Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Have Formally Shut Down Their Charity

commonwealth day service 2020

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry spent the first half of 2020 taking measures to start their new life as they step away from their royal titles. Per People, the couple has formally closed down their charity SussexRoyal. Their new foundation is called Archewell. People reported on June 20 that since Harry, Meghan, and their 1-year-old son, Archie, arrived in Los Angeles earlier this year, they’ve been working on their new charity.

“They have had the opportunity to speak with some incredible thought leaders, and those conversations have been deeply educational and helpful in identifying the work they want to do with Archewell,” a source told People last month. “They are applying all their learnings to the future of the organization.”

In February, royal reporter Omid Scobie wrote that Meghan and Harry would choose a new name for their charity that did not feature the word “Royal.”

“While the Duke and Duchess are focused on plans to establish a new non-profit organization, given the specific UK government rules surrounding use of the word ‘Royal,’ it has been therefore agreed that their non-profit organization, when it is announced this Spring, will not be named ‘Sussex Royal Foundation,’ Scobie tweeted in a statement. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘SussexRoyal’ in any territory post Spring 2020.Therefore the trademark applications that were filed as protective measures, acting on advice from and following the same model for The Royal Foundation, have been removed.”

The title of Meghan and Harry’s new organization is connected to Archie, their son’s name.

“Before SussexRoyal came the idea of ‘arche’—the Greek word meaning ‘source of action,’ they wrote in a joint statement in April, via Deadline. “We connected to this concept for the charitable organization we hoped to build one day, and it became the inspiration for our son’s name. To do something of meaning, to do something that matters. Archewell is a name that combines an ancient word for strength and action, and another that evokes the deep resources we each must draw upon. We look forward to launching Archewell when the time is right.”

Try These Neck and Back Stretches After Sleeping on the Wrong Side of the Bed

Photo taken in Bangkok, Thailand

I swear that my subconscious thinks I’m a professional acrobat. My morning neck and back pain are proof of my many nights spent kicking, turning, and tossing to the point that all blankets and pillows flee the scene.

You don’t have to be a sleeping gymnast, like me, to know the pain of waking up on the wrong side of the bed, though. That’s because no specific sleeping positions (unless you snooze on a couch, chair, or uncomfortable mattress) cause muscle pain, says Dr. Charla Fischer, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at NYU Langone’s Spine Center.

Since there isn’t one definitive way to get ahead of sleep-induced muscle soreness (we recommend speaking to your doctor for a more personal evaluation), Fischer suggests easing discomfort by stretching for 5-10 minutes a few times a day.

I can attest to this approach, too. My night tumbling hasn’t stopped, but I have felt better since reaching out to Lauren Lyons, an ASTYM-certified physical therapist assistant and certified yoga instructor, for a daily neck and back stretching routine. Here’s hoping it helps you, too.

Neck Pain

Upper-Trapezius Stretch

  • Sit up straight in a chair and tuck your chin to your chest — your ears should align with your shoulders.
  • Lift your right arm up and over your head and place your hand on the left side of your head to gently stretch your head to the right side.
  • Hold for 30 seconds before repeating on the opposite side.
  • Repeat 2-3 times per side.

Levator Scapula Stretch

  • Sit up straight in a chair and grasp the edge of the seat with one hand.
  • Rotate your head to the opposite side of your anchored arm before tucking your chin toward your chest.
  • Grasp the back of your head and gently pull it down until you feel a stretch.
  • Hold for 30 seconds before repeating on your opposite side.
  • Repeat 2-3 times per side.

Back Pain

Lumbar Trunk Rotation

  • Lie on your back with both of your knees bent at 90 degrees, so that your feet are planted on the floor.
  • Slowly rotate your knees to the left as far as you can while keeping your shoulders on the floor.
  • Hold for 30 seconds before repeating on your right side.
  • Repeat 2-3 times per side.

Single Knee to Chest

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
  • Bring one knee to your chest while keeping the other foot flat on the floor and your lower back pressed to the floor.
  • Hold for 30 seconds before repeating on the opposite side.
  • Repeat 2-3 times per side.

Here Are the Funniest Twitter Reactions to Hamilton on Disney+

lin manuel miranda's final performance in "hamilton" on broadway

Walter McBrideGetty Images

Remember Broadway? Remember going to see plays and sitting among other theater-loving people? Broadway is closed until at least January 2021, so it’s going to be a while before we can all experience a live show again. On Friday at midnight PDT/3 a.m. EDT, Disney+ released a June 2016 recording of the Tony Award-winning musical. After years of fans clamoring to find tickets, it’s finally available to the public. The musical came to the streaming platform more than a year before its original October 2021 release date, when it was expected to come to theaters.

