The Best Essential Oils For Sleep, According to Experts

In any given year, one in four American adults experiences insomnia. As anyone who has ever spent the night tossing and turning knows, it’s seriously unpleasant to go about your day after a night of insufficient sleep. Sleep deprivation can cause headaches, mood swings, and trouble concentrating.

Doctors sometimes prescribe sleep aids as a quick fix, but these medications can have serious side effects. A far better solution is to work on developing healthy sleep habits and a relaxing bedtime routine, which might include meditation, reading, and yes, essential oils. There’s no shortage of essential oils out there, but doctors say certain oils are beneficial to sleep and relaxation. These are the four the experts POPSUGAR spoke with recommend most.

Tennis Star Naomi Osaka Is the New Face of Louis Vuitton

Naomi Osaka and Nicolas Ghesquière

Naomi Osaka is the newest face of Louis Vuitton. The 23-year-old tennis superstar joins Alicia Vikander, Léa Seydoux and Emma Stone, among other celebrities, as ambassadors for the French luxury label. Osaka will appear in the brand’s spring-summer 2021 campaign photographed by Louis Vuitton’s artistic director of women’s collections, Nicolas Ghesquière.

“Aside from tennis, my most treasured passion is fashion; and there is no brand more iconic than Louis Vuitton,” said Osaka, the reigning champion at the U.S. open, in a press release. “It is such an honour to work with Nicolas – he’s a designer I admire so much and we share a mutual love of Japanese culture and style. To become global brand ambassador is truly a dream come true for me.”

Osaka also shared this anecdote via Twitter: “Funny story,” she tweeted. “I first bought my mom a LV bag when I was 16 as a birthday present and it’s kinda been a tradition since. Do I call this a full circle moment? Yes.”

Ghesquière calls Osaka “exceptional” and a role model. “Her career and convictions are inspiring,” he said. “I am in awe of Naomi, she stays true to herself and doesn’t compromise on her values.”

Osaka, the daughter of a Haitian father and Japanese mother, is the first Asian player to hold the No.1 ranking in singles and the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam (of which she has won a total of three). She competes for Japan, where she was born, and will be the face of the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games. Osaka currently lives in Los Angeles.

Everything We Know About Cole Tucker, Vanessa Hudgens’ MLB Player Boyfriend, and Their Romance

Vanessa Hudgens is ringing in 2021 with a new boyfriend, according to E!. A source told the outlet that Hudgens, 32, is exclusively dating Pittsburgh Pirates baseball player Cole Tucker, 24. “They are boyfriend and girlfriend,” a source told the outlet. “They rang in the New Year together.” News of their romance arrives about a year after her split from Austin Butler after nearly nine years together.

Ahead, everything we know about Hudgens’ new love, including proof that Tucker has seen his fair share of High School Musical.

He’s a shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Tucker hails from Phoenix, Arizona and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates as their shortstop in 2014. According to Baseball Reference, he was the 24th pick of the 1st round and made his professional debut in April 2019. The 6’3″ player has shifted between shortstop and outfielder positions as a Pirate. However, he suffered a concussion in fall 2020 that benched him for the remainder of the season, according to CBS Sports.

In December 2020, Hudgens reportedly visited Tucker in his hometown of Phoenix, as noted by the Daily Mail. She shared a photo of herself and friend GG Magree hanging out at the city’s Papago Park Amphitheater. “Real hot girl sh*t🤘🏽” Hudgens captioned the snaps.

He and Hudgens have been linked since November 2020.

Rumors of the couple’s romance started on November 21, when Hudgens wrote, “Date night 💖” alongside a photo of herself holding a pink rose.

That same night, the pair was spotted by paparazzi cuddling outside of the Canyon Country Store in Los Angeles. The Daily Mail ran photos. The following evening, Tucker and Hudgens enjoyed a dinner date at Pace in Laurel Canyon.”They had a romantic dinner outside under the stars,” an eyewitness told the outlet. “They shared wine and food and had a great two-hour meal. Vanessa was giddy with laughter. She was looking over at Cole and couldn’t contain her smile.”

Hudgens most recently dated actor Butler before their split in January 2020. Although they reportedly discussed getting engaged, a source told E! that they had “split for now” but were “going to see what happens. They have such a history and deep connection they could find their way back to one another. Right now she felt like he needed to go and be single and see if that’s what he really wants.”

By the end of that month, Hudgens was seen with Los Angeles Lakers player Kyle Kuzma. “They’re seeing each other, but taking things slow and just having fun at this stage,” a source told People at the time.

His brother Carson is also an MLB player.

Cole isn’t the only Tucker family member to become a professional baseball player. His younger brother Carson was a first-round pick shortstop in 2020, drafted by the Cleveland Indians, according to MLB. Cole has been nothing but supportive of his younger brother, telling the outlet, “Like, Carson Tucker’s my favorite player, and I’m rooting for him and pulling for him and following his every move. I’m just trying to be as much a part of the process as I can and putting my big-brother hat on and also putting my baseball-player hat on, just because I have a lot of experience with the process.”

