What You Can Do to Help Prevent Bacterial Vaginosis, According to Ob-Gyns

Editor’s Note: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) can affect anyone with a vagina, but for this article, we included sources who generally referred to these people as women.

As you may know, the vagina naturally houses different types of bacteria. When that balance and the vaginal ecosystem get thrown off or altered, issues can occur. Such is the case with a vaginal infection called bacterial vaginosis (BV), which, according to the CDC, is considered the most common vaginal condition in women age 15-44.

As Jonathan Schaffir, MD, a board-certified ob-gyn at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, explained, BV is considered an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina. The hallmarks of BV typically include thin, white-to-gray discharge with a “fishy” odor.

Dr. Schaffir noted that the bacteria that can cause symptoms of BV may be in the vagina normally, but the “good bacteria” in the vagina usually suppress this “bad bacteria” and help prevent it from growing out of control. “What tips that scale and makes that [bacterial] imbalance occur is not well understood, and it’s also really unclear why some women never get it [BV] and some of them get it over and over again,” he said.

According to the CDC, “there are no known best ways to prevent” BV because the ways in which the condition spreads aren’t fully understood.

However, there are some things you can do to help maintain a healthy vaginal environment and potentially help reduce the chances of an imbalance of bacteria from occurring. Keep scrolling for a few helpful tips on BV prevention from ob-gyns, plus more info on this common vaginal infection.

Remember, if you think you have bacterial vaginosis or have any other concerns, check in with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.

Don’t Douche or Internally Wash the Vagina

“The biggest rule of thumb is no douching or washing inside the vaginal canal,” said Tamika K. Cross, MD, FACOG, a board-certified ob-gyn and the resident ob-gyn of SweetSpot Labs.

Because the vagina is a self-cleaning organ, Dr. Cross explained, interfering with its natural process can disrupt the bacteria balance in the vagina. While the vagina should do its own thing in the cleansing department, Dr. Cross said it is safe to cleanse the vulva, or the external genital area, but that heavily fragranced products should be avoided to help prevent irritation and disruption of the pH balance of vulvar skin.

“Instead, opt for a gentle, pH-balanced wash,” she said.

Wipe From Front to Back

In addition to maintaining the good bacteria that live in the vagina, Dr. Schaffir said to avoid overwhelming the vagina with “bacteria from the outside — some of which could come from areas towards the rectum.”

Wiping the vagina from front to back after using the bathroom can help with this. According to the Mayo Clinic, wiping from front to back can also help reduce your risk of developing a UTI.

Wear Properly Fitting, Breathable Underwear

Dr. Schaffir mentioned that, when it comes to underwear and vaginal health, it’s ideal to avoid a persistently wet environment. He added that tight-fitting underwear may also pull bacteria into the vaginal opening and hold moisture against the vaginal area, which could create “more of an environment for bacteria to thrive.”

So what type of underwear should you choose? Dr. Cross said natural fabrics, like cotton, tend to be more breathable than synthetics. “This can help reduce bacterial growth and, in turn, minimize the risk of developing BV.”

What You Should Know About Bacterial Vaginosis and Sex

While Dr. Schaffir noted that BV is not a sexually transmitted infection, he did say it’s more common in people with vaginas who have multiple sexual partners or who have sex frequently. That said, it can also occur in those who aren’t sexually active.

The Cleveland Clinic and the CDC both note that limiting your sexual partners and using latex condoms may help reduce the risk of BV. As a reminder, according to Planned Parenthood, condoms also help prevent pregnancy and the contraction of STDs.

Can’t use latex condoms? Dr. Cross said if latex causes you irritation, choose a nonlatex alternative. “Just know that nonlatex options may be more prone to breakage, so before you switch, make sure you’ve eliminated other potential causes of irritation — it could be the lubrication on the latex condom or a lack of lubrication.”

Priyanka Chopra on How She & Nick Jonas Made Their Long-Distance Marriage Work During This ‘Tough’ Year Apart

Priyanka Chopra opened up on InStyle‘s Ladies First With Laura Brown podcast about how tough her year in London has been, where she has been shooting the upcoming series Citadel, and how she and her husband Nick Jonas coped with being long distance—and in different continents—during the COVID pandemic.