This Fourth of July weekend, people all over the U.S. are watching the musical from their homes—where we can all safely social distance from COVID-19. And because the best place for social connection right now is the internet, Hamilton fans are tweeting all their thoughts about the most exciting thing that has happened since March.

“You will just have it. For as many times as you like, right next to A Goofy Movie and Talespin and An Extremely Goofy Movie…,” Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show’s creator, tweeted on June 22.

If, while you are watching this musical unfold, you are coming up with all kinds of nerdy technical questions about the production, Miranda might already have your answers. During a Good Morning America interview, he revealed that the recording in 2016 took place over the course of three days.

“So it was basically a three-day film shoot with the best-rehearsed cast in the history of the movies because we’d all been doing the show for a year at this point,” he said.

And if you are obsessing over Hamilton this weekend, you might want to take the time to support the people who make theater happen but are out of work because of COVID-19.

During The Breakfast Club‘s Angela Yee’s interview this week with musician August Alsina, Alsina shared that he and Jada Pinkett Smith had a relationship. In reference to his 2019 “Nunya” song, which many people think is about Pinkett Smith, Alsina told Yee that he spoke to Pinkett-Smith’s husband of 23 years, Will Smith, about his involvement with Smith’s wife.

“I actually sat down with Will and had a conversation due to the transformation from their marriage to life partnership that they’ve spoken on several times and it not involving romanticism,” he said. He added that Smith gave him his “blessing.” Alsina said he “totally gave [himself] to that relationship for years of my life and I truly and really, really deeply loved and have a ton of love for her.”

Thinking About Playing Tennis Amid COVID-19? Take USTA’s Safety Tips Into Consideration

We know from past experts we’ve interviewed that some evidence suggests that exercise can increase the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), specifically when it’s exercise that is more aerobically intense and in groups. That being said, there are two factors that make workouts safer and reduce the risk of spreading the virus: being outdoors and being physically distanced from other people. That’s why playing tennis seems like the perfect form of physical activity right now if courts are open in your area.

Michael Dowse, the CEO and executive director of the United States Tennis Association, told USA Today, “Our sport is conducive to social distancing. Health and safety is paramount and tennis comes second, but once that first box is checked and it’s deemed safe, it’s the perfect sport for all of us to participate in coming out of this pandemic.” The USTA released tips and recommendations for playing tennis safely based off of guidance from the USTA Medical Advisory Group.

A USTA spokesperson confirmed to POPSUGAR that the guidelines were created for recreational play only as opposed to professional matches. Many international matches, like Wimbledon, are canceled, but the US Open is on track so far to take place this summer.

Highlights From the USTA Safe Tennis Recommendations For COVID-19

The recommendations from the USTA are meant to help keep tennis players safe. Of course, make sure that courts are open near you before you try to play recreationally. Some key recommendations from the list are as follows:

  • Before playing: Try to limit your play time to those you live with or individuals who are low risk. People who feel sick, who have been in recent contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, or who are high risk are cautioned against playing. For the latter, this is especially true if your state is in phase one or phase two of reopening (only in phase three is it considered safe for high-risk people to resume public interactions, according go to federal guidelines).
  • Before playing: Sanitize your hands properly and wipe down your equipment with a disinfectant if you want to be extra cautious. Arrive as close as possible to when you need to be at the court. Bring personal protective equipment to be used appropriately (for example, masks when distancing cannot take place).
  • While playing: Stay at least six feet apart from other players even when playing doubles, and do not make physical contact with them (think shaking hands or giving high fives).
  • While playing: Avoid touching your face after handling equipment like tennis balls and rackets. Also, avoid sharing drinks, food, and towels.
  • While playing: The USTA recommends you pick up balls with your foot and racket, and the spokesperson clarified that you should apply hand sanitizer immediately if you touch someone else’s tennis balls or equipment. The USTA also suggests only handling balls designated for you based on numbers (you can read more about that in the “Use Four Balls or Six Balls” section of the recommendations).
  • After playing: Leave the court as soon as you’re done playing. Refrain from using a locker room to shower or change. Wash your hands thoroughly, or use hand sanitizer after leaving the court.

