I’ve Always Had Trouble Sleeping, Until I Tried This Combination of Melatonin and CBD

Uleva Sleep Capsules

Ever since college, many of my dreams have been anything but sweet. Though my body requires eight to nine hours of shut-eye for me to feel even remotely human the next day, I often struggle to get that because of recurring nightmares brought on by my generalized anxiety disorder. Instead of counting sheep, I’m running through mental checklists and listening to my heart race.

Knowing how important it is to get a good night’s sleep, I began the fight for my eight hours. I tried deep breathing and meditation, as well as not eating three hours before bed and avoiding caffeine after 3 p.m. I discovered that over-the-counter sleep aids are not my thing — they just left me feeling groggy and hungover the next morning. Nothing was working.

Melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating the body’s circadian rhythm, is often touted as the go-to supplement for sleep. However, I found myself waking up like clockwork about four hours after I’d taken it. CBD, on the other hand — which is one of my go-tos for stress relief — didn’t necessarily cut it on its own, either. And while I was a fan of small doses of THC while living in Colorado, my new home state of Florida hasn’t legalized weed, which forced me to examine other options in my sleep-improvement search.

Enter: Uleva Sleep ($30), which blends the circadian-regulating effects of melatonin with the balancing effects of CBD. It’s a one-two punch for restless nights that can help you fall asleep and stay asleep. And because it comes in a convenient capsule, you don’t have to worry about messy oil tinctures. Each capsule contains 10 mg of CBD and 3 mg of melatonin, a dose I’ve found quite effective for warding off the monsters that keep me up at night.

Though research is limited, CBD may assist in promoting sleep not only by easing stress but also because it interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which may help to regulate sleep cycles. While CBD is one of the trendiest supplements on the market, it’s important to remember that it isn’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration — meaning, you have to make sure any products you buy are tested for purity and that the doses listed on the label are accurate. Uleva’s hemp is grown without pesticides or herbicides, and the brand’s products go through strict third-party testing to comply with the legal standard of no greater than 0.3 percent THC in each serving. Testing results are linked to the QR code on each box, which helped reassure me that this is a product I can trust.

Though at first I was skeptical of taking another melatonin or CBD product — I feel like I’m constantly experimenting with sleep solutions involving the two — I finally tried again. I decided to commit to a week of a clean sleep routine. I went to bed at the same time every night, read before bed to wind down, and kept my room a screen-free zone, along with consistently taking Uleva Sleep about 30 minutes before bedtime.

My results? A near-perfect week of sleep. Call it magic, but after drifting off to dreamland within 30 minutes or so of closing my eyes, I slept all the way through the night, nightmare- and anxiety-free. No midnight wake-ups, no groggy morning after. So if you find yourself searching the pasture for sheep to count, a CBD-melatonin combination may be just what you need to complete your restful nighttime routine.

Why You Should Definitely Eat Dark Chocolate, Even If You’re Trying to Lose Weight

Whether you prefer to use it in place of milk chocolate when baking or like to grab a piece as an afternoon snack, dark chocolate is so much more than just a dessert. Research suggests that the nutrients in dark chocolate may help you feel happier and even lower your risk of heart attack or stroke, among other benefits. And, as it turns out, there might be yet another reason to reach for at-least-70-percent cacao: dark chocolate may also aid in weight loss.

Mackenzie Burgess, RDN, recipe developer at Cheerful Choices, told POPSUGAR that dark chocolate is an ideal dessert because it can help satisfy your cravings while also delivering important antioxidants and minerals. “Some studies have also shown dark chocolate to be beneficial for weight loss, as it may reduce our hunger hormone, known as ghrelin, and boost our satiety,” Burgess said.

However, it’s important to keep serving sizes in mind while indulging in this delicious snack. “While dark chocolate can definitely be a part of a healthy weight-loss plan, be sure to keep the portions in check,” Burgess said, adding that a typical serving should be about one ounce, or roughly the size of your index finger.

