These Are the 37 Items I Use to De-Stress Like a Wellness Expert

Bouts of stress and anxiety sneak up on all of us, but this year, I’ve made it my mission not to let them beat me down. When I start to feel panicked, I try to take inventory of the situation and focus on gaining perspective. It might sound counterintuitive, but I’ve discovered that the easiest way to de-stress is to be prepared. For me, that means having the right products at my disposal, so all I need to focus on are breathing deeply and taking care of myself.

These are the items I keep in stock, so if I have a quick minute for some self-care, I’m already prepared. Using them makes me feel more centered, and I can get back to myself. Some of them I use to keep myself out of a panic, and some of them I indulge in when I’m already feeling calm, but I consider each one an important part of my self-care routine. Take a deep breath, and shop my picks.

Why The Weeknd Had Bandaged Lookalike Dancers During His Super Bowl Performance

The Weeknd headlined tonight’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, and the musician, who has made headlines for wearing bandages during multiple award show performances, opted not to wear them himself for his big number. But he did have dancers wear them while performing “Can’t Feel My Face” and “Blinding Lights.”

While The Weeknd didn’t say on stage why he opted to incorporate them into his performance, he did talk to Variety about the choice ahead of the game.

“The significance of the entire head bandages is reflecting on the absurd culture of Hollywood celebrity and people manipulating themselves for superficial reasons to please and be validated,” he said.

The Weeknd has been playing a character, and his changing face plays into his After Hours music videos’ bad night in Las Vegas storyline, he confirmed: It’s all a progression and we watch The Character’s storyline hit heightened levels of danger and absurdity as his tale goes on.”

The Weeknd, by the way, confirmed ahead of the game that his performance would not feature any guest stars. “I’ve been reading a lot of rumors,” he told the NFL Network Thursday. Those rumors included speculation that Ariana Grande, who collaborated with him on “Love Me Harder,” could join him.

But that’s not the case, The Weeknd said: “There wasn’t any room to fit it in the narrative and the story I was telling in the performance. So there’s no special guests, no.”

The Weeknd added that his performance would be family-friendly, even as he explores heavy subject material. “I definitely want to be respectful to the viewers at home,” he told Variety. “I will still incorporate some of the storyline [from the videos—it’s a very cohesive story I’m telling throughout this year, so the story will continue, but we definitely will keep it PG for the families. I’ll do my best.”

Amanda Gorman Honors ‘Leaders, Healers, and Educators’ at Super Bowl 2021

On January 20, Amanda Gorman made history as the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history, and many were moved by her powerful words. Tonight was no different as Gorman recited a poem before kickoff at Super Bowl LV in Tampa.

Before kickoff, Gorman, wearing a silver-studded, light denim jacket, honored essential workers and honorary Super Bowl captains, Los Angeles teacher Trimaine Davis, Tampa Bay nurse Suzie Dorner, and Marine veteran James Martin.

Here is Gorman’s full poem:

“Today we honor our three captains
for their actions and impact in
a time of uncertainty and need.

They’ve taken the lead,
exceeding all expectations and limitations,
uplifting their communities and neighbors
as leaders, healers, and educators.

James has felt the wounds of warfare,
but this warrior still shares
his home with at-risk kids.

During Covid, he’s even lent a hand
live-streaming football for family and fans.
Trimaine is an educator who works nonstop,
providing his community with hotspots,
laptops, and tech workshops
so his students have all the tools
they need to succeed in life and in school.
Suzie is the ICU nurse manager at a Tampa Hospital.
Her chronicles prove that even in tragedy, hope is possible.
She lost her grandmothers to the pandemic,
and fights to save other lives in the ICU battle zone,
defining the frontline heroes risking their lives for our own.
Let us walk with these warriors,
charge on with these champions,
and carry forth the call of our captains!
We celebrate them by acting with courage and compassion,
by doing what is right and just.
for while we honor them today
it is they who every day honor us.”

Ahead of Gorman’s performance, CBS featured a Black Lives Matter tribute featuring Janelle Monáe a performance from Jennifer Hudson in honor of essential workers, a message from President and First Lady Biden, and a performance of “America the Beautiful” from HER.

After she spoke at the inauguration, Gorman received national recognition and praise. She has since spoken about the importance of that moment for her—and the imposter syndrome that can sometimes sneak in at engagements like this.

“Speaking in public as a Black girl is already daunting enough,” Gorman said in a TIME interview. “just coming onstage with my dark skin and my hair and my race—that in itself is inviting a type of people that have not often been welcomed or celebrated in the public sphere. Beyond that, as someone with a speech impediment, that impostor syndrome has always been exacerbated because there’s the concern, ‘Is the content of what I’m saying good enough?’ And then the additional fear, ‘Is the way I’m saying it good enough?'”

Gorman, whose fashion and presence had the attention of everyone watching on January 20, also spoke to the way society places judgment on Black women: “For Black women, there’s also the politics of respectability—despite our best attempts, we are criticized for never being put-together enough; but when we do, we’re too showy,” she continued. “We’re always walking this really tentative line of who we are and what the public sees us as. I’m handling it day by day.”

This 10-Minute High-Intensity Workout For People in a Wheelchair Uses Light Dumbbells

Sonja Ast, an ACE-certified personal trainer and certified inclusive fitness trainer (CIFT) woat the Lakeshore Foundation, always wanted a career supporting people with disabilities. Ast, who uses a wheelchair herself, told POPSUGAR that she felt called to help others.

Ast’s CIFT certification was created in collaboration between the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (NCHPAD) and the American College of Sports Medicine, (ACSM). (NCHPAD is hosting a two-day virtual workshop about inclusive fitness training in March to help trainers gain knowledge about serving clients who have a disability.)

Kelly Bonner, associate director at NCHPAD who is also an ACE-certified trainer and CIFT, told POPSUGAR that having this certification makes for a safer training atmosphere simply due to the specific knowledge of working with those who have disabilities. Though Ast trains people with and without disabilities, when developing exercise routines for those who use wheelchairs, she also carefully assesses their muscle function and ability levels as well. Ast created the following 10-minute workout for people who use wheelchairs.

10-Minute Workout For People Who Use a Wheelchair

Equipment needed: two light dumbbells (Ast uses a set of five-pound weights) or household items you can lift with.

Directions: Warm up for a few minutes with exercises such as neck circles, arm circles, wrist circles, and trunk twists. The workout is broken up into three parts: two Tabatas and one separate cardio round. For each Tabata, you’ll do 20 seconds of work followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeating the moves two times through. For the cardio round, you’ll do two exercises for one minute each. There are no breaks other than the 10-second rests programmed in the Tabatas, though you can take longer breaks in between rounds if needed. (Keep reading for specific instructions on how to do each exercise.) Ast recommends cooling down by stretching your wrists, arms, neck, and back.

