Kim Ng, Sarah Fuller, and the WNBA: Relive 2020’s Best Moments For Women in Sports

Had we known what 2020 had in store, we would’ve sent our sports schedules straight through a paper shredder. We missed the Olympics while college and pro leagues alike canceled competitions and then entire seasons, a tough environment for athletes, fans, and the industry as a whole. But even in a strange and abbreviated sports year, women athletes across the world stayed busy breaking records and making statements.

The NWSL and WNBA put together late seasons and gave us some top-tier sports to enjoy, but of course, players weren’t the only ones changing the game. Kim Ng became the first woman general manager in any of the four major American sports leagues; the NWSL announced plans for a Los Angeles team with a star-studded, woman-dominated ownership group; and women across the sports landscape used their platforms to protest police brutality and racial violence. Looking back, we see women in sports breaking records and glass ceilings while giving us some of the brightest moments of 2020 along the way. Take a look back and relive 12 that we’ll never forget, and get ready (we know we are) for even more brilliance in 2021.

Actually, Prince Charles Picked Out Princess Diana’s Engagement Ring

If you keep an eye on the royal family at all, you’ve definitely seen Princess Diana’s 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire engagement ring on the Duchess of Cambridge’s finger—she’s been wearing it since she got engaged to Prince William in the fall of 2010. But before it got its second life with Kate, this ring caught the eye of the world when Lady Diana Spencer flashed her hand at the cameras upon her engagement to Prince Charles.

As Brides notes and The Crown covers, Diana reportedly chose this specific ring because it reminded her of her mother’s engagement ring. The ring did have royal influences though; per The Daily Mail, the crown jeweler Gerrard, who made the ring, was inspired by Prince Albert’s wedding gift to Queen Victoria in 1840: a brooch with a diamond-and-sapphire design. The brooch was Victoria’s “something blue” at her wedding, and Queen Elizabeth now wears it for special events.

Before her unexpected death in August of 1997, Diana wrote the following in “a letter of wishes” to her executors to add to her will: “I would like you to divide my personal chattels at your discretion between my sons and godchildren, the division being three quarters to my sons and one quarter to my godchildren. I would like you to allocate all my jewelry to the share to be held by my sons, so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it. I leave the exact division of the jewelry to your discretion.”

We know plenty of details about this ring in its afterlife, but what about its first? Here are the details of Diana’s ring, and why for her, it was the one.

The royal family reportedly thought it wasn’t special enough.

This white-gold ring with the Ceylon sapphire and 14 solitaire diamonds cost Prince Charles about double what I owe the federal government in student loans. As far as the royal family was concerned, though, it was not fit for a future queen. Was it because this ring didn’t feature a big honkin’ diamond? Actually, no. As Vogue reports, the issue was that Diana picked the ring out from a Garrard catalogue, where anyone else with £47,000 (a little more than $60,000 today) could also select it—royal or not. This ring simply wasn’t exclusive enough.

According to the House of Garrard, though, Diana actually didn’t pick out the ring, despite reports that she personally selected it. “Prince Charles had always seen this beautiful sapphire brooch of his mother’s,” the jewelry brand told Marie Claire in 2017, and “when he went to House of Garrard he saw that ring, and thought it was perfect.”

Diana’s two most famous rings now belong to the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex.

As Oprah magazine notes, Diana loved her engagement ring and wore it consistently, even after she and Charles separated. But after Diana and Charles got divorced in 1996, the princess switched out the sapphire for an emerald-cut aquamarine ring that now belongs to Meghan Markle.

When Diana died in a tragic car accident in 1997, the ring was returned to the Wales family, and as she laid out in her wishes, her sons took possession of it. As Vogue pointed out following the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death in 2017, there were rumors that Harry initially chose the sapphire ring, but when he saw how much William loved Kate, he let his brother have it.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

“It’s my mother’s engagement ring, and it’s very special to me, as Kate is very special to me now as well. It was only right the two were put together,” William said in his initial engagement interview with Kate. “It was my way of making sure mother didn’t miss out on today and the excitement and the fact that we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together.”

“I just hope I look after it,” Kate said in her engagement interview. “It’s very, very special.” According to E! News, the ring is now worth £300,000, or $500,000.

The sapphire ring remains one of the most famous in the world.

When William gave the ring to Kate, a whole new generation of royal fans took interest in it. Some, like this one featured in The Sun, even have replicas of it.

As Vanity Fair noted earlier this year, Kate hasn’t been wearing the famous bobble much lately. In footage during the early days of the pandemic, she was wearing her wedding band without her engagement ring. To be fair, lockdown doesn’t really lend itself to jewelry valued at half a million dollars.

Gal Gadot may play the powerful warrior goddess Diana Prince onscreen, but the Wonder Woman 1984 star has her own IRL superpower. “[Red lipstick] is something that runs in my family because my grandmother used to wear red lips,” Gadot tells ELLE.com. “My mom wears red lips every day. And I think it’s just something that I got used to growing up, seeing, having the women in my life wear red lips.”