Beyond reducing cravings, eating dark chocolate may also help you stay motivated and feeling good about yourself and your progress. “There are studies that show that dark chocolate can positively affect mental health and mood,” explained Abbie Gellman, MS, RD, CDN, a member of the Jenny Craig Science Advisory Board — and that’s important when you’re trying to lose weight.

Gellman added that, although exclusively eating dark chocolate won’t speed up weight loss, it may help you achieve your goals over time. “Eating dark chocolate in small, appropriate portions will not hinder your weight loss and will potentially put your body and mind in the right state to increase your weight loss,” Gellman told POPSUGAR. So grab that square of dark chocolate, and enjoy!

When my legs feel like jelly, I know I did a good workout! But here’s the thing: leg day doesn’t have to take hours at the gym. Even carving out 20 minutes of your day — which is less time than it takes to clean out your inbox — can help you get leaner, stronger legs. Schitt’s Creek Swept the Nominations At Yet Another Award Show

Photography courtesy of CBC

The beloved series earned an impressive 22 nominations, plus more on the other 2021 nominees.

Schitt’s Creek icon Moira Rose once said that awards season is her favourite season — and it seems there was a good reason.

Once again, the beloved Canadian sitcom earned the most nominations at the Canadian Screen Awards, which were announced on March 30. The final season of the series earned an impressive 22 nominations, appearing in just about every category you can imagine. Schitt’s Creek is up for best comedy series and best writing (Dan Levy, for the finale), while Eugene and Dan Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Annie Murphy, Emily Hampshire and Noah Reid all received acting nods — just to name a few.

At this point, the cast and creative team behind Schitt’s Creek are no strangers to accolades. The series swept the comedy categories at last year’s Emmys, winning a record-setting total of nine awards. They even picked up a couple of awards at the Golden Globes earlier this year: O’Hara virtually accepted the best actress statuette and the show was also crowned best comedy series.

Elsewhere on the TV side of the Canadian Screen Awards noms, CBC sitcoms Workin’ Moms and Kim’s Convenience (which is currently in its final season) both received 11 nods each. The two series will also be competing against Baroness Von Sketch Show and Crave hit Letterkenny for best comedy.

In the drama categories, CTV crime drama Cardinal and CBC’s Trickster each earned 15 nominations. Following controversy surrounding director/co-writer Michelle Latimer’s claim to Indigenous identity, the latter was not considered in the best drama category. Instead, Cardinal will be vying for the top prize against CBC legal series Burden of Truth, CTV medical drama Transplant, Global’s suspense series Departure and historical fantasy Vikings.

Over on the movie side of the nominations, Indigenous-led horror film Blood Quantum leads the pack with 10 nods — though it wasn’t represented in the best picture or best director categories. Following closely behind are Deepa Mehta’s drama Funny Boy, which earned nine noms, and Charles Officer’s TIFF-favourite Akilla’s Escape.

The full list of both the 2021 TV and film nominees can be found here. The ninth annual Canadian Screen Awards will take place virtually over seven days, from May 17 to 20, culminating in a live stream presenting some of the event’s biggest awards on May 20 at 8 p.m. ET.

These Are Our 11 Favorite Fitness Trackers of 2021

We like to consider ourselves relatively healthy individuals, but we can admit that sometimes, a little help is appreciated. It can be tough to stick to our goals, and we’re fans of anything that will keep us accountable. Yes, you can schedule your workout into your calendar like a meeting or prep meals in advance, but if you sleep in or a pizza craving hits, well, then, forget about it.

They give us guidance on everything from how many steps we’re taking to how well we’re sleeping through the night. With these on our arms, all those achievements seem that much more attainable. The LVMH Prize 2021 Has Announced its Semi-Finalists

Photography courtesy of Imaxtree.

For the first time, the public can cast a vote.

“This year, the public becomes an Expert of the LVMH Prize” – that’s what the prominent accolade’s press release promised this morning with its announcement of the 20 brands vying for a €300,000 endowment (plus a one-year mentorship program provided by a dedicated LVMH team). In addition to consumers having their say on who will go on to receive the top honour, several new industry names have joined the Committee of Experts for deliberations including Bella Hadid and Vogue China’s newly minted Editor-in-Chief, Margaret Zhang.