“This year has been really tough,” Chopra started. “It was really, really tough to be away from home for an entire year, especially at a time where you can’t travel to see your family. Just the uncertainty of my mom and my brother being in India, my husband being in America, while I was in the U.K., it was just so much uncertainty, and that, to me, was terrifying, of not being able to just get on a flight and travel just in case something went wrong or something happened. But thankfully everyone was okay. And COVID has been really rough on a lot of people, but we’ve been all right. So what I think what it really taught me was a little bit of gratitude but I’ve had rock bottom moments, I know, while I was in the U.K. Even going for a walk seemed so dreary sometimes because all the restaurants would be closed and all the streets were closed. It felt so apocalyptic. And I was just alone at home.”

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Chopra added that she and Jonas were able to see each other, but precautions had to be taken. “We didn’t have a dramatic separation but because he was in and out, we had to be really careful,” she said. “He had to quarantine; I had to quarantine whenever we saw each other at that time, and that’s usually not conducive to a production schedule because you don’t really have much time. You have like, two days off. So it was all really tricky but we managed. He flew out a bunch of times; I flew down a couple times. My mom came and stayed with me for almost five months, which was really nice.”

Generally, “we talk all the time,” Chopra said of her husband. “We know each other’s hearts. We prioritize each other in everything that we do. We’ve had individual careers, and we’re both very clear about never interfering in each other’s professional lives because we’re always partners and assets. We’ll have an opinion on each other’s thing; we’ll be each other’s champions, but those decisions are predominately for both of us to take because we’ve built our careers by ourselves for such a long time. But I think at the same time, it’s really important to keep a check on the other person’s heart and how they’re feeling and prioritizing that and I have to say, my husband’s amazing at doing that. Like I said, this year was hard for me being in London. He would just drop everything, come in for even like, a day, just have dinner with me, and then fly back. Stuff like that, you just have to prioritize each other and then everything feels right.”

Chopra said Jonas is the first person she calls. When they’re apart, they do “a little bit of both [texting and talking on the phone ]. I think when you’re apart, it’s really important to keep each other posted on what you’re doing, whether the other person is available or not.”

Rihanna Wore a Stunning Orange One-Shoulder Dress to Celebrate Barbados Becoming a Republic

Barbados has cut its political and ceremonial ties with the United Kingdom and celebrated its status as a new republic last night during its presidential inauguration ceremony. Barbados native Rihanna flew in to be part of the historic moment, and she dressed in a silk, one-shoulder orange dress by Bottega Veneta worthy of the occasion.

The singer was named a national hero by the country’s Prime Minister Mia Mottley during the ceremony. While Barbados remains in the Commonwealth organization of nations, per The Hollywood Reporter, Queen Elizabeth II is no longer its head of state.

In a clip of Rihanna receiving the honor, Mottley told her, “On behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people, we therefore present to you, the designee, for national hero of Barbados, ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty. May you continue to shine like a diamond and continue to bring honor to your nation by your words, by your actions, and to do credit wherever you shall go.”

The Hollywood Reporter noted that Rihanna is the second woman to receive the country’s national hero honor and the 11th person overall. She can now use the title the Right Honorable in front of her name.

Rihanna was declared a billionaire by Forbes earlier this year with a net worth of $1.7 billion. Rihanna candidly spoke to Extra’s Rachel Lindsay in September about why the title frightens her a bit.

“It’s scary,” Rihanna said. “I do think about it all the time. I make it a point to think about it, because I… get scared when, you know, the pedestal comes into play and we’ll put you up there and they keep wanting to put you up there… I’m like, ‘No, I want to be on the ground.’ I want to feel my feet on the ground because I know it’s not going to be a fall at all if anything, right?… I don’t want to be this icon… I want to remember who I am.”

Lindsay told her, “I know you said you do’’t want to be like put up on this pedestal, but as a Black woman doing your thing, you know, your billionaire status—people are watching, and what does it make you feel like to know that young girls are looking at you and saying, ‘I can do that, too!’”

“I think that is what makes it worth it,” Rihanna said. “That’s what I want. That’s what I worked for. I want to be able to share my inspiration, I want to be able to be an inspiration, and I want to be inspired by even my fans, people who look up to me, I look up to them. And it’s mutual respect that I have because I wouldn’t be here without them.”

E! got some details on Thanksgiving itself, which a very smitten Bennifer spent in Los Angeles.

“Jennifer was very excited to come home and spend Thanksgiving with Ben,” a source close to Lopez told the outlet. “[Ben’s] mom joined them and they had a lot of low-key family time with both of their families together.”

Lopez has 13-year-old twins, Max and Emme, with ex-husband Marc Anthony, while Affleck has 15-year-old Violet, 12-year-old Seraphina, and 9-year-old Samuel with ex-wife Jennifer Garner.

Lopez is dedicated to making this holiday season very special for all involved.