“The USTA recognizes the evolving and fast-changing nature of this situation and will continue to monitor and assess conditions to make future changes to the guidelines if needed,” the spokesperson said. For the full list of recommendations, go to the USTA website.

A few reminders: the CDC has stated that though viral particles can live on surfaces, transmission through respiratory droplets is the main concern for COVID-19 at this time. As experts have advised, if you’re able to safely distance yourself from others outside, you can opt out of wearing a mask. However, while working out distanced from people around you, if you want to wear a mask and are comfortable doing so, feel free.

POPSUGAR aims to give you the most accurate and up-to-date information about the coronavirus, but details and recommendations about this pandemic may have changed since publication. For the latest information on COVID-19, please check out resources from the WHO, CDC, and local public health departments.

On July 4, 1999, David and Victoria Beckham got married at Luttrellstown Castle on the outskirts of Dublin, Ireland, which sits on a 560-acre estate. Both celebrated their day by sharing photos on Instagram and reminiscing about their special day.

David posted a throwback montage of their time together and of footage of Victoria when she was Posh Spice.

“Well about 23 years ago I was sat in a room with Gary Neville and the spice girls were on the TV and I turned around to him and said ‘ohhhh I like that one in the little black catsuit’ 😄 who would have thought that all these years later we are celebrating 21 years of marriage and have 4 of the most beautiful and perfect kids.. The Crown Season 5: Everything We Know

Warning: Contains minor spoilers for seasons 4 and 5 of The Crown.

Although Royal enthusiasts await season 4 of Netflix’s The Crown, intel on the fifth and final season has begun to emerge. From the Oscar-nominated actresses assuming the roles of Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret to hints at the plot, there’s plenty to anticipate. Below, everything we know about season 5 of The Crown, including how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal exit will impact it.

This content is imported from {embed-name}. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

The fifth season of The Crown will be its last.

Back in November 2016, Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos confirmed that Morgan’s initial pitch for the show outlined six seasons. “The idea is to do this over six decades, in six seasons presumably, and make the whole show over eight to 10 years,” he said, per The Hollywood Reporter.

But just as the Royal family’s recent plans have changed, so too has the series depicting it. Deadline reported in late January that the show’s fifth season would be its last. “At the outset I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons but now that we have begun work on the stories for season 5 it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop,” Morgan said in a statement. “I’m grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision.”

Sophie Mutevelian / Netflix

News of an abbreviated run for The Crown came on the heels of major content opportunities for the show. Earlier that month, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sent ripples throughout the monarchy when they announced they would step down from their senior royal roles. In November, Prince Andrew was forced to walk away from his own royal duties after questions about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein arose.

Imelda Staunton will play Queen Elizabeth II.

A scrapped sixth season means Oscar nominee Imelda Stauntion will have only one installment to make an impact. Rumors of her casting as the Queen initially began in November 2019, shortly after the third season premiered. Deadline confirmed the news in late January.

Gilbert CarrasquilloGetty Images

“I’m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty the The Queen for the fifth and final season, taking The Crown into the 21st century,” creator and showrunner Peter Morgan said in a statement. “Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman.”

Netflix also tweeted a statement from Staunton about her casting: “I have loved watching The Crown from the very start. As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts. I am genuinely honoured to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion.”

This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

Lesley Manville will play Princess Margaret.

Netflix announced in July that Oscar-nominated Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread, Maleficent) will take on the role previously played by Helena Bonham Carter and Vanessa Kirby. “I could not be happier to be playing Princess Margaret,” the actress said in a statement, shared to the show’s official Twitter. “The baton is being passed on from two formidable actresses and I really don’t want to let the side down. Furthermore, to play siblings with my dear friend Imelda Staunton will be nothing short of a complete joy.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry aren’t likely to be covered on The Crown.

In January, The Crown executive producer Suzanne Mackie told the BBC, “To be honest, whatever the life of The Crown is after where we are now, I doubt we’ll ever go as far into the present day. I think we’ll probably…we don’t travel into the present day.”

The Duke And Duchess Of Sussex Visit Johannesburg - Day Two

Chris JacksonGetty Images

Morgan originally held this stance back in 2018. “I feel uncomfortable writing about events within a certain time period,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I think there’s a certain amount of time within which, if you write about it, what you do instantly becomes journalistic. Because it’s too close to the moment.”