Diana herself seems to be a fan of the beauty staple, sporting her fiery shade in the WW84 trailer. When she isn’t fighting off villains and saving the world, Gadot believes her character is a pro at applying lipstick. “Diana’s been living for years and years and years and years, so she’s excellent,” she says with a laugh. “These things come easy to her.” As for Gadot, her go-to red lip is a drugstore favorite. “I absolutely love Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipstick in Super Red,” she adds. “I love the shade, formula, texture. It never moves, and it’s easy to use.”

Wonder Woman 1984 was slated to premiere back in October but got pushed to December 25th due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. On Christmas day, fans will be able to watch the film in select theaters and on HBO Max. Much like the rest of the world, Gadot is still processing the events of the past year, but is trying to stay positive.” Honestly, if you told me a year ago, I would’ve flipped out and told you, ‘no way,'” she admits. “But the truth of the matter is, we didn’t have a better solution. It wasn’t an easy decision, but the thought of families watching our movie on Christmas day warmed my heart, and the movie feels more relevant than ever. So I’m super excited that the time has come.”

In the new film, Diana takes on the year 1984, fully adjusted to life outside Themyscira. Once a fish out of water, Wonder Woman now understands humankind’s complexities and has gained some of her own experience in pain and suffering—Diana is still mourning the loss of her lover Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), who died in the first movie. By now, fans know that Steve returns for the sequel after appearing in the trailer, but his revival is shrouded in mystery.

Gadot can’t say much about Pine’s reappearance but thinks audiences will be “surprised” by the film. “It was like coming back to my second home,” she says. “It was wonderful. [Chris, director Patty Jenkins, and I] experienced the first one together, and coming back to set to work with not only coworkers but friends is the best feeling one could ever ask for.”

What’s In Liza Koshy’s Lady Dior Bag? Croissants, Tampons, and Deodorant, Of Course

Medium Lady D-Lite Bag

Since its debut in 1995, the Lady Dior bag has remained a hallmark in the fashion house’s lineup. The Lady Dior bag became synonymous with the woman it was named after—Lady Diana, Princess of Wales—thanks to its elegance, playfulness, and beauty. Leaning into the bag’s playful side, Dior launched a new video series titled In My Lady where various personalities give viewers a glimpse of what they fit into the quilted lambskin tote. First up: Liza Koshy.

Captured at Dior’s fall/winter 2020-2021 show by Maria Grazia Chiuri, Koshy greets viewers in a head-to-toe powder pink Dior look, punctuated with her Lady D-Lite tote in a dusty rose shade. If you feared that you wouldn’t be able to pack a ton of items in your Lady D-Lite, allow Koshy to change your mind. The first item Koshy pulls out of her bag is a ring light, which can double as an extra light for attendees taking pictures or for the content creator herself to, well, capture more content. “This is how you start a career,” she jokes.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

In true Koshy fashion, she pulls out the unexpected: two pain au chocolats (chocolate croissants). Next, a pair of powder pink Dior sunnies, the actual Dior show invitation (“Who licked this envelope? Maria, herself?”), and a toothbrush to slick down her edges. The contents of Koshy’s bag are as random and practical as you’d expect from the busy creative. Clinical-strength deodorant? Check. A Dior J’adore Eau de Parfum? Obviously. A pen? “In case I need to write down anybody’s number,” she says.

“My relationship with my bag is a little bit like me, a little messy but practical. I have a little bit of everything inside of me—mostly crazy, mostly messy—which is what my bag is,” she says towards the end of the video.

Whether your trying to figure out if your philandering husband has committed murder or just trying to figure out which brand of brie cheese goes best with your charcuterie board for one (no shame), it’s best done in a chic (and functional) winter coat.

Bella Hadid in 3.Paradis + More Canadian Fashion Moments This Week

Photography courtesy of Instagram/@3.Paradis.

From Bella in 3.Paradis to Sasha Exeter in sweats, here’s some local style inspo.

2020 might be winding down (*finally*) but our favourite fashionistas are still serving the style inspo we need – nay, deserve – as we head closer to 2021. If you’re in the mood for a diversion from this year’s stressors, take a pause to enjoy our favourite Canadian fashion moments this week: Three looks featuring Canadian brands sure to get your winter wardrobe juices flowing, whether it’s for a stroll outside or a WFH vibe.

Bella Hadid in 3.Paradis

The brunette beauty made a statement while taking to the streets of New York City in a decidedly classic look composed of a preppy v-neck sweater, ankle-length jeans and loafers, topping it off with a twist thanks to her artful Dollar Blazer by Montreal-founded label 3.Paradis. Bella’s clearly taking Carrie Bradshaw’s statement of, “I like my money right where I can see it – hanging in my closet” to a whole new level.

Olivia Palermo in Smythe

In more New York minutes, Olivia Palermo snapped a sweet pic of her and her husband, Johannes Huebl, while taking in the pre-snowstorm weather earlier this week. Palermo looked every bit the uptown girl in a roll-neck sweater and classic hair bun, and pulled everything together with Toronto-based brand Smythe’s elegant – and sadly, sold out – Birkin coat.

Sasha Exeter in Tkees & Roots

More casual outfit inspo came our way courtesy of influencer Sasha Exeter, who paired a classic grey sweatsuit by Tkees with Roots cabin socks; she added a bit of oomph to the outfit via a tried-and-true styling trick, the half-tucked top. The monochromatic, laidback look mirrored Sasha’s statement about self-care and what she wishes her younger self knew about boundary setting, the importance of rest and saying “no.”

Cancelled Marathons Didn’t Stop Runners From Hitting That 26.2 Mile Mark in 2020

Side view of determined young Asian woman listening to music with earphones, jogging at the park, against sunset.

Among the many things that changed in 2020, people’s exercise routines looked a little different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Notably, many athletic competitions, like races, were cancelled this year.

But according to Strava’s annual Year in Sport Data Report, that didn’t stop users of the fitness app from tackling their wellness goals. Hundreds of thousands of 26.2 mile runs were reported on the platform, meaning runners participated in solo marathons in the absence of the organized ones that usually take place.

It was also a big year for breaking personal records. More than half of runners on the app — 55 percent — who ran 5Ks, 10Ks, half-marathons, and marathons logged a new best time. Plus, perhaps attributable to people having more free time this year, users active in both 2019 and 2020 saw an increase in activity frequency of over 13 percent.

Running was not the only popular form of exercise in 2020. Users got on their feet to do all kinds of activity, including cycling and indoor workouts, which both also saw a rise in uploads. Walking, however, seemed to be the favorite new way to workout.

This year, there were three times as many uploads of outdoor walks as in 2019, and it was the top new activity among cyclists on Strava.

The Mandalorian Puts Everything on the Line for Baby Yoda

After the tragic events of last week’s episode saw the separation of our favorite clan of two, it was only fitting that the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) would come back fighting. And in “Chapter 15: The Believer,” our eponymous bounty hunter showed he was more than willing to put himself—his whole self—on the line for The Child.

The episode opens at the Karthon Chop Fields, where a droid is looking for Inmate 34667, a.k.a. Migs Mayfield (Bill Burr). He’s serving time for his involvement in the mission to rescue prisoner Qin from Bothan-Five, a New Republic Correctional Transport, but Marshall Cara Dune (Gina Carano) has other plans. She takes Mayfield into her custody so he can aid Mando, Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), and Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) in their search for Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), who managed to steal our baby Grogu away in “The Tragedy.”

As a former Imperial officer, Mando is betting on Mayfield remembering all his protocols to gain access to the Imperial terminal and locate Gideon’s coordinates. Hoping he might get something sweet out of the deal, Mayfield suggests they head to the planet Morak, where a secret Imperial mining hub can be found. This Suicide Squad of sorts heads there in Fett’s ship (RIP Razor Crest), and Mayfield is given sharp new garms to wear instead of his prison clothes. Sure was lucky the deadly bounty hunter had a circle scarf onboard to complete Mayfield’s combat look!

Upon landing in the tropical climes of Morak, the gang has to work out who’s going with Mayfield to the refinery, where the Imperial terminal is located. But the security protocols involve genetic signatures that would cause problems for the outlaws and Dune, who’s breaking more than a few rules to save the kid.

the mandalorian

Disney

Super dad Mando volunteers; as he’s never revealed his face, he’s not on any systems that could recognize him. Though he’s not keen on removing his helmet for the crew, that problem is swiftly solved once they commandeer an Imperial Combat Assault Transport carrying rhydonium, a volatile and explosive substance. Mando steals one of the defeated stormtrooper’s uniforms and a helmet, and he and Mayfield set off to the refinery.

Thus begins the Vietnam War-movie vibes of the episode, with Burr delivering the energy of a disillusioned vet who uses humor to mask the dark despair and post-traumatic stress of what he’s seen in combat. “Invaders in their land is all we are,” he tells Mando before pointing out the inconsistencies of the Mandalorian code: Is it that Mandalorians are not allowed to take off their helmets, or that Mandalorians are not meant to show their face? Fair point.

“I’m a realist, I’m a survivor just like you,” Mayfield continues. “Your rules change the more desperate you get. Everyone has the lines they don’t cross until it gets messy.”

This existential conversation is short-lived, as alien pirates soon try to blow up the transport. Mando engages in an impressive show of combat zeal without the protection of his Beskar armor, and after some ass-kicking and blasting, he kills the attackers and secures their safe arrival at the refinery. As the only Transport to return intact, the pair are cheered. “Glory of the empire,” the stormtroopers shout, which is certainly a new one for Mando. Still, they don’t have time to waste, and head to the mess hall so Mayfield can access the Imperial terminal.

Alas, yet another obstacle: Mayfield spots his former commander Valin Hess (Richard Brake) and refuses to go in. Mando, of course, is not aborting the mission. “I’ll lose the kid forever,” he says, a reminder of exactly what’s at stake. So Mando goes in and couldn’t look more suspicious, but hey, the guy’s knackered after single-handedly taking out five gangs of pirates.

Hess is keeping a beady eye on him, so when the terminal starts bleeping because the bounty hunter’s helmet is preventing the facial image from rendering, Hess’s attention is rapt. But just as the security protocol really makes a noise, Mando does it. He takes his off his helmet and reveals the most beautiful dad in the Star Wars universe.

Nice to see you, Djin Djardin.

Mando gets the coordinates, but Hess is on his feet and in the interrogating mood. Luckily, Mayfield finally puts on his big-boy boots and jumps to the bounty hunter’s side to cover. He pretends Mando, now fondly known as Brown Eyes, isn’t altogether there because of an accident. This convinces Hess, and after confirming the two were the same Transport Officers to survive the pirates, Hess demands they get a celebratory drink together.

Here’s where it gets dark and Mayfield’s witty facade falters. Faced with his former commanding officer toasting the Empire, Mayfield reminds him of Operation: Cinder on Burnin Konn. Hess had given the order to destroy the entire city, including a division of five to ten thousand men who left behind families and loved ones. Hess is dismissive about the loss of life, and a frustrated Mayfield asks if it was necessary to kill his fellow soldiers and civilians—people fighting for their freedom. Hess laughs and says, “we’ve outlasted them,” before excitedly sharing his plans to wreak even more havoc on the New Republic with the rhydonium: He’s sure it’ll cause the people to pine for Imperial control once more. “Everybody thinks they want freedom but what they really want is order,” Hess says.

the mandalorian

Disney

Mayfield’s resolve fails and he shoots his former commander in the chest. Alerting the rest of the Imperial forces to their subterfuge, he and Mando have to make an escape out of high windows overlooking a steep drop. Fennec and Cara have their backs with some sharp shooting, while Boba pulls up in Slave I to pick them up. Looking back on the refinery, Mayfield proves his worth, taking aim at some rhydonium and blowing the entire facility up.

This cathartic moment for the former soldier of the Empire impresses Marshal Dune. When the team reunites, she suggests Inmate 34667 died in the explosion, and Mayfield heads off to freedom, circle scarf and all. Then we have the most epic, heart-squeezing moment of all, as Moff Gideon receives a message from our Mandalorian, helmet-wearing hero: “Moff Gideon, you have something I want,” he declares, quoting bacl the antagonist’s words from “Chapter 7: The Reckoning.” “You may think you have some idea of what you’re in possession of, but you do not. Soon, he will be back with me. He means more to me than you will ever know.”

It’s clear Mando is the titular Believer, putting aside the Mandalorian traditions he inherited in favor of the beliefs he’s acquired since meeting our lil’ green friend. Grogu has taught Djin Djardin a new way, with a code of principles that recognizes one cannot simply ignore the battle between good and evil. Mayfield comes to this conclusion too, hence why he goes AWOL from the Empire. Both prove that sometimes, beliefs have to change to save lives and loved ones. The increasingly powerful bond between the Mandalorian, the Child, and the clan of misfits who’ve supported them along the way is something we can all believe in. This is the Way.

Remember Shopping…In Stores? Colette Mon Amour Will Make You Nostalgic

style points

Style Points is a weekly column about how fashion intersects with the wider world.

To watch Colette, Mon Amour, the new documentary about the beloved Paris boutique, at a time when “going inside a store” and “mingling with other people” both feel like alien activities hits, as they say, different. Watching, I was immediately transported to the last time I walked through the doors of the store on the Rue Saint-Honoré. It was during Paris Fashion Week, and I was there to see a fashion show being held upstairs, but first I had to ford my way through a first floor full of excited elbow-to-elbow shoppers excitedly brandishing their finds.

Karl Hab

A few months after I made that visit, in December 2017, Colette closed its doors after 20 years, and in the film celebrities and designers mourn its passing, their distress shown via cutesy animated tear emojis. Virgil Abloh, Kanye West, Sacai’s Chitose Abe, and Kith’s Ronnie Fieg are among those giving their eulogies. “When I heard about the closing, I was in disbelief,” says Pharrell Williams. “I’m still in disbelief.” West sums it up: “Colette was the internet before the internet.”

Directed by Hugues Lawson-Body, Colette, Mon Amour has enough talking heads to fill a CNN one-hour block, but it doesn’t stint on showing the parts of the store that were more removed from the celebrity buzz cycle: the kids and tourists lined up around the block, streaming in every day at 11am as if into a theme park, a brace-faced kid whose parents named her after the store, and the diverse cast of cool kids working there, tenders of the Colette temple who helped make the store what it was.

Of course, at the heart of the Colette magic are Colette Rousseaux, the store’s namesake, and her daughter Sarah Andelman. “We never tried to create this cult,” Andelman swears when I reach her on the phone. The two convinced brands to do collaborations back when those were a novelty, working with everyone from huge fashion houses like Hermès and Chanel, to street artists, to fashion-industry insiders like show producer Alexandre de Betak, sound designer Michel Gaubert, and publicist Lucien Pagès. “Any creativity deserves space beyond just the limited fashion world,” was her reason for incorporating them, she says, pointing out the number of formerly behind-the-scenes fashion personalities who have since come front and center, like runway hairstylists and makeup artists with their own lines.

victoria and david beckham at colette

Marc PiaseckiGetty Images

The celebrity quotient was “never something we wanted to use to make us more famous,” Andelman insists. Still, the store played host to starry events like an Apple Watch launch with Colette fanatic Karl Lagerfeld in attendance. (“Mr Lagerfeld used to come in every Saturday,” like clockwork, she says.) One night, Andelman says, the store drew Catherine Deneuve and Travis Scott on the same night. But it wasn’t all Kimye and Posh & Becks (although both super-couples did make appearances there.) “I remember, one day, seeing a guy with a parrot on his shoulder. Another day, the guy who cleans the streets came in for some sneakers.” Colette was inclusive when fashion prioritized exclusivity, democratic before the much-vaunted “democratization” of fashion, experiential before retail became an “experience.” While the shop sat on a hoity-toity corridor in the first arrondissement, everyone was welcome there. “That was really our philosophy from day one, to be open to everybody and to have a mix of items” in a range of prices, Andelman explains. At first, she says “people were scared to come in because they thought it would be too luxury.” But soon enough, the crowds found them.

pharrell williams at colette

Karl Hab

Looking at it now, the Colette phenomenon feels both deliriously ahead of its time, for all the reasons mentioned above, and wonderfully old-school, evoking the temporarily lost joys of being in a space with other people and feeding off their energy and excitement about fashion. Andelman tells me she has “no regrets” about the closing. Since then, she’s been busy with her consulting and curation business Just an Idea, which she founded in 2018. Despite fashion’s fondness for reboot culture, she has no plans to reboot Colette, in any form, she tells me. Formerly a regular at fashion shows, she now describes her relationship to the runway as “much more distant. I still go to a few [shows] every season, because they are friends. One part of me really doesn’t miss the wait, and all the da-da-da. And then sometimes, it’s just ten minutes which is worth a year of your life, because it’s so extraordinary. You never know in advance.” The serendipity she’s describing is the same quality that Colette itself had—the one that makes fashion worth putting up with despite all the da-da-da.

This is Texture Talk, a weekly column that deep dives into the dynamic world of curly hair, from crowns of curls that are free flowing to strands that are tucked away in a protective style.

We’ve said it once, twice and we’ll keep on reiterating it: Styling curls and achieving ample definition truly begins once you step into the shower – not when you get out. This is why being picky about the selecting the right shampoo and conditioner that work in tandem to leave you with a head full of healthy, bouncy strands is one of the most important things you can do for your hair routine, no matter your curl type.

For years, it has been well documented and understood that curly and straight hair are essentially polar opposites in terms of the shape of the hair follicle (the biggest determinant on whether hair strands grow round or straight from the scalp). It’s these structural differences that cause curls and coils to naturally be much drier, coarser and not as resistant — aka a recipe for being more prone to breakage — compared to straight strands. And the tighter the curl pattern, the more fragile the hair becomes.

Diving deeper into the science, all hair, whether curly or straight, is made up of a tough protein called keratin and keratin is made of up amino acids. Still with us? Good. Keep on reading.

Nexxus Curl Define Shampoo , $15

Hair scientists have long thought that all hair types were made up of the same type of keratin protein, and that its distribution via the hair follicle down to the hair shaft is what also determined how each strand is structured: In a straight-haired follicle, keratin is evenly distributed down the centre and in curls and coils, keratin accumulates more on one side. But haircare brand Nexxus has some pretty game-changing news.

Through the power of proteomic science (the study of proteins), Nexxus discovered that it’s not just the structure of the hair follicles that’s different in curly vs straight hair, but the actual proteins inside differ greatly as well.

“Curly hair and straight hair have different keratin proteins.” says Dr. Fraser Bell, science insights leader for Nexxus, adding that those specific curl proteins are richer in key amino acid building blocks, glycine and serine, which appear at a frequency of two to six times greater than in straight strands.

Plain and simple: Curls and coils require more protein. With this knowledge, Nexxus spent two years formulating, testing, and rejigging its first-ever range exclusively for curls and coils – from curl type 3A up to 4C – called Curl Define.

