Kylie Jenner Breaks COVID Protocol Again to Take Stormi on Family Vacation for Her 3rd Birthday

Tomorrow, on February 1, Kylie Jenner’s daughter, Stormi Webster, will turn 3 years old. Kylie is known to throw a big birthday bash—especially for her daughter. This year, even with a pandemic raging and millions of people still in line for the COVID-19 vaccines, Kylie, Stormi, Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, Dream Kardashian, True Thompson, Penelope Disick, North West, and Chicago West all took off on a girls trip to celebrate Stormi’s birthday in Turks and Caicos.

The island is open for tourism with restrictions right now. California, which recently experienced overwhelming cases—especially in L.A., where the Kardashian-Jenners live—strongly discourages traveling for pleasure.

“It was a girls’ trip to celebrate Stormi’s birthday in one of their favorite places. They stayed at a private villa where they have often stayed in the past,” a source told E!. “They stayed for three nights and had a great vacation spending time at the beach, swimming, taking boat rides and playing in the sand.” The source went on: “Kylie also brought along some of her best friends, including Stassie [Karanikolaou] and Victoria [Villarroel]. They flew on Kylie’s jet and had a great few days celebrating Stormi. They took off and headed home on Friday night to have more birthday celebrations for Stormi in L.A.”

The sisters posted on their Instagram stories to show off the good time they were having.

Khloé posted a photo of her sandy body. “I love my stripes,” she wrote:

The Kardashian-Jenner family has been known to break COVID protocol throughout this pandemic. Kylie has taken a few trips, including a jaunt to Paris last August. For Kim’s 40th birthday last October, she, her friends, and her family all went to a private island to celebrate.

“After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time,” Kim wrote in a Twitter thread then.

Exactly What to Wear to Your First Club Pilates Class, Straight From the Studio’s Instructors

When you’re trying a new workout for the first time, the last thing you want to worry about is your outfit. Your mind is busy enough trying to master the moves — you shouldn’t have to think about your sports bra not being supportive enough or the waistband of your leggings starting to slip. So, before you take your first Reformer-based class at Club Pilates, you’re going to want to check out these must-have workout pieces from the pros.

First, the basics: Kaitlin Snyder, a Club Pilates instructor in Louisville, KY, recommends wearing fitted clothing like leggings, so both you and your instructor can keep a better eye on your form. She also recommends avoiding zippers at all costs. “You spend a majority of the class using the Reformer, often times lying on your back,” Snyder told POPSUGAR. “There’s nothing more uncomfortable than a zipper digging into your lower back for 50 minutes!” Here’s what four Club Pilates instructors wear to stay cool and comfortable.

6 Things That Sparked Joy at the Spring 2021 Couture Shows

Photo by STEPHANE DE SAKUTIN/AFP via Getty Images

As we settle into the winter season and inch closer and closer toward the one-year mark of lockdown — part 1, at least — we’re grateful for any instances of excitement and beauty these days. The Couture Spring 2021 shows in Paris could not have come at a better time, and while Couture Week certainly looks quite different than in past years, designers still found ways to whisk us away from our current everyday lives — via video, lookbooks and more — to deliver some much-needed joy, extravagance and optimism.

Below are six things from the Spring 2021 Couture shows that made us smile.

Kim Jones’ Couture Debut at Fendi

Kim Jones made a splash at his couture debut for Fendi with a cast of famous faces walking the runway. Demi Moore, Kate and Lila Moss, Christy and James Turlington, Adowa and Kesewa Aboah, Cara Delevingne and Naomi Campbell were among the A-listers to strut down the elaborate runway wearing a mix of ornate and tailored pieces. Dangling earrings designed by Fendi family member and the brand’s jewellery creative director, Delfina Delettrez, hung inches past model’s shoulders.

A Horse, Of Course

There’s a new It model in town. White horses seemed to be trending this week, with both Chanel and Dior inviting equine friends to appear in their presentations. Maybe it’s the impact of Shonda Rhime’s show Bridgerton (we can’t deny some the Regency influence in the opulent fashion) or perhaps it’s a reference to the iconic image of Bianca Jagger at Studio 54 on a majestic white horse in the ’70s (who among us isn’t dreaming of being in a packed nightclub right now, after all?). Either way, the horses stole the show(s) this season.

An Alber Elbaz Comeback

Debuting AZ Factory, Alber Elbaz returns from his fashion hiatus and we couldn’t be more thrilled about it.  His new collection focuses on wearability and embraces body positivity with curve-hugging knit dresses in size XXS to XXXXL, and pieces were worn by models of all ages and sizes. The result? Couture that feels fun, inclusive and forward-thinking.

Enchanted Beauty Moments

From the elaborate head pieces at the tarot-inspired Dior show, to the transparent fish skeleton nail extensions (yes, you read that right) at Iris van Herpen by nail artist Eichi Matsunaga, to Pat McGrath’s total commitment to glamour at Valentino courtesy of full faces of gold glitter on some models’ faces (eyelids, lips and all), escapist beauty via enchanted, surreal makeup, hair and nail looks took centre stage at the Couture Spring 2021 shows.

The Merging of Sustainability and Extravagance

Iris van Herpen and Viktor and Rolf incorporated sustainable materials into their collections, embarking on a new definition of quality-wear. Van Herpen worked with Ocean Plastic fabric made from up-cycled marine debris, and Viktor and Rolf repurposed materials from past collections and vintage pieces from their private collections to create this season’s looks. “As if the separate elements that constitute [the outfits] were picked up from a pile haphazardly and put together in haste by a flock of party people who can’t wait to go clubbing, knowing quite well they cannot, as of yet,” wrote the brand on Instagram.

Playing It By Ear

Like the shoulder-dusters seen at Fendi, the Schiaparelli collection made a major statement with larger-than-life earrings. The entirely surreal and sculptural collection showed a variety of enormous earrings that included beaded tassels and thick gold ear-shaped pieces with hoops. One dramatic piece even meshed accessory and garment together, as gold loops below the ears held a cascade of pink fabric making up the model’s gown.

George Clooney Says He Writes Letters to Amal to Keep the Romance Alive in Lockdown

George Clooney loves an old-fashioned romance. During an interview with AARP, he revealed one tradition in particular of which he’s particularly fond: writing letters to his wife, Amal Clooney.

“Even in lockdown, I’ll write a letter and slip it on her desk, or she’ll write a letter and leave it under the pillow,” he said.”I’m a big believer in letters. I have letters from Paul Newman, Walter Cronkite, Gregory Peck. I have them framed. I put them in the house. If it were a text, it would feel different. Maybe that’s a generational thing, and maybe it won’t be that way 20 years from now, but for me, somebody sat down and wrote it.”

Clooney told the publication that both he and his wife love a good handwritten letter and have even taken to writing them to their twins, Ella and Alexander, who will turn 4 this year. Every year, the Clooneys go away for a weekend—just the two of them—and leave their kids behind. But before they take off, they always write each child a letter with the date on it.

Ella and Alexander were born in June of 2017, the month following their dad’s 56th birthday. He candidly spoke to AARP about being an older father (and why he chose traditional names for his children): “I didn’t want, like, weird-ass names for our kids,” he said. “They’re already going to have enough trouble. It’s hard being the son of somebody famous and successful. Paul Newman’s son killed himself. Gregory Peck’s son killed himself. Bing Crosby had two sons kill themselves. I have an advantage because I’m so much older that by the time my son would feel competitive, I’ll literally be gumming bread.”

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning in November, Clooney revealed that he and his wife hadn’t always talked about wanting kids. He added that before their wedding in 2014, marriage hadn’t been an ongoing conversation for them either.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

“We never talked about having kids, and then one day we just said, ‘What do you think?,’ ” he said.”We go to the doctor and you do the ultrasound. They’re like, ‘You got a baby boy!’ and I was like, ‘Baby boy, fantastic!’ And they go, ‘And you got another one there.’ I was up for one. Again, I’m old. All of a sudden, it’s two. It’s hard to get me to not talk and I just stood there for like 10 minutes just staring at this piece of paper going, ‘What? Two?” He continued, later: “There is no question that having Amal in my life changed everything for me,” he said. “It was the first time that everything that she did and everything about her was infinitely more important than anything about me. And then we had these two knuckleheads. It is very fulfilling and something I wasn’t at all…I didn’t see coming.”

This Doctor Wants You to Avoid Alcohol After You Get Your COVID-19 Vaccine — Here’s Why

Alcohol after the COVID vaccine

Some experts are debating whether you should avoid alcohol before and after you get the COVID-19 vaccine because of how it might impact your immune response. But one doctor we spoke to offered a different reason you might want to skip the drinks around the time of your vaccination: alcohol could increase the likelihood that you have a reaction to the vaccine. Here’s more on that connection.

Can I Drink Alcohol After the COVID Vaccine?

Purvi Parikh, MD, an immunologist and allergist with Allergy & Asthma Network, told POPSUGAR that “alcohol actually lowers your threshold for allergic reactions because it basically causes your blood vessels to expand, or what we call vasodilate, and that causes inflammation in your body.” The result is that “you’re more likely to react,” she added.

Though an arm rash from the Moderna vaccine specifically is said to be harmless and normal — and is short-term — alcohol might exacerbate a reaction. Dr. Parikh recommends avoiding alcohol the day of a vaccine and at least for 24 hours after the vaccine or until any side effects — which could include fever, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, and swollen lymph nodes — subside. And, that’s whether or not you have any known allergies.

“Let’s say in 24 hours you feel back to normal, that’s great. But if you’re having side effects after the vaccine for 48 hours, then I wouldn’t add more fuel to the fire,” Dr. Parikh, who is also a co-investigator on COVID-19 vaccine trials at NYU, noted. She said, too, that she would give the same advice for both doses of the currently-available mRNA vaccines — Pfizer and Moderna — especially since the second dose is reported to lead to greater side effects.

Blanka Kaplan, MD, a specialist in adult and pediatric allergy and immunology from Northwell Health, similarly told WebMD that alcohol could accelerate allergic reactions, and she suggested an even longer timeframe of avoiding alcohol around your vaccination date. “Since we do not yet know enough about the influence of alcohol on allergic reactions to the COVID-19 vaccines, I recommend avoiding drinking alcohol for 24 hours before and after your vaccination,” she said.

Dr. Parikh did note, too, that the severe adverse effects of the vaccine such as anaphylaxis would occur 30 to 60 minutes after receiving the shot. Still, she suggests calling your healthcare provider if you have any signs of an allergic reaction such as rash on your skin — then they can decide the severity of the reaction for themselves. Indication of a more serious response to the vaccine are lightheadedness, difficulty breathing, and vomiting, at which point Dr. Parikh suggests contacting your doctor. Of course, when in doubt, you can contact your doctor about any side effects that might concern you.

Since there’s still much we don’t know about these COVID-19 vaccines, it’s best to err on the side of caution and avoid alcohol around the time of your shot to minimize inflammation and a potential allergic reaction.

POPSUGAR aims to give you the most accurate and up-to-date information about the coronavirus, but details and recommendations about this pandemic may have changed since publication. For the latest information on COVID-19, please check out resources from the WHO, CDC, and local public health departments.

Kamala Harris’ Stepdaughter Ella Emhoff Was Just Signed to IMG Models

Photography via Instagram.com/ellaemhoff

The step-daughter of American Vice President Kamala Harris, Ella Emhoff, has just signed with IMG Models. The 22-year-old New York City-based Parsons student caught the attention of the fashion industry on Inauguration day, where she wore an embellished Miu Miu coat and burgundy dress from American designer Batsheva Hay.

Studying textiles, with a focus on knitwear, Emhoff is an aspiring designer who clearly has a natural knack for fashion. Her Instagram account is filled with her colourful designs, which include striped pants that are perfect for working from home, and crochet checkered bikini tops and pants. Her playful Instagram aesthetic shows her bold fashion sense and creativity. If that wasn’t enough, Emhoff even does her own poke-and-stick tattoos.

Emhoff’s Inauguration Day Miu Miu coat wasn’t her first stand-out look. She arrived in Washington the day before the Inauguration wearing head-to-toe Thom Browne, causing the fashion crowd to buzz.

Emhoff’s Instagram following was hovering around 50,000 prior to the Inauguration earlier this month, and has now climbed well over 300,000 — and counting. As she signs with world-renowned IMG Models, she joins a roster of industry giants like Gigi Hadid, Ashley Graham and Hailey Bieber, as well as fellow Inauguration star, Amanda Gorman, who was also signed to IMG earlier this week. We’ll keep our eyes peels for the much-anticipated modelling debut of both Emhoff and Gorman.

Megan Fox Seemingly Responds to Rumors That She’s Engaged to Machine Gun Kelly

Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox sparked engagement rumors this week when a new photo of Fox captured a ring on a certain finger. The couple hasn’t confirmed their engagement, but on Friday, Fox seemed to have a response of her own.

She posted a photo of her left hand with a ring that reads “Fuck you.” It appears to be a response to the circulating rumors.

This seems to say it all, though Fox didn’t comment further.

She and Machine Gun Kelly (Colson Baker) met in March of last year, on the set of the indie thriller Midnight In The Switchgrass. They’ve been pretty open about their relationship over the past year; Fox even spoke out about her boyfriend in NYLON.

“I looked into his eyes [and] I felt the most pristine, most gentle, most pure spirit,” she said. “My heart shattered immediately and I just knew that I was fucked.”

At the end of 2020, a source close to MGK told Entertainment Tonight that the artist does think about his future with Fox.

“MGK and Megan make each other laugh and that’s a big thing for Megan. They keep each other smiling,” the source said. “MGK totally sees marriage in his future with Megan and friends could 100 percent see them getting engaged within the next year.” The source adds however, that “Megan doesn’t think about getting engaged [or] married and she doesn’t put a timeline in place and it’s not something that really crosses her mind.”

MGK will be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live tonight; John Krasinksi will host.

I’m a Vegetarian Who Doesn’t Love Veggies — Here’s How I Sneak Nutrients Into My Diet

I’ve been a vegetarian for years, and it’s not because I adore nuts and leafy greens — in fact, pizza and donuts are among my favorite foods. Fortunately, there are lots of ways to get the nutrients your body needs. Since I stopped eating meat in 2016, I’ve learned how to sneak nutrition into meals and snacks I genuinely enjoy, as well as how to make vegetables yummier, and it’s allowed me to eat well without sacrificing taste.

From eating soups that are chock-full of veggies to blending smoothies with heaping spoonfuls of nut butter to drinking vitamin-packed teas, there are lots of delicious, simple ways I lovingly trick myself into eating healthy. Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, keto, Paleo, or simply trying to eat healthier, you might benefit from my tips for adding more nutrients to your diet as well — because eating healthy doesn’t have to equal eating steamed veggies at every meal (unless you’re into that).

Kate Middleton Says She’s ‘Become a Hairdresser’ Much to Her ‘Children’s Horror’ During the Pandemic

Kate Middleton and Prince William have been spending the pandemic with their children at their Norfolk estate, Anmer Hall. In the past, Kate has spoken out about the challenges of being a parent to three young children in the middle of a global crisis. This week, during a video call with other parents, she revealed one more relatable pandemic parenting challenge.

“I’ve become a hairdresser this lockdown, much to my children’s horror, sitting up cutting hair,” she said, laughing.

The three other parents on the call all have children who attend school at Roe Green Junior School in Brent, England. Along with Kate, they participated in some exercises to describe what it’s like to parent right now. Each of the parents had to describe this time in one word. Kate chose “exhausting.”

“I know how challenging it is juggling work, home life, school life and everything else that you as parents are doing, so really well done,” she said, referencing the fact that the U.K. is now on its third national lockdown since the pandemic began. “Fingers crossed, let’s hope for the positivity as you’ve all been saying. Make sure everyone looks after themselves—it’s very hard to prioritize but it’s definitely needed now more than ever.”

During an interview for During an interview for the “5 Big Questions on the Under Fives” last November, Kate also opened up about yet another very common toddler-parent struggle: tantrums. Someone on the call asked the mom of three how she handles “toddler tantrums, especially with multiple children.”

Her answer? “Yes, that’s a hard one. I’d also like to ask the experts myself!”

Amandine Sol Botanicals Dropped Its Sophomore Product, Dew Dream

We love savvy time-saving beauty heroes that double up (or better yet, triple up) on function. On Monday, Toronto-based all-natural skincare line Amandine Sol Botanicals dropped its second product, Dew Dream, a plant-powered essence-meets-toner-meets-serum that works to sooth, strengthen and hydrate the skin while also sloughing away dead skin cells. Star ingredients, many of which are sourced from founder Amandine Sol Azran’s family farm in Ontario, include anti-inflammatory calendula, chamomile and rose to calm the skin, free-radical fighting olive leaf, gingko bilboa and tea extracts to boost skin’s barrier, and a cocktail of honey, elderflower and jasmine to amp up skin’s glow. The formula is also infused with plumping hyaluronic acid that penetrates deeply to quench a water-depleted complexion. Another highlight? Dew Dream is gentle enough to be used on reactive skin types yet potent enough to deliver some line-smoothing magic on mature skin, too.

Supergoop!’s Glowscreen SPF Landed at Sephora.ca

Courtesy of Supergoop!

We could easily go on and on about how important sunscreen is — year-round. When beloved Texas-based clean suncare brand Supergoop! landed at Sephora Canada last May with four of its hero products, it was a big deal, especially considering Supergoop!’s steady streak as the beauty retailer’s best-selling sunscreen brand in the U.S. Now, Canadian shoppers can officially get their hands on Supergoop!’s cult-favourite Glowscreen SPF 40 ($48), a lightweight, pearlescent formula that goes far beyond your basic UV protection. Made with hyaluronic acid, Vitamin B5, sea lavender and cocoa peptides, the illuminating formula that’s free of pore-clogging ingredients also hydrates the skin and defends it against blue light while simultaneously acting as a makeup-gripping primer to boot. Another big bonus: Glowscreen can also be used as a highlighter wherever you’re wanting an extra dose of radiance.

Filorga Expanded Its Anti-Aging Global-Repair Range

Supercharged with hard-working ceramides, omegas and vitamins, anti-aging French skincare brand Filorga’s Global-Repair range, which launched last year, is all about tackling common sings of aging: dullness, loss of firmness and volume, lines and wrinkles, as well as dark spots. This week, the brand expanded the range’s luxe facial moisturizer and serum line-up to include two additional SKUs for a thorough skincare regimen. First there’s the sesame seed extract-spiked Global-Repair Eyes & Lips ($119), which was made not only to target dark circles, under eye puffiness and crow’s feet, but also to be used on the lips to treat fine vertical lines and crevices. Next up: the Global-Repair Essence ($99), which is infused with brown seaweed extract and formulated to stimulate lipid production in the skin, natural fats that are crucial to maintaining the strength of the skin’s protective barrier.

WandaVision Season 2: Everything We Know

The wild world of WandaVision has officially been unveiled on Disney+. Starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as newlyweds Wanda Maximoff and Vision, the series transports viewers to a different era with each episode. The first was filmed in front of a live studio audience in an homage to the ‘50s. Episode 2 shifts to the ’60s and the third episode takes place in the ’70s, complete with Brady Bunch references. Each Friday, a new spell-binding installment drops, fueling speculation about a potential second season.

“The show is like a blank slate for them,” Olsen tells ELLE.com of the lead superheroes. “Wanda and Vision’s journey to this point is a story of pure, innocent love and deep connection with another person. It was also very traumatizing. Tragedy has always been their story. In our show, we kind of wipe that clean and start fresh.” While Olsen can’t weigh in on a season 2 renewal yet, she did tease: “The reason it’s a sitcom shows itself later in the show. When Kevin [Feige] told me, it didn’t feel so bizarre. It felt like a great way to start our story.”

Ahead, everything we know about a second season from director Matt Shakman (Succession, The Great) and writer Jac Schaeffer (Captain Marvel, Black Widow), including which MCU film Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will appear in next.

This content is imported from {embed-name}. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

According to Olsen, a second season of WandaVision is not out of the question.

When asked directly about season 2 by Collider, Olsen said, “It could [have a second season].” It’s already been confirmed that Olsen will return as the Scarlet Witch in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a film that directly ties to WandaVision. As for what Bettany’s teased about the finale of season 1? “Episode by episode, week by week, Vision begins to really realize something is not right about this,” he told Collider. “Something is not right about this town. And then the MCU that we all collide [sic] in the most epic of endings.”

Some Disney+ shows will only be one season.

Previously, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said that some MCU shows on Disney+ (four of which will debut in 2021) will only last a single season, while others will go on for multiple seasons and/or connect to Marvel films. “It will vary,” Feige told Variety. “There are some shows that have been built to further expand our storytelling and then go into features. We’ve already announced Lizzie Olsen being a part of Doctor Strange 2. We’ve announced Teyonah Parris being part of Captain Marvel 2. There are some shows that, while always interconnected, are being built with multiple seasons in mind.”

As episodes debut, new theories about season 2 are emerging.

The first four installments of WandaVision have already dropped, leading to buzz about which direction the season could go in. At the end of the third episode, Wanda gives birth to twins Billy and Tommy, prompting speculation about whether the pair will grow up to be Young Avengers Wiccan and Speed from the comics.

Another interesting theory: that curious neighbor Agnes (Hahn) is actually Agatha Harkness, who is both an antagonist and mystical guide for Wanda in the comics. The dynamic between Agnes and Wanda could be explored further in a second season.

It’s unclear which cast members could return.

While the show continues to air, it’s impossible to know the final fates of WandaVision‘s cast. It’s likely that Olsen and Bettany would return as the titular superheroes. In the first season, they’re joined by Parris as Monica Rambeau/Geraldine, Hahn as Agnes, Kat Dennings as Dr. Darcy Lewis, and Randall Park as FBI agent Jimmy Woo.

A premiere date for WandaVision season 2 is also TBD.

As continuation of WandaVision has yet to be confirmed, there’s no official release date. However, with the pandemic delaying productions and a litany of other Marvel titles set to debut, it’s unlikely season 2 would bow before late 2022.

How Pregnancy Loss Taught Me to Be More Forgiving of My Body

tmp_soVnIA_a0d0ab7e89b41482_ross-sneddon--_GA1e-813o-unsplash.jpg

I suffered a miscarriage in my first trimester and that loss has shaped and changed who I am at my core. So much of who I was before this loss is unrecognizable to me, and I’m realizing that I can’t go back to the “before” version of myself no matter how hard I try. There are parts of my identity that I have lost, and pieces that I’ve gained through all of the good and bad of this experience.

Before I got pregnant, my relationship with my body was a bit touch and go. I’ve battled an eating disorder since my early teen years, and although I was in a pretty good place at the time I saw that first positive result, I was still critical of the way I looked at times. The places where I carry most of my weight have been heavily scrutinized by my ED voice for as long as I can remember, and even in good stages of recovery, I’d find myself making a mental list of all of the things I thought I should change. As a person who’s spent the majority of her life keeping her body under close watch, it’s safe to say I was a bit thrown by the whole pregnancy thing.

My pregnancy was unexpected, and the lack of control I felt was overwhelming, as I’m known for being quite the planner. I was frightened by many things, but thinking about the ways in which my body would expand and change scared me because I felt so unprepared. Then it just happened, and my body changed nearly overnight. My breasts swelled and reached a size I’d never known, and I was so bloated that I looked much farther along than I was. Even beyond the physical changes, it was evident that my body was working hard to try to support this developing baby inside of me. The nausea and exhaustion urged me to rest and take it easy, which is something that’s difficult for me to do in the face of change. I found myself both amazed and terrified by these wild things my body was going through. The experience helped me realize that my body knew how it needed to change and adapt, and that I should stop trying so desperately to run the show all the time.

I’m working to forgive my body for this loss, and through this process, I’m also trying to make amends for the many years I spent hating its curves and softness.

Despite my body’s best efforts, all of these preparations couldn’t sustain my pregnancy, and I miscarried without ever hearing my baby’s heartbeat. I still struggle with feelings of failure and guilt, and the endless stream of what ifs, but when it comes down to it, I know that my body was doing everything it possibly could to make itself a safe home for my child. I’m working to forgive my body for this loss, and through this process, I’m also trying to make amends for the many years I spent hating its curves and softness prior to my pregnancy.

It took time for my hormones to level out and for my body to return to some semblance of normal, but even then, my body showed me that it knew what had happened and what it had to do to begin to heal. For a while, I felt so detached from my physical self and had no desire to pay attention to it at all. I self-soothed with comfort foods and long days spent in bed and tried to forget about my body entirely. It took some time to pull out of this stage of grief that felt so deep that I couldn’t touch the bottom without my head going under, too. But as I began to heal and accept the loss, that feeling of indifference toward my body began to slowly shift towards understanding.

Integrating movement back into my life is one thing that has helped me both process my grief and feel at home in my body again. It’s a delicate balance, because I don’t want to revert to over-exercising as a coping mechanism, but in small doses, exercise has always given me an appreciation for my body and all that it can do. I’ve started practicing yoga again, and I try to carve out as much time as possible to spend outdoors hiking, walking, or swimming in the ocean.

I’ve also started learning more about my fertility by reading books on how to best plan for starting a family in the future. Something about understanding the science of conception and the very complex list of things that have to go perfectly for a person to become (and stay) pregnant has eased my guilt and helped my overthinking brain immensely. I’ve picked up some nuggets of wisdom through my reading that I’ve implemented as a form of self-care, like taking a prenatal every day, along with a select few supplements that will prepare my body to carry children in the future.

I’ve spent so much of my life agonizing over the figure I saw in the mirror — trying to manipulate, shrink, and disguise it — and after this loss, I found myself starting to let go. I’ve realized it’s not worth it to fight this war against myself anymore. It’s more than clear to me now that this body of mine knows so much more than I do about what it needs and wants and how it has to change. I’m realizing it’s my job to shut up and listen, and that all I can do is try my best to keep my body healthy through all seasons of life.

This experience has been the toughest thing I’ve had to endure so far in my life, but a learning experience nonetheless. The lessons that this loss has taught me were hard to learn, but above all, it’s taught me that caring for my body is, and always should have been, at the top of my priority list.

Bling Empire Season 2: Everything We Know

If Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Crazy Rich Asians, and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills had an eight-episode love child, it would be Netflix’s Bling Empire. The series, which premiered on January 15, follows the lives of ultra-wealthy Asians living in Los Angeles. There are extravagant parties, blinding jewels, and enough mentions of Dior to make your head spin.

Created by KUWTK producer Jeff Jenkins, the show introduces a cast of couture-wearing characters: There’s Christine Chiu, wife of a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon and mother to a toddler who wears designer clothing and goes by “Baby G.” Her nemesis is Anna Shay, a socialite and defense weapons heiress who prefers her privacy. Then there’s model/actor and new Angeleno Kevin Kreider, real estate mogul Kane Lim, DJ Kim Lee, denim heiress Cherie Chan, film producer Kelly Mi Li, and influencer Jamie Xie.

For some, Bling Empire has provided an escape from the stark realities of the world. For others, it’s a reminder of the wealth disparity that’s been intensified by a global pandemic. There’s no official word on a second season yet, though, Jenkins told Town & Country he’s more than up for the challenge. “We just celebrated 14 years of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. I would love to take this cast even further.”

Ahead, everything we know about a potential second season, straight from the cast members themselves.

The cast wants to return for more lavish adventures.

While Netflix hasn’t confirmed a second season, the larger-than-life characters have already voiced their excitement about returning. “If you thought I dropped a big bomb in season 1, then you have no idea,” Christine teased to OprahMag.com, adding that her confession would be “timely in our climate.” Christine also suggested to WWD that she’d “maybe” launch a new beauty line in “the second season.”

As for Kevin, he told Entertainment Tonight that he envisioned more travel, not less, in season 2. “I’d like to go to South Korea!” he said, adding that he’d like to bring the whole cast along. “Personally, I think traveling is going to be a huge thing.” Kim agreed: “You know, we tried to travel for the first season, but obviously with time constraints and stuff like that, we couldn’t. I would actually like to fly the whole cast to Singapore show them what Singapore truly is.”

Netflix

Season 1 left us with several burning questions.

Just as the cast of Bling Empire covets high-end designer labels and opulent homes, viewers crave answers to the season’s biggest conflicts. For starters, Kelly ends the season back at her on-again, off-again boyfriend Andrew’s home after ton of ups and downs. (The couple is reportedly still together in real life, although Kane tells ET, “Maybe season 2, we’ll see another breakup.”)

Then there’s Kim, whose season-long search for her biological father ends with a devastating conclusion. However, she does seem to find a possible connection with Kevin at Cherie Chan’s 100 Day party. As for Christine, only time will tell if she and her husband Dr. Gabriel welcome a second child.

There’s no release date yet.

In short: without a confirmed second season, there’s also no premiere date. There are also widespread production delays due to the ongoing pandemic, particularly in Los Angeles, where the series is set. Viewers could be several years away from getting a Bling Empire season 2. Until then, we’ll always have Anna Shay’s Instagram.

We Are: The Brooklyn Saints: Is Coach Gawuala Still With the Saints? Here’s What He Told Us

It’s physically impossible to choose a favorite cast member from We Are: The Brooklyn Saints, but if we had to, Coach Gawuala would be right up there. He’s the beating heart of the Saints’ nine-and-under football team, and you can see it every time he’s on screen, leading cheers, coaching the boys through losses, and inspiring them to wins. His bond with the players is something you can feel even through the screen.

That’s what made it so heartbreaking when, in the fourth and final episode, we learned that Coach Gawuala’s new job might make it impossible for him to coach the Saints next season. When the team walked off the field for the last time, having lost at the national championship tournament in Florida, we weren’t sure if Coach Gawuala would ever be on the sidelines with them again.

We won’t keep you in suspense any longer: Coach Gawuala is officially back with the Brooklyn Saints — and he still has his job at the hospital, too. “It was a decision sitting heavy on me for a while,” Coach Gawuala told POPSUGAR. “I don’t know how it happened, but I guess the man up above saw this was my calling and He wanted me to be back on that fence, so I worked hard and He made His miracle happen for me to come back.”

That uncertainty is what made the final loss of the season even more painful; Coach Gawuala called it “the worst feeling.” Talking to the team afterward, though, he tried to put his own emotions aside. “Everything we do, we take heartaches and pain,” Coach Gawuala remembered telling them. “We just gotta learn lessons from it. We can’t just let it bring us down because that’s not going to get us nowhere.”

Another painful moment in the series came during episode two, when Coach Vick — another nine-and-under coach and the father of nine-year-old quarterback Delontai, aka D-Lo — was arrested for an unpaid ticket. The police arrested him before practice at the football field, in full view of the team and his son. “To see D-Lo have to witness what Vick was going through, that really crushed my heart,” Coach Gawuala said. “But at the end of the day, it’s reality. This is what we go through every day.” To start practice afterwards wasn’t easy for the coaches or the team. “I tried my best to talk about it,” Coach Gawuala said. “I told the kids, it’s a lesson learned. We just got to go forward from it.”

Of course, as much as Coach Gawuala is a father to the kids, teaching them hard lessons and helping them deal with disappointment, he’s also their official hype man. His cheers and slogans bring the kids together and get them pumped up for every game. “When it comes to these kids, I have to celebrate for them,” he explained.

“I don’t see anything that can stop us from being family.”

In one chant, Coach Gawuala yells, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” And the team responds, “You already know!” Unexplained in the series, the cheer goes back to the fact that the Brooklyn Saints are more a family than a football program, Coach Gawuala explained. “When I talk to the kids, they’re brothers,” he said. “That’s not your teammate, that’s your brother. From the beginning of the game to the end of the game, we going to fight.” It’s a call to push forward together, from kickoff to the game’s final whistle.

And no, not even the pandemic could mess with the Saints’ connection, even if it did upend their 2020 season. They’re still in touch and checking in on each other, Coach Gawuala said, even if they can’t be on the field together. “Me and the kids, we family for life,” he said. “I don’t see anything that can stop us from being family.”

Beautiful-Hair-Haver Priyanka Chopra Jonas Is Launching a Haircare Line

Let’s talk about Priyanka Chopra’s hair for a moment. It’s shiny, luxurious, healthy—and coming to a Target near you. The actress is entering the beauty world with Anomaly Haircare, a sustainable and accessible line of hair products designed for every day use.

Launching February 1, the collection features a deep conditioning mask, dry shampoo, and three different types of shampoo and conditioner. And what else? It’s good for the environment—each bottle is made from plastic pollution sourced from landfills and oceans. “I was just thinking about what would be an every day easy regiment for every person,” she tells ELLE.com. “I’m not someone who’s a professional with haircare, I let the professionals do that, but this is everyday haircare that will give you the best feeling.”

Chopra claims she’s no pro (I beg to differ), but she does have great hair and a fresh set of bangs, which leads me to a very important question: Should I get bangs too? “Well, see, I had a reason [to get bangs],” she says with a laugh. “I thought that for the role that I was playing in my new movie, Text For You, bangs worked for her character.”

But the actress isn’t telling me no. “Hair grows back!” she reassures. “That’s how I feel. You should never ‘what if’ in your life. If you feel like you want bangs, do it, just don’t cut them yourself. Get a professional to do it. But you know what girl? You have one life, live it.”