And who will we choose from? An eclectic mix of creatives is tapped this year, many boasting a genderless approach to design. Christopher John Rogers – the New York-based talent who took home the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award in 2019 – is in the running, as is French designer Charles de Vilmorin, London’s Saul Nash and Shanghai’s Shuting Qiu.

This year’s LVMH Prize also gives a nod to names-to-know like Cynthia Merhej, who designs under the brand Renaissance Renaissance and is based in Lebanon, and Kika Vargas from Bogota, Colombia. Lukhanyo Mdingi’s eponymous label reps Cape Town, and Nigeria’s Adeju Thompson has made the cut for their line, Lagos Space Programme. The roundup of semi-finalists, who are also competing for the Karl Lagerfeld/Special Jury Prize of €150,000 and a mentorship program, was pulled from a list of candidates from over 110 countries.

2021 also sees the return of the Prize, as last year’s competition was transformed into the creation of a fund to benefit a range of young fashion designers feeling the effects of the emerging pandemic (including Montreal-based Lecavalier, a finalist for the Prize in 2019).

COVID-19 restrictions are cited as the reason for why this 8th edition of the Prize will run as a digital platform from April 6th to April 11th, and the selection of semi-finalists speaks to another prominent issue that continues to affect the fashion world – sustainability. All of the competing brands have an ethos that manifests in the use of recycled/upcycled textiles, artisanal craft techniques, and local production. A worthy lot, no matter who emerges as a winner.

Keen to have your say on who should win this year? Here’s a full list of semi-finalists:

After a Year of Working Out at Home, These Are the 11 Pieces of Equipment I Rely On

Before 2020, I could count on one hand the amount of times I had worked out at home on my own. I felt more motivated in a gym or group setting, and I was sure that without other people, I wouldn’t try as hard. Well, then 2020 happened, and I was very happily proven wrong. I now exclusively work out at home, which I love so much, and I’ve had to buy a few pieces of workout equipment to help me in my endeavors. Well, these are the 11 items I’ve found to be the most useful in my year of at-home fitness.

There are a few staples in this list, like ankle weights and resistance bands, along with some more unique pieces and gadgets that I’d recommend to pretty much anyone. Keep on reading to shop my selects.

I Have Anxiety, and This $65 Essential Oil Kit Has Been a Game Changer

I’ve had an anxiety disorder since middle school and, like many people, the past year took a toll on my mental health and exacerbated my symptoms. I take medication to manage my depression, PTSD, and anxiety, and I found myself needing to increase my daily dose of Valium. I also became terrified of going anywhere without the bottle in my purse because I never knew when I’d need the fast-acting medication to aid me during a panic attack. With my newfound free time during COVID-19, I began to research and try some more natural approaches to managing my anxiety, like meditation and essential oils.

When it was time to try essential oils, I turned to Saje Wellness, the same company that makes an oil blend I’ve used to help soothe migraine pain. They’ve been in business for more than 25 years, their products are formulated using scientific research, and my psychiatrist did some digging and told me it would be safe to use their essential oils, in addition to staying on my prescription medications. So, I ordered the Saje Mindfulness Pocket Farmacy ($65). It comes neatly organized in a small, pretty case with five essential oils in roll-on form. The kit is the perfect size — small enough to stick in my purse and even take in my carry-on bag for flights.

The oils included are called Confidence, Connection, Reflection, Unwind, and Energy. I use all five, but the two that have made the biggest difference for me personally are Reflection and Unwind. Reflection has a grounding effect, which has helped a lot with my concentration and focus. My anxiety and PTSD make it extremely difficult for me to focus. I often work myself up so much that I’m too anxious and agitated to sit down at my desk and complete necessary tasks. I pace around my apartment for up to two hours sometimes and, in the past, the only thing that could get me to sit down and concentrate was taking medication. Thanks to the Reflection oil, I don’t need to use Valium for this purpose as often as I used to.

