The Powerpuff Girls Are Getting the Live-Action Treatment

Before there were myriad Marvel, DC, and X-Men superhero franchises, there was the sugar, spice, and everything nice of the incomparable Powerpuff Girls. Now, multiple outlets are reporting that the hit Cartoon Network animated series is getting a live-action reboot at The CW. It will reportedly follow superhero sisters Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as they navigate their twenties in Townsville. Ahead, everything we know about the new series, including which Oscar-winning writer is penning the project.

The live-action Powerpuff Girls will follow the trio as twenty-somethings.

The original Powerpuff Girls animated series, created by Craig McCracken, followed kindergarteners Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as they fought crime in the fictional Townsville. This trio’s powers were bestowed upon them by their father, a scientist named Professor Utonium as an accident: Chemical X was added to the “sugar, spice, and everything nice” concoction, granting them powerful abilities.

The live-action Powerpuff Girls will follow the siblings into adulthood, exploring the baggage they’ve accumulated from all those years fighting bad guys in elementary school. A synopsis of the show, via The Hollywood Reporter, reads:

Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes. Now, they’re disillusioned twenty-somethings who resent having lost their childhoods to crimefighting. When the world needs them more than ever, will they agree to reunite?

Veronica Mars writer Heather Regnier and Oscar-winning Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody are writing the show, alongside producer Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon and Supergirl). All three will executive produce the series with Sarah Schechter and David Madden of Berlanti Productions.

This isn’t the first reboot.

Although a live-action version of The Powerpuff Girls has never been made before, this isn’t the show’s first reboot. The original animated series aired from 1998-2005 and received its own movie in 2002. Then, a decade later, a 2016 animated reboot aired on the Cartoon Network. That iteration ran for three seasons and stars Amanda Leighton, Kristen Li, and Natalie Palamides in the lead roles. McCracken is also involved with the animated reboot, although THR reports he’s not part of the live-action version just yet.

No further information is available just yet.

Since the series is still in the works, there’s no casting information or a release date available. Until then, you can watch both the OG Powerpuff Girls and its 2016 re-imagining on Hulu.

My Story: Kiley May on Trans Representation in Media and Creating the Character Roles She Wants to See

    Photograph courtesy of Kiley May

Welcome to My Story, our weekly series dedicated to creatives of colour and their paths to success. By championing these diverse stories and backgrounds, we hope that our understanding of the cultural conversations around beauty and fashion will expand and that respect for our differences will flourish.

Meet Kiley May, a two-spirit transgender actor and multidisciplinary artist from Six Nations of the Grand River reserve in Ontario. Kiley’s acting CV includes a recurring role in the CBC show Coroner and well as her big-screen debut in the blockbuster horror It: Chapter Two. But Kiley’s love for film and television doesn’t stop at playing characters — she also writes them. Passionate about education, representation and diversity, Kiley is also an emerging screenwriter and filmmaker who’s on a mission to create scripts and roles for Indigenous and transgender women with a focus on positive, empowering portrayals. With support from Netflix and mentorship from Toronto’s ImagineNative Film and Media Arts Festival, the largest Indigenous film and media arts festival, Kiley is currently is the pre-production phase of a short film called Disclosure, which is the first in a trilogy of shorts about the experiences of dating as a two-spirit transgender woman. Here, Kiley shares, in her own words, the motivation behind her film project and how she’d liked to see the transgender narrative change in media.

On growing up, and her journey from childhood to adulthood:

“I grew up on Six Nations reserve, which is near the cities of Hamilton, Brantford and the town of Caledonia in Ontario. I have bittersweet memories of growing up there. It shaped me in a lot of ways, good and bad. I love my community, my family, my people, and I acknowledge that’s where I came from and my roots. I had a lot of great experiences but, because I’m a trans person and because I’m queer, I had a lot of tough experiences, specifically being targeted, being bullied. Six Nations is very much of a small town mentality. When I was a teenager, there was a lot of homophobia and transphobia, which I think is a characteristic of a lot of small towns or rural areas, particularly Indigenous communities that have been impacted by colonization. I feel like bullying is such a coming-of-age experience for a lot of queer people. But speaking for myself, I did experience some violence, bigotry and discrimination, even up until a few years ago as an adult person.

Things have improved tremendously, though. My family has been along on a journey with me. They have grown and become allies, whereas before they had homophobic, transphobic attitudes and beliefs. Now, they celebrate me and I’m seeing a shift in my community — in their consciousness. There’s a lot more people living their truths: living out as queer and trans people on the reserve, which is amazing. Like I said, my community shaped me. It instilled my values and my morals. I grew up following the old, ancient Indigenous traditional ways. I have a real soft spot in my heart for my family and community, but I’m still working through all those layers of what I experienced. I left my reserve in 2007 and moved to Toronto, but acknowledge that both places are my home.”

    On identifying as two-spirit:

“That’s a lot to unpack because two-spirit is an ancient identity that pre-dates Canada. I’ve talked to a lot of two-spirit people and I’ve done a lot of my own research digging into the history. What I found is that it’s an identity that exists in a lot of Indigenous communities and nations all across Turtle Island — all across North America — and each community will have their own understanding: their own word in their own language to describe the experience. Their own definition.

This is the simplest way I can sum it up: Being two-spirit is an intersectional identity, which means a person who is Indigenous and LGBTQ. So it is navigating that intersection of those two communities, but it goes so much deeper than that. Historically, two-spirit people were revered and had very sacred, special places in society: roles such as storytellers, artists, warriors and healers. There was a very spiritual, cultural and ceremonial aspect to being two-spirit. But the thing is, not all Indigenous people who are gay or lesbian identify as two-spirit. Some people reject it. I identify as two-spirit because I like the aspect of reclaiming history and reclaiming that ancient reverence and sacredness — the cultural spiritual aspect. I embrace it, but I also identify as queer and transgender.”

On her career path and love for storytelling:

“I’ve carried this love of telling stories and being performative my entire life. I acknowledge that, historically, I come from a people who are storytellers. I come from an oral tradition, so I feel like that’s in me — in my spirit, in my blood. It’s in my ancestral cellular memory. That’s why I left the reserve and went to journalism school at Ryerson University. I wanted to tell my people’s stories. I’ve lived through the ongoing Six Nations Caledonia land dispute and this July marked the 30th anniversary of the Oka Crisis, so I see the importance of speaking up for my people — to be a voice for what we are experiencing. Through journalism school, I realized that I had more of a love for creative writing: I love spoken word poetry. After I finished school, though, I didn’t write for many years until very recently, and began writing for outlets like Vice and Huffington Post. I’m re-entering my writing career. Telling stories feels like my purpose.”

    On getting into filmmaking:

“My love of storytelling extends to being a filmmaker and screenwriter. As a trans person, an Indigenous person and an actor, I found myself being very disheartened and frustrated — just fed up — with the representation of Indigenous and trans people not only in film and TV, but in the general media and popular culture. And I’m the type of person to do something about it: I get inspired and motivated by what makes me angry or frustrated and would rather be a solution than just complain about a problem. That pushed me into wanting to be a filmmaker and screenwriter, because I wanted to contribute to more authentic portrayals of my communities and my experiences.”

    On her short film trilogy:

“I developed this as a starting off point — to get my feet wet in filmmaking in a sense — with the goal of learning how to screen write, produce and eventually direct. I have long terms goals of doing feature films and TV series. This project explores transgender attraction, desire and love from the perspective of a trans woman. Each short film follows the different stages of a trans woman’s dating experiences, with Part One called Disclosure. The word ‘disclosure’ means to open up, to reveal, to make known, and disclosure is an experience that I have as a trans person: the act of basically coming out or telling someone I’m trans — sometimes for safety reasons. It’s quite an experience and I wanted to create a conversation around it. Disclosure is about a trans woman named Libbie who meets a guy on the street. He approaches her and asks her out on a date, and then Libbie has to decide if, when and how to disclose her transgender status. In the end, he actually discloses something to her too. There’s a lot to unpack with the politics of disclosure. There’s lots of thoughts and feelings around it.”

On her drive behind the project:

“What motivates me to write trans stories is to contribute to more positive, hopeful and authentic characters, because oftentimes when trans women are depicted, it’s through a straight, cis-gender male gaze, and it’s usually really problematic. I did this for myself as an actor, to create opportunities and roles that I love and want to see on the screen but I also did it for my trans sisters. I did it for my trans community to have their romantic comedy moment. To see a trans woman on screen being adored, going on a date and having a kiss in a park. I want to shift the narrative of transgender representation from what historically has been tragic and victimizing to one that’s thriving and about love and happiness. And I hope that the film Disclosure will create a larger conversation about what disclosure actually is and means for trans people, and also for the cis-gender, heterosexual men who are trans attracted. There’s a lot to talk about and I want to normalize transgender attraction and love — crucial topics I feel we never discuss.”