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

His love for High School Musical is well-documented.

Another important thing to note about Tucker: he’s well-versed in all things High School Musical. A scroll through his Twitter reveals that Tucker retweeted High School Musical-related memes in both July and August of 2020. He also tweeted, “In search of: A girl who’s down to watch High School Musical with me and scratch my back,” back in January 2012, as uncovered by MLB.

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

As for the inspiration behind his enviable curls? Tucker told The Athletic, via MLB, that he was influenced by Corbin Bleu’s baseball player HSM character, Chad Danforth. “I thought that Corbin Bleu was the coolest person on Earth, and he had hair just like I do now—the long, ringlet curls,” Tucker told the outlet. “When I was in fourth grade, I was like, ‘Man, I am going to grow out my hair. I’m going to look like Corbin Bleu and it’s going to be the coolest thing ever.’ I did it and I’m still doing it. I sound like such a nerd right now, but that’s really what happened. It kind of became my thing.”

He’s a movie buff.

While Tucker and Hudgens are in different fields, he does know a thing or two about filmmaking. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Tucker “always tries to predict Oscar winners” and asked him about his favorite baseball movies. Film with the best love story went to Bull Durham, starring Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon. Field of Dreams was his pick for most overrated baseball movie, and The Sandlot was his favorite for kids. “This movie reminds me the most of what it’s like to be a kid and just want nothing more than to play ball with your friends,” Tucker said of The Sandlot. “As we grow up and baseball becomes a job, it’s important to look back and remember how fun it is to just play the game.”

He plays instruments.

Perhaps another thing Hudgens and Tucker bonded on is music. While he doesn’t have a hit solo album like his rumored partner, Tucker enjoys playing instruments off the field. He has shared photos on Instagram that feature his drum playing skills and custom painted guitar.

Tucker and Hudgens follow each other, but haven’t gone IG official.

Hudgens and Tucker have yet to go Instagram official as a couple. But they do follow each other and interact on the ‘gram. He hasn’t liked her recent photos, but Hudgens likes his and will even comment on occasion. She liked Tucker’s latest post, a photo dump captioned, “Winter break.” Hudgens commented, “Last pic faveeeeee 😍❤️” and “Well fuck and lord b’s nook. Call me biased.”

Shimmy, Flip, and Blow a Kiss: Watch This Gymnast’s Prince-Inspired Floor Routine

College gymnastics is back! Select teams across the country began competing in their health-regulated 2021 seasons over the weekend, and Georgia University’s Soraya Hawthorne came out to entertain and tumble hard. The sophomore from Memphis, TN, showcased a floor routine on Jan. 8 against the University of Missouri set to music from the late legend Prince.

Hawthorne opened up with an explosive double pike, and she shimmied, body rolled, and leapt along to “When Doves Cry” and, of course, “Kiss.” You can hear Prince himself in some of the audio, and the routine even reminds us of a popular performance that former UCLA gymnast Katelyn Ohashi did in 2019. Hawthorne received a 9.825, less than two tenths away from a perfect score. She’s all smiles, power, and Prince energy — and we’re all for it!

The Top Hair Trends of 2021, According to Celeb Stylist Chris Appleton

Leave it to Jennifer Lopez to start the year with 2021’s most aspirational hair. ICYMI, the singer performed in Times Square on New Year’s Eve with her signature blonde mane in top shape, thanks to hairstylist Chris Appleton. Appleton, the mastermind behind Lopez’s viral Super Bowl look, was inspired by J.Lo’s head-banging choreography. “We went for a bang, kind of shag look. There’s a little bit of a rock and roll vibe, so we wanted to kind of emphasize that on the hair, so when Jen shakes her hair, you can see it all moving,” Appleton explains. “The Color Wow Dream Coat for Curly Hair really helped me get some texture in the hair and then just curling the hair, leaving the ends out and then a blast of texturizing spray really did the job of giving this lived in, sexy rock and roll vibe.” Ahead, Appleton breaks down the biggest hair trends of 2021.

    Super Shaggy

Take a page out of J.Lo’s book and try an effortless shag haircut. Next time you visit your stylist, Appleton suggests asking for “a lot of layers” that can add dimension and depth to your cut. This will help create that “rocker chic vibe” that Lopez wore on stage.

    Curls

If there’s one thing quarantine taught our beauty routines, it’s that less is always more. Ditch the styling tools and “embrace your natural curls and texture.” Curls create a great foundation for pretty updos that can be achieved with some clips and bobby pins.

    Classic Bob

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

2021 is the year to make the big chop! Dare to go short with a classic bob that hits just below the chin. To keep the look modern, Appleton recommends making the hair “shiny and full of bounce.” Get extra volume by blow drying hair with a round brush, combing towards to the face.

    Face-Framing Bangs

Curtain bangs are all the rage right now—and for good reason. The popular 70’s hairstyle got a 2021 update that looks great on everyone, thanks to its “face-framing” style. The best part? This type of fringe is low maintenance and grows out pretty seamlessly.

At Home, on Zoom, With Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and Her Family

After one of the saddest days in U.S. history earlier this week, the Harris-Emhoff family is here to bless our timelines with five minutes of pure joy. Like many families across the U.S. during the pandemic, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff have been gathering on Zoom with far-flung family members most Sundays. The chats bring together grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, children, and siblings from across the country and around the world, including Canada, India, and Italy. (The VP-elect’s team wouldn’t give us a full list of who’s who and their exact locations due to security concerns.)

In this oh so relatable video, filmed on January 3, we learn the soon to be Second Family is…just like us! They pass out early on New Year’s Eve, wear the same sweatshirt over and over (thanks for affirming my hygiene choices, Doug!), and have mixed feelings about eating the same leftovers for days on end. We also learn how the VP-elect rang in the New Year. Doug cooked “the best steaks in the world,” on December 31, while Kamala cooked a feast of black-eyed peas, greens, cornbread, and fried catfish on New Year’s Day. (Ella, I see you drooling over the menu and…same.)

    the harris emhoff family zoom

Members of the Harris-Emhoff family gathered on Zoom on Sunday, January 3, to mark the New Year.

    Biden-Harris Transition

As hard as the last year has been, one silver lining for many—including the Harris-Emhoffs—has been realizing that in a remote world, our relationships with family and friends are no longer dictated by geography. “We are so blessed as a family to have each other, and all the zooms—Doug and I talk about it all the time—all the Zooms that we’ve been doing every Sunday some combination of all the family,” Kamala says.

“There’s no way we could have gotten through this crazy year without you and doing these Zooms,” Doug adds. “We have said to each other, like everyone, we’re sad we can’t be with everyone in person, but then we say, but we’re so much closer with our entire family because of these Zooms.”

    Jodie Turner-Smith in Bloom

You know that saying about how anything Fred Astaire did, Ginger Rogers did backward and in high heels? It comes to mind as Jodie Turner-Smith recounts filming the action movie Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse while in her second trimester of pregnancy—something her costars Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell were quite assuredly not dealing with. “The men think they’re hard-core,” the actress says, cracking up, “but they could never do what they do while also making a baby. They just couldn’t.”

    RUTH OSSAI

For Turner-Smith, the fight scenes took a back seat to the humanity of the story. “True strength is not found in force and brutality, but in vulnerability,” she says. “I would love to do more action, and action where I’m allowed to be a woman,” she adds, citing Sigourney Weaver’s classic turn in Alien. “I know we don’t maybe class that as specifically an action film, but I mean, what she’s doing in that? Fucking brilliant.”

On the opposite end of the spectrum—except in the sense that she’s also what a streaming-service menu might consider a Strong Female Lead—is Anne Boleyn, whom Turner-Smith has signed on to play in an as-yet-unnamed series. The English queen’s tragic story has been told countless times via film (The Other Boleyn Girl), musical theater (Six), and literary fiction (Hilary Mantel’s Bring Up the Bodies), but Turner-Smith has a theory about why we’re still, nearly a half-millennium after her beheading, so enthralled by her. “We can only infer who she was, because she left no paper trail that would hint at her imagination. She’s endlessly fascinating for that reason,” she says. With her portrayal, Turner-Smith wanted to “tell the story of the woman who sits at the center of the myth, and make that story an accessible one—one that’s not entirely about class, but about humanity. Because whether a woman is a queen or a housekeeper, she is not exempt from any of the challenges and trials that women face in navigating their bodies, love, or the patriarchy,” she says. “There’s an opportunity to tell a really human story and for it to feel that much more accessible because a Black woman is playing her.”

As if this weren’t already enough range for one person, Turner-Smith is also playing opposite Colin Farrell in After Yang, about a family with a robot among its ranks. While the film has a sci-fi bent, it also has, she insists, a very intimate focus on “family and connection and what that really means in the age of technology.”

“Black artists are not only the engine, but also the car. We are in the driver’s seat.”

Turner-Smith, of course, is no stranger to tackling weighty issues onscreen. In 2019, she starred in Melina Matsoukas’s Queen & Slim, a tale of Black love and survival that has become even more powerful in the wake of this past summer’s Black Lives Matter protests. “I really think that we made a classic, and [that] 10 years from now, it will be viewed that way as well,” she says. “Black artists are not only the engine, but also the car. We are in the driver’s seat, telling our own stories.” Including Turner-Smith herself, who made her directorial debut this fall with Jackie, a short film created in collaboration with Gucci and Dazed magazine (she became an ambassador for the house in 2019). To finally be behind the camera, she says, was “so incredible, so empowering. To have my hand in everything—to choose every shot, every look, and approve every piece of set decoration; to see the edit, and sit for hours and select the color grade” was her idea of heaven. Her husband, actor Joshua Jackson, “sat with me, being my biggest supporter and my brain trust, and we watched all these references, and he let me bounce all these ideas off him until all hours of the morning.” Her relationship with the Gucci team, including the house’s polymath creative director, Alessandro Michele, sounds similarly collaborative. Working with them “is so natural and feels so lived-in,” she says.

      jodie turner smith

Ken Scott printed dress, earrings, $1750, slingback pumps, $790, The North Face x Gucci. Vintage Gloves and tights.

      RUTH OSSAI

Speaking of natural and lived-in, here Turner-Smith wears pieces from the house’s glamping-friendly capsule with The North Face. Thanks to Jackson, who grew up in Vancouver, she’s been converted to the outdoor lifestyle. “If we can mix fashion with me getting my outdoor situations on, it’s a very beautiful marriage of two things,” she says, adding that for her lately, fashion has become a form of self-care. She likes “this idea of dressing up for you, of putting something on to enhance your own mood, just to do what you want to do and not necessarily even leave the house—because right now we’re not even doing that. It’s like telling a story about how you feel with what you wear,” she says. “We all need a little bit of carefree energy right now.”

      jodie turner smith

Shirt, $1500, skirt, $1500, earrings, $1590, necklace, $2800, The North Face x Gucci. Vintage gloves and bracelets.

      Ruth Ossai

In between acting and directing, Turner-Smith recently gave birth to her daughter. Doing so during a global pandemic has been challenging, but Turner-Smith is grateful to have had her mother by her side throughout. “Navigating parenthood at any time is difficult,” she says, “and it’s even more difficult without support, when everything is shut down and you can’t really see other people or go anywhere.” She’s quick to point out that moms of school-age children have it much harder right now: “I’m not having to sit on Zoom with her and suddenly become her educator as well as her caretaker,” she says of her daughter. Childbirth ultimately taught her another lesson about strength. “Patriarchal society really is out here, scamming women into thinking that they’re not supremely powerful beings,” she says, chuckling. “Because damn, it’s some goddess-level shit.” ▪

Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Are Reportedly Quitting Social Media Permanently

      commonwealth day service 2020

      Samir HusseinGetty Images

On January 8, 2020—the start of the longest year in history—Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced that they would be moving away from their roles as senior royals. It seems they are not done making significant changes in their lives as they move away from royal life.

A source close to the royals told The Sunday Times that the couple has “no plans” to use social media for their new Achewell Foundation and that they are “very unlikely” to return to their personal accounts.

The source says that the “hate” the couple has received on social media is the main reason behind their decision to reject social media.

This past October, Meghan did a guest spot on a special World Mental Health Day interview for the podcast Teenager Therapy, where she discussed her own battle with social media bullying.

“I’m told that in 2019 I was the most trolled person in the entire world—male or female,” she said. “Now, eight months of that I wasn’t even visible. I was on maternity leave or with a baby but was able to just be manufactured and churned out. It’s almost unsurvivable. That’s so big you can’t even think of what that feels like, because I don’t care if you’re 15 or you’re 25, if people are saying things about you that aren’t true, what that does to your mental and emotional health is so damaging.”

She added that she and Harry use their own personal experiences to help others process theirs, but she understands that everyone deals with things differently.

“We all know what it feels like to have our feelings hurt,” she said. “We all know what it feels like to be isolated or othered.”

Meghan Markle Can No Longer Apply for UK Citizenship

      commonwealth day service 2020

      Chris JacksonGetty Images

After Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their plans to exit their official royal roles, some people tracking the story wondered if this move might affect Meghan’s application for U.K. citizenship.

At the time of Harry and Meghan’s wedding in the spring of 2018, a spokesperson for the duchess told CNN that Meghan was planning on becoming a dual citizen of the U.K. and the U.S. and that it was “too early to say” if she would retain that dual status. But now, The Telegraph reports that Meghan has “abandoned plans” to become a U.K. citizen.

Per the gov.uk website, Meghan would have had to live in the U.K. for a minimum of three years in order to apply for citizenship as a spouse or civil partner (in her case, spouse). As Us Weekly pointed out, Meghan moved out of the U.K. last year, before she reached the three-year mark. She moved to the U.K. in November 2017, so she would have had to have lived there until at least fall 2020.

Harry and Meghan now live in Montecito, California, where they have a new home with their son, Archie, who turns 2 years old in May.

A source close to the couple told Entertainment Tonight that Meghan and Harry have “no regrets” about their decision to move away from royal life. “[They] feel very rewarded from their work,” the source added, referring to the couple’s new foundation, Archewell.

