Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss’s Complete Friendship Timeline

Taylor Swift has long documented the peaks and valleys of her relationships in precise pop detail. Whether it’s recalling a relationship lost in “All Too Well” or lamenting love found in “Lover,” Swift is nothing if not forthcoming. This fact makes her rumored rift with former best friend Karlie Kloss all the more intriguing. Once the closest of pals (a joint Vogue cover!), the two are seemingly now estranged.

With the release of two new bonus tracks off her latest album evermore, Swift has inspired speculation once more about who the songs could be referencing. In the case of “it’s time to go,” signs point to Kloss. Here, a history of Karlie and Taylor: The Way They Were.

January 2012

The Kaylor friendship began with Swift’s 2012 Vogue cover interview. During the discussion in Prabal Gurung’s studio, she spotted a photo of Kloss and exclaimed, “I love Karlie Kloss. I want to bake cookies with her!”

Kloss read the piece and tweeted, “Hey @taylorswift13 love the @voguemagazine cover! Your kitchen or mine? :)”

November 2013

While the two presumably became friends privately over cookies and wine, Swift and Kloss wouldn’t publicly be spotted until 2013. Swift performed in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show where Kloss walked the runway. The two had a moment alongside each other as Swift sang “I Knew You Were Trouble.”

A few months later, Swift and Kloss opted for a bestie road trip. Kloss documented it on her Instagram. “karlie ❤️’s @taylorswift,” Kloss captioned a photo of her tracing that very same message into a sandy beach. “another epic pit stop…Do you see the size of that elephant seal?!” Kloss wrote alongside a snap of the two hugging during their travels.

July 2014

Kloss and Swift’s summer in the city showed no signs of stopping. They ran errands in Soho and grabbed lunch at Sarabeth’s in Tribeca. These were simpler times and ones the world watched with fascination.

Months later, Swift and Kloss enjoyed a friendship milestone that few ever reach: appearing on the cover of Vogue together. Amidst stories told about their friendship, Swift said, “People had been telling us for years we needed to meet. I remember makeup artists and hair people going, ‘Doesn’t she remind you of Karlie? God, she and Karlie would be best friends. They’re the same.'”

Kloss appeared in Swift’s celeb-filled music video for “Bad Blood,” an ode to her now-infamous squad. Other cameos came from pals include Selena Gomez, Zendaya, Lena Dunham, and Cara Delevingne. The song was considered to be about Swift’s feud with Katy Perry.

Kloss dropped by a London tour date of Swift’s 1989 tour. She attended the show with a group of other Swift squad members including Hadid, Delevingne, Serena Williams, and Kendall Jenner (who is definitely not close to Swift now).

August 2016

In August, mere weeks after Swift’s feud with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West reared its snake-like head, Kloss was asked about the conflict. Sunday Times Style magazine directly asked Kloss if she thought Kardashian “was a good person.” Kloss replied, “Ha… you know… I honestly… I… I…” Kloss stuttered initially, with a smile. Then she said, “I think she’s been a lovely person to me in the past. Look, I really don’t know her that well.”

Kloss later tweeted her statement on the subject publicly. “I will not allow the media to misconstrue my words,” the model wrote. “Taylor has always had my back and I will always have hers.”

December 2016

Happiest of Birthdays to my ride or die @taylorswift ❤️🎂👯❤️ I feel blessed to count you as my friend, sister and partner in crime. Can’t wait to celebrate together very soon ❤️🍪🍾” Kloss wrote in a sweet post for Swift’s 27th birthday. December 2017

A year later, Kloss posted for Swift’s birthday, notably with far less to say about the day. “Happy happy birthday @taylorswift! 💫” she wrote simply.

January 2018

After months of speculation over Kloss and Swift’s friendship (including the model’s lack of public support for Swift’s new single “Look What You Made Me Do”), fans detected shade. On Instagram, Kloss captioned a video of her playing basketball for Love magazine, “Swish swish 🏀❤️ Love Advent ’17 thank you @thelovemagazine @kegrand @philpoynter.” Fans noticed Kloss’s reference to Perry’s rumored Swift diss track, “Swish, Swish.” Soon after, Kloss changed the caption to read, “Nothing but net 🏀❤️ Love.”

February 2018

Rumors of a rift further circulated when People reported Kloss and Perry had grabbed dinner in Los Angeles with Vanity Fair writer Derek Blasberg and jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer.

The possible friendship breakup was even weighing heavily on Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence. During a TimesTalks Q&A for her spy movie Red Sparrow, she said that if she was a spy in real life, she’d “like to know what’s going on with Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift, that’s the honest to God truth.” She jokingly added that “what happened” between them is “keeping me up at night.”

March 2018

The New York Times ran a profile of Kloss in which it lists Swift as one of her “closest friends.” The piece also concludes that “despite internet gossip suggesting otherwise, the pair continues to be good friends and they talk frequently.” The model warned, “Don’t believe everything you read.”

August 2018

Kloss momentarily put rumors to rest by attending the Nashville stop of Swift’s Reputation tour. No one puts on a show like @taylorswift 🎤✨ #ReputationTour Nashville was out of this world, I am SO proud of you 🖤” she captioned a selfie of the two.

October 2018

During a 73 Questions segment with Vogue, the interviewer asked Kloss about the friendship, saying, “I just have to get this out of the way, because the world deserves to know: is everything cool with you and Taylor?”

Kloss laughed, “The world needs to know? Well, Jennifer Lawrence was interested. Jen, don’t worry, Taylor and I are still really good friends.”

March 2019

After months spent apart, Andy Cohen asked Kloss her thoughts on Swift’s “30 Things I Learned Before Turning 30” essay for ELLE during Watch What Happens Live. In the essay, Swift wrote about learning the difference between lifelong friendships and situationships and leaving some friendships behind.

“Taylor is incredible, and I feel really lucky to call her a friend, and she’s one of the hardest working women, and I loved her essay,” Kloss responded.

August 2019

While most had assumed that Swift and Kloss were not the partners in crime they once were, two recent developments spelled the end. Swift did not attend either of Kloss’s weddings to Joshua Kushner. The first was an 80-person ceremony in October 2018, which conflicted with Swift’s Reputation tour in Australia. June 2019 brought the second ceremony, attended by Swift enemies past and present, Katy Perry and Scooter Braun. Swift was invited to both, but Kloss’s rep said she was “unable to attend due to prior commitments.”

Perhaps the final blow to the best friendship between Kloss and Swift came when the model was seen on Instagram with her manager, Scooter Braun. Braun recently acquired all of the rights to Swift’s first six albums, much to the singer’s public dismay. Swift has said that she will re-record all of the music Braun owns. And while Kloss has repeatedly asserted that she and Swift are still close, Swift has been silent about their relationship and most of her other friendships.

July 2020

With the surprise release of Swift’s eighth album folklore on July 23, fans found any reason to tie Kloss’s social media activity to the music. After Swift teased her album with a woodsy photo on Instagram, Kloss shared two photos of herself in nature, captioned, “happy place 😌.” Some interpreted this as a sly nod to folklore‘s aesthetic.

That same day, Klossy posted about her coding program, Kode With Klossy. In one of the videos, the code reads, “Easter egg,” which some Swifties took as reference to the singer’s own reliance on covert clues.

While those theories may have been a stretch, Kloss supported folklore on the ‘gram in other ways. E! reported that Kloss liked photos of model Martha Hunt wearing a cardigan from Swift captioned with “peter losing wendy,” a lyric from the song “cardigan.” She also double-tapped Project Runway co-star Christian Siriano’s Swift-inspired artwork. “Well #taylorswift inspired a paint session last night after a very hard day in fashion,” he wrote alongside snaps of his painting. “So her wonderstruck gown painting is now available on ChristianSiriano.com! Oh and my custom Siriano little sofa is fitting in just perfectly!”

January 2021

Another Swift album release meant more speculation about her friendship with Kloss. After debuting two bonus tracks from her ninth album, evermore, rumors swirled about the inspiration behind both. In the song, “it’s time to go,” Swift sings, “When the words of a sister, come back in whispers, that prove she was not, in fact, what she seemed/Not a twin from your dreams, she’s a crook who was caught.” That line seems to reference a falling out with a friend and many have assumed it’s Kloss.

Kloss has referred to Swift as being like her “sister” in the past, and numerous articles have called the two out for twinning. One very public example was her 2016 birthday tribute to Swift: Happiest of Birthdays to my ride or die @taylorswift ❤️🎂👯❤️ I feel blessed to count you as my friend, sister and partner in crime. Can’t wait to celebrate together very soon ❤️🍪🍾” Buzzfeed broke down in detail why the lyrics seem to just add fodder to feud rumors.

The other new track, “right where you left me,” could have a Kloss callout. “Friends break up, friends get married,” is the lyric that opens the song, a possible reference to Swift not attending either of Kloss’s 2019 wedding ceremonies to Joshua Kushner.

Alas, Swift hasn’t commented on exactly who influenced either new song. Instead, she tweeted, “The first (“right where you left me”) is a song about a girl who stayed forever in the exact spot where her heart was broken, completely frozen in time. “it’s time to go” is about listening to your gut when it tells you to leave. How you always know before you know, you know?”

Loewe Taps Into Your Inner Child With ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ Collaboration

The celebrated film My Neighbor Totoro can serve as a much-needed distraction right now, especially during a week of an otherwise dreadful news cycle. The uplifting storyline follows two young sisters who escape the grim reality of their hospitalized mother by exploring a new home and a lush countryside. Along the way, they meet magical spirits and befriend the likes of Totoro, a giant cuddly bunny. It’s warmhearted escapism at its purest, weaving in adventure without plot, sadness with joy. It feels oddly significant during troubling times like these.

Now, Loewe is joining forces with the movie’s director Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli for a collection that will bring a much-needed smile to your face. Featuring imagery from the 1988 animated cult classic, the playful partnership speaks directly to your inner child and film buff (who happens to love fine designer goods).

“The connection between LOEWE and Studio Ghibli is this mutual love of craft and artisanal techniques, expressed in our respective languages.” creative director Jonathan Anderson stated in the brand’s press release. While Anderson has worked with stores like Paula’s Ibiza and several artists, this marks one of Loewe’s most high-profile collaborations.

The childlike sensibilities of the movie lend themselves naturally to Anderson’s whimsical aesthetic. Two icons meet in the form of the Loewe’s Puzzle bag, featuring Totoro splashed along the side (Totoro also happens to be Studio Ghibli’s mascot). Dust bunnies are revealed in the form of fluffy pompoms that hang from a leather moto jacket and trim a pair of shorts. Intarsia landscapes and scenery from the movie are printed on tote bags and sweatshirts with the Loewe logo superimposed on top.

“The message is one of dreamy serenity and hands-on creativity—of being at one with nature and with one’s own inner child—which is especially important right now and, I think, always will be.”

The collection drops today online at Loewe.com and select stores nationwide.

5 Things I Learned While Watching the Headspace Guide to Meditation on Netflix

When you think of meditation, you might picture people sitting cross-legged on the floor, breathing deeply with their eyes closed and their minds empty. While some meditation is practiced this way, the Headspace app has made it a mission to demystify this ancient practice and make it accessible to everyone. Now, the Netflix series Headspace Guide to Meditation, hosted by Andy Puddicombe, encourages viewers to incorporate meditation into their daily lives by explaining the technique’s benefits and including a practice meditation at the end of each episode.

I watched all eight episodes of the series to see if meditation might be right for me. If you’re wondering whether or not to give it a try, here are five things Headspace taught me about meditation that helped me see it differently.

1. Meditation Is Not Just Sitting Quietly on the Floor

Some meditation looks like this, but meditation can also be practiced with your eyes open or while lying down. Headspace defines meditation as a skill for training your mind that creates a greater sense of calm. You can meditate by yourself or with other people, and it’s not about controlling your mind or changing it in any way. Instead, it’s about focusing your energy, attention, and thoughts in a relaxing but present way.

2. There’s More Than One Kind of Meditation

“Meditation” is actually a collection of mindfulness techniques that can help you cope with or find solutions for different problems in your life. The Headspace guide introduces viewers to eight different styles of meditation, one per episode. You might like all eight and continue to use them regularly, or find that only one or two really work for you. Meditation is meant to be personal, so it’s all about finding what helps you breathe easier.

3. There Is Actual Science Behind Meditation

In each episode, Puddicombe introduces another way that meditation can improve your life that’s backed up by a scientific study. Throughout the series, he explains that meditation has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, aggression, negative thoughts about body image, and more. Meditation is also thought to increase neuroplasticity, or the flexibility and structure of your brain. It helps people feel calm and makes space for gratitude, kindness, and compassion.

4. Meditation Isn’t All Self-Reflection

Some parts of meditation do encourage people to look within themselves and examine their own thoughts and feelings. But Puddicombe also takes viewers through meditations that encourage you to imagine how other people you know would think and feel in certain situations. This helps build compassion and empathy for others, even people you don’t get along with. The mind tends to be very critical of itself and others. Reducing this judgmental mindset can make you feel happier and help you channel your anger and resentment into something healthier.

5. Practice Makes Perfect

Meditation isn’t something you only do once or twice. To experience any of the above benefits in your own life, you have to commit to meditating regularly. It’s a skill, and that means it needs to be strengthened just like any other skill. So if meditation doesn’t come easily to you at first or you don’t feel like it’s doing anything for you, just keep going. The more time and energy you spend practicing it, the better you’ll feel.

I have meditated a few times before, and I never thought it was very helpful. But after watching Headspace’s guide, I am now more convinced of the practice’s benefits. I’m always looking for more self-care tools to add to my arsenal, and meditation might just be the missing strategy I’ve been looking for. If you’re skeptical, I recommend watching the first 20-minute episode and trying the meditation exercise at the end. Go into it with an open mind — you might just be surprised at what you can accomplish!

The Best New Workout Clothes For 2021

Image via net-a-porter.com.

Yes, exercise is good for your health, creates endorphins that make you feel chipper, etc. etc. etc. But for some of us (myself included), exercising also presents the enticing opportunity to source and wear an additional category of cute clothing. Scrolling through e-comm sites and filling virtual cars with leggings and sports bras I may, or may not, purchase is fun. I find it relaxing. And when I eventually decide on the perfect piece to click purchase on, I feel primed to workout. I tend to be more motivated to get sweaty when I like what I’m wearing – and that feeling isn’t unique to me.

A 2012 study published in Journal of Experimental Social Psychology found that clothing can influence behaviour because it carries symbolic meaning. “When you put on new fitness gear, you begin to get into character like an actor putting on a costume for a performance,” sports psychologist Dr. Jonathan Fader told Shape. “As a result, you expect to have a better performance, making you more mentally prepared for the task.”

If you’re in the market for new workout gear, there is a slew of new leggings, sports bras and accessories hitting the virtual shelves this month. Nordstrom Canada has launched a microsite dedicated to its wellness offerings, which includes gear from Patagonia, Girlfriend Collective (like its highly rated sports bra) and Canada’s Arc’teryx. Joe Fresh debuted its Project Self campaign, dedicated to prioritizing yourself and celebrating the little wellness wins, alongside a vibrant new spring collection (watch Sasha Exeter model it for outfit inspo).

American digital-only retailer Pretty Little Thing has entered the Canadian market, which means Karrueche Tran’s 62-piece collection of neutral-toned workout and workout-adjacent clothing is now available to ship to Canada. For pre-and-post workout chill, there’s JW Anderson’s fashion-minded take on athleisure available exclusively at Net-a-Porter.

We’d be remiss not to mention Canadian brands Lululemon, whose wildly popular Align legging (the softest ones I’ve ever worn) are now available up to size 20, and Michi, who recently released a velvet workout set that makes moving your body during the winter months seem much more appealing.

Jason Sudeikis Is Reportedly ‘Heartbroken’ Over Ex Olivia Wilde’s Romance With Harry Styles

On Monday, news broke that Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles were dating, nearly one year after she and her ex-fiancé Jason Sudeikis privately split. News of Wilde and Sudeikis’ breakup wasn’t reported until November, and now, People has some intel on how Sudeikis feels about Wilde’s new relationship. He isn’t okay at all because he still wanted to reconcile with Wilde, the mother of his two children Otis, 6, and Daisy, 4 and the woman he dated for nine years.

A source told the outlet that Sudeikis “is absolutely heartbroken about the split. There is still a lot of love there, and he would like to have hope that maybe there’s a way for them to repair things. But what happens next remains to be seen.”

On Tuesday, a source addressed the possibility of Sudeikis being blindsided by Wilde’s new relationship to Entertainment Tonight. Since the two had actually split in the beginning of 2020, “it’s not like she’s rushing into something,” the source said. “Olivia and Jason talk all the time and are still close because of the kids. It’s highly unlikely he was blind-sided by this news.”

When Wilde and Sudeikis’ breakup was first reported in November, People was told by a source that their relationship has “been amicable, and they’ve transitioned into a great co-parenting routine. The children are the priority and the heart of the family’s relationship.”

Entertainment Tonight was told at the end of November that Sudeikis and Wilde splitting was “mutual,” by a source close to Wilde. “They just fell out of love in a romantic way, but still have love towards one another as people,” the source said. “They consider themselves friends and co-parents first and foremost. They are committed to co-parenting successfully for the sake of Otis and Daisy and have done a great job so far at staying connected in a healthy way for their relationship and for their children.”

A second source added that “there was absolutely no drama or scandal, they just didn’t work as a couple anymore. If you’re looking for a juicy story, there just isn’t one.”

“They adore each other and have nothing but the utmost respect for one another,” that source continued. “They will continue to be each other’s biggest supporters, especially when it comes to parenting their children and their careers. They see each other all the time still.”

Your Favorite Twitter Comedian Probably Has Parade Underwear

style points

Style Points is a weekly column about how fashion intersects with the wider world.

As Congress debated the COVID relief package, a joke ricocheted around Twitter to the effect that our stimulus checks had been bargained down to a pair of Parade underwear. By that point, the ubiquity of the brand, especially on the platform, had become an in-joke in itself. Its colorful wares were a currency of their own, a kind of e-girl Bitcoin. At the very least, the probability that a pair or two might show up in a microinfluencer’s mailbox felt higher than the likelihood of the government getting us paid in a timely manner.

While the lingerie campaigns of yesteryear were about models who exuded untouchable perfection (even the ’90’s Calvin Klein ads were a parade of scuzzy-chic seraphim) for several years now, the market has been about relatability over retouching. Despite their varying aesthetics, Aerie, Savage x Fenty, and ThirdLove have all staked their claim to this unfiltered approach: size inclusivity, diverse casting, and a focus on dressing for oneself rather than for a generic male gaze. Parade, which was founded by Cami Téllez and Jack DeFuria in 2019, is among the growing number of brands in this field. Karlie Kloss and Shakira are investors, and Parade raised its profile last month by collaborating with Juicy Couture, a name that its Gen Z target audience probably perceives as retro, complete with a campaign that cheekily evoked tabloid images from the aughts.

parade juicy couture collaboration

An image from the Juicy Couture collaboration campaign.

Courtesy of Parade.

For that audience, the lo-fi aesthetic is what sells now. Explains Zoe Cohen, Parade’s head of brand marketing, “People want to see the behind-the-scenes just as much as the finished product.” In fact, Cohen says that they’ve noticed that casual phone snapshots or even blurry videos “almost always get higher engagement on our Instagram feed than our campaign images.” And as at-home loungewear trendlets have risen during the pandemic (tie-dye sweatsuits, fashion UGGs) underwear (especially the fun, colorful, selfie-friendly kind) has reigned supreme.

parade underwear

Looks from Parade’s astrology collection.

Courtesy of Parade.

As for why everyone on Twitter suddenly seems to have it? Cohen admits that “our influencer approach is more inclusive and less curated than many other brands,” and that Parade gifts “widely.” Often, the targets are nano-influencers, people with few followers compared to the big names on the platform. (After all, regular people are the hot new thing in fashion.) “We’ve been really focused on getting our product into the hands of many,” Cohen says, though she claims the people they gift are not contractually obligated to post about the brand. It’s just that, more often than not, they do, leading to Parade becoming a veritable form of Internet clout (albeit much easier to get your hands on than a blue check.) While the practice has raised some questions about micro-influencer compensation, according to a recent New York Times piece, it’s also induced the kind of envy that nets publicity. Parade-related FOMO has become a wry refrain among those who haven’t yet gotten it, like comedian Ziwe Fumidoh:

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

And while Instagram rules supreme as fashion’s agora, Twitter, which rewards mordant quips over Face Tuned selfies, has been surprisingly successful for Parade. That seems to have been an intentional strategy. “Parade focuses on self-expression and Twitter is a platform where a particular kind of creator really thrives,” Cohen says. It also, of course, feels like less-tilled ground. We’ve come to expect some level of shilling from Instagram mega-influencers. But your favorite alt comedian on Twitter posting an unfiltered selfie might, in this kind of seen-it-all environment, be a more convincing sales pitch, precisely because you don’t expect that person to be selling you something. As Cohen puts it, “it’s not just for ‘Instagram girls.’”

Adriene Mishler Has a 30-Day Yoga Challenge For the New Year — We Suggest Starting ASAP

As a yoga teacher, Adriene Mishler knows how to make the practice accessible to all levels, and Breath, her 30-day challenge (or journey, rather) that started in 2021, is no exception. It launched on Jan. 1 with an orientation of sorts, and each episode since has built on the foundations of connecting with the breath and moving with intention. Plus, they feature her beloved dog and yogi partner in Savasana, Benji.

A daily practice can be one of the strongest guiding forces that lead us toward healing and growth on our journey. It can serve as a real tangible pathway toward optimal physical, mental, and emotional health. A road back to our true self, it can serve as a way to release anxiety and feel confident in our bodies,” Mishler posted on Instagram. She continued on to say that, along with breath awareness, “this series is designed to help you build muscle tone, improve spinal alignment, and optimize body function.”

Day one’s yoga flow, seen above, is titled “Invite,” and though it was over 45 minutes of slow movement, it still brought the heat to my core and lower body with some plank poses and lunges. You’ll do relaxing moments of Child’s Pose and Savasana, and Mishler will even walk you though a delightful palm massage that I know I thoroughly enjoyed.

I’m someone who practices yoga intermittently and wants to do so more regularly, and this episode was a wonderful way to ease into the new year after a tumultuous start. Mishler wants you to go ahead and embrace “embarking on a journey for yourself where, on day one, the entire premise is an invitation.” And I invite you, too.

For more episodes of this series, check out the Yoga With Adriene YouTube channel. There’s no need to worry if you haven’t started — you can begin from the first episode and do one video per day accordingly. No rush, just flow!

Make These Five Iconic David Bowie Looks Your 2021 Style Inspo

Photography courtesy of Dave Hogan/Getty Images.

Welcome glam details, eclectic suiting and unexpected accessories into your wardrobe this year.

As an image chameleon and culture fiend, David Bowie took inspiration from the musical stars of his adolescence – like Little Richard – as well as the art world, literature, drag, mime and theatre, and his sartorial collaborators from around the world; and he mixed all these influences into one inimitable sartorial catalogue. On what would’ve been the late idol’s 74th birthday, we’re looking back at the indelible mark these David Bowie looks left on the world of fashion and beauty.

1. Wham, bam, thank you glam

Working with the Japanese designer Kansai Yamamoto, Bowie defined what became known as “glam”, a style movement characterized by decadent textures, exaggerated silhouettes, sparkle, colour and traditionally “feminine” details like ruffles and body-con knitwear. Bowie’s wife, the supermodel Iman, memorialized the ground-breaking partnership between her husband and Yamamoto when the designer passed away last Summer.

Tip: Vintage stores are a fabulous resource for the flamboyant fare glam gave us. Have a socially-distanced scroll through some of your fave spots’ Instas for finds while your bold new hair dye sets in.

2. Relaxed ‘fit

Captured here by the legendary photographer Mick Rock (whose images continue to bring many memorable musicians’ enduring looks to life), Bowie’s more casual attire was deeply influential to fashion creatives like Gucci’s Alessandro Michele. And why not? The pairing of wide-leg trousers with prim buckled shoes is a stroke of sartorial genius.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to play with proportion and vibe in your outfits! Demure with daring is always a cute coupling.

3. Suiting up

Few people could rock a suit quite like Bowie, whether it was in the style of a dapper 1940s film star or something a little more louche. This ensemble, from the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert in 1992, shows off his eclectic approach to dressing through the combo of a surprising pastel hue, trim tailoring, contrast shirting and an artful tie.

Tip: Suiting doesn’t have to be severe – look for pieces in unexpected colours and wear with patterned accents to give it your own twist.

4. History lesson

david bowie looks
Photography courtesy of Dave Hogan/Getty Images.

On several occasions, Bowie wore bespoke pieces crafted by the legendary designer Alexander McQueen (like this frock coat – an item name-checked in his hit song, “Queen Bitch” – which Bowie wore to perform at the Glastonbury Festival in 2000). Reminiscent of the fanciful fare sported in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, the piece is updated through its styling with a contemporary kind of shirting.

Tip: If you find some sumptuous fabric in a thrift shop (or have material at home that you don’t know what to do with), why not take it to a local tailor – historical references in hand – to give it a second life? Wear with modern pieces to avoid looking like a period movie character.

5. Wow factor

david bowie looks

One could argue that Bowie’s mere presence gave enough oomph factor to every setting he stepped into, but his ability to add star power to even the simplest of lewks – like a rugged jumpsuit – was truly out of this world.

Tip: If you think your outfit needs a gold jacket, it definitely does.

Kylie Jenner Quietly Unfollowed Almost All Her Friends on Instagram, Including Sofia Richie

Kylie Jenner gave her Instagram following list a major trim this week, E! is reporting, with the makeup mogul unfollowing almost all of her friends, including Sofia Richie, her former assistant-turned-friend Victoria Villarroel, and her go-to platonic date Fai Khadra. Jenner now only follows 28 accounts, and nearly a third of them are fan accounts about her.

The rest seem to be family (all the Kardashian and Jenner siblings), although her ex-boyfriend Travis Scott and best friend Stassie Karanikolaou remain on the list. Why did Jenner mass unfollow essentially all but one of her close friends? E! didn’t speak to a source about Jenner’s intentions, but the outlet noted that because Jenner unfollowed people like Khadra who very much remain close family friends, there doesn’t appear to be any drama attached to her following list cleanup. She just wanted a cleaner feed.

That said, Jenner and Richie do have more distance these days, following Richie’s split from Scott Disick, Jenner’s sister Kourtney Kardashian’s ex-boyfriend and the father of her three children.

Us Weekly reported in August that Jenner purposely didn’t attend Richie’s birthday trip to Cabo San Lucas because she wanted to avoid causing any awkwardness with her family. (Yes, the fact that Los Angeles had been under a safer at home order for months at that point, urging residents to avoid non-essential travel because of the coronavirus pandemic, was apparently not Jenner’s biggest motivation to skip the festivities abroad. In fact, Jenner drew criticism that August for ignoring the non-essential travel ban and taking a trip to Turks and Caicos that August for her own birthday.)

A source explained the two’s relationship to the outlet, stating, “Sofia and Kylie are still friends, but Kylie decided to stay back and not go on Sofia’s birthday trip to avoid any awkwardness. Kourtney isn’t upset by Kylie and Sofia’s friendship and wouldn’t tell Kylie what to do, but the Kardashians are extremely loyal to each other and Kylie felt she was better off staying behind.”

The source added that Disick actually would have “been bothered more than Kourtney if Kylie were to have gone.”

How to Remove Stubborn Quarantine Stains At Home

We might not be experiencing the pain of a yellow mustard spill at a Mets game or boozy date nights involving Cabernet, but quarantine stains hit differently. Our first world problems seem magnified in lockdown. Something as small as spilled coffee on your favorite sweats to kitchen mishaps from a TikTok recipe can reveal just how close we are to a mental breakdown.

To help calm you down, we spoke to industry-loved experts to tackle your scariest stains: Gwen Whiting and Lindsey Boyd, the co-founders of The Laundress (a collection of eco-friendly detergents and fabric care specifically designed to be gentle on your favorite designer delicates), and Zachary Pozniak, VP of Operations at the renowned, high-end, luxury dry cleaning company, Jeeves New York. Pozniak is also the face behind the addictive Tiktok account, @cleanfreakz, which lays out 60-second tips on how to remove stains from a Celine bag to a Prada puffer jacket.

We asked them for a few general dos and don’ts on tackling at-home removal, plus detailed step-by-step instructions on how to reverse makeup, grease, and food stains below.

DO read the garment label

Here’s a general rule of thumb: if the item says dry clean only, then dry clean only. Pozniak does not recommend trying to lift stains on these items yourself, so trust the professionals to do the dirty work for you. If it can be washed at home, then proceed with caution and care.

DON’T panic when you get a stain.

elle 0420

Cole Sprouse

The moment a stain hits your favorite designer garment, it happens so fast you swear it went down in slow-motion straight out of a laundry commercial. The key is not to panic. “The most common mistake we see people do is using paper napkins, club soda, or whatever’s around to attempt to remove the stain, which, for the most part, only makes it worse,” says Boyd. “It’s better to wait and treat it at home, where you can use the proper products and tools and have time to treat the affected area. Any frantic attempts can end up making a bigger mess, leaving you with traces of paper lint on the item and an even larger stain.”

DO dab (not wipe)

dab cloth

Getty Images

“Avoid using paper towels, napkins, or tissue” says Whiting. The Laundress created the Lint-Free Cleaning Cloth as an easy “go-to” cloth for removing stains. Instead of spreading the stain in by rubbing, use a dabbing motion pulling up, which lifts the stain. For your tool, choose a cloth that is free of lint.

DON’T dry or iron an item if a stain is still apparent.

elle 0320

Matthew Kristall

Before you do anything, make sure you don’t add any heat to the material. The heat from a dryer or iron can lock the stain into fabrics, making it difficult to remove later on.

DO have these three household items handy:

“The best pretreatment stain remover is not one from the grocery store or a pharmacy but one you can make at home,” says Pozniak. “Fill a spray bottle with water, a teaspoon of dish soap (I really like Dawn), and a quarter cup of white vinegar and shake and apply as needed. Three percent hydrogen peroxide can be purchased in your local drug store and it is usually in the First Aid aisle, a bottle is inexpensive, and it works like magic.”

who knew salad dressing could handle your stinky yoga gear? Vinegar is a strong and powerful tool in removing tough odors, according to both pros. “Vinegar acts as a magnet for odors,” says Whiting. “Pretreat odorous fabrics before washing by soaking in a capful or two of Scented Vinegar and warm or cool water for 30 minutes.”

    DO soak.

    elle 0620

    Terrence Connors

Boyd says soaking the garment is an important step after tackling a stain with treatment. All fabrics benefit from soaking, the process helps the solution penetrate better into the fabric. Use hot waterhen treating everyday items like cotton, durable synthetics, denim, and cool water for delicate materials like woolens, silks, and synthetics.

How to Remove: Food and Beverage

    elle 0419

    Miles Aldrige

Food and beverage spills are typically tannin stains, which are color-rich and originally derived from plants—aka anything delicious: coffee, tea, juice, fruit, tomato sauce, chocolate ice cream, red wine, etc. If there are chunks visible, carefully remove the top excess with a lint-free towel but do not rub the stain. Pozniak says to approach wine and food as follows:

    1. Rinse the stain with cold water.
    2. Before washing, mix up his aforementioned go-to solution of water, dish detergent, and white vinegar.
    3. Apply this solution to the stain site and allow to sit for fifteen minutes.
    4. Wash as normal or instructed by the Care Label
    5. If the red wine/food stain did not come out, do not dry!
    6. Repeat the above procedure, but if that doesn’t work, apply 3% hydrogen peroxide. Allow to sit for 30 minutes and then wash. This should remove the last traces.

How to Remove: Makeup and Grease

      makeup

      Getty Images

A red lip can make a powerful statement, but we prefer it on AOC rather than your white turtleneck. The Laundress considers lipstick, self-tanner and most makeup a combination stain, meaning it contains both oil and color-rich pigment. Grease stains can be approached in the same way.

Boyd says to lather The Laundress’ Wash & Stain Bar under cool or warm water, then work it directly into the affected area until you see the stain breaking up. Next, apply a drop of Stain Solution on top and massage it in with a toothbrush.

Soak the item for 30 minutes afterward, to allow for the stain solutions to really penetrate into the fabric. Use cool water for delicates as we mentioned, and warm to hot water for everyday fabrics.

Pro tip: For durable fabrics like cotton, “a good trick is to place the item in a basin, sink, or tub, then pour almost-boiling water from a height directly onto the stain,” explains Boyd. “This will really work the treatment into the item.” The force and pressure from the height will assist in penetrating the stain and will do the work for you.

      How to Remove: Sweat

      sweat

      Getty Images

What’s more classic than a clean white tee to complete a laid-back look? It’s effortless and chic, until you lift up your arms to reveal embarrassing yellow sweat stains. Pozniak says armpit stains, yellowed stains, or simply, oxidized stains are difficult and sometimes impossible to remove. “During the cold, dark winter months, those sweat stains which were invisible slowly start to oxidize. Oxidation is a process in which a chemical substance changes because of the addition of oxygen,” Pozniak explains. “On a practical level, stains that dry clear often times contain a component of sugar will turn yellow or brown over a few months’ time.”

      1. If the sweat stain is on a washable garment, try and get out as much as you can with cold water first. This will prevent it from setting deeper into the fabric.
      2. Mix up a solution of one cup of lukewarm water, 1/2 teaspoon of dish detergent (not laundry detergent, we like Dawn), 1 tablespoon of ammonia, and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar.
      3. Apply this solution to the sweat stain site and allow to sit for 15 minutes.
      4. Wash on the hottest water setting to ensure the lifting of the entire stain.
      5. Repeat if needed to ensure that the entire stain is gone before drying. Like we said, if you dry before the sweat stain has been completely removed, the stain will set

        How to Remove: Blood

        hedi slimane dior homme s2002

        Alamy

It’s fascinating how a tiny spot of blood has the potential to turn into what looks like a massacre on your clothes but it’s happened to all of us, whether it’s a cringe-worthy kitchen accident or it’s that time of the month. For any injuries, consult a doctor, but for bloodstains, you can potentially fix the stain yourself with hydrogen peroxide if you act fast. “Hydrogen peroxide will cause fresh bloodstains to foam, this is to be expected, don’t run away!” says Pozniak. “Fresh blood stains are easier to remove than old bloodstains, so try to take care of this as soon as you can.” Follow his steps below to no longer see red.

        1. Apply 3% hydrogen peroxide directly to the stained area. Allow the hydrogen peroxide to sit on the stain for 5 minutes. Do not rub the stained area.
        2. Rinse the stain with cold water.
        3. Wash as normal or instructed per the Care Label
        4. After the wash cycle has ended, check to see if the bloodstains have been removed. If the stain is gone, then dry the items as you usually would. If the blood remains, do not put the item in the dryer.
        5. Try the procedure above again.

The Hottest New Celeb Partnership Trend Is Sex Toys

It would surprise exactly no one to hear of most new celebrity-brand partnerships. A-listers team up with beauty brands (like Zoe Kravitz and YSL Beauty), fashion brands (like Jennifer Lopez and Coach), and far too many fragrance brands to mention here all. the. time. The latest celeb partnership trend, however, made us pause: a handful of celebrities have recently announced that they’ve teamed up with sexual wellness brands. Our thoughts? If pairing a celebrity name with sex toys is what it takes for people to feel more comfortable discussing and exploring their sexual health and wellness, we’re here for it. Read on for what Lily Allen, Cara Delevingne and Dakota Johnson have to say about the sex toys and sexual wellness brands they’re backing.

          Lilly Allen and Womanizer

          Lily Allen
Womanizer Liberty by Lily Allen ($119), at womanizer.com

British singer Lily Allen has been a vocal supporter of the Womanizer long before she became an ambassador for the brand in late 2020. “If I had to pick one vibrator above all others, it would be the Womanizer,” Allen wrote in her 2018 autobiography My Thoughts Exactly. “It can make you come in twenty seconds, or if you keep it going up there, it will reward you with ten orgasms in a row.” Now, Allen has her own hot-pink limited-edition version of the  clitoral stimulator out now.

          Cara Delevingne and Lora DiCarlo

          Lora DiCarlo Osé 2
          Lora DiCarlo Osé 2 ($395), at loradicarlo.com.

Model and actor Cara Delevingne is co-founder and creative advisor for sex tech startup Lora DiCarlo. Delevingne told Fast Company that working in the space was something she had “been thinking about for a very long time” and wanted to find the right brand to partner with. “I grew up pretty repressed and English in terms of sexuality,” she added. “That relationship that you have with yourself is the most important one in the world. And this is not just to do with pleasuring yourself, but it’s about exploration and loving yourself.”

          Dakota Johnson and Maude

          Maude vibrator
Maude Vibe Personal Massager ($56), at chapters.indigo.ca.

Admittedly, partnering with a sexual wellness company is not off brand at all for this Fifty Shades movie star. The 31-year-old actress is an investor in Maude, which bills itself as a modern sexual wellness company. Its non-intimidating, architectural looking vibrators is a favourite of Johnsons. “I love a good vibe, for obvious reasons,” she told Vogue. “But the pH-balanced Wash is wonderful. I am really soothed by the idea that a product I use on my body is helping my body be the best version of itself.” Canadians can shop Maude from Indigo.

The Cast of Bridgerton Is Already Dropping Hints About Season 2. Here’s Everything We Know.

I made a delightful discovery this week: There might be no better way to close the door on 2020 than by stuffing your face with Christmas cookies and bingeing eight straight episodes of a period drama by Shonda Rhimes. The steamy, lavish Regency-set Bridgerton—Rhimes’s first new scripted series as part of her massive deal with Netflix—is not my typical Netflix fodder; I usually find period pieces tired and overstretched.

But Bridgerton moves along with the captivating clip of one of those fancy horses the leading ladies ride side-saddle. The story of Daphne Bridgerton’s scheme to avoid a loveless marriage with the doltish Lord Berbrooke—by stirring up a fake romance with the Duke of Hastings—might seem shallow on the surface, but Bridgerton does a delightful job of manifesting real intimacy between the two leads. The result is a fun bit of escapism that still manages to feel significant and special.

So, the question on everyone’s lips, of course, is if there’s more. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting on official news from Lady Whistledown, but there are a few things we know so far.

          Season 2 seems likely.

Although Netflix has yet to announce an official return for Bridgerton, we have two reasons to suspect it’ll happen anyway: 1) The series has been a huge hit since its debut on December 25, and 2) Reports from production schedules seem to imply season 2 is already slated for 2021. In particular, a recent listing from Production Weekly shows the season is set to start filming in Uxbridge, England, in March 2021. We’ll see if that pans out with the coronavirus pandemic, but it’s a promising sign for future episodes!

          LIAM DANIEL/NETFLIX

          The cast wants to return.

Although excitement from the cast doesn’t necessarily mean a show will return, it certainly doesn’t hurt. Phoebe Dynevor, who plays Daphne, told ELLE.com she would love to come back to the show, so long as she gets to have a little fun with Jonathan Bailey’s character, Anthony. “I want to see Daphne get involved in Anthony’s love life a bit, as he sort of meddled with hers quite a lot,” she joked. “I think that will be fun.”

regÉ jean page as simon basset and phoebe dynevor as daphne bridgerton in episode 108 of bridgerton

          LIAM DANIEL/NETFLIX

On the other hand, Regé-Jean Page, who plays Daphne’s suave beau Simon Basset, would like to see more of their relationship in the next series. “As far as continuing to explore characters, I think that love is an evolving thing,” he told TV Guide. “It’s a living, breathing thing that needs tending, that needs looking after, that needs mending when it gets worn or torn. They get married very young. They still have a lot of growing to do. They have a lot to do, and I think it’ll always be fun to watch them do that together.”

Finally, Nicola Coughlan, who plays the darling Penelope Featherington, told Radio Times she, too, would come back for more—especially if Penelope gets more screen time. “I’d love to go on that journey with [Penelope], to see how she’s changed,” she said. “I’d really love to come back, because I feel like we’ve just scratched the surface. And because there’s such a huge cast in this show, there’s so much more of all the characters.”

We have a good idea of what season 2 would be about.

Speaking of a large cast of characters, the Bridgerton book series on which the show is based has eight different books, which means the wizards over at Netflix have no shortage of material to work with. If the series continues to draw from Julia Quinn’s creations, next season should focus not on Daphne and Simon but on Daphne’s brother Anthony and his own quest for love—or, uh, something like it.

You see, Anthony is convinced he should marry for duty, not love, and so he refuses to marry someone he actually cares for. In the book, titled The Viscount Who Loved Me, he chooses a Sheffield daughter as his wife, but Kate Sheffield steps in to protect her younger sister from a marriage to London’s most famous bachelor. Then Kate realizes her own heart might be at stake. Sounds delicious.

Urs Fischer Distorts The Iconic Louis Vuitton Monogram

With each new year comes an aura of possibility and reinvention. That spirit is at the very heart of the new Louis Vuitton x Urs Fischer collection, which fittingly launched on New Year’s Day. The capsule’s launch marries the Swiss contemporary artist’s vision with Louis Vuitton’s iconic monogram logo for an entirely new look.

Fischer is one of the only designers who has been permitted to alter the Maison’s pattern since its debut. His signature creative flourishes can be seen in leather accessories, ready-to-wear apparel, shoes, and seven special-edition bags—a Keepall, Cabas, Onthego, two Neverfulls, Speedys, Pochettes Accessoires, and a hard-sided beauty case. The collection is available in two color combinations, black and red or black and white. It features hand-sketched versions of the Louis Vuitton initials and flowers, which Fischer calls “memory sketches.”

          MAEGAN GINDI

When asked about his approach to the capsule collection, Fischer spoke about his mind-bending inspiration. “It’s like asking different people to draw a map of the world from memory, then observing the different ways people interpret it,” he told ELLE.com in a statement. “This idea of distortion through memory is fascinating to me and I felt it was a good way to create a new layer of mythology around the Louis Vuitton Monogram.”

          MAEGAN GINDI

This is Fischer’s second collaboration with the fashion house, following 2019’s Artycapucines bag, a limited-edition art-piece where he designed hyper-realistic, hand-painted silicone pieces of fruit and vegetables to hang from the brand’s iconic Capucines satchel. For his latest Louis Vuitton output, Fischer is assisting with inventive window displays, store installations, and campaign imagery, even a a high-concept, as well as a partially animated film, which you can watch here.

The Louis Vuitton x Urs Fischer 2021 collection is available in stores and online now.

This Is the Moment Dr. Fauci Knew COVID-19 Was Going to “Be Transformative” For the World

Most of us have only recently gotten to know Anthony Fauci, MD, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) and the nation’s foremost expert on COVID-19. But Dr. Fauci’s expertise on infectious diseases dates back to the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, a health crisis that, he explained in an interview premiering tomorrow on The Carlos Watson Show, motivated him to become an infectious disease doctor.

“Deep down, I knew we were dealing with a very new disease that was very likely sexually-transmitted,” Dr. Fauci said of AIDS, recalling the first US outbreaks among gay men. At the time, he had been studying different kinds of diseases but was not focused on infectious diseases primarily or the unknown illness working its way across the world. “I decided I was going to stop what I was doing and devote my entire attention to pursuing this new disease,” he said, embarking on a new career path.

Was there a similar alarm bell moment for Dr. Fauci when it came to COVID-19? Yes, he told Watson. He remembered getting a call from CDC director Robert Redfield, MD, at the end of 2019 notifying him of a “strange” strain of pneumonia spreading in China. It reminded him of the SARS virus, a coronavirus that spread inefficiently enough that public health measures quickly put an end to its outbreak in the early 2000s. “Is this another coronavirus that we’re dealing with?” Dr. Fauci wondered. His team had already been researching new types of vaccines, and immediately began to develop one for this novel virus. “Somewhere around February,” he recalled, “it became clear that this was not a disease that was inefficiently spread. It was spread very efficiently . . . at that point I knew, wow. We’re in for something that’s going to really be transformative.”

Watch the clip above and see Dr. Fauci’s full interview tomorrow on The Carlos Watson Show.

Donté Colley in 4ye + More Canadian Fashion Moments We Loved This Week

Here’s who served up some #shoplocal winter wardrobe inspo.

Just because the holidays are over, doesn’t mean the momentum of #shoplocal should end. From Lydia Okello in L’Intervalle to Donté Colley in 4ye, here are a few friendly faces we saw sporting Canadian brands on social this week while making the case for cozy chic.

          Donté Colley in 4ye

Internet boyfriend and positivity advocate Donté Colley took us on an intimate night walk through Toronto recently, and he observed a few of the city’s landmarks while wearing an eye-catching slogan scarf from Brampton-based streetwear brand, 4ye. The accessory’s message – “4ye for the community” – is especially potent given our current COVID situation and the loneliness and distance we’re all experiencing.

          Lydia Okello in L’Intervalle

Putting the “win” in winter lewk, writer and model Lydia Okello paired bold boots from Montreal footwear label L’Intervalle with a decidedly downtime outfit of leggings, a thick-knit sweater, puffer and vibrant toque. And we couldn’t agree more with their post’s closing line: “Also, reminding myself that a fat bod in casual clothes is just as ~off duty chic~ as a thin supermodel wearing the same thing.”

Mosha Lundström Halbert in Jenny Bird & Therma Kōta

Mosha Lundström Halbert – fashion editor and co-founder of the outerwear brand, Therma Kōta – not only gave us major ice queen energy wearing a style from her label’s collection. She was also wearing chunky chain necklaces from Toronto-based accessory line Jenny Bird, proving that more is indeed more when it comes to Canadian design.

Michelle Obama Speaks Out Against Rioters and Trump: ‘Now Is the Time for Swift and Serious Consequences’

Former First Lady Michelle Obama released a statement this afternoon forcefully condemning President Donald Trump and the actions of the pro-Trump mob yesterday that stormed the U.S. Capitol. Obama candidly recounted her horror at the mob’s actions and disparity in policing between yesterday and the Black Lives Matter movement this summer.

“For those who call others unpatriotic for simply taking a knee in silent protest, for those who wonder why we need to be reminded that Black Lives Matter at all, yesterday made it painfully clear that certain Americans are, in fact, allowed to denigrate the flag and symbols of our nation,” she wrote. “They’ve just got to look the right way.”

Obama went on to call for action to be taken: “All I know is that now is a time for true patriotism,” she started. “Now is the time for those who voted for this president to see the reality of what they’ve supported—and publicly and forcefully rebuke him and the actions of that mob. Now is the time for Silicon Valley companies to stop enabling this monstrous behavior—and go even further than they have already by permanently banning this man from their platforms and putting in place policies to prevent their technology from being used by the nation’s leaders to fuel insurrection. And if we have any hope of improving this nation, now is the time for swift and serious consequences for the failure of leadership that led to yesterday’s shame.”

I woke up yesterday elated by the news of Reverend Raphael Warnock’s election victory. He’ll be Georgia’s first Black senator, and I was heartened by the idea that the Senior Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church—the home parish of Dr. King and a spiritual and organizational hub during the Civil Rights Movement—would be representing his state in the United States Senate.

In just a few hours, though, my heart had fallen harder and faster than I can remember. Like all of you, I watched as a gang—organized, violent, and mad they’d lost an election—laid siege to the United States Capitol. They set up gallows. They proudly waved the traitorous flag of the Confederacy through the halls. They desecrated the center of American government. And once authorities finally gained control of the situation, these rioters and gang members were led out of the building not in handcuffs, but free to carry on with their days. The day was a fulfillment of the wishes of an infantile and unpatriotic president who can’t handle the truth of his own failures. And the wreckage lays at the feet of a party and media apparatus that gleefully cheered him on, knowing full well the possibility of consequences like these.

It all left me with so many questions—questions about the future, questions about security, extremism, propaganda, and more. But there’s one question I just can’t shake: What if these rioters had looked like the folks who go to Ebenezer Baptist Church every Sunday? What would have been different?

I think we all know the answer. This summer’s Black Lives Matter protests were an overwhelmingly peaceful movement—our nation’s largest demonstrations ever, bringing together people of every race and class and encouraging millions to re-examine their own assumptions and behavior. And yet, in city after city, day after day, we saw peaceful protestors met with brute force. We saw cracked skulls and mass arrests, law enforcement pepper spraying its way through a peaceful demonstration for a presidential photo op.

And for those who call others unpatriotic for simply taking a knee in silent protest, for those who wonder why we need to be reminded that Black Lives Matter at all, yesterday made it painfully clear that certain Americans are, in fact, allowed to denigrate the flag and symbols of our nation. They’ve just got to look the right way.

What do all those folks have to say now?

Seeing the gulf between the responses to yesterday’s riot and this summer’s peaceful protests and the larger movement for racial justice is so painful. It hurts. And I cannot think about moving on or turning the page until we reckon with the reality of what we saw yesterday. True progress will be possible only once we acknowledge that this disconnect exists and take steps to repair it. And that also means coming to grips with the reality that millions voted for a man so obviously willing to burn our democracy down for his own ego.

I hurt for our country. And I wish I had all the solutions to make things better. I wish I had the confidence that people who know better will act like it for more than a news cycle or two. All I know is that now is a time for true patriotism. Now is the time for those who voted for this president to see the reality of what they’ve supported—and publicly and forcefully rebuke him and the actions of that mob. Now is the time for Silicon Valley companies to stop enabling this monstrous behavior—and go even further than they have already by permanently banning this man from their platforms and putting in place policies to prevent their technology from being used by the nation’s leaders to fuel insurrection.

And if we have any hope of improving this nation, now is the time for swift and serious consequences for the failure of leadership that led to yesterday’s shame.

Thankfully, even in the darkness, there are glimmers of hope. It’s something I imagine Reverend Warnock has preached about before—and I’m still heartened beyond belief that he’s headed to Washington. I’m glad his fellow Georgian, Jon Ossoff, is too, and that together they’ll help give control of Congress back to the only party that’s shown that it can put our democracy above its own short-term political fortunes. I pray that every American, especially those who disagree with them, will give our new Congress, President-Elect Biden, and Vice-President-Elect Harris the chance to lead us in a better direction.

But make no mistake: The work of putting America back together, of truly repairing what is broken, isn’t the work of any individual politician or political party. It’s up to each of us to do our part. To reach out. To listen. And to hold tight to the truth and values that have always led this country forward. It will be an uncomfortable, sometimes painful process. But if we enter into it with an honest and unwavering love of our country, then maybe we can finally start to heal.

We Compared 12 Gap Leggings So You Can See Beyond Their Looks

Anyone else living in leggings? Even if workouts are only happening, say, once a week, there’s just something about the form-fitting pants that make them a sweet around-the-house or around-town option, too. But, not only is it hard to judge between what seems like millions of black pairs, it’s also important to consider what amount of activity you’ll be doing before selecting the perfect one, no matter the color.

In the interest of saving you time and money (as there’s a big Gap sale happening now), we’ve looked through all their leggings to see which we’d recommend for different exercises. These 12 stood out: some are super soft — like organic-cotton soft — while others have maximum compression for high-energy activities. Check them out ahead, and see which fits your fitness plan and personal style as well.

The Best New Beauty Products Launching in January

          Jonathan Van Ness

Including a serum Jonathan Van Ness says made him feel gorgeous and an oil Gwyneth Paltrow calls “maybe the best product ever.”

Happy new year! While we can’t promise 2021 will be any better on a societal level, we can help improve the year from a beauty perspective (huge, I know), starting with a selection of the best new products out this month. From a dark-spot erasing serum to a slew of lipsticks at all price points, here are the best new skincare, hair care and makeup products launching in January.

As global self care ambassador for Biossance, Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness got early access to this dark spot correcting serum, featuring 10 percent vitamin C and white shiitake mushroom extract. (The brand says this formulation is both stable and non-irritating.) After using it for a month, here’s what he had to say: “I’ve always had freckles .. [and I do like my freckles to show through] but they did kind of join together in my 30s to create pockets of melasma that weren’t there before.. and honey, it is breaking up! My skin is feeling bright, I am feeling gorgeous.” We’re sold.

          Atelier Cologne Lemon Island
Atelier Cologne Lemon Island Cologne Absolue Pure Perfume ($185 for 100 mL), at sephora.com

I can’t speak highly enough about Atelier Cologne, founded by genius nose Sylvie Ganter and her husband, Christophe Cervasel. Atelier Cologne scents are citrus-y and fresh with serious staying power, yet never overwhelm a wearer (or the room they walk into). Like nearly all of its fragrances, 92 percent of the ingredients in its latest launch, Lemon Island, are from natural origin. This one includes fair trade lemons from Rodrigues Island (a small volcanic island in the Indian Ocean, east of Mauritius), jasmine from India and a vanilla infusion from Madagascar. Parfait, non?

GOOPGENES All-in-One Super Nutrient Face Oil

GOOPGENES All-in-One Super Nutrient Face Oil ($135), at sephora.com.

In a video for the launch of Goop’s new daily face oil, Gwyneth Paltrow calls it “maybe the best product ever.” At the very least, she says, it’s her “favourite [product] ever, of all time.” She then goes on to say the Bakuchiol-containing oil (Bakuchiol is often referred to as a plant-derived retinol alternative) is like “heaven on earth” and that “you won’t believe the difference it makes in your skin.” And then she drops the bottle on her bathroom floor. The video cuts away before we know whether or not it smashes into a million pieces, but we’re sure GP can get another!

Selena Gomez Calls Out Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Instagram for Enabling Pro-Trump Mob

selena gomez at the cannes film festival

          Pascal Le SegretainGetty Images

Selena Gomez forcefully called out the heads of the country’s biggest social media platforms—Facebook, Twitter, Google, Instagram, and YouTube—for enabling the pro-Trump mob that stormed the Capitol yesterday by not stopping the spread of disinformation on their platforms.

“Today is the result of allowing people with hate in their hearts to use platforms that should be used to bring people together and allow people to build community,” she wrote on Instagram and Twitter. “Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google, Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg, Jack Dorsey, Sundar Pichai, Susan Wojcicki—you have all failed the American people today, and I hope you’re going to fix things moving forward.”

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Yesterday Facebook and Twitter, long reluctant to do any censoring of President Donald Trump’s posts—even if they contained disinformation and false conspiracy theories, or incited violence and division—banned Trump from their platforms for 24 and 12 hours, respectively.

The move came after they removed a video the President posted where he told the rioters in D.C., “I know your pain, I know you’re hurt. We had an election that was stolen from us. It was a landslide election and everyone knows it, especially the other side. But you have to go home now…This was a fraudulent election, but we can’t play into the hands of these people. We have to have peace. So go home. We love you, you’re very special.” There has been no evidence of massive voter fraud in the 2020 election that Trump’s challenger Joe Biden won, and courts, including the Supreme Court, have ruled against or dismissed any challenges.

This is not Gomez’s first time calling out the social media companies for allowing hate speech and disinformation to spread on their platforms. In December, the singer called out Facebook and Instagram for not taking down neo-Nazi pages. Gomez shared the post from the Center for Countering Digital Hate, which pointed out Neo-Nazi accounts on both Instagram and Facebook still active and selling merchandise through their platforms. She added in her retweet, “I’m speechless. @Facebook @Instagram how are you tolerating this hate? There’s still accounts there even though you have been notified!!”

Most recently, Gomez singled out Facebook for allowing disinformation about the COVID-19 vaccine to spread on its platform. “Scientific disinformation has and will cost lives,” she wrote. “@Facebook said they don’t allow lies about COVID and vaccines to be spread on their platforms. So how come all of this is still happening? Facebook is going to be responsible for thousands of deaths if they don’t take action now!”

Twitter Reacts to Georgia’s Historic Election Handing Democrats the Senate

Georgia has been on the minds of Americans for weeks now. Both Democrats and Republicans anticipated Tuesday night and an historic runoff election that will decide which party controls the Senate. This morning, CNN projected that Democrat Rev. Raphael Warnock beat incumbent Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler in a tight race. Democrat Jon Ossoff is also edging closer to victory over incumbent Republican Sen. David Perdue in a race that remains too close to call.

President-elect Joe Biden needs both seats in the Senate in order to enact key legislation in his administration. Winning both seats would create a 50-50 party split with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris as the tie-breaking vote. GOP victory would maintain Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s standing. With Warnock’s projected win, he’s slated to become the first Black senator from Georgia and the first Democrat the state would send to the Senate in 20 years. This achievement comes on the heels of Georgia going blue in the presidential election for the first time since 1992. “Joy comes in the morning. Thank you, Georgia,” Warnock, a senior pastor of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, tweeted on Wednesday.

As the world awaits definitive results from the Ossoff-Perdue race, many are praising the organizing efforts of Stacey Abrams. After losing a highly-contested Georgia governor race in 2018, she founded the voting rights organization Fair Fight. Abrams’ efforts, along with those of other Black and female organizers, inspired record turnout and may have helped flip Georgia blue in the Senate.

Here are some of the best reactions to Georgia’s groundbreaking results from Hillary Clinton, Kerry Washington, Katie Porter, and more.