“Jennifer enjoys the holidays and this was her first since she and Ben have been back together,” the source said. “She wanted to make it special for him and for the kids and to start new traditions.” The source also said of Lopez and Affleck: “They are stronger than ever and very much in love.”

The couple made their love for each other very clear for paparazzi, who captured them on two separate occasion showing PDA.

On Saturday, the two were spotted holding hands while heading to a music studio together. Lopez wore a black turtleneck with dark jeans. Affleck complemented her in a burgundy T-shirt, tan slacks, and a black blazer.

Virgil Abloh’s Fashion Legacy in Pictures

Photography by Sean Zanni/Patrick McMullan via Getty Images

To celebrate the legacy of the Off-White and Louis Vuitton menswear creative director, FASHION is looking back at some of Virgil Abloh’s best works.

Is there ever a “right” thing to say when someone passes?

A brief Google search will tell you to say things like “I’m so sorry for your loss” and “sending my deepest sympathies.” Still, more often than not, the recipients of the bad news are rendered speechless, knowing that no amount of words, calls or emojis will ever be able to encapsulate the wonderful person that has suddenly left. I mean, what is there to say?

Such is the world’s reaction at the sudden passing of designer extraordinaire Virgil Abloh, who at only 41 died of a rare form of cancer. Because his illness was kept secret, the news was especially shocking as he was seen only a few months ago at the Met Gala in September, looking just as cool as ever. But as the hours have passed since the news broke on Sunday, the initial sorrowful speechlessness has since transformed into an outpouring of love and support, with emotional goodbyes and tributes from everyone from Hailey Bieber to Kanye West.

As the public’s grief has rightfully taken over social media, similar words continue to appear: powerful, barrier-breaking and revolutionary. And they’re right. As the creative genius behind Off-White and Louis Vuitton’s menswear line, Virgil Abloh and his works will be remembered for reshaping luxury fashion. He elevated and expanded streetwear, exemplified by the success of his own brand. He pushed the boundaries of gender norms and questioned so-called “men’s staples” with his work at the French design house. And he paved the way for so many other BIPOC creatives within the industry.

While it’s a cliché to say, even though Virgil Abloh is gone, he will not be forgotten. His spirit will forever live in the ground-breaking work he shared with the world. FASHION has rounded up a few of the designer’s best works to celebrate his life and legacy.

Watch 15-Year-Old Kamila Valieva’s Record-Breaking Figure Skating Programs From the Rostelecom Cup

On Nov. 26, Kamila Valieva began the 2021 Rostelecom Cup, the last 2021–22 ISU Grand Prix event ahead of next month’s finals, with the highest-scoring short program (87.42) in women’s figure skating history — according to NBC Sports, this technically means since 2018 due to scoring changes. Then, the next day, she tallied the highest free skate (185.29), resulting in the highest total score (272.71). The 15-year-old subsequently won gold. What’s even more impressive is that she had already set the latter two records earlier in the season, and this was simply her beating her own marks on the ice.

Valieva set the world records for the women’s free program (174.31) and total score (249.24) at October’s CS Finlandia Trophy 2021, where she also won gold in her international senior debut, The Skating Times reported. Then, at Skate Canada a few weeks later, she bested those scores in her first Grand Prix as a senior and claimed the title — she received marks of 180.89 for her free skate and a combined total of 265.08, becoming the first woman skater to earn over 250 points total. It was only fitting that she continued to raise the bar for those records at the Rostelecom Cup this past weekend, in addition to solidifying a new short program record.

Ahead, check out Valieva’s history-making short program and free skate from the 2021 Rostelecom Cup. They feature graceful lines and arms-over-head jumps full of amplitude. You’ll find some photos, too, from the competition. Valieva is a true front runner for the Beijing Olympics this winter, so keep your eyes peeled.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas Dressed to Stand Out at British Fashion Awards Date Night

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas stepped out for their first big red carpet date night of the holiday season. The two posed alongside each other at the British Fashion Awards in London. Chopra went full statement look, wearing a floral pantsuit, while Jonas wore a black suit with a red top. The couple had a cute moment on the red carpet but by no means were showing Bennifer-level PDA.

Their appearance comes after Chopra sparked breakup rumors earlier this month after fans noticed that she removed her and Jonas’ last name from her social media profiles and just listed her name as “Priyanka.” Unverified celebrity gossip outlet DeuxMoi added fuel to the fire when it posted about there allegedly being “strain” in their relationship.