“Despite everything that has been going on this year, they don’t regret their move to the U.S.,” a source told People. “They love that they are able to focus on projects and causes that are important to them.” A source close to the prince also revealed: “It was always their dream to be financially independent and pay their own way. [2020] started out with a lot of excitement and anticipation. Harry was finally doing what he’d wanted to do for years, and to have Meghan and [20-month-old son] Archie with him was all he could have asked for.”

Melania Trump Was Reportedly Overseeing a Photoshoot of Rugs While a Mob Took Over the Capitol

      The Washington PostGetty Images

On Wednesday, January 6, thousands of Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol building during a joint session of Congress. For the rest of the week, if you turned on the news or opened Twitter, there’s a good chance you’d exclusively see mention of this event (or the fact that Trump has been permanently banned from Twitter).

While all of this was happening on this, a day that will forever live in infamy, First Lady Melania Trump was overseeing a photoshoot of “rugs and other items in the Executive Residence and the East Wing,” a source close to the White House and the East Wing told CNN.

In December, CNN also noted that the first lady is reportedly interested in writing a coffee-table book:

“Trump is said to be toying with writing a photo-centric coffee table book about White House hospitality history, or one perhaps centered on the design projects she has completed while first lady, according to a source in the publishing industry familiar with preliminary discussions.”

“Mrs. Trump is focused on her role as first lady,” her former chief of staff, Stephanie Grisham, told CNN in the report published December 9. “Monday she unveiled her most current effort in preserving the White House by announcing the completion of the tennis pavilion. She also recently unveiled a new piece of art in the newly renovated Rose Garden. Her office just revealed this year’s Christmas décor. Her schedule remains full with her duties as a mother, wife and first lady of the United States.”

Grisham resigned from her role following Wednesday’s Capitol riots.

LeBron James Called Out the Double Standard We All Saw During the Pro-Trump Riot

One of the most disturbing parts (and there were many) of Wednesday’s pro-Trump riot at the Capitol was just how easily the mob was able to break into the building. For hours, rioters had the run of the Capitol while law enforcement appeared incompetent and at times nonexistent, even taking selfies with rioters and carefully escorting them down the Capitol steps. Compare that to the often forceful and violent police presence throughout Black Lives Matter protests over the past several years; compare that to the brutality with which police treat Black people in nearly any situation, as MSNBC host Joy Reid pointed out.

“We live in two Americas,” LeBron James said on Thursday, becoming the latest NBA star to decry the riots. “If you don’t understand that or don’t see that after seeing what you saw yesterday, then you really need to take a step back.” As he watched the mostly white mob storm the building, James said he “couldn’t help but to wonder, if those were my kind storming the Capitol, what would’ve been the outcome?”

James joined coach Doc Rivers of the Philadelphia Sixers and players like Draymond Green in speaking out against the riots, the latest instance of NBA stars using their platforms for racial and political activism. “It’s baffling to see the reaction the law enforcement had,” Warriors forward Green said on Thursday, calling the riot a terrorist attack. “They’re not f*cking protesters. They’re f*cking terrorists,” he said of the mob. Rivers raised similar points in a pregame press conference on Wednesday, asking, “Could you imagine today if those were all Black people storming the Capitol, and what would’ve happened?” Meanwhile, teams across the league knelt during the national anthem and linked arms on the court to protest the riots.

“How do we want America to be viewed as? How do we want to live in this beautiful country?” James asked. “Because yesterday was not it.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Want 2021 to Be a ‘Time of Healing’

the duke and duchess of sussex attend the endeavour fund awards

      Max Mumby/IndigoGetty Images

One year ago this week, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced that they would be stepping down from their roles as senior members of the royal family. Since then, they’ve permanently moved to the Los Angeles area, where they have a home with their son, Archie, in Montecito.

The couple officially wrapped their royal duties in March, and because of the pandemic, they’ve stayed close to home. But a source told People that Meghan and Harry are “hoping 2021 can be a time of healing not just for the world, but for their family.”

There have long been rumors of a rift between Prince William and Harry, but in an interview with ELLE.com last week, Robert Lacey, author of Battle of Brothers: William and Harry–The Inside Story of a Family in Tumult, said there is hope for a reconciliation. He added that if the brothers’ mother, Princess Diana, were still alive, there might never have been a conflict between them at all.

“She would say ‘come on boys, it’s time to end this social distancing.’ No, I don’t think [the feud] would have happened if Diana had been alive. One of the tragedies of her death was that it deprived them [William and Harry] of their more active parent. There’s a sense in which William become too close to his mother as things started to go wrong; she lent on him and relied on him which, I think, robbed him to some degree of his youth and is one of the sources of [William’s] anger. I think her emphasis on getting the boys to speak their minds to each other and say what’s on their minds would have come into play.”