    On trans representation in media:

“I feel like I started acting and entered the film industry at the right time because this was during Laverne Cox in Orange is the New Black. She really changed the game. When I think of trans representation before Laverne Cox, there basically wasn’t any. After her, trans representation increased a lot. Things were rapidly improving when I came into the industry. I haven’t experienced big barriers, such as hard rejection, unlike actors five or ten years ago and I’m grateful for that.

What I have experienced, though, is a lack of creativity or opportunities by screenwriters, producers and directors, people who are straight, cis-gender, white men, who don’t really create enough stories or don’t tell good stories. Like, for a while now, casting agents or directors have only really thought of trans performers in a limited sense. They often only see us as trans or queer characters, not as multi-faceted and multi-dimensional performers. Then there’s the terrible history of cis-gender men playing trans women, which is really problematic and a whole other conversation. I would like for people to open up and expand their minds, and to think that queer performers can play anything, which is why I’m hustling and working to get into a position of power — screenwriter, director, producer — to create opportunities. I want to have the right leverage to help shift the narrative.”

    Have People’s Shopping Habits Changed?

Before COVID-19, Stephanie A.*, a corporate lawyer from Washington, DC, considered herself an impulse shopper. Her office was located close to the city’s premiere shopping district and she often found herself popping into H&M or Ann Taylor to browse for clothes, leaving with a new, office-appropriate skirt or dress.

But after five months of stay-at-home orders, A. has successfully reigned in her spontaneous approach to shopping. Not only does she no longer have the temptation of stores beckoning on her way home from work, A.’s mother passed away in April due to COVID, which caused her to seriously reflect on her life. “It made me realize that my impulse buying was me trying to find some kind of joy or happiness whereas now, I feel, what do clothes even matter when we’re surrounded by death all the time?”

“Coronavirus has forced us to be more intentional about every aspect of our lives,” she continues. In tandem with the pandemic, the moral reckoning caused by the George Floyd protests affected A. deeply, and she now makes the effort to research every company she intends to purchase from, prioritizing Black-owned and sustainable businesses. “It was always my goal to purchase sustainable clothing but now that COVID and the protests force us to reflect on how our actions impact vulnerable people, I find myself thinking more, ‘How I can try to do as little harm as possible?’”

Read this next: Vintage Shopping Is Forever Changed—But Will It Survive?

In fact, “do as little harm as possible” has emerged as a crucial guiding principle since COVID-19 appeared. From wearing face masks to prevent the transmission of infectious droplets to protesting against the disproportionate number of Black people killed by the police, we’re currently living through a moment in history where it’s of utmost importance to consider how one’s own actions affect those around us. This moment is one of dual pandemics—COVID-19 and anti-Black racism. “As Black people, we’re all we have,” emphasizes A. “We can’t really rely on the government or other groups to support us, so it’s important that we support ourselves.”

While A.’s pandemic-induced volte-face feels warranted given her circumstances, she’s far from the only recovering shopaholic who has used the pandemic as an opportunity to reflect on how their consumer tendencies intersect with their values. According to a study by global professional services company Accenture, 83% of Canadian consumers are limiting the number of times they shop and 45% report making more sustainable choices when shopping. “The notion of disposable clothing and buying a different outfit for every occasion has certainly gone out of people’s minds,” Kelly Askew, Managing Director of Accenture Strategy in Canada told Retail Insider.

“The coronavirus has forced us to be more intentional about every aspect of our lives”

Melissa Mendes, a producer at an ad agency in Toronto, describes her pre-pandemic shopping habits as “average”; somewhere on the spectrum between shopaholic and Benedictine monk. But after the pandemic threw her job security into question, Mendes refrained from spending money on anything besides rent and food for the entire months of March and April.

Mendes’ fear of losing her job did not come to pass, but her period of financial uncertainty allowed her to completely reevaluate her spending habits. Now, Mendes will only purchase an item of clothing if it adheres to three qualities: versatile, timeless and compelling. Using this criteria, she’s been able to pare her shopping back significantly and has only acquired only three new items since March—a Maryam Nassir Zadeh bag and two vintage dresses from Etsy.

Read this next: Is It Even OK to Shop Online Right Now?

“I used to treat shopping as a coping mechanism for whenever I feel anxious,” says Tatiana Tenreyro, a culture editor in Brooklyn-by-way-of Puerto Rico. “If I was going out at night with my friends, I needed an outfit that made me feel good, so I spent hours shopping online, basically spending a lot more money than I should have on clothes. Now it feels strange to even think about that.” Tenreyro cut back her emotional spending and now only buys staple wardrobe items she is confident she will wear multiple times. But what began as a conscious choice has turned into a necessity—she recently found out her contract position isn’t being renewed and estimates she’ll need to cut down on spending even further.

It was #BlackoutTuesday that galvanized Kirstie Gerrard, a stay-at-home mom from Thousand Oaks, California, to shift her shopping habits. “I feel like public policy has really let us down and the government isn’t necessarily doing enough to lift these communities up so if we can each contribute by using our purchasing power, then I think that’s really important.” The pandemic has lessened Gerrard’s urgency to acquire clothing and she now takes the time to research each item she likes to find out if there’s an ethical or sustainable alternative. Currently, she’s in the early stages of setting up her own online boutique dedicated to stocking exclusively POC- and women-owned brands.

“Now that COVID-19 and the protests force us to reflect on how our actions impact vulnerable people, I find myself thinking more, ‘How I can try to do as little harm as possible?’”

Rachel Romu, a model, musician and accessibility advocate with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome from Thunder Bay, Ont., isn’t sure when they’ll ever shop again. As an immunocompromised person, they’re simply not comfortable going into stores not knowing how many people have touched the clothing, and with their tall, willowy frame, shopping online isn’t a reasonable option. While supporting Black-owned businesses was always on their agenda—the last purchase they made was five pairs of stilettos in different colours by House of Hayla to wear for modelling gigs—Romu notes that shopping can be a form of escapism. “Shopping can be an avoidance-type pattern that stops you for recognizing what is going on, whether it’s instability in your own life or instability in the larger community due to injustices that folks face,” they say. For many of those who previously shopped to avoid the realities of the world, that’s no longer an option. The heightened awareness of how police violence disproportionately impacts Black people’s lives has strengthened many white people’s ability to sit with discomfort, Romu suggests, and they are beginning to unravel the ways in which they’ve been complicit with racism.

“At the beginning of the pandemic, it seemed anecdotally like there was a big shift going on with the way people consume clothes,” says Elizabeth Cline, a New-York based journalist and sustainability expert whose latest book, The Conscious Closet, provides the building blocks to achieving an ethical wardrobe. “But according to the US Department of Commerce, retail spending was back up to pre-pandemic levels in July so I actually question that there’s been some wholesale shift away from fast fashion towards ethical consumption.” In other words, conscious consumers newly armed with spreadsheets listing Black-owned businesses may not be quite enough to create lasting change in an industry well known for its tenuous relationship with accountability. (It was only February 2020 when Prada agreed to put staff through racial equity training after an ill-advised window display featured items depicting racist blackface imagery.)

Read this next: All the Fashion Brands That Have Been Accused of Racism (Plus, Where to Shop Instead)

Cline’s predictions mirror a study by consulting firm EY suggesting that nearly half of Canadian consumers expect their spending to return to normal over the next few months. 25% of consumers are expected to be “cautiously extravagant” in their purchases in light of the ongoing pandemic, 23% will opt to stay frugal and 15% will continue cutting down expenses. The smallest number of consumers—only 9%—intend to go “back with a bang” and increase their spending habits once the throttle of the pandemic releases.

What Cline has found heartening, though, is the upwelling of consumers willing to go further than examining their own habits and engage in political activism bargaining for change. On #BlackoutTuesday, when countless brands posted Black squares on Instagram as a way of silencing themselves to make room for Black voices, many consumers refused to be placated by an empty gesture and instead demanded companies demonstrate a tangible commitment to change by opening their pursestrings and donating to anti-racist causes.

Other initiatives, like the 15 Percent Pledge, which asks retailers to commit to stocking Black-owned designers as 15% of their inventory, and the #PayUp campaign, which pressures brands to pay suppliers for stock they had already ordered, further demonstrates that consumers are beginning to fight back against the firmly-entrenched racism and inequality in the fashion industry.

“I think the lasting impact of the pandemic is going to be people examining the systems and structures behind fast fashion and calling them into question,” says Cline. As far as outcomes go, this one isn’t so bad.

The Physical Benefits of Pool Yoga Go Far Beyond Cooling Off From the Summer Sun

professional asian woman practice yoga sequence eagle pose (Garudasana) close up in swimming pool, aqua yoga blue water

Yoga doesn’t have hard-and-fast rules. The practice is all about making the body feel good — and adding a pool to the equation can do more than just help you cool off in the summer heat.

“Pool yoga harnesses the resistance and buoyancy properties of the water to create a non-impact, total-body workout, that ups your calorie burn, increases muscle tone and flexibility, and improves your circulation. It also reduces inflammation, muscle and joint pain, and post-workout soreness,” certified yoga instructor and the creator of H2yOga Sue Gisser says.

The natural resistance created in a pool not only massages your muscles but also helps you tone. That’s why submerging your practice in water can calm the nervous system and promotes rest, healing, and restoration, Gisser adds.

Take achy joints, for example — pool yoga is a great way to relieve some pain.

Depending on how deep you go, Gisser says that the water can absorb up to 80 percent of your weight, which can encourage your muscles to relax and take some pressure off of your joints. With more control over your movements, you can work out longer and harder than on land.

“If you have access to a pool, get in, and start playing. Your body is always your best teacher. Start in any yoga pose – your body will tell you where it wants to move next, what needs to be stretched, what feels good, what doesn’t, when [and] how to adjust to keep you from falling,” Gisser says.

You have the freedom to design your own pool flow, and Gisser is sharing tips to help you get started.

“About chest level is deep enough to give support and adequate resistance for most standing poses, flows, and balances. But if you’re using buoyancy devices to do a floating yoga practice, you can practice in deep water, too.” Gisser says.

Say you want to flow from Warrior II pose to Triangle Pose — Gisser notes that as you transition back and forth, inhale during pose one and exhale through pose two. Then, switch the breath for the next two minutes (exhale in Warrior II), allowing your body and the water to guide your pace. These poses can be done any way that’s easiest for you, so you can do them floating and modify them so your face isn’t underwater — which is essential during your inhale portion of a pose.

When you float, circular motions make you spin around — Gisser wants you to embrace the movement. Here, you’re creating a whirlpool propelled by your core and the water.

Obviously, poses such as Downward Facing Dog need to be modified. For this move, Gisser suggests two solutions: flip it upside down by practicing Boat pose instead, or turn it on its side by performing a straight-legged Side Crow.

“Have fun, experiment, trust yourself — if it feels good, you’re doing it right,” Gisser says. But she always suggests wearing sunscreen, keeping hydrated, not eating right before a flow, and not swimming alone.

When asked if there are any downsides to pool yoga, Gisser stated: “You feel so good, and so free, and have so much fun doing it, you never want to stop. If you have other things to do, I guess that could count as a disadvantage.”

Selena Gomez Just Became an Investor in Serendipity Ice Cream and Released Her Own Flavor: ‘It’s Heaven’

Selena Gomez has an HBO Max quarantine cooking show, Selena + Chef, which just came out earlier this month, and she’s days away from releasing her and BLACKPINK’s single “Ice Cream.” So it only makes sense that Gomez further expanded her foray into the world of food by literally investing in a fancy, super-premium ice cream company and making her own flavor.

Gomez announced on her Instagram this afternoon that she is ice cream brand Serendipity’s newest partner. Serendipity ice cream is, of course, affiliated with the famous New York City restaurant Serendipity3, which is acclaimed for its frozen hot chocolate and many decadent desserts.

Gomez’s childhood memories there in part led to her investing in its ice cream brand. “I grew up going to the iconic @serendipity3nyc restaurant so I couldn’t be more excited to join the ownership team,” she wrote. “In honor of the release of ICE CREAM with @blackpinkofficial, I created Cookies and Cream Remix… made with pink vanilla ice cream as a nod to the girls!”

In the video she posted, she explains the flavor she created while seemingly getting ready on the set of the music video for “Ice Cream.”

“This is my flavor at Serendipity,” she started. “It’s called Cookies and Cream Remix—that’s me [on the box]—and it has pink vanilla ice cream, with thick fudge swirl and brown cream-filled cookie pieces. So basically, it’s heaven, and every bite is delicious.”

Gomez’s Serendipity flavor Cookies and Cream Remix will be available in grocery stores, convenience stores, and other food retailers, along with online at SerendipityBrands.com starting this Friday. It will sell for $5.99.

Gomez gave a big hint about her Serendipity collaboration when she gave a tour of her refrigerator on Instagram’s Reels earlier this summer. Her freezer was filled with ice cream from the brand.

Jennifer Lopez Just Teased Us With a Sneak Peek of Her Upcoming Beauty Brand

    I’ll take five of everything.

If you’ve long wanted to wake up looking like JLo, then you’re about to be one step closer to experiencing that. Over the weekend, Jennifer Lopez announced she is launching her own beauty brand by sharing a sunkissed selfie on Instagram with the caption, “Sunset glow…” followed by “#JLoBeauty coming soon.”

Whilst the Grammy Award-winning artist shared no other details, a closer look at the photo suggests that the line might include bronzer, highlighter and eyeshadow, as well as a neutral lip gloss. It’s not clear whether or not skincare will be part of the line-up but I would honestly buy 100 bottles of whatever JLo is putting on her face in a heartbeat. The post has received over one million likes in the 15 hours since it was posted, suggesting I am not the only one who feels this way.

The line won’t be Lopez’s first foray into beauty however  – back in 2018 she collaborated on a line with Inglot Cosmetics. Plus, let us never forget the Glow by JLo fragrance era of 2002 (what a time that was).

It’s set to be a big few months for celeb-backed beauty brands with the launch of Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty range mere days away in Canada, as well as Alicia Keys’ forthcoming beauty brand in partnership with E.l.f. Beauty. The latter was announced earlier this month and though no specific product details were revealed, E.l.f. Beauty CEO Tarang Amin said that it is “a culmination of Keys’ personal skincare journey.”

Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift’s Complete 13+ Year Friendship Timeline

Neither Taylor Swift nor Selena Gomez are strangers to their drama making headlines, whether it’s due to a breakup or a public feud. But throughout their careers, they’ve never stopped publicly supporting each other. Since becoming friends while both dating Jonas brothers in 2008, they’ve danced at awards shows, performed onstage together, and most recently, hyped the other’s new music. Swift even made a surprise appearance on Gomez’s new HBO Max cooking show Selena + Chef. Below, relive a celeb bond that’s built to last.

In a 2017 interview with KIIS FM UK, Gomez opened up about how she and Swift met, and it’s rooted in the early days of their careers. “We actually dated the Jonas Brothers together! It was hysterical,” Gomez told the hosts, referring to her relationship with Nick and Swift’s with Joe. “It was amazing, because she was the girl with the big curly hair and all the bracelets and the cowboy boots. And I was definitely up-and-coming, and we just clicked,” she added. “It was the best thing we got out of those relationships.”

In an interview with Seventeen, Gomez was asked who she turns to for love advice. (She was rumored to be dating Taylor Lautner months before he would briefly date Swift.) Every single problem I ever have is healable by Taylor Swift,” she said. “If I ever I have an issue, Taylor has gone through it, because she’s older than me, and she gives the most thought-out answers. And what I love about Taylor is that she does believe in the whole love story and Prince Charming and soul mates. Because of her, I haven’t lost faith. We literally talk every day.”

And your life is commented on and your life is written about and fictionalized and all that. I made that bitch famous.” Swift said while accepting, “I want to say to all the young women out there: There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame, but… someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there…”

In 2017, Gomez and Swift’s friendship was kept pretty quiet, other than eagle-eyed fans spotting a Swift easter egg in an episode of 13 Reasons Why, which Gomez produces. She also can be seen in Gomez’s “Bad Liar” music video.

But at the end of the year, Gomez publicly honored Swift’s 28th birthday with a small video and touching caption. “I’m glad you were born,” she wrote on Instagram. “You write all the thoughts some aren’t able to articulate. (ME!) Thank you for giving a voice to this world that is authentic and inspiring. I wish some knew how big your heart actually is.. it’s fierce, bold and freaking wild with light. After the performance Gomez gave a moving speech about her friendship with Swift to the thousands in attendance:

“Are you guys having a good night? I have to say thank you to my best friend of about 12 years, almost 13, and the reason why she has been one of my best friends is because this person has never ever judged a single decision I’ve made. She’s always met me where I’ve been. She’s encouraged me when I’ve had nothing to be encouraged about, and I don’t know if I would be as strong as I am if I didn’t have you and your family because you’ve changed my life. And—she’s going to kill me after—but honestly, thank you for the bottom of my heart for supporting someone who I know is the most beautiful, strong, independent woman I’ve ever met. So thank you as a best friend.”

A source told E! at the time that Gomez “really leans on Taylor and considers her one of her best friends,” particularly in the aftermath of her treatment for her mental health.

“Selena and Taylor have been in touch since Selena left her treatment and are very close,” the source added. “Taylor has reached out several times and has shown her support and love.” The two are in a “really good place” and remain close despite consistent travel for work.

    July 2019

Then came Swift’s drama with Scooter Braun, Bieber’s manager, who acquired the rights to her music catalog (first six albums’ masters) from Big Machine Label with his purchase of the record company. Swift penned an open letter, calling the situation the “worst case scenario.” Then Bieber posted his own response. In turn, Swift took to Tumblr to seemingly confirm that Bieber had cheated on Gomez.

She liked a Tumblr post that said, “‘we haven’t gotten to communicate our differences’ you cheated on her best friend and then publicly sided with the man who made revenge porn against her was she supposed to invite you over for tea??? Fuck outta here.”

After the late October release of Gomez’s new single “Lose You to Love Me,” Swift praised the song on Instagram. “This song is a perfect expression of healing and my absolute favorite song she’s put out yet. A triumph,” Swift wrote on her stories, which Gomez posted to her own.

Swift also expressed her excitement during an interview on New Music Daily With Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1. “She came over, she played me the video. I’m so proud of her,” she said. “She’s been through so much. I’ve watched so much happen in her life and had a front row seat to so much, and I’m so proud of her. She is such a revelation because now she’s making her best stuff.” Swift added:

“I am 100 percent convinced this is the best thing she’s done so far,” she continued. “Just from my perspective as her friend, I’ve just never been more proud. The things that she’s overcome, the situations that she’s risen above. It’s been a long time that we’ve been friends, and she’s the best. I’m really excited because when somebody has had great life experience, has had really tough things they’ve had to go through, and they can process that and make art that’s going to help other people, that’s what kind of song this is.”

A potential snag in Swift and Gomez’s friendship came a few days later when Gomez seemingly plugged Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS shapewear line on IG stories. “Legit so freaking comfortable @skims,” she wrote over a photo of herself wearing a pair.

You have taught me so much, walked through all of this with me, STAYED and you remind me to be a better human being. I’m on your side for life.”

After years of friendship, a Gomez-Swift duet could be on its way. On the Shelley Rome radio show, Gomez was asked if her and Swift ever had plans to collaborate musically. “Yeah! I mean super casual,” she said. “We’ve never been like no or never talked about it. It’ll happen when it happens, if it does there’s no pressure. She’s been my friend for 13 years. It would be awesome.”

Later that month, Gomez stepped into the drama surrounding Swift, Big Machine Records’ CEO Scott Borchetta, and Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun. Swift penned an open letter airing her grievances with her former label and new owner of her first six albums. This prompted Gomez to release her own statement on the matter, via her Instagram Story.

Her statement in defense of Swift read:

My heart is so heavy right now. It makes me sick and extremely angry. (I don’t mind if there may be retaliation) this is my opinion. It’s greed, manipulation, and power. There is no heart or thought of anyone else. No respect for the words my friend has written since she was a 14-year-old in her bedroom.

You’ve robbed and crushed one of our best song writers of our time an opportunity to celebrate all of her music with her fans and the world.

I have known Taylor for 13 years. She is the most dedicated, fearless, fiesty [sic], strongest woman I’ve ever known. People can say bitch but what I’m saying to you is that’s called a woman with true identity and strength who takes no shit. I listened to fearless before it came out and I just remember us jumping on a bed and she was just sparkling. ✨ -so proud of her diary being read by the whole world. Nervous of people not liking it… but that became one of the biggest records – an album that saved so many young woman who felt alone. Have a broken heart. Who were healing. Those who felt invisible. Gave a voice to those who didn’t know that they had one all along. Believing in dreams again. I continued to see how she has constantly challenged her self to create a beautiful life that belong to just her. So I can tell you first hand the MOST important thing to Taylor is her family, love, her fans, and her MUSIC. I really hope there is a change of heart over this unfortunate situation.

Seeing my best friend (or any of my friends) be constantly pulled down is the worst feeling. Taylor fights. She will never stop fighting. People grow from choices. Some will stay exactly the same. I just want a change of heart. I love you.

    December 2019

Although Gomez wasn’t able to attend Swift’s Christmas-themed 30th birthday party while promoting her new album in Paris, she did write her a heartfelt tribute on social media. “Love living many many many years of life with you. You mean the world to me. You help me become better everyday. Happy 30th, @taylorswift,” she wrote. Swift reposted the message on her own Instagram Story and added an “I love you” sticker.

One of the interviews to emerge from Gomez’s press tour for Rare revealed Swift had gotten emotional when listening to Bieber breakup songs from the record. Gomez recounted the experience of playing “Lose You to Love Me” and “Look at Her Now” for Swift and her mother, Andrea to KISS UK. “I was with her when I played her some of it,” Gomez began. “I’ll never forget when I did play the video for ‘Lose You to Love Me’ and ‘Look at Her Now’ at her house with her parents, and it was one of the coolest experiences because I’ve been friends with her for over a decade and love her family as well so I was like, ‘Do you just maybe see the video?’ and she’s like, ‘Amazing, of course.’ It was so hysterical. She just started turning off every single light off in the kitchen. And I was like, ‘This is not that intense, Taylor.'”

This content is imported from YouTube. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Gomez continued, “And then she played it and her and her mom just started crying. Like, just tears and tears and all of a sudden, it stopped, and it’s going to make me cry thinking about it because it wasn’t about how great the song was—which is a lot, coming from her—it was just that they had been on that journey with me intimately, and they were crying because of how proud they were for me stepping into a whole new era of my life and it not involving the horrible things—the abuse, the emotional chaos. It felt like I had a huge sigh of relief and to see her and her mom feel that way, it was very sweet. It’s like an older sister and an aunt proud of their [friend]. It felt great to have people I love see it as that.”

    January 2020

Gomez wasn’t by Swift’s side for her PDA-filled Golden Globes date with Joe Alwyn. But there was no need to worry about the pair’s close bond. In a new interview with WSJ magazine, both Gomez and Swift spoke about their longtime friendship. Gomez confirmed that they had become pals while both dating Jonas Brothers—Swift with Joe Jonas and Gomez with Nick. “We clicked instantly and, man, that was my girl,” Gomez remembered. She later added, “We both went through sh*t at the same time. She taught me a lot about how I should be treated at a young age.”

Swift felt similarly about Gomez. “There has always been this quality of sisterhood, and I don’t say that in a basic way,” Swift said. “I knew from when I met her, I would always have her back. In my life, I have the ability to forgive people who have hurt me. But I don’t know if I can forgive someone who hurts her.”

Gomez said that while some may feel like they understand her friendship with Swift, it’s more private than it looks. “There’s so much of my friendship with Taylor that people don’t know about because we don’t necessarily feel the need to post about everything we do,” she explained. “She has showed up for me in ways that I would have never expected. Flown in because I was hurt and was going through something. Stuff that was going on with my family. It’s been proven year after year and in every moment of my life that she is one of my best friends in the world. We don’t agree on everything, but we respect each other with everything.”

And prior to the release of Rare, Gomez said Swift supported her new music implicitly. “I remember Taylor said when I played her some of the new songs, ‘I feel like I’m seeing who you were before this [the Justin Bieber heartbreak and everything].’ That makes me happy. I like feeling like that girl again,” Gomez revealed.

When it came time for the January 10 release of Rare, Swift was quick to publicly congratulate Gomez. “Congratulations to @selenagomez and everyone who had a hand in creating this…Make sure to buy/stream/support this work of art and the beautiful soul who created it,” Swift wrote on her Instagram Story. Gomez posted a screenshot of Swift’s story on her own Instagram.

She highlighted “Lover,” saying, “There’s nothing really to say other than this is another song that shows her ability to take it back to the old, to also combine it with her challenging to do new things with her music.” Gomez added, “I’ll always, not even biased, just think she is one of the greatest songwriters.”

    July 2020

Another day, another project to support. When asked about her dream artist to work with, Gomez replied, “I’ll say there’s a few artists for sure, but I’ve always dreamt of doing a song with Taylor. I mean, we both wanted to do that. It’s just—everything remains in our friendship, you know? And so, it’s so—It just feels like we’re family. I’ve known her for 13 or 14 years now. So she’s been my best friend. While fans await a new Gomez album, she did launch her latest TV project—her new HBO Max cooking show Selena + Chef. Out of everything that I’ve done in my career, this is the most outstanding thing I’ve done,” Gomez began before revealing Swift on FaceTime.

When Gomez showed her culinary creation to Swift, the singer responded, “Dude, I’m so proud of you. Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for you to become obsessed with cooking?”

The Best 9 Facial Cleansing Brushes for a Deep Clean

By now, you should 100% know that going to bed with your makeup on is the ultimate skincare sin. But did you know that so is washing your face in the shower (a big no-no because the water is often way too hot) and not washing your hands before you wash your face because, errr germs?

That’s where facial cleansing brushes come in. Not only do they have remove makeup and exfoliate, but if cleaned and stored properly—make sure to read those directions! — they can be a bit more sanitary…hence eliminating future breakouts. Sensitive skin types (i.e. prone to eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis) should opt for those with softer bristles and consider working brushes into their routine bi-weekly versus daily to start. Unsure if it’s the *right* tool for you? Chat up your derm to get their expert opinion.

Overall, the best brushes have the same general process: Remove your makeup, apply cleanser to wet skin, and massage along your face in circular motions for a minute or so. The results? Exfoliated, smooth, and clear skin. From the revamped classic Clarisonic to the new wave silicone-only PMD, here are 9 brushes ELLE.com editors have tried and loved—plus a few other highly reviewed models.

If you’re a Clarisonic stan, this is the replacement facial cleansing brush for you. Inspired by the technology that’s used on air hockey tables (yes, you read that right) this soft-bristled brush is our ELLE associate beauty editor’s latest obsession. It creates a fantastic lather—even when you’re using an oil-based cleanser—but doesn’t splatter everywhere as you’re gliding it across your face. It’s battery powered, which may seem like a draw-back, but it helps to serve as a reminder: whenever the batteries are out that also means it’s time to change the brush head.

      Tips of the trade:

      • Don’t over cleanse if you are wearing makeup. If can be tempting to go hard, but over-sloughing can leave your skin raw.
      • There’s only one brush, but it’s universal for all skin types, including acne-prone and sensitive.
      • The oval-shaped brush makes it easy to get into tight but important areas like the corner of the nose.
      • Use it on the tops of your hands once a week (and always wear sunscreen) to keep them looking youthful.
      • Skip out on chemical exfoliators like BHA, PHA and AHA’s—since this already act like an exfoliator. You don’t want or need to go overboard. Less is more kids.

        $32.00

If you’re worried about a battery or chargeable device being too harsh on your skin, this manual, responsibility-made brush (p.s. it features 100% cruelty-free synthetic fibers) might be your best best. The innovatively designed removable head is comprised of a soft fiber and silicone blend for gentle exfoliation and effective deep pore cleansing – leaving your complexion cleaner than ever, without feeling squeaky clean. One reviewer describes the brush as if “the bristles of a Clarisonic and the silicone of a Foreo had a baby.” The detachable brush head makes cleaning pretty easy, simply swivel, rinse and dry. Anisa also has their own branded cleanser, Purify, that removes excess makeup, oils, and residue without any water needed.

        Tips of the trade:

        • The brush head is removable for easy cleaning. Just make sure to air dry before using again.
        • A little cleanser goes a long way— focus on putting your product of choice directly onto the silicone ring before gently massaging in circular motions.
        • To avoid staining the bristles, rinse the brush thoroughly after each use.

          • Can be used wet or dry to buff in skincare products before rinsing.

The cult-favorite Japanese skincare brand’s luxurious cleansing brush is the perfect hybrid of silky-soft, finely tapered bristles and silicone cushions made to gently message the skin. A ergonomic, curved handle allows users to grip without slip, and breeze over natural facial contours. It also allows for gentle facial massage (great for microcirculation) and overall skin vitality-meets-radiance.

              Tips of the trade:

              • Make sure to use included cap to protect the brush’s bristles. One reviewer said with proper care her brush lasted nearly 10 years. #Impressive
              • Don’t overload on cleanser, the bristles were made to create maximum foam.Due to the super soft bristles, this brush isn’t as effective at exfoliation.
              • Like all of the cleansing brushes, use in circular motion for an effective cleanse.

                £169.00

The incredible silicone material is what sets this cleansing brush apart . It’s non-abrasive, gentle, and easy to clean. Very easy to clean! Plus, it lasts for months after a full charge so you don’t have to worry about it dying if you travel often. Foreo delivers around 8,000 T-Sonic pulsations per minute through the silicone touch-points. The T-sonic technology is designed to penetrate deep in the layers of your skin for a strong cleansing. The Luna comes in four colors and looks great in any top #shelfie.

                Tips of the trade:

                • The product is small and sits upright so it makes storage easy.
                  • It doesn’t have a timer, so set your own alarm for about one minute.
                  • Because of the silicone brush, don’t use clay-based, silicone-based, or grainy cleansers, exfoliators, or scrubs. The silicone nubs are tough enough on their own.
                  • Instead, opt for a gel-based cleanser to get the job done.

                    7. Cleansing by Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush

Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush System

                    Clinique

                    $22.00

The first facial brush from beauty giant Clinique delivers. The brush was developed by dermatologists to serve all skin types and provide a gentle cleanse. I have to say, my pores were noticeably less visible while using this product. The unique tapered head also lets you target hard to reach areas like beside your nose or on your lower chin. Unlike the other brushes that recommend one minute sessions, this brush has a 30-second timer so you’ll never over-scrub. The major criticism for this product comes from Amazon users. A number of customers complained that the brush’s use was very short-lived. The product seemed to die or break too easily for some shoppers.

                    Tips of the trade

                    • Replacement brushes cost $27.
                    • The charger holds charge for hours so you can take it on the go.
                    • The tilted head can help reach difficult areas.

                      8. Proactiv Charcoal Pore Cleansing Brush

                      Charcoal Pore Cleansing Brush

                      Proactiv

                      $55.00

Proactiv could sell me on anything in middle school, but things have changed since I was giving pubescent acne everything it could handle. I went back to ol’ faithful and tried this brush on a whim—it was surprising wonderful. Highlights: The bristles are long and exaggerated so it feels like a delightful tickle on your face. The brush also vibrates to stimulate my skin cells and doesn’t just oscillate like other brushes on the market. My main issue with this was after a few months it began to not work or function properly. I must say because it was portable, I was throwing it around and not treating it with the respect it deserves. Again, a me problem, but if you want something heavy-duty and durable, this might not be the brush for you.

                      Tips of the trade:

                      • Replacement brushes cost $10.
                      • Great to include in your nightly routine if you’re trying to conquer acne.

                        9. Olay ProX Advanced Cleansing System with Facial Brush

                        Advanced Facial Cleansing Brush System

                        Olay

                        $44.95

A product that delivers bang for your back. The Olay brush provides a deep clean and exfoliation that’s perfect on all skin types. Amazon readers compare the brush to the one from Clarisonic and see similar results after continual use. The Olay product is quite small and only comes with two settings: high and low. It’s definitely a cheaper version of more expensive brushes, but it’s a good entry-level device at a totally approachable price. The brush doesn’t use sonic vibrations, but a two-speed rotating system to cleanse the skin.

                        Tips of the trade:

                        • Replacement brushes cost $10.
                        • Invest in backup brushes as they will go fast.
                        • Olay recommends using an anti-aging moisturizer with this product.

New Mentorship Program RAISEfashion Aims to Bolster Black Talent

Several months ago when I interviewed Harlem’s Fashion Row founder Brandice Daniel, the advocate for designers of color spoke frankly: “I learned pretty early on that press alone doesn’t pay the bills,” she told me. To Daniel, mentorship was just as crucial as access and funding. Now, thanks to a partnership with RAISEfashion, “We have the solution,” Daniel said in a press release announcing the formation of this groundbreaking collective, which aims to combat the institutional barriers to entry and success that have disproportionately plagued Black design talent.

RAISEfashion’s founding Board of Directors is comprised of eight leaders whose aim is to advise and mentor Black designers in a pro-bono capacity while lifting the lid on what can be a very insular industry especially in areas such as sales, branding, content, and sustainability. Among them are CEO and creative director Carly Cushnie, designer Jonathan Simkhai, retail executives Roopal Patel and Elizabeth von der Goltz, and tech entrepreneur and fashion executive Felita Harris. Unlike other programs which are primarily aimed at emerging talent, RAISEfashion will advise brands and designers in need at any stage in their careers. To date, some 100 industry veterans have signed on to share their expertise.

“As a woman of color, I have personally experienced the incredible impact that established executives can have when they invest in young talent,” said Harris in the announcement. “That investment is professionally life changing. RAISE is offering the Black community access to information and providing networking opportunities that have the potential to change or propel the trajectory of their careers.”

The “ça va bien aller” movement was born out of the pandemic.

Canadian fine jeweller and retailer Birks has released a new rainbow necklace with a special message born out of Quebec during quarantine.

As people were encouraged to remain at home during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic earlier this year, Quebec residents began to place signs with the message “Ça va bien aller” (which translates to “it’s going to be okay”) and drawings of rainbows in their windows at home and in stores as a way of showing support and strength during the uncertain time. Inspired by this movement, Birks has created the Birks Rosée Du Matin Ça va bien aller Horizontal Bar Necklace.

                          birks rainbow necklace
                          Photograph courtesy of Birks

The 18K white gold necklace features a total of 17 stones (weighing in at 0.19 carats), including three yellow sapphires, three tsavorites, three light blue sapphires, two purple sapphires, two pink sapphires, two rubies and two orange sapphires. It is finished on an 18-inch chain, which can be adjusted to 15, 16 or 17 inches depending on your preference.

The necklace –  which is now available for purchase online or in select Maison Birks stores – retails for $650 and 30 per cent of the net proceeds from each necklace sold will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross as they help support the country’s most vulnerable at this time.

Speaking of the design, Birks’ president and CEO Jean-Christophe Bédos said in a release that the brand feels “a responsibility to lift the spirits of those around us during challenging times” and that the necklace “can act as a spirited reminder of a brighter tomorrow.”

Birks is the latest Canadian brand to be inspired by the movement, with Montreal-based outerwear brand Mackage also creating a rainbow version of its cult Krys hoodie earlier this year to help raise money for United Way Centraide.

If You’re Confused About the Conway Drama, That’s Because It’s Complicated As Heck

There’s never a dull moment in the White House. On August 23, counsellor Kellyanne Conway announced that she will be resigning from her position in the Trump administration at the end of the month. In a statement released on her social media accounts, Conway explained her decision, writing: “I will be transitioning from the White House at the end of this month. George is also making changes. We disagree about plenty but we are united on what matters most: the kids. Our four children are teens and ‘tweens starting a new academic year, in middle school and high school, remotely from home for at least a few months. As millions of parents nationwide know, kids ‘doing school from home’ requires a level of attention and vigilance that is as unusual as these times.”

Conway wrote that she was leaving her position “gratefully & humbly.”

“This is completely my choice and my voice. In time, I will announce future plans,” she continued. “For now, and for my beloved children, it will be less drama, more mama.” Conway was set to speak during the Republican National Convention; there has been no word if that has changed given her resignation. Her announcement came only minutes after the advisor’s husband—George Conway, a lawyer who is very publicly anti-Trump—announced that he’d be withdrawing from the Lincoln Project—a group formed by anti-Trump Republicans—to “devote more time to family matters.”

The announcement from Kellyanne Conway is big for many reasons, paramount among them the fact that the advisor has been one of the current president’s most vocal and staunch supporters and defenders, working with him since 2016 and becoming the first female campaign manager to win a presidential race, per CNN. But it’s also significant for another reason: It very well may have been influenced by her teenage daughter. On August 22, Conway’s 15-year-old daughter Claudia tweeted that she wants to formally emancipate from her parents, an announcement that comes after months of her publicly speaking out against her mom, President Trump and the Republican party on social media—specifically on TikTok and Twitter.

But there’s *a lot* more to the story. Here, everything we know about Claudia Conway’s emancipation announcement, Kellyanne Conway’s resignation and what TikTok has to do with all of this.

Kellyanne Conway’s departure comes on the heels of some serious allegations

A day after tweeting about her intention to seek emancipation (i.e. ending the legal authority a parent has over a child under the age of 18), and just before her mom announced her resignation from the White House, Claudia Conway responded to commenters on social media speculating her motivation was due to her mom’s job and their political differences, revealing that she is in fact seeking emancipation due to what she describes as “years of childhood trauma and abuse.”

In a TikTok livestream released shortly after her mom’s announcement, Conway elaborated on these allegations, stating: “My dad doesn’t care about me, he’s never cared about me. He probably doesn’t even know my middle name—which is really sad, but true.”

Later, she said that her dad had physically abused her when she was younger, “right here in this very room,” then went on to talk about her mom, saying: “Same thing with my mom. My mom got me arrested, she’s very, very physically abusive. Very, very verbally abusive. I’ve been belittled and badgered my entire life.”

Kellyanne and George Conway have yet to address these claims directly.

Read this next: Trump’s Been Impeached—So Now What?

But this is not the first time Conway has made claims of abuse against her parents. In an August 6 TikTok Live, the teen made similar allegations, prompting one Twitter user to write: “Claudia Conway just went live on tiktok and talked about how her mother has physically and emotionally abused her for years and had her arrested for fake assault charges a few weeks ago…….someone get this girl emancipated STAT.”

And later the same day, Conway seemed to be pursuing action, asking her Twitter followers, “how do i get in touch with pro bono lawyers.”

While these allegations of abuse are unsettling, anyone who’s been following Claudia Conway on social media shouldn’t be surprised—because she has been publicly speaking out against her parents for several months. In June of this year, the TikTok star popped up on social media with several videos that made clear her political stance: liberal AF. In a series of videos, the teen has showed her support for the Black Lives Matter movement and defunding the police, called for justice in the murder of Breonna Taylor and called out Trump supporters for spreading hate on her page and spewing hate at her.

She has also called out her mom and her politics *numerous* times; making it very clear that they don’t share the same values.

                          @datjerseygirl♬ Bulletproof – La Roux

Most recently, after the announcement that Kellyanne would be speaking at the RNC, Claudia shared her disappointment on TikTok. (FYI, she hated it.)

                          @datjerseygirl♬ original sound – jennsuniverse

While some of these videos can be interpreted as a typical teen rebelling against her parents, dismissing them as such is irresponsible in light of the more serious allegations that have now come to light—including a post from early August where Claudia describes how Kellyanne had her daughter arrested for fake assault charges.

Whether or not Conway was *actually* arrested, it’s pretty clear that there is some major strife happening within this family due at least in part to Claudia’s public political activism. For example, in mid-July, Conway’s followers noticed that several of her politically-themed videos had been deleted, and then Conway revealed in a July 12 video that her parents—her dad specifically—made her delete them.

In a series of now-deleted tweets, Conway claimed that her parents were trying to “silence” her.

Some people aren’t buying Claudia Conway’s allegations—but it’s important to believe her

While many online commenters have responded with sympathy to Conway’s apparent plight as a young woman growing up in what appears to be a mentally toxic environment—others speculated that Kellyanne and the entire Conway family could be in on the schtick. As several people on Twitter theorized, perhaps Conway’s political activism against her mom’s employer, her comments online and Kellyanne’s resignation to spend more time with her family, were part of one big plot so that the political advisor could bow out of Trump’s administration before shit really hit the fan with the upcoming election. But we don’t buy this one either: With with how steadfastly Kellyanne has supported Trump through sexual assault allegations, an impeachment and WWIII, it seems pretty unlikely she’d jump ship over a potential lost election. Let’s be honest, the shit hit the fan a long time ago.

Read this next: The Most Explosive Claims From Mary Trump’s New Book

Regardless of the internet’s theories about what’s really going on in the Conway household, it’s important not to dismiss or diminish Claudia’s claims. Regardless of whether there is validity to the abuse allegations, it’s extremely clear that whatever their relationship is, it’s fractured and seemingly toxic. Getting along with your parents can be difficult at the best of times, but for a 15-year-old growing up in a household at odds with a parent who has unwavering support for a man accused of rape, sexual assault and harrassment by more than 20 women, and doesn’t believe in a woman’s right to control her own body—that is beyond your typical challenging relationship. And then imagine having to publicly defend yourself against your parents’ controversial beliefs.

It’s too much for any 15-year-old to deal with. And then you add on allegations of abuse. Too often, young women (not to mention members of the LGBTQ+ community) aren’t believed when it comes to sharing their experiences with abuse. Which is why people who are skeptical about Conway’s statements—characterizing her emancipation declaration as the temperamental musings of a “rich white girl who’s rebelling against her parents”—may want to have a hard think.

Jumping to the conclusion that is simply rebelling based on the fact that she comes from a privileged family isn’t only unfair, but it also dismisses and invalidates both Conway’s reported experience as well as those of other victims of abuse. If a wealthy white teen isn’t believed, then what message does that send BIPOC and less advantaged survivors of abuse?

While there’s no doubt that being from a certain socioeconomic group as well as being white or non-marginalized affords people a lot of  privileges (see: legit everything), it doesn’t afford protection from abuse. If Paris Hilton’s recent revelations of physical and mental abuse at the hands of teachers have shown us anything, it’s that young people experience abuse in many different ways.

We should also acknowledge how monumental TikTok activism is in this

Legitimacy debates aside, if anything else Kellyanne Conway’s resignation is big news for the fact that it pretty much stemmed directly from social media-based activism. The fact remains that—through the power of TikTok—Conway spread her message, gained a following and elicited IRL change. The 15-year-old, albeit indirectly, brought forth a change that politically engaged liberals have been trying to do since Trump’s election in 2016—all via TikTok.

It’s a change that proves that not only should we *not* discount Gen Z and the power of their activism, but we also shouldn’t discount their means of spreading and eliciting change (ie: via social media). Because it actually gets the job done. (Also, isn’t it nice to think of TikTok as an agent of social activism rather than *just* a place for dancing videos and content houses to thrive?).

Online or IRL, something tells us this won’t be the last we hear about Claudia Conway.

Amanda Little-Richardson, MD, MPH, is an ob-gyn who recently graduated from Lenox Hill Hospital, now featured on the Netflix documentary, Lenox Hill. She earned her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and a master of public health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Little-Richardson currently works at Kaiser San Jose.

As a Black person, you learn from an early age where your place is in this world. Your family and community may do what they can to nurture and protect you from racism, but it contaminates all aspects of American life. In third grade, I asked my dad, “Are white people better than Black people?” We had just moved from Maryland to Texas. Nothing had ever been said in our home to suggest that I wasn’t equal to my peers. Yet that was the message I had received while just doing the things that children do: going to school, watching television.

This cloud of inferiority followed me until my parents’ military career led them to Germany, where ironically, I went to school with other Black children for the first time. I still smile thinking of the first time someone told me they had a crush on me. I had never known anyone who liked me before. Though it may seem insignificant, it’s a social form of validation. Those years in Germany were some of the best of my life because I was finally in a space where I felt I could be wholly myself without fear of being less than.

After graduating from high school in Korea, I returned to the States for college. While I considered other career paths, I ultimately decided to enroll in pre-med courses. My parents had always emphasized helping others, and for me, medicine was the most practical way to do that. As a doctor, you meet people at their most vulnerable and offer them relief. There’s so much opportunity for improving the lives of whole communities through medicine. In my mind, I would finish my training and then move abroad to work in underserved areas — but after being back in the US, and once again grappling with my identity as a Black woman, it became clear to me that I didn’t need to go overseas to find disparities in healthcare. I only had to walk across the tracks of any major city.

After being back in the US, and once again grappling with my identity as a Black woman, it became clear to me that I didn’t need to go overseas to find disparities in healthcare.

The fact that such healthcare disparities exist should not be surprising. From a young age, I understood how Black people are viewed by society and the obstacles we face, from discrimination in housing to higher rates of incarceration. It only made sense that systemic racism would find its way into the healthcare system. But the differences in healthcare outcomes aren’t just a matter of access, though many people assume that to be the case. While studying to become an ob-gyn, I learned that Black women are up to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than their white counterparts, regardless of socioeconomic factors. Their rates of maternal morbidity — or lasting consequences from a complication during pregnancy — are also higher. This points to healthcare bias and inappropriate treatment of women based on the color of their skin.

One of the most famous examples is Serena Williams. The legendary athlete had a history of blood clots, so when she began experiencing shortness of breath after giving birth to her daughter, she worried she had another pulmonary embolism. She asked for a CT scan, but the hospital staff resisted. Williams begged them to reconsider, and when they finally agreed to the scan, they discovered several clots in her lungs. Williams is one of the most influential Black women in the world, and still, she could have died.

But the evidence of racial bias isn’t purely anecdotal. A 2016 study found that roughly half of white medical students held false beliefs that could influence the way they treat a patient’s pain. They actually believed that Black people’s skin is thicker than white people’s skin, for example, or that their nerve endings are less sensitive. If a doctor feels that way, how can we trust that they would give a Black patient the appropriate dose of pain medicine? Or order them a CT scan? That’s how pervasive bias is in our society — and the consequences can be deadly.

A 2016 study found that roughly half of white medical students held false beliefs that could influence the way they treat a patient’s pain.

I don’t mean to suggest that doctors of other races are incapable of providing quality care to Black patients. But I also know that people see the world through their cultural lens, which is why it’s so essential that there be diversity in medicine: not just racial diversity, but also gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background. As a Black woman, the way I interpret a problem may be different from how you interpret it, and therefore our solutions may be different, too. It’s very similar to the Black Lives Matter movement. By saying we need Black doctors, we’re not saying we don’t need other doctors. We just need to be active in bringing Black people into medicine, just as we need to be active about protecting Black lives.

When I think about the many challenges we’re facing, in the medical community and as a nation, it can be disheartening. As a doctor, a wife, and a mother — and just as importantly, as a Black woman — I’ve found myself at a crossroads lately. I just finished my training. I now have degrees in anthropology, medicine, and public health. And as much as I’d like to just work as a doctor — go to my office every day to see patients, come home to spend time with my husband and daughter — I feel this sense of duty to do more, to work to effect change at a policy level.

For hundreds of years, Black people have compartmentalized our trauma just to survive, but this moment calls for us not to simply move on. We have to force these issues to light if we want to save lives.

How to Demand Justice for Jacob Blake

After months of non-stop Black Lives Matter protests and calls to defund the police, people are now demanding justice for Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black man whom police shot in the back on Sunday night. Blake is now reported to be recovering in the hospital. Below, what you need to know and how you can help.

                          What happened on August 23rd?

On Sunday evening, police were responding to a “domestic incident” in Kenosha, Wisconsin, when they shot a man identified as Jacob Blake in the back several times. As of Monday morning, it was reported that Blake was in serious condition at Froedtert Hospital near Milwaukee. Members of Blake’s family have said on social media that he is out of surgery and in stable condition, per BuzzFeed News.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation has said the officers involved have been put on administrative leave.

A video of the incident has been circulating across social media. The Milkwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that, in the video, a man in a white shirt walks over to a van while being followed by two police officers who have their weapons drawn. When the man opens the door of the van to get in, an officer grabs his shirt and then “appears to shoot him in the back at close range” and seven shots are heard. “The video does not show what happened before the man walked away from the officers, nor what was said, if anything.”

Kenosha News reports that, following the shooting, several people who were gathered nearby said Blake was “trying to break up a verbal altercation between two women shortly after 5 P.M.” The outlet reports, “At least a half dozen witnesses said that the man had tried to break up a fight between the two women outside a home at 2805 40th St. and that police had attempted to use a Taser on the man prior to the shooting.”

Late on Sunday evening, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers tweeted a statement, writing: “Tonight, Jacob Blake was shot in the back multiple times, in broad daylight, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Kathy and I join his family, friends, and neighbors in hoping earnestly that he will not succumb to his injuries. While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country.” He continued, “I have said all along that although we must offer our empathy, equally important is our action. In the coming days, we will demand just that of elected officials in our state who have failed to recognize the racism in our state and our country for far too long.”

                          What happens next?

The Wisconsin Attorney General released a statement on Monday that said the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting. The statement says, “DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by Wisconsin State Patrol and Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation. The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave.” The statement also explains that the DCI is aiming to provide a report of the incident to a prosecutor within 30 days.

The police union representing the officers involved in the incident asked the public to await a full investigation before reserving judgement. “As always, the video currently circulating does not capture all the intricacies of a highly dynamic incident. We ask that you withhold from passing judgement until all the facts are known and released,” said Pete Deates, president of the Kenosha Professional Police Association, via CNN.

According to the outlet, U.S. Attorney General Bill Bar will give a briefing on Blake’s shooting during a scheduled visit to the White House on Monday. White House chief of staff Mark Meadows reportedly said, “From what I was briefed on, obviously, the video tells a story that’s troubling.” He added that it’s still too early to tell what happened.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden posted the following statement to his website regarding the police shooting:

“Yesterday in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back as police attempted to restrain him from getting into his car. His children watched from inside the car and bystanders watched in disbelief. And this morning, the nation wakes up yet again with grief and outrage that yet another Black American is a victim of excessive force. This calls for an immediate, full and transparent investigation and the officers must be held accountable.

These shots pierce the soul of our nation. Jill and I pray for Jacob’s recovery and for his children.

Equal justice has not been real for Black Americans and so many others. We are at an inflection point. We must dismantle systemic racism. It is the urgent task before us. We must fight to honor the ideals laid in the original American promise, which we are yet to attain: That all men and women are created equal, but more importantly that they must be treated equally.”

                          How has the community responded?

Protests began in Kenosha on Sunday night with about 100 people gathered at the Kenosha County Public Safety Building by 10:15 P.M., according to USA Today. The outlet reports that police officers used tear gas on protestors that same evening.

The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department announced a state of emergency curfew starting at 10:15 P.M. on Sunday and ending at 7 A.M.

Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who’s also representing the family of George Floyd, tweeted that Blake’s three sons were in the car when the police shot him. Crump is now representing Blake’s family. He said in a statement: “We will seek justice for Jacob Blake and his family as we demand answers from the Kenosha Police Department. How many more of these tragic ‘while Black’ tragedies will it take until the racial profiling and undervaluing of Black lives by the police finally stops?”

                          How to help:

You can contact local and state officials to demand justice for Blake and for the police officers involved to be held accountable:

                          • Kenosha District Attorney⁣⁣: 262-653-2400⁣⁣, Michael.Graveley@da.wi.gov

After weeks of teasing a top-secret project, Jennifer Lopez’s big announcement is finally here! The multi-talented star is officially launching her own beauty brand, J.Lo Beauty.

In true bronze goddess form, Lopez shared a sneak peek of the line with a post captioned “Sunset glow.” In the photo, the singer wears a full face of makeup with blush, bronzer, eyeshadow, and lip gloss.

Not much else is known about J.Lo Beauty. At the beginning of the month, Lopez told fans she was shooting a video for her secret project. “I’ve been shooting a video for the past two days, and I should be sleeping right now,” she says. “But I don’t know, maybe I’m excited to get back to the set.”

According to Page Six, Lopez filed the J.Lo Beauty trademark last December for cosmetics and skincare, including “moisturizers, cleansers, soaps, gels, lotions, serums, masks, and both face and body creams.”

The announcement follows one of J.Lo’s biggest beauty moments earlier this year, at the 2020 Super Bowl LIV halftime show. Viewers (and A-Rod) were entranced by Lopez’s bouncy hair and glamorous facebeat. After her performance, makeup artist Scott Barnes gave ELLE.com the exclusive on the stunning makeup look.

“My vibe for this was Versace supermodel, the ’90s,” he said. “It was very Peter Lindbergh shoots with the skirt, the leather, and the hats. And I was like, ‘OMG; this reminds me of Linda [Evangelista], it could be Christy [Turlington], and all of the girls.’ I wanted to give the nod to that, and that’s where the makeup inspiration came from.”

Christine Quinn’s Fashion Philosophy? ‘One Part Bitchy, One Part Miranda Priestly’

In the season 2 finale of Netflix’s Selling Sunset, Oppenheim Group’s most
ostentatious agent Christine Quinn crashes her coworker-turned-frenemy Mary Fitzgerald’s final dress fitting at Floravere bridal showroom on Melrose Place. Quinn is there to apologize for calling Fitzgerald a “fucking idiot” just a few days before the wedding.

Just like a Sour Patch Kid, Quinn can be sour first—then sweet. In the show, she’s often doing damage control for her over-the-top antics—and when she apologizes, she does it in fabulous 4-inch stilettos.

To make amends with Fitzgerald, she selected a red mock neck sweater dress from Revolve, Balenciaga sunglasses, and shimmering Christian Louboutin heels.

“My style is like a recipe,” Quinn tells ELLE.com. “One part bitchy, one part Miranda Priestly, and a whole lot of designer.”

Quinn is the uncontested sartorial star of Selling Sunset, parading around multi-million dollar botox-themed real estate showings in Balenciaga jumpsuits and Moschino blazers. She’s a self-proclaimed “goth Barbie” whose flair for pomp and circumstance often gets her in trouble—but also makes for really, really great reality television. At her anti-wedding wedding to retired software engineer Christian Richard, she walked down the aisle in a black Galia Lahav ballgown as fake snow fell on her shoulders.

“[What I wear] is all about my mood,” she says. “Sometimes I am sassy in a dress. Sometimes I want to be a boss bitch in a power suit. And sometimes, I just want to listen to the tea, and be a bit more incognito wearing a sweatshirt—designer obviously.”

Quinn does her own styling, hair, and makeup for the show. It takes her about three hours to get ready.

“I like to add pieces that are unique,” she says. “I also like to raise a freshly botoxed eyebrow, [because] fashion is so subjective, and I love it.”

Quinn owns 300 pairs of shoes and estimates around 95 percent of them are high heels. She also started collecting designer slippers in quarantine and now has over 50 pairs. Among her favorite are some furry Louis Vuitton slippers, which she owns “in every color.”

She pairs them with her Louis Vuitton silk pajamas or with her Virgil Abloh tracksuit. “I love being comfy in menswear,” she says.

Her favorite designer, she says, is Louis Vuitton. “I probably own everything from their past several collections,” she says. “Louis Vuitton is an iconic staple. It is, and always will be a classic.”

Her love for Louis can be traced back to her time working at a Taco Bell in Texas. “It was the one brand I always admired growing up,” she says. “I worked in a mall and admired the [Louis Vuitton] store every time I walked past it.”

“I have pieces that I am collecting now for my niece, and future daughter,” she says. “My budget used to be minimum wage, now my budget is love.”

“I’ve been listening to so many great podcasts while at home in Nebraska–they are the perfect backdrop for my skating strolls with Isaac or when I need some solo time away from the family (everyone needs a break these days!),” said Graham in a statement. “I’m so excited to be teaming up with Spotify to host Listen Up With Ashley Graham, where I’ll be discussing my favourite podcasts with fellow podcast-lovers and diving into topics that are of interest to me.”

The topics on the agenda for the upcoming three sessions are motherhood (August 26), business entrepreneurship (September 2) and wellness (September 9). Here’s how it works: Ahead of the show each Wednesday (starting August 26 at 12pm EST), listeners can head to Graham’s Spotify profile to stream the shows on her curated playlist for the week. On the day of the discussion, Graham will host a 30-minute talk on Instagram Live where she will be answering questions and comments from viewers. The playlists and discussion guides can be found on Spotify’s For The Record blog.

For the motherhood-themed session this Wednesday, the episodes selected by Graham (a new mom herself) for this week’s playlist are ‘Mom’s Not There When I Need Her’ from the podcast Motherhood Sessions, Graham’s own interview with Shay Mitchell from her podcast Pretty Big Deal, and Episode 355 from One Bad Mother. Happy listening!

See Kamala Harris’s Sweet Anniversary Post for Her Husband, Douglas Emhoff

Sen. Kamala Harris just ended a big week. At the Democratic National Convention last week, she made history as the first the first Black woman and the first Asian American to be on a major-party ticket in the United States.

At the DNC, America also met Harris’s blended family, the step-kids who call her “Momala,” and her husband of six years, entertainment lawyer Douglas Emhoff. On her Instagram yesterday, Harris posted a photo of her and Emhoff, along with a message celebrating their six-year wedding anniversary.

@douglasemhoff, there’s no one I’d rather be with on this journey,” she wrote. Happy anniversary!”

Emhoff posted a photo from his and Harris’s wedding with the caption: “Dearest Kamala: here’s to us, our family, friends and our beautiful life together. Wouldn’t change a thing. Happy Anniversary! Love, D.”

In a 2019 essay for ELLE, Harris wrote about what it was like to join her husband’s family and to become a stepmom to two children of divorce.

“When I met Doug, the man who would become my husband, I also met a man who was a divorced father of two children, Cole and Ella, named after John Coltrane and Ella Fitzgerald,” she wrote. “As a child of divorce, I knew how hard it could be when your parents start to date other people. And I was determined not to insert myself in their lives until Doug and I had established we were in this for the long haul. Children need consistency; I didn’t want to insert myself into their lives as a temporary fixture because I didn’t want to disappoint them. There’s nothing worse than disappointing a child…A few years later when Doug and I got married, Cole, Ella, and I agreed that we didn’t like the term ‘stepmom.’ Instead they came up with the name ‘Momala.’ Our time as a family is Sunday dinner. We come together, all of us around the table, and over time we’ve fallen into our roles. Cole sets the table and picks the music, Ella makes beautiful desserts, Doug acts as my sous-chef, and I cook.”

Last Wednesday, during the speech she gave to accept her nomination as the vice presidential candidate for the Democratic party, Harris gave tribute to the women who have come before her.

“These women inspired us to pick up the torch, and fight on. Women like Mary Church Terrell, Mary McLeod Bethune, Fannie Lou Hamer, and Diane Nash, Constance Baker Motley, and the great Shirley Chisholm,” she said. We’re not often taught their stories. But as Americans, we all stand on their shoulders.”

She also touched on this moment of reckoning that America is feeling surrounding racial justice.

“There is no vaccine for racism,” she said. “We’ve got to do the work, for George Floyd, for Breonna Taylor, for the lives of too many others to name … None of us are free until all of us are free.”

Calling All Dancing Queens! This 25-Minute Mamma Mia! HIIT Workout Is an Absolute Party

I already dance around to the Mamma Mia! soundtrack on a weekly basis, so I might as well get an official workout of it. Thankfully, fitness YouTuber Emily Thorne (AKA emkfit) has created a dance party routine that fulfills my HIIT dreams and more. She released a video earlier this month that’s set to the greatest hits from the ABBA-inspired movie — including “Dancing Queen,” of course.

The 25-minute high-intensity workout starts out with a warmup to “Lay All Your Love on Me” and transitions into tracks like “Gimme Gimme” and “Take a Chance on Me.” She incorporates plenty of lower-body movements, like squats and lunges, and pairs them with arm exercises that are equal parts fun and exhausting. Seems like exactly what we’d need before partying the night away at The Villa Donna. Check out the energizing workout above, and let it motivate you into moving and grooving until the third movie hits theaters.

Twitter Is Not Impressed With Melania Trump’s New Rose Garden Design

On Saturday, Melania Trump debuted the new design for the White House Rose Garden by tweeting photos along with this message: “Excited to honor history & celebrate the future in our beautiful @WhiteHouse Rose Garden this evening. Thank you to all who helped renew this iconic & truly gorgeous space.”

As soon as people on Twitter saw the images, they let loose with their opinions. Some people just criticized the aesthetic of the new design by calling it “cold and empty,” while others pointed out that the First Lady was prioritizing the garden during a global pandemic that’s killing thousands of Americans and surpassed a global death toll of 800,000 this weekend.

The First Lady is set to deliver her Republican National Convention (RNC) speech from the White House Rose Garden. Some people on Twitter imagined that scene as a bleak one:

Others were concerned about the trees in the garden.

In case you need some context as to why so many people are referencing the Kennedy family in these tweets, here’s a little history from the White House Historical Association and Rachel Lambert Mellon. The American designer, who died in 2014, wrote that she was commissioned by President Kennedy to redesign the Rose Garden so that it might be as impressive as the gardens he saw at official residences in Europe.

“The garden was begun in the spring of 1962 and finished at the end of the same year. It was truly President Kennedy’s garden,” Lambert Mellen wrote in her long retelling of the garden’s story. “His concern for the growth and wellbeing of this garden was never ending. Often in the late afternoon working there by myself, changing and pruning plants, I would notice that his door would be open. He would be working at his desk. I was aware of and touched by the serious tranquility of this scene. As he left the office, he always stopped to say, ‘Hi,’ or ‘How is the garden doing?’

According to many people on Twitter, this seems to be the update for President Kennedy, if he were here to ask that question in 2020:
