FLARE Faves: Our Top Buys From November

Back when the FLARE team shared an IRL office space (RIP to my abandoned aloe plant…), my mornings looked a little something like this: rush to get up the elevators in time for our 8:30 a.m. daily meeting (for which, I admittedly showed up to at approx. 8:32 most days), hit the button on my Nespresso machine, roll my chair over to our meeting table and start discussing the trending news items of past 24 hours with my brilliant colleagues. We’d assign a new story or two, check in on the status of our scheduled posts for the day and then invariably our attention would turn to what new outfit, eyeliner or gadget one of us was debuting.

Since WFH became our new reality, there’s been less opportunity to share sale scores and new obsessions. For one, most of us put a hard stop on unnecessary shopping; and furthermore, we found ourselves wearing sweatsuits much of the week. But now that we’re settling into our “new normal” (and we’re opening up our wallets again) we decided to take our conversation online—like everything else right now—and a new series was born. In FLARE Faves, we’re sharing our top fashion, beauty and home buys from the past month.

Here, the best things we bought or were gifted in November.

Best tights

threads tights

Opaque Tights, $17 USD, yourthreads.co

I know what you’re thinking: “Pantyhose? In this economy??” And, trust me, I was right there with you. At the end of summer, when that first fall chill started to creep in, one of the pandemic silver linings I sold myself was: “Since I’m working from home indefinitely, at least I won’t be subjecting myself to the pure torture of wearing tights this winter.” Then I was introduced to Threads, courtesy of a lovely package of samples that showed up at my door. Skeptical, it took me a few weeks to actually try them, and I finally did when meeting a friend for a chilly patio lunch in early November. The temperature was hovering around zero but my legs actually stayed warm?? More surprising, these tights were so comfy (we’re talking no digging or rolling waistband, no sagging, no suffocating qualities whatsoever) that I didn’t immediately strip them off and change into sweatpants when I got home. Reader, I kid you not: I sat down on my couch in REAL clothes and watched Netflix. Mind. Blown.

Best balm

LXMI balm

LXMI Pure Nilotica Melt, $41, thedetoxmarket.ca

One of the other pandemic silver linings I’ve been taking advantage of is really upping my skincare routine, which over the past few months has included adding a new vitamin A serum to the mix. My sensitive skin always takes a little while to adjust to any new product—especially one with actives like retinol or AHAs—so I’ve been pampering it nightly with this luxurious balm-to-oil salve from LXMI, an organic skincare line that focuses on a singular star ingredient, Nilotica. A form of shea butter, Nilotica is intensely moisturizing, but doesn’t leave a shiny residue on my skin (blessings!). I slather this stuff on my face at night as an intensive sleeping mask, and have also used it as a lip balm, a cuticle treatment and a healing ointment for a bike-accident scar, which I swear looks like it’s healing faster already. Get you a balm that can do it all!

Best kitchen knife set

opinel knives

Opinel Kitchen Knife Essentials, $225, hopsongrace.com

I spied these French kitchen knives in my IG feed back in June and immediately saved them to my wish list. According to the team at Hopson Grace, which is one of my favourite spots in Toronto to browse for tableware and decor, Opinel knives are so renowned for their form and functionality that the Victoria & Albert Museum named them one of the 100 best designs of all time. Indeed, these beechwood beauties are a much-needed upgrade to my mismatched (and admittedly pretty dull) stainless steel set.

Best booties

la canadienne boots

Budapest Booties, $450, lacanadienneshoes.com

Photos simply don’t do these Chelsea boots justice. Between the pointed toe, the manageable heel height, the gold hardware and the subtle western details on the shaft, they’re the answer to my most enduring and elusive fashion want: a simple, yet interesting black leather bootie that will stand the test of time. And please don’t get me started on the unique heel shape—cool enough to feel special but not so wacky that it renders the boot less classic. They’re an investment, but one that’s Canadian-designed and Italian-made, and as beautifully constructed as this pair isn’t one you’ll likely regret. To me, they are perfect.

Best face oil

mutha oil

Face Oil, $110 USD, mutha.com

Yes, I absolutely wanted to try this buzzy brand after spotting it on Instagram and sites like The Cut, and now that they ship to Canada, we easily can. While it’s loaded with antioxidants, omega fatty acids, evening primrose oil, squalane and active ingredients like tsubaki, kalahari and borage seed oils to replenish the skin’s moisture, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and soothe the skin, this face oil’s true super power seems to be its uncanny ability to absorb quickly and leave you feeling dewy and glowy, but not shiny. The oil is naturally scented with jasmine flower extract, giving its application a lovely spa-like experience. I like to up the ritual aspect even more by applying the face oil before going in with my gua sha.

Best cozy throw

oui throw

Oui Chevron Chenille Throw, $59.50, chapters.indigo.ca

The intersection of pandemic lockdown number two and the threat of winter means a few things: a dramatic rise in homemade soups, an increased urge to improve one’s home base, and a spike in the need to be nestled in soft, comforting fabrics. Much like the frequency at which I google “best flannel sheets,” my cozy blanket collection has increased exponentially. This ridiculously cozy throw, that comes in the most soothing off-white shade, complete with a subtle chevron pattern and charming nubby bits, is my latest fave from Indigo’s newly launched home line, Oui.

Katherine’s picks

Best quilted jacket

uniqlo jacket

U Recycled Down Jacket, $100, uniqlo.com

I’m sorry, but I can’t be the only person who wants their entire life—and wardrobe—to reflect The Crown. While I may not be itching for a marriage like Prince Charles and Diana’s, I *am* itching for all of the Royal Family’s Balmoral hunting looks. And this newly released jacket from Uniqlo fits the bill. From the chic brown colour that I favour to the quilted design, this jacket screams for me to be atop a thoroughbred horse, galloping through the English countryside. (FYI, it also works over a sweatsuit for a Sunday coffee run.) Plus, as part of a sustainable initiative from the brand that started in September 2019, these jackets use down collected from around 620,000 unwanted Uniqlo jackets across Japan, repurposing older Uniqlo garments and making this purchase stylish and sustainable! Pro tip: The jacket is unisex, meaning that it runs a little larger. I’m typically a S and wear an XS in this item.

Best foundation

kosas foundation

Kosas Tinted Face Oil Foundation, $56, sephora.com

As someone with naturally oily skin, I was hesitant about trying out a face oil, but this light foundation provides the perfect amount of coverage for my daily Zoom calls and virtual meetings, camouflaging redness and dark spots while also still looking super natural. I don’t find it adds any extra oil to my face; and as a bonus, the brand really emphasizes makeup as an extension of your skincare routine, meaning their products, in addition to being sulphate-free, are packed with clean treatment ingredients like rosehip seed and avocado oil.

Best tequila

best tequila

1800 Anjeo Tequila, $51, lcbo.com

This isn’t your typical university-experience tequila. Whether you’re looking for a nice gift for your dad for the holidays or just want to treat yourself, a bottle of tequila *might* just be the best decision you make. This aged tequila is perfect for sipping (because that’s something I do now) with a spicy aroma and notes of caramel and toffee. Want to really warm yourself up this winter? Try it out in your evening cup of hot chocolate (with marshmallows, obvi). You won’t regret it.

Elham’s picks

Best puffer

uniqlo puffer

J+ Hybrid Down Jacket in Wine, $180, uniqlo.com

It hasn’t even gotten supremely cold yet, but I’ve still donned this jacket and felt uber warm and super snug. True, I’m not planning on going anywhere far for the next few weeks (abiding by lockdown rules over here!), but I still wanna feel cute. Plus, I’ll be using this jacket as an excuse to get my vitamin D-deficient self outdoors to see the light of day on some afternoon walks around the neighbourhood.

Best haircare kit

olaplex kit

Olaplex Holiday Hair Fix Kit, $80, sephora.com

I’ve been trying for a while now to find the right treatment to get my partially heat-damaged hair back on track and feeling revived again, so I picked up this holiday kit from Olaplex, which includes a minis of their beloved shampoo and conditioner, as well as pre-and post-shower strengthening and smoothing lotions. A few uses later I think it’s working quite nicely!

Best pillow

buckwheat pillow

Organic Buckwheat Hull Pillow, $109, comfycomfy.ca

I’ve been progressively upgrading my sleep game over the past year with a weighted blanket and new mattress but, honestly, this pillow is probably the biggest game-changer for me. I don’t wake up feeling like I got whiplash in my sleep anymore, and it’s all thanks to the buckwheat filling of this pillow. It’s firm enough that I don’t feel like I’m wrestling with my pillow, I never need to flip to the cool side since it doesn’t heat up, and I can shape the pillow to take whatever firmness I want. Bonus: It’s Canadian-made.

Moderna Seeks FDA Emergency Approval For COVID-19 Vaccine

On Nov. 30, Moderna announced it will submit a request to the US Food and Drug Administration as well as the European Medicines Agency to authorize its coronavirus vaccine for emergency use. The request came Monday after Moderna shared data showing that its vaccine is 94.1 percent effective and that its study of 30,000 people has met the scientific criteria necessary to prove its vaccine works. These findings are in line with previous data released on Nov. 16 showing the vaccine to be 94.5 percent effective. The data also shared that the vaccine was 100 percent effective at preventing severe cases of coronavirus.

According to Moderna, efficacy of the vaccine was consistent across age, race and ethnicity, and gender demographics. The company continues to monitor safety data, but since Nov. 16 when it shared that the only concerns were mild side effects including pain or redness at the injection site, fatigue, fever, muscle and joint pain, and headaches, no new serious safety concerns have been identified.

According to a New York Times interview with Stéphane Bancel, Moderna’s chief executive, if authorization is granted, the first shots could be administered as early as Dec. 21. Bancel said the company was “on track” to produce 20 million doses by the end of December and 500 million to a billion in 2021. Since both vaccines require two shots, 20 million doses would be enough for 10 million people.

Moderna is just behind Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech, which over a week ago asked FDA regulators to approve their COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use in the US. The vaccine also requires two doses per person, and Pfizer said it can produce up to 50 million doses this year with about half going to the United States.

Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases, projects that both vaccines will be available to high-risk people by December and to the general public by spring 2021. While this gives us hope, Fauci said it’s important to continue with necessary health precautions including universal and uniform wearing of masks, avoiding situations congregating in crowds, keeping physical distance, doing things outdoors rather than indoors even as the weather gets colder, and washing your hands as frequently as you can.

POPSUGAR aims to give you the most accurate and up-to-date information about the coronavirus, but details and recommendations about this pandemic may have changed since publication. For the latest information on COVID-19, please check out resources from the WHO, CDC, and local public health departments.

George Clooney Says He and Amal Never Planned to Get Married or Have Kids When First Dating

the prince of wales hosts dinner to celebrate 'the prince's trust'

Chris JacksonGetty Images

In June 2017, George and Amal Clooney welcomed their twins, Ella and Alexander, into their family. Their children turned 3 this year, and the 59-year-old actor remembers clearly the day he found out he was going to be a dad to not one—but two—babies.

“We never talked about having kids, and then one day we just said, ‘What do you think?’ ” Clooney said in an interview with CBS This Morning today, to promote his new Netflix movie, The Midnight Sky.”We go to the doctor and you do the ultrasound. They’re like, ‘You got a baby boy!’ and I was like, ‘Baby boy, fantastic!’ And they go, ‘And you got another one there.’ I was up for one. Again, I’m old. All of a sudden, it’s two. It’s hard to get me to not talk and I just stood there for like 10 minutes just staring at this piece of paper going, ‘What? Two?’ “

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Clooney added that in the early days of their relationship, he and his wife didn’t talk about marriage, either.

“We never talked about marriage when we were dating,” he said. “I asked her out of the blue, took her a long time to say yes. I was on my knee for like 20 minutes, I finally said, ‘Look, I’m gonna throw my hip out.’ “

But it seems like Clooney’s pretty happy with the way things turned out, six years into his marriage to Amal, a human rights lawyer who’s also his partner in philanthropy. Clooney said he has no doubt that his life has been made better by his little family.

“There is no question that having Amal in my life changed everything for me,” he said. “It was the first time that everything that she did and everything about her was infinitely more important than anything about me. And then we had these two knuckleheads. It is very fulfilling and something I wasn’t at all…I didn’t see coming.”

Those “knuckleheads” are pretty lucky to have him, too.

Susanne Bier Answers Your Burning The Undoing Questions

Travis Scott really captured the mood of the nation when he tweeted last night, “I can’t be the only one waiting for the last episode of the undoing.” Indeed, he is not—the group chats were lit up all day in anticipation of the big reveal: Who killed Elena Alves?

Tonight’s The Undoing finale will clear up any lingering questions about the murder, director and executive producer Susanne Bier promises, including whether Grace (Nicole Kidman), Jonathan (Hugh Grant), and even Henry Fraser (Noah Jupe) were involved in it. And though she’s not dropping any more hints, the famed director of After the Wedding, The Night Manager, and Bird Box shared some insight into her directing process, how to juggle multiple murder suspects onscreen, and why, exactly, everyone is so obsessed with Nicole Kidman’s green coat. Below, she answers all our burning questions about the most talked-about show of the season.

Your work often delves into the moment a person’s semblance of normalcy is uprooted and rearranged. What was the draw of The Undoing, both within and outside of that framework?

When HBO approached me and said that they were doing a project that David Kelly was writing for Nicole, that was a huge draw. And then the notion, as you mentioned, is another big draw because it’s very oddly recognizable—not in that dramatic sense that it is within the script, but in a sense of being thrown into something where you think you know and understand the role, and then the role has a completely different shape from what you anticipated.

How do you craft that tension, getting to the point that everyone is just a second or two away from melting down?

It’s very much about making sure that the tension is there. How can I compare it? If you have somebody who is drunk and who gets home, then this drunk person is going to do everything they can in order to hide that they are drunk. It’s a little bit like that. You want to fight it and because you fight it, it’s much more palpable and oddly more visible, even if the person fighting it thinks it’s much more hidden.

Bier on set with Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman.

NIKO TAVERNISEHBO

The big cliffhanger at the end of episode 5 is quite the blindside. It’s very quiet and feels routine, but then you get this big reveal. How did you approach shooting that?

At this point, because it’s episode 5, we’ve gotten used to, Oh, there’s going to be a cliffhanger. I wanted to do the opposite. I wanted to go, Oh, okay. Maybe the cliffhanger was the call with the mother. I wanted the audience to be a little bit relaxed, then throw it in at the very end.

So, what can we expect from the finale?

All I can say is that you will get to know how it ends. We’re not cheating you. You will know what happened.

Let’s talk about building out Grace’s world—are you sick of talking about the green coat yet?

[Laughs] No, I’m not. It’s interesting because I had told the costume designer, Signe Sejlund, that we needed a very distinct coat for Nicole. And right away when I started reading, I was like, “She needs to have that big red hair.” I kept bugging the costume designer about that coat because I felt that, until we had that coat, we didn’t know who she was. It was a key to her character. She doesn’t look at all like the other moms in school. She doesn’t dress conventionally upper class at all. She dresses a bit bohemian, but there’s still a sense of… Nobody is thinking it’s a throwaway coat. It looks classy, but it’s not recognizable as a certain designer. That added to her being very unlike everyone else, which was really important.

How did you ensure Elena’s presence felt ghostly, like a haunting? You can’t get away from her face. Why did you decide to make her such a visual presence on the show?

She grew a lot on us because she’s so enigmatic and interesting. It seemed a bit interesting to have a ghost, but also, she’s a bit like Brigitte Bardot. She has a sultry, old-school beauty, which is so different from that whole New York environment, which is much more controlled and athletic, in a way. She’s got that very deep sense of longing. And it was also a reminder of something we possibly all carry but we try not to deal with.

How did you go about creating the visual language for the “flashback” moments Grace is imagining? Jonathan sleeping with Elena, the moment Elena is killed… Were they part of the script originally?

There was an element of flashback in the script. I can’t remember which ones were in the script and which ones were done later. When you’re shooting, you go, Oh, it would be interesting to have this. And then you take a note of it. But it was very much playing with that balance of, what do we know? What do we not know? What do we imagine? What is real? What is not real? And then making sure the audience has that weird sense as well—of not being quite sure of what to trust and what not to trust, exactly like what Grace has. Or actually, what a number of the characters have.

Because you’re juggling so many threads in this story, anybody could be the murderer. How do you ensure each suspect gets the right amount of screen time without saying too much?

I mean, I have a brilliant screenwriter who tailors it very elegantly. But when you’re shooting it and editing it, you make sure that when the character looks at the other character, they look a little bit longer than maybe they normally would. Or a hand is seeming relaxed—until you are in closer with the hand, and then you see this person is not relaxed. It’s very much about contradictions. Everything in that language is about contradiction. You tell one thing with one kind of image and then you reveal something with another image that makes you see the first image in a completely different light.

susanne bir on the set of the undoing

NIKOTAVERNISE.COMHBO

What does the editing room process look like for you?

I try to spend a long time in editing, not over-engaging. The thing for me as a director is very much about maintaining that fresh eye and that sense of, How is the audience, who has never seen it before, going to react? I try at all times to be super detailed and super engaged, but also keep a distance. I don’t want to read the script too many times. I don’t want to see the edit too many times. At the very, very end, everything is excruciatingly detailed. I always go, “Let’s just change this one frame for one, which is slightly different.” If you, as a director, don’t have those fresh eyes, things get boring. It’s very dangerous.

How did you decide to ask Nicole to sing the credit song?

[Laughs] I don’t know! We were playing around with the credits and I was like, What is this? And what should it be? Then I started hearing that song and imagining Nicole singing it. And I was like, “I’m just going to ask her to do it.” And she was like, “What?”

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas Already Want to Give Daughter Willa a Sibling

celebrity sightings in los angeles, california march 1, 2020

Chris Wolf/Star MaxGetty Images

This summer, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner welcomed their first baby together, a daughter named Willa.

“Joe and Sophie welcomed a baby girl last Wednesday in L.A. and are over the moon,” a source told Entertainment Tonight at the time. “The couple is already obsessed and can’t stop gloating about their new addition. The couple is taking time to enjoy this special moment and have only shared the news and updates with family and friends. With the pandemic Joe and Sophie have been very cautious about who is around them and their little girl.”

Willa is only four months old, but her parents are already convinced they want more kids, a source told Us Weekly.

“Joe and Sophie are already trying to have another baby,” a source told Us Weekly. “They are really excited to expand their family. Having the baby has made them really close and want to have a large family together.”

Jonas and Turner got married in 2019, and just over a year later, they welcomed Willa into their family.

“I feel like the only thing that’s changed for me is having this incredible sense of security,” she told ELLE in March of this year. “Just the word husband and the word wife—it just solidifies the relationship. I love being married. I think it’s wonderful. I’m sure we’ll have our hiccups and our different things. But right now, it’s like the security and the safety is everything.”

She also gushed about her husband: “With Joe, I always felt like I was the one who was punching, like, way above my league. And I still feel like that,” Turner says. “He’s so handsome, talented, funny, charismatic. I’m really lucky to be with him and have someone like him want to be around me and spend time with me.”

Kylie and Kendall Jenner Joke About Their History of Dating Rappers and Basketball Players in Hilarious TikTok

If anyone is good at making fun of the Kardashian-Jenners, it’s…the Kardashian-Jenners. On Thanksgiving, Kylie Jenner posted a TikTok with her sister Kendall that shows they definitely know how to laugh at themselves.

“Dad’s fav,” Mom’s fav” the video reads. Kylie walks toward “Mom’s fav” and Kendall toward “Dad’s.” That one might be up to interpretation, depending on which family member you ask, but…we’ll take it.

The next options: “hoopers” and “rappers.” With their hands over their eyes and their heads down, each sister walks toward the labels. Kendall goes toward “hoopers” and Kylie toward “rappers.”

To be fair, they aren’t wrong. Kylie has been known to date musicians and rappers including Cody Simpson, Jaden Smith, Tyga, and her daughter’s father, Travis Scott.

Kendall has been linked to professional basketball players, including Devin Booker and Ben Simmons. She’s been rumored to date others, such as D’Angelo Russell, though she shut that report down pretty quickly in a tweet last July.

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

“2 out of 5 accurate, thanks,” she responded to the above sexist meme going around about her. Kendall, who has been known to be private about her dating life, doesn’t often speak up about things like this, so this was a rare moment.

In the TikTok, the sisters also go on to poke fun at each other when it comes to their careers. When the labels “supermodel” an “Instagram model” come up on the video, Kendall saunters over to “supermodel” while Kylie tries to follow her. Kendall pushes her back to the “Instagram model” side.

Again…when it comes to deprecating humor, no one does it better.

We Tested This New Breathable Face Mask For Working Out, and FYI, It’s So Comfortable

You know what’s really hard? Running with a face mask on! Your breathing is shallow and you can never quite catch your breath. You also almost feel like taking in all of this fresh air in the opposite of what you should be doing. As we all adjust to wearing masks when we’re not home, we’re quickly starting to realize different occasions call for different masks, and not just in the fashion sense. I’ve tried running in my regular day-to-day masks and gaiters until senior editor at POPSUGAR Fitness, Christina Stiehl, clued me in to the new Athleta Activate Mask ($40 for two).

Designed in collaboration with the Emergency Design Collective, the Activate was developed with technology to help block particles and keep air flowing. Athleta tested the performance of this mask with selected wear-testers, including the most-decorated track and field athlete Allyson Felix, to ensure comfort during fitness. The Activate is simultaneously breathable but doesn’t move around as you’re working out. Worried about sweat? The Activate is engineered with TurboDry™ fabric. If it’s good enough for 3 time World Champion Allyson Felix, I was pretty sure it could handle my workouts — they’re pretty low impact! I got some advice a little closer to home from our resident fitness expert.

“I tried it out during an outdoor bootcamp class, and it stayed put and was comfortable throughout the whole hour-long workout.” Stiehl said. “It seems to be a better fit for more low-impact workouts where you’re not breathing heavily through your mouth, but I definitely keep this mask on rotation as an everyday mask to run errands or do any low-impact workouts outside of my apartment.”

During the holidays, my workouts will definitely be low-impact so I’m definitely sold and planning to get them as stocking stuffer gifts! Let us know if you like them too!

Noah Jupe Really Wants to Be The Undoing’s Killer

Spoilers for The Undoing episode 5, “Trial by Fury,” ahead.

Admit it: You gasped at the end of last Sunday’s The Undoing.

The HBO murder mystery, written by David E. Kelley and directed by Susanne Bier, built a pyre of tortuous, sometimes questionable twists over five episodes, then tossed a lit match during the final moments of its penultimate installment. Grace Fraser (Nicole Kidman), still puzzling over her inscrutable husband Jonathan’s (Hugh Grant) involvement in the brutal killing of his lover (Matilda De Angelis), finds the missing murder weapon in her son Henry’s (Noah Jupe) violin case.

“In murder mysteries, you always rule out the kid—because of innocence, because of the fact that they’re a child,” Jupe tells me over Zoom. “It’s one of the reasons I took the job, being part of that twist and right in the center of it. I loved exploring the fact that maybe Henry wasn’t innocent, maybe [he was] on the dark side, maybe he had his own secrets.”

Henry is a just another notable entry in Jupe’s already outstanding resume—at 15, the Brit is easily one of Hollywood’s most in-demand child actors, with pivotal roles in A Quiet Place, Ford v. Ferrari, and last year’s star-making Honey Boy. In fact, despite the tension of being central to a murder mystery, The Undoing is probably one of the actor’s less stressful roles to date: “There were some nice and easy scenes at the start,” he admits. “But it did get pretty deep pretty quickly, I do have to say.”

Along with shielding his character’s burden of guilt, Jupe more than holds his own alongside co-stars Kidman and Grant. Perhaps it’s because his seven-year-old brother keeps him down to earth? “He was like, ‘What are you choosing now Noah?’ And I said, ‘I’m shooting this thing where both the Paddington villains are playing my parents,'” Jupe laughs. “He was like ‘Oh. How does that work?'”

Ahead, Jupe talks untangling Henry’s motivations, creating the “unconditional love” of a family unit, and the shock you’re not expecting from tomorrow’s finale.

When you did your initial read through of the scripts, did you have any idea of where it was going? Did you think, Henry could be involved?

Oh, I wanted to be the murderer. I was like, “I’m the murderer for this reason, this reason, this reason.” But everyone was like that around the table [read]. Hugh was like, “I did it.” Nicole was like, “I did it.” Everyone was gambling over who did it. It was such a lively table on the day we read through the last episode. Everyone was so excited. You never get that in a read-through with the episodes. I’ve been a part of lots of movie read-throughs and you read it through in one go, but these were on separate days, and then it all led up to this final episode. It was almost as if we were watching it at the table.

Give me the general vibe in the room as you read through the finale.

It’s a journey of itself. It’s like a normal finale in the sense that it brings everything together—and then takes that on a journey. It’s like a movie. It’s that last episode that has its own arc. It’d work as a movie. And it was silent. It was very silent throughout that whole episode 6 [read] until the end. It definitely delivers.

How do you think people are going to react to the finale?

I think it’s going to be extremely satisfying to a lot of people. No one’s going to expect what happens. People might have predicted the outcomes, but the outcomes are given and then taken on a whole journey. No one it is expecting that. People might have predicted who it was, maybe, but no one’s expecting the journey you’re going to go through in the sixth episode.

I know Susanne has a very particular method. She makes you rehearse first thing every day, right?

She’s very fluid. There are lots of conversation involved. We get in in the morning and talk about the scenes, and then if we want to experiment, we experiment. And if Susanne wants to show us something, she shows us something. It felt like you were on the same level. It wasn’t a structure, just a free flow of ideas. And then by the end of that, everyone coms to the conclusion of how they wanted the scene to go. But it still wasn’t even strict, “That’s how the scene is going to be.” There was improvisation in the scenes, lots of experimenting, and I really got to give it to Susanne for creating that vibe on set and it being an efficient way of doing it, because that could get out of control.

What did rehearsal look like before you shot the final scene of episode 5?

Because we were in my bedroom, we had a whole day of that, and there’s a few scenes of my bedroom. I think we had the one with Donald and me at the violin, and then a couple of moments between me and my mom that were really deep and allowed us to create this bond between us as characters. What was fun was absolutely destroying that bond at the end of the day with this last scene. We’ve built up this trust throughout the day, and then this last scene was the realization that nothing is as it seems, that the truth is not necessarily the truth. It was really fun to play that and really fun, as two actors, to have that journey throughout the day.

henry's rationale about dad's disappearance calms grace's anxiety, but phone rings nobody there photo by warrick pagehbo

Warrick PageHBO

Throughout the course of the series, are you dropping hints for this bombshell? Or are you trying to play it as straight as possible?

Knowing my end, the journey as a whole, was good because I knew the truth of my character. And I had never really played a character before that you didn’t know everything about, that was hiding. That was really interesting in playing the scenes, knowing that there was this physical hammer attached to me constantly. And I reckon if you went back and watched the scenes, there are moments when my mom will say something and it’s like, “Do I tell her? Do I not?” Or she’ll say, “What about the murder weapon?” And then there’s a reaction from me.

I loved the scene with Henry and Jonathan walking through the park at the beginning of the pilot. It feels like a very real snapshot into a father/son relationship. How did you build that rapport with Hugh?

It was one of the first scenes we shot, and it was really cold. Terrible weather, but kind of beautiful. Central Park in the winter is stunning. The beauty of it, and the cold, me and Hugh sat next to each other in big coats shivering throughout the scene. That element broke the ice, excuse the pun. Me and Hugh got on quite well. We have a very similar sort of humor. From the read-through, getting to know him, making him laugh, him making me laugh, kind of built that relationship. And this scene, he’s really funny and it is such a nice, rhythmic scene between a father and a son. It just kind of came. We talked loads about it, but then when we actually started doing it, it all came together and felt instantly great. It came naturally.

NIKO TAVERNISEHBO

And then you contrast it with Henry visiting him in prison. Were you conscious of the parallels there?

That scene was really interesting, because seeing your dad and not being able to touch him was a huge thing. Knowing that he’s been put in there for a reason, not knowing if that reason is true or not, but still knowing he’s done something wrong to get himself in there—the trust between them is broken.

But honestly, within a family, there’s only unconditional love. It doesn’t stop as soon as someone does something. It’s not like a boyfriend and girlfriend, when someone cheats, it just goes [away]. There is that love that will always be there no matter what happens. So exploring that and exploring the fact that he can’t not care for his dad—he has to care for his dad and he wants him back, because ultimately he spent his whole life with this person as his father figure. For that anchor to go, in a moment of Henry’s life that’s so dramatically changing all of the time, is terrible for him. So he wants it back, and [that scene is] almost exploring the lengths he will go to believe certain things just so he can get his family back together.

I could not fathom why Henry would eat up all this TV coverage. I think I would try to avoid replaying the worst moment of my life. Why was Henry doing this?

There’s no answers around him—in terms of his parents, in terms of his grandfather. The only place there’s almost answers is the news. And Henry almost got into this mental state that he thinks that, at some point, something’s going to come out that resolves all of this. He needs to be [on his phone] so can run back to his dad and say, “It’s fine. It’s fine. We’re all going to get back together.” He’s constantly waiting for that moment, for that breaking news moment, when they say, “It wasn’t him, it was actually this person,” and everything can go back to normal. I’m sure he hates watching it. He absolutely hates seeing it all. But he has to.

Vanderbilt University’s Sarah Fuller Becomes First Woman to Play in Power 5 Football Game

College football history has been made! On Nov. 28, Vanderbilt University senior Sarah Fuller became the first woman to play in a Power Five game as the Commodores took on the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. Fuller’s barrier-breaking moment came at the beginning of the second half when she took the field as a placekicker to start the play. Vanderbilt posted a video of the historic feat on Instagram, writing, “Sarah Fuller kicks off for Vanderbilt Making history.”

Earlier in the week, the 21-year-old athlete was tapped to suit up after other Vanderbilt team members were benched due to possible exposure to COVID-19. Ahead of the big game, she shared her excitement on Instagram, posting a picture of her football helmet with the saying “Play Like a Girl” printed on the back. The slogan refers to the nonprofit of the same name that inspires girls to partake in sports and STEM programs. “Let’s make history. #playlikeagirl #anchordown,” Fuller captioned her post. The Texas native also plays for the university’s soccer team, which won the SEC Tournament championship on Nov. 22. Watch her momentous kick above!

Zac Efron Has Reportedly Split from His Girlfriend Vanessa Valladares

Zac Efron and Vanessa Valladares have reportedly split after five months together, per The Sun. The two met after Efron relocated to Australia at the beginning of 2020, and they seemed to really hit things off for much of the year.

“Zac met Vanessa while she was an employee at the Byron Bay General Store & Cafe in June,” a source told Us Weekly. “Things moved quickly, and Vanessa spends most nights at Zac’s house. They are both very smitten with each other.”

In September, the couple was seen sharing some PDA while out in Byron Bay, and also went on an Australian ski vacation together this summer.

“Zac and Vanessa looked like the real deal,” a source told The Sun. “They were besotted with each other. So once he decided to stay in Australia long term, he suggested they buy their first home. They’d started to look at a few places but, sadly, fate wasn’t on their side. Zac’s work and the enforced distance has really taken its toll.” The source continued, adding that there might not be much of a chance for a reunion: “Friends hope they can reunite, but it seems their relationship was more like a holiday romance than they cared to admit.”

The source said that Efron had suggested that he and Valladares, who works as both a model and restaurant employee, buy a house together at one point: “They’d started to look at a few places but, sadly, fate wasn’t on their side. Zac’s work and the enforced distance has really taken its toll.”

How One Writer is Passing on Indigenous Design Traditions, Old and New

My daughter is only six, but I’ve already begun to envision items from my closet belonging to her one day. While I understand that when she’s grown, she may have different fashion inclinations — will she want to wear my strapless Temperley London peplum dress? — I still want her to have access to the special pieces I’ve purchased. Focusing on jewellery makes this endeavour easier, given that the question of whether it will fit her future adult body is irrelevant.

At 16 months old, she was wrapping herself up in my studded Rachel Roy tweed blazer and toddling around in my Diane von Furstenberg shoes. I was surprised that playing dress-up in my clothes would start that early, but it’s something she has continued to this day, wearing my tank tops as dresses and constantly rummaging through my jewellery for other looks to make her own. She’s a whip-smart, funny, sweet and stylish girl, and since I gave her life, I also want to give her my prized pieces.

The only things I’ve had passed down to me are my grandmother’s pink floral brooch — acquired during a random jewellery purge that I happened to be at her house for — and a square of fabric from my mom’s wedding dress that I carried with me during my own wedding. Otherwise, the idea of setting aside garments and accessories for loved ones was a foreign concept to me up until a few years ago.

My heirlooming stemmed from my sister-in-law, Sandy; she’d been browsing the Tiffany & Co. website ahead of Christmas one year and came upon the Paloma Picasso-designed Olive Leaf collection. She rang up my husband to tell him to buy the necklace for me to commemorate our first Christmas as parents to our newborn, Olive. (She’d also told him we should pass it down to our daughter because the symbolism was too perfect not to.) My husband bought the piece for us the next day.

This event set off the idea that I had, and could have, items that were meaningful and precious enough to hand down. Every time I wear the Tiffany necklace, it’s a reminder that Olive will grow old enough to wear it one day. But the necklace also reminds me of my mortality; it devastates me to think of a time when she’ll be here on earth and I won’t, but it’s soothing to know that she will have pieces of me to carry with her when I’m gone.

My jewellery collection has historically been more costume-oriented, so the Tiffany necklace was an anomaly in terms of its luxurious heritage — until I started investing in pieces that celebrate my Indigenous background, that is. Despite having grown up on the Six Nations reserve in southwestern Ontario, I didn’t discover the contemporary accessories being made by Indigenous designers — which are increasingly being dubbed “luxury” due to their labour-intensive creation process and typically-limited- edition quantity — until 2018, when I was at the Indigenous Fashion Week Toronto marketplace. During the preceding fashion shows, everyone was buzzing in anticipation of shopping from incredible labels like White Otter Design Co. and Tania Larsson.

My purchase that evening was a $110 pair of intricately beaded earrings from Niio Perkins. Perkins, from Akwesasne, uses the Iroquois beadwork technique of stitching raised lines in different-hued beads to depict a large flower; the beaded designs are then backed with a strip of leather. These beautiful earrings are especially meaningful because Perkins is from the same place my mom is from. (My mother was very excited to learn that I now own something that’s Akwesasne-made.) Wearing this pair of earrings feels like carrying a symbol of her and my many relatives from that community; it’s a place we try to visit every year, and the people there have captured my own immediate family’s hearts.

Today when I open my jewellery drawer, I see pairs of acrylic earrings in black, silver and “Coke-bottle blue,” all expressing Salish ovoid shapes designed by Warren Steven Scott. And there are pastel beaded-fringe and blue and red diamond-shaped earrings, both from Running Fox Beads. These may be snapped up as soon as Olive’s ears are pierced, and I am more than happy to share them.

After all, she advised me on which pairs I should buy while I was browsing the brand’s wares at local markets or shopping online. Not only is she honing her eye in this process; I’m also exposing her to the beautiful handiwork traditions of her culture – something she doesn’t often see in our urban Scarborough, Ont., setting. I want her to be proud of her background, and one day I’ll share with her what I’ve learned about the differences in technique and motifs from Indigenous communities across the country.

I recently decided that I wanted to go in a new direction and find something that I could appreciate every day and that would spice up a wardrobe basic — in this case, my sturdy canvas Baggu bag. I began investigating patch options. The beautiful ones I’d see from different makers tended to be florals or sweetgrass, and while they are culturally important and certainly lovely, I didn’t feel they represented me. I’m not outdoorsy — nor can I tell a hydrangea from a peony. I also searched pop culture references—especially from television, since that’s a lexicon I take quite seriously — but I couldn’t find any that were a nod to a favourite show or character.

indigenous design
Imagery courtesy of Kelly Boutsalis.

I decided to commission a large beaded patch instead — I wanted it to really resonate. I love the subversive twist of a movie or film character being depicted through the time-worn medium of beading. I approached my cousin Carley Gallant-Jenkins; she’s based in Brantford, Ont., and recently launched her own beading business. We tossed around ideas of characters and settled on She-Ra, the princess superhero of my childhood. Thanks to a recent Netflix revival, She-Ra is also my daughter’s favourite superhero, and we made sure we watched each new season. In addition to offering up some nostalgia, She-Ra was a strong, caring role model for my kid.

Through back-and-forth messages, the three of us settled on what image my cousin would bead: She-Ra in full-on badass mode — her hair flowing, fists together, her red cape streaming behind her. Olive was incredibly excited at this prospect, not only because it was her beloved She-Ra but also because she knew it would one day be hers. And my cousin and I are hopeful that what she creates will make our elders happy “to see a traditional art form continuing, evolving, living and breathing.”

Miley Cyrus’ ‘Angels Like You’ Lyrics Seem to Be About Kaitlynn Carter

celebrity sightings in los angeles september 14, 2019

Miley Cyrus dropped her new album, Plastic Hearts, today, and fans are already all over the possible meaning behind the lyrics. “Angels Like You” is the third track on the album, and—some curious people are convinced—is apparently about Cyrus’s ex, Kaitlynn Carter.

The two dated for a month in the summer of 2019, following Cyrus’s split from her husband of less than a year and on-and-off partner of ten years, Liam Hemsworth.

The song starts off like this: “Flowers in hand, waiting for me / Every word in poetry / Won’t call me by name, only ’baby’ / The more that you give, the less that I need / Everyone says I look happy / When it feels right,” which could reference the pictures of Carter and Cyrus on vacation together, looking like they were having a blast, in the summer of 2019:

“Miley is very close with Kaitlynn,” a source told People then. “It’s romantic, but also a friendship. They are both going through similar stuff right now and are bonding over it.” The source added: “Miley is okay, but you can tell she isn’t 100 percent happy.”

Cyrus seems to reference her complicated feelings about her time with Carter in this next set of lyrics: “I know that you’re wrong for me / Gonna wish we never met on the day I leave I brought you down to your knees / ‘Cause they say that misery loves company / It’s not your fault I ruin everything / And it’s not your fault I can’t be what you need / Baby, angels like you can’t fly down here with me / I’ll put you down slow, love you goodbye / Before you let go, just one more time / Take off your clothes, pretend that it’s fine / A little more hurt won’t kill you / Tonight mama says you don’t look happy / Close your eyes.”

“I’m everything they said I would be / La, la, la / I’m everything they said I would be,” the post-chorus reads.

In a November essay for ELLE, Carter discusses about summer with Cyrus, which followed the end of her marriage with Brody Jenner.

This past July, I went on vacation with a female friend; the next thing I knew, I was in love with her,” she wrote, later adding: “Until that trip, it had never crossed my mind that I was even capable of loving a woman the way I loved her…I fell just as hard for her as I had the older man so many years before. It was that same familiar force of nature; I didn’t have to think about a thing or overanalyze. It just happened and it felt exactly right. Reflecting back on our three-year friendship, I realized I’d always been drawn to her in a way I wasn’t with other friends, but until that trip it had never crossed my mind to think of her in a romantic sense.”

All I’ll say is that, on the heels of Happiest Season and, Dashing in December, and A New York Christmas Wedding, we could use some more queer content to lose our minds over this holiday season. If this song is about Kaitlynn, that’ll only validate the fact that I’m already applying it to all of the leftover angst I have about my queer breakups. And if not? Well, uh, I’ll still cry queer tears while I play this track over and over.

The 10 Celebrities That Influenced Our Style in 2020

Photo by Nathan Congleton/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images

Lyst has released its annual Power Dressers list for 2020.

Lyst has released its year in review report for 2020 – and it’s been a year like no other. With lockdowns demarcating much of the year, and retail stores closing and then opening and then closing again, fashion – both the industry and the everyday act of getting dressed – has been turned on its head over the past nine months. But despite living and working at home and ventures outside the house few and far between, our interest in celebrity style has not waned. In the report, Lyst outlines the top 10 Power Dressers of 2020 “whose personal style choices drove the biggest spikes in searches, sales, news coverage and social media mentions over the last 12 months.”

Below, discover our collective celebrity style crushes from the past 12 months below:

Harry Styles

Harry Styles becomes the first male to top the Power Dressers list – and it’s a well-deserved accolade. Following the release of his most recent single Golden, Styles’ inspired a 52 per cent increase in searches for blue and turqouise blazers, and a 92 per cent increase in searches for yellow bucket hats. Plus, the #HarryStylesCardigan challenge on TikTok saw searches for knitwear spike 166 per cent.

Beyoncé

Marine Serre’s moon-print is one of the most in-demand prints of the year and that is thanks in large part to Beyoncé. The Grammy Award winner sported a printed catsuit in her Black Is King visual album and within 48 hours, searches for the brand spiked 426 per cent, and more than 3,000 shoppers searched for “crescent moon top” in the days that followed. Additionally, the Alessandra Rich suit she wore in an Instagram post in September prompted a 78 per cent increase in searches week-on-week.

Kim Namjoon (RM) of BTS

The frontman of K-pop boyband BTS, Kim Namjoon (who is known as RM) is a firm fashion fixture. Earlier this year, his white turtleneck and jacket combination inspired a 67 per cent increase in searches for similar pieces. Following his appearances at the 2020 MTV VMAs in head-to-toe Gucci, searches for Gucci ties surged 28 per cent, and three-piece suits by 12 per cent in the following 24 hours.

AOC

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has had a few major moments this year, and the red suit she wore to condemn sexism in the US Congress back in July inspired a 74 per cent rise in searches in the days after the speech was televised. AOC also proved her influencer status after showcasing Telfar’s Shopping Bags on Instagram – searches for the brand rose 163 per cent as a result.

Travis Scott

When rapper Travis Scott announced in January that he was teaming up with Nike, searches for the brand rose 128 per cent month on month. Lyst also notes that the term “Travis Scott x Nike” also spiked by 168 per cent within 24 hours of the release of the collab. Interestingly, his most recent team-up with McDonald’s helped to boost the company’s quarterly sales.

Paul Mescal

In addition to Harry Styles and his pearl necklaces, Normal People actor Paul Mescal was also responsible for a surge in interest in men’s jewellery this year. Additionally, his summer wardrobe of short shorts saw searches for the item spike 51 per cent month-on-month and his Louis Vuitton look at the Emmys in September saw searches for the brand increase 44 per cent week-on-week.

Lizzo

Following Lizzo’s appearance in Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty show, searches for blue lingerie spiked by 96 per cent. And after her Grammys performance, searches for neon green bodysuits rose 37 per cent in the 24 hours that followed.

Charli D’Amelio

TikTok star Charli D’Amelio caused a 90 per cent spike in searches for pink Prada bags after she was spotted carrying one at the brand’s show during Milan Fashion Week. She also caused a 73 per cent spike in searches for tie-dye tees after wearing one in a video celebrating hitting 72 million followers.

Kate Middleton

The Duchess of Cambridge’s fashion influence has remained strong throughout the pandemic. She caused a 185 per cent surge in searches for floral face masks in August, and a 36 per cent increase in searches for striped Breton tops after a virtual appearance on the BBC in April.

Chiara Ferragni

Rounding out the top 10 is Italian influencer-turned-businesswoman Chiara Ferragni. Her collab with Champion in April saw a 108 per cent increase in searches for the brand that month, and a number of her at-home style choices – like a Versace bathrobe and Louis Vuitton fur slippers – have also influenced searches in recent months according to the report.

The Kardashians Had a Big Family Gathering for Thanksgiving, Ignoring CDC COVID Guidelines

Another holiday, another opportunity for the Kardashian family to gather despite expert advice not to do so during a pandemic! On Thursday, many of the Kardashian-Jenners gathered at Kris’s Palm Springs home for Thanksgiving and showed off photos of their lavish get-together on Instagram. This choice to gather follows backlash the family has received for other gatherings and trips they’ve done this year, including Kim Kardashian’s 40th birthday island trip and Kendall Jenner’s 25th West Hollywood bash.

As BuzzFeed pointed out, the table appeared to be set for 14 people. The California Department of Public Health has, on its website, prohibited gatherings with more than three households. Ahead of Thanksgiving, the CDC recommended that no one from separate households spend the holiday together: “Gatherings with family and friends who do not live with you can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu,” the website reads. Farther down the page, the CDC provided guidance to those who did decide to gather, saying that wearing masks and staying six feet apart from anyone who does not live with you would help prevent the spread of the virus.

From the looks of it, the Kardashian-Jenners didn’t wear masks, and they all seemed to mingle with each other pretty freely.

“Kylie and I are nail twins, and we’re very festive,” Khloé Kardashian said on her Instagram story, as she and her youngest sister showed off their coordinating, Christmas-themed manicures. Kylie posted a photo of their matching nails on her Instagram:

The kiddos seemed to have a good time, too:

And they enjoyed quite the delicious-looking spread; Khloé caught Kourtney filling up her plate:

There was a honey wall and a s’mores station:

On her story, Khloé said she made a couple of Oreo-based desserts, but it doesn’t seem as if Kourtney was really in the baking or cooking mood this year. Kylie called her oldest sister out on her Instagram story, saying, “Kourtney’s Thanksgiving contribution,” before showing a plate of potato chips and what looks like onion dip. “All day and night she worked on this.”

Kylie also shared the place settings for the evening, which featured plates with very realistic-looking turkeys on them:

She shared a couple selfies with her mom, Kris, while they promoted Black Friday sales for Kylie’s skincare and cosmetics lines:

To top it all, though, she and Kendall did this (admittedly hilarious) TikTok:
