about dismantling the racist Indian Act and the Doctrine of Discovery that still affects every aspect of Indigenous lives. Reconciliation [is] interconnected to our own individual and collective healing. It is an ongoing process and a lifelong commitment.”

Photography courtesy of Paris Jewellers

How do you see jewellery, personal style and identity as being intertwined?

SS: “Jewellery and personal style have the ability to introduce yourself before you even say ‘Tansi.’ We know that crystals, gemstones and jewellery have the ability to affect one’s own individual being while wearing it…For me, wearing jewellery is an invitation to tell a story, to invite a new feeling, vibration and/or intention into my life. This in return, affects my day to day life which then, creates my identity over time.”

To Madelaine Petsch, Cheryl Blossom’s Supernatural Turn on Riverdale Makes Perfect Sense

Riverdale season 6 is premiering into a new world of possibility. The show where anything can happen has inevitably connected to the otherworldly—which offered a perfect crossover opportunity with The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, another TV universe born from the Archie comics. The Riverdale character channeling the most of this new power is maple syrup heiress Cheryl Blossom, who has never needed literal magic to be larger than life. This makes perfect sense to the woman who plays her: Madelaine Petsch. After all, the actress also does more than any one human being should be capable of, simultaneously taking her ELLE.com phone interview while getting her nails done.

“I have no time!” she says. This is not an overstatement; besides the full-time work of embodying Cheryl, Petsch recently starred in and produced her first indie feature, Jane, “a psychological thriller that explores social media anxiety and mental health from the perspective of a high school student.” She just wrapped the new romantic comedy About Fate opposite Emma Roberts and is still making YouTube videos for her channel of 6.83 million subscribers. One of the reasons why Petsch is so well-equipped to juggle all of this is the unequivocal support of her parents, who raised her plant-based on their idyllic-sounding farm. (“I’d wake up and my dad would be feeding deer out of a can with apples he’d grown on a tree,” she jokes.) They also enrolled her in dance classes before she could even verbalize wanting to do it.

“So by age four I was like, ‘I want to do theater’ and they supported that,” the 27-year-old says. “They championed what I wanted, they supported my career, and the moment I said I wanted to move to L.A. to be an actress, it wasn’t even a question to them and I think that’s very rare and I was very lucky and they were very supportive.”

Petsch is still vegan, and produced 2021’s Meat Me Halfway for Amazon Prime, a documentary about what it takes to bring meat reduction to the average diet. She deadpans, “People always love to pull my leg and ask me if breast milk is vegan. I’m not even going to get into it,” then adds, “If you try to put yourself in any box people try to find a way to push you out of it on the Internet these days.”

Much like Cheryl, Petsch can’t be boxed into doing one thing. Here, she talks to ELLE.com about her many endeavors.

Cheryl has always been a larger-than-life character. Riverdale itself is pretty over the top and magic was the one place it hadn’t gone. How did you feel when you heard about your season 6 arc leaning towards the supernatural?

You know what’s funny? I felt like for Cheryl it totally made sense. And a lot of the things that have happened over the course of her five years on the show made a lot of sense now. And now that we’re well into season 6, it just makes so much more sense. Because there’s really nowhere we can’t go anymore. As an actor, you want that, right? I feel like I can play anything with my character.

The show took a big risk by leaping ahead in time after so many seasons. How does it feel to be playing someone closer to your real age? Does it feel more in touch with who you are now?

Not at all. First of all, I will ride that ship as long as I can. As long as I look youthful I will continue to do that because why not milk it? Enjoy it. I only take roles that feel authentic to me, so there’s nothing that feels inauthentic about playing a high school student, and I played one up until two years ago. I think it’s about how I get into the character’s bones; not how old they are. It’s their occupation, if that makes sense.

It does make sense. As I get older I wonder, “How much can I really remember about being a teen?” but I guess you’ve been living in that world for many years now so it’s not as much of a distance.

I feel like there’s something about being on a hit TV show, a teen TV show too, where I feel so in touch with teens where I kind of still feel like one. Which maybe isn’t a good thing for my mental health! But for my work it’s great.

You’ve said that you have experienced a “kind of trauma that basically makes you think you always have to be doing something.” I always think of Cheryl as someone who is very motivated by trauma. I wanted ask how much you think about trauma when you’re playing Cheryl? Or any other characters?

I think about trauma especially with Cheryl most days. I think about what motivates her to do a scene, and nine times out of ten it’s some trauma-based fear or trauma-based encounter she’s had that’s making her behave that way. The rest of the time, it depends on the character. So with Olivia in Jane, it’s not really trauma-based. It’s her fear of failure. Is what kind of drives her and drives her anxiety as well. And I noticed that that’s a thing I felt as a high school student; I think the pressures that we put on high school students are super unrealistic and can become very unhealthy very quickly. And that’s what I love about that movie, I feel like it’s the first time in my life where I’ve read a script and or even seen a film where I feel like anxiety was personified in a way that I understood it and it felt right to me. I’ve struggled with anxiety for a very long time, and I’ve never been able to find a piece of material that resonates with me on that level.

How does that portrayal feel more truthful to you?

I think the way that it’s all-consuming for her. Because I think you watch this character lose something very important to her and then not get a goal she’d been looking forward to her entire life. Her entire world crumbles around her. She loses her best friend at the beginning of the movie, she commits suicide. And I lost a best friend to suicide when I was quite young, so I was able to get into this character through that. I think that’s the reason I was able to connect with her was we had so much in common, and the anxiety is very easy for me to understand. I don’t know how to describe this without giving it away, but it’s almost like this monster that she can’t get rid of. And that’s kind of how anxiety feels to me sometimes. It can be very burdening. It can feel very dark and heavy if you don’t take care of it, and that’s what you watch her go through throughout the entire film. I also don’t think there are a lot of films being made about anxiety, so I don’t think there’s a lot of things to reference. The thing that’s cool about it is it’s so layered. It’s about the pressures of social media on a teenager who is trying to get into college who has gone through a huge loss. It’s kind of about how everything becomes insurmountable. It becomes too much and overwhelming.

Talking about social media anxiety, you seem very together, but it also seems overwhelming to have such a huge following. I thought about that while reading Jane‘s description, because it seems like you’re presenting yourself in this really lovely way that’s so engaging and upbeat. I wonder if that becomes overwhelming to be posting and having so much expectation on you.

Well, thank you for thinking I come off like that, that’s very kind. I think it can be stressful sometimes. Authenticity is very important to me; it’s one of my favorite words in life. When I’m having a hard day—and this is something I’ve been working on the last couple of years, really being truthful when I’m posting something, to be honest about how I’m feeling, versus just posting another happy, positive thing, because that doesn’t feel authentic to me. After five or six years of being in the public eye, I think I’ve really learned how to be grounded enough in my relationships on social media and to social media. In a way that still feels right to me. That’s a really challenging balance.

You had said that you’re not talking about future relationships. Does that mean you’ll never talk about romantic relationships again or just not on social media?

I just think I’ve realized that so much of my life, as you said, is in the public eye that having something private and to myself is really important to me and to future relationships, because I think it creates an environment where nobody who doesn’t truly know me at my core gets to have a say in what I’m doing. In my previous relationship [with musician Travis Mills], I feel like a lot of people felt like I owed them an explanation as to why we broke up. And you know what, they kind of were right, because I had put so much online. I almost felt like I should have said something, but it’s like, that’s not how I want to feel, it’s my relationship. So I felt like taking a step back from the public eye when it comes to my relationships was the right move for me. So that I can just focus on the person that I’m with.

“I felt like taking a step back from the public eye when it comes to my relationships was the right move for me.”

But you do get a lot of expectations from fans not only about your personal life but about the characters you play. You got a lot of negativity, which inspired your YouTube channel, because Cheryl seemed so awful before we really knew her background. Have you gotten a lot of blowback over the dissolution of Choni, the relationship between Cheryl and Toni?

Well, I think people know I am like the world’s biggest Choni-shipper. So I don’t think they’re really angry at me about that, because I want them back together more than anybody. Who can say they’re not already, you never know. Until you watch season 6. My little plug. I think that in season 1, we were still such a new show. We were still building a fan base, but now that we have a built-in audience they understand that we don’t write the show. My job is to bring to life what is put on the page in front of me. Now I’m lucky enough that I’m in a position where—you know when Cheryl first became a character after Season 1 I called Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa, the Riverdale creator], or maybe after the pilot, and I was like, “Cheryl’s a lesbian.” He was like, “What are you talking about?” and I was like, “Cheryl’s a lesbian. I’m sorry, but Cheryl’s a lesbian. I don’t know how to describe it to you any better, I can explain it to you why I think so.” We talked it out and he agreed with me and Cheryl became a lesbian. I’m lucky to be in a position where I can have those dialogues and that’s very rare in my career, and typically it would just be [that] I bring to life what’s on the page. And I think that the audience who watches the show understands that. But I don’t get any of that [blowback]—the writers get all of that. They get a lot of it.

I never thought of Cheryl as a lesbian specifically but as bisexual. I don’t know why. Is that canon that she is a lesbian and not bisexual?

She is a lesbian. We were struggling with her sexual identity which is ironic, for a while, and we had a long conversation about it and we just agreed that she’s a lesbian. I don’t really know how to describe it to you, but after playing her for a year I know she’s a lesbian.

I believe you if you say it, absolutely. There’s a lot of bisexuality on the show and a lot of flexible identity on the show. Is that because Riverdale wants to explore more relationships or to reflect more fluid identities in young people now?

I can’t speak for the writers, but I can tell you it was very important to all of us that we created a show that tried to be representative of the real world. And I think now more than ever you see people embracing their sexuality, especially the generation that watches our show. So many of them have come out as bi, or lesbian, or gay, or queer, or LGBTQIA+. I think that was very important to us. You don’t see that very often on teen television shows, especially when we first started. So I think that’s probably why, but I can’t really speak for the writers. Also, our showrunner is gay. It was important to him, growing up to make Kevin Keller gay. So I think there were a lot of people fighting for that in the room.

You’re in the movie About Fate with Emma Roberts. How was it being in a comedic romantic space rather than this torrid, dramatic romantic space with a character?

Ah! It was so fun, oh my goodness! I had the best time. And because typically I do play these more dramatic roles, it was just really nice to go in and improv was encouraged and I had a great scene partner. I worked with Thomas Mann, I was actually playing his girlfriend, and it was so fun to be able to improv and to feel completely free as an artist and say what feels natural. [Riverdale is] a word perfect show, which means whatever they put on the page we have to say exactly how it was written for the most part. So to be able to play with the words a little bit more it was a treat, truly…It was a great environment, Emma is such a rock star, truly. I’m so obsessed with her, she’s so great. It was great to go from Riverdale straight into that and then into Jane, because it felt like a breath of fresh air before the darkness of Jane. You needed a break. I think I had, on set [of Jane], like not kidding, six panic attacks. Because I’m triggering panic attacks from hyperventilating…So it was great to have this lightness and comedy [in About Fate] and it was so fun and the character is crazy and it’s great and I loved her.

This is my last and maybe a random question, but while catching up on the last few seasons, I really wanted to know: How real is Jason Blossom for you?

Oh, one hundred percent. A lot of Cheryl’s life, the driving force is Jason and the loss of Jason. Because I believe in her heart of hearts, Jason was her soul mate in a non-sexual way. He was her person, so I think losing him is a huge driving force of a lot of Cheryl’s actions and I think that’s why she makes a nursery for Toni, because deep inside she wanted Toni back and I think she feels like she didn’t appreciate it for what it was at the time and now she doesn’t want to lose somebody she loves again. I also have a brother, so it’s very helpful to have that relationship.

You kind of hinted earlier that Toni and Cheryl may get together in this upcoming season.

I did not hint at that! I did not. I said that they might, and they might not. You never know…just know that I am pushing for it. That’s all you need to know.

The Coolest Twins on The Internet Just Launched A Holiday Beauty Collection

The coolest twins on the Internet, beauty moguls and DJs Simi and Haze Khadra, are releasing their brand’s third collection, and it is holiday-ready. SimiHaze Beauty came to market in the summer of 2021, already making its mark, delivering consumers velvety soft lip balms and eyeshadow palettes that even beauty novices can use and liquid blushes for cheeks that are perfectly pinch-able. Now, with their third collection, they are upping the ante with shimmering lip glosses, a galaxy-inspired eyeshadow palette, and easy-to-apply eye crystals.

“The whole collection is inspired by nature and natural elements,” Simi and Haze told ELLE.com. “We were thinking about the moon and the reflection of the moon.” While the glitzy elements of the collection are Holiday-ready, creating wearable looks without the help of a makeup artist was a core goal when creating the new collection. “I want [consumers] to feel like they can wear it with casual clothes to make it more dressed up, or they can have like a dressy look, and then not need a makeup artist and elevate it even more, and feel more glamorous.”

SIMIHAZEBEAUTY

simihaze

SIMIHAZEBEAUTY

The must-have item in the collection is undoubtedly their Eye Play Gem Pack, which is Euphoria-like in the best way. “Immediately, it transforms your demeanor, and you become more confident and more energized in yourself and your look,” the twins said. Their goal with the crystals was to make them more accessible for the everyday person to put on, rather than requiring four different tools for application. “We just wanted to give it a more efficient application,” Simi and Haze said. “To us, the future of beauty is more efficiency, and it’s achieving a look that could have taken two hours in two minutes.”

For the twins, versatility is critical. Creating different looks with the same products is something they’ve had to learn when getting ready together. “Sometimes, if we look too similar, we’ll have to change our look because we don’t want to do the whole twin thing on purpose sometimes.” That’s why it was vital for them to create products that could be used in different ways. “The [eyeshadow] quads all can be versatile.”

This third collection is the next step in slowly creating a beauty line with something for everyone. “We’re just getting started,” they said. However, the more products they come out with, the more they create an authentic vision of themselves. “I feel like it’s revealing different parts of our personality.”

“We’re just building our world.”

How Do Figure Skaters Not Get Dizzy During Those Impressive Spins? An Investigation

Figure skating will undoubtedly be one of the most talked-about events at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. It’s always incredibly impressive to see what these athletes can do, balanced on thin blades and skimming along ice. However, there’s one question that has always plagued us: How do figure skaters not get dizzy? With all the spinning required in elite programs, you’d think that they’d be dizzy all the time, but there’s a method for avoiding it that skaters learn over years of training.

First, a little bit about the science of dizziness. “When we move our head during a spin, our eyes start to move in the opposite direction but reach their limit before our head completes a full 360-degree turn. So our eyes flick back to a new starting position midspin, and the motion repeats as we rotate. When our head rotation triggers this automatic, repetitive eye movement, called nystagmus, we get dizzy.” Scientific American explains. Figure skaters, like dancers, have to train strategies to either avoid or push past the sensation of dizziness.

Many dancers train with a “spotting” technique: staring at one spot, then turning the head rapidly all at once rather than rotating more slowly with the rest of the body. That technique, however, is not quite as popular with figure skaters. Instead, they train their eyes to use an opposing motion, called optokinetic nystagmus, to avoid dizziness as much as possible. According to Scientific American, this is similar to the eye movements we use when watching a moving object passing in front of us, and it helps to offset the nystagmus and reduce dizziness.

Nevertheless, skaters do still get dizzy sometimes, although long-term training can help them get used to it so that it doesn’t affect them the way it would a non-athlete. It’s a good thing they’re used to it, too, because spins at the elite level involve a lot of rotations! According to the International Skating Union rules, individual spins require at least six revolutions. Combination spins, which involve multiple consecutive spin types and positions, require at least 10 revolutions overall. With multiple spins required per program, it’s no wonder that skaters have to train very carefully to ensure they can stay on their feet.

Spider-Man: No Way Home: Everything We Know

Spider-Man and his crew are back for a new adventure that will undoubtedly turn his world upside-down (literally) just in time for the holidays. Marvel Studios and Sony announced that Spider-Man: No Way Home will hit theaters on December 17.

The highly anticipated installment of Tom Holland’s web-slinging trilogy is rumored to introduce the multiverse to the MCU. With No Way Home being produced by Sony, could fans get Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and even the introduction of live-action Miles Morales in one film? Here’s everything we know.

When will No Way Home be released?

Spider-Man: No Way Home will hit theaters on Friday, December 17, 2021. Tickets go onsale Nov. 29, Cyber (or “Spider”) Monday.

It’s still unclear if the film will also end up streaming soon, considering the ongoing pandemic, but it likely won’t be on Disney+ for a while. Most other Spider-Man films aren’t on the platform, given Disney and Sony’s deal over the franchise, but a recent agreement between the two studios will make Holland’s Spidey films available to stream on Disney+ starting in 2022.

Can I watch a trailer?

Yes, it’s here! The official trailer released by Sony on Nov. 16 reveals Holland’s Peter Parker going head to head with multiple former Spider-Man villains: Doctor Octavius (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Sandman, and Lizard. They were all unleashed during a Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) spell gone wrong that opened up the multiverse.

While the preview shows no trace of Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield, the final moments still hint that they could be on their way. “They’re starting to come through and I can’t stop them,” Strange says.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

On August 23, Sony released a teaser trailer that sent viewers into a frenzy. The footage revealed a major sneak peek at Peter Parker’s life after Mysterio revealed his true identity to the world, which resulted in his name being slandered and him nearly ending up behind bars. So, he goes to Doctor Strange and Wong (Benedict Wong) for help. Peter asks Doctor Strange to make it possible for people to forget his true identity. As Doctor Strange grants his wish, he later realizes it was a mistake.

Doctor Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina), a famous villain from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man franchise, appears at the end of the trailer. Peter activates his iron spider suit as he prepares for battle.

Check out the official teaser trailer below.

Is this Tom Holland’s last Spider-Man film?

According to Holland, No Way Home will be the final installment of his Spider-Man trilogy, which started in 2017 with Spider-Man Homecoming. Collider confirmed that Holland’s contract with Marvel Studios ends with No Way Home. “[Spiderman 3] would be my last one [under contract], so I’ve always said to them if they want me back, I’ll be there in a heartbeat,” Holland said. “I’ve loved every minute of being a part of this amazing world. It’s changed my life for the better. I’m so lucky to be here. If they want me back, I’ll be there, if they don’t, I will walk off into the sunset a very, very happy person because it’s been an amazing journey.”

Zendaya also spoke to E! Daily Pop about her experience making No Way Home. She recalled filming “was so much fun,” but also “kind of bittersweet.” She added, “We don’t know if we’re gonna do another one. Is it just gonna be three and done? Like, kind of normally you do three movies, and that’s pretty much it.”

What will No Way Home be about?

The film will follow Peter Parker after Mysterio reveals Spider-Man’s identity and frames him for his death. The film synopsis reads: “For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange, the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man,” per ComicBook.com.

Who’s in the cast?

Of course, Holland will reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. His on-screen and reported off-screen girlfriend Zendaya will reprise her role as MJ as well. Marisa Tomei will continue her role as Aunt May, along with Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Angourie Rice as Betty Brant, and Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson.

Fan speculation continues to swirl on whether the multiverse will re-introduce Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man roles, and Marvel and Sony have yet to confirm the rumors. Garfield addressed the theories in an interview with Variety: “I understand why people are freaking out about the concept of that because I’m a fan as well. You can’t help but imagine scenes and moments of ‘Oh, my God, how fucking cool would it be if they did that,’” he told the outlet. “But it’s important for me to say on the record that this is not something I’m aware I am involved in. But I know I’m not going to be able to say anything that will convince anyone that I don’t know what’s happening. No matter what I say, I’m fucked. It’s either going to be really disappointing for people or it’s going to be really exciting.”

From Maguire’s movies, Molina’s Doc Ock and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin return. With Sandman’s appearance in the trailer, we can assume Thomas Haden Church comes back too. Meanwhile, Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-man franchise villain Electro (Jamie Foxx) was also added to the roster. With the Lizard’s cameo in the trailer, it’s possible Rhys Ifans is reprising the role as well.

What is Doctor Strange’s role in the film?

Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) will play a pivotal role in Spider-Man’s third installment. After the events of Far From Home, Peter leans on Doctor Strange’s abilities to solve his problems, which alters his life in a way he didn’t expect. This film could simultaneously set up for Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, which will hit theaters on May 6, 2022.

The 6 Self-Care Staples ELLE’s Beauty Director Is Using All Season Long

Many of us are heading into the holidays facing freezing temps, frigid air, plus a sad lack of daylight. And when the sun rises after your morning alarm goes off, then sets before the workday is over, it can obviously take a toll on overall well-being.

On the bright side—no pun intended—this is what makes winter a great (and crucial) time to tune into your body and mind, according to ELLE’s Beauty Director, Chloe Hall. “Self-care is always important,” she says. “I try and make time every day to check in with myself. It’s so necessary—for everyone!”

Hall prefers to pamper herself during her post-shower, pre-bedtime routine, often relying on products that both help her de-stress from the day and also make sure she’s prepped for the next morning. Below, she shares six of her current favorites.

An Ultra Cozy Robe

guerlain abeille royale youth watery oil

What better way to start winding down at the end of the day—or, let’s be honest, any time of day—than slipping into a luxurious robe? Extra points for indulging in a warm bath or shower beforehand (as you should, you deserve it).

Hall’s current favorite is Sunday Forever’s Classic Elliot Constellation Robe because “it’s super soft and cozy, but the material is breathable so it doesn’t get too hot,” she says.

This Multitasking Watery Oil

Abeille Royale Advanced Youth Watery Oil

Guerlain
guerlain.com

$135.00

“It feels and smells like a day at the spa,” Hall says about Guerlain’s newly reformulated Abeille Royale Youth Watery Oil, adding that she also, “noticed more hydrated skin very soon after my first use.”

That’s likely due to the combination of ingredients in this hardworking facial oil—which promises to provide the benefits of a serum, oil, and an essence in one formula. The ingredient list includes microbeads of soothing commiphora oil (commonly known as myrrh), ultra-nourishing royal jelly, and a proprietary blend of four different types of honey, which the brand calls “black bee repair technology.”

“I applied it onto my face and neck right after cleansing, and it went on super smooth,” Hall says. “The texture feels rich, but not heavy—it absorbed into my skin right away.”

A Hydrating Lip Mask

guerlain

Obviously, nobody likes dry, chapped lips. But they’re often super hard to stave off, even when it’s not cold outside.

Hall’s pro tip: Apply a nourishing lip mask right before bed. Then, let the ingredients work their magic while you sleep so you can wake up to a more hydrated, plumper pout. She likes Tatcha’s Kissu Lip Mask, which can also be applied any time of day.

Eye Cream + Reusable Patches

The skin around your eyes is the thinnest and most delicate on your entire complexion, so it’s always a good idea to show it some extra T.L.C. If you aren’t already, aim to use an eye cream daily, and even consider taking things up a notch with eye masks, Hall recommends.

After applying Youth to the People’s Superberry Dream Eye Cream, she layers on the Forever Eye Mask by Dieux Skin for 10-20 minutes to seal in all of the cream’s hydrating ingredients (like squalane and hyaluronic acid). The best part: These under-eye patches are reusable, so you can pamper yourself as often as needed without any excess trash.

A Reusable Manicure Set

guerlain

“Long live the press on nail!” Hall says. “They are so quick and easy, and I don’t have to commit to one style—I can always switch it up.”

For the holiday season, Hall is loving Static Nails’ Reusable Pop-On Manicure Set in Venomous Round.

These Jeans Are More Comfortable than My Workout Sweats

I fell in love with my Liverpool jeans on a random Thursday. I dropped my daughter off at school, did Pilates, and went straight to my desk after getting home. It was about three hours into work that I had that moment of, “Oh, hm, I’m still in my workout clothes…” It’s a 50/50 split as to how often I’ll properly change versus staying in my gym togs, but with a brand-new pair of jeans adding some temptation to the equation, it was a day for the former—and that is how I came to be standing in my closet, shocked and amazed that the pair of jeans I’d pulled on were actually comfier than the stretchy yoga sweats I’d been wearing all morning.

Some background: I am a denim devotee. I own a lot of jeans and have never, ever understood the camp that thinks they’re uncomfortable (I wore them regularly throughout the early days of quarantine in 2020, confused at why that would impress colleagues or friends who insisted they’d only been in sweatpants for months—they’re just jeans, guys).

I have stretchy skinny pairs and thick vintage-inspired pairs; I have jeans I regularly reach for on long car rides and others that I’ll suffer through for style, fully aware they’ll actually be uncomfortable part of the time. You name the situation, I have denim for it.

HANNAH CROP FLARE WITH DESTRUCTED LET DOWN HEM

liverpooljeans.com

$98.00

As such, I came to my Liverpool crop flares (the “Hannah”) as both a bit of a category expert and a snob—and I pretty much fell in love from the moment I pulled them on. Rough or rigid material will never be as apparent as when replacing something as soft as yoga pants, and I was amazed to think the jeans actually felt better than my leggings.

Instead of that regretful tinge of wishing I’d stayed in my workout wear, I was thrilled to be in jeans. It wasn’t just that I felt more officially ready for the day (real clothes are always good for that), but how great they felt: like a glove but without the tightness that usually comes with new jeans. I could bend and sit and stretch as if I’d already been wearing them for hours, but the silhouette was fresh-from-the-laundry. (I give credit to the Hannah’s composition of cotton, lyocell, elastane and polyester.)

Other items on the pro list: the color, a perfectly washed-out black; a crop flare that flutes over the ankle bone but doesn’t approach bell-bottom territory; and a frayed hem that feels realistic, not manufactured. These are the sort of small factors and details that go into making a great pair of jeans (or ruin an otherwise acceptable pair), and I’m happy to report that Liverpool delivered on all fronts.

The price tag can’t be ignored either—and clocking in under $100 keeps them more budget-friendly than some of the pricier pairs in my collection. The brand itself, too, is designed to make us feel good — it has eco-consciousness at the forefront and even signed the UN Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, a group that aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

All in all, they’re a winner and a new rotational favorite.

Taylor Swift is Reclaiming the Narrative

The songwriter’s genius is no longer up for debate.

Taylor Swift dropped the long-awaited re-recorded version of her 2012 album Red earlier this week, with nine never-before-released songs “from the vault” and a one ten-minute long version of the breakup ballad “All Too Well.”

This, of course, sent fans into a collective emotional tailspin, with many of us (myself included) spending our weekend crying in bed. But can you blame us?

With many of its songs rumoured to be inspired by her three-month relationship with actor Jake Gyllenhaal, Red (Taylor’s Version) is a roller coaster of passion, confusion and heartbreak. Perhaps the most coveted part of the release is the aforementioned extended version of “All Too Well,” widely agreed upon to be the best song on the album and possibly the best song Swift has ever written. To further pull fans’ heartstrings, the artist debuted a short film for the track.

When Red was first released, Swift was often portrayed in the media as a villainous “serial dater” who begrudgingly wrote songs about her exes. Now, in our post #MeToo world, it’s clear that she was a young woman simply trying to navigate romantic relationships with men who were far too old for her. In her relationship with Gyllenhaal, for instance, she was 20 and he was 29. Prior to this, she dated John Mayer when she was just 19 and he was 32 — yes, you read that right.

She drives this message home in All Too Well: The Short Film. To play the role of the couple, Swift cast 19-year-old Sadie Sink and 30-year-old Dylan O’Brien. This stark age gap made viewers uncomfortable — and in true Taylor Swift fashion, that was intentional. The film portrayed the power imbalance between the couple and showed manipulation tactics used by O’Brien’s character onto his much younger girlfriend. As a result, the internet was dominated by “All Too Well” discourse over the weekend, namely focused on predatory behavior and manipulation.

By the end of the 10-minute tune, Swift hits us with a sharp dig toward her ex: “I’ll get older, but your lovers stay my age.” Gyllenhaal, now 40, is currently dating 25-year-old model Jeanne Cadieu.

At the start of the new week, Swift proved the Red (Taylor’s Version) rollout is far from over. On November 15, she released a music video with the album’s vault track, “I Bet You Think About Me (Taylor’s Version).” She tapped longtime friend Blake Lively to make her directorial debut on the project, and enlisted actor Miles Teller to play the male antagonist opposite of her. (ICYMI: in light of the music video, rumours surfaced on November 16 that Teller refused to get his COVID-19 vaccine, which he quickly cleared up on Twitter.)

The video shows Taylor Swift gloriously sabotaging an all-white wedding wearing — you guessed it — red. There’s also an appearance from the infamous red scarf that reportedly inspired the name of the album — a scarf she left at Gyllenhaal’s sister’s house when she visited for Thanksgiving (IYKYK). Oh, and there’s a scene where she rips apart an extravagant wedding cake with her bare hands. It’s art!

Re-releasing Red was not simply an artistic musical choice. Swift is re-recording her previous albums because she doesn’t own the master recordings of any of her records prior to 2019, due to the contract she had with her previous record label, Big Machine Records. By re-recording and re-releasing, Swift has found a loophole where she can reclaim her work, tagging onto each newly released song: “(Taylor’s Version).”

Along with the return of Swift’s Red is a widespread cultural appreciation for the album’s lyrics and artistry. When Red first came out in 2012, Taylor Swift was often written off as “basic” by critics — likely because she was beloved primarily by young girls, and this, for some reason, often leads to mockery. Her re-release coincides with the cultural renaissance of other pop culture pillars that faced ridicule in the early aughts — like Jennifer’s Body and Britney Spears, for instance. Today, Swift is widely regarded as one of the best songwriters of our time, and it’s no longer up for debate.

With the release of Red (Taylor’s Version) nine years after it was initially delivered, Swift is now 31 years old and is not experiencing heartbreak from the men who wronged her. Instead, she is using the opportunity to bond with her fans and change the narrative. We love to see it.

A Guide to Curling’s Rules and Scoring, Just in Time For the 2022 Winter Olympics

Curling is always one of the most buzzed-about sports at the Winter Olympics. After all, any game that involves players yipping and yelling, “Sweep! Sweeeep!” is sure to capture viewers’ attention. But if you find this Olympic ice sport equally fascinating and confusing, you’re not alone — curling isn’t something most folks learned to play in gym class. If you’d like to know more about the game than some jargon you picked up from the announcers (what is a “hammer,” anyway?), we’ve got you covered. Here’s a brief overview of how curling is played and how the scoring system works.

Curling Rules: How Does the Game Work?

Curling may seem complicated to a casual viewer, but the rules established by the World Curling Federation are actually pretty simple. Teams try to slide heavy, polished granite rocks (known as “stones” in curling parlance) down a sheet of ice toward the “house”: an area of the ice marked with a circular target. Points are awarded based on how close the stone gets to the center of the house, also known as the “button.” There’s a catch, however: two teams of four play on the same sheet of ice at the same time, alternating throws. This means that part of curling gameplay is about trying to knock the other team’s stones further away or blocking them from having a good shot.

Curling requires a lot of precision and strategy. Teams try to land their own throws as close as possible, but they may also aim to knock their opponents’ stones out of the house, which prevents them from being scored. Each member of a team throws twice in an end, including the “skip,” or team captain, who determines overall strategy. When they’re not throwing, everyone except the skip is tasked with sweeping, which is probably the most iconic image from the sport. Players run in front of the stone and buff the ice with brooms to reduce friction and make the stone slide more easily. Sweeping, too, is very strategic, as it can be used to speed up stones that are moving too slowly or adjust the trajectory of one that’s curving in the wrong direction. However, sweeping in front of a stone that’s already going too fast can result in it overshooting the house.

Curling Scoring: How Are Points Awarded?

Scoring happens after each “end,” or after each team has thrown eight stones. First, the teams must determine who got a stone closest to the button. Officials may need to use specialized sensors to make that decision, especially in elite competition where the differences may not be obvious to the eye. The winning team is awarded one point for winning, then additional points — one per stone — for each of their remaining stones that are closer to the button than their opponents’ closest stone. Only stones that landed somewhere in the house (and stayed there without getting knocked out by a later throw) can count for scoring. The team that fails to score gets the “hammer,” or the advantage of throwing last in the next round.

Curling matches typically last for 10 ends, and at the conclusion of the game, the team with the most points wins. Concessions are also a fairly common part of curling, especially later in the game. The final end doesn’t have to be completed for victory to be declared, either; if one team has fewer stones left to throw than points it needs to catch up, the game can end then and there. It’s also possible for an end to be completed without anyone scoring, if no stones are left in the house at that point. In that case, no one gets any points for that end, and the game moves on.

At the Olympics, each curling tournament begins with round-robin play, where every team plays every other team. The top four teams advance to the semifinals. After those matches, the winning two teams advance to the gold medal game to play for the gold and silver medals, while the two losing teams have one last matchup to determine the bronze medal.

Don’t Look Up: Everything We Know About Netflix’s Star-Studded Film

Something big is coming. For us, it’s Don’t Look Up, the Adam McKay comedy that’s chock-full of celebrities ranging from Meryl Streep to Ariana Grande. For the characters in the film, it’s the massive comet headed for Earth, threatening to destroy the planet. It’s up to an astronomy grad student and her professor (played by Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio, respectively) to warn the world of the looming danger in a giant media tour—but no one seems to care.

Here’s what to know about the movie.

When does it come out?

Don’t Look Up arrives in select theaters on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021. But it hits Netflix two weeks later on Friday, Dec. 24, 2021. Be on the lookout starting 3 a.m. ET.

Who’s in it?

Brace yourself for a seemingly never-ending list of A-listers. The cast includes:

  • Leonardo DiCaprio as Dr. Randall Mindy
  • Jennifer Lawrence as Kate Dibiasky
  • Cate Blanchett as Brie Evantee
  • Meryl Streep as President Janie Orlean
  • Rob Morgan as Dr. Clayton “Teddy” Oglethorpe
  • Jonah Hill as Jason Orlean
  • Mark Rylance as Peter Isherwell
  • Tyler Perry as Jack Bremmer
  • Timothée Chalamet as Yule
  • Ron Perlman as Colonel Drask
  • Ariana Grande as Riley Bina
  • Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi) as DJ Chello
  • Himesh Patel as Phillip
  • Melanie Lynskey as June Mindy
  • Michael Chiklis as Dan Pawketty
  • Tomer Sisley as Adul Grelio
  • Paul Guilfoyle as General Themes

Plus, Chris Evans has “a little cameo in the movie,” director Adam McKay teased to Entertainment Weekly.

McKay (The Big Short, Anchorman, Step Brothers) helmed the film and wrote the screenplay. He created the story with journalist David Sirota.

The filmmaker was eager to work with Lawrence. He told EW, “I’ve been a giant fan [of hers] since she first came on the scene and she just straight up makes me laugh. So I wrote this role for her. She was the first actor in.”

    What is the movie about?

Here’s the official synopsis, per Netflix:

Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), an astronomy grad student, and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) make an astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system. The problem — it’s on a direct collision course with Earth. The other problem? No one really seems to care. Turns out warning mankind about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is an inconvenient fact to navigate. With the help of Dr. Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), Kate and Randall embark on a media tour that takes them from the office of an indifferent President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her sycophantic son and Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah Hill), to the airwaves of The Daily Rip, an upbeat morning show hosted by Brie (Cate Blanchett) and Jack (Tyler Perry). With only six months until the comet makes impact, managing the 24-hour news cycle and gaining the attention of the social media obsessed public before it’s too late proves shockingly comical — what will it take to get the world to just look up?!

DiCaprio, a devoted climate activist, told EW that the script and the film’s environmental themes lured him in. “I knew when I read his script that it was incredibly unique, as it struck an important chord concerning the modern world we live in,” the Oscar winner told the outlet. “Adam has woven an incredibly timely message about society, how we communicate, our current priorities, and the climate crisis into an absurdly funny yet important movie.”

    Can I see a preview?

Of course! Watch the suspenseful (and chaotic) teaser trailer above and flip through first-look photos of the cast below.

Meet Tricia Symmes—the Mind Behind the CBD-forward Wellness Brand Noon & Night

Tricia Symmes always knew she wanted to help people. Both her parents worked in the healthcare field and, naturally, that fuelled her own interest in medicine—specifically in patient health and wellness. This curiosity led her to pursue a bachelor of science in kinesiology followed by a master of business administration, and she found her way into the vast world of pharmaceuticals.

“The pharmaceutical field really offered a great combination of research, science and business acumen,” says Symmes. “It made sense to start my career off in an industry where I could draw on the skills that I pursued in university, while also diving deep into the health and wellness spaces and really make a difference with patients.”

In 2019, after garnering over 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical field—10-plus at the C-Suite executive level—Symmes took a leap of faith and dove headfirst into the buzzy world of medical cannabis. She was drawn in by the category’s potential in offering alternative options to pharmaceuticals.

“I had this huge opportunity to create something special on the recreational side to complement our already growing medical business. It’s not often in your career that you get to build a team, brand and portfolio from scratch,” – Tricia Symmes

“There was a lot of education and awareness that needed to be done, and to be able to be part of the team that launched this from the ground up was something of great interest to me,” she says. “I also was able to use a lot of the skills that I had learned with my time in pharmaceuticals, that helped me move into this new, innovative space.”

Through her first role as general manager for a newly-formed cannabis extraction company, she gained a plethora of industry experience. Then, in August 2020, Aleafia Health offered her the role of chief commercial officer.

“I had this huge opportunity to create something special on the recreational side to complement our already growing medical business,” says Symmes. “It’s not often in your career that you get to build a team, brand and portfolio from scratch. I was really empowered under Geoff Benic’s leadership to be forward-thinking and innovative.”

Aleafia owns four licensed cannabis facilities, one of which is located in Port Perry, Ontario and is the first large-scale legal outdoor cultivation facility in Canadian history. The health and wellness-focused company has a diverse portfolio of products which includes flower, sublingual strips, oils, capsules, vapes and edibles, among others.

When she joined, there was limited exposure to the recreational market within their portfolio, and six months later, Sunday Market was born. Inspired by the many booths at outdoor farmers’ markets, Sunday Market consists of five brands: Nith & Grand, Divvy, Bogart’s Kitchen, Kin Slips (a California-based brand for which Aleafia Health is the exclusive Canadian manufacturer) and finally, Noon & Night, a CBD-forward line for consumers with wellness in mind.

Ideal for the canna-curious, Noon & Night currently consists of three products: Omega CBD Soft Gels, Lavender Fizz Bath Bombs and Freshly Minted Roll-Ons.

“We want to reach everyone—from the medical client to the new recreational cannabis user,” says Symmes, adding that they’re one of the few cannabis lines straddling the nutraceutical and personal care sectors.

Their Omega CBD Soft Gel product, for example, is made up of CBD extract suspended in omega-3 fish oil. Their Lavender Fizz Bath Bomb—made with locally sourced lavender—and Freshly Minted Roll-On both contain essential oils that provide an invigorating scent and cooling sensation.

“When formulating all of these products, we really put an emphasis on sourcing everything ourselves,” says Symmes. “The CBD cultivar is grown directly in our outdoor Port Perry farm.”

“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished in such a short time,” says Symmes. “The best thing is when you have a great consumer response to your brands—that’s something that makes it all worthwhile.”

Kristen Stewart Literally Swooned Over Robert Pattinson While Reminiscing About Their First ‘Twilight’ Makeout

Kristen Stewart gave The New Yorker a very honest reflection of her time filming Twilight in the magazine’s new profile on her, which serves as a career retrospective. In the piece, Stewart recounted her first impression of her Twilight co-star and later off-screen boyfriend Robert Pattinson when he came to audition for the role of Edward with her. She literally “mimicked a swoonrecreating her impression of him, The New Yorker wrote. According to the piece, Stewart and Pattinson read lines together for the role and made out as part of their audition.

“It was so clear who worked,” Stewart told the outlet with a grin. “I was literally just, like…” At that point, Stewart mimicked that swoon, then elaborated on what made Pattinson so right for taking on the role alongside her. “[He had an] intellectual approach that was combined with ‘I don’t give a fuck about this, but I’m going to make this sing.’ And I was, like, ‘Ugh, same,’” Stewart recalled, with a smile. “And, whatever, we were young and stupid and, not to say that we made it so much better, but that’s what it needed, and that’s what anybody playing those parts needed to feel.”

Stewart said the “public stoicism” surrounding her role in the film helped her as she continued her career in Hollywood. “Like, how fun for people to think they know you,” she said. “Did you think I was going to do Twilight forever? Is that how you saw me? If that’s how you saw me, then you really set me up for success, because I can do way more than that.”

Stewart, by the way, has spoken about Pattinson and their time in Twilight together before in interviews. In November 2019, she admitted she would’ve even married him while they were dating. “Every relationship I’ve ever been in, I thought that was it. I’ve never like casually—maybe one or two, okay, I’m not giving everyone that due. I’ve never really been the most casual person,” she said.

We were together for years, that was my first [love],” she said of Pattinson, calling him “the best” even now.
