They’ve also been friends for years. in 2015, he said this to GQ Australia: “Miley is one of my best friends, and she helps with some of that transitional stuff—trying to escape your childhood. She’s super open-minded, and I’m working on becoming more like that.”

If You Want to Feel Energetic, Prevent Disease, and Lose Weight, Try the “Eat to Live” Lifestyle

While looking for vegan recipe inspiration on Instagram, I stumbled on the hashtag #nutritarian, an eating lifestyle developed Joel Furman, MD, who wrote the book Eat to Live. After scrolling through gorgeously colored plant-based recipes and reading a little bit about the science behind a nutritarian diet, I immediately ordered the book so I could learn more.

The book begins with an explanation of why the standard American diet, full of processed, high-calorie, nutrient-deficient food, may lead to health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and cancer, as well as early death. He touches on the health risks of eating too much meat and dairy, the dangers of yo-yo dieting, and Dr. Furman’s simple solution — to eat high-nutrient, low-calorie foods.

A nutritarian diet focuses on nutrient-dense foods that prevent disease instead of causing it. It’s comprised of a plant-based diet that includes tons of greens, other veggies, fruit, legumes, and a limited amount of whole grains, nuts, and seeds. You also avoid processed foods like refined flours and packaged foods, sugar, oil, and salt. This way of eating is meant to help prevent disease, give you energy, help you naturally lose weight (and easily sustain it), and help lengthen your life.

If you’re new to the nutritarian lifestyle and ready to improve your health through diet, in the book Dr. Furman recommends starting out with the Six-Week Plan outlined below. He says that if you stick to this plan strictly for six weeks, your body will undergo a remarkable transformation as you notice changes in your physical and emotional well-being — you’ll feel better than you have in years. Your digestion will improve, you’ll lose cravings for unhealthy foods, and he says in the book, “you will be thrilled with how easily your weight drops.”

Six-Week Plan Explanation

There are many foods restricted on the Six-Week Plan, including meat and dairy, for the health risks mentioned above. There is also no snacking in between meals because you’re supposed to eat a huge veggie-packed meal so you’re so satisfied until your next meal. This also gives your digestive system a break, since many of us are used to snacking all day.

Oils aren’t permitted, even coconut or olive oil, as Dr. Furman’s says they add extra calories without the fiber to fill you up. He recommends getting your healthy fats through avocados, nuts, and seeds instead, since these offer protein and fiber as well. You are also to avoid added salt, since excess salt is linked to stomach cancer, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis. Foods naturally contain the sodium your body needs, and your taste buds will soon get used to not having extra salt.

The Eat to Live Six-Week Plan

Unlimited:

Eat as much as you want:

  • All raw vegetables (goal: 1 pound)
  • Cooked green and nongreen nutrient-rich vegetables: eggplant, mushrooms, peppers, onions, tomatoes, carrots, zucchini, cucumbers, celery, cauliflower (goal: 1 pound daily)
  • Beans, legumes, bean sprouts, and tofu (goal: 1 cup)
  • Fresh fruit (at least 4 daily)

Limited:

  • Cooked starchy vegetables or whole grains: butternut and acorn squash, corn, white and sweet potatoes, turnips, parsnips, rice, bread, cereal, oatmeal (no more than one serving or 1 cup)
  • Raw nuts and seeds (1 ounce max per day)
  • Avocado (2 ounces max per day)
  • Dried fruit (2 tablespoons max per day)
  • Ground flaxseeds (1 tablespoon max per day)

Off-Limits:

  • Dairy
  • Animal products
  • Between-meal snacks
  • Fruit juice
  • Oils
  • Added salt

As stated in the book, here are Dr. Furman’s 10 easy tips for living with the Six-Week Plan:

  1. Remember, the salad is the main dish: eat it first at lunch and dinner. You can eat more than a pound if you want, but don’t worry if you’re too full and can’t eat the whole pound.
  2. Eat as much fruit as you want but at least four fresh fruits daily. Enjoy fresh fruit as dessert, or blend frozen fruit and make nice cream.
  3. Variety is the spice of life, particularly when it comes to greens. Explore all the different greens, raw veggies, cooked veggies, and use frozen veggies when you’re in a rush.
  4. Beware of the starchy vegetable. Limit high-starch grains and vegetables to one cup a day, and fill up on the raw and non-starchy veggies first. Refined grains such as bread and pasta should be even more restricted than the vegetable-based starches.
  5. Eat beans or legumes every day. You can have more than one cup if you choose, adding beans to smoothies, salads, and soups.
  6. Eliminate animal and dairy products. If this is too hard, eat lean fish once or twice a week and eggs once a week. No dairy products are permitted on the Six-Week Plan.
  7. Have a tablespoon of ground flaxseeds every day. This will offer you omega-3 fats that may protect against heart disease, reduce inflammation, and prevent age-related mental decline such as dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. Add to smoothies, salad, oatmeal, or nice cream.
  8. Consume nuts and seeds in limited amounts, not more than one ounce per day. Pecans, walnuts, sunflower seeds, and other nuts and seeds offer disease protection, but they are high in calories and fat.
  9. Eat lots of mushrooms all the time. They make a great chewy replacement for meat and contain a variety of powerful phytochemicals that may decrease risk of chronic disease, especially cancer.
  10. Keep it simple. If you’re not sure what to eat, enjoy fruit for breakfast, a lunchtime salad with beans on top and more fruit, and for dinner, have a salad with two cooked veggies. Finish off with fruit or frozen fruit for dessert.

After completing the Six-Week Plan, you move on to the Life Plan, which offers more choices. Basically, you follow a nutritarian diet 90 percent of the time, which leaves 10 percent left or about 150 calories of low-nutrient foods such as chocolate, cheese, or a bagel. If you want to reintroduce meat and dairy back into your diet, he recommends 12 or fewer ounces per week. This means that on the Life Plan, you’re allowed to eat almost any kind of food, even a small cookie or candy bar, as long as the rest of the food you eat that day is plant-based and nutrient-dense.

How Meghan Markle Tried to Ease Tensions With Kate Middleton

the championships wimbledon 2019

Simon M BrutyGetty Images

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle walked away from royal life earlier this year; their final royal engagement was at the annual Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey. According to the new book Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, it was clear that Kate Middleton and Prince William still had some tension with Harry and Meghan.

“A lot of damage has been done,” co-author Omid Scobie told People. Scobie and his co-author Carolyn Durand write that Kate and William have never been close with Meghan. The authors report that Meghan and Harry felt that Kate and William snubbed them at the Commonwealth service.

They also write that things have never been very warm among the “fab four.” But after meeting the Cambridges, Meghan did two things to ease the tension: She gave Kate a soft leather Smythson notebook for her birthday. She also apparently had a close relationship with Charlotte.

Although tabloids pitted Meghan and Kate against each other with stories of their rift, Scobie and Durand said they were “not at war with each other.” Instead, they write, “there were some awkward moments.”

The weirdness apparently started with a conversation William had with Harry early on in his courtship with Meghan. A source told Durand and Scobie that William cautioned Harry to take his relationship with Meghan at a slow pace. “Don’t feel like you need to rush this. Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.” Harry reportedly took offense to William calling Meghan “this girl.”

“Harry was pissed off,” another source told the authors. “Pissed off that his brother would ask such a thing. Some felt it was an overreaction. But then, this totally sums them up as people—William the calm and rational one, and Harry, who can’t help but take things far too personally.”

Adele Posts a Rare Photo of Herself to Show Support for Beyoncé’s Black Is King

the 55th annual grammy awards backstage and audience

Christopher PolkGetty Images

It’s no secret that Adele is a huge Beyoncé fan. When she won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2017 for 25 over Lemonade, she used much of her speech to praise Bey.

“You are our light,” she said then. “And the way that you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel is empowering, and you make them stand up for themselves. And I love you. I always have. And I always will. I appreciate it.”

On Saturday, Adele posted an Instagram photo in tribute to Beyoncé and her new visual album, Black Is King. In the photo, Adele wears a shirt that matches Beyoncé’s outfit pictured onscreen, as she gestures toward her. “Thank you Queen for always making us all feel so loved through your art ♥️♥️,” she wrote.

In the photo, Adele also shows off some new curly long hair that fans haven’t seen until now. In June, she posted a photo of herself staring into a fan with the caption “five ciders in.” In that photo, her hair was long, but there were no curls to be seen.

The singer has been spending much of 2020 in quarantine during the global pandemic. When a fan asked if Adele if new album was coming out, she responded with her blunt thoughts on the matter: “Of course it’s not. Corona ain’t over. I’m quarantining. Wear a mask and be patient.”

For now, she’s at home watching Beyoncé’s magic on Disney+—just like the rest of us.

Gigi Hadid Shared the First Photo of Her and Zayn Malik Since Pregnancy Announcement

In late April, Gigi Hadid confirmed that she and Zayn Malik are expecting their first child. Since then, the couple haven’t posted any photos together on their Instagram grids. On Friday, Hadid changed that streak with this photo of her and Malik sharing a kiss—accompanied by the caption, “Baby daddy.”

Although Hadid and Malik haven’t posted any photos or personally shared many details about their relationship as they prepare to become parents, Hadid has spoken briefly about her pregnancy.

After British Vogue sent a now-deleted tweet with a link to a story that read “Gigi Hadid Reveals How She Disguises Her Pregnancy,” Hadid responded in her own tweet. In her tweet, she referenced an Instagram Live comment in which she said that a baggy jumpsuit creates an “optical illusion” and makes it look as if she does not have a baby bump.

“Disguise ….?,” she wrote. “I said in a baggy jumpsuit the front and side views are visually different stories- not that that was intentional or I was trying to hide anything. Will be proud and happy to share ‘insight’ when I feel like it, thanks.”

Hadid confirmed her pregnancy in a video interview with Jimmy Fallon, following reports that she and Malik are expecting.

“Thank you so much!” she told the late-night host after he wished her congratulations. “Obviously, you know, we wish we could’ve announced it on our own terms, but we’re very excited and happy and grateful for everyone’s well wishes and support so…I’m trying [to be present for every part of it],” she continued. “Especially during this time, it’s a nice silver lining to be able to be home and together and really experience it.”

13 Reasons Why: What We Can Learn From the Way the Series Portrays Trauma

With the release of the fourth and final season of 13 Reasons Why, I’ve had some time to reflect on the series; its exploration of trauma resulting from sexual assault, domestic abuse, and bullying; and what the show gets right and wrong about the experience of surviving it. I’m a survivor of domestic abuse, and despite the maxim that time heals all wounds, I still carry some of the emotional and psychological scars of a relationship that ended more than five years ago. These scars are lessons learned and wisdom hard-earned.

I see some of these lessons and a negligible bit of wisdom in 13 Reasons Why, particularly in Jessica Davis’s and Tyler Down’s stories of survival in the third season. Clay Jensen’s struggles in season four, while highly dramatized, also provide some real-world insights. The series doesn’t get everything right, though. It is, after all, a show produced with the goal of attracting viewers, so much of what I watched in the final seasons is sensationalized.

Some have gone so far as to say that 13 Reasons Why indulges in “trauma porn,” with one unlikely trauma after the next affecting the teens at Liberty High, often in quick succession. I don’t entirely disagree with this sentiment, but if you can look past the drama, the show still offers some teachable moments about how trauma affects survivors and the long, complicated road to recovery.

Daveed Diggs and Emmy Raver-Lampman’s Complete Relationship Timeline

When Hamilton debuted on Broadway in August 2015, it became a pop cultural phenomenon, winning Tonys, Grammys, and a Pulitzer Prize. What fans may not realize is that the hit hip-hop musical also led to two real-life romances among its original cast. One of those couples is Daveed Diggs, who originated the roles of Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette, and Emmy Raver-Lampman, who was an ensemble member of the cast and understudied all three lead female roles. Now, she’s returning to the small screen in season 2 of Umbrella Academy, which hits Netflix today.

Ahead, everything we know about their love story.

2015

Both Diggs and Raver-Lampman were a part of Hamilton‘s first Broadway cast. Diggs won a Tony Award for his dual roles of Jefferson and Lafayette during his run. Raver-Lampman, a member of the ensemble, left the show in April 2016 to join the Chicago cast of SpongeBob SquarePants the musical. Her departure occurred two months before the Disney+ version of Hamilton was filmed, meaning you won’t find her in the final movie.

In an October 2017 interview with Theater Mania, Raver-Lampman spoke about her time with the hit musical. “It was very much in the vein of any new show that you’re opening or getting ready to open; it’s just absolute chaos, not from the standpoint of the audience, but it’s still so new to everyone, and everyone is trying to get their bearings on what they’re actually supposed to be doing onstage,” she recalled.

Diggs left Hamilton in July 2016. He went on to release new music with his rap group Clipping and co-star in the ABC sitcom black-ish.

January 2017

The pair remained close after their working relationship ended. Diggs posted a photo of his feet alongside Raver-Lampman, whom he tagged in the Instagram photo. The actor was in Chicago to watch the city’s production of Hamilton, where Raver-Lampman played a role in the ensemble cast.

November 2017

During an interview for Women’s Health, Diggs spoke about what he looks for in a romantic partner. “I like individuality. I’m attracted to women who have been against so much that is thrown at them in this world and arrived at a place where they’re comfortable with themselves and confident,” he said, adding, “I pair well with people who like to hold court and be front and center.” That same month, Raver-Lampman supported the upcoming release of Diggs’ new movie Blindspotting, writing on Instagram, “#myfriendsaresotalented.”

May 2018

For the next year, the co-stars-turned-couple stayed quiet about their relationship.

June 2020

Diggs alluded to living with Raver-Lampman during a Los Angeles Times interview in June 2020. When speaking about the differences between himself and his Snowpiercer character Andre Layton he said, “Layton is hyper-observant. I am not. I have not ever figured out where all the things in our kitchen are because my girlfriend put them where they are, and I still don’t know. I would not make a good detective.” He added, “We’ve been in this house two years,” hinting at a possible summer 2018 start of their relationship.

July 2020

For as long as these two have known each other, their relationship was not openly reported on until July 2020. JustJared shared news of their relationship following the couple’s attendance at the Los Angeles premiere of Raver-Lampman’s movie aTypical Wednesday. Both of the actors wore matching masks to the event.

The One Drugstore Beauty Product Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Can’t Live Without

It comes in at under $10, too.

If there’s one thing that makes me particularly happy, it’s getting a peek into celebrity beauty bags. What do they love when they have access to everything? What products do they re-purchase themselves, despite all the products they would be sent for free? And given that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is at the top of my Freaky Friday list for switches, I’m always super interested to know what the supermodel has in her skincare lineup. And it turns out, one of her go-to products is available for under $10 at your local drugstore.

Speaking with Harper’s Bazaar UK, the founder of Rose Inc. shared her skincare must-haves and revealed that Bioderma’s Sensibio H20 makeup remover is in constant use. “I always buy that, again and again,” she shared. The fragrance-, paraben- and alcohol-free micellar water is specifically designed for sensitive skin. According to the brand’s website, the entire Sensibio line “allows you to reinforce your skin’s biological barrier while mimicking its very functions.” And Rosie isn’t the only fan – one bottle is sold every two seconds worldwide.

rosie huntington-whiteley skincare

As for her other hero products, Huntington-Whiteley names iS Clinical’s Cleansing Complex, Poly-Vitamin Serum, Super Serum and Hydra-Cool Serum as her morning must-haves, and the brand’s Active Serum and eye cream as key parts of her nighttime routine. She also uses the Environ dermaroller and the Nu Face tool in the evenings, as well as salicylic pads from Zo Skin Health, the Biba Creme Barrier Moisturizer and a retinol every now and then (Retin-8 is her favourite).

Skincare is key for the supermodel as she says she’s “struggled on and off throughout my entire life with acne and breakouts and congestion on my skin.” She sees LA-based facialist Biba De Souza regularly for facials and says De Souza’s counsel on non-comedogenic ingredients was a game-changer. “I immediately saw such a difference,” she says of removing pore-clogging ingredients from her routine.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to Shoppers to get my hands on a bottle (or 10) of the above.

Doctors and Nurses Are Posting #MedBikini Photos to Protest a Sexist, Body-Shaming Study

#MedBikini is an empowering new movement that’s inviting women across the medical field to post photos of themselves in swimsuits. Why? Paired with informative captions, these posts are reminding us that yes, your doctor has a life outside of the office, and that’s perfectly OK.

Seems self-evident, but apparently it wasn’t for the authors of an article that recently hit social media. Originally published in December 2019 in the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the article was titled “Prevalence of unprofessional social media content among young vascular surgeons.” The goal: to “evaluate the extent of unprofessional social media content among recent vascular surgery fellows and residents.” The study was conducted using so-called neutral (aka fake) accounts to dig into the Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter profiles of the fellows and residents, looking for anything they deemed “inappropriate.” This included any kind of “controversial” political and religious comments, and photos with alcohol or “provocative posing in bikinis/swimwear.”

Women in the medical community swiftly took to social media to protest the sexism they detected in the study and its narrow definition of professionalism. In speaking to 13 of the many women who took part in the movement, we heard that the immediate response to the study was often shock, followed by outrage and disappointment, and then a determination to join together and speak out. “Me posing in a bikini on Sunday does not dictate the quality of care you will receive from me on Monday,” said Nicole Sparks, MD, an ob-gyn in Atlanta. Added Risa Hoshino, MD, a pediatrician in New York, “[Women] have been body-shamed by men (and other women) all our lives and now a well-respected journal has validated our shame.”

“I shared my photo in solidarity with all of the women in medicine who have been told to not be too nice but also not aggressive; not be too well-dressed but not look like a slob; not act like a know-it-all but not admit uncertainty; not act too perfect but never admit that you need help,” said Yang Yang, MD, a vascular surgery resident.

And their voices made a difference: the article has since been retracted with an apology from the journal. (One of the authors also reportedly posted an apology to Twitter, though his account has since been deleted.)

Ahead, see the protest posts from 13 of the fierce female doctors and nurses who made this happen, and hear in their words why they decided to take part in the movement and where they hope it goes from here.

Boosting Immunity Is A Dangerous Myth

Mythological tales, from Achilles to Dracula, are rooted in immunity. And since medicine’s earliest days, physicians have relied on metaphors—using images like armies, orchestras, communities, weather, and gardens—to try to explain what is, in fact, an extremely complicated system that controls the health and well-being of virtually every aspect of the human body. New York Times journalist Matt Richtel, author of An Elegant Defense: The Extraordinary New Science of the Immune System, describes it as the “Festival of Life.” Our immunological system exists both inside and around our bodies, he says, with organisms and agents swarming everywhere, from our gut to our car’s steering wheel—some beneficial, some more dangerous. Microorganisms like fungi and bacteria, and infectious invaders such as viruses, are the party crashers. Our immune system operates like a workforce of janitors and laborers, kicking out the rowdy, unwelcome guests and cleaning up after their messes.

“Festival of Life” could just as easily describe our lives before this pandemic—before the novel coronavirus, with its lethal spiked crown, crashed our festive existence as we knew it. Some experts predict the virus will return in waves this fall and beyond, so it’s best to shore up the bouncers while we can. And by that, I don’t mean “strengthen” or “boost” your immune system. Instead, it needs to be balanced and optimized, so it functions as it’s designed to.

There’s no such thing as boosting immunity

“Boosting your immune system is a dangerous, ill-conceived concept and probably not even possible,” says Richtel, citing the COVID-19 pandemic as a prime example. When most people are seriously ill from the disease, the air sacs in the lungs become inflamed and fill with fluid, making it difficult for oxygen to pass through. It’s the body’s overzealous immune response, which sends in artillery—proteins called cytokines, immune cells such as T-cells and B-cells (aka lymphocytes), macrophages, and others—to attack the virus. The result is called a “cytokine storm,” a cascade of inflammatory responses that wreak havoc on our body’s equilibrium. An overactive, confused immune system also manifests itself in autoimmune disorders such as celiac disease, asthma, allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and multiple sclerosis. Stronger is not always better.

Some immune system factors are beyond our control, like aging (since immunity decreases as we get older), genetics, and gender. Though women are more susceptible to autoimmune diseases and are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s (which some researchers believe may also be caused by an overactive immune system), women also tend to fend off viruses and bacteria more effectively, which is supported by their lower death rate from COVID-19.

But there are factors we can influence, mainly nutrition, exercise, stress management, and sleep. If you ever wonder whether your daily routine can really make a difference, consider the coldsore or the canker sore, which can seem to pop up out of nowhere when you’re stressed, not sleeping well, or eating poorly. Your immune system lets down its guard (a gated-castle metaphor?), and voilà, the infection travels from where it’s been hiding in nerve cells to the mouth.

Immunity is directly linked to what you eat

Why is diet so important? “Seventy to 80 percent of the immune system lives in the gut,” says Will Bulsiewicz, MD, a gastroenterologist in Charleston, South Carolina, and the author of Fiber Fueled: The Plant-Based Gut Health Program for LosingWeight, Restoring Health, and Optimizing Your Microbiome. “There is literally just a single layer of cells that separates the gut microbiome from our immune system. They are in constant communication.” He believes that optimizing your gut microbiome is the best way to support immunity. Bulsiewicz says that fiber, derived from plants like fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, and legumes, is the heart and soul of gut healing. He’s also obsessed with broccoli sprouts, saying they have 100 times the active phytochemicals of broccoli. He cites a study published in the journal Immunity in which mice with influenza were given a high-fiber diet and improved their lung function, but those on a low-fiber diet had more damage to their lung tissue and died faster. “A high-fiber diet can change what happens in your lungs in response to a virus,” he says.

Healing the gut reduces inflammation, which is an immune response, says Mark Hyman, MD, author of 16 books about diet and health, including his latest, Food Fix. “Inflammatory diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, start in the gut. Thecytokine storm has a lot to do with the gut: If we understand how to keep our gut healthy, we will be more resilient against viral threats.” He suggests prebiotic foods, such as dandelion greens, garlic, onions, leeks, asparagus, apples, barley, oats, burdock root, flaxseed, seaweed, and jicama; and probiotic or fermented foods, like sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, tempeh, kefir, and yogurt, all of which can help restore the healthy bacteria of the microbiome.

Though the jury is still out on the efficacy of supplements, many experts believe antioxidants (such as vitamins A and C and beta-carotene) and vitamin D support immunity. L.A.-based nutritionist Serena Poon, who advises clients like Kerry Washington, recommends zinc picolinate, oil of oregano, nettle leaf, quercetin, and astragalus, as well as a blend of therapeutic organic oils in a diffuser, such as wild sage, wild oregano, wild thyme, wild bay leaf, cinnamon, and cumin. And mushrooms such as reishi and cordyceps (I give Four Sigmatic Mushroom Coffee as gifts to friends) have been shown to enhance immunity in some limited studies. (Be sure to check with your doctor before taking any dietary supplements.)

What not to eat is just as vital. Sugar suppresses immunity, and those at risk of high blood sugar levels—such as diabetics—have more difficulty controlling infections, which thrive on sugar. Hyman says processed food, junk food, sugars, starch, bad fats, salt, thickeners like xanthan gum, salt, and chemical additives will have an adverse effect on the microbiome, creating inflammation. He goes on to say you’re 10 times more likely to die from COVID-19 if you have heart disease, seven times more likely if you have diabetes (“One out of two Americans has diabetes or is pre-diabetic,” he notes), and three times more likely if you are obese.

The right type of exercise can strengthen your immune system

Even if losing weight isn’t a concern, physical exertion is critical. “Exercise has massive antiaging benefits and immune-strengthening abilities. Very active exercise makes sirtuins go up,” says Robert Huizenga, MD, a physician in Beverly Hills you may remember from NBC’s The Biggest Loser. “Sirtuins are this great control system inside the body that lowers the inflammation level. If there was ever a time to stay fit, eat healthy, and knock off central stomach fat, this is it.” He suggests intermittent fasting combined with jogging, speed-walking up inclines, swimming, and jumping rope, as well as strength and interval training. Aerobic exercise also helps reduce plaque formation in the arteries by keeping HDL levels higher.

Stress can put your immune system’s guard down

You may know that stress puts us into fight-or-flight mode, which stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and stress hormones like adrenaline, norepinephrine, and cortisol. When that happens, we are focused on fighting the lion in front of us, not the virus, Richtel says. Meditation, breathing exercises, yoga, gratitude, and mindfulness are proven ways to calm the nervous system and keep stress at bay, so our bodies don’t suffer as a result.

Studies suggest that negative mental states such as anxiety and loneliness affect immune responses, too. Married couples with a troubled relationship may have increased stress and depression, a pathway to immune dysregulation, inflammation, and poor health. And in that situation, divorce can actually be beneficial to immunity. (Married couples can also start to share some gene-related traits, such as their microbiome.) Steve Cole, PhD, a professor of medicine, psychiatry, and biobehavioral sciences at UCLA School of Medicine, studied the link between loneliness and gene expression and found that loneliness can affect a gene’s inflammatory response and our ability to fight disease. (A stressful lifestyle can also cause the body to release excess norepinephrine, which destroys the pigment-producing cells of your hair follicles, causing prematurely gray hair.)

Stress often interferes with a good night’s sleep, which can have disastrous effects on our health. “If people don’t sleep at night, their internal clock becomes disturbed, which has all kinds of consequences for inflammation and our immune system,” Huizenga says. Melatonin is the key hormone here, which is “definitely connected to immune regulation,” Hyman notes, “and even the restriction of cancer.” He says that may be one reason why children, who naturally have higher levels of melatonin, may not be at risk of serious infection or death from COVID-19.

Practice good hygiene (but don’t go overboard)

Another way to keep the party crashers out is to stay scrupulously clean. Though many of the bacteria swirling in and around us are helpful to the functioning of the body, it’s not a bad idea to try to minimize harmful foreign germs (hence the constant hand-scrubbing to wash away the novel coronavirus). Be diligent about regularly washing your clothes, your home (dust mites can cause allergies!), and the food you buy, like salad greens, which may contain salmonella or E. coli. Of course, too much wiping out of good bacteria isn’t advised either, as in the case of antibiotics that kill off friendly flora in the gut.

Amanda Chantal Bacon, founder and CEO of the wellness company Moon Juice, is living, breathing proof that all these habits can add up to an optimized immune system. “I put an autoimmune condition [Hashimoto’s] into remission when I was told by my doctors that wasn’t possible.” How? “By consciously changing my life drastically,” she says, basically doing all of the above.

As for the future, Bulsiewicz says, there are other promising ideas, like personalized probiotics and custom dietary plans based on your individual microbiome. But many believe we have the tools right now. Huizenga stresses that if there’s a known and safe vaccine available for a virus, as there is for HPV, get it. Many people don’t. “We already know what is required to help fix the immune system: optimizing our health in every aspect,” Hyman says. We just need to do it.

TIFF Just Revealed Its Slate of Films for the 2020 Festival

Idris Elba, Kate Winslet, Saoirse Ronan and Halle Berry are some of the stars with films at this year’s (largely virtual) festival.

In light of Covid restrictions, the Toronto International Film Festival is going largely virtual this September with a limited schedule of socially-distanced screenings and a reduced slate of 50 films, down from the usual 200+, available to view online. Today, a first look at the lineup of films was revealed, with additional special presentations and events to be announced in August. In keeping with the festival’s push in recent years for more representation of female filmmakers, 46% of the films announced for TIFF 2020 are directed or co-directed by women.

“The strong representation of women, Black people, Indigenous people, and people of colour among TIFF’s selection reflects the organization’s continuing commitment to normalizing gender parity and racial equality for future generations,” the festival said in its press release.

Spike Lee’s David Byrne’s American Utopia will open the festival, with several other buzzy titles featuring on this year’s slate including Francis Lee’s Ammonite starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan; The Father, directed by French filmmaker Florian Zeller and starring Oscar winners Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman; Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland starring Frances McDormand and David Strathairn, which is set to premiere “simultaneously” at TIFF and the Venice Film Festival; and Ricky Staub’s Concrete Cowboy starring Idris Elba.

2020 also marks the year that several acclaimed actors are making their feature directorial debuts: Viggo Mortensen with Falling, a family drama exploring themes of loss and love; Halle Berry with Bruised, in which she also stars as a disgraced MMA fighter returning to the ring; and Regina King with One Night in Miami, based on a 2013 play that follows a young Cassius Clay (later known as Muhammad Ali) after he wins the title of World Heavyweight Boxing Champion in 1964.

Canadian films lined up at TIFF 2020 include Tracey Deer’s Beans, a film about the 1990 Oka crisis told through the perspective of a 12-year-old Mohawk girl; Night Of The Kings, a drama from Quebec director Philippe Lacôte set in an Ivory Coast prison; and Inconvenient Indian, a documentary by Metis/Algonquin director Michelle Latimer exploring the cultural colonization of Indigenous peoples in North America.

In a first for the festival, a television miniseries will be closing out the lineup—Mira Nair’s BBC adaptation of Vikram Seth’s sprawling novel A Suitable Boy. Currently airing in the United Kingdom, the six-part show follows several different characters as they forge their own paths in a newly independent India.

The 45th Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 10 to 19, 2020. For more information, visit TIFF’s website.