He continued, “Let’s wait 20 years and see what there is to say about Meghan Markle. I don’t know what there is to say about Meghan Markle at the moment. I wouldn’t know and I wouldn’t presume. She’ll only become interesting once we’ve had 20 years to digest who she is and what her impact has been. If I were to write about Meghan Markle I would automatically be writing journalistically.”

The season 5 timeline has not been determined.

There isn’t word on what the final season of The Crown will cover. Insiders told Deadline in January that the fourth season will end around 1990, the year Thatcher was “ousted” from her Prime Minister position.

From there, it’s unknown just how modern the monarchy will get. The series could choose to skip ahead to more recent events or follow a ’90s format without depicting, say, the college courtship between Prince William and Kate Middleton, or Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding.

While we’re speculating about what The Crown could cover, keep in mind that many major events occurred within palace walls in the thirty-year timespan between 1990 and 2020. There have been six prime ministers: John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson. Three major divorces rocked the ’90s, including Princess Anne and Mark Phillips’ 1992 split and the 1996 breakups between Prince Charles and Princess Diana and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. A year later, Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris. And in 2002, Queen Elizabeth celebrated her Golden Jubilee after 50 years of ruling. Several of these events were depicted in the 2006 film The Queen, which was written by Morgan.

Cameos from former cast members are not out of the question.

No other cast members have been announced for season 5 of The Crown. Viewers know that the main characters are recast every two seasons for aging purposes. Seasons 3 and 4 saw Olivia Colman (Queen Elizabeth II), Tobias Menzies (Prince Philip), and Helena Bonham Carter (Princess Margaret) lead the royal ensemble, while the first two seasons followed Claire Foy, Matt Smith, and Vanessa Kirby in those roles.

2

Stuart Hendry / Netflix

A season 5 cast will also presumably include Prince Charles, Camilla Parker Bowles, Princess Diana, and potentially Margaret Thatcher (who plays a large role in season 4 and will be played by Gillian Anderson). While the casting confirmations roll in, keep in mind that cameos from former cast members could occur. Foy was spotted filming for a potential flashback for the fourth season in November 2019.

A premiere date has not been set.

No official release date for the final season has been announced. Fans don’t even have a concrete date for the fourth season. However, Entertainment Tonight reported that season 4 finished filming on schedule, mere days into the pandemic. If the next two installments follow the previous release schedule, a fourth season would air in late 2020, following the third season in 2019. The first two seasons aired back to back in 2016 and 2017, with a year in between for the casting switch. Thus, a fifth season could tentatively air as late as 2022.

This post will be updated.

On Thursday, Khloé Kardashian apparently responded to rumors that she is engaged to Tristan Thompson, her daughter’s father. “Wait…what? lol,” she wrote on Twitter. “I just came online and I’m even confused lol,” she said in another tweet. “Basically my daily thoughts about 2020. But for real… wtf lol people just be talking,” she continued. And then in a fourth tweet: “Quarantine has us all going 🤪🤪.”

Kardashian didn’t directly state what she was referring to, but Us Weekly speculates that she was making vague reference to the rumors fans started after spotting a ring on her left hand in her birthday party photos.

A source told Us on Thursday that Kardashian and Thompson “are not engaged.” This is the photo in question:

Family friend Jonathan Cheban wrote the following comment that raised fans’ eyebrows: “Does that [ring] come with [sunglasses]? blinded by the light!”

Although the two might not be planning to get hitched, they are spending time together as co-parents during the global pandemic.

“Khloé doesn’t have bad or negative feelings toward Tristan at this point,” a source told Us March. “Being quarantined has made her have a soft spot for him, and she knows he will always be part of her life in some way because he is True’s dad. Khloé has been open and receptive toward Tristan.”

And, a source told People this week, the two are back together. The source said they are “giving their relationship another try. Tristan is working hard to prove himself and has been a great dad to True.”

On Kardashian’s birthday last week, Thompson posted a photo of Kardashian cuddling with their daughter, True.

“I’m wise enough now to know, you came into my life to show me just what it means to be an incredible person,” he wrote. “I appreciate how I am able to learn from and grow because of you. I thank God for the beautiful and loving woman you are to everyone, especially our daughter True. You deserve the world Koko! True and I love you mama. Happy Birthday @khloekardashian ❤️🥳.”

A Vancouver-based Street Style Photographer is Selling Prints to Benefit The Loveland Foundation

100% of the proceeds from Canadian street style photographer Sabrina Fenster’s photos will be given to the organization founded by activist Rachel Cargle.