The second oil that’s helped me the most is Unwind. Its name is pretty self-explanatory — per the instructions, I roll this oil onto my neck at the end of the day when I’ve completed my work and chores and I have some “me time” to read a book, watch a movie, or paint. My anxiety often interferes with my ability to unwind because my mind will already be racing about what needs to be done tomorrow, next week, or even next year. Like Reflection, the Unwind oil has helped me cut back on using medication to cope with these racing thoughts. I feel more present in the moment and can enjoy the act of reading or painting.

Some days are harder than others. When I feel a panic attack coming on, I do still take Valium and propranolol, a beta-blocker that helps lower my heart rate so I don’t experience that terrifying feeling like I’m having a heart attack. And on days when my anxiety or PTSD happen to be more severe than usual, I’m not ashamed to take a prescription medication. But on the average day, the Mindfulness Pocket Farmacy is now my first resort. I’ve been using it for a month and, thus far, it helps more often than not. For a long time, I had a conception that the only two choices were to solely rely on “all-natural” treatments or to only use prescription medications. But, as my psychiatrist and my personal experience confirmed, that’s simply not true.

I’d recommend these essential oils to people who experience anxiety and concentration issues — just make sure to clear it with your doctor first, of course, especially if you’re taking medication.

Montreal Accessory Designer Linsey Myriam Bain on the Beauty of Going Slow

Photography by Kyle Jeffers.

“I want to make good products that people like, and enjoy doing it.”

With over ten years of experience creating bags for a variety of mass market brands, Montreal-based creative Linsey Myriam Bain decided to forge her own path forward with the launch of her eponymous label in 2019. She learned a lot during her tenure as an accessory expert, traveling to factories and gaining insight into consumer expectations; and she’s channeled this knowledge into the creation of unisex pieces that suit all needs and are made with intention.

“I’ve been in the industry for so long,” she says, noting that she started by working in various retail roles, which afforded her the ability to “understand how people relate to product.” While studying fashion design in post-secondary school (she studied art history before that), she also modelled briefly. But in addition to the historically problematic expectations within that aspect of the industry — “At one point, I didn’t know if I was skinny or not,” she recalls — she says the randomness of client meetings didn’t “align with my studies. [And] I saw a greater future for myself with design.”

This epiphany has been to our benefit. Bain’s bags are made in small quantities with fabrics sourced from Canadian suppliers, and feature organic and overstock materials. “I want to make sure that I keep a very small supply chain,” she notes, and says that moving forward she’d love to craft her pieces on-demand as her customer base expands. She’s also tapped into the exciting potential of new textiles, saying that she “would like to work with cactus leather [in the future]. It’s about growing and improving with every collection. I want to make good products that people like, and enjoy doing it.”

Photography by Kyle Jeffers

Given her expertise in the fashion industry, Bain identifies a core issue with sustainable design — it’s affordability — as a point that needs continual addressing and improvement by not only independent makers like herself, but the large-scale businesses that reach consumers at a mass level. “I’m thankful for Stella McCartney, but how many people can actually get clothing that’s made ethically, from the way people are treated to the waste at the factory and [creation of] excess product? How do we make sure that the big retailers — that we still need because there are people who need to shop for inexpensive products — are becoming sustainable?”

In addition to her thoughtful approach for making bags, Bain has committed to locally producing the non-medical face masks her brand began offering last Spring; a new mask drop will come later this week, boasting new colours like khaki and chocolate brown. “The masks were a natural addition,” she says, going on to reveal that making them also gave her the opportunity to be productive and proactive at a time when pushing product didn’t seem altogether important.

bain montreal
Photography by Mallory Lowe

“It was a saving grace. Bags that last, like mine, will always be in a certain price range and I didn’t feel comfortable coming out with new products at the time. It didn’t feel right. At least by making masks, I was doing something useful for me, and for everybody. And it allowed me to be creative.” She shot the initial array of masks in her loft-style living space with local photographer Mallory Lowe, using non-agency models and playing with wigs to emphasize the collection’s range of eye-catching hues. “It’s allowed me to work with people in my community,” she says. Give-back is crucial to her business, and Bain has donated product to organization raffles like that of the Black Theatre Workshop and provided a portion of proceeds from the brand’s sales to initiatives like Hoodstock, an activism-centric group with a seven-point mandate that includes support of the arts and social justice actions.

“There’s so much talent in Montreal, it’s almost ridiculous,” Bain laughs. And the city’s notoriously creative denizens are counted in her circle, including DJ KidCrayola and textile designer Damien Ajavon, who recently appeared on the brand’s feed modelling its bright blue nylon Flat tote — one of the five core styles Bain currently offers.

bain montreal
Photography courtesy of Bain

The assortment also includes a petit crossbody and backpack, as well as a pouch designed with three options for wearing (waist, crossbody or with an evening-style chain). “I’m most proud of this piece,” she says, adding that new styles will appear once she knows if she’s received any award or grant money that she’s applied for this season. “New bags are designed, but I have to see if anything comes from that before moving forward,” she notes.

But Bain has attuned her fan base to the idea that good things come to those who wait, and she’s determined to only augment this sensibility as her label increases in presence — just don’t expect to see more product because there’s more demand. “I would never do four collections in a year,” she says. “That’s one thing I’ve learned about the industry — the pace is too much. I started this brand to have a legacy; to have something that represents my values and my views.” And we’ll be watching for what comes next.

An Ob-Gyn on Why Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Needs to Be Treated Immediately

POPSUGAR recognizes that people of many genders and identities have female sex organs, not just those who are women. For this particular story, we included sources who referred to people with female sex organs as women.

If you’re someone who menstruates, there’s a chance you’ve experienced aggravating cramping during your period, but that’s no reason to completely brush off all pain in your lower abdomen.

Pain in this area — alone or paired with other symptoms — could be a sign that something serious is going on inside your body that needs to be addressed, like pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), an infection of the female reproductive organs that can potentially cause serious complications and even infertility. Consider that yet another reason to always check in with your doctor regularly with questions and concerns.

Ahead, some of the PID warning signs to watch out for, information on how to prevent the condition, and more.

What Is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?

If you’ve never heard of the condition, you may be wondering if PID is particularly common. Harvard Health Publishing notes that approximately one million new cases are diagnosed in the United States each year. It’s also considered “the most common serious infection among young women.”

Sherry Ross, MD, a board-certified ob-gyn and co-founder of URJA Intimates, described it as “a potentially serious infection of the female reproductive tract including the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.”

What Causes Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?

This condition tends to be caused by sexually transmitted infections. The Cleveland Clinic estimates that 90 percent of PID cases are caused by untreated gonorrhea and chlamydia, while 15 percent are not sexually transmitted.

According to Dr. Ross, in PID circumstances caused by chlamydia and gonorrhea, the bacteria of these infections enter the reproductive tract through the cervix and infect the female reproductive organs.

What Are the Symptoms of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?

One of the scary parts about PID is that the symptoms can be mild and go unnoticed — Dr. Ross said they may even be nonexistent.

However, when symptoms are present, they can include “pelvic and lower abdominal pain, unexplained fevers, abnormal bleeding, bleeding with sex, pain with sex, chills, pain with urination, a persistent foul-smelling vaginal discharge, and vomiting,” Dr. Ross explained.

Can IUDs Cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?

While the Dalkon Shield IUDs were linked to the development of PID and infertility in the ’70s, Dr. Ross said current IUDs are safe and well-studied. “Your biggest risk factors for a pelvic infection with chlamydia, gonorrhea, and other vaginal infections is unrelated to an IUD unless you have an active infection during the IUD insertion,” Dr. Ross added.

Information from Michigan Medicine explains that this is because, during the insertion, the infection can be carried into the uterus and fallopian tubes.

However, that’s why prior STI testing is sometimes recommended before IUD insertion. It’s also worth noting that the Mayo Clinic explains that this risk is generally limited to the first three weeks after the IUD insertion.

How Is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Treated?

If you have developed any of the symptoms associated with PID, it’s crucial to check in with your doctor. “If diagnosed with PID, you have to be treated immediately,” Dr. Ross said. She explained that the disease can cause an irreversible scarring of the fallopian tubes and damage to the ovaries. In addition to infertility, it can cause abscesses, scarring, and ectopic pregnancies.

