Kate Moss Wants to Wear Diamonds “All the Time, in Every Situation”

Kate Moss loves jewelry a lot. Like, a lot a lot. Messika by Kate Moss, the British supermodel’s new collaboration with the French jeweler, unveiled today at Paris Fashion Week, features 70 pieces of high jewelry divided into 11 sets. Encompassing everything from Art Deco baguette-cut diamond bracelets and rings to vibrantly colored diamond-and-malachite necklaces and bohemian head jewelry, the pieces are inspired by Moss’s impressive personal collection of antique jewelry, which she has been building ever since her career took off in the ’90s.

Last fall, Moss starred in Messika’s Lucky Move campaign with model Joan Smalls and actress Sylvia Hoeks; this project grew out of that photo shoot. A labor of love, it required Moss and Valérie Messika, the house’s founder and artistic director, to travel back and forth between Moss’s home in London and Messika’s atelier in Paris to work on it together. Of course, this was all done before lockdowns began in Europe last spring.

Ahead, Moss chats about jewelry collecting, “easygoing diamonds,” and where she stands on the “getting dressed while working from home” debate.

I hear you have an amazing personal collection of antique jewelry you drew inspiration from for the Messika by Kate Moss collection. Can you tell us more about how the collaboration came about?

Well, when we shot the Messika campaign last year, Valérie saw my love for diamonds. There were a lot of diamonds on set, and I was just very happy to stand there all day admiring them. I just love diamonds. I love looking at them. I love playing with them. So we got to chatting and she said, “Should we meet after and maybe do something together?” It all flowed really naturally.

When she saw my jewelry box, she kind of was surprised. She thought that it was going to be very rock ’n’ roll, but it’s actually more diverse. I collect different eras and different cultures, and it’s a bit more eclectic.

What are your favorite styles of antique jewelry?

I love Art Deco jewelry, particularly baguette diamonds. I have a bit of a collection of that. And then I have more hippy ’70s styles. Jewelry that you would wear on the beach—quite easygoing diamonds. I want to be able to wear diamonds all the time, in every situation. And then there’s the more, like, bohemian pieces. I’ve been to India a lot, and I always buy a lot of jewelry there.

What was your working process with Valérie?

She picked up on pieces that I liked, that I had in my collection already, and kind of went back and did her take on it, and more modern. Because obviously, the diamonds are whiter and brighter, and she mixed them with malachite, which is really different for Messika to use colored stones. I think it makes it look more bohemian, diamonds with colors. I’d wear them with a long, floaty chiffon thing.

She came to London, and I’d go to Paris. And then she was on holiday in Greece, and she was sending me CAD drawings. We were texting back and forth about what the pieces would feel like, look like, and how they would move. It was very important as well that there was movement in the jewelry to make it less strict.

What was your reaction when you saw the pieces for the first time in the flesh?

I was very happy. Very happy. I was like, “Can I take something now, please? What can I wear now?” And they were like, “Oh, we need it.” They were only samples, but I managed to get a broach and a ring out of them.

What jewelry do you wear every day?

I wear an antique emerald ring that my boyfriend gave me every day. It’s quite Victorian, I think, which is quite classic for me. But I love it, because it’s a beautiful Colombian emerald.

I’ve also been wearing this Messika Art Deco bracelet and ring, which I haven’t taken off. I’ve been adding diamond Indian bangles with it.

And then I’ve got my bits in a little ring dish. Sometimes I wear an antique Indian snake diamond and emerald ring, or a little diamond ring that I bought in Istanbul. It depends, I just throw things on. I like mixing it up, but I always put on jewelry every day.

Even during lockdown?

I tried to get dressed for lunch every day. That was my rule. And then after that, I’d be like, “Okay, I can get comfy again.” But it’s interesting, in lockdown I didn’t want to wear jewelry. I felt like I wanted to be a bit more bare. I went really simple. I did put an earring on sometimes for lunch, just to make sure that I hadn’t completely lost any glamour in my life.

I guess for you, it’s all about the mix—how all those different traditions of jewelry can sit together.

At the moment, it’s not really about wearing a set of matching anything, I think. Maybe that will come back in style. Sometimes, I just wear one diamond drop earring or a few of these little diamond hoops. Today, I’ve actually got on a pair of earrings, but that’s only because I just bought them. They’re jade earrings with diamonds that I found in Alfies Antique Market in London.

Are there any other places you shop for antique jewelry that you would recommend?

Anywhere I am traveling usually I try and pop in to an antique-jewelry shop if there is one. If I see one I can’t resist. But in London, I go to Alfies, S.J. Phillips, and Bentley & Skinner.

Annamie Paul Just Became the First Black Federal Party Leader in Canada

The new Green leader talks about what her party has to offer, her proudest moments and how to get good people into politics

After a year-long contest to replace long-serving leader Elizabeth May, the federal Green Party has chosen Annamie Paul as its new permanent leader.

Paul is a fluently bilingual lawyer from Toronto, a second-generation immigrant born to Caribbean parents and a former advisor to the International Criminal Court and Canada’s mission to the European Union. She won the contest Oct. 3, decided by party members’ online votes, on the eighth ballot in a crowded field.