Nexxus Curl Define Conditioner, $17

Landing on shelves in February, Curl Define is powered by silk protein to keep curly hair on its best behaviour. “Silk protein is rich in the same building blocks as curls and coils,” says Bell. Another star ingredient is marula oil, which has been proven to deeply penetrate curly hair and boost curl shape and shine. As for specific products, you’ll find a non-stripping, sulfate-free shampoo, a moisture-locking rinse-out conditioner, and a leave-in conditioner ideal for in-shower detangling that controls frizz and leaves curls soft, defined and ready for whatever styling products you reach for next. Bonus: Thanks to its lightweight texture, you don’t have to worry about any pesky build up, either.

“What I love about this line is that I can add whatever product I want into my an existing regimen to match a client’s needs. It’s not designed that you have to use it as a full range,” says celebrity hairstylist and Nexxus consulting stylist Lacey Redway. And if you’re a fan of co-washing your curls in between a good shampooing like Redway, the rinse-out conditioner is prime for that, she says.

Nexxus Curl Define Leave-In Conditioner, $17

“I’ll also sometimes leave it in [for a few minutes] as a deep conditioner with a shower cap or Saran wrap and let the natural heat from the scalp heat the product up for better detangling.” Donning a braid or twist-related protective style? The hair pro has a Curl Define multitasking tip for that, too. “Put a little bit of the leave-in conditioner into a spray bottle, add some water and mix it up. The fine mist will penetrate [the hairstyle] and moisturize your hair inside.”

These Are the Arm and Leg Exercises Olympian Allyson Felix Does For Strength and Power

Allyson Felix hasn’t made her fifth Olympic team yet, but there’s a high possibility we’ll see her sporting USA on her chest at the Tokyo Olympics. The track and field Olympic trials and Tokyo Olympics were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Felix has adapted to the changes, staying focused on her goal of making another team and adding more gold medals to her collection.

“I continued to train through the pandemic to try and stay ‘on schedule’ as much as I could given all the changes and lack of competition,” Felix told POPSUGAR via email in an interview to discuss her partnership with Dr. Scholl’s. She’s been training since October, and her typical schedule consists of waking up at 7 a.m. for “me time”; breakfast and spending time with her daughter, Camryn, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.; endurance training and interval training from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; lunch and resting from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.; strength training from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; and doing recovery work from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Her current strength-training program consists of “a lot of weightlifting” with plyometric exercises (her favorite). A few of the exercises she does in her weightlifting sessions are weighted front squats, deadlifts, push to press, pull-ups, and high pulls. “This type of strength training really helps with muscle growth and helps me build on that explosive energy I need to get out of the blocks and accelerate while running,” she explained.

If you want to become a better sprinter or you simply want to improve your strength and power and, as a result, your overall athletic performance, adding these types of exercises into your routine can help. We can’t guarantee you’ll end up with the strength, explosive power, or speed that Felix has, but we do know they’ll help you get one step closer to performing at your best. Check out how to do some of Felix’s go-to moves ahead.

Cardi B Returns to Reality TV With Cardi Tries on Facebook and Instagram

We asked Instagram to restore chronological order snd they gave us Instagram Stories. We begged again for the algorithm to return to its original format, and Instagram gave us Reels. We kept campaigning for chronological order, so Instagram gave us the next best thing: a Cardi B reality show.

A reality show on Instagram? Yes, you read that correctly. Launching today, December 17, Cardi B’s new series, titled Cardi Tries, follows the star as she tries her hand at activities she’s never done before. Returning to the world of reality television since her departure from VH1’s Love & Hip-Hop in 2016, viewers will watch as practices ballet with renowned dancer, choreographer, actress, and director Debbie Allen; learns how to cook sushi and serve it at a restaurant; goes behind the scenes at a wig-making factory, and plays basketball. “Have you done ballet before?” Allen asks Cardi in the clip. “I used to be a stripper,” she replies.

The new eight-episode series was created by Facebook Messenger and Jesse Collins Entertainment and is part of the platform’s new Watch Together feature, where families and friends can watch content together in real time on Facebook Messenger and Instagram. Cardi Tries will debut a new episode every Thursday starting today until February 4.

In addition to her glam team, Tokyo Stylez and Kollin Carter, and husband Offset, Cardi will join other experts from various fields, including Michelle Rodriguez of the Fast & Furious franchise and Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Valentino Opens the Doors of Its Virtual Home, and It’s Beautiful

Valentino is diving deeper into the virtual realm. This week, the Roman luxury brand launched Valentino Insights, an immersive experience that invites fans to walk around a digital 3D replica of a modernist Mediterranean villa inspired by creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s own home in Nettuno, Italy. It comes on the tails of other innovative digital initiatives that Valentino debuted this year including #ChezMaisonValentino, a series of IG Live musical performances, and a dreamy fall 2020 couture collection streamed from Rome’s historic Cinecittà Studios.

Using VR platforms to engage communities of socially isolating individuals has been a big industry trend in 2020. Balenciaga showcased its fall 2021 collection via a fantasy video game found on its website. And Dolce & Gabbana recently launched shoppable digital replicas of its stores. Valentino Insights follows the same kind of single-player, exploration-style format, but instead of taking audiences on a journey to a space-age realm or a boutique, it lets them experience Piccioli’s lifestyle.

Snapshot of Valentino Insights

Valentino

Created by Vertual, the video game-like experience is situated in an expansive, open-floor plan villa inspired by Piccioli’s residence in the coastal town an hour outside of Rome, where he was raised. High ceilings and large windows give the space a sense of grandeur, while the decor—’60s-style chairs and center tables—are cast in warm, inviting colors. The villa also contains interactive items: a red phone with a voice recording, a record player with a curated Spotify playlist, and, of course, Valentino accessories, including the new Roman Stud Chain Bag that can be purchased with a click.

Valentino Insights will be continuously updated with products, activities, and news from the brand. By opening the doors of the maison (albeit virtually), the platform is fostering a sense of kinship between the label and its customers.

Why Outnumber is Toronto’s Newest Need-to-Know Fashion Label

Photography courtesy of Outnumber.

“I felt like this process was meant to be.”

“I’m looking forward to romancing people with my designs,” says Kakra Juma-Nuamah, founder of the newly launched Toronto-based label, Outnumber. Juma-Nuamah – who previously worked for Ssense, where she honed her appreciation for the art of e-commerce and luxury design – introduced her brand with a selection of sultry apparel and lingerie items, as well as a bold, boxy, made-in-Italy bag called the Mini Firma.

“I always thought that if I’m going to [start a brand], I want it to be of high quality,” Juma-Nuamah says of her pieces. “One of the places in the world where that exists, to me, is Italy.” After digging in to finding suppliers and makers to help her realize her dream of launching Outnumber (“I’m a research queen,” she affirms), Juma-Nuamah connected with an artisanal family business and it proved to be a match made in handbag heaven. The Mini Firma currently comes in five colours and features a bamboo handle with alligator-embossed leather; it’s a timeless scene-stealer that, if street style were still thriving, would surely be seen on the arm of a fashion show attendee or three.

Juma-Nuamah says she’s driven by a pursuit of perfection when it comes to her work. “I want to create something that means a lot and would stand the test of time,” she says. Perhaps that’s why the iconic designs from Tom Ford’s tenure at Gucci resonate so deeply with her; and you can see the ‘90s influence in Outnumber’s selection of apparel that includes a halter-style dress and top. “I’m really into a refined, empowered look,” Juma-Nuamah notes, adding that she was inspired to design the brand’s tops after creating a dustbag for the Mini Firma; the effect is a cheeky garment that would make a surrealist artist proud.

In this way, creativity has always been an outlet for Juma-Nuamah, who says that the process has carried her through tough times. “I turned to creating and designing things when I was little; that was my escape and way to feel whole in the world despite the outside world being very chaotic for me. Without it, I don’t know where I’d be.” She notes that she admires Virgil Abloh and Mowalola Ogunlesi’s contributions to the design landscape, the latter in particular for her “fearless and authentic” approach.

Juma-Nuamah hopes that now her own presence on the fashion stage will inspire others who need it. “I wanted to show people that you don’t have to come from anything to make a big dream happen,” she says. “My upbringing wasn’t the easiest, and that’s why I’m determined to pave a path of my own.”

This tenacity is perhaps no more evident than in Juma-Nuamah’s decision to launch Outnumber this year (albeit later than her initially-planned March release). “I had friends worry about me launching, saying that maybe it isn’t the right time,” she recalls. “I thought, I’ve been working on this for about three years and I just had a gut feeling to go for it. I feel like sometimes fear prevents people from doing things, and my understanding is that you don’t really know what’s going to happen – tomorrow isn’t promised.”

She adds that when the pandemic hit in early spring, it gave her a moment of pause to reflect on how she wanted to continue and finesse her brand before putting it out into the universe; and she continues to ideate, saying that she’s working on a tote bag as well as footwear styles.

“I felt like this process was meant to be,” Juma-Nuamah says when highlighting how pleased she is with the look of her website, which was inspired by a restaurant in Florence, Italy that she visited while there on a business trip. “It’s sleek, cool, simple.” And because of that, it’s a perfect extension of her designs.

This May Be the Least “Fit” I’ve Been, but It’s the Strongest I’ve Felt

how to embrace strength over fit

By now, I would’ve run one marathon, three half-marathons, two 10Ks, and a smattering of other races this year. But 2020 had different plans. So although my usual training didn’t quite look the same, I still did my best to stay active. I tried new workouts, switched up old ones, and even used my workouts as ways to connect with friends.

In some ways, this is actually the most active I’ve ever been: I now make concentrated efforts to stand up and stretch each hour, I take daily walks, and I am intentional with each and every workout I plan. And yet in other ways, it’s the least fit I’ve felt. My body and attitude have changed toward running. Where normally I’d feel like I could run for hours, now I feel like I am spent after 30 minutes.