Tabata 1: 2 Rounds

  • Bicep curl to overhead press: 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest
  • Crunch: 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest
  • Row to triceps extension: 20 seconds (10 seconds on each arm) followed by 10 seconds of rest
  • Crossover crunch: 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest

Straight Cardio: 1 Round

  • Punch: one minute
  • Four leaf clover: one minute (30 seconds in each direction)

Tabata 2: 2 Rounds

  • Ski erg: 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest
  • Hip hinge: 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest
  • Triceps dip: 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest
  • Russian twist: 20 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest

Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley Are Reportedly Engaged

During the 10th annual CBS “NFL Honors” show on Saturday night, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers revealed that he got engaged in 2020. Fans quickly connected the dots and fans concluded that his fiancée is Shailene Woodley; rumors about their romantic involvement have been circulating recently.

During his speech, Rodgers dropped this bomb: “2020 was definitely a crazy year, filled with lots of change, growth, some amazing memorable moments, 180 straight days of having my nose hairs scraped, playing for very little fans,” Rodgers said. “I got engaged and I played some of the best football of my career.”

Later in his speech, Rodgers thanked his “fiancée” without mentioning her name.

Reports of Rodgers and Woodley’s relationship only began to surface this week, making them the first surprise couple of 2021, as ELLE’s Alyssa Bailey wrote on Wednesday.

“They have kept things private and low key,” a source told E!. “They have seen each other and been in touch. They continue to talk and see each other when they can. They are both focused on their careers, but they also make time for each other.”

In an April 2020 interview with The New York Times, Woodley revealed she was no longer dating rugby player Ben Volavola, with whom she’d been involved since 2017.

“We’re societally conditioned to assume that one person can be our end-all, be-all,” she said. “This is a concept I’ve been thinking about often right now, because I’m very much single [after being in a relationship for years with the rugby player Ben Volavola], and I’ve chosen to be single for a while. The idea of being with someone…is it only because you’ve fallen in love with that person, or because there’s a newness to understanding yourself because of what that person can offer you?”

Before Woodley, Rodgers previously dated race car driver Danica Patrick and was in a relationship with Olivia Munn from 2014 to 2017.

This Is the Most Decadent Chocolate Cake Recipe — You’ll Never Guess It’s Free From Added Sugar!

Just because you’re trying to eat sugar-free, does not mean you can’t have dessert. And I’m not talking about fresh fruit or frozen fruit ice cream — this is real decadent, moist, and sweet chocolate cake! You will be so impressed with the tender texture of the cake and the absolutely sweet, smooth, and thick chocolate frosting. This chocolate cake recipe is vegan, gluten-free, oil-free, and sweetened naturally with dates, sweet potato, and banana. But I assure it — it tastes like chocolate cake! My husband was shocked that it was free from any added or refined sugar.

What you’ll definitely need to make this cake is a high-speed blender. You’ll use it to make both the cake batter and the frosting, in order to puree the dates and the raw cashews. A food processor will work too, but the frosting just won’t be as smooth.

This cake is made with whole food ingredients, so when you eat it, you’ll feel energized and not get that sugar crash later. I love that it’s healthy, but it doesn’t taste healthy! I can’t get over how delicious the frosting is, and I prefer it so much more than the ones you get in the tubs at the store, which can taste fake and too sweet, IMO. Just note that while this cake is made with healthy and whole ingredients, it’s not low in calories.

This cake recipe is perfect for a birthday, a special dinner or holiday, or for a regular Tuesday night. Store leftovers (if there are any!) in the fridge for up to five days.

Healthy Vegan Sugar-Free Gluten-Free Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

  1. For the cake:
1 3/4 cup cooked and mashed sweet potato (about 1 medium)
    1 very ripe banana
    1 1/2 cups Medjool dates (about 15 to 18)
4 ounces applesauce (one of those small cups)
    1 cup water
    1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
    2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups rolled oats (ground to make 2 1/4 cups oat flour)
    1/2 cup cocoa powder
    1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
    1 teaspoon baking powder
  1. For the frosting:
2 cups raw cashews (9 ounces)
3/4 cup unsweetened soy milk (or any non-dairy milk)
    3/4 cup Medjool dates (9 to 12)
    3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place a parchment paper circle on both bottoms of two nine-inch round cake pans.
  2. Add mashed sweet potato, banana, dates, applesauce, water, balsamic vinegar, and vanilla to a high speed blender and blend until smooth, several minutes.
  3. In a large bowl, add the oat flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and baking powder, and mix together. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix together until smooth. The batter will be thick.
  4. Divide the batter between the two prepared cake pans and spread it out evenly.
  5. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
  6. Take the pans out of the oven, and after a few minutes, take the cakes out of the pans and cool completely on a rack before frosting.
  7. To make the frosting, add all the ingredients to your blender and process until smooth. Have patience with this and use your damper — this can take up to 10 minutes, but it’s worth it. This frosting should look like this:
  8. Place one cake on a plate or cake stand. Frost the top of that layer. Add the second layer of cake and frost the top and sides. Decorate with fresh fruit and enjoy!

Bella Hadid and The Weeknd’s Complete Relationship Timeline, Through Every Breakup and Reconciliation

The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) has made a career out of albums that are simultaneously seductive and sad. But his music isn’t the only thing that can be described that way: his on-and-off relationship with supermodel Bella Hadid can be, too. After initially connecting in 2015, the couple has had multiple breakups and reconciliations. They got back together after The Weeknd’s highly-publicized Selena Gomez relationship of 2017, then broke up due to conflicting schedules in August 2019. There’s been reconciliation rumors ever since, although the two remain off a year later.

Considering their history (and The Weeknd’s musical catalogue), it’s not surprising that several tracks off his last album After Hours reference Hadid. Look back at the Abel and Bella romance that inspired countless songs and discover why the couple reconnected earlier this year. Here, a review of their twisty past.

April 2015

E! initially reported news that the couple was dating after they were spotted at Coachella. “They were hanging out in Coachella and were flirting lots,” a source said. “They have many things in common and really enjoyed each other’s company. She loves his music as well. They are hanging out for sure now.” The source also mentioned that while the two had met before, the music festival was “where they really clicked.”

Us Weekly also confirmed news of the pairing, noting that Hadid and The Weeknd had already spent time with Gigi and her boyfriend at the time, Cody Simpson. They had also gone on double dates with Miley Cyrus and her then-boyfriend Patrick Schwarzenegger. (Oh, how the times have changed.)

The Weeknd would later confirm in an October 2015 Rolling Stone profile that they originally connected when he asked Hadid to be on the artwork for his album Beauty Behind the Madness. “My motive was literally to work with her,” he admitted. However, when she declined, “I was like, ‘All right, cool—we can meet up face-to-face.’”

September 2015

The couple celebrated New York Fashion Week together, photographed leaving the Alexander Wang show hand in hand.

October 2015

Hadid and The Weeknd were then spotted in Soho alongside Bella’s sister Gigi and mom, Yolanda, signaling their seals of approval for the relationship.

Yolanda also shared a snap of her daughter and The Weeknd on Bella’s birthday. In the aforementioned Rolling Stone piece, The Weeknd revealed that he’d bought Hadid a Yorkie named Hendrix for her 19th birthday. “But I’m probably going to end up taking care of it,” he admitted.

During the same interview, he discussed how he was attracted to how hardworking Hadid is and the bond she shares with her family. “It just kind of fell into my lap,” he told the outlet of their relationship. “If this had happened two years ago—well, she couldn’t.” (Hadid would have been 16.) “But if I’d met someone two years ago, I probably would’ve fucked it up. But I’m more—how do I say it?—clear-thinking now.”

November 2015

Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd, and Bella Hadid attended an event at the Hard Rock in New York.

Hadid appeared in the music video for The Weeknd’s song, “In the Night.”

In the midst of the holidays, E! reported that the couple were on a break. A source told the outlet, “Their schedules got very busy, and it really cut into their relationship. They are still in each other’s lives though, just not in the same exclusive capacity.”

February 2016

The Grammy Awards saw the couple emerging from split rumors in a major way. They made their red carpet debut together, with Hadid sharing the moment on Instagram. “This is YOUR day baby! I’m so proud of you ❤️I feel so lucky to be by your side 👑,” she captioned a snap of them.

Not only did the pair go Instagram and red carpet official on the same night, but The Weeknd took home his first two Grammys. Hadid later opened up to Glamour about the evening, explaining, “It was a big night for him. He has worked so hard, and he did so well that night. As a girlfriend I wanted to be there to support him. Seeing him so happy when he won a Grammy made me so happy.”

In the same interview, she was asked whether she feels she’s dating Abel or his musical persona, The Weeknd. “I’m dating Abel. I don’t see him as The Weeknd,” she explained. “I’m proud of The Weeknd and the music he makes, but I really love Abel.”

March 2016

Then it was The Weeknd’s turn to support Hadid at Daily Front Row’s Fashion Los Angeles Awards.

October 2016

The couple jetted off to Tokyo. Hadid shared a photo from the trip to Instagram captioned, ” Mr. T 👾💜.”

The Weeknd was also by Hadid’s side as she celebrated her 20th birthday.

November 2016

About a month later, People ran a report that the couple had broken up. “Their schedules have been too hard to coordinate and he is focusing on finishing and promoting his album,” a source told the outlet. “They still have a great deal of love for one another and will remain friends.”

On November 25, The Weeknd’s album Starboy was released. News broke shortly after that he’d be performing on the same Victoria’s Secret stage as Hadid on December 5. When asked about the situation, Hadid told E! News, “This is his second year performing, and I think he’s going to kill it. There is no awkwardness. He is my best friend, and I am excited because I am walking during his performance.”

Sure enough, the performance went more than smoothly. The consensus was that Hadid’s runway walk won the post-breakup narrative. Afterwards, Hadid posted a photo from the night with the caption, “Thank you @theweeknd for being the best and most incredible performer on the planet. You KILLED it, as always😍❤️.”

An E! source affirmed the breakup was amicable explaining, “Getting back together is possible in the future. He has been really supportive with her.”

January 2017

However, plans for a reconciliation were abruptly halted when The Weeknd was spotted kissing Selena Gomez in Santa Monica. Hadid promptly unfollowed Gomez on Instagram. Three days later, many believe she addressed the new relationship by posting a photo of herself flipping off the camera.

A People source explained that while “Bella and Abel’s split wasn’t dramatic,” the model was “hurt and pissed that he’s moved on so quickly with Selena.” However, sources close to Gomez clarified that though the two had met through Taylor Swift’s squad, “they’ve never been close.”

An Us Weekly insider went further, claiming, “Bella has reached out to Abel a few times and told him Selena is using him. He thinks she’s just jealous and isn’t listening to her.”

March 2017

Both The Weeknd and Gomez quietly unfollowed Hadid on Instagram. However, the couple continued to follow Gigi and Bella didn’t stop following her ex. In an interview with Teen Vogue the month prior, Hadid said of The Weeknd, “I’ll always respect him, and I’ll always love him. Sometimes you want to be sad about it or handle it differently, but at the end of the day, you never want to burn a bridge that you’ve fought so hard to build.” Hadid quietly unfollows The Weeknd by early April.

October 2017

More than six months later, Hadid’s mom, Yolanda, appeared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, where she was asked if her daughter cared that The Weeknd was dating Gomez. “Not anymore, I think,” she casually stated.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

A little over a week later, People broke news that The Weeknd and Gomez had split after 10 months of dating. “She and Abel have been going back and forth for a few months about their relationship,” an insider told the outlet. “It’s been hard with him being on tour and her shooting in New York. That wasn’t easy on them.” Gomez was also linked to on-and-off ex Justin Bieber around the same time. Meanwhile, Hadid posted a wine-sipping selfie in Tuscany.

November 2017

Two weeks after his breakup with Gomez, The Weeknd was seen leaving Hadid’s NYC apartment. A source told E! News, “Bella and Abel have been in contact since Abel and Selena split, but they are not back together. Abel reached out to Bella asking to hang out and catch up, and she decided to see him and see where things go. She knows that if they don’t date again, they can at least be good friends.” An Us Weekly insider claimed, “Bella really missed him. She’s happy with where things are and he is too. They are still totally in love.”

April 2018

Us Weekly reported that the couple was officially back together and kissing at Coachella. At the festival, The Weeknd’s set included an emotional rendition of “Call Out My Name,” a song widely believed to be about Gomez.

E! ran a report that the couple’s PDA during the event was hot and heavy. “Bella never really lost feeling for Abel and had hope they would eventually get back together,” a source told the outlet. However, the model denied the account, responding to the E! News Instagram account, “it wasn’t me,” alongside the shrugging and detective emojis.

May 2018

There’s no denying that Hadid and The Weeknd kissed at the Magnum x Alexander Wang afterparty for the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Photos of the pair emerged, as well as a report from E! that they had been “secretly dating” for a few months.

July 2018

Towards the end of the summer (and after several teases on Instagram Stories) Hadid and The Weeknd was back on. The couple re-followed each other on Instagram. Then E! proclaimed the pair was “exclusively dating” and “in a great place.” The source went on to say, “Abel realized once he started dating around, that he actually is still in love with Bella, and they reconnected.” They even made an appearance at Kylie Jenner’s 21st, taking pictures in the photo booth.

October 2018

The fall brought kissing from the couple in Soho and public professions of love for Hadid’s 22nd birthday.

Further proof that they’re stronger than ever? Us Weekly reported that the musician asked Hadid to move into his NYC apartment and she agreed. The outlet also spoke to sources who said the couple was “madly in love with each other. A proposal is on the horizon.”

December 2018

Hadid mentioned The Weeknd twice in her Vogue “73 Questions” interview. When asked who makes her laugh the hardest and who is the most beautiful person she knows, her boyfriend was the answer for both.

February 2019

The Weeknd and Hadid wore matching camo outfits to celebrate his 29th birthday. Hadid captioned photos of them on Instagram, “1 minute til my favorite day of the year…. @theweeknd.”

If you still wondered where Hadid stands with Gomez nearly two years after her relationship with The Weeknd, speculate no more. The model officially liked a photo of Gomez on Instagram, signaling that there’s no drama to be found.

August 2019

After a few quiet months for the couple, E! reported that The Weeknd and Hadid had split again. A source told the outlet, “They are in different places right now, physically and mentally. Bella is prepping for her fashion week commitments and Abel is working on his music and his upcoming acting debut.” Apparently, the pair hadn’t “spent quality time together in months.”

Sources told Entertainment Tonight a different story, claiming that the couple “haven’t broken up, but are working through things like normal couples do.” In comments similarly made after the pair’s first breakup, a source said that “he two love one another, have lost one another in the past and want to try and make it work.”

Other than one near run-in at Catch One nightclub in late August, the couple appeared to be working on solo projects. Hadid has walked shows at New York, Milan, and Paris fashion weeks. Meanwhile, The Weeknd teased upcoming music on Twitter.

October 2019

As for another reconciliation between the two, apparently they “Earned It.” E! reported that Hadid and The Weeknd were back together hours after he made an appearance at her 23rd birthday party in New York. A source said, “Abel met up with Bella last night for her third birthday celebration at L’Avenue. He was with her the entire night and they left together to go back to the apartment they both shared. You could tell that they were definitely in love and they both looked very happy being around each other.”

That source explained their reconciliation was weeks in the making. “Bella and Abel have been in touch the last couple of weeks and have been working on their relationship,” the source said. “Initially, Abel reached out to Bella first checking in to say hello, and she agreed to meet up with him. There was no love lost between the two. Abel just had a few things he needed to work on and his focus was elsewhere. They are in a better place right now but are trying to keep things on the down low. They both want to be more private about it this time around.”

However, sources were seemingly divided over whether or not Hadid and The Weeknd had reconciled. An insider told TMZ that after the birthday spotting, the pair was just friends. Then, The Weeknd’s rep confirmed to People “they just attended as friends.”

November 2019

On November 5, The Weeknd’s ex Selena Gomez decided to follow both Bella and Gigi Hadid on Instagram, signaling they no longer have any drama. Gigi now follows Gomez, although Bella doesn’t.

Then, a few weeks later Gomez commented on one of Bella’s photos “Stunning 😍.” But instead of replying to the comment, Hadid deleted the Instagram post all together. Fans still managed to capture the moment, below.

When a Gomez fan account pointed out that the post had been deleted by Hadid, Gomez commented, “That sucks 😢.”

Shortly after, Gomez clarified what she meant and added she didn’t intend to start any drama between her and Hadid. Gomez commented on fan account Selssbrina’s Instagram (via TheSelenaRundown) and wrote, “I shouldn’t of spoken without knowing the truth. I’m sorry. Please don’t be hurtful. She is a wonderful person, and it was all a misunderstanding.”

TMZ reported that Gomez and Hadid privately worked through the issue. Multiple sources said Hadid “actually went out of her way to reach out to Selena this weekend to squash any potential beef.”

Towards the end of the month, two singles from The Weeknd’s album After Hours were released. Lyrics in both “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights,” seemingly addressed the breakups from Hadid and Gomez. In “Heartless,” lyrics reference his reconciliation with Hadid after breaking up with Gomez: “You just came back in my life / You never gave up on me (Why don’t you?)/ I’ll never know what you see (Why won’t you?) / I don’t do well when alone (Oh yeah) / You hear it clear in my tone.” The “Blinding Lights” lyrics also allude to Hadid coming back to The Weeknd.

February 2020

“After Hours,” the third single off of The Weeknd’s new album, also includes some Hadid references. Lyrics such as, “my heart belongs to you / I’ll risk it all for you I won’t just leave / This time, I’ll never leave,” suggest the singer left Hadid before, but is now committed to making a relationship work. Fans also read into the bridge of the song for possible reconciliation clues:

“I know it’s all my fault / Made you put down your guard / I know I made you fall / I said you were wrong for me / I lied to you, I lied to you, I lied to you (To you) / Can’t hide the truth, I stayed with her in spite of you / You did some things that you regret, still right for you / ‘Cause this house is not a home.”

But the couple hadn’t reconciled in real life. “Bella isn’t dating anyone at the moment,” a source told Us Weekly in February. “She is so busy traveling and working nonstop and she’s mostly focused on her career right now. She still has feelings for The Weeknd and there’s always a possibility that they will get back together down the line, but for right now, she’s single.”

March 2020

On March 20, The Weeknd’s album After Hours was released. A few more tracks caught the attention of Hadid fans. In “Scared to Live,” The Weeknd addresses the on-off nature of his relationship with Hadid, encouraging her to move on with someone else. At one point, he sings, “No, don’t be scared to live again / Be scared to live again / You always miss the chance to fall for someone else (Uh, uh) / ‘Cause your heart only knows me.”

In “Save Your Tears,” The Weeknd alludes to a chance meeting between him and Hadid last summer. According to tabloid reports at the time, the exes ran into each other at Catch One nightclub after their August 2019 breakup, with Hadid leaving shortly after The Weeknd arrived. The Weeknd begins the song: “I saw you dancing in a crowded room / You look so happy when I’m not with you / But then you saw me, caught you by surprise / A single teardrop falling from your eye.”

May 2020

Two months after The Weeknd’s album release, Hadid followed and then unfollowed his ex Selena Gomez. The initial following came on May 4, about three years after Gomez’s relationship with The Weeknd. (At the time, both parties unfollowed Hadid, and she returned the gesture.) But before anyone could call the feud finished, Hadid unfollowed Gomez the very next day.

June 2020

Nine months after the couple’s split, a source told Us Weekly that Hadid and The Weeknd “have been in touch recently.” Their perceived reunion came about four months after a source told the outlet, “there’s always a possibility that they will get back together down the line.”

August 2020

Earlier this month, The Weeknd spoke with Esquire about the inspiration behind his 2018 six-track EP My Dear Melancholy. While the album is widely believed to be about his 10-month relationship with Gomez, he wouldn’t confirm which of his exes was referenced on the record. He did say that the project only took him two and a half weeks to write, record, and release. “The reason why it was so short is like, I think I just had nothing else to say on this…whatever….” he began. “It was just like this cathartic piece of art. And yeah, it was short, because that’s all I had to say on this situation.” When asked if airing his feelings musically made him feel better, The Weeknd replied, “Yeah, of course. I mean, that would have sucked if I didn’t.”

The Weeknd and Hadid would also reunite in person at MTV VMA rehearsals in New York City on the Friday before the Sunday ceremony. A source told Daily Mail that “they played it cool and crossed paths with each other, same place, same time.” That source added that the former couple still seem to be “on good terms.”

February 2021

Ahead of The Weeknd’s halftime performance at the Super Bowl, rumors have been circulating about his involvement with Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalía. In an interview with Variety, The Weeknd confirmed he wouldn’t be bringing a plus-one to his Super Bowl performance, despite reports otherwise.

“I’ve been reading a lot of rumors…I wouldn’t bet on it,” he said. “There wasn’t any room to fit it in the narrative, in the story I was telling in the performance. So yeah. There’s no special guests.”

Kylie Jenner and Daughter Stormi Are Traveling Once Again in a Global Pandemic

It’s no secret that the Kardashian-Jenner family has had a real zest for travel lately—despite the fact that the pandemic is still very much present in the U.S. and in other parts of the world.

In August, she and her sister Kendall traveled to Turks and Caicos for Kylie’s 23rd birthday. Kylie’s daughter, Stormi, turned 3 years old on February 1, and ahead of her big day, Kylie returned to Turks and Caicos. This time, she was with her sisters Kim, Kourtney, and Khloé Kardashian and their daughters for a “girls trip.”

Just days after she shared photos of that last trip, Kylie and Stormi are on another trip. This time, they are in Palm Springs, which is a lot closer to home than her Paris trip last August.

Per The Daily Mail, on Friday, Kylie and Stormi were spotted hopping on a private plane. She was reportedly accompanied on the flight by Yris Palmer and her daughter, Ayla.

Kylie appears to be soaking in the rays while in Palm Springs, where her mom, Kris Jenner, has a house. She posted this bikini shot (with a promotion for Kylie Skin).

The inclusive design has already found a fan in Paralympian Bebe Vio. “Usually I spend so much time to get in my shoes,” the champion fencer said in a statement. “With the Nike Go FlyEase, I just need to put my feet in and jump on it. For Buccaneers Co-Owner Darcie Glazer Kassewitz, Sunday’s Game Is ‘A Dream Come True’

tampa, fl february 28, 2020 ownerpresident tampa bay buccaneers foundation and glazer family foundation darcie glazer kassewitz speaks to athletes as they compete on day 3 of the 2020 girls flag football preseason classic at adventhealth training center photo bytampa bay buccaneers

Matt May/Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Almost a year ago, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were an underperforming franchise who’d just signed a then-42-year-old Tom Brady to a two-year $50 million contract in a move that some may have found surprising. Now, they’re two days away from playing in the Super Bowl, and as the first NFL team in history to compete on their own arena.

For Darcie Glazer Kassewitz, who owns the team along with her family, it was the culmination of a long-held dream. “For our fans, it’s been unbelievable. They deserve it. It’s been a long time,” she says. After all, the team’s last (and only) big game appearance was its victory in 2003. Pulling off a successful season during a pandemic was not easy and required constant adjustments. “Throughout this entire process, the number one focus has been on ensuring the safety and welfare of our fans, our players, our staff, and it’s taken a tremendous amount of hard work and tireless efforts of not only our organization, but everyone in the community,” Kassewitz says. “And what I’ve learned is that we have an unbelievable community. Everybody’s pulled together to do what’s best, they’ve stayed positive throughout this entire process. And we’ve really seen the entire community come together.”

Kassewitz began working for the Buccaneers in 1995, after her father, Malcolm Glazer purchased the team. She also serves as president of the Glazer Vision Foundation, which provides full-treatment vision correction to underserved children in Tampa Bay, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Foundation. But sports have always been a part of her life, as the sole daughter amongst five brothers. “Family is very meaningful to us all,” Kassewitz says. “So, that feeling is kind of translated into a larger family with the Buccaneers. Everybody that plays a role with the team, from the players and the coaches and the staff to our fans, we’re all connected. That’s something that’s very important to me.”

As one of few female owners in the NFL, Kassewitz feels she has a specific role to play within the franchise and the league. She works closely with Women in Red, a group for the team’s female fans. Events include a pre-season practice open only to members of the group. “The connection to our female fans is very important to me,” she says. “We take one day of training camp and make it an exclusive Women of Red practice. You have thousands of women that have something in common, who share a love for football, a passion for the Bucs. There are instant bonds created where they can create friendships and make memories together.”

Great strides have been made in recent years toward gender equity in the notoriously male sport. On Sunday, Sarah Thomas will become the first woman to referee a Super Bowl. Last year, Katie Sowers, in her fourth season in the NFL, was the first woman to coach in a Super Bowl as the San Francisco 49ers offensive assistant, while Vanderbilt’s Sarah Fuller made history playing kicker (and scoring) in a Power Five game for the university team.

Kassewitz wants the Buccaneers to be part of that wave. “We’re so proud to be the first in the NFL to have two full-time female coaches [Maral Javadifar, an assistant strength and conditioning coach, and assistant defensive line coach Lori Locust], and it’s really a testament to head coach Bruce Arians and his values,” she says. “We all feel that if a person can make this team or this organization stronger, we want them on board. It’s looking beyond norms and stereotypes, and valuing somebody strictly based on their skills. That’s incredibly important to us.”

The team is investing in equity off the field as well. Around half of the Buccaneers VPs are women, Kassewitz says. That includes Jaqueline Davidson, the heavily celebrated director of football research, who was hired last year, after previously serving as the director of football administration for the New York Jets. Davidson is one of the most high-profile Black women working for the league.

In 2020, the NFL announced that women constituted 47 percent of their fanbase, a stat that belies a belief by some that women might tune into a big game like this weekend’s Super Bowl solely for the big-budget commercials and half-time performance. Kassewitz wants those female fans to feel seen and recognized. Last year the team initiated the annual Girls in Football Scholarship program. “There are so many women who want to pursue their love of football into a career,” she says. “We found that there were [very few] scholarships for female football players, and we really knew that we had to fill this void. We wanted to take our support of women every step of the way, starting at the rec centers through middle school, through high school and showing women that they could pursue their love of football.” The team also started the first all-girls flag football league in Tampa.

The NFL—and its players—haven’t always had a sterling history with women. Asked about those who might be disinclined to engage with the sport because of this, Kassewitz points to the off-the-field work of team members, like a player-led social justice initiative and the Buccaneers Youth Leadership Program. “I can’t say enough about our players. I think that people don’t really know how much time players spent outside of football, doing unbelievable things in the community. I get to see a lot of it firsthand. And a lot of it, they do very quietly. They’re not looking for the accolades,” she says.

At a time when athletes are becoming more vocal in their support of Black Lives Matter and antiracism, Kassewitz says she’s eager to support the issues that matter to her players. “I tell them all the time, please come to me, tell me what you are looking for, because we’re all learning as we go along and we all have different experiences to draw from. It’s very important for me that the players do incredible work and bring their ideas to the Buccaneers so that we can really push them out,” she says.

On Sunday, those players will take to the field for a moment few could have believed would happen. “It’s hard to describe,” says Kassewitz. “It’s a dream come true.”

Super Bowl Ref Sarah Thomas Is the Latest in a String of Women Breaking Barriers in Pro Sports

The most significant thing happening on the field Sunday during Super Bowl LV will not be Tom Brady gunning for the championship with a team other than the New England Patriots, or Patrick Mahomes having a shot at winning his second consecutive title. No, the big news will be happening on the sidelines, where Sarah Thomas will make history as the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl.

Thomas’s historic accomplishment is long overdue; the fact that it’s happening in football, a sport that women have been largely shut out of since its debut in the 1880s, makes it an even bigger deal. Due to sexist stereotypes, football is still considered to be a man’s game — too physically aggressive for women’s more delicate nature, despite the fact that women have played the game since its inception. That Thomas has broken through in football, specifically, deserves to be celebrated. But she is part of a larger trend of women officials rising in the ranks of professional sports, a field that has long been off-limits to them.

Thomas is part of a larger trend of women officials rising in the ranks of professional sports, a field that has long been off-limits to them.

In a 2017 survey by the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO), only 6 percent of the 17,487 respondents were women. Of those women, only 95 had ever officiated at the professional level, and that’s across all sports. Thomas has made it to the echelon of her field, but she’s the only woman on a roster of 131 National Football League officials, and she made her debut in 2015 — 95 years after the NFL began. While Kathryn Nesbitt made history when she officiated Major League Soccer’s championship match last December, other men’s professional leagues — including Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League — have yet to have a woman officiate a game.

Even in basketball, which is leaps and bounds ahead of most other sports, two women had never officiated together in a National Basketball Association game until a couple weeks ago, when Natalie Sago and Jenna Schroeder became part of the first two-woman officiating crew in the league’s history. “This is a big deal,” Schroeder said in an NBA press release. “It’s like my feminist dreams come true, that like my personal values are colliding with my professional values and it’s awesome.”

The strides women have made in breaking into the top ranks of sports officiating have accelerated just over the last few years. In 2018, I wrote about how, despite the NBA being the first men’s professional league to hire women officials, their progress had stalled. At that time, there was only one woman officiating in the league. Today, there are five.

Like other sports, however, the pipeline to becoming an NBA ref is full of potential. The G-League, the NBA’s development league, has had three-women crews before, and there are a decent number of women officiating in the WNBA. (In 2018, 28 percent of officials in the NBA’s G-League were women, as well as 37 percent of officials in the WNBA.) There are 10 women listed on the “women’s panel” of soccer’s Professional Referee Organization, which provides officials to the National Women’s Soccer League and MLS, among others. Two women are umpiring in minor league baseball, and the NHL is actively developing the women officials in its pipeline.

We are just over a month into 2021 and there has already been a third first for officiating in professional sports — the National Women’s Hockey League brought an all-woman officiating crew to their (doomed) “bubble” season in Lake Placid, NY. There were 10 members of that crew, through a partnership with USA Hockey. “We’re appreciative of the partnership that has been formed with the NWHL in an effort to promote and develop our female officials,” Matt Leaf, director of USA Hockey’s officiating education program, said in a press release.

Women have been such an afterthought when it comes to sports officiating that they often don’t even have uniforms or equipment in sizes that fit them.

It’s often hard for women to break into a field that is not designed for them. That means from recruitment on up, the system has to be redesigned to be more inclusive. Women have been such an afterthought when it comes to sports officiating that they often don’t even have uniforms or equipment in sizes that fit them. Baseball umpire equipment doesn’t come in women’s sizes, meaning that women are having to rig chest plates designed for wider, flatter chests to fit their bodies, often using a heat gun to bend and shape the metal plates themselves. When Thomas was first promoted to the ranks of the NFL, the uniforms only came in men’s sizes; hers had to be customized.

And while breaking into men’s professional sports shouldn’t be considered the pinnacle of success — after all, women’s sports are not second fiddle — the fact of the matter is that there is a huge pay discrepancy between men’s and women’s professional leagues. So, if someone hopes to make a career out of officiating, men’s sports will better allow them to do that. It’s just one more place the gender wage gap manifests.

There’s some evidence that diversity and inclusion efforts have increased their focus on recruiting women into the field of officiating because it’s considered a dying industry — not enough young people are entering the field or pursuing it as a career path. That is a cynical view on the issue, perhaps, but it doesn’t take away from the significance of the strides women officials are making in professional sports.

I never set out to be the first in any of this. But knowing the impact that I’m having on not just my daughter but young girls everywhere, women everywhere,” Thomas said in a video for the NFL about her achievement. “When I get on that field and I take it all in, I know that I’m probably going to get a little teary-eyed. This is remarkable, and I’m truly honored and humbled to be a part of this year’s Super Bowl crew.”

Malcolm & Marie Isn’t a Story About Love. It’s a Story About Power.

“This is not a love story. This is the story of love.” The bare-bones black-and-white trailer for Malcolm & Marie prepares its audience for a dish-smashing, insult-hurling, love-making saga familiar to any couple with unresolved issues stuck together in quarantine. And the movie certainly delivers on that front. But it’s the specificities of this couple—a Black director (John David Washington) basking in recent success and his gorgeous, professionally stunted younger girlfriend (Zendaya)—that sets this movie apart from, say, Revolutionary Road. This is a story about power and powerlessness.

Malcolm & Marie opens with Malcolm practically skipping into the beautiful rental home provided by his producers in a dapper suit, chest puffed out and raving about the success of his film’s premiere that night. James Brown’s lively “Down & Out in New York City” plays as Marie, reticent in a shiny cutout gown baring her flat stomach, aggressively fixes his supper from an unceremonious box of Kraft macaroni and cheese. It’s clear she’s upset about something, but his dinner cannot go unmade. Besides, he’s not done boasting.

Writer-director Sam Levinson drops us inside a moment between two people we rarely see behind closed doors—the successful older man and the so-called “love” of his life—and forces them to reckon with how they’ve used, or misused, each other. What may be considered a minor offense to some is the impetus of an argument that lasts the entire film: Malcolm forgot to thank Marie in his speech during the event. While it could be an innocuous omission, it suggests a general lack of appreciation for the role she’s played in his life. That’s especially true when it comes to the trophy girlfriend dynamic, where power and appearances are of the utmost importance, and that’s exactly where Malcolm & Marie sits.

It’s not pretty. It gets loud. Expletives explode out of their mouths. Feelings are hurt between bouts of affection, as songs like Duke Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood” play. The camera painstakingly tracks each exasperated eye-roll, scream, caress, and angry pace along the plush carpet.

“I didn’t realize what I was to you, a fucking movie,” Marie tells Malcolm in a moment that crystallizes her disappointment. His film centers a struggling female artist and recovering addict—just like Marie—and she knows he couldn’t have made it without her. In fact, she auditioned for the role and he rejected her; she reminds him by reenacting a scene with flawless precision, scraping a knife across the floor as she recites his lines about refusing to get well and sleeping with his friends. The scope of Zendaya’s performance is evident as Marie pivots, in an instant, from this jarring portrayal to her real, wounded self. Hugging her feet on the floor, she says in a small voice, “You fought to get the movie made. Why didn’t you fight for me?”

It’s simple to call Marie desperate for her partner’s validation—and she surely is, as anyone in a relationship in which they’re patronized and devalued might be—but Malcolm also needs her. She feeds his ego, calling his work brilliant (later, when they return to sparring, she tells him he’s just mediocre), and grounds him when he goes off about elitists—though he in fact is one. He’s so absorbed with himself and how other people feel about him and his work that he explodes when one journalist writes about his film precisely through the lens he doesn’t want it to be seen: political. “Cinema doesn’t need to have a message. It needs to have heart!” he shouts. Malcolm is so enraged, he needs Marie to find his phone so he can finish reading the review.

“Marie would be reduced to a trinket if it weren’t for Zendaya’s thoughtful interpretation of the script.”

In an effort to assert some of her own power in their relationship, Marie offers a worthy critique of Malcolm’s film and explains how his heroine is oversexualized. But Malcolm dismisses her claim because he thinks she sexualizes herself, using her see-through tank and lack of bra as evidence. But really, it’s Malcolm who objectifies her—as Levinson’s proxy and through the director’s camerawork. Should it matter what Marie’s wearing in this scene in order to take her, or even Zendaya, seriously? Perhaps that’s what Levinson wants us to wrestle with.

Because Malcolm sees Marie as nothing more than a pretty ornament he’s saved from herself. While he claims he loves her, he also tells her, “When I met you, you were a fucking pilled out-disaster! You were 20 years old!” So, why did he want to be with her? Because rescuing her made him feel like a bigger, better man—and it still does. His own insecurities and hero complex wouldn’t have it any other way. “You’re not the first broken girl I’ve known, fucked, or dated.”

Malcolm & Marie isn’t so much a story of love as it is a prototype of a stubbornly imbalanced and toxic relationship. It’s just that now, both parties know it. As much a sexual object to Malcolm as Levinson’s lens makes her to the audience, Marie would be reduced to a trinket if it weren’t for Zendaya’s thoughtful interpretation of the script.

And it’s actually Malcolm & Marie’s message, not its heart, that makes it such a searing watch. With its terrific performances, resonating dialogue, and elegant single-setting production, the film compels us to see beyond a couple clamoring across the house and acknowledge that a perpetually underestimated woman has found her voice. When Malcolm finally utters the words “thank you” by the end of the film, one song from its jazzy soundtrack lingers: Dionne Warwick’s “Get Rid of Him.”

14 Stunning Pole Routines From Amy Bond, One of the Athletes in Netflix’s Strip Down, Rise Up

Strip Down, Rise Up, the Netflix documentary from Oscar-nominated director Michèle Ohayon, introduces viewers to the healing world of pole dance through the eyes of several amateur and professional pole dancers, including Amy Bond, founder of Pole & Dance Studios in California.

Bond is a lawyer who spent years trying to escape both the societal judgment and internalized shame stemming from her past as an adult film star. She found solace in an unlikely place — a pole dancing class in a dark basement near the law school she attended — and eventually opened up her own studio in San Francisco.

“As a modern sport that is rapidly evolving in a way that progressively mirrors the strong feminism of so many of its pioneers, pole has become a sport founded in a culture of inclusion,” Bond has said about her passion-turned-career. One thing’s for sure: Bond has certainly found a home in the sport. Keep scrolling for some tricks and routines you didn’t see in the film.

Sharon Chuter’s Pull Up For Change Returns With ‘Make It Black’ Campaign

With just one hashtag—#PullUporShut Up—Sharon Chuter disrupted the beauty industry. At the height of racial tension that erupted in the summer of 2020, the Uoma Beauty founder launched the hashtag to call out brands for a lack of diversity within the companies and on social media, and ask brands to publicly disclose their number of Black employees. The social call-to-action expanded to the birth of Pull Up For Change, Chuter’s organization that set out to hold these companies accountable. In honor of Black History Month, Chuter and Pull Up For Change are launching a new campaign that reminds consumers how beautiful, timeless, and iconic the color black truly is.

The Make It Black campaign is Chuter’s way of redefining how the color black is perceived in the world. Black is luxury. Black is beautiful. Black is chic. To get the message across, Pull Up For Changed has asked a slew of beauty brands to change their packaging to the color black for the month of February.

Participating brands include Briogeo, Colourpop, Dragun Beauty, Flower Beauty, Maybelline, Morphe, NYX Professional Makeup, PUR, and Chuter’s Uoma Beauty. The limited-edition packaging will be sold exclusively at Ulta Beauty, as well as the Make It Black site and the participating brands’ websites.

“Language plays a critical role in how we perceive the world,” says Chuter. “The function of language goes beyond expressing ideas and concepts, it shapes thought and defines our collective consciousness.” As part of the Make It Black campaign, Chuter has also launched a petition to ask the Oxford English Dictionary and Merriam Webster Dictionary to change the definition of the word “black,” which has long been associated with dangerous definitions that present bias and hostility towards the Black community.

“Language should be neutral, unbiased, and reflective of our current realities. It is in this regard that the dictionary has work to do,” she adds.

For every product sold, 100 percent of the gross profits will be contributed to Pull Up For Change’s new Impact Fund, which raises funds to support Black-owned businesses and will be dispersed through live pitch contests. Black founders will submit their pitches to a forum where the public will then decide who the funding should be allocated to. Even if you don’t buy any of the iconic products, the public will be able to donate directly to the fund.

Tiffany & Co. Is Responsible for Diamonds and the Super Bowl Trophy

The first weekend in February holds importance in the sports world at large for one reason— the Super Bowl. Even if you’re not a super sports fan, you’ve probably found yourself at a tailgate party tuning in (or just watching the ads and halftime show). For those who had to Google which teams are playing this Sunday, here is a fashion factoid for the less-than-sporty spectators of the Big Game: Tiffany & Co. makes the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Tiffany & Co. created the iconic trophy back in 1967 based on a quick sketch on a napkin by former VP Oscar Riedener, and the jeweler has been producing the trophy every year since. In 1970, it was renamed for the famed Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi. The design includes a regulation-sized football perched atop a stand, suspended in midair, entirely composed of Tiffany’s finest sterling silver. The trophy weighs in at seven pounds and takes almost four months to complete. Tiffany’s employs traditional silversmith techniques when making the trophy, ensuring the trophy will stand the test of time and represent the integrity of the team’s success.

The same workshop that has created some of the most recognizable jewelry for the last 200 years is also responsible for hand-engraving the name of the winning team after the Super Bowl. Tiffany & Co. also creates sports trophies for the U.S. Open, The World Series, and the NBA Championship. Don’t the most winning athletes in the world deserve the world’s best hardware on their shelves?

Amanda Gorman Wears Canadian Label Greta Constantine on the Cover of Time

Photography Alex Wong/Getty Images

One of the Greta Constantine designers filled us in on how it happened.

It’s safe to say that Amanda Gorman is having a moment. The 22-year-old National Youth Poet Laureate captivated people worldwide with an inspiring appearance at U.S. President Joe Biden’s January 20 inauguration ceremony. Clad in a marigold custom Prada coat and ruby satin headband and earrings gifted by one Oprah Winfrey, the young writer recited an original poem entitled “The Hill We Climb.” Shortly thereafter, the Harvard graduate signed a contract with IMG Models and now, she appears on the March cover of Time Magazine—wearing a sunny yellow creation by Canadian designers Greta Constantine, no less! (To make the cover even more compelling, Gorman converses with none other than former first lady Michelle Obama about art and identity in the accompanying feature.)

To say this is major would be an understatement. We caught up with one half of the Greta Constantine design duo, Kirk Pickersgill, who started the brand in 2006 with Stephen Wong, to get the inside scoop on how this milestone unfolded.

Congratulations! Tell us how this happened.

From start to end, the process was truly organic. We received a note from our showroom team in Los Angeles that a stylist we often work with, Jason Bolden, was in need of a pair of dresses from our Spring 2021 collection for Amanda Gorman. The dresses were currently in production but how could we say no! The garments were packed and sent overnight to Los Angeles and we were crossing our fingers that — considering the ongoing situation and the challenges so many of the couriers are encountering — it would even arrive in time. Once we saw the package was signed for, we knew the first hurdle had been crossed but the next hurdle would be even tougher.

Fast forward to the day of the shoot and as we were packing up to leave the studio, an email came through sharing that the garment had been photographed. Exciting, but as the team pointed out, this was no guarantee of inclusion in the publication. That evening, I had ordered pizza and with RuPaul’s Drag Race in the background, I received a text message from Brooke, the founder of our LA showroom, asking me to call her. Seconds later, I had a trio of calls coming through: one from my colleague Jesse, who oversees our communications and sales, another from Brooke herself, and a third from an unknown number which I assumed (correctly) was the pizza delivery driver. Priorities being priorities, I grabbed the pizza and dialled the other two back.

“It’s official,” Brooke said. “You got the cover.” I was speechless, and in a way, I still am.

Can you describe the dress in your own words? That yellow is so joyful.

The dress is from the Greta Constantine Spring 2021 collection. We began designing this collection in August 2020. After months of panic and fear brought along by the ongoing situation, we wanted garments that excited us — styles that evoked a sense of hope. Sweatpants, for all their comfort, don’t inspire you to begin your morning on a high. Somber colours don’t inject your afternoon with a smile. And by committing to producing bright, structural garments, we were looking to bring a smile on the face of both the wearer and the beholder.

If you look at the look book image itself (below), the model is also smiling. After months where we had no choice but to take everything seriously, this was the dress that would invite you to let your guard down and simply be.

What was your reaction to finding out that Amanda Gorman was wearing Greta Constantine on the cover of Time?

Truthfully, I grew very emotional. It was a gush of excitement. The accomplishment was a testament to our hardworking team, from the pattern drafter to the cutters, sewing, quality controllers, and packers. That garment was the product of not one but many.

It was also validation of our brand. It was recognition of our Jamaican roots and Canadian upbringing. It was an approval to be and look different in an industry that has a tendency to look very much the same. And what excited me most was that this photograph was so much more than the fashion. It was about capturing a moment in history that celebrates Black creativity in all of its beautiful, challenging, inspiring forms.

How are you going to celebrate this moment?

In all honesty, the celebration is the image itself and the fact that we are all part of this historic moment. The outpouring of support has been overwhelming in the best way. Seeing the faces of our team light up at the recognition tastes so much better than Champagne ever can. That’s not to say, of course, that there isn’t Champagne to be had.

What’s your mood after experiencing this milestone and as we enter the second month of 2021?

I am elated. I am proud of the resilience we have shown to find ways to survive at a time when our industry, from independent designers to retailers, is hurting. There is so much more we must do to get through this but this photograph will keep me pushing, creating, and dreaming.

Nia Dennis Took the Internet by Storm 2 Years in a Row — Check Out More of Her Stellar Routines

NCAA gymnastics is a world of perfect 10s, team spirit, and crowd-pleasing floor routines that, on occasion, go massively viral. UCLA senior Nia Dennis has twice lit up the internet with powerhouse performances that paid homage to Black music and culture.

Dennis’s 2020 routine was sheer “Black Excellence,” as now-VP Kamala Harris tweeted — with Beyoncé songs and fierce moves that were a nod to the artist’s Homecoming documentary. “Last year, I was going for a majorettes Beyoncé vibe,” Dennis told People, referencing HBCU dancelines.

Dennis, who has said that Black culture in gymnastics is “heavily overlooked,” debuted another dynamic tribute, this time with a mashup of hits from artists like Kendrick Lamar and Missy Elliott. In her 2021 floor routine, choreographed by professional dancer BJ Das, Dennis kneeled and raised a fist in the air evoking the Black Lives Matter protests, and also included a step sequence in honor of her father who was a member of a Black fraternity in college.

Before UCLA, the Ohio native was an elite gymnast. She spent time on both the senior and junior national teams and finished first all around for her division at the 2017 Women’s Junior Olympic National Championships. Ahead, check out Dennis in all her glory. You’ll find her viral routines (in case you missed them), more UCLA greatness, as well as performances from her pre-college gymnastics career. She rocks it on floor, but she shines on all four events!
