I Had Adaptogens Every Day For a Month, and I Didn’t Expect to Feel This Good

tmp_TudAWB_b2fbe3aeb92114c3_toa-heftiba-B5Thyv8d3mo-unsplash.jpg

Although I was skeptical at first, after reading about the countless benefits of adaptogens, I decided to give them a try for a month to see if I felt a difference. And now, just a month and a few days in, I can say that I’m never going back.

If you’re unfamiliar, adaptogens are plants and herbs that are thought to increase your body’s ability to handle stress, by “adapting” to what your body needs. They’ve been used for hundreds of years in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Brenda Powell, MD, co-medical director of the Center for Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute, told Time that adaptogens may train your adrenal glands the same way working out trains your muscles.

Although I was wary, I decided to give two different brands of adaptogens a try. I went with the JOYÀ Adaptogenic Immunity Bundle ($108, originally $135), which includes cacao, matcha, and turmeric elixirs, as well as adaptogens like ashwagandha and astragalus; and the Whimsy Official Glow Getter Collagen Blend ($49), a beautiful blue elixir that combines foods like maca and blue pea flower with the adaptogen rhodiola. Once I was set, I decided to mix my four new adaptogens into my teas and lattes every day for a month — and I really couldn’t believe the benefits.

Why I Chose These Specific Adaptogens

It’s important to note that each adaptogen will give you different results, so it’s important to read through the components of your chosen blend to make sure you’re getting all the benefits you want.

For example, while scientific studies are limited, ashwagandha is considered a “do-it-all” adaptogen that may relieve stress, improve endurance, protect brain function, and reduce inflammation, among other benefits. On the other hand, astragalus may strengthen the immune system, rhodiola is taken to combat physical and mental fatigue, and maca may increase libido, improve mood, balance hormones, and protect your skin. Learning about each adaptogen’s benefits can help ensure you’re taking something that supports your goals. Of course, it’s always wise to consult a doctor before taking anything regularly, especially if you have any medical conditions or take any medications.

I wanted to get the full adaptogen experience, so I alternated between different adaptogens based on my wants and needs each day, and it really worked to get me to my perfect middle ground.

How I Felt While Taking Adaptogens

In the first week of mixing the different adaptogens into my coffee, tea, or smoothies, I saw a noticeable glow and luminosity in my skin. I tend to feel puffy in the mornings, and the adaptogens seemed to help reduce overall inflammation much quicker than I would have expected.

Throughout the month, I continued to either drink my JOYÀ Cacao Elixir as an adaptogenic hot chocolate at night, make a perfect morning beauty elixir with my Whimsy Official Glow Getter, or use the other adaptogenic mix-ins in countless ways. I soon noticed I was less stressed throughout the day, I had more endurance in my afternoon workouts, I was more focused, and I felt more energetic and agile overall.

My skin is still as glowy as ever, and I’m looking forward to continuing to see the long-term benefits of adaptogens. Mixing these herbs into my diet has become a routine I look forward to, and it helps that these particular products taste amazing, too.

Though I was skeptical at first, I would definitely recommend adaptogens for anyone who’s feeling low-energy or particularly stressed. Especially in the fall and winter, adaptogenic blends are perfect for mixing into cozy, warm teas and lattes, and they just may help you feel revitalized.

Inside Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry’s Remembrance Sunday L.A. Cemetery Visit

Prince Harry and Meghan made a private visit to a Los Angeles cemetery Sunday to honor fallen soldiers and mark Remembrance Sunday in the U.K. A source close to the couple told ELLE.com, “It was important to the Duke and Duchess to be able to personally recognize Remembrance in their own way, to pay tribute to those who have served and to those who gave their lives.”

Meghan was dressed in an understated pleated custom wool satin faille Brandon Maxwell coat and belt, a favorite designer of the Duchess of Sussex and Michelle Obama. She accessorized with a red poppy and U.K.-based Jennifer Chamandi’s “Lorenzo” suede pumps, which retail for $715.

Meghan also appeared to be wearing her platinum $7,000 Cartier watch and a Carter LOVE bracelet. She’s worn a similar gold Cartier watch on several occasions recently; it’s believed to be Princess Diana’s watch, gifted to her by Prince Harry

Remembrance Sunday in the U.K. falls on the second Sunday in November, coinciding with Veterans Day in the United States, and marks the contribution of British and Commonwealth service members in the two World Wars and other military conflicts.

ELLE.com has also learned that the Sunday Times story reporting Prince Harry was denied a wreath being laid at the Cenotaph on the Sussexes’ behalf to honor the war dead for Remembrance Sunday in London was indeed accurate. Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Kate, along with the current and former prime ministers, all participated in a scaled-back service in London’s Whitehall Sunday.

The optics of denying the only member of the Royal Family to serve on the front lines at great personal risk to himself will not sit well in the military community or in the United States, where the Duke of Sussex enjoys widespread admiration for his heroism serving in Afghanistan. While Prince Andrew served as a helicopter pilot in the Falklands War, he never served on the front lines. Many individuals will see the move as petty and shortsighted given Harry’s long association with the military and his honorable service.

Prince Harry, who remains sixth in line despite stepping back as senior member of the Royal Family in March, arguably has done more for the military community in the United Kingdom with the exception of Her Majesty the Queen herself. At great personal peril, he served two tours of duty with honor, starting as “Captain Wales” before rising through the ranks to become Major Wales.

Upon his return from Afghanistan, Prince Harry created the Invictus Games, a Paralympic-style sporting competition to inspire recovery and to support rehabilitation, recognition, and respect for wounded, injured, and sick service members around the world. President-Elect Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden have been big supporters of Prince Harry’s Invictus Games and have worked closely with the Duke of Sussex promoting issues for the military community. The former U.S. vice president attended the Invictus Games in Orlando in 2016, and Dr. Jill Biden participated in several events with Prince Harry and First Lady Michelle Obama on the Joining Forces Initiative, which the then-First and Second Ladies helped create in 2011 to support military families.

With Dr. Biden at his side, then-VP Biden told competitors at the Invictus Games wheelchair rugby match, “You make a difference. Like the line in the poem [Invictus] says, ‘They are the masters of their fate,’ but what you also are, you’re also the captains of your countries’ soul. You are the spine. You are the backbone. Thanks for being who you are.'”

Meghan has also been a strong supporter of the military community long before her association with Prince Harry. The Duchess of Sussex joined a USO tour to support troops, visiting six countries, including Afghanistan, alongside U.S. Army General Martin Dempsey, who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs until 2015. Meghan’s grandfather Alvin Ragland served in the U.S. Coast Guard, and he often used the Veterans Affairs center across from the cemetery Meghan and Harry visited in Los Angeles Sunday.

While at the cemetery Sunday, the couple laid flowers the Duchess picked from their own garden at the graves of two Commonwealth soldiers.

They also placed a wreath signed by Harry, which read, “To all those who have served, and are serving. Thank you.” The tribute also featured a plaque inscribed “In Memory of the Men Who Offered Their Lives in Defence of Their Country.”

Harry also participated in the Declassified podcast, where he spoke movingly about the meaning of his military service and wearing the uniform.

“When I get asked about this period of my life I draw from memories, I draw from what I remember and who I remember,” he said, “like the first time we were shot at and who I was with, the casualties we saw, and those we saved. And the first medic we escorted out of contact in a race against time. Once served, always serving, no matter what… This is what Remembrance Day means to me.”

Here’s Why Treadmill Running Should Be Your Go-To This Winter

Ahead of the Peloton Tread launch in Canada, we spoke to one of their instructors about the benefits of treadmill running.

With gyms closed across most of Canada and temperatures dipping as we head into winter, at-home workouts are pretty much our only shot at breaking a sweat. Here to help with people’s indoor fitness routines is Peloton Tread, the fitness company’s new treadmill, which is launching in Canada in a few months on February 9.

The treadmill features a 23.8” HD touchscreen with integrated speakers and is designed to fit comfortably in most homes, thanks to a sleek design and dimensions that are smaller than most couches. Like the Peloton Bike and App, the Tread offers access to live and on-demand classes to help motivate and elevate your workouts.

While outdoor running provides many benefits, such as fresh air and a varied route, according to experts treadmill running offers the same cardio benefits for heart health. However, there are certain things to keep in mind. In order to burn as many calories on the treadmill as one would outdoors, the treadmill should be set at a 1 percent incline, according to research published in the Journal of Sports Sciences.

“Oftentimes, people forget to add resistance (incline) to their treadmill,” Becs Gentry, a Peloton Tread Instructor, tells FASHION. “This is essential to mimic the air resistance we experience running outside and without it, it can lead people to think that running inside is “easier.” Running outside of your capability is also easier to do on the treadmill as the inclination to run fast is right in front of you and the moving belt seems to assist in the ability to do so. Running faster than you are truly capable of for extended periods of time, 20 seconds or more, is in fact dangerous and can exacerbate lower back and hamstring injuries. You should never allow the treadmill belt to “pull” your legs underneath you as you run, and instead, you should always be in control of your running form.”

image courtsy peloton

For beginners who might be new to running, or specifically to running on a treadmill, Gentry offers a few tips:

“Be humble and remember that with patience comes progress. You have to repeat workouts a few times a week, over a 3-4 week period to start to see or feel changes in yourself. Peloton’s Walk + Run content is a fabulous class format to segue into running for longer durations than you may have done before and they are a great reminder of efficient running form throughout.”

One common criticism of running on a treadmill vs outdoors is the pressure it can put on the knees. To avoid any injuries, says Gentry, “it’s important to run with correct form and within your limits, take time to rest and recover, and include strength training and stretching into your routine. All of these combined show that running can actually strengthen bones, including the knees. Also, ensuring you are wearing trainers which have been designed for running in is a big element people forget to address.”

Gentry recommends supplementing treadmill running with strength and core exercises, and insists that runners spend a few minutes warming up and cooling down before and after workouts. “Revving your engine up before your workout and getting it to come back to its happy place after will benefit longevity of training.”

The U.S. Election Is Over—So What Do We Stress About Now?

For one thing: ‘The Bachelorette’

On November 7, it was announced that Joe Biden—the Democratic nominee—will be the next President of the United States. After a long election campaign and an even longer election week (seriously, it felt like it would *never* end), Americans and Canadians could finally, with this announcement, turn off the episodes of Schitt’s Creek they’d been obsessively binge-watching, put down their meditation apps and breathe a sigh of relief. Because finally, the 2020 election cycle is over. (Or at least the actual election is over; it remains to be seen how the transition of power from current President Donald Trump to President-elect Biden will go, but one can only assume it’ll be stressful as hell for everyone.)

But with the biggest, most stressful question answered, we’re left wondering: What do we obsessively stress out about now? There are, of course, still many serious global issues to be concerned about—take for instance, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, inequality, racism, not to mention what’s actually to come for the United States with this new presidency. But for many, the 2020 election cycle occupied a large chunk of our thoughts for a large period of time—and we’re kind of ready to fill that with some way less important drama  Luckily, there’s no shortage trending topics in pop culture that we can turn our attention to.

Read on to find out all the other topics we can dissect at the dinner table, from the current season of The Bachelorette to why Country Strong is a seminal film that 10 years later is still overlooked.

Who will Tayshia will pick on The Bachelorette? (Related: How long will Clare and Dale’s relationship last?)

Looking for something to occupy a large chunk of your brain space, keep you up at night *and* cause you to perpetually feel like you want to scream into the void? Look no further than The Bachelor franchise. The hit reality TV series is stressful at the best of times, and the latest season of The Bachelorette—which started out with Bachelor alum Clare Crawley as the lead, before she ducked out 12 days into her “journey” and was replaced with Tayshia Adams—is bonkers stressful. First of all, the logistics of how they managed to replace Crawley—with Adams having to quarantine for two weeks before coming on to the show—are murky at best. If the show had *no* idea Crawley was going to fall in love within a fortnight and want to leave the show, why would they have had Adams on standby quarantining for the exact same amount of time? Sketchy.

Not to mention the fact that now—almost a month since the show’s premiere—Adams has less than the already tight timeline of two months to meet her future husband, fall in love and get engaged! That is a crunch that I would rather not be a part of.

And finally, what about the fact that Crawley and her final contestant Dale Moss got engaged after knowing each other IRL for *literally* less than two weeks, with Crawley telling host Chris Harrison that she already felt a connection to her future husband before the show, via his Instagram profile? That is absolute madness! No one’s Instagram profile is *that* good except Michael B. Jordan’s, and that is a fact!! While I’m ultimately rooting for Crawley and Moss, predicting whether or not their relationship will last as long as the season airs is seriously stress-inducing.

The latest Telfar bag drop

Missed the latest Telfar bag drop? You’re 100% not alone and you’ll probably miss the next drop as well. These hip AF bags—designed by Telafar Clemens—sell out in mere minutes anytime they hit the interwebs, thanks in part to celeb support, with the bag spotted on the arms of stars like Solange Knowles, Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez. Because of this, as well as its accessible price point for a luxury bag, despite people waiting with bated breath to snap one up, doing so is *almost* impossible. You’d honestly have an easier time snagging something from an Adidas x Ivy Park drop.

In early November, Oprah co-signed the popularity of the bag, adding it to her 2020 Oprah’s Favorite Things holiday list on Amazon. The bag has already sold out on the online retailer. Telfar has yet to announce it’s next drop of bags, but you can be sure we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for it.

Drake’s impending Certified Lover Boy album release

Because we need good music to get us through this trying period of time (the aforementioned pandemic, global warming and the like), the fact that Drake has delayed his upcoming album, Certified Lover Boy, until January 2021 is *alarming* to say the least.

After being told we’d be getting a new album—as well as the accompanying heart-shaped merchandise—sometime in the summer, when that passed we were sure we’d be receiving the tunes on Drizzy’s October 24 birthday; because if there’s one thing to know about the rapper it’s that he is obsessed with his birthday. Everyday leading up to the rapper’s big day, I awoke anxiously, wondering if Drake had released the album overnight. And everyday I was once again disappointed. But alas, his birthday came, and with it, the official announcement that the album would be released in January 2020. But with the global COVID-19 pandemic ongoing, does this mean the latest January release date will also be pushed back à la Timothée Chalamet’s Dune? I will not survive!