Last week, a source told Entertainment Tonight that Harry and Meghan have “no regrets” about their decision to move away from their royal roles and to their new home in the U.S.

If You Feel Stuck Clearing Your Mind While Meditating, Headspace’s Cofounder Says You’re Doing It Wrong

Sitting down to meditate can be daunting, and Headspace cofounder and former monk Andy Puddicombe knows that there are many misconceptions about the practice. One of which — and the biggest, he said — is that in order to meditate, you have to clear your mind. That, Puddicombe told POPSUGAR, is not the point of meditation. The point is to actually think your thoughts, feel your feelings, and let them pass you by.

It’s similar to what Puddicombe explains in the new Netflix series Headspace Guide to Meditation, of which he was executive producer: during his time as a monk, a teacher described meditation as sitting on the side of the road and watching cars without chasing them. Essentially, you learn how to accept what comes your way while meditating without getting too caught up and going after your thoughts.

“I’ve sat in meditation with a big smile on my face, I’ve sat in meditation and I’ve laughed. I’ve also sat in meditation with tears running down my cheeks.”

Puddicombe further explained during our interview that most people think meditation calls for stopping thoughts, when in reality, there’s no pressure to do so. “It’s more about stepping back and seeing our thoughts more clearly and finding a place of contentment where we can watch thoughts come and go, watch emotions come and go . . . it’s a bit like watching the weather come and go . . . without getting overwhelmed by it, without getting distracted by it.”

Puddicombe continued, “Over time, the more we learn to watch with less judgement and less distraction, the mind naturally slows down, and then we do actually get to experience a quieter mind, but it happens sort of naturally, not through force.” The important part of this practice, especially when first starting out, is not so much the technique but the approach.

While focusing on your breath, if you get angry at yourself every time your thoughts wander, meditating is going to be extremely stressful. Same goes for embracing emotions: if you try to resist the thoughts that come into your mind — or get frustrated that the thoughts are perhaps making you sad — it will be equally as stressful.

It’s completely normal for your mind to wander even for up to five minutes at a time. “It’s like sitting down at the piano and playing a wrong note and saying, ‘Oh, no! I can’t play the piano!’ Well, playing the wrong note is part of learning to play the piano,” Puddicombe stated. With practice, the wandering won’t be as frequent.

Puddicombe pointed out that experiencing feelings as you meditate — even ones you aren’t so thrilled to be experiencing — is also normal. Emotions are part of being human, and if they’re stirred up during meditation, that’s OK. “I can tell you I’ve sat in meditation with a big smile on my face, I’ve sat in meditation and I’ve laughed. I’ve also sat in meditation with tears running down my cheeks,” he said. “And that is really, really common.”

“We have a full range of emotions. We’re going to experience all of them in life. None of them are wrong.”

He compared this to bubbles coming to water’s surface. “The more space and time we can give those things to come to the surface and sit with them, actually the easier we’re going to feel in our body and in our mind,” Puddicombe said, adding that we don’t need to do anything to combat them. “Instinctively as humans, for whatever reason, we don’t want to experience that pain or that discomfort. But that’s actually part of the human condition. We have a full range of emotions. We’re going to experience all of them in life. None of them are wrong.”

Feeling those emotions, Puddicombe said, is, in a way, part of letting go of them. It’s part of vulnerability. So the next time you’re worried meditation might not be for you, remember that you don’t have to clear your mind. You just have to embrace it. Moreover, redefining what meditation is before you start is key. Remember that your mind will wander — that there’s no rulebook for what you can and cannot think about — and training yourself to accept that, Puddicombe noted, “is a journey of a lifetime.”

Regé-Jean Page Addresses the Internet Rumors That He’s Going to Be the Next James Bond

premiere of universal pictures' "mortal engines" red carpet

      Morgan LiebermanGetty Images

Regé-Jean Page, the actor who plays the sexy Duke of Hastings, aka Simon Basset, in Netflix’s Bridgerton, has been the subject of recent rumors that he will be the next James Bond. When you’re a person with a British accent (or anyone, really), that’s a pretty high compliment to receive, even if it’s not true.

On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Friday, Page addressed the reports. When Fallon said that the betting odds were “at 5 to 1” that the Bridgerton star would be filling Daniel Craig’s shoes, Page laughed.

“I think the internet thinks a lot of things, and that’s one of the more pleasant ones,” Page said with a smile. “So I can please as far as that goes. “I think there might be an element of cultural translation to be done here. Like if you’re a Brit, and you do something of any kind of renowned that people regard well, then people start saying the ‘B’ word. It’s like a merit badge, like the ‘B’ word merit badge.” But, he added: “I don’t think it’s more than that.”

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

It doesn’t seem as if Page is going to be gracing the screen as Bond any time soon, but he has already impressed the world in his steamy role as the duke. He explained the show to Fallon as “Jane Austen meets Gossip Girl meets 35 shades of grey.”

In a December interview with InStyle, Page said he likes to be part of projects, such as his recents Bridgerton and Sylvie’s Love, that show Black people experiencing joy, especially in the context of historical fiction.

“What happens in culture often is, you go back in time and only white folks are happy,” he said. “And you know what? We’ve all known how to smile since the beginning of time. We’ve all gotten married since the beginning of time. We’ve all had romance, glamour, and splendor. Representing that is incredibly important, because period drama for people who aren’t white shouldn’t mean only spotlighting trauma.”

A New Canadian Zero-Waste Haircare Brand + Other Notable Beauty News This Week

From a gorgeous spring makeup collection from Chanel to big news in sustainable beauty.

Meet Everist, a Local Haircare Line of Eco-Friendly In-Shower Pastes

      Courtesy of Everist

Clean, waterless and zero-waste. These three big terms are what pushed Toronto-based founders Jayme Jenkins and Jessica Stevenson, who both hail from Big Beauty (think: stints at Giorgio Aramni, Revlon and YSL) to set out on their own and disrupt the industry with their new brand, Everist, a line consisting of patent-pending shampoo and conditioner pastes that officially became available for pre-order earlier this week. “One thing we saw from the inside is this consumer demand for cleaner alternatives and more sustainable options from these big brands. We both tried to influence from the inside, but we just found it super difficult to steer the direction,” says Jenkins. “We decided if we wanted to see something come to life, we had to do it ourselves.” For the duo, the biggest area in need of an eco-friendly overhaul was in haircare, where the founders discovered that most traditional shampoo and conditioner formulas are packaged in single-use plastics and filled with more than 70 percent water (which can easily breed bacteria and destabilize active ingredients) as well as many synthetic preservatives.

To help solve these issues, Jenkins and Stevenson landed on their waterless in-shower pastes that are free from parabens, sulfates, silicones, dyes and synthetic fragrances and instead packed with natural ingredients, like gentle coconut-derived cleansing agents, moisturizing vegetable glycerin and a blend of over five essential oils with scalp benefits. As for the innovative packaging, each travel-friendly 100 mL aluminum tube is the product equivalent of a standard 300 mL bottle and is easily recyclable curb-side. The brand even has a unique recycling program for its plastic caps: “Our products come with a little cotton bag where you can collect all your caps,” explains Jenkins. “Once it’s full, you just go to our website, put in your address and we send you a return shipping label to send them back at our cost.”

Okoko Cosmétiques Opened its First Retail Concept in Vancouver

      Courtesy of Okoko Cosmétiques

Know for its high-performing and clean skincare, Black-owned Canadian indie brand Okoko Cosmétiques opened the doors to its very-first retail shop on January 6th. Located inside of its manufacturing facility in the heart of Vancouver’s trendy Gastown neighbourhood, the new storefront, called L’Atelier Okoko, carries all the luxe Okoko Cosmétiques favourites along with a selection of other products from other green beauty brands, including non-toxic nail polish, organic supplements and teas. The flagship store also offers personalized and holistic consultations from Okoko’s team of beauty formulators.

Chanel Dropped its Spring 2021 Makeup Collection, Les Fleurs de Chanel

      Courtesy of Chanel

You can always count on Chanel for eye-catching makeup launches. For its latest spring colour assortment, which officially launched on January 4th, the French luxury house pulled inspiration from a cluster of flowers (think: camellias, peonies, anthuriums, pansies among many others) to dream up a nine-piece collection comprised of warm, earthy hues, like coral orange, bronze, copper and sumptuous pinks and reds. As for the makeup goods, you’ll find a shimmery, flower-embossed blush palette ($90); a terracotta-brown mascara ($43), two high-shine lip lacquers ($48 each), two velvety lipsticks ($48 each), and three signature Le Vernis nail polish colours ($35 each).

Ole Henriksen Has a New Facial Scrub

      Courtesy of Ole Henriksen

When it comes to the go-to products needed to have and maintain a glowing complexion, a facial exfoliator should be high up on your list. Not only does the act of exfoliating help slough away dead skin cells to make room for newer, more radiant ones, but resurfacing the skin also helps other skincare products penetrate more deeply — and work better as a result. Made with AHAs, plus sugar exfoliants and lemon peel extracts, this new physical-meets-chemical hybrid by Ole Henriksen, Lemonade Smoothing Scrub ($42), is suitable for all skin types to visibly re-texturize and polish the complexion. The formula also contains basil chamomile extract which work in tandem to soothe and calm.

Clean Beauty Brand Ilia Beauty Launched a Winter-Worthy Lip Treatment

      Courtesy of Ilia Beauty

With the temperature outside only continuing to plummet, a heavy-duty lip hydrator is a must-own right now to keep lips from getting chapped. Just as its name suggests, Ilia Beauty’s new Lip Wrap Hydrating Mask ($34) is rich in texture and in good-for-you-skin ingredients. It contains salicornia herbacea extract and hyaloronic acid to deeply moisturize lips, plus papaya enzymes that work to gently buff way any dead skin to clear the way for deeper ingredient penetration.

Pieces of a Woman Fails to Live Up to Its Title

Major spoilers for Pieces of a Woman below.

Director Kornél Mundruczó’s drama, Pieces of a Woman, has all the ingredients for a remarkable film in its unrelenting look at a wife (Vanessa Kirby) reeling from the death of her baby just minutes after birth. But as much as the film puts the agony of a woman’s experience into razor-sharp focus—including an excruciating, 23-minute labor scene that makes her ensuing grief even more palpable—it fails to live up to the promise of own title, neglecting to peel back the layers of what could otherwise be a compelling female character.

That’s certainly not due to Kirby’s performance. She elevates Martha, a woman whose backstory and thoughts are virtually muted, into a recognizable human in ways Kata Wéber’s screenplay does not. Though Mundruczó and Wéber, who are married in real life and were inspired by their own trauma, deserve praise for delving into a complicated and still-taboo topic, they neglect to give Martha agency in her own story. She’s reduced to a reflection of how others see her: “cold.”

It doesn’t help that Pieces of a Woman spends no time getting to know Martha in the precious few minutes of the film that precede her labor. When we meet her, she’s making her way out of her office baby shower just before maternity leave. With little dialogue and Kirby’s subtle portrayal, it’s hard to tell if she’s excited, nervous, or miserable. We don’t even know what kind of job she does. These are all tiny details that can add color to a character and provide context about who she was before the tragedy.

In contrast, Martha’s blue-collar husband, Sean (Shia LeBeouf), gets a robust introduction. The film opens with him exchanging jokes with colleagues at a construction site. Within seconds, we learn his occupation, his wife’s name, that he has a daughter on the way, and that he’s unquestionably eager for impending fatherhood. In a scene where he meets Martha and her well-to-do mother, Elizabeth (Ellen Burstyn), at a dealership where the latter co-signs for the couple’s new car, it’s made clear he doesn’t get along with his mother-in-law. Sean even goes as far as to tell Martha that her mother “wants to emasculate” him by purchasing a car he can afford. Meanwhile, we get nothing about the state of Martha and Elizabeth’s relationship—or Martha’s mindset, for that matter.

pieces of a woman l to r ellen burstyn as elizabeth and vanessa kirby as martha

      Benjamin Loeb / Netflix

That is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Sean, whose storyline achingly unfolds through LaBeouf’s vulnerable performance. But these opening sequences at least give us a sense of who he is before the pivotal scene. It’s frustrating that Martha, the female protagonist, doesn’t get the same treatment. It’s even more glaring when she melts into her grief and withdraws following the baby’s death. The filmmakers decide to have the rest of the characters wrestle with how they think she feels, whether to blame the midwife, Eva (Molly Parker), or Martha’s decision to donate her baby’s body to medical research, instead of just asking her.

The result ices Martha out of her own story. She quietly seethes as we watch her, primarily through her family’s eyes, become an abstract figure who emotionally fades into the distance. The only time we ever hear her is when she objects to something someone else wants to do—sex with her husband, burying their dead baby, or taking the midwife to trial for the sake of “justice,” as Elizabeth says. We rarely get insight into Martha’s own journey until toward the end of the film. She’s mostly an enigma.

While that’s partly because she’s curiously drawn through other characters’ perspectives, it could also be due to the fact that, as personal as this story is to Wéber, she told The Hollywood Reporter that it’s “highly fictionalized.” She draws from the experiences of a variety of women who’ve dealt with losing a child, not just her own first-hand account, to build a narrative that is “about women and motherhood.” But that amalgamation forms a nebulous, somewhat contrived female character with marginal identity. And with nary a friend or other confidante to whom she can express herself, we don’t even get a sense of what motherhood means to her.

That puts a lot of weight on Kirby’s performance, as volcanic as it is internal, to drive Wéber’s themes home as the film bubbles toward a conclusion. While a spat between Martha and Elizabeth finally articulates the root of their mounting tension, it only scantily reflects on how their relationship—including Elizabeth’s own trauma—exacerbated Martha’s grieving process. It’s only at the end, when Martha is in a courtroom facing a teary-eyed Eva, that she’s forced to reckon with those few moments of her daughter’s life and the bonds of maternity that are never really broken. At last, we get her point of view.

As necessary as that is, it’s bittersweet that it comes in the film’s final moments, simultaneously intertwined with questions of retribution and justice that could’ve been omitted to better serve a fuller portrait of womanhood and motherhood as it was intended. As it is, Pieces of a Woman is a rather blunted depiction of an endlessly complex subject that deserves much more contemplation. Despite impressive performances, it fails to truly hit that mark.