According to the CDC, taking antibiotics is typically the treatment associated with PID, but again, the medication cannot cure any scarring that was caused by PID.

Of course, preventative measures can also stop PID from ever being an issue. This includes things like the early treatment of STIs for you and your sexual partner, using condoms, getting tested if you’re not planning on using protection, and avoiding douching.

If you have any concerns about your health, never hesitate to reach out to your doctor for advice and medical guidance.

Sid Neigum and Anti Social Running Club Join Forces To Support Toronto Restaurants

Photography courtesy of Sid Neigum

If you love good food, good causes and a good run, you’ll want to join Neigum and Michael Ng for ASRC’s virtual marathon.

Just about every industry has felt the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and in Canada, one of the hardest hit has been food. On December 16, Restaurants Canada reported that since March 2020, 10,000 restaurants closed across Canada, while nearly 50 percent expect to permanently close if things don’t change. So, how to support Toronto restaurants while things remain locked down?

The fashion industry, too, has taken a toll, with many retailers closing, like Addition Elle, or facing bankruptcy, like Frank And Oak. For Toronto-based designer Sid Neigum, who cancelled his resort collection ahead of the fall, “it’s been rough.” But, he adds, “I’ve pivoted, as many restaurants have, by starting an online shop and selling direct-to-consumer. Now, this month, our revenue is higher for direct-to-consumer (D2C) than business-to-business (B2B), which is a first. It’s [about] rethinking how you have to work and adapt.”

Neigum brought that sensibility to his second love — food — when Michael Ng, founder of Anti Social Running Club (ASRC), asked if he’d wanted to partner and co-host the first Dine & Dash Virtual Race in Toronto in support of local restaurants. The ASRC was founded during lockdown, and virtually connects runners on an app allowing everyone to check in on each other as they go, creating a socially-distanced network that encourages exercise at a time when many of us are spending most of our days indoors and at home.

Ng first orchestrated a Dine & Dash Virtual Race in Edmonton in February, which Neigum had taken part in from Toronto and loved, so he jumped at the chance for the two to work together and make a change.

“I wanted to reach out to Sid and see if he’d be interested in doing a Toronto edition after the success that we had in Edmonton,” says Ng. “Our biggest focus is to support local business, specifically in the restaurant industry. It’s been hit so hard during COVID, especially with no dine-in in Ontario yet. I really wanted to see if there was an opportunity for Toronto to do what we did and help in the way we know how.”

The race will take place from April 19 to 25. Registered runners can choose their distance — 10 km, half marathon or full marathon — and can run anywhere or any time within the timeframe, while using any type of tracking device or app. Afterwards, they can claim a meal at the participating restaurant of their choice from April 23 to 25. In other words, run your ass off and then reward it with some of the city’s best meals.

While there won’t be any winners in this race, dog-eat-dog types have the choice of submitting their times. Throughout the week, Ng and Neigum will update a leaderboard in hopes of satisfying their competitive streaks.

Registration is $55 for individuals, $110 for pairs, and includes a meal, a t-shirt (designed by Neigum, naturally), and entry into the race. Those outside of the city can also run, though a donation will be made to a local food bank in lieu of the meal.

Those restaurants participating in the event are a diverse bunch that could satisfy any appetite, and include 416 Snack Bar, Donna’s, Le Phenix, Hello 123, Imanishi, Tutti Matti and Alma, with one more yet to be confirmed.

“It’s all really delicious food that would be great to eat after a marathon,” concludes Neigum, while Ng adds with a laugh, “Food is why I run. Guilt-free meals after running for a few hours? Sign me up.”

Sign us up, too.

Registration begins on March 29 and closes on April 18. Click here for more details.

If You’re on the Pill and You Regularly Take Melatonin, Read This Important Warning

Close up of young woman holding contraceptive pills at home

Melatonin can help you fall asleep faster, but while doctors don’t recommend long-term use for anyone, people who are on birth control pills should take extra precautions before getting in the habit of reaching for a supplement whenever insomnia strikes.