But despite that feeling of not meeting my normal “fitness” standards, I somehow feel stronger than I ever have. Admittedly, I was one of those runners who spent all their time planning out their mileage and routes and not near enough time on strength training or strengthening other aspects of my body. But as I’ve grown farther and farther away from running as I know it, I’ve learned to embrace a whole other side of fitness: the strength side.

I’ve tried new workouts that have me concentrating less on how far I can run and more on how many reps I can do in a strength circuit. I’ve embraced workouts that I had always been too nervous for or felt were out of my league. And as it turns out, they’ve worked. I went from hardly being able to do a squat series to feeling like I can do them all day. I can now hold several forms of planks, flawlessly. And I’ve even managed to outgrow the hand weights I’ve had for half a decade in favor of a heavier set.

More importantly, I shifted my own definition of fit. Whereas I felt like there was one route to fit for me before, I now realize there are many ways to push the body and be healthy. I’ve proved to myself that although I may not meet last year’s or the year before’s measures of “being in shape,” I’m still pushing myself to become stronger and better in new, powerful ways.

What’s more, I’ve learned that fitness goes beyond what the body can do. True fitness also involves an attention to mental strength and endurance. With that, I began to toss on my UA Infinity Low Sports Bra ($35) and roll out my yoga mat. I even started to embrace a meditation practice that has taught me to be strong in ways that my body will never be.

So while I may not look or feel the way I could’ve ever anticipated, I’ve learned there is no one right way to have a fitness routine and bring health into your life.

Who Is the Mushroom on Season 4 of The Masked Singer?

Last week, Fox’s The Masked Singer gave us a special Thanksgiving episode that featured Ken Jeong in a turkey hat and more references to the holiday than we ever needed. Just because it was a special episode doesn’t mean there wasn’t some heartbreak: Broccoli, who turned out to be Paul Anka, got sent home, and we ended up with the final contestants for tonight’s Super Six semi-finals: Jellyfish, Mushroom, Crocodile, Seahorse, Sun, and Popcorn. This is the first time they’ll perform outside of their individual groups, and three of them will go home. Next week, we’ll get a holiday sing-along, and then on December 16, the finals will reveal the season 4 champion.

By now, the panelists and fans have their best guesses for who’s behind the masks of every single character. We’ve seen everyone perform three times, and sent home and Whatchamacallit (Lonzo Ball), Serpent (Dr. Elvis Francois), the Snow Owls (Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black), Squiggly Monster (Bob Saget), the Lips (Wendy Williams), Baby Alien (Mark Sanchez), Giraffe (Brian Austin Green), Gremlin (Mickey Rourke), and Dragon (Busta Rhymes).

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Out of the remaining characters, Mushroom is one of the most talented of the bunch. Nicole Scherzinger has guessed Donald Glover, Jeong guessed Usher, and Jenny McCarthy thinks Frank Ocean could be under the mask. No matter what, though, Jeong is convinced Mushroom is “a massive star.”

Who do fans think this stylish fungus could be?

Pharrell Williams

A few fans on Twitter have guessed that Williams might be the musical talent who’s moonlighting as Mushroom. There was a giant brown hat in the clues package, which could definitely point to Pharrell’s signature accessory. He also has a falsetto, which we can hear in “This Woman’s Work” by Maxwell.

Billy Porter

Santiago FelipeGetty Images

Porter’s name appears several times on Twitter in conjunction with Mushroom. As Refinery29 pointed out, there was a specific clue that links the character to Porter: a reference to a hot dog stand. Porter was in the play Topdog/Underdog. There’s also a Star Search clue, and Porter won the title of best male vocalist in 1992. Porter has been known to love a good hat. Remember the 2020 Grammys?

Todrick Hall

todrick hall in concert new york city

Cindy OrdGetty Images

There was a reality-competition clue in the clues package, and this singer, actor, choreographer, and dancer made it to the finals on the ninth season of American Idol. The clue package had so many Hamilton references that it was almost overkill; it might not make sense for someone who was actually in Hamilton to be Mushroom, but Todrick does have a Broadway voice (he won a Tony for Lola in Kinky Boots). As far as the Hamilton connections, he made the album Billy Porter Presents the Soul of Richard Rodgers in 2017 with Hamilton cast members Renée Elise Goldsberry, Leslie Odom Jr., and Christopher Jackson. So all these Hamilton clues could just be The Masked Singer’s attempt at a red herring.

Jordan Fisher

celebrities visit buzzfeed's "am to dm" february 18, 2020

Jason MendezGetty Images

This guess might actually be the closest to being on target. Twitter seems to be pretty convinced that the Hamilton clues might be leading us to this actor, who played Philip/John Laurens in the show. The To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You actor has also piqued fans’ interests because there were Dear Evan Hanson clues, and Fisher was in that show, too. Good Housekeeping picked up on the clue that Mushroom “turned his hobby into a career,” and Fisher was a video game fanatic who now has a massive presence on Twitch.