Chopra moved to dispel the rumors by leaving a thirsty comment on Jonas’ workout video on Instagram last week. She liked the post and commented, “Damn! I just died in your arms… 😍 🥵 ❤️”

Both Chopra and Jonas additionally reiterated how devoted they are to each other in their matching Thanksgiving posts, featuring them cuddling in London. “Happy thanksgiving everyone! Grateful for you @priyankachopra ❤️,” Jonas captioned his.

Chopra wrote in her post, “So much to be grateful for. Friends, family.. I love you @nickjonas ❤️✨ happy thanksgiving to everyone celebrating 🥳”

Chopra spoke to ELLE UK earlier this year about how they handle being long distance since they are often separated for their various projects.

“We see each other every three weeks,” she explained. “Wherever we are in the world, we fly to each other at least once a month for a couple of days. It was our rule when we first got married. Otherwise we’d never see each other. Our teams also had to get married!”

“They have to talk to each other like, ‘I am scheduling her here. No, we can’t do it… This is when we’re free… We have to move this,’” she continued. “It’s like a big marriage. It’s not just us but our families and teams, too.”

Everything You Need To Know About Tubing Mascaras

jil sander backstage milan fashion week spring summer 2022

Rosdiana CiaravoloGetty Images

Lush lashes have always been an icon’s most essential asset: think Elizabeth Taylor’s inky Cleopatra wings, Twiggy’s exclamation points, even Minnie Mouse’s flirty spikes. While a new brush shape launches almost monthly, the basic mascara recipe (wax plus pigment) has remained about the same since Thomas Williams mixed coal dust into Vaseline for his sister Mabel (and launched Maybelline) in 1913.

What Is Tubing Mascara?

Say hello to tubing: the not-so-pretty word that may be one of the more exciting terms ever to be embossed on a mascara label. “Instead of the traditional oils and waxes used in mascaras, tubing formulas use a flexible polymer that is an excellent film former,” says cosmetics consultant and chemist Nick Morante. Tubing mascara goes on slightly wetter than regular versions; when it dries, the lacquer shrink-wraps around each lash, giving “360-degree coverage,” according to makeup artist Troy Surratt. As more of the polymer is brushed on, the tube builds up and out, like the structure of an icicle or a stalactite, adding millimeters to even the shortest of hairs.

“It’s like you’re actually stretching out the lashes. You can keep building length at the end,” says Stila makeup artist Sarah Lucero. “It gives you a precise, pristine, retouched look.”

Is Tubing Mascara Easy To Remove?

Not only does the emulsion of tubing mascara create a smooth, shiny surface, but it’s also water soluble, so while normal sweat and tears won’t disturb it, several splashes of H2O will cause the tubes to swell and loosen their grip on lashes, easily rinsing off. The smudge-prone (eye rubbers, those with oily skin, or those who live in a humid climate) love that the tubes are immune to smearing; sensitive types with easily irritated eyes or fragile lashes appreciate the formula’s easy-off aspect.

Is Tubing Mascara Bad For You?

So 10 years after tubing first hit the U.S., why doesn’t it have more fans? “Some women got a little freaked out by the sight of all the tubes rinsing off into the sink. They were worried that they were losing lashes,” Surratt says. And although tubing polymers allow you to add length to each lash, they don’t dramatically increase plumpness. Now companies such as Blinc and L’Oréal cater to those who want showgirl style results—lashes that look long and full—with a two-step approach. Their tubing primers provide a creamy base coat of moisturizing ceramides and panthenol plus thickening pigments. In addition to pumping up the volume, “the primer replenishes lashes and ensures an even mascara application,” says Roseanne Fama, head of L’Oréal’s Cosmetic Product Development.

Which Tubing Mascara Should I Get?

The good news is that more people are getting comfortable with the idea of tubing mascaras, which means there are more options on the market now. Whether you’re into a drugstore bestseller or a luxe high-end formula, here are 12 incredible tubing mascaras that will make you toss out your older versions.

Virgil Abloh Invited Everyone In

style points

Style Points is a weekly column about how fashion intersects with the wider world.

Back in the pre-Instagram days of 2009, the street-style photographer Tommy Ton snapped a photo of Virgil Abloh, Kanye West, and a group of their friends outside Paris Fashion Week. Dressed to the nines, they all looked like PFW habitués, but as Abloh later recalled, they couldn’t even get into a Louis Vuitton show at the time.

Almost a decade after that, that same crew would reunite at Abloh’s 2018 debut as Louis Vuitton’s artistic director of menswear, an appointment that made him the first African-American to hold that position at a French luxury brand. The symbolism was almost too on the nose: he’d gone from peacocking outside a show venue to unveiling his vision inside it. The kids hanging around the show entrance had become the ultimate insiders, and Abloh wanted to help the next generation find its way, too. He was a lifeline for young Black creatives in particular, mentoring designers like Samuel Ross of A-COLD-WALL* and creating a scholarship program for Black fashion students last year.

While many people who break down fashion’s gate focus on bolting it shut to new entrants, Abloh wanted everyone to feel like they were sitting front row. He invited 3,000 students to attend that aforementioned Vuitton show. As he told Women’s Wear Daily then, “I’m all about democracy. If some kid shows up, flew from New Jersey to just be around, let’s get him a seat.” His collection included some longtime friends as models, wending their way down his The Wiz-inspired runway. “You can do it too,” he posted on Instagram at the time, a message that might boil down to his personal philosophy.

That kind of generosity is rare in this industry, but the designer, who tragically passed away yesterday at only 41, found his way into it through scrappier means than most. A Midwestern kid of Ghanian immigrant parents, he didn’t come up through the traditional channels, namely fashion school followed by an apprenticeship at a brand. Instead, he did things his way. At his first label, Pyrex Vision, he screen-printed onto dead stock Ralph Lauren Rugby pieces, engaging in the kind of upcycling and re-appropriating that now feels commonplace but at the time was still controversial. After founding his Dadaist, quote-happy brand Off-White in 2013, he threw himself into unlikely collaborations with everyone from Ikea to Evian and referenced inspirations like Steve Jobs, Mies van der Rohe and Michael Jordan—blurring the boundaries between what was and wasn’t “fashion.” Maybe everything could be fashion?

When I interviewed him for our September issue last year, he told me he always remained mindful of “the real world.” After all, “that’s what I based my fashion career on. The everyday person who can’t afford to spend $60 for a T-shirt. That’s also the fashion industry.” In that same interview, he also said had no plans to slow down. I did not know at that time that he was privately battling a rare form of cancer. We talked about the changing tides of fashion amid the pandemic and how he was navigating them, and how much we both missed clocking people’s fashion statements out in the world. In that interview, he remained confident that disruption would come from those who had once been like him, an enthusiastic newbie trying to talk his way into a show: “The younger generation has the exact answer. It’s always the intern in the office who has the good ideas.”

Even though he’d achieved so much at barely 40, he didn’t seem to consider himself part of the Establishment, somewhat heartbreakingly so. “In my mind, I haven’t done any work yet,” he said then. “I’ve just sort of made a case for why my point of view is valid.” Those who looked up to him would argue he did far more than that.

Canadian-born Designer Paolina Russo is Creating a New Kind of Sportswear

Photography by Aidan Zamiri, courtesy of Paolina Russo

Get to know Paolina Russo, the young designer who uses upcycled and unconventional materials to create avant-garde sportswear.

What is the inspiration behind your unique aesthetic?

“The most significant influences on my work are definitely my upbringing and growing up in Markham, Ontario. There’s a massive craft community there, but at the same time, there’s this huge sports culture — everyone plays Timbits soccer! I always try to find the point of intersection for those two influences in my work — so using sports gear but then bringing in elements of knitwear.”

How did you first get into using upcycled materials?

“My mom has never thrown anything away, including any of the sports equipment we had growing up. The summer before my final year at Central Saint Martins, I went home; I felt really nostalgic as I sorted through our old stuff. I felt that every object had a story and feeling behind it, and I wanted to honour that. So I started taking apart a lot of my old sports equipment and creating forms with it. I took my soccer sneakers apart and draped them until they reminded me of a corset. It created an armoured look, and that’s what ignited the upcycling in my work.”

What was the best lesson you learned from creative director John Galliano when you interned at Maison Margiela?

“I think that the main thing I learned from him was his ability to stay authentic to the story and vision of each collection: Every season had its own concept, whether people recognized it or not. As a designer, he always remained faithful to it and ensured that the rest of his team was also committed to the narrative and the women we were designing it for. And I carry that with me when I go about creating my own collections.”

What surprised you most about your experience collaborating with Adidas on a capsule collection in 2019 and another in 2020?

“It was such a great learning opportunity to be in a full fledged operating system surrounded by these amazing resources, designers, product developers and people. I’m grateful that they trusted me with so much of the creative direction and that the collections could truly be my vision, even though I was a young student with very limited experience in the field.”

How would you describe “illusion knitting,” and how did you first discover it?

“Illusion knitting is a technique that creates a lenticular-like fabric similar to a holograph: When the material moves, a different image is revealed. It’s a process usually done by hand, but it’s very strenuous. I really liked how it looked, but I felt like there could be a way to make the product more detailed and the process faster. So I started working with these computerized knitting machines and developed programs that have the same effect but are much faster. Illusion knitting has definitely become a staple within my brand.”

Fashion Designer Virgil Abloh Dies at 41 After Private Battle With Cancer

On Sunday, November 28, it was announced that Off White’s chief executive officer and founder Virgil Abloh had passed away after a long, private battle with cancer at the age of 41. A tweet from the LVMH account shared a photo of Alboh and a statement from CEO of LVMH Bernard Arnault on his death.

“LVMH, Louis Vuitton and Off White are devastated to announce the passing of Virgil Abloh, on Sunday, November 28th, of cancer, which he had been battling privately for several years,” wrote Arnault. “We are all shocked after this terrible news. Virgil was not only a genius designer, a visionary, he was also a man with a beautiful soul and great wisdom. The LVMH family joins me in this moment of great sorrow, and we are all thinking of his loved ones after the passing of their husband, their father, their brother or their friend.”

Soon after, a statement was posted to his Instagram page, reading, “We are devastated to announce the passing of our beloved Virgil Abloh, a fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife Shannon Abloh, his children Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh, his sister Edwina Abloh, his parents Nee and Eunice Abloh, and numerous dear friends and colleagues.”

Abloh was born in Rockford, Illinois on September 30, 1980. His parents were from Ghana, and his mother was a tailor. His undergrad degree was actually in civil engineering and he went on to study architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology for his master’s. His interest in fashion began while at IIT. In 2009, he graduated and went to work with Kanye West as an intern at Fendi, which eventually led to other opportunities: he art directed the 2011 Jay-Z/West album Watch the Throne and he was noticed by Louis Vuitton CEO Michael Burke. Abloh launched his first brand, Pyrex Vision, in 2012, before moving on to Off White.

According to the statement on his Instagram page, Abloh had a rare, aggressive form of cancer called cardiac angiosarcoma and was diagnosed in 2019.

It continued to say, “Through it all, his work ethic, infinite curiosity, and optimism never wavered. Virgil was driven by his dedication to his craft and to his mission to open doors for others and create pathways for greater equality in art and design. He often said, ‘Everything I do is for the 17-year-old version of myself.’”

This Basic Exercise Is Guaranteed to Make Your Butt and Hamstrings Sore

Two plus size women exercising in Central Park, New York during a beautiful day.

Want to work your legs and butt but don’t have any weights? Find a step, box, bench, or sturdy chair and learn how to do a step-up. This exercise combines the action of the lunge with stepping upward, like climbing stairs, to really target your butt, quads, and upper hamstrings. We’ve broken down this step-up exercise into three variations so you can find the version that works best for your level of fitness.

If you want to make this move harder, hold a dumbbell or a kettlebell in each hand, and do dumbbell step-ups. You can also do variations where you do multiple reps on one leg at a time to really target your glutes, quads, and hamstrings. Aside from a lower-body-burn, this is also a great cardio exercise!

How to Do a Step-Up

A step-up is a basic exercise you can do at the gym, at home, or even outside to strengthen your legs and butt. As long as you have access to a sturdy step, box, bench, or chair, you can do this lower-body, strength-training exercise. Aside from targeting your leg and butt muscles, this is perfect for getting your heart rate up, too, so you can do it as part of your warmup. If you’re new to this exercise, step on something low, then work your way to something higher. This exercise requires balance, so focus on keeping your core strong for stability.

Step-Up Exercise: Beginner

Before you start, find a step, chair, box, or bench that when you place your foot on it, your knee bends to a 90-degree angle. The weight benches or plyo boxes are often the right height, but a dining room chair can work too for an at-home strength-training session. If this seems too high, start with a lower step or box.

  • To start, place your entire right foot onto the step, chair, box, or bench. Press through your right heel as you step onto the bench, bringing your left foot to meet your left so you are standing on the bench.
  • Return to the starting position by stepping down with the right foot, then the left so both feet are on the floor.
  • Complete 15 steps leading with the left foot, then repeat another 15 steps leading with your left foot. Do three sets.

Step-Up Exercise: Intermediate

This is a toe-tap variation that will challenge your balance and work your glutes even more. This version works best with a shorter weight bench or a coffee table rather than a chair — prepare to feel the burn!

  • Start by stepping onto the bench with your right foot.
  • Straighten your right leg to stand on the bench while lifting your left leg, bending your knee up, so the hip and knee are both at 90-degree angles (shown in the photo above).
  • Keeping your right foot on the bench, bend your right knee as you lower your left foot to tap the floor with your left toes without putting all your weight into your left foot. This completes one rep.
  • Without stopping, press through your right heel as you straighten your right knee to stand with both feet on the bench. Your right glute should be engaged for the entire set of reps. That’s why it burns!
  • Repeat for 15 reps on each leg. Do three sets.

Step-Up Exercise: Advanced

You’ll need a pair of dumbbells or kettlebells for this variation. Start with something lightweight (three to eight pounds), then increase to heavier weights (10 to 20 pounds).

  • Try the beginner variation explained above while holding dumbbells — starting with five-pound weights in each hand and working up to 20-pound dumbbells. If you’re ready for an extra challenge, try the toe-tap version.
  • Repeat for 15 reps on each leg. Do three sets.

William and Kate Will Probably Not Stay With Meghan Markle and Harry On U.S. Tour

Royal expert Jonathan Sacerdoti told US Magazine that it is unlikely that Prince William and Duchess Kate will be staying with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in California on their upcoming trip to the United States. William’s environmental initiative The Earthshot Prize will be holding its second annual award ceremony in America in 2022 and it will be the first time the royal couple has visited the country since 2014.

“It’s like so many of these things — it’s a sort of lose-lose situation,” Sacerdoti claimed. “If they get invited and they decline, it seems petty and nasty. And if they don’t get invited, it seems petty and nasty from the other side. And if they do accept such an invitation and something goes terribly wrong, that seems like a bad idea. I can’t quite see how this would work.”

Prince Harry and Markle have set up a home for themselves with their two-year-old son Archie and five-month-old daughter Lilibet in Montecito, where they recently celebrated their second Thanksgiving in the U.S.

“I love to cook,” Markle told Ellen DeGeneres during an interview shortly before the holiday. “We’ll be home and just sort of relax and settle in. It’s our second Thanksgiving at home in California. It’ll be nice, it’ll be really nice.”

The couple left their roles as senior members of the royal family in March of 2020, revealing that Markle had experienced a lot of harassment from the press and disapproval from the family. This decision was supposedly not well-received by William and Kate, either, though royal expert Stewart Pearce claims that the foursome have been trying to repair the relationship.

“I know that the four are talking with one another and they’re talking by Zoom [and by] FaceTime,” he told US.

Finding Freedom author Omid Scobie told Entertainment Tonight in September that things haven’t actually progressed that much.

“The relationship between Harry and William is still very much one of distance,” Scobie said. “I don’t just mean physical [distance], across the Atlantic, but they are not talking that much, and that is exactly how sources close to William have put it.”

Scobie added that they still find a way to come together over larger issues, like the death of Prince Philip in April of this year. Both appeared at his funeral, though Markle could not travel as she was far along in her pregnancy at the time.

“They are very different men. And I think that William has certainly become someone who is really living his life for the crown, for the institution,” Scobie said. “Harry has really sort of gone completely in the opposite direction.”

Visionary Designer Virgil Abloh Dies at 41 After Private Battle With Cancer

He paved the way for other non-fashion-schooled creatives to be seen and heard in the upper echelons of the luxury business.

Virgil Abloh, who died Sunday of a rare form of cancer at age 41, didn’t come from the fashion world. So he never bothered to fit in.

Instead, he created his own system — one that didn’t include going to fashion school and peddling fancy clothes to department stores.

Abloh was an architect and part of a DJ collective that had a small clothing line. He was tight with hip-hop artists Kanye West and Travis Scott — fellow creatives who dressed like him in sneakers, tees and cargo jackets. He and West did an internship at Fendi in 2009 and three years later, recognizing that a new generation were mixing streetwear with luxury labels, Abloh founded Off-White. The upscale casual wear bearing graphic black and white stripes and arrows took off, appealing to well-funded international students and tech entrepreneurs who were re-writing the rules on corporate dressing. Abloh preferred concept stores to traditional retail and in the summer of 2018, recreated his Chicago studio at the Ssense flagship in Montreal.

“Virgil was the first to merge music, architecture, culture, art and fashion,” comments George Antonopoulos, creative and fashion director of FASHION. “He created a lifestyle, not just a label. I think that’s what gave Off-White so much clout. He was also the king of collabs before collabs were king, finding success with IKEA, Nike, Mercedes-Benz and Rimowa.”

“Everything Virgil touches, people are interested in,” Christopher Casuga told The Globe and Mail in 2019. Casuga and his wife Lia were the first in Canada to carry Off-White at their CNTRBND boutique in Toronto. In 2016, Abloh entrusted the duo to open one of his first Off-White stores on Yorkville Avenue. Casuga and Abloh had been close friends ever since meeting at a party in Chicago in the late ’90s, and were part of a circle that included West, Scott, creative director Heron Preston and Givenchy designer Matthew Williams. “This is before they became who they are today,” Casuga told The Globe, recalling an event held at a Toronto nightclub that he calls, “one of most epic parties in Toronto ever. Virgil was DJing, Kanye was literally swinging off the ceiling.”

Abloh was named artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear in 2018, making him one of the few black designers to lead a major French fashion house. The casting for his debut Vuitton runway show was heavily BIPOC and included several rapper friends, as if he were signalling the traditional fashion world that he was setting a new agenda. Which he did.

Abloh paved the way for other non-fashion-schooled creatives to be seen and heard in the upper echelons of the luxury business. Fittingly, he was named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential in 2018. Abloh was a visionary and a disruptor. But he was a husband, son, father and friend too. And that is the greatest loss of all.

Zendaya and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Costar J.B. Smoove Called Them the ‘Most Adorable Couple’

Comedian J.B. Smoove is co-star to Zendaya and Tom Holland in the Spider-Man films, so he’s been able to observe their relationship first hand. And he’s a fan. Smoove and his wife Shahidah Omar attended the American Music Awards at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles last weekend; while on the red carpet he told ET‘s Cassie DiLaura “Oh, I love those two. I love them so much.”

He added that they were “the most adorable couple ever in the history of adorableness.”

Then Smoove offered a little romantic advice, as an older married man.

“Have time for love but have time for laughter,” he said. “Laughter. Smiles. Stress-free lifestyle, you know. Find out about each other and find some way to keep watering that seed and keep growing and growing.”

That does sound like something a comedian would suggest, but it works for anyone. Rumors that Zendaya and Tom Holland were dating have been circulating since 2017, when they went on their Spider-Man press tour. This summer, Page Six shared photos of them kissing in a car at a red light in Los Angeles close to Zendaya’s mother’s house, who they visited together. Zendaya, at least, regrets that their relationship is no longer so private.

In an interview with GQ, Zendaya said, “The equal sentiment [we both share] is just that when you really love and care about somebody, some moments or things, you wish were your own… I think loving someone is a sacred thing and a special thing and something that you want to deal with and go through and experience and enjoy amongst the two people that love each other.”

People knowing about their relationship also leaves them open to comments about it, like when Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya’s co-star in Dune, teased her about Holland. While promoting their film, they answered questions about each other for a Buzzfeed quiz. One question was who their biggest celebrity crush is.

“Easy, Tom Holland,” Chalamet answered for Zendaya, making her giggle. She and Holland are, in fact, pretty adorable.

Build Your Glutes With 19 Trainer-Approved Strength Exercises

One common misconception when it comes to getting a bigger butt is that you should be doing squats every time you work your lower body. The truth is, squats are a quad-dominant exercise, meaning that the movement mainly targets your quadriceps. Your glutes get some work, but come secondary to your quads in this move.

If you’re trying to get a bigger butt, you’re going to have focus on building your glute muscles and doing exercises that target the glutes specifically, like hip thrusts and lunges, just to name a few. You’ll also more than likely have to eat in a caloric surplus to help you build and maintain your muscle mass, with plenty of protein included in your diet. To help you get started on the exercise side of things, we’ve rounded up some of the best exercises you can do to improve your glute strength, and as a result, get a bigger butt.

Priyanka Chopra Share Cuddly Family Photo With Nick Jonas

Jonas shared the same first image on his Instagram, writing, “Happy thanksgiving everyone! Grateful for you @priyankachopra,” adding a heart emoji. Chopra recently spoke at Netflix’s Jonas Brothers Family Roast, poking fun at the age gap between herself and her husband and also the disparity in their social media profiles. Even before becoming a well-known figure in the U.S., she was the star of Bollywood and has over 70 million followers on Instagram to 31 million—nothing to sneeze at , but his wife does have the upper hand there.

“He showed me how to use TikTok, for example, you know, and I showed him what a successful acting career looks like,” she joked. “I’m from India, a country rich in culture, in music, in entertainment, so clearly the Jonas Brothers didn’t make it over there.”

Recently, Chopra changed her Instagram name from Priyanka Chopra Jonas back to simply “Priyanka,” leading to speculation that the couple might be on the outs. It looks like everything is cozy and comfortable.