The Goop holiday gift guide

Honestly, like anything actor Gwyneth Paltrow does, the 2020 holiday gift guide from her lifestyle brand Goop is just straight up hectic. A $38,000 bed? It’s enough to give anyone hives thinking about it; because we have so many questions, like: Who can afford an almost $40,000 bed? Do I have anyone in my life I even like enough to consider gifting them a bed this expensive? (The answer is no). And does a bed this expensive appreciate in value like a Rolex watch or Birkin handbag? (Answer: It freakin’ better.)

Whether or not Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn are actually married

Another piece of pop culture gossip to keep you awake at night? The relationship status of country music star Taylor Swift and her longtime beau, British actor Joe Alwyn. The couple, who have been together since 2016,  have had rumours swirling around their marital status for months, with fans speculating that lyrics on Swift’s albums Lover and Folklore are evidence that the pair have tied the knot. In Lover‘s song of the same name, Swift sings about wedding traditions, crooning: “I take this magnetic force of a man to be my lover/my heart’s been borrowed and yours has been blue,” with the past tense causing fans to speculate that they’re secretly hitched.

And I’m sorry, but I *need* to know their official relationship status. This is critical info.

Whatever the heck happened with Hillsong pastor Carl Lentz?

On November 4, Hillsong Church—the über hip celeb church attended by Hailey and Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez—announced that pastor Carl Lentz was being let go. In a statement on the church’s website, founder and Global Pastor Brian Houston revealed that Lentz had been fired after discussions around “leadership issues and breaches of trust, plus a recent revelation of moral failures.” It’s a vague as hell statement, which obviously means it’s 100% peaking my interest. Because, what does “moral failures” even mean? (Definitely infidelity.) Luckily, we didn’t have to wait long to find out. On November 5, Lentz took to his Instagram account to confirm he cheated on his wife.

“I was unfaithful in my marriage, the most important relationship in my life and held accountable for that,” Lentz wrote alongside a photo of his family. “This failure is on me, and me alone and I take full responsibility for my actions.”

View this post on Instagram

Our time at HillsongNYC has come to an end. This is a hard ending to what has been the most amazing, impacting and special chapter of our lives. Leading this church has been an honor in every sense of the word and it is impossible to articulate how much we have loved and will always love the amazing people in this church. When you accept the calling of being a pastor, you must live in such a way that it honors the mandate. That it honors the church, and that it honors God. When that does not happen, a change needs to be made and has been made in this case to ensure that standard is upheld. Laura and I and our amazing children have given all that we have to serve and build this church and over the years I did not do an adequate job of protecting my own spirit, refilling my own soul and reaching out for the readily available help that is available. When you lead out of an empty place, you make choices that have real and painful consequences. I was unfaithful in my marriage, the most important relationship in my life and held accountable for that. This failure is on me, and me alone and I take full responsibility for my actions. I now begin a journey of rebuilding trust with my wife, Laura and my children and taking real time to work on and heal my own life and seek out the help that I need. I am deeply sorry for breaking the trust of many people who we have loved serving and understand that this news can be very hard and confusing for people to hear and process. I would have liked to say this with my voice, to you, in person because you are owed that. But that opportunity I will not have. So to those people, I pray you can forgive me and that over time I can live a life where trust is earned again. To our pastors Brian and Bobbie, thank you for allowing us to lead, allowing us to thrive and giving us room to have a voice that you have never stifled or tried to silence. Thank you for your grace and kindness especially in this season, as you have done so much to protect and love us through this. We, the Lentz family, don’t know what this next chapter will look like, but we will walk into it together very hopeful and grateful for the grace of God..

A post shared by Carl Lentz (@carllentz) on

Since Lentz’s post, rumours have swirled online regarding his infidelity, primarily whether he’d been unfaithful with multiple women and whether or not the church knew about his infidelity for a long period of time before taking action. So, what happens next? Will Lentz make a comeback as the founder of a rival celeb church, similar to the Hype House and Sway House beef on TikTok? Will Lentz’s wife choose to stay with him? What do Justin and Hailey think of all of this?!

Why Country Strong isn’t as appreciated as it should be

For every time I drag Gwyneth Paltrow I must also praise for her for the seminal 2010 film Country Strong. A film about semi-washed up country music star Kelly Canter (played by Paltrow) trying to make a comeback after personal tragedy, it includes the trifecta of great filmmaking: people unironically wearing cowboy hats, singing and Garrett Hedlund. Plus, Leighton Meester and Hedlund play lovers who sing to each other. Despite all of this, the film remains overlooked by critics, relegated to being a shame-watch on Friday night in quarantine. Which is honestly uncalled for and straight up wrong! When will this film see justice and potentially a belated Oscar nomination?!

Do You Keep the Morning-After Pill at Home? If So, Make Sure You Know the Expiration Date

Morning after pill

Because the morning-after pill is most effective when taken right after unprotected sex, it’s not a bad idea to keep a pack on hand. But Vandna Jerath, MD, FACOG, medical director at Optima Women’s Healthcare in Colorado, warns against stockpiling emergency contraception for one specific reason: the morning-after pill is not something you take on a regular basis, and it eventually expires.

Once the expiration date has passed, the morning-after pill is no longer guaranteed to work as intended. “Expiration dates are designed to reflect the time period in which the medication retains its strength, quality, and purity, providing the medication is stored properly,” Sierra Richard, PharmD, a women’s health and pediatric clinical pharmacist, told POPSUGAR.

Dr. Richard went on to explain that the further out from the expiration date you get, “the less effective the medication will be, lowering your chance of preventing pregnancy.” She added that the pill’s efficacy can drop even further the longer you wait to take it after having unprotected sex.

While the morning-after pill can have a shelf life of three to five years, it’s important that you store it properly during that time. Dr. Jerath advises against storing medications of any kind in areas with high humidity, which can render the ingredients less effective. “Stray away from bathrooms where steamy showers are present; humidity should be avoided,” Dr. Jerath told POPSUGAR. “Ideally, a dry drawer or cabinet at room temperature would be the right place.”

To make sure you never find yourself stuck with an expired pill in an emergency, Dr. Richard recommends cleaning out your (dry and cool) medicine cabinet every three to six months and setting a reminder in your phone to throw out medications when they’re near expiring.

The Princess Switch Sequel: Everything We Know

In any other year, the news that Vanessa Hudgens will potentially play four lookalike characters in the same Netflix Christmas movie would stun me. But in 2020, a third movie in the identity-swapping Princess Switch franchise just makes sense. Netflix announced The Princess Switch: Switched Again, a sequel to the original 2018 film, will drop on November 19. The streaming service also confirmed the movies will follow in A Christmas Prince‘s footsteps to become a trilogy.

Just ahead of the sequel’s release, one of several holiday films coming from Netflix this year, a new trailer introduces us to Hudgens’ brand-new role. Ahead, everything we know about the wild movie and which doppelgänger we’re meeting next.

The first festively insane trailer is here.

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

A first look at The Princess Switch: Switched Again takes place two years after the original movie. Baker Stacy DeNovo is happily married to Prince Edward, while the long-distance relationship between Duchess Margaret Delacourt and Kevin has fizzled. Sounds simple enough. But things get complicated when Stacy, Edward, and (surprise!) Kevin travel to the fictional Montenaro for Margaret’s coronation. Margaret is too busy juggling new love interest Antonio and prepping for her big day to talk to Kevin about their split. Thus, she and Stacy decide to switch once more.

And if the logistics of their switch weren’t fuzzy enough, Margaret’s party girl cousin Fiona enters the fold. Lady Fiona is blonde, brash, and gives Hudgens another chance to flex her British accent. The movie’s plot is reminiscent of the first, which saw the identical Margaret and Stacy switch places and find love while living out each other’s daily routines. It’s unclear just how Fiona will factor into the second switcheroo.

Most of the cast is returning—with one major addition.

Sam Palladio (Nashville) and Nick Sagar (Shadowhunters) are returning as the franchise’s love interests Edward and Kevin, respectively. They’re joined by the mysterious Antonio (Lachlan Nieboer), who is vying for Margaret’s heart after her breakup with Kevin.

A third movie is on the way.

This will be the third year in a row that Hudgens has headlined a Netflix holiday film, following 2018’s The Princess Switch and last year’s The Knight Before Christmas. Production on the untitled third Princess Switch movie will begin in Scotland later this year and air in 2021, per Entertainment Tonight.

For those keeping track at home (just me?), this news means Hudgens will have been in as many Princess Switch movies as High School Musical releases. A new era is upon us, starting on November 19.

5 Ways This Beauty Director Is Preparing For Her Wedding

Prepping for a wedding is stressful enough to begin with, but if you’re a bride who has to plan the event during this year’s lockdown…well, Beauty Director Chloe Hall understands exactly what you’re going through. “It has been such a roller coaster of emotions,” says Hall, who with her fiancé, decided in the end to push her wedding date to next year. She says that doing so switched up her priorities in a positive way. “It has been helpful to ground and remind myself that the sole purpose of this wedding is to celebrate the love my fiancé and I have for each other,” Hall says. “And not get caught up in the details.”

She has now shifted her checklist away from table settings and itineraries to self-care and beauty rituals. If you’re looking for ways to recenter your body, mind, and spirit while prepping for your big day, Hall has a few suggestions.

Find a Fitness Routine That Works For You

Hall’s fitness routine centers around balance. “I still want to feel good in my dress, but that also comes with making healthier decisions and not putting so much pressure on myself,” she says. Her workouts include a mix of morning runs (with the Nike Run app), 305 Fitness cardio classes, and Yoga with Adriene.

Hall is big believer in finding a workout that works for you. “I like the balance between high and low intensity workouts,” she says. “It feels a lot more natural than failing at bridal bootcamp workouts!”

Complement Your Workouts With Emsculpt Neo

Hall believes the Emsculpt Neo has complemented the visible results of her workout. The in-office treatment involves high-intensity electromagnetic energy and radio frequency heat that, according to the brand, helps eliminate fat and builds muscle. “Radio frequency is what targets the fat and heats it up, which actually kills the fat cells,” says New York City-based dermatologist David Goldberg, M.D. “Once you kill the fat cells, they don’t come back.” (Maintaining a healthy diet can help keep them from being replaced.)

The treatment is done in-office, where a technician places a large applicator on your target area. It takes about 30 minutes from start to finish and a full treatment cycle consists of four weekly treatments.

“Once you kill the fat cells, they don’t come back.” — David Goldberg, M.D.

Hall had tried the original Emsculpt, but says she likes the Emsculpt Neo even better. “That’s no shade at all to the original treatment,” says Hall. “I just really liked the added heat.” While the original Emsculpt device focused solely on toning muscles, the new, radio frequency heat component of the Emsculpt Neo provides a more well-rounded approach that also kills fat cells, according to the brand.

“If you’re holding onto a little stubborn abdominal fat, which tends to be most of us, you’d be a good candidate for the Emsculpt Neo because of its ability to simultaneously tone muscle and melt fat,” says dermatologist Melanie Palm, M.D., who helped evaluate the product during its development stages. “Because the original Emsculpt doesn’t have the ‘fat-melting’ technology, people who are already in really good shape or are using it for maintenance are better candidates for that device.”

Hall goes on to say that the Emsculpt Neo treatment feels like an intense stretch or crunch. “The 30 minutes went by really quickly,” she says.

If you want to try Emsculpt Neo prior to your big event, schedule your appointments far in advanced to see optimal results. According to a clinical trial (which was presented at this year’s American Society for Dermatologic Surgery meeting—a series of virtual sessions discussing advances in the field) 40 of the 48 people who tested the product showed what the brand considers “optimal results” in three months. “Across all the studies we’ve done with Emsculpt Neo, the results have been very consistent—there was a 30% increase in fat loss, 25% increase of muscle tone, and some even showed a 5 to 7 centimeter loss in waist circumference, which can be a dress size or two,” says Dr. Palm.

Edit Your Skincare to Priority Products and Treatments

Hall’s pre-wedding routine is based on just four mainstays—the Dr. Barbara Sturm Cleanser, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, and a vitamin C serum by SkinCeuticals—with good reason. “I’m trying to keep it really simple because I’ve been the queen of maskne lately,” she says. While her wedding isn’t until next year (and hopefully mask-free!) paring down your skincare routine is generally a good idea to avoid breakouts or irritation prior a big event.

To up her glow prior to her big day, she uses retinol by SkinCeuticals weekly, and plans to get a chemical peel closer to the event. “I have some hyperpigmentation and dark spots,” she says. “They’re subtle and mostly on the sides of my face, so I want to get a chemical peel to address those before my wedding.”

If you are looking to get a peel before your big day you need to schedule it properly warns James Y. Wang, M.D., Los Angeles-based dermatologist and founder of Metropolis Skin warns. “A general rule of thumb for achieving your best glow for that anticipated day is to have a superficial peel two weeks prior to ensure that any redness, discoloration, or peeling subsides.” he says. “It may be wise to trial a peel ahead of time to know exactly how your skin responds.”

Start Your Hair Prep (Far) In Advance

Planning out your hairstyle in advance not only ensures it will look its best, but guarantees your strands will be thoroughly prepped for any heat styling you decide to do on the big day. Hall isn’t decided yet on her wedding hairstyle, but is already strengthening her hair in preparation. “I’ve been doing a lot of hair masks and treatments with the Ankh Monarch Hair Oil.” Both masks and treatments can up the moisture in your hair, making it feel more resilient and look stronger. “I think I want to have big wedding weekend hair, so it’s really important that I make sure my hair is really healthy in order to take the potential heat styling.”

Meditate Often

Hall starts each morning with a meditation session using the Headspace app. “I’ve been really focused on my mental health,” she says. “I’m working on meditating every day.” Her fiancé and pug often join her for this moment of calm.

By beginning her busy days in a calmer state, Hall finds it easier to appreciate the small moments of joy between hectic deadlines and back-to-back meetings. “Self-care can be done in so many different ways,” she says. “Even things like sitting outside with a cup of tea and listening to the birds can be so relaxing and nice for my mental health.”

Fashion Entrepreneur Inder Bedi Launches New Sustainability-Focused Brand, 457 Anew

Photography courtesy of 457 Anew.

The Montreal-born label uses upcycled, recycled and renewable materials.

Inder Bedi, founder of vegan accessory label Matt & Nat, has returned to the fashion space with a new vision based in part around things that are old. Upon leaving the brand he founded 25 years ago, Bedi says many people urged him to focus on the types of product he was known for introducing to the mainstream market – items that used vegan leather fabrications and had a decidedly contemporary feel. Instead, he came to the conclusion that he wanted to conceive of a line that would focus on a more holistic approach to ethical fashion from start to finish. Enter 457 Anew, Bedi’s Montreal-based venture that offers elevated everyday wares including bags, knits and outerwear crafted from textiles like Econyl (fabricated from nylon waste such as fishing nets), scrapped seatbelts from the automotive and aviation industries, and Desserto’s innovative leather made from cactus leaves.

“I thought, how can we produce products that will last a very long time in terms of the durability and the aesthetic, and where can I focus in terms of reusing materials that, if we don’t use them, will end up in a landfill,” says Bedi of the assortment of goods, which in addition to being available on the brand’s website have also found an exclusive home with Canadian retail icon, Simons.

The name 457 Anew riffs off the not only the idea of making something old new again, but also on a trio of numbers that have great significance to Bedi. “As I was researching the whole concept and looking for landfill materials and local producers – some of whom have been around for decades – this number just kept appearing,” he recalls. “Invoice numbers, an address I was going to….” Bedi says that he grew up around numerology thanks to his Hindu mother, and was intrigued to discover that when combined, the numbers “defined a spiritual path.” The numbers also represent the years that his children were born–2004, 2005, 2007. “They’re definitely a big part of my inspiration,” he adds about his new forward-looking endeavour.

As well as focusing on materials both novel and disused, Bedi says that an integral component to founding 457 Anew centered around local production. “Not a lot of people know this, but when I started Matt & Nat, I had a small factory in Montreal and we produced everything locally for the first six or seven years,” he notes.

As the brand grew, though, production was taken overseas. And after departing from that first foray into the fashion business, Bedi could look back on what wants and needs were integral to starting something different. “Let’s work with people who are artisans, who are tailors, who are sewers, to make sure that passion comes through in the product,” he notes of the craftspeople involved in bringing the 457 Anew line to life.

Bedi adds that there was a “fair amount of research involved to align myself with people who could do the type of work that was needed” – he was actually visiting scrapyards himself while in the ideation process to collect potential materials for use. And there was also a lot of trial-and-error in devising how to best use these upcycled components. “Figuring out how to properly stitch a seatbelt – this might sound ridiculous, but it took months,” he says. “[They’re] made to save people’s lives, so they’re tough.”

Given the nature of the materials being used in 457 Anew’s pieces, whether discarded or bio-fabricated, one has to wonder where Bedi sees the brand going; that is, how can building a sustainably-focused brand be scaled in a way that as many consumers who want to invest in such products can? But in talking to him, it’s clear that staying in the sphere of small-batch manufacturing actually speaks to not only his brand’s philosophy, but also where he hopes to see the fashion industry as a whole headed as well.

Highlighting that the current WFH circumstances of many people has shed light on just how much we were consuming needlessly before, Bedi says that part of the ethos of 457 Anew is about “getting [consumers] into a mindset that we don’t need so many coats, bags, knits. We just need the ones that speak to us. [It’s about] trying to get people to have that perspective.”

The brand’s timeless, minimalist vibe certainly speaks to this concept, and so does its partnership with the Montreal’s homeless and at-risk youth organization, Dans La Rue. 457 Anew’s ‘Last Beyond You’ program is set up to provide Dans La Rue with upcycled wares created from previously used pieces that consumers return after a certain timeline (and they’ll also receive a 25 per cent credit towards a new 457 Anew purchase).

Bedi says that he knows a start-up label such as his has the luxury of implementing such vanguard measures, from this give-back angle to the materials that goes into his products. But above anything else, his hopefulness that these actions will spur on more change, particularly within existing fashion brands, is palpable. And a hopeful attitude is not only key to building a business, but also for the sustenance of humanity as well.

6 Takeaways From a Historic Election Weekend

Shortly before noon EST on Saturday, history was made when Pennsylvania—and its 20 electoral college votes—was called for Joe Biden, pushing him over the 270 electoral college votes needed to beat the sitting president, Donald Trump. Celebrations ensued across the United States, and the world, with jubilant Biden supporters dancing, singing and popping bottles of champagne on the streets. (These celebrations occurred alongside ongoing, baseless claims of voter fraud.) The Democratic Party’s win was a salve for many following an incredibly difficult year, and it was also incredibly historic on multiple fronts. Here, six takeaways from this monumental victory.

Kamala Harris becomes the first female and first woman of colour vice president

“While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities,” Vice President-elect Kamala Harris said in her victory speech on Saturday night in Wilmington, Delaware. She was dressed in all white—honouring women’s rights activism—and also spoke about her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, who came to the U.S. from India when she was 19, and the generations of Black, brown, Asian, white, Latino and Native American women who “paved the way for this moment tonight.”

President-elect Joe Biden becomes the first candidate to unseat an incumbent in 28 years

The last presidential candidate to do so was Bill Clinton, who beat Republican President George H.W. Bush in 1992, then held on to the job for two terms.

Throughout U.S. history, only eight other incumbent presidents have lost their re-election bids: Jimmy Carter (D), Gerald Ford (R), Herbert Hoover (R), William Howard Taft (R), Benjamin Harrison (R), Martin Van Buren (D), John Quincy Adams (Whig) and John Adams (Federalist).

Senate control remains undecided

The Democrats need 50 seats to control the Senate; following the election, the Republican and Democrats each hold 48 senate seats, with no party likely to take control until a runoff election for two seats is held in Georgia on January 5, 2021. (A runoff occurs when no candidate earns enough votes to clear a state-mandated percentage for victory.)

The New York Times has proclaimed the southern state—which typically runs Republican—“a new political battleground” after Biden eked out a narrow lead there that is headed for a recount. The state has not sent a Democrat to Senate in two decades, and much of the Dems’ newfound success there has been credited to Stacey Abrams—who ran for governor in 2018, lost by a narrow margin and became a staunch advocate against voter suppression.

Trump has not conceded

To be clear, the current POTUS does not need to concede in order for Biden to become president on January 20, 2021—but doing so is the standard, and not to mention, the decent thing to do. However, as of Sunday afternoon, Trump has made no move to admit defeat, although CNN reports that his son-in-law Jared Kushner has broached the topic. (The White House disputes this report, but if it’s true, what we wouldn’t give to witness that conversation.)

Instead, since the election was called for Biden on Saturday, Trump has issued a series of petulant tweets that allege election fraud—with absolutely zero proof—most of which have been flagged by Twitter for misinformation.

In an official statement following the Biden call, Trump maintains (incorrectly!) that the election has not been won, and says that on Monday his team will “will start prosecuting our case in court to ensure election laws are fully upheld and the rightful winner is seated.”

To that end, on Saturday afternoon, Rudy Giuliani—Trump’s personal lawyer—stood in front of a podium in Philadelphia to discuss alleged examples of voter fraud in the state. The event quickly went viral—though not for reasons that the Trump camp had hoped. Instead, it was the location of Giuliani’s speech—the parking lot of Four Seasons Total Landscaping, a Philly business which is adjacent to an adult bookstore and crematorium—that drew the most attention, as many assumed the event was incorrectly booked, and that the campaign meant to reserve the swanky Four Seasons hotel in downtown Philadelphia. (The New York Times says the landscaping business, “in a friendlier part” of the predominantly Democratic town, was always the intended venue.)

Biden’s Day One promises

Biden’s transition website, buildbackbetter.com, lists four immediate priorities: COVID-19, economic recovery, racial equity, and climate change.

After he takes the oath of office, Biden says that the United States will rejoin the Paris climate accord. (The U.S. officially withdrew from the global agreement on climate change action on November 4.) Christiana Figueres, a key architect of the accord, was shown on Twitter jumping up and down over the news of Biden’s win.

Biden also has his work cut out for him on getting COVID-19 under control—the disease is currently surging in the U.S., which saw a record 132,790 new cases on Friday. In his victory speech on Saturday, Biden said that as of Monday, he’ll “name a group of leading scientists and experts as transition advisors to help take the Biden-Harris COVID plan and convert it into an action blueprint that will start on January 20, 2021. That plan will be built on bedrock science. It will be constructed out of compassion, empathy and concern. I will spare no effort—none—or any commitment to turn around this pandemic.”

And, generally, the last part of January is looking pretty packed for Biden: the Washington Post has a rundown of other executive orders the new president reportedly plans to sign shortly after inauguration, including reversing “Trump’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization,” repealing “the ban on almost all travel from some Muslim-majority countries,” and reinstating “the program allowing ‘dreamers,’ who were brought to the United States illegally as children, to remain in the country.”

What Biden and Harris’ victory means for Canada

Obviously, Biden will be a more predictable president, and the new administration promises to have a closer, less-fraught relationship with the Canadian government. And, as Edward Keenan points out in the Toronto Star, Biden’s win is a hopeful sign for Canadian politics, as “the nationalism, populism and misinformation tactics of Trump’s campaigns and government will look less attractive to Canadian politicians now that they’ve been defeated—for now, anyway.”

Biden has also promised to stop the Keystone XL pipeline, which would carry crude oil from Alberta to refineries in the U.S. Gulf Coast. And, while the United States remains Canada’s top trading partner, Biden has vowed to ensure “the future is made in all of America,” which could concern Canadian manufacturers. If Biden is successful at curbing the coronavirus, border restrictions could ease.

And, as Keenan writes in the Star, the Biden administration will likely also have a positive effect on treatment of asylum seekers in the U.S.—which will also impact Canada: “The Trump administration’s treatment of asylum seekers led to a flood of irregular refugees at the Canadian border, and to the Supreme Court ruling our pact with the U.S. on refugees unconstitutional. Biden’s promises to accept more asylum seekers and dramatically overhaul treatment offer the prospect of a partnership on refugee policy we may be able to live with.”

Yes, You Heard Correctly—That’s Nicole Kidman Singing The Undoing Opening Credits

If you need the dulcet tones of an Australian Academy Award winner to soothe your 2020-frayed nerves, might I suggest a subscription to HBO and a few moments spent watching The Undoing? I’ll admit the accompanying murder mystery might not be the best prescription for your spiking anxiety levels, but the show does feature a lovely little ditty known as “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” sung by the one and only Nicole Kidman, in the opening credits.

Kidman, who plays the show’s protagonist, Upper East Side therapist Grace Fraser, seems to know that the only cure for seasonal affective disorder is to feature on more tracks, as she’ll also be singing in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming Netflix movie-musical The Prom. If you remember her time on the Moulin Rouge! stage, she does indeed know her major from her minor, though she doubts herself frequently: She told Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 show her voice is “not good.”

Apparently husband (and fellow Aussie) Keith Urban convinced her otherwise. Kidman told Ball: “We were in lockdown; we were in Tennessee in Nashville and the director [Susanne Bier] sent me a text going, ‘Would you sing the title track, “Dream a Little Dream,” for the series?’ I was like, ‘What? No, I so don’t want to do that, my voice is not good,’ which is always my reaction, and she said, ‘No, no, I think you can sing it.’”

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Undeterred, Urban brought her into their at-home recording studio—as one does—to work with her on the piece, and Kidman says, “We laid it down and sent it in, and they mixed it so it ended up in the series… I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing.”

In a video for HBO, Kidman elaborated on the story, saying Bier told her she “had to do it.” So she gave in. Nicole, you’re doing 2020 right.

5 Easy Ways to Make Your Hair Grow Faster

cher portrait session

Harry LangdonGetty Images

During a recent late-night Instagram deep dive I found myself on a Cher stan account. That night, I dreamed I had the singer’s dark, impossibly long glossy locks. The only problem? When I woke up, my hair reality was much, much shorter.

So I took my dream to the experts and consulted Sarah Roberts, tricologist and author of You and Your Hair: The Ultimate Healthy Hair Masterclass for Afro Textured Hair, and Lisa Caddy, trichologist at Philip Kingsley, on their most important tips on how make my hair grow faster. Before you know it, I’ll be dancing to “I Got You Babe” with waist-length hair of my very own.

It all starts at the scalp

“Our scalp is the birthplace of our hair, says Roberts. “Understanding the basic health that we need to ensure to have a healthy scalp is vital to having healthy hair.” Caddy agrees, adding “Dead skin cells, sebum, sweat, bacteria, odors and pollution all accumulate on the scalp which can cause underlying inflammation and flaking. Addressing flaky scalp conditions such as dandruff, eczema and psoriasis will provide a healthier scalp environment which in turn optimizes hair growth and health.”

A healthy scalp = healthy hair. “Think about the scalp as a flower bed,” Caddy says. “If you neglect it, dump rubbish on it, never clean it out then you’ll never grow the prettiest and most vibrant, healthy flowers!”

Don’t rule out hot tools

We’ve all heard the overheating horror stories, but if we’re being realistic, sometimes you just want to use a straightener or a curling iron. Fear not, that’s where heat protectant products come in to play. These products coat your strands with mirror-like ingredients that protect your hair from the damage that comes along with styling. But Roberts adds, “This [heat] damage is irreversible,” so proceed with caution.

Hair supplements actually work

“Some supplements can be beneficial to give hair a boost, especially if we feel that our diet isn’t 100 percent,” Caddy says, warning that hair loss isn’t always caused by a nutritional issue. “A good supplement targeted for hair will contain vitamins and minerals such as iron, B12, vitamin D, biotin etc, which if you happen to be deficient in, can cause hair shedding.”

Invest in protecting your hair

That goes beyond just a heat protectant! We’re talking about oils, masks, pillow cases, wraps, and more—all of these strand-coddling products will help your hair grow faster and stronger.

Snowboarder Chloe Kim on Hot Cheetos, Roxy, and Going for Gold (Again) at the 2022 Winter Olympics

Chloe Kim is America’s relatable sweetheart. It wasn’t her 2018 Olympic gold medal or the fact that she became the youngest female winner in snowboarding history at 17 years old but her overall demeanor that won our hearts. A ball of sunshine with really good hair, Kim became the face of the sport and showed how “like us” a winner can be, tweeting about ice cream and churros between Olympic runs.

The whirlwind media circus that followed her win has since quieted down and she spent the last year as a freshman at Princeton University. Now 20 years old, she’s stays relatable. The 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing has not yet been affected by COVID-19, so her training is still on course. In the meantime, she’s spending quarantine at home in Los Angeles with her boyfriend, binge-watching Netflix, and wearing sweatpants.

We spoke to Kim about her gig as the face of Roxy (“I’ve always loved Roxy’s stuff”), Asian American representation, and a snowboarder’s hairstyle with a NSFW name. Read on for more.

How does your style on the mountain translate to your IRL style?

I am a big LA girl. I love fashion. I love like picking out fun outfits and really expressing myself through what I wear. I feel like now when I go out, it’s mostly to go get groceries or go run some errands and then I run back into my apartment, to my safe zone. So I’ve definitely been doing a lot of chilling in sweatpants, but I’ll throw on an occasional fit for an Insta pic right outside and then I’ll run back inside.

What made you want to partner with Roxy?

I grew up idolizing Torah Bright. She was actually one of those athletes that really inspired me to go to the Olympics because I watched her compete in 2006. When I got the opportunity to join the [same] team it honestly is probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’ve been loving Roxy t-shirt dresses lately to wear around the house—they’re so cozy. I’m just trying to be comfy while I binge-watch some Netflix.

What are you watching right now?

When quarantine first started and we were all really, really scared, we never went outside. So we rewatched Avatar: The Last Airbender. Then we rewatched Stranger Things. I’ve been watching The Blacklist. And right now I’m watching New Girl. To put it in perspective, I’m almost done with season one and I started yesterday. My boyfriend’s taking his midterms right now, so I literally have nothing to do. So yeah, I’ve just been watching Netflix and playing 8 Ball Pool on my phone.

As someone who spends a lot of time in the cold, do you have any beauty tips for people struggling with dry skin?

I moisturize five times a day. It’s crazy because the minute I leave for the mountain, I just feel my skin just starting to shrivel. I’ll actually bring a really light water-based serum with me in my bag that I’ll just throw on whenever my skin starts feeling dry. I’m using one from Tatcha right now that I love. A good cleanser at night is also important and I do a lot of exfoliating. I try to exfoliate four times a week because my skin gets so dry. We deal with wind burn, so you have so many dead skin cells on your face just from the wind being so harsh. Sometimes I’ll throw on Aquaphor on my face, just to get something on there.

Let’s talk about snowboards tendrils, which is the style where you stick pieces of hair out outside of your helmet. What are your thoughts on it?

There’s actually a term for it in our community. I don’t even think you’re going to put this down, but everyone calls them ‘slut strands.’ When someone told me that, I was like, ‘No, they’re called beauty strands. Don’t slut-shame me for having hair out.’

Do you have any favorite memories from the post-Olympics whirlwind?

I think my favorite memory was just seeing my family after. My dad immigrated from Korea a while ago and he sacrificed so much to support me, help me pursue my dreams, and become an Olympian and Olympic gold medalist. Not only my dad, but my whole family came together and they worked so hard to support me and always be there for me. At the end after I had won, seeing them was just the best moment of my life. I was so happy. They were so happy. We did it. We were so excited. And then a lot of other cool things happened. I was in a Maroon 5 music video and I met Jimmy Fallon. I rapped with G-Eazy at the ESPYs, all of that cool stuff. But I think family was definitely at the top.

You took a sabbatical from snowboarding before you started college. What’s harder: training for the Olympics or freshman year?

Freshman year. I’ve just been snowboarding since I was four and when I came to school, I did all my school online. It was really hard for me to adapt and I still don’t think I’ve fully adapted yet. I’ve never really sat in a class during the lecture or taken an exam in a classroom with professors standing there. I didn’t really know how to take notes in a lecture.

But I think the hardest part for me was actually meeting people. I was scared because I felt like so many people knew things about me when I didn’t know anything about them and it kind of made me a little uneasy. There was a lot of going to the dean’s office and being like, “Hey, I’m struggling right now.” “I think someone knows where my room is.” “People are taking pictures of me when I’m eating. It’s making me really uncomfortable. Can we do something about it?” But after a while it kind of stopped happening. I was definitely pretty guarded when I met people for the first couple of weeks, but then I met my friends that I still talk to and I love to death and after that it went really well smoothly.

Since your rise to fame you’ve also become a role model for Asian Americans. How do you handle that responsibility?

I think I really struggled with that at first because I was really young when Asian American representative became part of my life. I think I was 16 when I started to feel that responsibility and I was like, “Damn, I don’t even know… I’m still trying to figure myself out. How am I supposed to handle this?” But I think for me, I should be making sure I’m a good person first before I think about being a big role model. I need to accept that I’m always going to make mistakes no matter what. I’m still learning. I just need to be the best version of myself I can possibly be, and just be a good example, always trying to do the right thing, making hard decisions and just trying to be a positive person for others.

2020 feels like the year of nervous energy. As someone that has been on one of the biggest world stages, do you have any advice for people dealing with anxiousness?

Keep your loved ones close. When I’m feeling anxious, the first person I call is my mom or my dad or my sisters. And I would just say, be there for your family, your friends, just support each other and get through this time together and hopefully 2021 is a better year for all of us. Stay positive. We’re going to manifest all the right things for 2021.

Has the postponement of 2020’s Summer Olympics changed the way you’re approaching training for Winter 2022?

It haven’t because my Olympics are still on track, but I’ve definitely changed my training a lot. Before my first Olympics, I didn’t really work out, went to CPK all the time, getting pizza, whatever I wanted. After the Olympics I went riding again and I fell and I was like, ‘That actually really hurt.’ You’re not 10 anymore where you’re a rubber ball and just bounce back up. You can’t do that. So I got a trainer and I feel so much stronger and so much more confident on a snowboard. But I’m trying not to think about it too much. There’s still a lot that happens before and I kind of want to go in with the same approach as I did with the last one: just chilling.

You mentioned CPK, which relates to my next question. You became a snack expert during the last Olympics. Do you had any new snacks that you found during quarantine?

I love hot Cheetos, but they have to be the lime ones. Those have been my addiction lately. I also love gum. I go through 10 packs of gum a week. But with the churro thing, the funny thing was, I said I liked it and then I come home and everyone’s giving me anything related to churros. I got frozen churros sent to me that you can throw in an oven for 10 minutes and they’re ready. I got churro chips, churro everything, and I was like, ‘Guys, I don’t think I like churros anymore. I don’t think that’s my thing anymore.’ But if I can get my hands on hands on some Flaming Hot Cheetos, I’d be down for that.

Next thing you know you’re going to get Hot Cheetos-flavored ice cream.

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle Opt For Black Coat Dresses to Mark Remembrance Sunday

Though on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean right now, sisters-in-law Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle both opted for a similar aesthetic to mark Remembrance Sunday over the weekend.

In London, the Duchess of Cambridge joined mother-in-law Camila, the Duchess of Cornwall and the Queen for the National Service of Remembrance at The Cenotaph in London. Camila and Kate stood on the same balcony (six feet apart) overlooking the monument which honours those who lost their lives in World War I and World War II. To mark the occasion, Kate wore a custom black Alexander McQueen coat with tassel details on the shoulders and adorned with three red poppies, paired with a Philip Treacy hat and diamond and pearl earrings reportedly borrowed from the Queen.

In Los Angeles, Meghan and Harry paid a visit to the Los Angeles National Cemetery where they laid flowers picked from their garden at the resting place of two Commonwealth soldiers – one who had served in the Royal Australian Air Force and another in the Royal Canadian Artillery. They also laid a wreath in front of an obelisk with the inscription: “In Memory of the Men Who Offered Their Lives in Defense of Their Country.” Harry wrote a personal message on the wreath which said, “To all of those who have served, and are serving. Thank you.” Meghan chose a black belted midi coat-dress from Brandon Maxwell for the outing, teamed with a single red poppy and heels by Jennifer Chamandi.

According a spokesperson, the pair wanted to be able to recognize Remembrance Day “in their own way.” It is a day that is particularly meaningful to Prince Harry who served in the armed forces for 10 years, including two tours of Afghanistan. The pair’s visit coincided with the release of a new episode of military podcast Declassified which featured Prince Harry. Speaking of Remembrance Day, the Duke of Sussex said, “Remembrance Day for me is a moment for respect and for hope. Respect for those who came before us and hope for a safer world. The act of remembering, of remembrance, is a profound act of honour. It’s how we preserve the legacies of entire generations and show our gratitude for the sacrifices they made in order for us to be able to live the lives we live today.”

Jennifer Lopez Says ‘It’s a New Day’ as She Celebrates the Biden Win in this Emotional Instagram Story

oprah's 2020 vision your life in focus tour with special guest jennifer lopez

While much of America took to the streets yesterday with their various noise-making items, celebratory shouts and screams, and creative signs, Jennifer Lopez took a moment to honor the emotional weight the historic Biden/Harris win had for our country.

“I’m just crying tears of joy,” Lopez said in the video, originally posted to her Instagram story, as the news played in the background. “I hope that we can all come together, love each other, and appreciate each other. It’s a new day. It is an amazing, amazing day. God bless, everybody.”

After she got all of her happy tears out, Lopez celebrated the day the best way she knows how: dancing. She posted this performance video with the caption, “SHMOOD! PRESIDENT BIDEN!!!!!!! VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS!!!!!!”

She, like many of us, celebrated yesterday with yummy food and drink at brunch. There is, it looks like, a rhinstone-studded monogrammed cocktail shaker in this photo, too.

On Saturday night, Kamala Harris gave a victory speech in which she addressed the women and girls of color in the U.S. who would be inspired by her win.

“But while I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last,” she said. “Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities, and to the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: Dream with ambition. Lead with conviction. And see yourselves in a way that others may not, simply because they’ve never seen it before, but know that we will applaud you every step of the way.”

For her part, Lopez has also been encouraging young Latina girls with her career and influence.

“I think it’s super important for two Latina women to be headlining the Super Bowl,” Lopez told the Los Angeles Times, ahead of her and Shakira’s performance earlier this year. “Especially right now in Trump’s America.”

Feel Overwhelmed by Anxiety? Try the Therapist-Approved Butterfly Tapping Technique

@mashmushe

Tip from. Therapist! Let me know if you will or have tried it #trauma #anxiety #learnontiktok #tiktokpartner

♬ LULLABY WALTZ – Marcel Coulomb

Stress and anxiety both have a way of piling up — and piling up fast. Therapist Micheline Maalouf, LMHC, NCC, uses her platform on TikTok (that has amassed over 700K followers) to give tangible tips for combating adverse effects to our mental health. One key way to help with anxiety and stress is a technique called “butterfly tapping,” or “butterfly hug,” that Maalouf demonstrates in the video above.

Basically, you place your hands, palms down, on your chest, interlocking your thumbs in a shape that resembles a butterfly. Then, you slowly tap one hand after the other near your shoulders (Maalouf followed up on Twitter to say that she’s tapping too quickly in the video because her hands “kept up” with her words). Keep your pace slow.

“It’s a bilateral stimulation technique [aka, alternating stimulation on both sides of the body] that helps us ground ourselves when we’re feeling anxious or panicky, or just need to calm down our bodies a little bit,” Maalouf explains in the video. She adds that it helps by activating our parasympathetic nervous system, which enacts digestion and slows down your heart rate, among other functions.

Maalouf further clarified in the TikTok comments that the technique itself comes from Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) typically used for treating trauma and that though she is not formally trained in EMDR, she’s had it done herself and butterfly tapping is soothing for her. She also said in the comments that if this technique does not work for you, you can try simply giving yourself a hug.

While we know that techniques like this aren’t a cure-all, the hope is that you can use it as a tool to cope with anxiety you may be experiencing today, next week, even months and years from now. Take a moment to test it out.

Jennifer Lawrence Celebrated Joe Biden’s Victory By Running Through the Streets of Boston in Her Pajamas

street style paris fashion week womenswear spring summer 2020 day two

Yesterday, cities across America erupted in joy after the news broke that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris would be the next president and vice president of the United States. Jennifer Lawrence very much caught on to the national celebratory energy: She ran into the streets of Boston in her pajamas while blasting Childish Gambino’s “This is America” on a portable speaker.

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Wow. Mood.

Last month, in an interview with the podcast Absolutely Not, Lawrence said she used to be a “little bit Republican” and that she used to align with Republicans on “fiscal matters” but disagreed on “social issues.”

“It’s extremely hard to talk about politics. You don’t want to. I’m an actor, I want everyone to see my movies,” Lawrence told the podcast’s host, Heather McMahan. “I grew up Republican. The first president, my first time voting, I voted for John McCain. I was a little Republican.”

She went on:

“I was fortunate to grow up in a Republican house, where I could see the fiscal benefits of some of the Republican policies, and I could also see that the social issues weren’t in line with my views. But then, for me, when Donald Trump got elected, that just changed everything….This is an impeached president who’s broken many laws and has refused to condemn white supremacy, and it feels like there’s been a line drawn in the sand, and I just, I don’t give a fuck. I guess that’s the bottom line.”