In an interview the day after her victory, Paul does not come across as someone intent on pushing the Greens in a new direction or imposing her own vision on what is an eclectic, easily-divided membership. Rather, she seems more focused on changing the way Canadians think about the Greens as they already are, and the ideas that they’ve been putting forward for years.

She spoke to Maclean’s from Ottawa about her history, her pitch to voters and the book she hopes to get around to reading one of these days.

Q: You are the first Black permanent leader of a federal party in Canada and the second Jewish person to hold such a position. What does that mean to you?

A: I had people calling me and calling my family members in tears, talking about how much it meant to them. People calling or writing to say that they’d been watching the results with their children, and how much it meant to them. So I’m very aware of just how meaningful it is for a lot of people. And we do know that those symbols matter. It’s going to be just a little bit easier today for young Black girls or Indigenous girls or other under-represented groups to imagine themselves in politics. I’m proud that we had a group of volunteers that really believed that this was possible, even though it had never been done before. I’m going to try to live up to what I know the expectations will be for me.

Q: You bring plenty of legal and international experience into this role. Before you got into politics, what would you describe as your proudest accomplishment?

A: One of the things I’ve always tried to do when I see a way of amplifying impact, I try to create something that can do that. When I came back to Canada after my graduate studies, I founded the first organization in Canada focused on political under-representation and trying to change that, and to support a whole new generation of public policy leaders from marginalized groups. When I was in Barcelona, I saw that there were more and more international NGOs gravitating to the city. They had no home base, they had no structure of support, so I co-created an innovation hub for them. That helped to amplify their work all over the globe. Finally with Operation Black Vote Canada, with Velma Morgan I helped co-create the 1834 fellowship, which is training for 40 new young, Black public policy leaders. All of these are about doing more collectively than I could do by myself.

Q: The story you tell about why you decided to go bald is one that seems to say a lot about you.

A: I don’t know why my husband and I thought this was a good idea, because he was also in graduate school, but he thought, “Let’s have a kid. We have no money. I’m living in New York, you’re living in Princeton, I have two years of graduate studies, you have one. Let’s have a kid.” My son was born between my first and year of graduate studies. One night early in the fall, after I returned to school, I had this infant, and I had my homework, and I looked at my hair, and I thought of how many hours it took me to care for it. And I realized: Something has to go. It can’t be the kid—there’s rules about that. [laughs] It can’t be my studies. So the obvious thing was my hair. That’s really the story, it’s just that simple.

Q: You have said that if people are dissatisfied with political outcomes, they should make different choices. How will you convince voters that the Green Party is a trustworthy choice?

A: [Liberals] are intellectually exhausted. And I think that’s a by-product—not just for them but also for the Conservatives and the NDP—of having been in politics for a very, very long time. Having become really focused on what the polling is telling them about where they should be headed. And they, to my mind, have unfortunately lost the capacity to really think big and innovate in a meaningful way. I say that with a great deal of respect—I know that there are many committed people in politics. But it’s what I see. Sometimes the well runs dry. The Green Party is a solution to that because we have been talking about the innovative public policies that would have made us more resilient now and could make us more resilient in the future.

Q: You’re talking about ideas like universal pharmacare and basic income.

A: When I ran in 2019 [in Toronto Centre] I did not hear the NDP candidate or the Conservative candidate or Bill Morneau talking about guaranteed livable income. When I mentioned it, I heard crickets, I heard nothing. I did not hear anything when I talked about creating a safe supply and decriminalizing illicit drugs. Universal pharmacare, as well. Universal post-secondary education. All of these things, Greens have been talking about for years—often in the wilderness on our own. So it’s wonderful that they’re on board, and we want to work with them on that, but there comes a point where you should stop going to the copy and really choose the original. And that’s us.

Q: A large part of the Green base wishes that the party would reassert itself as overtly leftist and eco-socialist. You have been described as more of a centrist. But is that how you would describe yourself?

A: I joined the Green Party because I believe it to be the most progressive party in Canadian politics and offering the most progressive policies and to be constantly working toward a more just and equitable society. That is why I joined the party and I remain utterly convinced, even with our existing policies, without one single innovation, if we were to adopt even half of the things Greens proposed in our 2019 platform we would transform Canada for the better.

Q: You’ve said that you intend to act as a “chief spokesperson” for the grassroots. But what would you like to see added to the policy book?

A: We didn’t expect to be here as a planet, as a global community fighting this pandemic and this virus. Everyone, every single political party here and elsewhere, should be really looking at every single one of our policies to see what it means. Because the pandemic has touched every part of our society. Our economy, our social structures, just every single part of our society. I want to see us using this moment as the chance of a lifetime to accelerate our transition towards a net-zero emissions economy.

Read this next: Where Do Each of the Political Parties Stand When It Comes to Abortion?

Q: Would you ever consider a formal coalition with the NDP?

A: It’s a discussion that I would participate in as a member but it’s not one that I would initiate. I do know that there are members that are interested in that—I’m sure that it’s going to be part of our upcoming discussions. I love the way that Green Party members think—we’re always questioning, and always considering. My job will never be to tamp down consideration of things. Unless they conflict with core values and fundamental rights, and then I have no problem tamping away.

Q: Greens did not run a candidate when Jagmeet Singh ran in the Burnaby South by-election. Do you expect him to show you the same courtesy in Toronto Centre?

A: I will say that I leave that up to him . There are certain traditions that Greens have acknowledged and respected that we seem to be out on our own in doing that with. I do know that it’s clear that it made a difference for him when he was seeking his seat that we chose not to run a candidate. But that is for those parties to decide.

Q: What’s the best book you’ve read recently?

A: [laughs] A book? What’s a book?

Q: Yeah—have you been reading anything?

A: What have I been reading? [laughs] Have you ever participated in a political campaign?

Q: Nope.

A: Okay. Have you ever participated in one during a pandemic?

Q: Nope.

Read this next: Will CERB Affect Your Ability To Get a Student Loan?

A: What have I read?  I had this really ambitious plan that in my “down time,” I was going to read a series of short stories by Gabriel García Márquez, who is one of my favourite authors. But I’ve just been doing this from 8 o’clock to about 11 or 12 o’clock every day since February. I hope that I will be able to get a little more balance, to be honest, because it’s important, if you want good people in politics, that we allow them to find a way to have some kind of balance. It’s very much an all-or-nothing exercise, and I don’t think over the long term that’s really sustainable for people who have other things that they need to care about—like family, or friends, or children. And I don’t think it’s necessary. But it’s certainly the way it is now. So… I have read nothing. [laughs] I’m going to try and begin this role in the way I hope to continue, which is to be completely honest and transparent.

The Best Face Cleansers for Every Skin Type

Is your skin sensitive? Prone to acne? Parched beyond all recognition? There’s a new face wash for that

Fall ushers in many delights like woolly knits, spiced lattes and a new excuse to burn your coziest candles. In the skincare world, it’s bringing a multitude of new facial cleansers. While it may be tempting to immediately *add to cart*, it’s important to know what you’re buying and whether it’ll work for your skin.

“The primary role of cleansing is to remove debris from the skin,” says Dr. Shannon Humphrey, dermatologist and medical director at Carruthers & Humphrey in Vancouver. “That might be makeup, pollution or a build-up of oil and dead skin cells.”

If you’re looking to add a new cleanser to your skincare routine, here are a few things to keep in mind, no matter your particular skin type or concerns. First off, a cleanser doesn’t need to be loaded with harsh active ingredients or exfoliants in order to be effective. In fact, a cleanser that’s trying to do too much can actually disrupt the skin barrier. For the most part, a simple, gentle cleanser will work for all skin types, says Dr. Humphrey.

That being said, certain cleansers will serve certain skin types better. Oily and acne-prone skin types will find that a gel or foaming cleanser works best. Meanwhile, those with dry skin should look for an emollient-rich (think moisturizing oils and fatty acids) cream or milk formula. If you have reactive skin, steer clear of fragrance, which can cause irritation. Meanwhile, cleansing oils are gentle enough for most skin types so it’s more of a matter of preference.

Shawn Mendes Reveals What Was ‘Hurting’ His Relationship with Camila Cabello

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello have known each other for more than five years and first started setting off dating alarms last year. We’ve seen them appear to grow closer together during quarantine this year, when they performed a livestream concert and talked about their favorite Harry Potter characters.

They seem to be such a lovely, cozy couple, but like any pair, they’ve had to do a lot of hard work. During an interview with radio.com, Mendes shared how getting emotional for his music helped his relationship.

“I thought that I was a pretty open, emotional, guy until I started being in a relationship with someone that I really, truly love and, realizing that, ‘Oh no, I really have this big ego, and I don’t want to show her that I’m hurting and I don’t want to show her that that offended me, and like I want to be the man, and I want to be strong in this relationship,'” he said. “It actually was hurting our relationship.”

He added that Cabello was a big supporter of his new single “Wonder.”

“She really was a champion for this album,” he said. “I remember back when I first started a lot of the concepts and they felt a little bit intimidating. She was like, ‘Go, keep going, keep going.’ And she would do this thing like once a month, ‘Hey, just a reminder, this concept you’re on is incredible. It’s going to make people feel something really special. Don’t stop. Don’t stop. Don’t stop.'”

Someone cue “Señorita,” because we all need a reason to smile.

I’ve Worked Out Every Day in Quarantine — Here’s My Secret

working out every day

Like most people, I’ve done a lot of different things during the early days quarantine to pass the time. I baked banana bread. I bought a puzzle. I did online trivia. I signed up for at-home fitness classes. At one point I even decided to run 100 miles in a month — just because. Although I was adopting all of these new activities, months later and I can safely admit, few of them stuck.

But one thing I have done every single day since the days of stay-at-home orders, social distancing, and masks is get in a 30-minute workout. Some days these workouts have been full-on sweaty 10-mile runs or hour-long bootcamp classes. But other days, my workouts have been much gentler. They’ve included yoga, flexibility and stretching, and even just walks around my neighborhood. Regardless of my method, I have worked out for more than 160 days straight.

Now, I’m aware it sounds a little crazy, and it’s not necessarily a goal that I set for myself all those months ago. Rather, I found carving out these moments to challenge my mind and body were a way to manage a situation I couldn’t control. So every day, I’d lace up my UA HOVR™ Phantom 2 Running Shoes ($150) or roll out my yoga mat and do the work.

Beyond any physical benefits this adventure has brought me, I learned a valuable lesson that I feel pretty confident sharing with anyone who is wondering how on Earth I have been able to keep this up for nearly five months: rethink what a workout means to you.

A workout doesn’t necessarily look the same to everyone — and why should it? We’re all operating at different skill and fitness levels. Not to mention we all have different goals. Now, more than ever, a workout isn’t going to look the same as it did a year ago, so redefining what a workout means to you is essential. You may not have previously counted your daily commute or walk to grab a drink with a friend as a workout and instead reserved the label instead for your weekly spin class or weekend run. But perhaps your workout is your walk around the block. Maybe it doesn’t have to be as intense as it once was or as it still may be to your friend on Instagram.

I found challenging workouts during volunteer opportunities that I never would have expected. I never thought about walking in my neighborhood as more than a means to get from point A to point B. Now, I spend hours each week stretching my muscles and logging miles while walking and exploring.

Working out will always look different to us all. But constantly rethinking and reevaluating what you value in a workout — physical stress, muscle gain, mental endurance — can help you redefine workouts and thus find them in new places. And trust me, once you do that, you just may be surprised at how easy it is to listen to your body and give it the workout it needs that day.

North West Says the World Will Be Better if People Owned ‘More Dogs’

North West seems to have provided a solution for how we can all survive the rest of 2020: “I would make everybody love each other,” she told CR Fashion Book, per Page Six. “And make the coronavirus go away and make everyone have more dogs.”

This series asked several fashionable people how they would make the world a better place as 2020 comes to a close. “Make everyone have more dogs” is possibly the best solution to the 2020 garbage-fire that anyone has suggested.

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

This piece of news serves as yet another reminder that North West is a 7-year-old child who is fully capable of observing and offering solutions about what’s going on in the world. In a social-distancing PSA video that Kim Kardashian made for California’s governor office in April, North West interjected with her own very adult talking points.

Kim said, “Hi everyone in California, it’s Kim Kardashian West, and I just wanted to talk to you—”

North jumped in: “And North West!”

“I just wanted to have a serious conversation with you guys about social distancing,” Kim continued. “I know it’s California, and we’ve got the most beautiful weather, but we have to start to train ourselves.”

“I want out,” North said.

“Okay, so guys, we just want you to social distance. There’s so many fun, amazing projects you can do, you can spend time with your kids and have so much fun. Trust me, I want to get out—more than you know,” Kim said, as North jumped on the bed in the background.

“You should be more busy of your kids, not your friends,” North added.

This Stress-Melting Body Scan Meditation Takes Less Than 15 Minutes to Do From Bed

Stress builds up, but that doesn’t mean you need to let it overwhelm you and consume your day. As one friend of mine says, “Let it out, but let it go.” Doing a body scan — easing up on tension in every part of your body mindfully and slowly — can help mitigate the anxiety you’re feeling (a stress management expert even told us this in a past interview).

The body scan meditation video here is an example of a quick and gentle session that can do its part to melt stress away when you need to most. It comes from yoga instructor Arianna Elizabeth, and she suggests putting on this meditation before a mid-day nap or bedtime while lying down. After some easy breathing, she will walk you through the body scan, which consists of bringing attention to the soles of your feet, up to the top of your head, and back down again. Not to mention, the piano-led music in the background, along with her voice, are super relaxing to listen to.

“What we really need to do is begin to train our minds to do what we want in regards to relaxation, and this is something that anyone can do,” our instructor says, stating at the end, “Stay soft and stay gentle. No matter what the world can bring, you can still be in control of you.” Find a comfortable place, embrace this moment of pause, and try to allow the body scan to soothe you. You deserve it.

Here’s Your First Look at The Crown’s Take on Princess Diana’s Wedding Dress

On July 29, 1981, the world met one of the most iconic wedding dresses of all time: the dress that Lady Diana Spencer wore to marry Prince Charles at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. That dress, designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, became legendary for several reasons, one of which being its seemingly endless, dramatic train (it was 25 feet long).

This sartorial feat will make another appearance in The Crown season 4, and fans of the show finally get a first look at the recreation. Netflix released an image of the gown being worn by actress Emma Corrin, and every last detail, down to the ruffles, appears to be there:

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

The dress was designed by Amy Roberts, who Netflix said “wanted to pull in many of the style choices and create the same spirit of David & Elizabeth Emanuel’s original design, but make something new. Without access to the original patterns, Amy collaborated with David Emmanuel. He was enormously helpful, talking the design team through the detail of many of the original drawings to help them create this gown for Emma Corrin. Four months and five fittings later, with three people spending a collective 600 hours working, they had a dress. It’s made of 95 meters of fabric and 100 meters of lace, with a train that is approximately 30 meters long.”

Here’s a fun fact that Netflix added: “The Nottingham based team who made the lace on the Emmanuel’s original dress also made the lace for this one. Sadly the man who worked on the real-life dress passed away, but it’s his son who worked on the one you’ll see in The Crown.”

Netflix will release The Crown season 4 on November 15.

Before Swapping Dairy For Plant Milk, Know How It Can Affect Your Sensitive Stomach

Various types of lactose-free milks in glasses

If you’re considering plant milk over dairy for the sake of your unsettled stomach, make sure to talk to your doctor first. Just because plant milks are trendy doesn’t mean they’re best for your health.

“While plant milks are marketed as a healthier and more natural alternative to dairy milk, some are loaded with ingredients that are not the best for your overall health,” Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN, LD, and founder of Nutrition Now Counseling, explains.

“Avoiding questionable ingredients like oils, sugars, and stabilizers is a wise step for people who have digestion and gut health issues.”

Of course, it’s so important to talk to your doctor before exploring dietary alternatives to avoid pain, discomfort, and especially allergic reactions.

Because every person tolerates food differently, Manaker shares that sometimes it takes some trial-and-error (under medical supervision!) and lots of ingredient reading to find a plant milk that’s right for you — if it is at all.

“One person may tolerate a certain sweetener, for example, and another will drink the same beverage and be running to the bathroom in 10 minutes,” she explains.

And remember, plant milks in general have completely different nutritional profiles than cow’s milk, which is high in protein and vitamins like calcium, vitamin D, and several B vitamins, Manaker says.

Since nondairy milks are primarily made of water, she adds that they often contain less protein and vitamins per serving, and can be heavier in additives like carrageenan or gums.

That’s why Manaker generally recommends avoiding sweetened offerings with added sugar when picking a plant milk. And be wary of the term “natural flavors,” too, if you know you can’t tolerate certain ingredients like carrageenan and other emulsifiers and stabilizers, as they can cause bloating.

Yes, splashing vanilla-flavored oat milk in your tea or cereal sounds delicious, but talk to your doctor before restocking your refrigerator — and that goes for almond milk, coconut milk, pea milk . . . you get the gist.

Listen to Princess Charlotte and Princes George and Louis Sweetly Ask David Attenborough Questions

david attenborough george louis charlotte

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

We learned last week that Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis got to hang out with legendary natural historian David Attenborough in the gardens of Kensington Palace. It turns out, the photos that Prince William and Kate Middleton shared of that adorable event weren’t the only thing to come out of the interaction. This is truly the gift that keeps on giving: The Cambridge children made a video in which they asked Attenborough some questions about animals, and we get to hear their tiny voices!

Prince George asks his question first: “Hello David Attenborough, what animal do you think will become extinct next?”

Attenborough answered by saying he hopes no animal becomes extinct and shared a story about mountain gorillas. “About 40 years ago I was with some mountain gorillas in the center of Africa. Mountain gorillas were then very, very rare; there were only 250 of them left,” he said, before sharing that people around the world donated money to save the species, of which there are now about 1,000. “So you can save an animal if you want to and you put your mind to it,” he said.

Next, it was Charlotte’s turn: “Hello David Attenborough, I like spiders, do you like spiders too?

Attenborough responded that he shares Charlotte’s love of spiders. “Why it is people are so frightened of them?” He added that he thinks it’s because spiders have eight legs, and you never know which direction they’re going to move.

Correct, David Attenborough.

Louis, who turned 2 in April, got the last question. He took a deep breath and asked: “What animal do you like?”

Attenborough answered that monkeys are his favorite. Here’s the heartwarming exchange, in full:

If Fragrance Gives You Headaches, Swap Out These Household Items

If folding load after load of clean laundry tends to give you a headache, you might not just be stressed from your busy to-do list — especially if that chore session comes along with a sneezing fit, too. In fact, you might be experiencing the side effects of a fragrance sensitivity to your detergent or fabric softener.

According to Dr. Denisa E. Ferastraoaru, M.D., an allergy specialist at Montefiore Health System, some common symptoms of fragrance sensitivity include headaches, respiratory symptoms, like sneezing, runny nose, difficulty breathing, or cough, as well as itchy, watery eyes, skin rashes, and itching. “Sometimes you may also experience dizziness or nausea when you are exposed to certain smells,” Dr. Ferastraoaru says.

While these ailments might seem to be representative of allergy symptoms, it’s important to understand that an allergy to a fragrance and a sensitivity to a fragrance are two different things.

For example, Dr. Ferastraoaru says that when you are allergic to a fragrance, one of the fragrance ingredients stimulates your immune system to release meditators to fight the substance, possibly leading to upper and lower respiratory symptoms and skin rashes. “On the other hand, sensitivity to a fragrance does not necessarily trigger the immune system response, but may produce a certain type of irritation. Therefore, to be very precise, only an allergen can cause a true allergy, while irritants cause sensitivities. You may experience symptoms with fragrances when your skin comes in contact with a chemical product, or when you inhale it.”

And just because you’re sensitive to an ingredient in, say, the candle burning on your tabletop, it doesn’t mean you’ll also develop itchy eyes or headaches from your partner’s perfume.

“The symptoms you experience are directly related to the fragrance ingredient you have symptoms with,” Dr. Ferastraoaru says.

“In some individuals, all scents are bothersome, while in others only strong smells are irritating. Finding the culprit ingredient is not easy. Depending on your symptoms (allergic versus sensitivity), your allergist or dermatologist may decide if they need to perform specialized allergy skin tests to help you identify which ingredient triggers your fragrance allergy symptoms.”

When it comes to fragrance sensitivities, though, there isn’t a diagnostic test — so, what’s typically recommended is to avoid products containing fragrance.

Dr. Purvi S. Parikh, MD, an allergist/immunologist with the Allergy and Asthma Network, agrees that if you react to fragrance, fragrance- and dye-free products are “highly recommended.”

So, where to start? First, don’t hesitate to reach out to your doctor with any medical concerns or questions — it’s always better to play it safe and get personalized advice.

Dr. Parikh says that fabric softener, detergent, candles, diffusers, and air fresheners, are some of the most common culprits in people’s homes, but you’ll need to be cognizant of your personal symptoms and when they develop. “You only need to go fragrance-free if they cause symptoms for you, but I would because over time these symptoms can worsen,” Dr. Parikh adds.

Dr. Ferastraoaru adds that you can also find fragrance in cosmetics and cleaning products, and if you develop symptoms when exposed to different fragrances, opt for fragrance free to reduce your chances of triggering symptoms.

Harry Styles Breaks Silence on the Rumors That He’s Playing James Bond

Some might argue that Harry Styles is becoming an icon in his own right. But he won’t be filling the shoes of international British spy and icon James Bond. Per The Daily Mail, the singer will not be replacing Daniel Craig in the role, despite rumors otherwise.

A representative for Styles told the Mail that the rumors that the singer is the next Bond “aren’t even remotely true.” The Mail reports that a source previously said “Harry is deadly serious. He has had a series of high-level meetings about becoming 007. Harry believes he is the final two.” The source continued: “Harry is a new age British man…he’s confident in his own skin and making him Bond would signal the franchise changing with the times.”

Styles is well aware that people would love to see him take on the role of 007, though he’s never seemed to take the idea seriously.

“I mean, who wouldn’t?” Styles said, during an interview with Britain’s Hits Radio when he was asked about his interest in playing Bond. “I grew up watching those. You know, I loved him when I was a kid. So I think it’s kind of everyone’s dream a little bit, right?”

The Mail points out that Styles’s name isn’t the only one that’s been thrown around in relation to the Bond franchise. James Norton, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba and David Beckham have all come up at some point.

Let us all take the appropriate time we need to feel sad that the next Bond will not be Harry Styles. Just another 2020 letdown.

If You Want to Get Stronger Without Equipment, Try This 20-Minute Full-Body HIIT Workout

As you wait for the gym equipment you ordered to get delivered, we’ve got you covered with an efficient total-body HIIT workout that will challenge your strength and endurance. NASM-certified trainer Kelsey Wells of SWEAT app is also the creator of the PWR programs, and this workout is inspired by the new 10-week PWR Zero Equipment program. We’re loving it because every workout takes under 30 minutes to complete.

“My new PWR Zero Equipment program allows you to evenly train your muscle groups without having to use weights through the blend of HIIT cardio and compound strength-based exercises,” Wells told POPSUGAR. No matter your fitness level, anyone can do these workouts because they can be modified or progressed to meet your needs. For example, if you’re a beginner, you can perform the exercises slower or do fewer reps, and if you’re more conditioned, you can perform more reps or do the moves faster to up the intensity, Wells explained.

Whether you’re just getting familiar with training or simply need a program to commit to, Wells has got you covered. If you want a taste of what her 10-week equipment-free program is like, grab some water, get your favorite playlist ready, and check out her 20-minute workout ahead.

Kelsey Wells’s 20-Minute Full-Body Workout

Equipment needed: a yoga mat or a soft surface to train on

Before you jump into the workout, Wells said to make sure that you warm up. She recommends completing three to five minutes of cardio such as jogging or skipping in place. Once you’ve completed the cardio, she recommends completing dynamic stretches such as leg swings, arm circles, and torso twists to increase your range of motion and prevent injury.

This workout is broken up into three parts: a superset, a circuit, and a burnout. First, you’ll complete three rounds of the superset, performing push-ups into side planks and straight-leg raises back-to-back, taking little to no rest in between each exercise. Once you’ve completed the superset, you’ll perform rounds of X planks, ab bikes, and double-pulse squat jumps as a circuit, working for 50 seconds followed by 10 seconds of rest. Take one minute of rest in between each round. Finally, you’ll finish the workout with a minute of nonstop half burpees.

You’re going to be putting in work, so don’t forget to take a few minutes to cool down and return your heart rate to normal afterward. Wells recommends three to fives minutes of walking to lower your heart rate followed by static stretching.

  • Superset one, exercise one: push-ups with side planks: 10 reps (five reps per side)
  • Superset one, exercise two: straight-leg raises: 12 reps

Take one minute of rest before advancing to the circuit.

  • X planks: perform for 50 seconds, then take 10 seconds of rest
  • Ab bike: perform for 50 seconds, then take 10 seconds of rest
  • Double-pulse squat jumps: perform for 50 seconds, then take 10 seconds of rest

After you complete three rounds of the circuit, take one minute of rest before advancing to the burnout.

  • Half burpees: one minute

Vancouver Shop Faulkner is Full of Covetable Pieces From the Past

Photography courtesy of Faulkner.

It re-opens its doors today with a drop of new fall looks.

Since founding his eponymous Vancouver storefront in 2017, London, U.K. transplant James Faulkner has established his business as a purveyor of unique vintage and archival goods. Inspired by the second-hand scene in San Fransisco–where he worked in his early twenties–Faulkner was resolute in differentiating his selection of wares in a city that he confirms has “a really good vintage scene.”

Noting that he’s been fortunate to have “a lot of cool people with cool clothes who support me, and give me their collections”, Faulkner says that he “wanted to do something different” in terms of his shop’s curation of pieces that includes everything from workwear to suiting. “I’m super influenced by Japanese and European fashion, and I base the shop more on styles than brands.”

consignment store
Photography courtesy of Faulkner.

But that’s not to say Faulkner isn’t label conscious; for the store’s re-opening today–after a few months of COVID closure and a refurbishment–you’ll discover a batch of over 100 items including picks from Valentino and Issey Miyake to Vivienne Westwood and Tom Ford. “I really base [my finds] around an ethos of three to four styles; oversized workwear, Japanese streetwear, ‘80s and ‘90s European styles–things like crazy tops and jeans by [Jean Paul] Gaultier, and then more contemporary styles.”

It’s evident that what drives Faulkner is a stylist’s eye, and the awareness of how mixing different aesthetics together can make for a fresh approach to dressing. “How do the pieces look, and how do they come together,” Faulkner says he thinks to himself while searching out wares for the store and its online platform. Some of his current favourites include a 1980s cowboy-style shirt by Gucci, a double-breasted jacket by Celine Homme, again from the ‘80s, and a 1970s suede jacket from Sears.

Faulkner and a local tailor have also collaborated to craft several ‘reworked’ pieces influenced by Japanese streetwear label Kapital and 1950s Americana; expect embroidery and patchwork details to give fabrics from Pendleton, as well as denim materials, a new twist. “A lot of people are doing reworks,” he notes about the growing interest in upcycled garments. “We just wanted to go crazy with it.”

The desire to be different has also drawn Faulkner to connect with creatives like Mescondi and Chrome Destroyer to work on editorials and videos. “I try to stay out of it and let them do what they’re good at,” he says of the approach to these projects. “I say, do what you want, but think of the store. [And] they really run with that…. It doesn’t always have to be about the clothes [but] art is a great way to express what the store is about.”

Photography by Mescondi for Faulkner.

What connects these pursuits is Faulkner’s appreciation of authenticity and individuality–something that’s more crucial than ever when you consider how much a consumer sees in a day. “When you have a store or brand, you have to do you as much as you can,” he says. “The second you start copying people, you’re screwed.”

Gal Gadot’s Trainer Swears by Sprinter Lunges For a Stronger Core and Cardio Training

Image Source: Getty / The Good Brigade

Those heavy-breathing, sweaty, heart-pumping moments in a workout are challenging, but they’re also so rewarding — there’s no denying how hard your body is working. Sprinter lunges always get me to that place.

“Sprinter lunges develop speed [and] power, build muscle mass, improve balance and coordination, strengthen the core, and correct imbalances within the body, while also improving metabolic conditioning (cardio),” Magnus Lygdback, EREPS-certified celebrity trainer to Gal Gadot and Mark Ruffalo, says.

According to Lygdback, this lunge variation targets the entire muscle system that manages your core like your glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, and intrinsic foot muscles. Your hips, knees, spine, ankles, and feet are getting worked, too.

But, don’t let this news excite you to the point of doing sprinter lunges daily. Lygdback says they should only be done once every 3-5 days (no more than 2-3 times a week), to avoid overuse injuries. He adds that the move fits well in any workout intending to develop the glutes or to boost athletic performance.

Listen to your body, too — if you’re unprepared for this dynamic and explosive exercise, know that you can potentially experience knee and lower back pain.

“If you feel uncomfortable with the exercise, prepare yourself with planks or anti-rotational core exercises, as well as reverse lunges and step-ups,” Lygdback says.

“Build your spinal stability with plank variations and dynamic core work. Prepare your knees and hamstrings with split squats, other lunge variations (in multiple directions), squats, standing on one leg, etc.”

Once you’re ready to take sprinter lunges on, Lygdback has the step-by-step instructions below to get you started.

His biggest tip: Remember to keep your shin as vertical over your leg as possible during the lunge portion of the move — you’re shin shouldn’t be over your toes. This will prevent you from using your quad-and knee-strength over the power from your glutes and hips.

Image Source: Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Benjamin Stone

  • Start standing — step your right foot back to a lunge position and place your right hand on the ground.
  • Explosively drive your left heel into the ground to extend your knee and hip, while accelerating your right knee to your chest. Let your left hand rapidly move towards your chest as a reciprocal movement.
  • Reverse the movement to place your right hand and foot back to the ground and repeat.
  • Try to keep the shin of the working leg as vertical as possible throughout.

Hide Your Rats. Roald Dahl’s The Witches Is Coming Just in Time for Halloween.

Hide your kids. Hide your mice. In 2020’s long list of films that are heading straight to streaming, Roald Dahl’s The Witches is landing on HBO Max on October 22. While a straight to streaming release used to mean bad news for a film, we live in times where we’re grateful to land any new film from the comfort of our couch. Pair that with how incredible the trailer looks, and it’s difficult to imagine that this remake of the 1990 film will be anything less than a perfectly wild ride.

Starring Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, and Stanley Tucci, the film follows a boy who finds himself in the crosshairs of a coven of witches. Only with the help of his grandmother can he escape and ensure they can’t turn the entire world population of children into mice. The story seems pretty innocuous, but if you were a kid of the ’90s growing up with the Anjelica Huston version of this movie, you know this story is not one to mess around with. Scores of children are still haunted by Huston, bald and in full prosthetic makeup. Do I still imagine being turned into a mouse and having to call my grandma up for help? Yes. And that’s terrifying because I was never that close with her. But that’s my burden to work out in therapy. Instead, check out the trailer:

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

With Robert Zemeckis at the helm of the film, joined by a team including Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro and Kenya Barris, this new iteration of The Witches looks to be as visually stunning as you’d come to expect from that crew. Here’s to a whole new generation of children being gently terrified and irreparably scarred by Anne Hathaway, floating above them in what is hopefully equally terrifying makeup.

Pink isn’t only for Wednesdays this month.

October means many things – Thanksgiving, Halloween, the final quarter of the year – however most importantly, October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each year, the month is dedicated to raising awareness of and funds for life-saving research for breast cancer through donation campaigns and dedicated products.

Despite incredible advancements in survival rates, according to the Canadian Cancer Council, breast cancer is still the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among Canadian women. The most recent statistics indicate that 1 in 8 Canadian women are expected to develop breast cancer at some point in their life.

Every year fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands release dedicated collections and products for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with a percentage of proceeds being donated to cancer research and prevention. Below, discover the pieces you can shop this year to help make a difference.

    Rethink Breast Cancer

Rethink Breast Cancer, a Canadian breast cancer awareness organization aimed at young women, has tapped more than 20 local and international brands to create pieces for its annual breast cancer awareness collection. Smythe, Deux Lions, BIKO, Ellie Mae, Unika and Gee Beauty are just some of the brands who have partnered with the organization to create limited-edition capsule collections, proceeds from which will be donated to Rethink Breast Cancer’s initiatives. Products include rose gold jewellery pieces, clothing, candles, swimwear, face masks, skincare and more so there’s something for everyone (and everyone you know!).

    Discover the collections here.

    Peloton

Fitness brand Peloton is supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the release of its Stronger capsule collection. The collection is comprised of eight pieces for men and women, and includes a matching sports bra and leggings set, a loungewear set, a T-shirt, tank, exercise shorts and a tote. The brand will donate 20 per cent of the proceeds (up to $25,000) from the collection – which is available to purchase in Canada – to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). Myra Biblowit, the president and CEO of BCRF said in a release, “Thanks to research, we know that exercise and a healthy lifestyle play a critical role in mitigating breast cancer risk. That’s why our partnership with Peloton is especially meaningful – improving women’s health is our shared mission.”

    David Yurman

2020 marks the 12th year that fine jewellery brand David Yurman has teamed up with the BCRF to help raise funds for the organization. This year, the brand is releasing the Renaissance Cable Bracelet in aluminum and pink acrylic, and a Cable Classic Rose Candle. 20 per cent of the purchase price from these items will be donated to the BCRF. Not in the market for a fine jewellery piece but still want to contribute? The brand has also launched a pink rubber Cable Bracelet to be sold for just $25 and 100 per cent of the net profits from the sale of this piece will be donated to the BCRF.

    Estée Lauder Companies

Beauty giant Estée Lauder is going all in on breast cancer awareness this month, with 20 of its brands creating limited edition products or pledging donations in support of the cause. Could Melatonin Be Helpful in Treating COVID-19? Here’s What We Know

After being diagnosed with COVID-19 on Oct. 2, President Donald Trump received several treatments while under the care of medical staff at the White House, including an experimental antibody cocktail, as well as a regimen of over-the-counter medications and supplements, including zinc, vitamin D, aspirin, and melatonin. While melatonin is best known for helping to regulate sleep — something that can be difficult to come by when you’re fighting off a virus that frequently causes a high fever — it may play a very different role in combatting COVID-19.

While COVID-19 is often thought of as a respiratory virus, scientists have argued that it should be treated as an acute inflammatory disease, in which the severity of the symptoms is determined by the body’s ability to regulate its own immune response. One of the most dangerous outcomes is something doctors call a “cytokine storm,” in which the immune system continues releasing proteins called cytokines — which signal immune cells to mount a response — long after the threat of the virus has been neutralized. Without a clear target, the immune cells attack healthy tissues, causing damage to the body’s organs. In some cases, it can be fatal.

There’s some early evidence that melatonin may help regulate the immune system, by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, among other mechanisms. However, there are still a lot of unanswered questions about what role the supplement might play in treating the virus, and how it should be taken in order for it to be both safe and effective. If you’re infected with COVID-19, it’s important to speak with a doctor before taking anything to help manage your symptoms.