There are many different ways to support the Black Lives Matter movement through advocacy and financial investment. And this week, Canadian street style photographer Sabrina Fenster, who works under the moniker StreetScout, launched the sale of a series of prints (some with handwritten notes from the images’ subjects), with 100% of the proceeds from the images going to The Loveland Foundation. Founded in 2018 by writer and lecturer Rachel Cargle, Loveland provides a therapy fund for Black women and girls across America, as well as opportunities for advancement through fellowships, residency programs and listening tours.

“I am using my street style photography as a platform to give to a charitable foundation and create ongoing and tangible social impact,” says Fenster about her mission with the series. “My goal is to create and share prints that are driven by purpose, and also give you, the buyer, the opportunity to contribute to meaningful change while hanging something beautiful in your home. Not only are you supporting the cause, you are getting a token from the cause. Each print serves as a reminder of your ongoing commitment to create positive change toward racial equality.”

We caught up with Fenster, who has also been documenting BLM protests, to find out more about why she’s selling her photos, and what she’s learned by following the momentum of Black Lives Matter.

What inspired you to sell these portraits and donate the proceeds to the Loveland Foundation?

I wanted to find a way to support the Black Lives Matter movement in a way that moved past the “black square” phenomenon that took over the social media world a month ago. I thought it would be powerful if I could find a way to use my street style photography as a platform to give to a charitable foundation that I believe in, and create ongoing social impact through sales of prints. With that in mind, I revisited and compiled the street style photographs I’ve taken of diverse people from my travels to New York and London over the years, and started repurposing them into prints. I stretched the idea further by asking subjects from my photographs to submit handwritten declarations that resonate with them through the BLM movement, give a platform for their self expression, and allow the viewer to connect to the subject’s humanity and what they are standing for in this moment. By using my street style photos for good, I feel I can continue to support the movement in a way that resonates with me.

The Loveland Foundation was the perfect tie-in to this initiative because I wanted to give a platform for people’s self expression and that is exactly what this foundation stands for. They provide a safe place for Black women and girls to receive support of their mental health through therapy sessions.

As a street style photographer, what role do you think you play in the fashion world in terms of fostering inclusion?

The role I think I play in the fashion world in terms of fostering inclusion is ensuring I am diverse in my photo taking, as well as the sharing of that content, and giving voice to those people, too, where I can. As a street photographer, I have a say in what gets visually shared, and I need to make it my business to be inclusive of all colours, shapes, and sizes. This might mean getting more diverse in where I take my photos, too. I hope to attend more protests and other philanthropic events where people are in the midst of making a difference. This documentation of people is truly inspiring and powerful, and I’d like to use my platform to amplify messages of support for the BLM movement and for equitable visual media.

Through the Black Lives Matter Street Style Portrait Series, I also plan to add more photographs to the series, both old and new. I am fostering relationships with Black women and men that I admire to further include in this very powerful collection and have them submit handwritten declarations so that I can continue to take a stand for their self-expression.

What are some of the things you’ve learned since the Black Lives Matter movement gained so much momentum last month that have resonated with you, or have caused you to think differently about how you navigate through life?

I’ve learned that perfection is not a prerequisite for participation and staying silent is a part of the problem. While I’ve thought something along the lines of, “Who am I to take a stand for this? My voice is not important here”, which, perhaps many of us white people think, it resonated deeply with me that my silence would be heard, and this caused me to think differently about how I navigate through life and in conversations. I’ve learned that speaking up and taking a stand, even if it’s uncomfortable or awkward, is crucial. And I’d rather fumble through it than stay censored. This means acknowledging my own white privilege and implicit bias out loud and doing the work to understand it. And it also means taking the lead on difficult conversations at work or with friends and family.

What resonates the most for me is that I not only want to take a stand for my own self-expression in the world, but for others as well, especially Black people. That is the intention of this street style portrait series–to give voice, character, humanity, and self-expression to those who have lost it through centuries of oppression.

Are there any readings, podcasts or social accounts you can recommend to those who want to better understand the BLM movement and how they can contribute to it?

Following Rachel Cargle is a really great place to start. She dives into open and honest discourse around racism and encourages critical analysis of her community. I encourage everyone to check out her platform called The Great Unlearn, which is a monthly self-paced syllabi that has lots of great resources to aid in the unlearning of racial disparities.

I also recommend following Atlanta-based artist and activist, Danielle Coke. I really align with who she is as a person, and love that she advocates and educates with equal measures of firmness and kindness. I also just noticed she launched a learning platform called The Neighborhood, which I am excited to check out!

Unsolved Mysteries: The FBI Is Investigating Alonzo Brooks’s Case as a Potential Hate Crime

The FBI and Department of Justice have reopened the case of Alonzo Brooks, who attended a party in La Cygne, Kansas, in East Central Kansas, on an April night in 2004 and never returned. His body was found in a creek a month later. He was 23 years old. His story is also featured on the reboot of the Netflix series Unsolved Mysteries.

On June 11, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister and FBI Special Agent in Charge Timothy Langan announced that the FBI is reopening the investigation. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $100,000 to anyone who knows anything about Brooks’s disappearance. The decision to reopen Alonzo’s case is potentially motivated by the case being featured on Unsolved Mysteries.

“We are investigating whether Alonzo was murdered,” McAllister told KSNT. “His death certainly was suspicious, and someone, likely multiple people, know(s) what happened that night in April 2004. It is past time for the truth to come out. The code of silence must be broken. Alonzo’s family deserves to know the truth, and it is time for justice to be served.”

Alonzo’s death is being investigated as a potential hate crime

Per KSNT, the FBI is looking into the murder as a racially motivated crime.

I’m Mexican and his father is Black,” his mother, Maria Ramirez, told NBC’s Dateline. “So he’s mixed. They didn’t just target one race. Or kill one race. They killed two. He was targeted because of the color of his skin.”

There was conflict at the party where Alonzo was last seen

Per Dateline and according to an investigation by the FBI, there were approximately 100 people at the event between the ages of 16 to 25, and Alonzo was only one of three Black people at the party.

McAllister said there were reports of multiple fights breaking out and people making racist comments. Alonzo’s ride left the gathering without him.

“My God, it was awful,” Billy Brooks Sr. told Dateline. “To find my boy like that. Nothing can describe that pain.”

He added however, that when he and the other members of the search party found the body, the overcast skies cleared. “It was like my boy was telling me everything was OK now,” Billy said. “At least we had found him. It wasn’t how we wanted to find him, but at least we did.”

Officials have never been able to make conclusions about the death

By the time Alonzo’s body was discovered, it was too late for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. From the beginning, McAllister said, there were reports of foul play in the man’s death.

Fenty Skin Is On Its Way — Here’s Everything We Know So Far

The rumors are true. Fenty Skin is coming for your beauty cabinet! After dabbling into skincare with lip balm, lip scrub, and blotting paper, Rihanna announced in the latest issue of British Vogue that she is diving into the skincare game with Fenty Skin―with a launch sooner than you think.

“Skincare, it’s the truth. It either works or it doesn’t. There’s nowhere to hide,” RiRi told the outlet.

Rihanna’s announcement confirms the speculation that the sister brand was in the works after a trademark with the name was filed in March 2019 with the United States Trademark and Patent Office as reported by Page Six.

According to the trademark, Fenty Skin will cover, “medicated and non-medicated skin care preparations and soaps, body care kits comprising non-medicated body care preparations, and skincare product accessories.” It will not include “color cosmetics, perfume, and other fragrance-only products.”

Although there is not an official launch date for Fenty Skin, we do have an idea of the first products that will drop. The brand trademarked names for five non-medicated skin preparations in September 2019 and earlier this month. All with the signature clever Fenty Beauty product names.

  • Instant Reset

When Fenty Beauty launched back in 2017, it changed the game with 40 foundation shades soon becoming the industry gold standard. Rihanna’s beauty line has always championed inclusivity and diversity, so we can only expect the skincare launch to do the same. The only question remains is: What product will you cop first?

Dolce & Gabbana Unveils a Virtual Alta Moda Spectacular

For Alta Moda, Dolce & Gabbana’s answer to couture, the destinations: TKTKT: are almost as glamorous as the clothes on display. This time around, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are marking summer, the return of la dolce vita, and their latest Alta Moda, Alta Sartoria, and Alta Gioielleria collections in a big way (albeit virtually). Via a site that went live today, the Italian house is showcasing all three collections. The site includes a video with an old-school slide show featuring snapshots of the Duomo in Milan and gondolas in Venice.

“Florence was the cradle of the Renaissance, of Italianness, of an ancient wisdom that has been handed down and continues to transfer its influence on contemporary culture and aesthetics,’ said the designers in a press release. “Bringing our work to the most iconic places of the city is a dream come true. Even more because we have been able to work closely with the artisans of the city, who preserve in their workshops an invaluable and timeless know-how.”

Though there was no celeb-filled front row (customers tuned in virtually via a private website created for the occasion), the duo still brought the glamour with a collection inspired by Italian razzle-dazzle and travel. Looking to everything from vintage postcards to inspire silk prints and trimming dramatic caftans and kimonos with no shortage of fur and feathers, it was a collection worthy of a Slim Aarons muse. “The event represents a strongly optimistic message from the fashion industry,” said Pitti Immagine CEO Rafaello Napoleone in a statement. “It is a signal that we are back up and running and ready to restart.”

How Natasha Roberts Builds Community Through Her Toronto Vintage Store

    Photograph courtesy of Instagram/@spacevintagexo.

“It’s about growing with people, and living life with them.”

It’s very satisfying to see something come full circle. And no one knows that better than Natasha Roberts, owner of the charming Toronto boutique, Space Vintage. Roberts comes by her retail prowess thanks to a strong example set by her mother, Ashlene; at a young age, Roberts understood the power of wellness and community through spending time at her mom’s spa, located in Toronto’s Mirvish Village neighbourhood.

An underground haven complete with a water feature, the spa was like an oasis in Toronto’s bustling Annex area. A small rack of clothing was set up in the soothing spot–“Fashion was always a part of my mom’s life,” Roberts says–and through word-of-mouth, interest in the finery being sold was swiftly generated. “Demand started to grow,” she recalls. “And we changed the spa into Space Vintage.” It became so popular, the likes of Nelly Furtado and Rachel McAdams were counted as fans of the store when it came to finding pieces for event dressing,

After nearly two fruitful decades in the same location, the demolition of Toronto’s famed Honest Ed’s building and the rest of the surrounding block of businesses meant Space was in need of, well, a new one. “We were displaced, and it was kind of miraculous to find somewhere in Kensington,” Roberts says, noting that her mother shopped in the iconic neighbourhood and dreamed of having a store there. “There was just something about it that was full circle.”

The cozy spot was updated with gold-tone walls and décor and quickly became a must-visit for vintage lovers and those curious about shopping second-hand. But recently, Roberts has faced the same challenges as other retailers in terms of staying engaged with customers through the COVID-19 crisis. She highlights that given the close nature of her relationship with shoppers, much thought has gone into interactions that exist in a digital space. “Everything we do is about connection. You can cry in our store, you can laugh, you can dance, you can strut, you can tell me your life story.”

To fill the void of these intimate IRL moments in the shop, Roberts has been doing virtual personal shopping appointments, and will continue to use Instagram as a shopping platform while an e-commerce site for the store is built (it’s expected to launch this fall). While she’s excited about the prospect of having shoppers across Canada more readily access her curated offerings, Roberts is also well aware of the need to recreate the special atmosphere she’s worked so hard to cultivate with Space Vintage. “[I’m] working to create something nostalgic and familiar when it comes to being online,” says Roberts. “It’s not just selling clothing. For me, that’s very lonely – I call it lonely money. What I do, it’s people over profit. It’s about people’s lives.”

Her customers–or “stars”, as Roberts calls them–have grown accustomed to not only having a sanctuary in Space’s physical location, but also to feeling its owner’s passion for vintage clothing. “I think with vintage, every [piece] has a soul,” says Roberts, adding that some of the retro items that give her a sense of command are dresses from the 1970s. “They could have a bold print, maybe be cinched at the waist. They make me feel so powerful, and the most like me.”

Roberts notes that she feels there’s a “kind of prophetic element to wearing vintage clothing,” and says that “If you feel connected to a piece, buy it. There might be a special day when you can wear it.” She recalls a Christian Dior jacket that hung in her closet for months before she wore it. “I’ve had powerful experiences in that jacket,” she says.

The kind of hopefulness Roberts sees in every piece of vintage she releases to her customers is also imbued in her philosophy when it comes to thriving during quarantine and beyond, particularly because her store has seen its share of hardship after being ousted from its original location.

“I’m encouraged and optimistic because overcoming something and coming out victorious is so motivating,” she says. “I want to give other people that bright light. I want to be there for people just by being successful. [And] being a Black-owned business, I see it as a responsibility to be successful and to never give up, because I want other people to have opportunities.”
