Lavinia Has a Questionable New Suitor in an Exclusive Clip From Dickinson Season 2

After a seemingly endless wait (434 days, to be exact) Dickinson is finally returning to our screens, with the first three episodes of season 2 dropping on Apple TV+ on Friday, Jan. 8. As the inventive series continues to reimagine the life and work of Emily Dickinson (played by Hailee Steinfeld), the newest installment will see the great American poet wrestle with writer’s block, potential fame, and her evolving relationship with her sister-in-law/lover Sue (Ella Hunt). As for her little sister, the delightfully flighty Lavinia (Anna Baryshnikov), her problems are a bit closer to home.

Lavinia spent season 1 longing to conform to the era’s expectations of affluent womanhood, but now, she’s ready to follow in her older sister’s boundary-pushing footsteps. That’s complicated by the arrival of Henry “Ship” Shipley (Pico Alexander), a former flame boarding at the Dickinson house. Naturally, he’s approaching the arrangement with ulterior motives: making a wife out of “pure, simple, quiet, traditional” Lavinia. She’s not having it. ELLE.com has an exclusive clip of Lavinia and Ship from the season 2 premiere, “Fame is a fickle food,” which you can watch above.

Of the new season, Steinfeld told ELLE.com last year, “Emily finding her place, her confidence as a writer, as a woman—it’s all taken to the next level. Of course, it wouldn’t be Dickinson if it wasn’t wild and messy and heartbreaking and funny. It’s got it all times 10.”

LeBron James Is Ready to Buy WNBA Team From Kelly Loeffler After the Georgia Runoffs

LeBron James is looking to assemble an ownership group to purchase the Atlanta Dream of the WNBA from Kelly Loeffler. On Jan. 6, it was projected that the Republican Senator had lost the Georgia runoff race to Rev. Raphael Warnock, and the four-time NBA champion was ready to celebrate. “Think I’m gone put together an ownership group for The Dream. Whose in? #BlackVotesMatter,” James tweeted. Despite Loeffler being the co-owner of the Atlanta basketball team since 2011, the players took a strong stand against her throughout the last season, largely because of her blatant criticism of the racial justice movement.

Being that Loeffler was the co-owner of their team, the women never mentioned her name in their stand against her. However, their actions spoke volumes. They wore shirts that read “Vote Warnock” and helped boost recognition for Loeffler’s opponent on a national level. It’s even being reported that Warnock was polling at nine percent when the team started campaigning for him. It’s a huge win for the country and for Warnock, who made history as the state’s first Black senator.

Now, James is ready to rally a group to take the team from her, and he’s even got the support of people like Kevin Hart and MLB star Mookie Betts, who’ve both expressed a desire to get in on the purchase. Kerry Washington tweeted that it “would be a DREAM come true.”

The WNBA has been at the forefront of the social justice movement for years, but especially over the last year when they dedicated the 2019-20 season to social justice efforts. James has also made it clear that he will not “shut up and dribble” and has used his platform to speak out against President Donald Trump and the racist rhetoric throughout his term. It’s unknown if the purchase of the team is actually going to take place, but there’s no denying that James would be a dream co-owner.

The Biggest and Boldest Makeup Trends of 2021, According to Sir John

What are your makeup aspirations for 2021? What’s on the mood board? For celebrity makeup artist Sir John—you’ve seen his work on both Beyoncé and Barbie—he finds inspiration on Instagram. “I just save them all [his favorite IG posts] to the backend, and that’s kind of the mood board at the moment,” he explains. His hope for our mood boards? “Just seeing a full look, seeing a lip and an eye,” he says. To help us get started on all our best beauty looks of 2021, SJ broke down some of the biggest trends for the new year. For one, he wants you to try “tightlining” and put down the contour brush. Below, Sir John’s definitive guide for the biggest makeup trends of 2021. Happy creating!

Less is more

If 2020 did teach us anything, it was that skincare should be priority one, and doing a mask at 2 p.m. on a Wednesday is totally acceptable, if not necessary. “I think in terms of makeup trends, what will be huge is more approach to skin,” SJ explains.“There’s going to be an ease and maneuverability around owning your skin and loving the skin that you have and not having to lacquer it from forehead to chin—not having the baking and the contouring and so many different dramatic ways to change oneself.”

It’s all about the eyes (and always has been)

Masks don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, making it the perfect time to invest in a gorgeous eye look. “I do believe that eyes will be big,” says SJ. “People are still going to love lashes, still going to love brows, and they’re always going to be a feature. They were a feature 2,000 years ago in Mesopotamia, and they’re going to be a feature in 2088.”

Long live the statement lip

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Sir John predicts the move will be more lip stains in 2021. “If no other time, no other year, to find out if these claims of long-wear or our lip stains really work,” explains SJ. “The goal now is to find out how long this lip will anchor to my mouth without drying my lips out?” SJ recommends doing a bit of self-discovery to find the perfect long-wear lipstick for you. The one test your lippie must pass, he says, is the ability to hydrate.

“If you’re wearing a super matte and you don’t want your lip texture to change, use eye cream over lip balm,” he explains. “An eye cream is going to be a great way to hydrate your lips. The skin of your eyes and the skin of your lips is so thin; it’s almost transparent.”

You must try ‘tightlining’ in 2021

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

“Tightlining is when you lift up your lash line slightly and line that area with a waterproof black pencil, and so that right underneath your lashes,” explains SJ. “What that does is it makes all of your lashes extremely dense, so black and thick from the root, and it’s really almost like an optical illusion.” The best part of the beauty trick is that no one knows that they see a liner, but it gives you a dazzling eye-line.

Meet sculpting 2.0

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Sir John says aggressive forms of contouring are out. What’s in? “I think sculpting is the 2.0 of where we need to go,” he adds. “Invisible sculpting, softer appearances when it comes to the structure of our face, but all of these hard lines, or I like to call them VCLs, visible counter lines, need to go or need to stay in 2020.” Harsh lines were so 2020.

And here’s what you need in your 2021 beauty kit:

“A few products we should add to our arsenal would be the NARS eyeshadow primer, the invisible eye shadow primer by NARS, for sure,” says SJ. “Hands down, it’s the best one I’ve ever worked with.”

He also suggests L’Oreal Mega Air Volume Mascara. “There’s no comparison, best mascara in the game right now, in terms of getting the most beautiful, fluffy, dense bit of lashes around,” says SJ.

Regarding skincare, SJ recommends the Tata Harper Resurfacing Peel and Supergoop’s SPF 40, the latter of which he uses as a primer because of its invisibility. He likes that the peel is not aggressive (aka won’t cause major irritation) but increases cell turnover, meaning out with the bad (debris of 2020) and in with the good (supple gorgeous skin in 2021).

His last recommendation is L’Oreal Paris Night Serum Retinol. “The nighttime retinol would be my favorite,” he says. “Also, the nighttime glycolic, which is farmer-grade glycolic acid.”

Jewellery Brand Annalay Highlights the Positive Power of Fashion

Annalay Zodiac Power Necklace ($54). Photography courtesy of Annalay.

The brand’s founder talks connection, creativity and why you should dress up for yourself.

With the winter doldrums creeping in to layer on top of the continuing COVID-19 crisis, you might find yourself in a slump when it comes to feeling inspired, upbeat and optimistic right now. But Toronto-based jewellery entrepreneur Annalay Ajooway-Tingling offers a sunnier outlook for our current mood – not just through her brand’s travel-influenced designs, but also by way of the reflections on her own journey previous to and throughout the pandemic.

Ajooway-Tingling’s first experience in the fashion industry came in her early twenties: while in university, she was involved in the modelling and acting sphere. “I found out quickly that I was considered ‘too curvy’ at the time to be taken seriously as a print model,” she recalls. “So I found myself in television, and that went really well. I had a nice run of high-profile commercials and I really enjoyed it.”

But eventually Ajooway-Tingling – who describes herself as “someone always seeking knowledge and experiences” while searching for answers to life’s big questions (“What’s my purpose? Why are we here? What’s the best way to live our lives?”) – says she wasn’t finding satisfaction with where she was in life. “I wasn’t getting those answers working in that industry, or at school,” she says.

Aspiring to pursue a life with meaning, Ajooway-Tingling began traveling with the man who ultimately became the father of her children. During their decade of globe-trotting, Ajooway-Tingling ended up in India. “I focused my attention on meditation and spirituality and world culture and different viewpoints on life and unity,” she says.

Ajooway-Tingling had read about a remote monastery in the Himalayas and decided to venture there herself, and after serendipitously meeting the brother of one of the residing monks the day after her arrival she found herself spending several months at the monastery when they asked her to teach them English. It was a powerful and transformative time.

One of the key things she learned while there was about her preconceived notions regarding their lives. “Something I hadn’t thought about was how naturally joyous they were,” she says about her ideas of monastic living, before delving into it herself. “No matter what happened, they made sure they were laughing throughout the day.”

After a while, Ajooway-Tingling began to miss her home, and she returned to Canada with creative juices flowing. The vibrant, diversely-decorative cultures she’d found herself immersed in while traveling – not to mention the ability to unify two people simply by complimenting someone on what they’re wearing – motivated her to launch her eponymous jewellery label in 2013.

The brand’s selection arouses all manner of vibes, from wanderlust (thanks to the use of materials like Cowrie shells) to cosmic. Recently, Canadian actress Tara Spencer-Nairn posted about purchasing a few pieces from Annalay including a Zodiac-themed pendant – not only something very intimate, but a look that speaks to the current surge of interest in astrology.

Being attuned to what we’re all feeling is a strength of Ajooway-Tingling’s, who says that during the summer months of the pandemic, she found herself walking Toronto’s shoreline in order to capture transportive images that would ignite a bit of self-soothing and sense of local discovery within the Annalay community.

“When the pandemic started to unravel, I thought to myself, you have two paths you could walk right now,” she says about being confronted with a business decision; not only was she completing her own school work because she was continuing her education, but she had the task of being a single parent to children who were now always home. “I thought, do I stop this or pause it, or do I amplify it?”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Ajooway-Tingling chose to amplify as she sensed her own tenacity and curiosity could be a touchstone for others who were suffering any manner of lockdown feelings. And she highlights the uplifting quality of self-expression through dressing as another realm of positivity, noting that she’s always thrilled to receive messages from customers who say they can’t wait to wear their piece around the house to brighten their day.

“Before, I think there was this sense of, where can I wear this,” she says about how she feels the general perception of style has shifted over the year. “I think the pandemic has changed people’s mindset in terms of thinking, I love something but I need an occasion to wear it, as opposed to I love it [and] I deserve to wear it for myself.” She adds with a laugh that her kids will often ask where she’s headed all dressed up, to which she could respond with, “I have to go to the post office” or sometimes, just the kitchen.

The gusto with which Ajooway-Tingling approaches everyday life is palpable, and her thoughts moving into 2021 are just as enthusiastic despite the myriad personal and professional hardships that everyone is facing. “I’m feeling good because the pandemic was scary but we’ve seen how resilient we are,” she notes, saying that she’s personally “taking everything I’ve learned and applying it very consciously.” This includes “not being intimidated by technology” – something we rely on more heavily than ever before. And this idea is followed by a piece of advice she offers to us all. “[It’s about] empowerment and not intimidation,” she says. “Find where you feel comfortable, and move with that.”

Why Kim Kardashian ‘Knows’ Her Marriage to Kanye West Is Over: Months in Counseling, a Big Fight, and More

Last night, Page Six broke the news that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are close to filing for divorce. People, E!, TMZ, Entertainment Tonight, and Us Weekly later published their own reports, with sources telling the outlets that Kardashian hasn’t filed yet but knows her marriage has been over for a while. The sources collectively painted a stark picture of what things are like in the Kardashian-West marriage now and why the relationship fell apart.

Here, all that has come out about why the two are separating.

Page Six spoke to multiple sources, who gave insight on why the relationship isn’t working for Kardashian or West.

Kardashian and West are separating in part because Kardashian has reached her limit with West. “She is serious about taking the bar exam and becoming a lawyer, she is serious about her prison reform campaign,” one source said. “Meanwhile Kanye is talking about running for president and saying other crazy s–t, and she’s just had enough of it.”

West, meanwhile, has had enough of the Kardashian family and their reality show. “[He] is completely over the entire family…He wants nothing to do with them,” a second source said. That source added that he finds their show now to be “unbearable.”

TMZ revealed Kardashian and West are in counseling, with divorce very much on the table. Their issues aren’t “contentious,” but they have “a lot of differences,” from lifestyle to politics.

The outlet was told by multiple sources that Kardashian and West have been living separately “for a few months,” with West based in Wyoming and Kardashian based in Los Angeles. The outlet described their marriage as being in “deep trouble” for the second half of 2020. “Kim was ready to pull the plug on the marriage at one point, but it was when Kanye was going through a serious bipolar episode and she felt it was cruel to do it when he wasn’t well,” the outlet wrote.

The outlet also detailed why they’re having issues, describing the problems as “neither contentious nor ugly, but they do have lots of differences from lifestyle to politics. They are, however, fully aligned on parenting.” Sources emphasized to TMZ that there’s no third party.

People echoed TMZ’s report that Kardashian and West are in counseling, adding West “knows” Kardashian is “done” with the marriage. Kardashian filing for divorce “will happen eventually, but she’s waffling,” one source said.

One of People‘s sources got insight on how West is feeling about that. “She has had enough,” that source said, “and she told him that she wants some space to figure out her future.”

West is bracing for the filing, although he doesn’t know when it’ll happen, People reports. The outlet’s source said, “He’s okay. He’s sad, but okay. He knows the inevitable will happen, and he knows that it’s coming soon.”

A second source told People that they’re still trying to save their marriage, calling it “not over yet.” A third source explained, “Kim and Kanye are in counseling and exploring their options. They have been working on their marriage for a long time, but no decision has been made.”

Us Weekly reports that Kardashian and West had a big fight in December that was a final straw. More generally, a source said, Kardashian has struggled to deal with West’s “unpredictable” behavior and resistance to getting treatment for his mental health.

In the summer of 2020, Kardashian and West, who suffers from bipolar depression, had been on the cusp of divorcing and went on an emergency vacation to try to save their marriage. West had been in the midst of a manic episode leading up to that trip. During a July South Carolina campaign rally, West brought up the possibility of Kardashian divorcing him because he publicly spoke about how he and Kardashian discussed terminating her first pregnancy with North West during an anti-abortion rant.

People reported in September that West promised on that trip to take his medication. He didn’t keep his word. “He’s off his meds,” the source claimed at the time. “He promised he’d stay on them. The last time, part of his negotiation with Kim was that he’d get back on his medication and he would work very hard to control his impulses. He made a lot of promises. And now those promises are broken, less than a month later.”

Now, Us Weekly was told by a source that Kardashian is just done. “Kim is done dealing with Kanye’s unpredictable behavior, she has tried to get him into treatment for his mental health and all attempts have been unsuccessful,” the source said. “No one can tell Kanye what to do other than Kanye.” Kardashian’s friends, the source added, “are surprised she has waited this long to file for divorce.”

A source told Us in a separate article that the couple had a bad fight in December that really changed their dynamic. “They had a big fight in early December,” the source said. “Kanye blew up at Kim and she was really upset. Things between them don’t seem to have healed since that.”

A second source said that a divorce happening was “only a matter of time,” especially after his North West anti-abortion rant remarks. “She [Kardashian] didn’t just walk away,” that source said. “The comments about North and the abortion were the final confirmation. She will protect the children first, always.”

E! reports that Kardashian knows her marriage is over and is just trying to make the best decision for their four children—North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm—before making her final choice and filing for divorce.

One source said, “They’ve seen each other for the sake of the kids but have been living separately. Kim knows the marriage is over. She’s known for a while.”

The source added, “It’s not about the marriage anymore, she’ll always care for Kanye but it’s over between them. Kim is only focused on what’s best for the kids. It’s a tough decision for her and she’s figuring it out.”

Entertainment Tonight reports that Kardashian and West haven’t made “much headway” in counseling after being in it for several months, and Kardashian is dedicated to ending things amicably with West if she files.

“She knows what’s best for her and their kids, so if things ended she would want them to end amicably so they can co-parent together as best as possible,” the source said. “They have been living separate lives for months, so any issues they’re having aren’t a surprise to Kim’s family or friends. Kanye has been wanting to make it work, and Kim has tried for so long.”

“Kanye and Kim have been trying to save their marriage but it’s been difficult when he acts out,” the source added. “She is focused on raising her kids and making sure they’re in a safe, stable environment. [Kardashian] has felt overwhelmed trying to take care of him too.”

These Cheese-Packed Keto Charcuterie Boards Are What Low-Carb Dreams Are Made Of

Charcuterie boards have gotten mega-creative (featuring pancakes, hot chocolate ingredients, and sweet holiday treats), and keto charcuterie boards are the latest theme that we’re loving. With the keto diet’s focus on healthy fats like nuts, cheese, and meat like pork and beef, keto-themed charcuterie boards don’t look too different from the traditional meat, cheese, and cracker spreads we’re used to seeing — just swap out regular crackers for low-carb, keto-friendly alternatives (or skip them altogether) and you’re on your way.

The keto diet’s macro breakdown is about 70 to 80 percent fat, 15 to 20 percent protein, and five to 10 percent carbs, so if you’re inspired to whip up your own keto charcuterie board, aiming for those ratios is a good goal. Of course, you also want to choose foods that fit within your keto plan, like high-fat cheese, low-sugar fruits (such as berries or avocados), meat, and low-carb veggies (like cauliflower, celery, and cucumbers). Now let’s get to the good stuff! Check out some truly scrumptious, healthy fat-filled keto charcuterie boards ahead.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Are Reportedly Filing for Divorce ‘Imminently’

kim kardashian and kanye west

Dimitrios KambourisGetty Images

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s marriage is about to end, Page Six is reporting. The outlet claimed multiple sources told them that a divorce filing “is imminent.” “They are keeping it low-key but they are done,” one source said. “Kim has hired [top celebrity divorce attorney] Laura Wasser and they are in settlement talks.”

The source added that West’s political ambitions were part of what drove Kardashian to end their marriage. “She is serious about taking the bar exam and becoming a lawyer, she is serious about her prison reform campaign,” the source said. “Meanwhile Kanye is talking about running for president and saying other crazy sh*t, and she’s just had enough of it.”

A separate source told the outlet that West had become uncomfortable with the Kardashian family and their reality show lives. West “is completely over the entire family…He wants nothing to do with them,” that source said. The source added that West now finds their reality show “unbearable.”

West and Kardashian got married in 2014. The couple shares four children: North, 7; Saint, 5; Chicago, 2; and Psalm, 1.

Reports of West and Kardashian splitting comes less than a month after Entertainment Tonight reported that Kardashian was deciding whether or not she wanted to stay together with West longterm. Entertainment Tonight‘s source said in early December, “Kim is exhausted from continually trying but keeps their vows in mind when making any pertinent decisions. And Kanye is working on his psychological health and mental state. The family and Kanye are still in contact and everyone wants the best for Kanye, Kim, their kids and the rest of the family.”

The source added that Kardashian believes West “needs to work on himself before he can work on the well-being of anyone else,” and that “Kim’s family will support her in any decision she makes, but she feels that the most important thing to recognize before making any choice is realizing what’s best for the kids, herself, Kanye and the rest of the family, essentially in that order.”

Tiffany & Co. Reimagines 1939 With A New Acquisition: An 80-Carat Diamond

It’s crystal clear that the opulence of the early 20th century is revived with Tiffany & Co.’s latest acquisition: an archival Tiffany High Jewelry Necklace from 1939’s World’s Fair that will be rebuffed and resold. Before reaching the public’s eye in 2022, the historic necklace’s center stone, a D-color oval diamond surpassing 80 carats, will find itself with a new flair, reset by Tiffany artisans in New York City. It is expected to be the most expensive diamond ever offered by Tiffany & Co., eclipsed only by the 128.54 carat Tiffany Diamond, which is famously not for sale (worn by both Audrey Hepburn and Lady Gaga alike).

Taking a look back at the necklace’s origins, its sizable aquamarine and diamond forms seduced the millions of viewers who came to admire the spectacle nearly a century ago. The 1939 World’s Fair—notable for being the second most expensive World’s Fair in America at the time—promised a glimpse into “the world of Tomorrow” and an opportunity to dream of an effervescent future. Following the fair, the necklace was presented at Tiffany & Co.’s grand opening of its iconic Fifth Avenue flagship store in 1940—an event that will be rebirthed at its upcoming reopening.

Since January 2020, Tiffany & Co.’s Manhattan store closed its doors to the public to embark on a two-year-long renovation, leaving jewel-obsessed customers longing for its return. The highly anticipated reopening in 2022 will be immortalized with the unveiling of the modernized necklace, an act that parallels the store’s original debut.

“What better way to mark the opening of our transformed Tiffany flagship store in 2022 than to reimagine this incredible necklace from the 1939 World’s Fair, one of our most celebrated pieces when we opened our doors on 57th Street and Fifth Avenue for the first time,” said Victoria Reynolds, Tiffany & Co. Chief Gemologist. “The new necklace perfectly reflects our brand heritage as a New York luxury jeweler, whose founder was known as the ‘King of Diamonds.’”

Although it’s certain that the price of the renewed necklace will find its way upwards of eight figures, a specific number isn’t set in stone just yet.

These Crispy Air-Fried Mashed Potato Fries Have a Secret High-Protein Ingredient

You know French fries aren’t the healthiest food you can eat because they’re deep fried in oil, but you still want them! Here’s a healthy French fry recipe made with three ingredients: potatoes, white beans, and a little plant milk. The potatoes are mashed without any butter so they’re vegan, and the crisp you crave comes from the air fryer, not from oil.

I cooked the potatoes in my pressure cooker, but you can just boil them on the stove. And if you don’t have an air fryer, just bake them in your oven — they come out just as crunchy, but take a little more time to cook. This recipe combines the creamy texture of mashed potatoes with the crispy crunch of fries — it’s so damn delicious!

Scared of the carbs in potatoes, you say? Potatoes are complex carbs, so they’re healthy, satiating, and full of fiber and protein. Potatoes are also naturally high in vitamin C — one medium baked potato offers almost 50 percent of your daily amount, so they benefit your immune system. Potatoes have a bad reputation for being high in calories and fat, but really it’s the butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, and oil that people tend to pair them with that add on — one medium potato (285 grams) is 265 calories.

Eating potatoes may help lower blood pressure, as the skin contains potassium (which is why I left the skin on these taters). The B6 vitamins in potatoes also improve brain function, and the high-fiber content improves digestion. One serving (five fries) offers almost 10 grams of filling fiber and 8.5 grams of protein. Praise the mighty potato!

This recipe has minor flavoring from a little garlic powder and salt, but you can easily leave those out if you prefer, or jazz up this recipe by adding rosemary, parsley, or chopped sun-dried tomatoes to the mashed potatoes before air frying. However you doll up them up, just be sure to eat them straight out of the oven to enjoy the maximum amount of warm crispy goodness!

Healthy Air Fried Mashed Potato French Fries Recipe

Ingredients

  1. 2 pounds of white potatoes
    15-ounce can of cannellini beans
1/4 cup unsweetened cashew milk (or other dairy-free milk)
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
    1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
1 to 4 tablespoons of the leftover potato water (as needed)

Directions

  1. Wash the raw potatoes and cut them into two- to three-inch chunks.
  2. If you’re cooking the potatoes in your pressure cooker, add one cup of water to the bottom of the inner pot. Insert a metal steamer rack trivet and place the cut up potatoes on top. Secure the lid and make sure it’s set to the sealing position. Select the manual setting and cook on high pressure for six minutes. Allow the pressure to naturally release for 15 minutes.

If boiling the potatoes, add six cups of water to a big pot with the cut up potatoes (if you add potatoes to boiling water, the potatoes may cook unevenly). Turn on high heat until the water is boiling. Then lower the heat to low to maintain a simmer, and cover the pot. Cook for about 15 minutes or until you can easily poke through the potatoes with a fork.

For either method, reserve a few tablespoons of the leftover water to use for mashing.

  3. Add cooked potatoes to a mixing bowl with the beans, cashew milk, garlic powder, and salt, and mash using a masher or fork. If the mashed potatoes seem dry, add a tablespoon at a time of the reserved potato water. You want this to be a creamy mashed potato consistency, so add liquid as needed. You’ll still be able to see pieces of unmashed white beans and potato skin, so if you don’t like that, you can mash your potatoes in a food processor.
  4. Line an 8×11-inch pan with parchment paper and spread the mashed potato mixture evenly with a spatula. Allow to chill uncovered in the fridge for at least one hour.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 425 degrees (I used the air fryer setting on my oven but you can also just bake). Lift the parchment paper with the mashed potatoes out of the pan and put it on the counter or a cutting board. Cut the chilled mashed potatoes into 1×4-inch “fries;” I was able to cut 20 pieces.
  6. Arrange them on the air fryer tray with a little space between them.
  7. Air fry for 25 to 30 minutes, or longer for crispier edges. If you’re baking these in an oven, carefully flip them halfway to cook both sides evenly.
  8. Serve warm and enjoy!

Kim Kardashian West’s Next Trick? Skincare, Of Course

kim kardashian west

Dimitrios KambourisGetty Images

Of all the celebrity skincare routines out there, very few are as interesting—and expensive—as Kimberly Kardashian West’s. After all, she is the one who helped popularize the “vampire facial” with a single selfie of her bloodied face in 2013. So it makes sense that the mogul is expanding her KKW Beauty brand to other offerings, including skincare.

In June, Kardashian-West sold a 20 percent stake of her KKW Beauty for $200 million to Coty. Now that the deal is officially closed, Coty is rolling out its plans to make Kim K a whole lot richer. According to WWD, Coty plans to develop skincare, haircare, personal care, and nail products at some point in 2022.

“Kim shares our true passion for beauty products, and this acquisition allows us to leverage our respective strengths for mutual benefit and value creation,” Sue Nabi, Coty’s chief executive officer, said in a statement. A trusted source in beauty, Kim K launched KKW Beauty in 2017 with contour kits before expanding to fragrance shortly after. With this deal, Nabi hopes to bring “scientific knowledge around formulation to the table, while Kardashian West will bring a massive following,” WWD explained.

Kim K isn’t the only sister in the Coty family. Coty is also the company behind Kylie Jenner’s namesake beauty brands Kylie Cosmetics and Kylie Skin. In 2019, Jenner cemented her status as a billionaire when she sold Kylie a 51 percent stake of Kylie Cosmetics—her beauty brand known for its lip kits—to Coty for $600 million.

How Tarot Cards Can Help You Get a Handle on 2021

Intrigued by tarot? “Tarot is an extremely helpful introspective tool for those who are open to exploring themselves and the energies that they’re working with,” says Canadian clarity coach Chris Corsini. We spoke to Corsini to understand how can tarot cards can help us take on 2021 with purpose and intention. (For an astrologer’s take on the year ahead, read this.)

What are the benefits of tarot?

Tarot assists with “shadow work,” essentially, examining the parts of ourselves we don’t like or were taught not to like because of societal, religious or cultural norms. “Once you start exploring tarot,” says Corsini, “you can begin to question those things. You start asking yourself: do I believe this? Is this something I still stand by?”

Note: Tarot is not fortune telling, nor is it astrology. Rather, it’s more of a confirmation of what you are already feeling, which can help people feel empowered in their decision making.

Can anyone use tarot cards?

Short answer: Yes. “Sit down and start pulling cards, and familiarize yourself with what’s coming up,” says Corsini. “The booklets that come with the deck are always very helpful, but remember that’s just a jumping off point.” For example, if you pull a card and it indicates something to you personally– go with that. Just because the card doesn’t precisely represent that doesn’t mean your interpretation is wrong. “Your intuition is going to guide you better than a booklet,” he says. (For a primer on tarot and a detailed breakdown of what each card symbolizes, go here).

Corsini recommends any new tarot user attend a workshop; he offers them in both English and ASL on a pay-what-you-can basis). Podcasts are another great resource; Corsini likes Tarot for the Wild Soul with Lindsay Mack. Biddy Tarot courses and booklets are also a popular educational option.

How often should I pull tarot cards?

“When people begin on their tarot journey, I always tell them to set a limit,” says Corsini. “You will drive yourself crazy if you ask every question and are pulling 35 cards a day – don’t do that.” Create a ceremony for yourself once a week, max. Another good way to structure your readings could be every new and full moon (so twice a month). “Pull cards for friends or relatives if you want to add more than one reading a week for practice,” he suggests. This is just a guideline for beginners, notes Corsini, who pulls three cards every morning – one each for his body, mind and soul – and asks, what energies am I working with today?

What other questions should I ask the tarot deck?

The answer to this will be very personal, however Corsini suggests the following to get started: where’s my energy best served right now? Where is my attention best spent? What do I need to let go of? What do I want to bring in? Is this good for me? Is this something that is in alignment with my path? Should I take action? What is the potential outcome if I continue to behave this way?

This year is a good time to ask questions in general, says Corsini. “There’s so much information flying around right now. This will lead people to question their beliefs, which is good, but then they can also be misled,” he explains. “Do your research, ask more questions, talk to your friends, talk to your communities and build new ones. Be open to conversations.”

What does tarot tell us is coming in 2021?

Again, the answer to this will be personal, but looking at collective energy, Corsini shared this: it’s not going to be a breeze. Expect slowdowns until May. “Don’t make any major moves, don’t rush anything,” he says. “It’s a time for planning, slowing down and taking time for yourself.” Of course, life goes on and you should always listen to your own intuition if you’re offered something big, like a promotion, during that period says Corsini.

Come summer, you will begin to get answers, clarity and/or results.  Letting go of old structures will be a theme that begins during this time, and will carry on during the fall and winter. September through the end of the year will require patience once again – but expect some wins as well. “In order to get to the next cycle, we need to go through a release again,” says Corisini. “Let go of the people and things that aren’t in line with the results that just showed up for you earlier in the year.”

What Is Afterpay Canada and Should I Use It?

Ariana Grande said it best when she crooned “I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it” in her hit 2019 song “7 Rings.” While Grande was talking about her own spending habits (and the fact that, as a millionaire, she can effectively buy whatever the heck she wants without a second thought), the mentality can similarly be applied to the spending habits—or at least shopping mentality—of even non-superstars. Because for many people, buying things is super fun! But not *as* fun? Budgeting or thinking about the money needed to save up and buy said things. Which is where Afterpay comes in. The popular online installment payment program—which has been running in Australia, the U.K., New Zealand and the U.S. for the past six years—launched in Canada in August 2020, allowing Canadian consumers to pay for purchases from brands like Aritzia, Mary Young and Roots in four installments. (Translation: You can receive those über coveted Aritzia Melina pants ASAP, without having to pay for them in full upfront.) It’s a payment program that leans *heavily* into the idea of instant gratification and seems almost too good to be true, but how *exactly* does it work? And also, seriously, what’s the catch?

Here, everything you need to know about Afterpay and installment programs like it including whether or not they are, in fact, too good to be true.

So, what exactly *is* Afterpay and how does it work?

If you’re a frequent online shopper, chances are that you’ve come across Afterpay in some capacity while perusing Reformation late at night. (The company *does* currently work with over 48,000 retailers globally, according to Afterpay, which is no small number.) Afterpay is an installment payment plan that breaks down the price of a product into multiple smaller, interest-free installments. So for example, if a product is $100, with Afterpay, a consumer would pay $25 right away, and then $25 every two weeks for the next six weeks (so four payments in total). The best part? Your item ships out immediately, meaning that you don’t have to wait until you’ve completed payments to rock your latest purchase.

With Afterpay (as well as a few other options like PayBright, QuadPay and Sezzle), consumers can choose to use either their debit or credit card to make purchases. Afterpay encourages using debit to ensure that payments come from your bank account as opposed to racking up on a credit card, which can potentially lead to debt. “Our model is really to avoid overspending and to avoid getting into debt,” says Melissa Davis, Afterpay’s head of North America. “So we never charge any interest or any additional fees above and beyond the price of the product, which is very different than some of our competitors that do have products that charge the customers significant financing charges.” With no need for credit checks or for consumers to provide their social security numbers, “it’s really making sure that the consumers are not getting into any kind of revolving debt and [are] able to just pay off their debit card [with] funds that they currently have available,” she continues. “Our model is very simple and unique, but it’s what makes the customer love and loyalty so strong because when you see Afterpay, you always know exactly what product you’re going to get.”

Why does it seem like payment plans like Afterpay are suddenly everywhere?

And it’s a product that’s seemingly in high demand. While Afterpay launched in Canada in August 2020, it’s far from the only installment payment plan available to Canadians, who can also shop using services like PayBright, Sezzle, QuadPay, Splitit and Affirm. And globally, there’s a demand for these types of services. According to Davis, Afterpay alone currently caters to 10 million consumers worldwide, many of which are millennials.

So, why are millennials drawn to these payment plans? One big reason appears to be that the generation is (rightfully) afraid of going into debt. “There is a big fear of getting into debt and a revolving line of debt,” Davis says of the younger generations. In fact, it’s something we’ve seen proven; a 2019 survey from Credible found that American millennials were more scared of credit card debt than dying.

In addition to this fear, Davis says that gen Z and millennial folks are just more financially responsible when it comes to debt. Perhaps influenced by the amount of credit card debt people faced after the 2008 financial crisis, “they aren’t opening credit cards, they aren’t paying for things beyond their means,” she says. “They are looking to things like Afterpay to be able to better budget out their purchases, and to understand where their money is going and have a better flow of funds.”

There’s a bonus for retailers, too. According to Davis, many retailers who partner with Afterpay have seen increases in average order value as well as new customer acquisition, meaning people are spending *more* money on these brands and that brands are gaining more new customers, thanks in part to Afterpay’s own site. “One of the many benefits that we provide is actually sending traffic to our retailers from the consumer base that we already have and the network that we already have,” she says. Current Afterpay customers—happy with the service and their ability to spread out payments without incurring interest—often use the company’s site directory to see what other brands they can shop in a similar way. “So it’s a huge source of new traffic and new referrals to our retail partners.”

In a November 2020 CBC article, Kyle Houseman, the president of Vancouver-based brand Native Shoes, said that while only 5% of the company’s customers used Afterpay at that time, those that did tended to spend more money. “Naturally, when you are going to spend a hundred dollars on an item today and you’ll only have to pay $25, [now] you can buy both the dress and the shoes,” Davis explains of this method. “And so people feel great about their purchase and they’re only spending $50 today.”

What happens if I don’t make a payment on time?

Now, for the big question: What happens if I miss a payment? Well, it depends on which service you’re going with. For service provider Klarna (which is only available outside of Canada and allows users to pay with both credit and debit cards), failing to meet your payment deadlines *could* affect your credit score, depending on which country you’re in, with the company admitting that U.K. accounts that aren’t paid within a few months can be passed along to debt collection agencies. In the United States, debit card users who fail to have sufficient funds available in their bank account—thus preventing Klarna from being able to withdraw the required amount—could incur late fees and the eventual dismissal of their account from the app. Yikes. But with others services, such as Afterpay Canada and PayBright, there’s no interest or additional charges if you miss a payment. “Everything is automatically debited from the user’s card,” Davis says. With 90% of Afterpay’s users using their debit cards, “if a user is late on a payment, they’re actually not allowed to use the platform until their repayment is made.” (The same goes for those who use credit cards as their form of payment.)

Davis says this incentivizes users *to* actually make their payments, by ensuring they have enough funds in their bank account to be withdrawn or enough credit available on their credit cards, because they want to continue using the service. (If you’re wondering what happens to retailers if you miss a payment, Afterpay assumes all responsibility, acting as an intermediary between the retailer and customer, and paying the retailer directly for the product on the assumption they’ll be paid back by the customer. But FYI, Afterpay charges its retailers between 4% to 6% on each purchase, which is a much steeper charge than credit card companies).

It *is* important to note that while Canadians using the service won’t have to contend with late fees, the company’s U.S. counterpart does list late fees in its terms of agreement. Per Chatelaine, American users are given a 10-day grace period, after which Afterpay U.S. can charge up to 25% of the original purchase price in late fees. (FYI, Clearpay is the company’s U.K. counterpart).

What do financial experts think of Afterpay?

Does this mean you should only shop Afterpay? Not so fast. While millennial money expert Jessica Moorhouse understands the convenience factor of services like Afterpay, she’s not entirely sold on the program. “It almost scares me because already as online consumers, we’re so unconscious of our spending,” Moorhouse says of the service. While some people may know exactly what’s in their digital shopping cart, pondering a purchase for days before making the decision to hit “Pay Now,” that’s not the case for many. “A lot of times when we buy things online or in person, we immediately forget how much actually we spent,” she says. And a “buy now, pay later” option may only increase that lack of awareness, prompting people who may not have the necessary funds to buy an item they want without really thinking it through. “If Afterpay didn’t exist, maybe you would take a step back and consider whether you should buy that or not,” Moorhouse says. “Maybe you can’t afford it right now, so maybe you should not buy this right now and wait until you actually have all the funds in your account… but with options like Afterpay, more people will think, ‘Oh, whatever, I’ll just do it.’”

And while paying off your purchase in a six-week time frame may sound great in theory, as Moorhouse points out, *a lot* can happen in that span of time (especially during a pandemic). “Six weeks is such a short window,” she says. “If you don’t have the money to buy whatever item it is now, are you sure you’re going to have the money in six weeks? Most likely not. A lot can happen in six weeks. You can lose your job.” Not to mention the fact that these installment programs put the onus on the consumer to decide whether or not to use credit or debit when purchasing, meaning there’s still the chance that they can rack up extra fees or debt with select payment programs should they be unable to re-pay the amount (for example, Sezzle charges fees if you fail to make a payment or move the payment date more than two times).

For Moorhouse, services like Afterpay feel like a justification to make purchases people know they should delay and save up for in advance. “It doesn’t make any sense to have a payment program set up with Sephora,” she says. (Paybright does, FYI.) “Those [products] aren’t essential. So just take a minute and wait, save up  with a few paycheques and then buy whatever you need to buy.”

What are some tips for saving if I don’t want to use Afterpay?

For those who are still looking to do some damage when it comes to shopping, but aren’t quite ready to try an installment payment plan, Moorhouse has some tips for saving up. “Try your best to practice conscious consumption [and] be more mindful with where your money’s going,” she advises. “Part of that is taking the time to make a budget.” Moorhouse recommends using spreadsheets to help (she has some available on her website, free of charge), outlining how much you’re earning and how much you’re actually spending. “Take a look at your spending for the past three months to see really, where is your money going,” she says. “That may be a good indicator to see ‘do I have a spending problem?’ or to figure out, ‘maybe I should kind of cool it down, because I’m realizing that I’m actually spending almost as much as I’m earning, which isn’t really helping me progress with saving and investing for my future.’”

In addition to this, Moorhouse recommends setting up a special savings account for expenses that aren’t monthly (like clothes shopping and haircuts, to name a few). “Consider it like a savings goal and you nickname your savings account ‘shopping,’ for when you do need to get new outfit or go to Sephora. And then every paycheque, make sure to put a percentage of that paycheque into that savings account.” Depending on your budget and what you earn, you can decide how much you’d like to put into your special fund every month. “And then you let that grow, grow, grow,” she says. This way, next time there *is* a sale at Sephora, you have the money saved up to spend.”There’s nothing wrong with spending, but [it’s important to] be mindful of where your money’s going and save that money up in advance so that you don’t get yourself into debt. So you can feel good about spending that money on yourself.”

All About Vanessa Hudgens’ New Boyfriend, MLB Player Cole Tucker

Vanessa Hudgens is starting 2021 with a new relationship. E! reports that the 32-year-old actress is dating 24-year-old Pittsburgh Pirates baseball player Cole Tucker. “They are boyfriend and girlfriend,” a source told the outlet. “They rang in the New Year together.”

Tucker and Hudgens were first seen together in November, having dinner at Pace in Laurel Canyon, CA. A witness told E! at the time that “they had a romantic dinner outside under the stars. They shared wine and food and had a great two-hour meal. Vanessa was giddy with laughter. She was looking over at Cole and couldn’t contain her smile.”

Hudgens most recently dated actor Austin Butler for eight years. The couple split a year ago, in January 2020. Two sources at the time told E! that being long distance was what ultimately did the duo in.

One source said Butler and Hudgens were “split for now” but are “going to see what happens. They have such a history and deep connection they could find their way back to one another. Right now she felt like he needed to go and be single and see if that’s what he really wants.”

A second source added that “they’re just shooting on two different continents [Butler was working in Australia, and Hudgens had just finished a film project abroad] and it’s a matter of distance. There is no bad blood at all, and they have a lot of respect for each other.”

In November 2020, Hudgens spoke to Entertainment Tonight about what she was looking for in her next partner.

“I feel like at the end of the day, it’s just about having similar fundamentals and wanting the same things,” she said. “Like, I am not picky, really. … Like, I know what I want and I’m like, if someone comes into the picture and can give me all those things, then great, it doesn’t matter if they’re in the public eye or not—if anything I prefer them not to be but we’ll see, we’ll see.”

The Secret to Yahya’s Perfect Skin is Getting Steamy

Now that we’ve put the dreadful year 2020 behind us, it’s becoming easier to find little pockets of joy to brighten up our 2021 days. Mine? Watching our collective boyfriend Yahya Abdul-Mateen II beaming with joy as he discovers the amazing benefits of facial steaming.

Just ten hours ago, the actor posted a carousel of videos and photos of him doing his skincare routine, a moment he revealed was inspired by a phone conversation he had with his uncle. “I was ramblin’ on the phone with my uncle when he cut me off and said, “Aye! Aye! Aye! Aye! Aye! Aye!.. … … RELAAAAAAAAX,” he wrote on Instagram, adding that he’ll be taking this new year “REEEEAL SLOW!!” “Steamin and Beamin!!” is what Yahya dubbed his skincare routine.

If you’ve ever perused Yahya’s Instagram pictures, his joyful smile is sometimes accompanied by a sultry smolder or a shirtless pic (hey, lock screen!), but it’s his sunkissed radiant glow that remains a constant. Safe to assume facial steaming is one way he achieves his perfect skin and his routine consists of just three simple steps:

Step 1: Karaoke to Giveon

While massaging the cleanser onto his forehead, Yahya set the mood by singing along to “Still Your Best” by Giveon before realizing the cleanser accidentally got in his eye.

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

        Step 2: Ponder

How long are you supposed actually steam your face? That question probably haunts Yahya, who admitted he has no idea how long he should be steaming his face but has been at it for about 45 mins, on and off. “I don’t know how many times a day I’m supposed to do this, but I think I’m into this now,” he says as he moves his face around to make sure all areas are being steamed evenly. Yahya, might I suggest ELLE’s guide to facial steaming?

Step 3: Pics or it didn’t happen!

Did you really perform your whole skincare routine if you didn’t document it for your Instagram followers? Luckily, Yahya knows exactly what we like: new lock screen options. After steaming his face, Yahya sealed the deal with a selfie of him smiling seemingly mid-steam.

Of course, Yahya’s comment section was filled with support from fans and friends alike, including fellow actor and beautiful person Michael B Jordan, and groomer to the stars (including Yahya himself) Joanna Simkin. The actor also got in the comments himself, recommending fans to shop for a steamer at Sephora. It seems best to follow his sound advice. Here’s to “steamin’ and beamin” in 2021!

Canadian Startup OVRY Aims to Make Pregnancy Tests More Affordable & Sustainable

Vancouver-native Jackie Rhind got the idea for OVRY, the direct-to-consumer company aiming to make pregnancy and ovulation tests more affordable and sustainable, from personal experience. Rhind has a blood clotting disorder that precludes her from taking hormonal birth control and would often find herself buying pregnancy tests at pharmacies where the markup was high and the tests had large single-use plastic handles. “We deserve a better option,” says Rhind of people who have a need for the tests.

Her lightbulb moment came while using a small test strip to identify ketosis when she was on the keto diet. “I thought, they should have this for pregnancy tests,” says Rhind, who discovered strip pregnancy tests do exist and are often used in doctors offices and hospitals. “I realized there was a need to build a trustworthy brand with really high-quality products in a less wasteful, more convenient format where people can order them discreetly from their home.”

Enter OVRY. Its pregnancy tests are 109 times smaller and use 99 percent less single-use plastic than any midstream test found at the drugstore.  A small box of four OVRY pregnancy tests retails for $18 and a large box of 18 pregnancy test is $36.

Rhind says consumers are vulnerable when it comes to purchasing pregnancy tests. “I’ve been there. You go into the store and look at the cheap version and more expensive versions [of the pregnancy tests available] and just think to yourself, ‘I don’t care if it’s an extra $7, I want to work,’ but you don’t have the information that these tests could all have the same accuracy.”

It’s a common misconception, says Rhind, that the more expensive the test is, the better it is. “Largely, that is not true,” she explains. “Pregnancy tests are highly regulated and must meet high standards of they would not have clearance to be sold.”

Less expensive tests available at some bargain stores may be sold closer to their expiry date. This wouldn’t necessarily make them less effective, but you wouldn’t be able to keep the test on hand as long as others. (OVRY tests, which are manufactured in Canada and approved by Health Canada, have a 24-month shelf life from their manufacturing date, which is clearly marked on the packaging.)

        pregnancy and ovulation tests
OVRY Combo boxes of pregnancy and ovulation tests, available from $17 at myovry.ca.

Unlike midstream pregnancy tests, strip pregnancy tests need to be submerged into urine. When used properly, they have the same accuracy as midstream tests, says Rhind: “Our pregnancy tests are 99.7 percent accurate and ovulation tests are 99.2 percent accurate.” OVRY test strips are also ultra-sensitive, which means they are able to detect the pregnancy hormone HCG at a lower threshold, thus detecting pregnancy earlier than test that do not offer this.

Since launching in late 2020, the range of people using OVRY has been wide, says Rhind. The biggest consumer has been people trying to conceive, naturally or through IVF, who are going through high quantities of tests. “Athletes who experience irregular cycles are another group we’ve heard from,” says Rhind. “They don’t know if they are pregnant or just training really hard.”

OVRY’s inclusivity has been by design. “We want to ensure we’re not excluding people that don’t usually get spoken to, but that our products are absolutely eligible for,” she says. “When you normalize non-gendered language, it sets the bar and encourages other businesses to follow suit.”

Who Is RegĂ©-Jean Page, Bridgerton’s Sexy Duke?

dunhill dylan jones pre bafta dinner party

        David M. BenettGetty Images

If you love a period drama that features longing glances, subtle flirtations, and someone’s mother fussing about marriage eligibility, then Bridgerton is absolutely for you. If you’re also so excited by the sound of Julie Andrews’ voice that, like me and Leslie Knope, you get “too hyper before bedtime,” then Bridgerton is for you. If you like shows with very sexy people playing other very sexy people, then Bridgerton is for you.

This show is full of attractive people, but there is one person in particular who’s really having a moment right now: Regé-Jean Page, who plays Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, and love interest of London’s most eligible, Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor).

The two have a roller coaster of a relationship. We could get into a deeper analysis (and trust me, I will in a future article). To summarize, Simon and Daphne needed to go to therapy from pretty much the moment they meet. But this is a period drama, and people don’t talk about their problems. Instead, they go to dozens of useless, frivolous balls and focus on filling their dance cards. And we love it.

Simon’s issues aside, Page is definitely an actor to know. He’s the star of Bridgerton, and it’s clear he’s going to have leading-man potential for years to come. Here’s what you need to know about him.

He started acting in childhood so he could buy himself a Gameboy.

Page, who grew up in Zimbabwe and the U.K., told InStyle that he was a “musical, loud, bouncing-around-the-house” kid who started acting so he could afford a Gameboy. In an interview with Netflix’s Queue & A, he said he also wanted to be an explorer when he was young.

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

“That was my first idea of what would be a really great thing to do in the world: to discover unknown things and pick around in them and see what you could bring back home to go, ‘Look! The world is bigger than you thought it was,’ he said. “Then I discovered that would involve facing entirely too many very large spiders.”

You’ve definitely seen him in other film and TV projects.

Just last year, he appeared in Sylvie’s Love, a movie about a summer romance between an aspiring TV producer (Tessa Thompson) and a saxophonist (Nnamdi Asomugha), Page plays drummer Chico Sweetney. You might also know him from Shonda Rhimes’s legal drama For the People and the 2016 Roots remake. In the Queue & A interview, Page also said he played the Little Drummer Boy in a school production.

“I was the Little Drummer Boy in my school’s nativity play, and oh, how I played! Such drums, such playing! I clearly had a career in musical theater ahead of me and somewhere took a left turn and started getting all dour and serious and doing emotionally broken dukes.”

        He’s got musical talent.

Page and his brother, Tose, have a musical duo called TUNYA. And you can hear Page’s vocal talents in the short film Don’t Wait, directed by Lanre Malaolu.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Here’s the description on the website: “Conceived in the midst of the long, hard summer of 2020, Lanre’s visceral choreography meets Regé-Jean’s swooning love song, and re-mixes it into an explosively physical, intensely personal journey—an intimate missive straight from the broken hearts of young Black men—battling through desolation, rage, confusion, and ultimately bruising vulnerability.”

It’s important for him to work on projects that show Black people being happy.

“It’s a relief to make the very easy decision to stop excluding people from our stories,” Page told ELLE.com in December 2020. “It’s not commonly done, but also, there’s no good reason for it not to be done.”

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

He also told InStyle that he’s all about taking part in projects that show Black joy, especially in historical fiction, which usually only features white people thriving.

“What happens in culture often is, you go back in time and only white folks are happy,” he says. “And you know what? We’ve all known how to smile since the beginning of time. We’ve all gotten married since the beginning of time. We’ve all had romance, glamour, and splendor. Representing that is incredibly important, because period drama for people who aren’t white shouldn’t mean only spotlighting trauma.”

He adds: “If we’ve endured white Jesus for this long, then folks can endure a Black duke.”

The 7 Winter Skincare Products ELLE’s Beauty Director Swears By

To simplify your quest for the ultimate winter skincare regimen, Beauty Director Chloe Hall explains her essentials for combating the season’s effects on your complexion. With picks from Ulta Beauty and guidance from New York City-based dermatologist Dr. Jeannette Graf, Hall’s got you this season.

Step 1: Double Cleanse with a Balm and Water-Based Face Wash

Hall says she’s a “makeup girl,” meaning she loves wearing the stuff even though she isn’t leaving her house often. Because of this, a double-cleanse is a must. The first wash involves an oil-based cleanser (to pick up any makeup, dirt, and debris), while the second one involves a water-based cleanser to wash everything away.

For this part of her routine, she uses the Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm. It’s perfect for any winter skin routine because the hydrating oils in the formula combat dryness. She follows the balm with the CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser, a no-frills face wash with moisture-retaining hyaluronic acid and ceramides (lipids that can ultimately help moisturize skin).

        Facial Spray

        Mario Badescu
        ulta.com

        $7.00

Step 2: Tone with a Hydrating Mist

Hall loves using the Mario Badescu Facial Spray—a toner that she discovered through social media. Not only does she adore the scent of its aloe and rosewater blend, but she also likes how hydrated it makes her skin feel. Graf says a toner with ingredients like chamomile, cucumber, lavender, and rosewater (all found in Hall’s pick) can help moisturize and soothe skin.

“Ingredients that moisturize and soothe include chamomile, cucumber, lavender, and rosewater.”—Jeanette Graf, MD

Step 3: Layer Moisturizing Serums and Creams

Hall says layering moisture is important to ensuring skin stays hydrated during the winter. She starts with The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, a serum that the brand says can help replenish moisture. After applying a few drops, her skin is left looking dewy and plump.

Next, she applies a rich moisturizer. During the day she uses the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream, a formula that she says is ideal for her combination skin. The rich blend of colloidal oatmeal, shea butter, and ceramides hydrates without increasing oiliness. At night, she uses the Cerave PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion, which has ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid.

Step 4: Don’t Forget the Eye Cream

        Confidence In An Eye Cream

        It Cosmetics
        ulta.com

        $39.00

Like many of us, Hall also has dark circles. Since undereyes have the thinnest and most delicate skin on the face, hydrating that area becomes even more important to Hall during winter. For Hall, she calls on the It Cosmetics Confidence In An Eye Cream, which she calls a “miracle worker” for treating pigmentation in the area. She’s not the only one using it, however. “My boyfriend has more of a wrinkle and crow’s feet issue, but I always catch him stealing this wonder product,” she says.

Emma Stone Is Pregnant With Her and Dave McCary’s First Child

Emma Stone is about to become a mom. Us Weekly reported this evening that the actress is pregnant with her and her husband Dave McCary’s first child. It comes as photos of Stone out with a friend surfaced.

“She seems very happy and very excited about becoming a mother—she’s constantly oohing and cooing. She looks great, she looks healthy, she’s glowing,” a source told the outlet. “She’s been keeping up with friends and work lately, she’s always staying active and gets her daily exercise in.” The outlet did not specify when Stone is due.

Stone and McCary first started dating in October 2017; they got engaged in December 2019. A source confirmed to People in September 2020 that the two had quietly wed. That news came after the pair initially sparked marriage rumors in May when they were seen wearing gold bands.

Stone spoke to Jennifer Lawrence for ELLE in August 2018 about her desire to have a family in her 30s. “I’m at peace,” she said, of hitting the milestone age. “I think it’s been a good time to get a little perspective, because things were so heavy work wise for the past few years. And honestly, so many of my dreams are now personal and less professional.”

She added, “My perspective about kids has changed as I’ve gotten older. I never babysat or anything. As a teenager, I was like, I’m never getting married, I’m never having kids. And then I got older and I was like, I really want to get married, I really want to have kids.”

I’ll Be Drinking This Copycat Starbucks Medicine Ball Recipe All Winter Long

        tmp_QPE6L7_328eacf02e29bf23_4.jpg

I love a good Starbucks run. Hot or iced, there’s always some drink I’m craving, and Starbucks gets it right every time. One of my favorite items to order on a cold winter day is the Medicine Ball, also known on the Starbucks menu as the Honey Citrus Mint Tea. It’s a hot, soothing blend of tea, honey, and lemonade that never fails to warm me up. And, as the name would suggest, it’s the perfect cup to cozy up with when you’re feeling under the weather.

So when I found this copycat Medicine Ball recipe from TikTok user @chambo_mommy, I knew I had to try it. It requires just five ingredients: water, peach tea, citrus mint tea, lemonade, and honey.

        tmp_8a3CI2_b9c041414254725b_1.jpg

In just five minutes, I whipped up a comforting drink worthy of any travel mug. If you’re looking to switch up your morning routine or soothe your cold symptoms — and save some money in the process — then this sweet, citrusy tea is just the thing!

        tmp_WgTsdE_66555d6d12b8173c_2.jpg

        Notes

This recipe is for one trenta-sized drink, or two smaller, grande-sized servings. You can double the number of tea bags for a stronger brew, and also adjust the amounts of honey and lemonade to taste.

        Copycat Starbucks Medicine Ball Recipe

        Ingredients

        1. 2 cups water
1 Teavana Peach Tranquility tea bag
1 Teavana Jade Citrus Mint tea bag
          2 cups lemonade
          2 tablespoons honey
1 slice of lemon, to garnish (optional)

        Directions

        1. Heat the water to boiling and add both tea bags. Steep while preparing the other ingredients.
        2. Add the honey to the bottom of your cup.
        3. Warm the lemonade over low heat until it begins to steam, then remove it from the stove and pour it into your cup.
        4. Remove the tea bags and add the tea to the other ingredients. Stir.
        5. Garnish with a slice of lemon, if desired, and serve hot.

Beyoncé Shares Rare Family Photos of Her Three Kids

        Photo: Beyonce.com

Blue Ivy, Rumi and Sir have gotten so big!

In a new photo dump on her eponymous website, Beyoncé has shared never-before-seen images of her three kids, Blue Ivy Carter, who turns 9 years old on January 7, and twins, Rumi and Sir Carter, 3.

Titled “B at 38,” the photos look back over Bey’s 38th year, which included: a romantic dinner on the beach for two (not pictured: Jay Z), playing in the sand with her kids and a birthday cake covered in icing bees.

The photos follow a video compilation released on New Year’s Eve, which you can view here, that included 2020 highlights we already knew about, like her multi-year Peloton partnership and releasing Black is King on Disney+.

“Cheers to a New Year Beehive!! 2020 divided us and united us. Most could not see loved ones and we felt too many loses, but we were united by our humanity,” Knowles-Carter captioned the video. “This year for me has been about celebrating joy, chasing happiness, and living in love.”

“As we all look forward and pray for new beginnings, my wish for you is that you honor yourself and those you love. Celebrate that you are an important individual who contributes to our beautiful collective. Here’s to a better and brighter 2021! Love, B.”

Bey opened up about her having her daughter, Blue, earlier this year in a cover story for British Vogue, saying “Something cracked open inside of me right after giving birth to my first daughter. From that point on, I truly understood my power, and motherhood has been my biggest inspiration. It became my mission to make sure she lived in a world where she feels truly seen and valued.”

See the new, very adorable family photos of Blue Ivy, Rumi and Sir Carter below.

FLARE Faves: Our Top Buys From December

Back when the FLARE team shared an IRL office space (RIP to my abandoned aloe plant…), my mornings looked a little something like this: rush to get up the elevators in time for our 8:30 a.m. daily meeting (for which, I admittedly showed up to at approx. 8:32 most days), hit the button on my Nespresso machine, roll my chair over to our meeting table and start discussing the trending news items of past 24 hours with my brilliant colleagues. We’d assign a new story or two, check in on the status of our scheduled posts for the day and then invariably our attention would turn to what new outfit, eyeliner or gadget one of us was debuting.

Since WFH became our new reality, there’s been less opportunity to share sale scores and new obsessions. For one, most of us put a hard stop on unnecessary shopping; and furthermore, we found ourselves wearing sweatsuits much of the week. But now that we’re settling into our “new normal” (and we’re opening up our wallets again) we decided to take our conversation online—like everything else right now—and a new series was born. In FLARE Faves, we’re sharing our top fashion, beauty and home buys from the past month.

Here, the best things we bought or were gifted in December.

        Elham’s picks

        Best snow boots

editors favourite products: best snow boots

Palmroth Ankle Boot with Front Zipper, $130 (regular $348), brownsshoes.com

It’s been a pretty mild winter so far but I’m always cold no matter what the temperature is (and according to my doctor I’m not anemic, so what gives?). My old fall boots just don’t cut it for me anymore, but luckily I snagged these warmer boots on mega sale. This Palmroth pair has the softest wool inner lining that keeps my forever-frigid toes happy, and they’re super comfortable too. Plus, the silhouette is lovely with the soft exterior suede and thick tread on the sole, overall making for my perfect winter shoe.

        Best lip balm

editors favourite products: Jack Black lip balm

Jack Black Moisture Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 in Black Tea, $11 sephora.com

I’ve tried so many different lip balms in my life, and I thought I figured out the perfect lip moisturizing routine that works for me (applying lip balm before bed, after showering, and each time I head outside), but my newest concern has been balms that are too minty and burn my eyes when I wear my mask. So I’ve recently switched back to this old faithful and haven’t had any issues since. Definitely one of my holy grail products.

        Best diffuser blend

editors favourite products: Saje diffuser blend

        Saje Liquid Sunshine, $18 saje.com

One of the things that’s helped me immensely in dealing with the negative aspects of quarantine is trying to “re-learn” my space at home. It’s not a lot of space to begin with, so introducing New Things isn’t necessarily the best option for keeping it uncluttered. But adding sensory elements like this citrus-y diffuser blend helps me bring moments of peace in some otherwise semi-chaotic days, and sometimes a simple uplifting moment like that is all I need. —Elham Numan, graphic designer

        Katherine’s picks

        Best lounge set

editors favourite products: Dynamite lounge set

Dynamite Luca Puff Sleeve V-Neck Sweater, $45, and Sauve Wide Leg Pant $60, in Stone Blue, dynamiteclothing.com

This is honestly one of my favourite finds of 2020, and the best and easiest WFH ‘fit ever. The sweater is just stylish enough to look like you’ve made an effort for your work Zoom calls, but also *so* comfortable. I’ve worn this to work from home in, to run to the grocery store in and for a virtual holiday party—it really is just super versatile! Plus, anyone can rock it. My mom just placed an order for a matching set of her own!

        Best mascara

        editors favourite products: Glossier mascara

        Glossier Lash Slick, $20, glossier.com

A tried and true favourite for many people, I’m a new convert to the Glossier mascara family, and am truly obsessed with their Lash Slick. As someone who unfortunately has a penchant for lumping my eyelashes together (taking a cue from the spider eyelashes found on ladies from The Bachelor), the lash slick is a saviour, easily separating my eyelashes while giving me tons of length. I honestly can’t believe these are my IRL eyelashes!

        Best wireless headphones

        editors favourite products: Apple headphones

        Apple AirPods Max, $779, apple.com

I’m always an Apple product skeptic. As in, I can’t believe that a product is actually *as* good and life-changing as people hype them up to be. And every time I doubt them, I’m proven wrong. So it goes with the brand’s latest launch, the Apple AirPods Max. These are definitely a luxury purchase (I was gifted this pair), but if you’re in the market for a great set of headphones (for work, gaming or personal use), and have a bit of extra cash to spend, you need a pair of these. They’re surprisingly light weight, have amazing sound quality (seriously, listen to Bon Iver’s “Hey Ma!,” you won’t regret it), and cute as heck. My pair is pink, and when I tell you I feel like the chicest DJ while bopping around to the new Taylor Swift album in my room…I’m not lying. —Katherine Singh, assistant editor

        Jenn’s picks

        Best throwback sweatshirt

editors favourite products: Club Monaco sweatshirt

Club Monaco Crest Sweatshirt, $129.50, clubmonaco.ca

My loungewear collection has never been more robust (I basically could have created an advent calendar with a new pair of leggings or sweats for every day in December) and I don’t intend to stop wearing my cozies anytime soon. That said, in 2021 I’m planning on reserving my ~fanciest~ athleisure for work from home days and only reaching for my truly ratty retired workout leggings for weekend cleaning sprees. This crisp Club Monaco logo sweatshirt, part of the brand’s beloved limited-edition collection of retro-feeling styles featuring the Club Monaco crest, is ideal for a day of editing and Zoom calls. Come for the varsity vibes, stay for the soft, lived-in feeling cotton.

        Best overnight skin treatment

        editors favourite products: Skinceuticals overnight

SkinCeuticals Glycolic Brightening Renew Overnight, $110, skinceuticals.ca

Don’t you just love when you can really see results from your skincare?! I can always count on science-backed brands like SkinCeuticals to get the job done. This glycolic and phytic acid night treatment promotes skin’s cellular turnover leaving your mug positively gleaming, and with an improved texture and more even tone, after regular use. The texture is lovely, too; more substantial than a day cream but not quite as thick as most overnight face creams and with just a hint of bounce. After using it nightly for about two weeks, I began detecting noticeably smoother, glowier skin in the morning.

        Best steamer

        editors favourite products: Rowenta steamer

        Rowenta X-Cel Steam Pocket, $80, thebay.com

In my version of hell, I’ll be forced to battle an old, squeaky ironing board and piping hot clothing iron until the end of time. (Is there a more sinister appliance than a red hot iron, just taunting you to trip on its menacing cord?!) This handheld gadget makes the traditional de-wrinkling duo seem positively archaic, while relegating bulky full-size steamers, the likes of which you might find backstage at a fashion show or in the dressing room of a boutique, look like actual torture devices. (Do not ask me how many times I burned myself on the evil steam while smoothing clothes at my university retail job, I absolutely lost count.) This cutie is lightweight and super compact, with its collapsible head making it even easier to stow—or pack, when we can travel safely. It uses very little water so you don’t have to refill it every time you want to steam a garment, and it heats up in 15 seconds. The efficiency! Timely bonus: hot steam sanitizes as it combats wrinkles, attacking bacteria, mites, odours, pollen and other allergens. —Jennifer Berry, managing editor

        Charlotte’s picks

        Best everyday earrings

editors favourite products: Jenny Bird earrings

Jenny Bird Toni Chubby Hinge Hoop Earrings in Gold, $110, nordstrom.ca

It took several months, but I think I’ve finally figured out the staples in my pandemic wardrobe, and key among them are a pair of earrings that are bold enough to actually show up on a Zoom call, but not so heavy, dangly or otherwise cumbersome that I have to take them off for a lunchtime workout. These chubby gold-plated hoops from Canadian jeweller Jenny Bird are exactly that—the kind of goes-with-everything accessory that is still unique enough to garner a compliment or two every time I wear them (which nowadays is pretty much daily!). They’re statement-making enough on their own, but on days when I’m feeling fancy I’ll pop them in my second holes and layer them up with other gold earrings, and maybe even throw on a gold necklace if I’m going *all out*.

        Best hot brush

editors favourite products: Revlon Hot Brush

Revlon Salon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer, $70, canadiantire.ca

Blame it on TikTok: I could not resist trying the hot tool that has taken over my social media feeds for the past several months. After an IRL friend bought this hair dryer brush and confirmed it is as good as its hype, I was sold. At $70 it beats many of the pricer hair gadgets I’ve tested over the past year, both in terms of its ease of use (it’s all one piece—no interchangeable brush heads or charging nests to fumble with) and getting the job done; that is, smoothing my colour-damaged waves into a shiny actually healthy-looking lob. I’ve been using this on its own and as a first step before creating bends with a curling iron, and it’s noticeably shaved minutes off my morning routine. She’s a keeper!

        Best calendar

editors favourite products: New Day calendar

        New Day Calendar, $40, newdayproject.ca

It’s been a while since I purchased an actual wall calendar. Honestly, the last time may have been from the Scholastic book fair in grade school (best day ever, am I right??) and it came with a matching bookmark and door hanger. This calendar—a collaboration from Toronto-based photographers (and former FLARE collaborators!) Saty + Pratha and floral designer Coyote Flowers—is decidedly more sophisticated, not to mention chic as hell. In fact, I’d categorize it as wall ART, especially since the monthly prints can be saved and framed after their time marking your important dates. But the best part of this project is that the artists are donating every dollar from sales to Red Door, a shelter and crisis centre in Toronto that is working to break the cycle of family homelessness. Wins all around. —Charlotte Herrold, editor-in-chief