Ahead, Chopra talks about her new haircare line, favorite quarantine binge-watches, and the trick for the perfect fringe.

What inspired you to create a hair care line?

I decided I wanted to do a beauty line, but I didn’t know what it would be until I realized what the gap in the market was. You’ve seen a lot of skincare be sustainable, clean, vegan, cruelty-free, but you haven’t really seen that in hair care much. I wanted superior products, no parabens, and sulfates, but super clean.

When I was a teenager, I had really long fake hair and I wanted to get amazing shampoos for myself and all of them were way too expensive. [Anomaly] is like six bucks for each product, because we spent so little on our packaging. It’s all recycled trash, so you can take the bottle and recycle it again. Everyone should have access to great hair and it shouldn’t cost us the earth.

Why did you choose the name Anomaly?

The definition of anomaly is something that deviates from what’s standard, normal, what’s expected. We’re all anomalies and the brand celebrates our differences. It empowers people to make beautiful choices without killing the earth. I truly believe that each one of us is very unique. It’s more than just hair, it’s our identities.

    What’s your haircare routine?

I need a great hair mask. I do that once or twice a week when I have a little bit of time to have a longer shower. The Gentle Shampoo really helps me wash my hair every day because I’m in the gym and I’m working out. I use the Hydrating Shampoo because I have thick hair and it gets really dry with treatments and I’m always in the glam chair. And then the third one, the Clarifying Shampoo is my favorite. It has charcoal and eucalyptus, so it really gives you a deep cleanse.

Do you have any styling tips for people with bangs?

I don’t blow dry them with a brush in everyday life. I just take a blow dryer like you’re in a car and you put the window down. I blow dry from the right and from the left and just sort of let it air dry. It takes its natural form and just falls really naturally and beautifully, almost windswept.

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

What has your beauty routine been like in quarantine?

I’m not usually wearing makeup. I do like a little bit of a lip stain, I wear this Clinique lip pencil, which is sort of like a lip balm, but with a little tint. So I use that for my lips and my cheeks if I am feeling adventurous. And if it’s for my zooms, I’ll wear mascara, blush, maybe do a little makeup because I’m usually doing interviews and stuff, which are on TV. But if I’m at home, I usually just wear a tinted lip balm with lots of moisturizers and feel really clean and fresh.

What have you been watching and listening to?

I have discovered lofi hip hop! When I’m reading my scripts, I like having some lofi hip hop playing in the back. I watched this documentary called Assassins, which was really interesting, and one called The Dissident, which was great. I watched The Undoing. And Bridgerton!

Tier’s Latest Collection Is the Black Joy We Need Right Now

If there’s one word that captures the spirit of New York City-based brand Tier, it’s family. Drawn together by their Brooklyn roots, the Tier trio—Nigeria Ealey, Esaïe Jean-Simon, and Victor James—are longtime friends who evolved their brand from word-of-mouth startup to celebrity favorite in six years. But following a long period of divisiveness that took root in our country and an ongoing pandemic that isolated us from loved ones, the term resonates more deeply than usual this year.

Tier’s newest collection offers a palate cleanse: If you could bottle Black joy and splatter it on a series of knitted sweaters, sweatpants, dresses, and jackets, it would be the brand’s Project 3: Joy to the World. Tier collaborated with Brooklyn-based Haitian artist Pierre Jean-Baptiste of P Studios on pieces that “evoke the true joys and triumphs of the Black experience.”

Their labor of love looks like a figure hugging an open Johnny Pump (or fire hydrant) to recall warm New York City days. “Our Johnny Pump garments are a constant reminder of New York summer months in the neighborhoods where we’re raised—we didn’t have pools, but we still created experiences out of the elements around us,” Jean-Baptiste said. Other standouts include an illustration of two men pledging allegiance to the Pan-African flag and a bunch of hands reaching for the “Black dollar”—all celebrating “our cultural influence and contributions to the world through the expression of Black Joy, community, currency, beauty, and power,” Ealey says.

“2020 was a reminder for us that life is very unpredictable,” Ealey says, referencing the multiple pandemics Black people face, including COVID-19 and racial injustices. “The inspiration for this project came from the rage and helplessness of our people—though we truly have a sense of hopefulness that better times are coming soon. This project defines the real and positive perspective of the Black experience.”

8 Canadian Vintage Home Decor Shops That Can Breathe Life Into Your Space

For spaces in need of a refresh, look no further than quirky vintage homeware sold by Canadian collectors.

Is there anything more soothing than leisurely browsing the homeware section of an out-of-town Value Village or combing through a newly discovered antique shop? And while we could certainly all use a soothing hobby these days, how is the once-tranquil activity of vintage home decor shopping even possible during a time when in-store browsing feels like a distant memory?

Online vintage home decor shopping is surprisingly similar to the IRL version — when you’re shopping at the right spots, says Nora Voon, the award-winning designer and founder of Noda Designs. The avid vintage collector typically goes antiquing every few weeks, and while the tactile element is currently missing, the best online shops address this discrepancy with detailed photos and thorough descriptions. Pro sellers will also meticulously note an object’s irregularities, which Voon encourages shoppers not to be dissuaded by. “Imperfections aren’t necessarily flaws,” she says. “They could just be signs that the object was not machine-made, and therefore more likely to be a one-of-a-kind antique.”

If your surroundings are feeling particularly dull these days, vintage furnishings can add a welcome dose of charm and humour to your home. Peruse the eight sellers below (bonus: they’re all Canadian) to discover special pieces filled with character that are sure to uplift your space — and fill the thrifting void in your heart.

    A Door in Time

A throw pillow by Etsy shop Door In Time

A Door in Time is a Toronto-based boutique specializing in cottagecore goods spanning the twentieth century. Endearing homeware with imagery of fruits and vegetables, flowers and farm animals, and quaint country life are plentiful, including a darling pair of squash-shaped soup bowls and an elegant swan teapot. Shoppers can browse by the style of their choosing— “The Ranch,” for example, features Western-themed treasures like miniature cowboy boot planters. The online shop also offers a unique selection of vintage folk art pieces from around the world, ranging from Denmark to Mexico.

    Carter & Wainwright

A vintage pottery piece from Carter&Wainwright

Carter & Wainwright offers an expansive selection of over a thousand vintage items and collectables. The shop’s operation out of Prince Edward Island is echoed in its maritime-themed keepsakes, some of which include a nautical Norman Rockwell mug and a brass seashell trinket dish. The ceramics collection is another highlight, featuring a ‘40s-era porcelain lady’s head planter (which can also be used as a makeup brush holder) and a sweet dimpled blue vase made by PEI’s own Darlington Pottery in the 1980s.

According to Voon, vintage pottery can add an interesting textural element to modern decor. “If your interior is very contemporary and has a minimalist vibe, pairing old ceramic or porcelain objects can be really striking,” she says.

    Opaline Atelier

Glassware from vintage shop Opaline Atelier

Montreal glassmakers Opaline Atelier stock beautiful antiques in addition to selling their own works of art and custom glassware. The boutique’s vintage collection is neatly curated and features ultra-feminine dishware and platters perfect for hosting or displaying jewelry. Colour is a major focus in the shop’s antique offerings, with an eye-catching assortment of coloured glass items that vary from opalescent amber and iridescent orange to sky blue and vibrant green. Pieces date back as far as the 1930s and include delightful relics from the 1950s, including the butterfly “party set” by the Jeanette Glass Company.

    Fifth Avenue Vintage Co

An oil painting from Fifth Avenue Vintage Co.

Fifth Avenue Vintage Co is a purveyor of light-hearted retro homeware. The Saskatoon-based shop has an eye for vibrant patterns and playful characters, which adorn everything from throws and pillows to kitchenware and board games. The knick knacks section features a wide array of produce and animal-themed salt and pepper shakers, and the wall decor pieces are delightfully kitsch, ranging from needlepoint bird portraits to a moody blue velvet oil painting from the ‘70s.

Integrating an unusual art piece into your home decor can dramatically liven up a space. “Art is a way to not take things too seriously,” shares Voon. “I love expressing my quirkiness through art.”

    Montreal Flea Market

A lamp from Montreal Flea Market

Montreal Flea Market boasts an eccentric variety of home goods with a wide selection of statement clocks, novelty telephones, and spectacular light fixtures. The online shop is the perfect place to find cheeky home decor such as a ‘70s-era bowling-themed lamp, 1950s chalkware mounted fish, and a cat-shaped phone from the ‘80s. There are many retro-futuristic objects to choose from as well, including The Jetsons-esque chrome pieces like a Blessing tulip clock and a statuesque five-bulb table lamp.

    Pieces Kept

An art book from Pieces Kept

Pieces Kept is based in Vancouver and offers a lovely selection of vintage home furnishings, including an impressive collection of art and coffee table books. Shoppers can find mint condition art books on Picasso, pottery, and Ikebana, as well as 1930s-era nature resources like Albert Dixon Simmons’s Wing Shots, which showcases birds in flight. Items in this store are impeccably photographed with striking minimalism, allowing the material of each object to shine, such as the glossy black finish on a porcelain Ikebana vase or the textured “Fat Lava” glaze on mid-century ceramics.

    EpiCurio Collectables

    A vintage toy from EpiCurio

Halifax’s EpiCurio Collectables is a nostalgia-driven store that sells rare and remarkable toys from numerous decades. Being collectors first and foremost themselves, the owners of EpiCurio Collectables also restore their finds, so shoppers are able to reunite with childhood mementos in tip-top shape, including Care Bears, Polly Pocket, Strawberry Shortcake, and Tamagotchi. The shop’s selection of vintage stationary (including beloved Sandylion stickers), Mickey Mouse valentines, and Edward Mobley rubber squeak toys are sure to add levity to any interior.

Voon has several good-humoured accompaniments of her own. “I have an owl [figurine] perching on my bar cabinet in my London flat,” she says. “I named him Oscar and he’s a great companion if I ever need a friend.”

    Handpicked Artifacts

    Candle holders from Handpicked Artifacts

Handpicked Artifacts is a Guelph-based shop committed to helping the environment through the resale of vintage home goods. The online store offers an intriguing selection of art, embroidery, ceramics and kitchenware, like a green-glazed coffee pot made in Collingwood circa 1953 and an antique cupid cake mold by Birkmann. The candlestick holder collection is especially noteworthy, with an assortment of styles ranging from miniature brass trumpets to whimsical blue Fenton glass boots.

If you’re new to adding antique homeware to your space, Voon suggests starting small. “The key is to not overdo it,” she shares. “I find that in modern interiors, a few pieces of vintage items can really add personality and depth.” Whether you opt for a little vintage or a lot, Voon maintains that “good design comes in many forms.”

Rep. Cori Bush Says She’s Moving Her Office to Get Away From Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene

Rep. Cori Bush, the newly-elected Democrat from Missouri, announced on Friday that she is moving offices after a heated hallway exchange with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a freshman Republican from Georgia.

In a tweet, Bush claimed a “maskless” Greene “berated” her in a hallway after “target[ing]” her and others on social media.” Bush says she is relocating in order to protect her own safety, as well as the safety of her staff.

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

According to government websites for both congresswomen, their offices are located on the same floor of the Longworth House Office Building, which houses 251 congressional suites.

Greene, who is known for her endorsement of QAnon conspiracy theories and dangerous rhetoric on social media (including calling for the execution of Democrats on Facebook), responded to Bush’s accusations with a tweet of her own, writing: “She is lying to you. She berated me.” Greene also posted a video with the tweet that shows her walking indoors with her mask pulled down, calling Bush a “hypocrite,” and claiming she has “the receipts.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted her support for Bush, writing that GOP leader Kevin McCarthy “has a responsibility to ensure his members do not harm others.”

“He is losing control of his caucus & allowing these threats to go unchecked, while looking the other way as members like @CoriBush feel so unsafe that she must move offices just 3 weeks into her 1st term,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote, adding that moving offices is “a huge and disruptive effort.”

“Honestly,” Ocasio-Cortez added on Twitter, “it shouldn’t even be Rep. Bush that has to move and endure all this, it should be Greene – she is the one that posing a threat to others around her.”

I Ate Sweet Potatoes Every Day For 1 Month to See How It Affected My Energy, Digestion, and Weight

People are so scared of carbs! I understand that fueling yourself with cookies and bagels won’t make you feel awesome, but eating unprocessed, complex carbs is essential for your body’s normal functioning, and can actually help with weight loss, explained registered dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition. Healthy foods such as fruit, oats, rice, beans, and potatoes offer your body the energy and fiber you need to feel satiated, and the carbs your body needs to make the glucose it uses for fuel.

I got swept up by the low-carb wave too, and I tried eating this way to lose weight, but I never felt satisfied. I was tired during the day, fatigued quickly during workouts, my digestion suffered, my sugar cravings were insatiable, and I just ended up bingeing. I decided to do an experiment eating complex carbs every day for one month, specifically sweet potatoes (because I love them!). I ate three varieties: orange, purple, and my absolute fave, the Japanese sweet potato which has yellow flesh once it’s cooked. Here’s how eating sweet potatoes every day affected my energy levels, my satiety and sugar cravings, my digestion, and my weight.

Wash Your Face Mask in Fancy Laundry Detergent and Really Start Living

    doing the laundry

    Tom Kelley ArchiveGetty Images

It’s a particularly COVID-19 era problem: Putting on a cloth face mask (reusable, please!) right before your journey outside only to realize, well, it doesn’t smell that great.

Newsflash: You should be washing your masks after each wear. But instead of turning to good old utilitarian laundry detergent for what just ends up being another household chore, bring a little joy into your life by treating yourself to some luxury laundry detergent.

The logic: You, the wearer of said mask, are breathing in its scent all day. So why not level up your experience by adding a luxury fragrance to your little personal space bubble?

The options of thriving while masking are endless. You can go the therapeutic route a la the new Laundress x Aromatherapy Associates collab inspired by forest bathing. Or maybe, fully flush out your signature scent story with Le Labo’s Santal 33 or Rose 31 detergents? Try something tropical with Love Home & Planet’s affordable concentrate, or go indie with Cali-chic Dedcool’s biodegradable detergent.

And while fancy detergent can be on the pricer side, by hand-washing in a mixing bowl, you’re typically only using about a capful at a time, which means the bottle will last for about 50 to 60 rounds. Regardless of which you choose, your mask game will be next level.

When the world was peak scary at the start of the pandemic, I started washing my sheets with Le Labo detergent as a cozy treat. One night, while I was snuggled up with my cat watching Grey’s Anatomy for the first time and slowly inhaling the glory that is Santal 33, it hit me—my masks could smell this good, too.

The next morning I collected all the masks in my house (my personal favorites are the Clare V. masks for running errands and Jill & Ally for when I just need to pop one on quickly to run downstairs), rolled up my sleeves, and got to work.

Almost a year into this habit, here are my washing tips:

    • For the masks to be clean, you must use hot water. First, I pre-soak my masks for about five minutes in super-hot water, drain them, then make them a nice little bubble bath with my detergent and let them hang out for at least 15 minutes. Then I scrub each for a few minutes, rinse, and hang!
    • Hand washing can be tricky. Make sure the water runs completely bubble-free when you’ve finished washing (leftover detergent could irritate your skin!).
    • I don’t own an iron, so the way I dry my masks is essential. Set them out on hangers to air dry (I prefer to do it in the shower in case there’s some residual water) overnight—I’ve also noticed it helps the fabric’s fragrance set.
    • Spot treat if you’ve got a makeup mark. I like to carry the Tide to Go Wipes to stop the stain as soon as I see it, or let this Stain Solution permeate for a few minutes pre-wash.
    • If you have sensitive skin, be careful and consult your dermatologist before trying this technique.

And below, a few face masks that pair perfectly with the fanciest of detergents:

How Ocean Waste Found Its Way to a Couture Runway

      style points

Style Points is a weekly column about how fashion intersects with the wider world.

The designer Iris van Herpen recently became fascinated by what scientists call the “wood wide web,” the communication network used by fungi to send messages between plants—think of it as nature’s answer to the Internet. After stumbling across Entangled Life, a book by the plant scientist Merlin Sheldrake, she decided to turn this vast underground array of information-delivering filaments—which she describes as “a huge communication system, like the brain of the earth”—into fodder for her latest couture collection, titled Roots of Rebirth.

The fusing of nature with technology—and the revelation that the two have more in common than we typically think—is the foundation of van Herpen’s work. The designer has harnessed everything from iron filings to “dragon skin,” a type of silicone used by the military as body armor, to create her stunning, otherworldly designs. She maintains a scientific detachment from the Sturm und Drang of the fashion world, collaborating with biologists and programmers rather than influencers, and refers to her couture atelier as a “laboratory” for experimentation. “She draws a lot of inspiration from the natural world,” says her friend Cyrill Gutsch, founder and CEO of Parley for the Oceans, and regards it “in a way that others don’t see nature—the construction and the ingenuity behind it.”

You might associate couture with all things Luddite, built as it is on painstaking embroideries and delicate lace, but van Herpen finds her futuristic techniques to be just as viable. “Craftsmanship and couture has always been about innovation,” she says. “We tend to forget about it sometimes. But if we think of very traditional techniques, like early lacemaking, or even the sewing machine—at the time, they were highly innovative.”

Van Herpen tells me her goal is to eventually make her collections from 100% recycled materials. The theme of this show, she says, “connects really beautifully to the sustainability focus that I’ve been diving into, because fungi are now being harvested to clean up nuclear fallout, but also plastic waste.” (Not to mention that for fashion designers, mushrooms “are probably going to be very important collaborators in our near future,” in the form of biodegradable fabrics grown from mushroom spores.) This season, she incorporated fabric made from recycled ocean plastic, part of a collaboration with Parley for the Oceans. Van Herpen met Gutsch years ago at a dinner in Paris, where they fell into a two-hour conversation about the environment and the role of designers in driving change. Later, she visited their offices in New York to learn more about their work. Parley for the Oceans has collaborated with a wide array of brands, including Adidas and Stella McCartney, but couture is a new avenue for them, and brings with it a new audience for sustainability. (Gutsch tells me he prefers the term “eco-innovation.”)

“I’ve always loved [Iris] for being so free and independent and actually strange in what she does,” Gutsch tells me. “It feels like she’s protecting creative innocence, in a way. And on the other hand, there is ingenuity and enormous craftsmanship.”

The “Is couture relevant?” question comes up every season, though young designers are doing a lot to keep it feeling exciting, from Area’s disco-fabulous, size-inclusive couture debut to Daniel Roseberry’s witty reimagining of Schiaparelli’s codes. Yes, Van Herpen’s clothes, many of which are destined for museums rather than the average person’s closet, might feel abstract. But including recycled ocean waste on a couture runway seems like a re-thinking of what luxury means, not to mention a harbinger of what’s to come. Fashion’s most exalted realm might not initially seem like the venue for conservation: in its Platonic form, it’s come to represent a flaunting-it attitude of ostentatious waste. But that is changing. “I really believe that couture can be the frontier for fashion, innovation, and sustainability,” the designer tells me, and that its influence can change people’s thinking. She makes an analogy with fine art: you might not ever be able to have a Picasso hanging in your living room, but its existence shapes the way you see nonetheless.

And for those who are customers, not awed spectators, awareness has become aspirational. (Just think about one of the most talked-about looks from last week’s inauguration: Bernie Sanders’ much-worn parka and mittens made from upcycled materials.) “It’s becoming more and more important to know where the materials come from, to know how the garment was made,” van Herpen says. “And I think it’s only accelerated through the pandemic, that people feel the fragility of where we are and who we are.”

“I see way more interest and way more commitment,” from fashion companies now when it comes to sustainability, Gutsch concurs. Young designers like van Herpen believe in it implicitly, while the bigger names have taken more coaxing but are coming on board. “With more established maisons, they feel under pressure now,” he says. “They’re scared that they are missing out.”