Savita Ginde, MD, vice president of medical affairs at Stride Community Health Center and former chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, explained that melatonin is naturally produced in the pineal gland, the same gland that regulates sex hormones. While there are no definitive studies, “one can propose that taking or adding external melatonin could impact natural cycles, whether it’s natural sleep cycles or natural hormonal cycles, such as those that impact ovulation and menstrual cycles and thus affect fertility,” Dr. Ginde told POPSUGAR.

Then there’s the matter of where and how the body metabolizes melatonin. Heather Bartos, MD, a board-certified ob-gyn, told POPSUGAR that melatonin is metabolized in the liver along with a number of other medications, including birth control pills. “By asking the liver to do double duty, it can lower the effectiveness of the birth control pill,” she explained. Dr. Bartos added that certain antibiotics, medications, and supplements can also interfere with the metabolization of birth control, including St. John’s wort, an over-the-counter supplement that’s commonly used to treat depression.

It’s also important to note that melatonin may interfere with certain types of birth control pills more than others, though there hasn’t been enough research conducted to determine exactly how and to what extent that’s the case. For this reason, Dr. Bartos recommends erring on the side of caution if you regularly take melatonin. “I would switch to a LARC (long-active reversible contraceptive) such as an IUD,” she said.

If you’re taking melatonin more than “every so often,” both Dr. Bartos and Dr. Ginde recommend talking to your doctor to ensure that you’re protected from unwanted pregnancy and that your sleep issues are being adequately treated. “If sleep is an issue, don’t self-diagnose,” Dr. Ginde said. “Talk with your physician about solutions, and if melatonin is part of that plan, you and your doctor can review if and how a particular dose will impact your specific type of birth control.”

A Sleep Doctor and an Ob-Gyn Explain How Your Period Could Affect Your Sleep

Editor’s Note: We at POPSUGAR recognize that people of many genders and identities have female sex organs, not just those who are women. For this particular story, experts generally referred to people with female sex organs who menstruate as women.

As if my hormonal acne isn’t enough, I get the worst bouts of insomnia right before my period. It’s usually what clues me into the fact that my cycle is about to begin.

Curious as to whether premenstrual syndrome (PMS) can actually affect sleep or if my monthly insomnia is a random coincidence, I reached out to an ob-gyn and a sleep expert for more information.

According to Julie Levitt, MD, a board-certified ob-gyn at the Women’s Group of Northwestern, insomnia caused by the menstrual cycle could be a possibility because of the rise of progesterone levels in the latter half of the menstrual cycle after ovulation.

At the onset the menstrual cycle, progesterone and estrogen levels both drop, Dr. Levitt explained, which is what triggers bleeding. “Some women experience the effect of this as well on their ability to get to sleep and stay asleep.”

It’s been observed in scientific studies, too. A study performed in 2014 actually found a link between sleep fragmentation and the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, or when PMS occurs.

The experience of sleep disturbances surrounding the time of the menstrual cycle has also been self-reported in the 2007 National Sleep Foundation Sleep in America survey. Meredith Broderick, MD, a triple-board-certified sleep doctor and neurologist, pointed to the survey and said that 25 to 33 percent of menstruating women surveyed reported sleep disturbances before or during their periods.

“It also found that women who had more severe premenstrual symptoms (PMS) had insomnia or daytime sleepiness. The science evaluating more objective measures depends on the population,” Dr. Broderick said. “For example are you studying young women, women in mid-life, women with ‘normal’ menstrual cycles, or those with PMS or PMDD.”

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a more serious form of PMS where symptoms tend to be severe and interrupt daily life, may have some relation with trouble sleeping too. Johns Hopkins Medicine lists insomnia as a common physiological symptom.

The US Health and Human Services Office of Women’s Health also notes that seven in 10 women with PMDD have trouble going to sleep during the days leading up to their periods.

Dr. Broderick said that medical treatment for PMS and PMDD could help improve sleep, as could treating pain or discomfort, and you should always see your gynecologist if you’re experiencing abnormal period symptoms or irregularities.

“When in doubt, make an appointment with a board-certified sleep specialist if the sleep problem is interfering with your quality of life or daytime functioning,” Dr, Broderick added.
